Welcome back to WWOS! A podcast about helping women in STEM grow into the best version of themselves. This episode is especially important for women in our field because we're usually underrepresented in STEM industries. We talk about how to find a mentor that is mutually beneficial for both parties. A mentor will help you avoid any obvious mistakes, push you into uncomfortable situations, and can provide opportunities for you in the future.
Today we touch on;
How to identify potential mentors
How to reach out to potential mentors
How to provide value first to your mentor
Your mentor can be a friend, a collegue, a VP, a mom, or anyone you want it to be! Both the mentor and mentee should be better off in this relationship. It's just tough finding that perfect fit - and that's what we're trying to help with!
If you have a mentor and want to share your story with us, please reach out to our email wisewomenoncesaidpodcast@gmail.com to potentially be featured on the show! As always, a rating and review will help spread our message. Thanks for listening!

Brooke and I have received lots of feedback that building confidence (in a male-dominated industry) is one of the biggest challenges for women in STEM. For that reason, we are making a whole series on Building Confidence in the workplace!
There's so much to touch on because true confidence doesn't come from faking it - it comes from practice, preparation, and understanding the why's of what you're doing. In this episode specifically, we talk about;
How to prepare for a big test/interview/presentation
How to write (or rewrite) your own story
How to improve your body language to feel more comfortable and confident
We are very passionate about sharing actionable tips that we've used in our careers. We hope you gained a lot of value from this episode. There's plenty more confidecne tips coming as well!
We're back with another episode discussing one of the most important things when starting your career. We all want more of it, but how can we build genuine confidence? We're kicking down the cliches and giving you real, actionable tips to build your self confidence.
"Fake it till you make it" Ehhh not quite
"Just be confident" - okay but.. how??
"Don't worry what others think" - easier said than done.
Here's what we dive into!
Using your inner voice to spark confidence
Being curious and learning new things
And how to avoid "fear of failure"
Building confidence will take time, but through practice and patience, confidence will shine through! We hope you take away something positive from today's episode. This is, without a doubt, one of our favorite guests we've had on the show! Carol Latham's story is incredibly inspirational to all. She was a chemistry major and began her career in corporate America. After a few short years, she had kids and became a full-time mom.
After 18 years out of work, Carol came back to Corporate America with more motivation than before. However, she quickly realized a glass ceiling above her. Her company would not take her seriously and discourage her from new ideas and projects. (Something we still see to this day)
Carol decided to take her new ideas and projects into her own hands. Eventually starting a company called Thermagon Inc which made high-thermal conductivity materials, used to cool chips in computers and other electronic systems.
The road was long and full of obstacles, but Carol pushed passed every barrier in her way. We have a part 2 coming next week to hear how Carol turned her small startup, into a multi-million dollar business.
Thanks for listening! Check out part 2 of Carol's story right after this!
