Ian’s guests are people who have also stood out for some reason in their lives, people who have overcome challenges, represented a minority group, broken down barriers for others, excelled in some area of their lives or been an inspiration to others.
Some will be well known and others not as much but all will have a positive story to tell.
This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell James Cawley. James is a Disability activist from Co Longford. He is the Business Development Manager at the Irish Centre for Diversity. He provides guidance and support for organisations across multiple sectors in Ireland that are looking to move the needle on their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion journey.
This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Jack Kennedy. Jack who is from Dingle in county Kerry is an Irish National Hunt jockey. He rode 123 winners in Ireland to be crowned champion jockey for the first time at the end of the 2023/2024 season. He became the youngest jockey in modern times at 21 years of age to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2021 renewal on the Henry de Bromhead-trained Minella Indo. He was only 17 when he rode his first winner at the Festival. He burst onto the scene in the summer of 2015 and was undoubtedly the find of the year.
This week’s guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Laura Farrington. After the passing of her father Laura left her corporate job and travelled to India where she found her passion In yoga and meditation which changed the course of her life bringing her to where she is today. Laura set up Umbrella Wellness in 2017 with the aim to help people with their mental and physical health in order to have a greater work life balance.
This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Aoife Raferty. Aoife is an Irish female rally driver. She started competitive rallying in 2021 in the British Junior Rally Championship due to Covid-19 putting a stop to races in Ireland. She was one of 15 females selected to participate in the WRC’s first ever women’s development program. She is the only Irish driver to make the final assessment. Aoife believes the sport is growing and is hoping to inspire a generation of females to get involved in rallying industry.
This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Keith Walsh is an Irish radio presenter. Keith shares his journey with ADHD and Autism. Keith decided to start therapy which helped him to understand his diagnosis and he openly shares his story to raise awareness on ADHD & Autism and to normalise and get rid of the stigma around going to therapy.
This week’s guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Erin King. Erin is an Olympian and an Irish Rugby player who plays for the Ireland women’s national rugby team and the Irish rugby 7’s team. Erin was born in Australia. She lived with her family in Dubai and Doha. The family moved back to Ireland for Erin’s teenage years. Earlier this year she was named World Rugby Women’s Breakthrough layer of the Year at the World Rugby Awards in Monaco.
This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Darren Kiely. Darren is from Co. Cork. He’s music originates from his inherited love of traditional Irish music, intertwined with modern influences such as Noah Kahan. At 5 years old, Darren learned the tin whistle, and at 8 years old he picked up the fiddle, eventually teaching himself to play guitar. He began singing in 2019. Darren found his way to New York in 2022 to continue developing his own music. His new track debuted in the Top 40 on the Irish Singles Chart and also landed him in the Top 5 on the Irish Home Grown chart with over 6.5 million total global streams under his belt.
This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Jamie Finn is an Irish pro footballer who plays for Birmingham City and the ROI women’s national team. She previously represented Shelbourne in her native Dublin. In 2016 Finn spent a short time in college soccer with Florida Gulf Coast Eagles. Vera Pauw called up Finn for the first time for the Euro 2022 qualifier against Greece on 12 Nov 2019. On the 22nd Feb 2024, Finn tore her ACL and is currently working hard on her rehabilitation and is determined to return to the football pitch as quickly and as strong as ever!
This week’s guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Max Hart. Max is from Baltinglass in County Wicklow and is a professional racing driver and finalist of Motorsport Ireland/Sport Ireland Young Driver of The Year. Max grew up surrounded by motorsports in his family. Max’s job has brought him all over the world and has been to and raced as close as England and as far as Asia. Max being nominated for Young Driver of the Year, opened doors for him on and off the track and his time in single seaters took him from Formula Vee all the way to Asia to compete with Formula 4 and test a Formula 3 car. Max is now competing in Touring cars which is a motorsport road racing competition with heavily modified road-going cars. It is popular worldwide and has huge viewings.

We chat about the industry, stigma and misconception of being a Dj, nightlife, social media, and lots more.
This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Ashling Thompson is an Irish sportswoman. She plays camogie with her local club, Milford, and with the Cork county team. Ashling has endured a lot of trauma in her life as well as a car accident in 2009 caused severe muscle damage to her neck and back and led to a period of mental illness. Ashling has 3 club all Ireland medals as well as 5 county All Ireland medals and 3 all star awards so far.
This week’s guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Steve O’Mahony. Steve is a dj and music fanatic and DJ. Steve has also worked in Radio Kerry before. He is a proud father to his daughter Alexis. Alexis was born with Pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency, a rare and serious condition that affects her metabolism, and this has meant the past few years have been challenging for Alexis and her parents
This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is former Clare dule football and hurler and All-Ireland winner Podge Collins. Podge made his Banner debut in 2012 and won an All-Ireland medal in 2013 while also winning his first All-Star and named the Sunday Game Player of the Year. That was the start of a decorated career in both football and hurling in the Clare jersey.
This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Edel Lawlor. Edel is the founder and Director of Expressive play, a child and adolescent therapy centre. Edel has over 20 years experience working in a variety of therapeutic support roles with both children and adults. Edel has an a MA in Psychotherapy and Play Therapy and has also trained in Sandplay Therapy, Art Therapy, Puppetry and Social Care.
This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Ciaran Prior. Ciaran is a native of Lanesboro in Co Longford and is a former CSI Crime scene investigator. Ciaran has worked on some of Ireland’s most shocking murders. On October 6th, 2022, Ciaran Prior left a career as a Crime Scene Investigator with An Garda Siochana, having spent 23 years working in the Roscommon Garda Division. His first book, ‘Traces of Truth-A CSI Investigates Life and Death’ offers a glimpse behind the scenes into the fascinating world of crime scene investigation.

While Kayleigh is best known for impersonating other people, The lip-sync artist is has been on an interesting journey from primary school teacher to full-time content creator. Kayleigh has come a long way since she blew up online during the pandemic, having amassed over 295k followers on Instagram and 156k on TikTok – where she’s gained over 3.7million likes. It’s amazing how big and powerful social media is today in 2024.
This week’s guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is John Fogarty. John studied in Maynooth college and he is a journalist and Gaelic Games correspondent with the Irish Examiner since 2010 before previously working for the Irish Mail on Sunday. John’s has recently opened up and gave a raw and honest article about his daughter Grace who was diagnosed with autism. Grace had reached most of her milestones before her twin brother Ollie but she didn’t socialise with other toddlers and her speech was non-existent. A hearing test just before her second birthday in 2020 didn’t show up any issues. The following year, we applied for an Assessment of Need and in September 2021 secured a cancellation appointment with a preliminary assessment team. 3 years on from her preliminary assessment that found Grace required the aforementioned interventions, she has received none of them from the CDNT except for the assessment which diagnosed her autism, something we also had to fight for, so she could access a preschool suitable to her needs.Grace is pre-verbal. Her language is one of limited words, which cover an array of meanings, and gestures. When asked, she can repeat what is said to her and she sings parts of her favourite songs, but several of her words are used out of context.
This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Richie Hogan. Richie is a former Kilkenny hurler with 11 Leinster titles, 4 All Stars and 7 All-Ireland medals to his name. First linked up with the Kilkenny minor team and the under-21 side. He joined the senior panel during the 2007 championship starting a very decorated and successful career.
This week’s guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Harry McNulty. Harry is an Irish 7’s player who currently plays for the LA Giltinis of Major League Rugby. He has an impressive resume in rugby union, playing for Rockwell college and winning the Munster senior cup, Munster Academy, UCD and his latest stint in the USA with the LA Giltinis, who won the US MLR. Harry has a passion for photography where he has some fantastic pictures taken from all around the world. Some taken in cities, and some taken of lions and other wildlife in while out on a safari. He says the best camera you can have is the one that is with you at the time.
This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Marissa Reidy. Marissa is a Kerry women who always wanted to be a journalist. Melissa helps Recovery Haven with their PR and Marketing. She was a news reporter for 17 years with the Kerryman newspaper until 2016. Marissa is the author of ‘Seamus Sherlock – The Fight of My Life’, a book which chronicles the 350-day ordeal endured by Seamus Sherlock when threatened with eviction from his West Limerick farm in 2012.
This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Dan Quirke. Dan is the father of Dillon Quirke. Dillon was on the path following his father’s footsteps. Dan played football and hurling at juvenile and underage levels with Clonoulty–Rossmore. He won a total of six divisional minor and under-21 titles between 1982 and 1988 as well as an All-Ireland Colleges BHC title with Cashel CBS in 1982. Dan made a number of appearances with the Tipperary senior football team between 1991 and 1993.Dan’s son Dillon sadly lost his life on the 5th of August 2022. Dillon suddenly collapsed while playing the sport that he adored playing hurling for Clonoulty Rossmore in the Tipperary senior hurling championship in Semple Stadium due to Sudden Adult Death Syndrome. His father Dan and the Quirke family set up the Dillon Quirke Foundation with the aim of screening as many children as possible for heart defects. The charity organised a senior hurling challenge game at Semple Stadium between Tipperary and Limerick to raise money and Awareness for the organisation. Dan Quirke said that the charity has managed to raise over €1 M in just 13 months.
This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Eoin Sheehan. Eoin is a 27 year old TV chef, nutritionist & food entrepreneur from Limerick. The resident chef on Virgin media’s “Six o clock show” also owns a meal-prep and sports catering business ‘Country Munch’ which supply thousands of fresh healthy dinners to senior GAA squads around Munster, Munster Rugby and other teams all over Ireland throughout the year. Eoin’s ethos is that he will either feed you or teach you to feed yourself. He aims to educate everyone on the simplicity of good food made from the comfort of your own kitchens. Being a competitive athlete allows Eoin to practice what he preaches & lead by example. Whether its the basics of cooking a meal from home or performance nutrition, there’ll be something for everyone.
This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is former Galway hurler Joe Canning. Joe is one of the greatest of his generation. He has 6 siblings. All but one of those would go on to win an All-Ireland medal at either club or inter-county level in either hurling or camogie. Joe won an All-Ireland in 2017 and has 4 All Stars to his name. He scored one of the classiest goals ever seen in Croke Park on the 33rd min in the 2014 Leinster final against Kilkenny.
This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Michael Conlan. Michael is an Irish professional boxer from Belfast. He challenged for the IBF featherweight title in 2023 and the featherweight title in 2022. A world, European and Commonwealth champion and Olympic bronze medallist. Conlon is one of Ireland's most successful amateur fighters. He turned professional in 2016 after the 2016 Olympic Games when he was the victim of a very controversial decision in which Russia’s Vladimir Nikitin was awarded the victory. That decision was one of a number that had fellow international boxers and commentators questioning the integrity of Olympic boxing and the scoring system used. He was RTÉ Sports Person of the Year in 2015.
This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Alex Alex Dunne. Alex is an Irish racing driver who competes in the 2024 FIA Formula 3 Championship with MP Motorsport. Dunne began karting at the age of eight, taking a number of victories in local competitions. He would achieve his first ever win in car racing at the Dubai Autodrome. Ahead of the 2024 Imola Formula 3 round in May, Dunne was announced to be joining the McLaren Driver Development Programme
This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Tess Arbez. Tess is a talented 24-year-old French-Irish skier and was only 20 when she made her Olympic debut in Pyeong Chang in 2018. Her maternal grandfather was born in Carlow and lived in Blackrock in Dublin and her mother Marguerite lived in England before her parents moved to France. Marguerite is a genetic scientist at the same university where Tess studied in.
This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Hannah Mcloughlin. Only 18 when she made her Irish senior debut, Hannah is a Senior International Irish hockey player. Hannah made it to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with the Irish team. Hannah graduated Economics and Finance from UCD with a first class honours under the Ad Astra Elite Sports Scholarship Programme.

I’m delighted to say that my guest this week on Stand Out with me Ian O’Connell is Castleisland native Pat Murphy. Pat is a race walker with over 47 years I have competed in over 100 countries. Pat was a self employed plumber with 48 years. All that came to an end the Monday of the May Bank Holiday 2023 when out of the blue he got a bad stroke. We talk about race walking, the stroke he suffered and much more.

They are involved in Kerry Social Farming which is operating social farms since 2014, Kerry Social Farming was founded on principles of equality, social inclusion, voluntary community development and collaboration. It is currently one of two projects operating the voluntary model of social farming in Ireland, in that farmers are not paid for their time with participants. Stevo is a Galway comedian who’s numbers have reached millions online and has sold out shows in Vicar Street the mecca of comedy in Ireland. In 2005 Stevo was in an accident where he crashed his motorcycle sadly passing away and leaving Stevo in a wheelchair. Stevo speaks openly about the incident and urges road users the importance of safety on our roads. We will be talking about growing up in Galway, comedy, anxiety and mental health, his struggles with alcohol, the crash that changed the course of his life forever, drink driving and much more.

Paddy is from Dublin and is a disabled rights campaigner and TV personality, won Channel 4 social media-themed reality show The Circle in 2019. Paddy has also appeared as a contestant on First Dates Ireland and on Celebrity Pulling With my Parents. Paddy shared his struggles with cerebral palsy on The Circle and raised awareness. We will be talking about Paddy’s life growing up with cerebral palsy, the daily challenges that he faces, the good and bad of reality television, being an accidental disability activist and more.
This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Imogen Cotter. Imogen is an Irish professional racing cyclist. In January 2022 she was injured in Spain while training. She suffered a ruptured quadriceps tendon, a broken patella, radius and ulna after being hit by a car driving on the wrong side of the road and she is here tonight to tell her story. We will be talking about Imogen’s personal life, Imogen’s life changing accident and the injuries that she sustained, her collaboration with the Road Society Authority (RSA) cycling and more.

This week's guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is David Holmes. David was a stunt double for Daniel Ratcliffe (Harry Potter). In January 2009 Holmes was seriously injured and left partially paralyzed after an accident during the filming of a stunt test for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. In 2020 launched a podcast with Daniel Radcliffe, called Cunning Stunts, interviewing other stunt actors to raise awareness about the risks they face.We will be talking about Hollywood and the movie industry, life as a stunt double, his accident, he’s now friendship with Daniel Radcliffe, life now and much more.
This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Derval O’Rourke. Derval is an Irish former sprint hurdles athlete. She competed internationally in the 60 and 100 M hurdles, and is the Irish national record holder in both events. She participated in two Indoor World Championships, five Outdoor World Championships and 3 Summer Olympics.

Dean plays wheelchair basketball with Limerick Celtics and he represented Ireland at both u19 and u23 levels. Dean recently took up playing para badminton, with the Tralee and Listowel clubs. It is Deans aim to represent Ireland in the Paralympics at some stage. Sit back and enjoy the show. This weeks guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Irish singer Tommy Fleming. Tommy rose to fame in the early 1990s after he was asked to tour the US with Phil Coulter. He soon established himself as a solo artist and found his greatest success singing traditional Irish music, both old and contemporary. Fleming has toured extensively throughout Ireland, UK, United States and Australia just to name a few. Tommy Fleming is currently living in Mayo with his wife, Tina. He met her at a funeral two days after a tour in the late 1990s. Tommy was involved in where he crashed his car and broke his neck. We will be talking about the Irish country music industry, growing up around music, his family, the car crash that he was involved in and much more.

This week’s guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Sarah de Lagarde. From London, Sarah’s life took a tragic turn when she slipped onto Tube tracks in wet weather. She lost her right arm and leg when she was run over by two London Undergound trains. The horror accident happened as Sarah de Lagarde was travelling home from work on a rainy night, on Sep 30 last year. Sarah recalls lying on the tracks calling for help for 15 mins before anyone heard her. Emergency services were called & was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital. We will be talking about Sarah’s remarkable attitude to over her tragedy, her accident, being 20% robotic and 80% human, her everyday challenges, family life and much more.
This week's guest on Stand Out with Ian O’Connell is Deacon Thady O'Connor. Thady is a Deacon in the Kerry diocese. Thady has a serious story which saw him end up on life-support in ICU after contracting Covid-19. He is currently writing a book on his experience of having severe Covid-19. A very interesting and real life story!
