You’d never go into battle without armor, so why do we get sent into the dumpster fire of medicine without the tools needed to protect ourselves? The current state of medicine can take altruistic, purpose-driven, bright young minds and turn them into frustrated, disillusioned and exhausted shells of their former selves. How do we know? We’ve been there. And we’ve seen it happen to our peers. We are The Whole Physician, 3 Board Certified Emergency Physicians, who think it’s time to change the culture of medicine. We will teach you the ideas and tools we learned from mindset and life coach training that brought joy back into our lives. That fixed relationships. That eased the endless brain chatter. That helped us sleep better at night and made us excited to get out of bed each day. Our mission is you, the doctors who keep showing up despite it all. You are our people. It’s about time someone put you first. Learn more at www.thewholephysician.com.

We discuss the application of these agreements, and how they integrate with our program. Atashi is an incredibly kind, wise, insightful, and brave person--you won't want to miss hearing her story!
In this episode we discuss why it matters to what your brain is paying attention. There are several terms we discuss including:
Reframing and changing perspective is key, but is NOT the same as toxic positivity. It is acknowledging that there is both good and bad in the world, but choosing to focus on the good parts on purpose.
If you're stuck in negativity, we discuss ways to challenge your point of view. Eventually, with enough practice, neuroplasticity allows our default thoughts to be much more positive.

In this episode, Kristin Yates, DO joins us to talk about Inappropriate Things Doctors Brag About (and why we keep doing it).
The reason we do this is likely because of both external and internal pressures, she says. External pressures in that it's what everyone else is doing. And internal pressures in that many of us have replaced our sense of inherent worthiness as a human with having to earn our worthiness through performance.
On the list of misguided badges of honor:
Versus what we SHOULD be proud of:
Doing this is seemingly an act of rebellion in our current medical system. But the more we start doing it, the more inroads we'll make in creating a better place for ourselves and those who follow.

Today the three of us sat down to talk about judgment within medicine. This conversation started at a conference we recently attended. We listened to an amazing lecturer give his account of what keeping empathy looks like and how it helps us care for our patients and others, like our colleagues. It is also a way to take care of ourselves. We are taught and modeled this idea that what ever service you are on or whatever your role is in taking care of a patient, that if something isn't done or said how you think it should be said, then we immediately judge that person. We judge management of patients, outcomes of patients, etc. We also judge the people that are on the same team as us working together to achieve the same goal! So we introduce another side to consider and ways to keep ourselves in the judgement-free zone.

Limiting beliefs, or this idea of learned helplessness, is a thought or belief about yourself that restricts you in some way. Usually these beliefs are actually false accusations that we make about ourselves. Usually they start somewhere in that non-conscious or subconscious mind. Sometimes we're not even aware that we have them because they've been a belief we've had maybe since our childhood or some other programming in the past. Which may have served us then, but are not serving us now.
In this episode, we discuss what it would look like to become aware of where we have limiting beliefs and what we can do to challenge them for a better result. Once you become aware, we can actually do something about it. As humans, we do things that are comfortable or known because they require less energy and less energy means it's not a lot of effort and it just occurs. In our natural state, we're risk averse. We don't even try cause it'd be too much effort and energy. And so we take the path of least resistance. We choose this option because of the results that it has produced in the past. And the fact is, we believe that that same result will continue to happen. But in reality, we are choosing that option.
With the help of Tony Robbins and his “What do you believe? 16 limiting beliefs that are preventing you from thriving”, we can become aware and begin to change the thoughts that we have had and then work toward overcoming this to produce more positive results.

Did you know that every thought that comes into your mind is not true? This was a mind-blowing revelation! Get it? Ok, well just because we capture a thought in our conscious mind doesn't mean that we need to keep it, especially if it isn't a thought that serves us. In this episode, we talk about where thoughts come from and how they form into a belief and what we can do to change them if they aren't serving us anymore! Good news is there is decades of research on neuroplasticity and we just touch the surface of it on this show. Enjoy!

We are all very familiar writing a prescription. But did you know that you actually have prescription for people? You have a name (label), instructions on how they should act or behave and how much they should behave that way in a given situation. This contributes to why we have the kinds of thoughts we have in certain situations. This can be positive or negative. Most of the time when a feeling is negative, it is because we have created a negative script about this person. What can we do about it? In this episode, the team candidly describes many examples of our effects of the prescriptions we have for people and how to change them to serve us in a more productive and positive way!

Relationships are strange because they're just the thoughts you have about someone. You can have a long distance relationship with someone and still feel close, and in comparison, you can have another person sitting next to you and feel lonely. It is your thoughts about the other person that is the experience of your relationship.
A lot of our relationship problems stem from wanting someone to be different. When we can drop that and accept reality as it is, it frees up a lot of energy to serve ourselves better.
While we can't change another adult person's behavior, we CAN change our own thoughts about it to better serve us. It's never the thing (eg. socks left on the ground) that upsets us - it's the meaning we assign to it (I'm being disrespected v This is low priority for my spouse but isn't necessarily about me).
We can make requests and set boundaries and have consequences, but another person's behavior is ultimately up to them and doesn't cause emotions in us. Even with requests and boundaries, we remain responsible for our own feelings and reactions.
Our most important relationship is the relationship with ourselves. This is the basis upon which all of our other relationships are founded. Loving and appreciating yourself is NOT the same as arrogance. We are all infinitely worthy. There is no "earning" your worth.
This episode also discusses having grace with our family relationships. The principle is the same. We can have boundaries and consequences, but their behaviors and choices don't cause our emotions. And dropping our "prescriptions" for how another "should" be is key in getting our own emotional power back. We teach others how to treat us, and in turn, our children are watching us as the example for how to treat themselves.

In this episode we continue the discussion on the Self Determination Theory, originally presented by Deci and Ryan in 1985. It suggests intrinsic motivations lead to higher fulfillment than extrinsic motivations (see episode #28). For continued motivation, engagement, psychological growth and development, the following three components are necessary:
For many working in medicine, the sense that one or more of these essential components is weak or missing leads to disengagement, lack of fulfillment, burnout, and possibly even leaving medicine altogether. We discuss how using thought work can nourish what we may not have even realized we were missing.

Today's show introduces this concept of the self-determination theory originally written about in a book by two psychologists in 1985. It focuses on how it's so important for our psychological well being that we can do things from a place of wanting growth rather than wanting reward. Self determination theory is a theory of human motivation and personality. That suggests that people are able to become self-determined when their needs for competence, relatedness and autonomy are fulfilled. Check out part 2 for more discussion on this theory and how it relates to physicians and working in healthcare.

On this episode we chat with Dr. Latifat Akintade, a gastroenterologist and the dynamo behind MoneyFitMD podcast and financial wellness program. She talks about her own financial journey and what physicians can do to move toward financial freedom. In a more global sense, physicians being financially secure can be a first step in changing the culture of medicine for the better.
Some common mistakes physicians make in managing their finances:
She talks about the concept of being the CEO of our own lives and remembering that we are our biggest assets. In that way, you'd never overwork and not take care of your star player (you). Also if you think of yourself as the CEO of your life, it wouldn't make sense to ignore your finances and not plan for the future.
Dr. Latifat goes into the 3 components of ideal wealth:
Dr. Latifat estimates accumulating money is about 20% numbers, but the rest is mindset. She talks about simple steps to get started, even if you know nothing right now about money.
Lastly, we talk about her FREE mini-course at www.moneyfitmd.com/feedom. It covers:

In this episode we start a series on the 10 Signs of Emotional Maturity as laid out in this article from americanbehavioralclinics.com. This follows our introduction on Emotional Maturity in Episode #20 explaining what it is. But here are some characteristics of someone exhibiting emotional maturity:
#1: Being Flexible - when things don't go according to plan, emotionally mature people can roll with it and come up with Plans B or even C. They don't let speed bumps derail the entire plan.
#2: Taking Ownership and Responsibility - an emotionally mature person has self-honesty and acceptance. They don't need someone to blame when things go wrong. They can objectively look at their contribution in the situation- for more understanding and a better chance to course correct.
#3: Knowing that They Don't Know Everything - an emotionally mature person is much more interested in learning than always being right.
Next week we will tackle 3 more characteristics of emotionally mature people.

In this episode, we introduce the idea of self-integrity. Which is identifying the values that we have and keeping the internal and external self in alignment with those values. The most important relationship we have is the one we have with ourselves. The way we honor and build this relationship is by showing up for ourselves consistently. This can be in the goals we set, the plans we make or in the way we talk to ourselves. This concept of integrity is essential to creating a steady foundation for which we build the best version of ourselves and that "self" can show up everywhere we are and in everything we do.

TRIGGER WARNING: In the episode we briefly discuss abusive relationships. This is NOT meant to victim-shame. This does not apply to children. This is more a discussion of adults, with resources, who willingly choose to stay in relationships with no resemblance to anything they’d wish for another person they love.
If you are currently in an abusive relationship, please work directly with a local mental health professional specializing in abuse, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233), or text SMART to 88788.
As always, this podcast does not establish a doctor-patient relationship. It is for general educational purposes only.
In this episode, we again speak again with our favorite psychiatrist, Dr. Richa Thapa, about our most important relationship: the relationship we have with ourselves. It is the foundation for all of our other relationships.
You’ll hear:
Quotables:
“You want to fix your marriage. You want to fix your relationship with your children. You think it’s the relationship that you have to work on, but it’s what’s inside.”
“Where’s your parental, mama bear/papa bear instinct FOR YOURSELF?”
“I am still that young child that doesn’t need to be talked to like that. From even myself, ESPECIALLY from myself. I can’t escape my own voice. That’s the one I can’t escape.”
“I think the key with boundaries is following through.”
“Something shifted inside of me at some point. It was like, I gotta be my own friend.”
“Treat yourself like a friend.”
“We can do hard things, and this can be the catalyst you need for creating the life you want. Because you take action when you realize that life is short. At least that was my experience.”
“In every situation, we either win or we learn.”

Dr Thapa:
"I kind of had to just take a step back and reevaluate. I was really burnt out. I felt like I couldn't take care of anyone else's mental health before I could take care of my own."
"my biggest thing going through my cancer journey was, “I don't want to get depressed.” As a psychiatrist, I know what depression can do. I know what anxiety can do. And I know it would just have made everything worse."
"it was like the beginning of a freedom that I didn't know existed."
"this is like cognitive behavior therapy light. It's like a simpler version. But to me, what I liked about it is it was so accessible."
"our wellbeing and there's multiple facets to it, but my love is self-confidence coaching, self-love coaching. I feel like if you can be your own friend and learn to just love yourself in your toughest times you can get through anything."

In this episode, we talk more about bringing awareness to what’s going on in your brain and how it’s ultimately creating the results in your life. Additionally, we start to discuss starting to think about changing the sticky thoughts giving us problems.
The Cognitive Thought Model
A brief review of the cognitive thought model. Anything that happens outside of you and your control is a situation or CIRCUMSTANCE (C). It is by definition neutral and a fact that everyone agrees upon. It isn’t until you have a THOUGHT (T) about the circumstance that you have a FEELING (F). It’s actually the feeling that drives your ACTION (or inaction or brain chatter). The sum total of your actions/inactions is what gives you the RESULTS (R) of your life.
Once you’ve really evaluated the thought - it’s a good time to have compassion for where the brain learned this and why it offered it up. You can become aware of it and allow it to pass in the future. And if you ultimately decide this thought isn’t helpful for your life, you can move toward an intentional model.

Victor Frankl famously said, “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” In this episode, we explore that space.

Quotables:
