Doug and Andy's schedules did not align for them to record this week, so we're using the audio from a brief portion of a webinar that Andy was a presenter on a few weeks ago. His part centered around the concept of Owner's Metrics vs. Manager's Metrics. We hope you enjoy this special edition of the podcast, and we'll be back next week with Andy and Doug.

The owners metric is the value of your company and that's where savvy entrepreneurs obsess. Your friends from school, your peers, even your family probably want you to grow your revenue at all costs, right? Because that's the way we judge companies, right? Bigger companies are more important. How many employees do you have? How much revenue do you have? That's the way we judge each other as entrepreneurs and it's misguided. People that focus on value know they're going to get a whole lot more value by putting their head down and focusing on doing one thing for 25 years better than anybody else.

On today's episode of the Apex Business Advisors podcast, Andy and Doug discuss the benefits of having a Broker's Opinion of Value performed in the 4th quarter.

For a business to sell successfully, both the owner and the business must be ready. Unfortunately, this year, we have had to turn down several listings where only the seller was prepared. They sought to retire and sell, only to realize that their business's value and appeal weren't attractive to the market. Lack of proper planning had left their business unready. Entrepreneurs often pride themselves on aspects crucial for business growth, but these might not align with what potential buyers value. Buyers look for established processes, reliable personnel, and technology in place.

The benefits of a 4th quarter valuation that Andy and Doug discuss are informed decision making, negotiation power, timeline control, and tax & financial planning.

A common theme we see with many sellers is the owner doesn't properly plan their exit. They come to Apex when they (the owner) are ready to sell because of burnout, retirement, health issues, etc. Unfortunately, they have not taken the necessary steps to make the business ready to sell. Both have to be ready to sell. Getting the business ready to sell takes much longer than getting the owner ready. Andy and Doug discuss when to start the conversation to ensure you don't fall into this category when you're ready to sell.

We all remember the old Army promotional campaign – "Be all you can be." Pictures of young soldiers, accompanied by a snappy song in the background, with the words of the campaign sung with great joy. It was a tremendous success in its day! Interestingly, the Army leadership has recently decided to use the same slogan and approach with its new enlistment campaign. Today's younger generations need meaning and significance in this life, and this campaign seems to reach them where they are. They want a meaningful life and to know that they can develop their abilities and live a life that is good, full, and even 'abundant.'

Interestingly, that is precisely what Jesus offered his followers in one of his messages – an abundant life! This is how Jesus said it: "The thief comes only to steal, and kill, and destroy; I came that they might have life, and might have it abundantly." (John 10:10) Jesus was contrasting what he, the true Son of God, offered to people, and what The Evil One, through those that were leaders of earthly and corrupt faiths, offered. Jesus asserted that He could lead his followers to a life worth living; A life that God blessed; and a life that would last forever into eternity, in the presence of the One True God.

The Life that Jesus offered – an "Abundant Life"- can be experienced by all who decide to follow Jesus as Savior. It is a very personal decision between God and every individual, and one that is literally life-changing.

Let me encourage you to consider your decision to follow Jesus as Savior. Jesus is the crucified and resurrected Son of God and the only one that can give you life and life eternal! Confess your sins to Him, ask Him into your heart, and begin living the abundant life only available through him.
