We talked about the DNC, especially the lines on foreign policy and the prospect of the first VP debate between Ryan and Boehner, then went over how I know Joe Biden and how he took my advice on Iraq (and the semi-partition that now exists), how I helped with the NASA United Space Launch concept (because I gave my plan to a Goddard scientist who was involved in it and used it) and my attempts to get mortgage forgiveness through the fair housing community and where that has gone so far. In truth, more than one people sees things the way I see them, but we reinforce eachother (because we see them as they are). I then riffed for 15 minutes on how to take caer of Medicare Parts B and D and increase the base benefit in Social Security by shifting to consumption taxes (rather than a payroll tax, which is more regressive than a VAT) and the prospect for personal retirement accounts holding not index funds but insured employer voting stock. Its free for the taking, you just have to listen.

We talked about adult literacy (with pay for being trained), the GOP convention business meeting (and how they dissed Ron Paul when they didn't need to), how I don't trust Romney - even if he would govern from the center after being elected, the difference between libertarian socialism, Stalinist bureaucratic authoritarianism and Fascist racism/corporatism and who really fits that bill (to see it in action, watch the convention tonite).

We talked about the NY shooting (and the shooting of bystanders by police), Hurricane Isaac, global warming and Edgar Cayce and the imminent destruction of the South, the prospects for Paul stealing the convention and why the pro-life movement is a GOP sham. (not enough states to ratify the Human Life Amendment, not enough votes to overturn Roe - even after Roberts and Alito - who supported partial birth ban on Commerce Clause grounds (unlike Health Care Reform) and an Act of Congress - which has too many equal protection difficulties in the first trimester to be anything but a ratification of the status quo - thus ending the scam).

Lets consider the question of whether the Romney campaign is deliberately throwing it or badly staffed by loyalists who Romney is loathe to fire the same way Nixon did not immediately clean house in 1972. We talked today about Romney being the new gaffe machine in England and Jerusalem and now heading to Poland to restart the Cold War (going for the three strikes and an out) - what the GOP convention should do (draft Palin) and ending up talking about the Belmont Abbey suit being dismissed and how it shows how badly staffed (and badly intentioned) the religious freedom law suit is because of this (the suit was not ripe and any law student could have told them this - so the intention was obviously to go after Catholic swing voters).

This brings to mind two recent shows - one on gay marriage and one on whether the Tea Party is full of true believers or 5th Columnists out to discredit the movement.
Footage has surfaced with Carl Paladino of New York talking to Hacidic Jews about how he is against gay marriage because it sends the wrong message to youth. This begs the question of what message he wants to send to gay youth. Some possible conservative messages are "you are disordered", "gay sex is disordered - so you might as well sleep around", "kill yourself - there is no hope" "God is uptight - so you better watch out" and "join the priesthood."
Endorsing gay marriage does send different messages, among them "don't have sex unless you are in a loving relationship" and "sexuality is a gift from God", "you are wonderfully made", "you are just like everyone else", "your families have a right to celebrate your love - especially in Church" and "it will get better."

Recently, the DC Mayor's election hinged on attitudes toward school reform in the Nation's Capital. Meanwhile, the documentary "Waiting for Superman" follows families trying to get their kids into private schools. I addressed the topic of school reform, both in DC and elsewhere, in my book, Musings from the Christian Left. We will talk about all of this and take phone calls with your ideas at 646-200-3496. My education reform chapter will show up in a separate blog entry.
The Tea Party is a multi-headed beast, however certain factions, like the Tea Party Express, are made up of the most conservative Republicans - socially, economically and culturally - and they are funded by David Koch through a variety of means. While some factions have no desire to be tagged as organs of the Republican Party, such as the Tea Party Patriots, the TPE desires to control it - either because they think that their ideas will win with voters or because they are trying to discredit the entire movement. The jury is out whether they are true believers or Libertarian Party fifth columnists. I suspect that they may be a little of both and that they have been successful because there is a perceived leadership vacuum in the Republican Party and they had the funding to step in.

Distributists have often argued their case on moral terms grounds alone; they have placed their arguments in the necessary connection between free property and free men; they have argued on agrarian terms, on the natural rhythms of life and social order often disrupted by modern capitalism; they have argued from Catholic teaching and the social encyclicals. But while the moral argument is necessary, it is not sufficient. We must be able to make the case on economic grounds as well. Distributism forms a superior economic theory, one able to give a rational account of actual economic conditions. But it is often the case that Distributists are not able to put the case in purely economic terms.
The theme of this book is simple: Economics, or more properly, political economy, cannot be a proper science unless it is a humane science; to be a humane science it must embody some notion of justice, and particularly of distributive justice. Indeed, as a practical matter, as well as a theoretical one, there can be no balance between supply and demand without distributive justice; the moral question and the economic question are, in reality, one question. Economic equilibrium cannot be divorced from economic equity, and the attempt to do so will lose both equity and equilibrium; the economy will be unable to balance itself, and so will fall either to ruin, or to ruinous government attempts to redress the balance.
The book is written in layman's terms, yet intended to enable the reader to stand his ground in debates with the Austrian, the Keynesian, the Monetarist, the Neoconservative, the Socialist, and all other contenders.
As Labor Day falls upon us, the general election campaign season begins and with it the question of faithful citizenship for Catholic voters and politicians. In the background this year are Denver Archbishop Charles J. Chaput’s reflections to Houston Baptist University on then candidate John F. Kennedy’s address to the Baptist Ministerial Alliance, where Kennedy asserted his independence from Rome in regard to the affairs of state. Archbishop Chaput saw Kennedy’s speech as a beginning of the decoupling by Catholic politicians of their political duties from their political beliefs. In his mind, Catholic politicians who do not adhere to doctrine are “selling out” for political correctness and power – that they are morally cowardly where matters of faith are concerned. Catholic politicians, from Mario Cuomo to Joseph Biden, claim that because not everyone is Catholic, they cannot impose their moral teachings on the body politic.
In my blog posts, I criticized Catholic politicians for a different type of moral cowardice, not because they are selling out their religious beliefs, but because they are hiding behind pluralism rather than explaining to the hierarchy why the Church’s political position on abortion is untenable as a matter of constitutional law and public policy. Indeed, the pluralism argument would fall apart if every citizen were a professed Catholic, while the constitutional and policy arguments would not.
