Many leaders struggle with the persistent need to be the fixer—the one with all the solutions. While well-intentioned, this mentality can actually disempower your team and hinder growth. In this episode, we'll highlight five powerful questions to help shift your mindset from enabler to empowerer.

You'll learn:

  • How to instill unshakable self-trust in your capabilities beyond being "indispensable."
  • A mindset reframe to embrace success rather than shrink from it.
  • Practical ways to rewire those enabling habits.
  • The small changes that allow your team to take true ownership.

Drawing from personal experience, I get candid about overcoming the allure of the fixer identity. You'll walk away with a fresh perspective on empowered leadership - creating environments for your people's solutions to emerge.

True leaders don't just have all the answers. They empower others to find their own. Ditch the fixer role and unlock exponential impact with the insights and tools shared in this episode.

Share your biggest "aha!" moments with me on social after listening.

In today's episode, we're diving into the first installment of our new monthly series. Each month, we’ll explore a subtopic of communications with practical ways you can use emotional intelligence to enhance it.

For June, it's all about focus. Every week this month, I'll share strategies to help you master your focus. Because let's be honest, this is the time of the year when our calendars are jam-packed with activities and plans, causing our brains to feel like they're melting faster than a bomb pop left out in the sun.

Today, we’re kicking things off by exploring how to start noticing where your focus is and sharing three powerful ways to help you do just that:

  1. Mindfulness: We’ll discuss how mindfulness can help you stay present and focused, plus we'll explore other options beyond traditional meditation.
  2. Journaling: Discover how keeping a journal can help you track your thoughts and identify patterns that impact your focus.
  3. Intention Setting and Reflection: Learn the importance of setting daily intentions and reflecting on them to stay aligned with your goals.

Join us each week in June as we explore more tips and techniques for enhancing your focus.

Today, we’re wrapping up our Mental Health Awareness Month series with a deep dive into empathy and compassion in leadership.

Here’s the lowdown:

  • Empathy vs. Compassion: I break it down simply. Empathy is feeling someone’s emotions, while compassion is taking action to help them. It’s like feeling someone’s pain and then actually helping them up after they’ve tripped.
  • Why it Matters: We explore why empathy and compassion are game-changers in the workplace. Hint: they boost morale, prevent burnout, and lead to better decision-making.
  • Balancing Act: I share how empathy can help us understand others’ struggles, but compassion drives us to take action while still maintaining performance standards.
  • Research Backed: I share insights from a Stanford study showing that compassionate leadership leads to happier employees and increased loyalty.
  • Practical Tips: I dish out three simple ways to lead with compassion: active listening, supportive feedback, and taking action.

And guess what? I’ve got exciting news for June! 🎉

I'm kicking off a new monthly theme focused on communications and emotional intelligence. Get ready for more relieving insights and practical tips!

Our mind is a powerful tool, but sometimes, it can work against us. We've all heard of IQ and EQ, but what about PQ?

Positive Intelligence is the newest mental tool to change those pesky inner critical voices for good. In today's episode we're exploring Positive Intelligence which refers to a concept developed by Shirzad Chamine, which focuses on the balance between your "Saboteurs" and your "Sages" in your mind.

According to Chamine:

  • Saboteurs: are the negative inner voices or thought patterns that undermine one's confidence, resilience, and overall well-being. They can manifest as self-doubt, fear, perfectionism, and other forms of negativity.
  • Sages: On the other hand, your Sages are the positive inner voices that represent your wisdom, resilience, and inner strength. They help you navigate challenges with clarity, empathy, creativity, and confidence.

Positive intelligence involves recognizing and managing your Saboteurs while amplifying the voice of your Sages. It's about cultivating a mindset that fosters self-awareness, emotional agility, and a positive outlook on life. By mastering positive intelligence, you can overcome obstacles, achieve your goals, and live a more fulfilling and purposeful life.

The 10 Saboteurs:

  1. The Judge
  2. The Controller
  3. The Victim
  4. The Avoider
  5. The Hyper-Achiever
  6. The Pleaser
  7. The Stickler
  8. The Hyper-Rational
  9. The Restless
  10. The Hyper-Vigilant

The 5 Sage Powers:

  1. The Sage of Empathy
  2. The Sage of Explore
  3. The Sage of Innovate
  4. The Sage of Navigate
  5. The Sage of Activate

As always, I end the episode with two practical and creative actionable insights that you can apply to your life the minute you're done listening.

In this solo episode, I'm continuing the miniseries on making room for your dreams in midlife.

Running a business, a life, a household or all three can be incredibly chaotic. The most counterintuitive piece of wisdom is that by making room (if even five minutes a day) for your dreams, everything else will feel less stressful. It's like you're undoing the pressure valve release just by dedicating a portion of time to what truly lights you up.

But where do you start? How do you sustain it? What happens when your inner critic has a field day with you? I answer all of these in today's episode.

Life is a constant balancing act, especially for us heart-centered high achievers and overthinkers. We often find ourselves on the path of relentless striving and self-improvement, which can lead to burnout and a sense of never truly being satisfied.

In this episode, I want to help you understand the difference between contentment and complacency and provide you with strategies to notice and practice that difference.

Because, our kind's natural inclination is toward consistent progress and personal growth, it's crucial to recognize when our pursuit of improvement has crossed the line into unhealthy perfectionism, leading us into a cycle of restlessness and discontent. Slippery slope, for sure.

So added in is one of my favorite word swaps from Dr. Shauna Shapiro to have you reframe the way you look at "self-improvement."

If you found value in this episode, please share it with your fellow heart-centered high achievers and overthinkers. Together, we can create a world where contentment and fulfillment coexist with ambition and achievement.

Take care of your hearts, nurture your spirits, and remember, you are worthy of a life that's both purposeful and joyful.

"People feel that in order to love their home or the spaces they spend time in, that means their home needs an expensive full overhaul. I try to encourage people to focus on one little corner at a time. Find something you love that makes you happy when you look at it, or enjoy it and just begin there. Don't worry about what it will match etc. Shortly, you will begin loving a lot of little corners. That's what design is about."

What better way to ring in the season of the dreaded darkened days than with a burst of sunshine and some dopamine decorating right in your own home? Why not make your home the place you can't wait to come home to that is uniquely an uplifting expression of you?

This is exactly what we're diving into with our next guest, Gina Sangiacomo, owner of Abode Boutique and Timeless Interiors. Gina shares her story that led her to follow her passion for design while juggling a family of seven (yep, I know - you read that right). She'll take you on a whirlwind tour through her life and how her family keeps her grounded and firmly rooted in her true self.

Along the way, she'll sprinkle some design magic with practical hacks that can transform your space, no matter the size of your budget, all delivered with her signature blend of tenacity and humor.

By the time you've absorbed Gina's wisdom, you'll find yourself eagerly anticipating the upcoming dark days as an opportunity to nestle in and awaken your inner interior artist. It won't be the season of gloom; it'll be the "Season to Align + Design," where your home becomes a canvas for your inspiration.

In this solo episode, I expand on my conversation from this past Sunday's episode with therapist and author Katherine Morgan Schafler. Katherine's book, The Perfectionist's Guide to Losing Control, completely reframed not only how I look at perfectionism as a whole but as an asset when embraced adaptively.

I dedicate this episode to my kids as I continue to learn how to lean into being a whole and loving human from the inside out, hoping that this models to them how to do the same.

In this episode, we'll cover three ways to move from being heady and heart ached with perfectionism to whole, human, and heart-centered.

Here they are:

  1. How to be truly authentic - walking the walk vs talking the talk.

  2. How to release yourself from the grips of other people's judgment (and your own).

  3. How to build a regular and sustainable practice of self-compassion and why it matters more than you know.

On today's episode, we're diving straight into the messy waters of perfectionism. As a whole, we have a very stereotypical societal view of perfectionism and what it looks like... until now. Thank the lord for Katherine Morgan Schafler. Katherine is a therapist and author of the tour de force, The Perfectionist's Guide to Losing Control: A Path to Peace and Power. This book needs to be required reading for all human beings, beginning at birth. Because whether you are a self-proclaimed perfectionist or know someone who is, there is a tendency to feel A LOT around this subject. We hear progress over perfection peppered through the leadership and personal development world quite often, but it still doesn't seem to be doing the trick to stick. I promise you that after you tune into this wise, refreshing, and witty conversation, you will never see or feel the same about perfectionism again. Katherine's book, paired with our conversation, is the soul and heart balm needed in the world right now. Your love and compassion for yourself and others will be expanded beyond measure. Your understanding of our shared human need to feel connection and a sense of purpose will be deepened. Your ability to have a newfound appreciation for patience, not being passivity but profoundly productive, will blow your mind. Plus, if you're a fellow mental reframe lover, you're in for a treat! Life throws us curveballs when we least expect them, from personal challenges to global crises. But it's precisely in these moments that finding joy can be a lifeline. It's not about denying your pain or struggles but rather about finding a glimmer of light in the darkness.

The first and most crucial point is that joy is a powerful emotional resource. Amid adversity, joy can provide a much-needed break, a mental reset, and a reminder that life's complexities also include beautiful moments. It can remind us of our resilience and the simple pleasures we often take for granted.

So, how can we find joy in these trying times? Why is it so essential to allow joy in? And what does releasing guilted gratitude have to do with it?

You're about to find out. I'm glad you're here.

In this solo episode within the special series, Create Like a Mother, I'll be expanding on one of the key points that this past Sunday's guest, Drea Bendewald, shared on what makes women's circles so unique: active listening. We have all heard this term before, and you may even have given it a run. Still, it can be very difficult to maintain. The hope in today's episode is that you feel clearer about the benefits of strengthening your listening muscles, noticing specific roadblocks that may be in your way, and establishing a practice to overcome them.

Drea is an actor you may know from such hits as Seinfeld, Ellen, Friends, and Entourage, to name a few. She is also a private acting coach and teaches UCLA's Acting for the Camera. In this solo episode, I expand on my conversation with this past Sunday's guest, Alli Ryan, artist and creator of Kindful Art. Alli and I discussed many topics, including how she listened to her inner nudge, which led her to create Kindful Art.

Today, I share my FAVORITE exercises to strengthen your relationship with your intuition. Whether you're a newbie with listening to your intuitive sensations or a seasoned pro, this episode is sure to offer doable ways for you to check in with clarity and confidence.

One exercise share is: S.T.O.P., Collaborate and Listen

S: Senses (Do a body scan of your five senses to get you out of your head)

T: Take a breath (Take one deep breath to drop into yourself)

O: Open Your Hands (Signals safety to your body so you stay out of fight or flight mode)

P: Partner up with Yourself (Ask your Higher Self, "What is the next best step for me to take the highest good for myself and all involved in this situation?")

In this solo mid-week booster, I share the anchoring three steps of noticing, neutralizing, and normalizing your emotions. These three steps clearly build on each other, no matter how intense your emotions may feel. I share a few different ways to neutralize (counterbalance) after noticing so you don't feel like you're stranded in the oftentimes panicked open water feeling of...well, your feelings.

*Enrollment is open for my eight-week online course, Get Ahead of Your Head. This course is for high-achieving leaders and entrepreneurs looking for science-backed and creative sustainable strategies to build a life-changing practice to stop overthinking and start understanding how to regain control of your mind.

In this episode, I share two of my offerings launching in October. The way I create anything is by asking myself, "Would I want to consume this?" I keep honing and chipping at it until the answer is "Hell yes!". These offers fall into that category, and I'm SO excited to share them with you.

First up is my signature eight-week online course, Get Ahead of Your Head. This course is for high-achieving leaders and entrepreneurs looking for actionable and sustainable mental wellness strategies to stop overthinking and start understanding how to regain control of their minds. I dive into this course's who, what, where, when, and why so you can choose if it's right for you. I also offer 1:1 coaching packages, so if the group thing isn't your jam, I've got you covered. Either way, after listening, feel free to schedule a chemistry call with me to see which fits your current lifestyle more.

The second offering is a series for the podcast called Create Like a Mother, that has been a decade-long in the brewing. Starting October 1st, I'll be having weekly guests to share their stories and strategies on how they continue to nurture their creative calling while not falling prey to the additional bucket of voices that clog our brains when we take on the role of being a mom. The guests will consist of everyday and higher-profile women who I deeply admire and appreciate in every way.

So be sure to subscribe to the podcast with a rating and review when you're done, and then join in on my weekly newsletter so you don't miss a beat.

"My calling in life is to help you discover the real you. The one you put aside until the time is right. The one that says, 'maybe one day.' " - Anna K. Morris

In today's episode, I sit down with mindset and journaling coach Anna K. Morris. Journaling coach? Yes! Anna shares good reason why having a coach by your side as you build your journaling practice is intricately connected to how you shift your mindset to work for you instead of against you. Anna courageously shares stories within her life that instantly remind us that although stories may be personal, their lessons are always universal.

Anna has an innate skill of listening to what really matters to you. She's helped clients who are business owners align their offerings more closely with their passions. And in doing so, their excitement and performance has been reinvigorated. She's also helped clients see blindspots in their belief systems and helped them take their performance and happiness to the next level.

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS

  • How journaling can be a sustainable place to reconnect with yourself and others.

  • The beautiful analogy of house designing and coming home to yourself.

  • How having "all the stuff" that should make you happy can confuse you from truly being happy, and how Anna changed that belief system in herself.

  • How to have less fear around the breakdown and more trust in what's on the other side.

  • Anna also shares ways to stop overthinking that can easily be integrated into your life.

In this solo episode, we're diving into the ever-human and equally sting-y topic of rejection. If we gave out Overthinking Awards, rejection would win 🥇 first prize. Every. Time.

Here's the thing: Rejection happens to everybody. Acknowledging this shared humanity is a hallmark practice of self-compassion, but still, it doesn't always soften the blow. It's super coachy to say that rejection is what you make it. And — I'm still gonna say it. There's always a lesson in there somewhere. Which doesn't mean you have to dig for it or force yourself into positive thinking. Be kind and honest to yourself and do your best to find a trusted confidante to talk to because being alone with your thoughts will not be helpful.

My go-to is usually to call a good friend who will either offer an ear to listen, a hug to give, or a spicy "Eff 'em! They don't know what they're missing" to keep it real. Still, the more we can find ways to adjust ourselves internally first, the better.

If you're facing rejection or secretly reeling and resenting from a years ago snub, this one's for you.

I'll be running minisodes in the next few weeks that dive deeper into the topic of self-leadership: what it is, why it matters, and how you can create a sustainable practice that works for you and your lifestyle. Be sure to subscribe to The Sow to Speak podcast to avoid missing a beat.

Have you ever asked yourself what thoughts are working in favor of the life you want to live and how you want to feel, and what thoughts are working against that?

This is one of the most powerful questions you can ever ask yourself to regain control of your mind so you can live a truly authentic and fulfilling life. This is the exact question that today's guest, Brooke Ansley, asked herself that led her to the powerful line of work that she does today. In this episode we're discussing the 100% necessary and equally unsexy topic of delegation. If you are an entrepreneur, you know that not delegating is not an option. Still, you may not be doing it. The thought of it may add more overwhelm to your already overloaded mind. You may feel that it would be faster to do any of the tasks yourself, or it will take more time to teach someone how to do it right, or maybe you don't even know where to start.

No matter where you fall on the spectrum of delegation drudgery, you are in for major relief as I jump into an enlightening conversation with Valerie Trapunsky, CEO of Chatterboss.

ChatterBoss is the brainchild of Valerie, who founded the company in 2017 after a decade spent working as a top-level assistant for A-list celebrities and as the Chief of Staff for high-net-worth individuals and CEOs. During that time, Valerie developed a passion for effective problem-solving and became committed to bringing the same level of excellent service to solo entrepreneurs and small business owners.

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS

  • How to begin delegating even if you've never done it before.
  • Why delegating is essential to a thriving business and life.
  • The biggest challenges entrepreneurs face in diving into delegating.
  • How looking at delegation as a collaboration can improve relationships on your team and beyond.

In this episode, I offer a way to flip your internal script that will boost your confidence, focus, and delivery.
Whether you're prepping for a dream job interview, ideal client pitch, amazing speaking opportunity, or an on-camera anything, this tip will be your mental floss to keep you clear, present, and confident.

We think A LOT. Not the least bit shocking, I'm sure. Any guesses on how many thoughts we think per day? Or more importantly, the percentage of those thoughts that are repetitive? Get ready to have your mind blown as I share both numbers at the top of the episode.

No matter the numbers, sometimes our thoughts are for us, and more often than not, well, they're not. The good news is there's something that you can do about it and I'm going to share with you ways to flip the light on your thoughts and have them be more supportive than unhelpful in today's episode.

Join me and Dave Casullo, CEO of Rock City Development and Daneli Partners as we share our perspectives and insights on three key areas within leadership.

First up: Influence. This word carries with it so much power and oftentimes much misinterpretation. Living in a world that is consumed with influencers, it can be difficult to hear the call and gain clarity on how to create true, genuine influence as a leader. We all have our own unique mark and contribution to make in the world. Dave and I share clear and doable ways that you can amp up your influence and implement into your life the minute the episode is done. Enjoy!

HIGHLIGHTS:

  1. What is true influence and why does it matter?
  2. How does storytelling play a part in creating impact and influence as a leader?
  3. How do you begin to lead from your heart and then go to your head?
  4. Why bringing to mind two to three people who made a positive influence in your life helps guide you in becoming a leader who does the same?

Dave shares Bates Communications' storytelling framework:

  1. The Set-Up (The Who, What, Where, When)

  2. The Build-Up (Give enough context about the setting)

  3. The Scene (The dilemma/challenge moment)

  4. The Resolution (What came to be)

  5. The Lesson (What was learned)

"The intuitive mind is a sacred gift, and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift. " - Albert Einstein.

This episode is all things intuition. It's a biggie, so I'll be dropping in mini-episodes throughout the season that covers different ways to tap into and remind you to access this ultimate superpower. We all have this innate ability. Sure, some of us were born into the world with it more easily accessible, but we all have the same ability to partner up with it for a lifetime.

Intuition is one of the most important relationships you will ever have because not only is it with you for as long as you have a pulse, but I believe it's a direct link to that essence that is bigger than all of us and connects us all as a collective. Your intuition is not just created to protect you but, equally important, is there to guide and as an inner compass. And if you let it, you can let it be a constant scavenger hunt that has you on the lookout for the golden tickets that are always in and around us.

IN THIS EPISODE

I highlight a few different ways for you to reacquaint or continue to build your relationship with your intuition. I offer exercises that range from noticing where intuition hits you in your body and the feeling and sensation it creates when your body tells you "Yes" or "No."

I also share creative and playful ways to allow yourself to shift into a receptive mode so that you can practice noticing when your intuition is speaking to you.

"Great ideas need landing gear as well as wings."

This is one of the best quotes about ideas I've ever heard. Wings and weight are needed for ideas to take flight. We know that, but it's much easier to offer this sage advice when we do not have the idea. When we do, we all know it's much more nerve-racking to give it legs. That is until you get used to practicing it.

This mini-episode aims to inspire you to dust off that idea (you know the one) and do something with it. All ideas sound great... in our heads. Where the truth comes is having courage and faith in acting on them. The actions do not need to be big at all. Most ideas built into something sustainable started with tiny action steps. In this episode, I share my company, Sow to Speak, as an example of something that started from a seed of an idea and grew from there. It had ups and down and all arounds, yet still, something stuck, and I followed it.

I hope this episode inspires you to let your idea lead you to follow its nudges. The more you practice listening in, the clearer you'll be able to hear the direction it gives you.

EXERCISES FROM THIS EPISODE

The 5 Whys Exercise

  1. At the top of a paper, write down your idea. (E.g., "I created a workshop called Sow to Speak.")

  2. Then write the question "Why?" and answer it. (E.g., To help entrepreneurs get clear on their messaging.)

  3. Then write "Why" again and answer it. (E.g., Because then they'll feel more excited and connected to their business and audience.)

  4. Repeat "Why" again (E.g., Because they'll have more integrity, confidence, and purpose for what they created and who they created it for.)

  5. Repeat "Why" again (E.g., Because we need more conscious businesses and brands that better the world.)

The Short Senses Exercise

*This exercise is a shortened version of the 5 Senses Exercise. The aim is to have a strategy to catch when you're focusing on your idea, and the naggy inner voice pipes up in your head so you can quiet it down. It's fast, and it works.

  1. Name three things that you see. If possible, pointing to or touching each item creates an even stronger result because it brings in the additional sense of touch.

If you want to expand to all 5 Senses, it could look like this:

  1. Name five things that you see.

  2. Name four things that you hear.

  3. Name three things that you can feel (physically, not emotionally)

  4. Name two things that you can smell.

  5. Name one thing that you can taste.

We are so excited to kick off Kris Notes, the first sub-series of The Closet Series. Kris Notes is a wink-wink to the much-loved Cliff Notes that aided us all in junior high and high school English class.

Once a month, I'll highlight a book I've devoured to share with you, the bits that had me squealing with pure joy and wincing with pure humanness. These books make me wish I could shout their message from the rooftop and drone drop them on every doorstep, so instead, I'll drop it from my mic. I'll take an exercise or question directly from the book to pose to you or create one from insight gleaned because we all know knowledge attained with no application does jack squat. There needs to be integration into your life for the message to stick. So think of these exercises as mental sticky notes for you to put into action.

First up: The Perfectionist's Guide to Losing Control: A Path to Peace and Power by Katherine Morgan Schafler

This BOOK.

"We hand women the boulder of balance, remind them that it's impossibly heavy and that's what makes them superheroes, and then parrot-preach self-care at them: 'Balance and self-care, balance and self-care, balance and self-care.' Yes, thank you. I heard you."
Cue: Long-awaited exhale heard around the globe.
There is nothing that THRILLS me more than a rebellious, powerful, wise, and genuine reframe that challenges the strait-jacketed antiquated societal labels that do nothing other than make us feel crappier and less deserving about ourselves and our natural deepest desires.
The last time I was in awe of a bounded tour de force was Glennon Doyle's Untamed and Elizabeth Gilbert's Big Magic.
All three have in common: cracking your heart wide open with their fierce radiant honesty that makes you feel "wholly" moly SEEN—soul balm at its best.

Schafler flips the script on perfectionism as a superpower to behold, not a character flaw to begone. By understanding what type of perfectionist you are, and you can be many (take the quiz here), you see yourself in an ENTIRELY new way (not a NEW you, a new way; very different and very needed), and you become your biggest ally.
It's witty, whip-smart, and loving - like the best friends we could ever ask for who will tell us the truth with kind candor. If I had a dollar for every time I dropped my head and whispered, "Thank you" and "Damn, I wish I wrote that line"...

Learn more about Katherine Morgan Schafler, buy The Perfectionist's Guide to Losing Control, and take the quiz all right here.

You can follow Katherine on Instagram here.

The songs mentioned in the episode are:

Shadows of the Night by Pat Benatar

Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow by Carole King

I Go to Extremes by Billy Joel

Burning Down the House by The Talking Heads

Everybody Wants to Rule the World by Tears for Fears

Waitin' on a Sunny Day by Bruce Springsteen

Unconditional (I) by Arcade Fire

Age of Anxiety by Arcade Fire

These three words will support you in stopping your ruminating mind in its tracks.
Whatever situation you have playing over and over again in your mind, put this three-step grounding question practice to work and see how it instantly allows nagging rumination to alchemize into healthy reflection.
Then take more aligned action and see how you move forward a bit quicker and lighter.
✔️Keep
✔️Change
✔️ Leave
1. Keep: What behavior of yours would you keep? This question allows you first to celebrate what you did well or are proud of.
2. Change: What behavior of yours would you change? This question gives any regret a chance to surface and then helps be proactive next time.
3. Leave: What behavior of yours would you leave behind? Possibly linked to your answer to number two and also gives you a chance to practice letting go.
Examples:
✔️Internal cross-departmental workshop
Keep: Your warm, competent delivery style.
Change: The room setup. More round tables, fewer rectangles.
Leave: The caffeine for afterward!
✔️ Feedback conversation w/ direct report
Keep: Direct communication style
Change: Setting it up for earlier in the morning (when you both have more energy)
Leave: Having another supervisor in the room
It gives you more agency over how you handle situations that may seem slightly out of your control.
Give it a shot and see how it goes.

If you are looking for leadership concepts that work, along with fresh insight to have you see your ability to influence as a leader from a whole new perspective, you're in the right place. We hear about leadership all the time and for a good reason. We are in dire need of leaders who have their feet on the ground, hearts centered, and eyes focused on a vision that serves a purpose greater than themselves and a world better for all of us. Our next guest is going to show us the way to do just that.

Dave Casullo is CEO of two successful startups, Daneli Partners and Rock City Development, each serving to accelerate the region of Central NY’s economic progress through real estate and leadership development. Dave considers himself a steward and an upbuilder, and he shares what both of those roles look like and how you can do your part to contribute to our community here in the Mohawk Valley if you’re local. And if you’re not, how you can use Dave’s wisdom to contribute to upbuilding and serving your own community.

Feeling in need of a reset?

A reset is the It Kid of the most desired feeling of high-achieving leaders like you. Which is probably equally relieving and unsurprising.
It's the top response clients give when I ask them, "How are you feeling?" or "What do you need most right now?"

If I had a box of Milk Duds 😋 for every time I heard: I need a reset.

So it got me thinking...

There is so much benefit in reflecting on moments when you were not feeling your best and possibly didn't show up your glowiest to a situation when really what you needed beforehand was time to reset.

There's also that thing called life happening at lightning speed, and you don't always have the luxury of reflection in the middle of the day, but you also don't have time to burn out to a crisp. So what do you do?

When you're shifting gears from one meeting to another or transitioning from your work life to your home life feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, or frustrated, this strategy is one to keep in your back pocket because it is super fun, incredibly effective, and easily accessible.

The Closet Series brings topics that we often keep in the closet to light so that you feel less in the dark and more relieved, inspired, and ready to get out of your head and back into your life.

Whenever I'm triggered, and my emotions are about to do anything from getting the best of me to derailing me completely, I remember (most of the time) 😮‍💨 this practice gets me back on track.

Learning how to regulate your emotional system is one of the healthiest practices you can learn. Since everything is connected, our emotions are often the king or queen of our physical health. If we can work with and through our emotions instead of cutting them or acting like it's "us vs. them," we'll often be greatly surprised at how it affects everything in our life.

In this episode, I share a four-step process to keep handy whether you're wanting to familiarize yourself more with your emotional landscape or use it when you notice a strong need to regulate your system.

This four-step framework is simple to do. The hardest part is remembering to do it. So the more you can incorporate it into your everyday life, starting with low-stakes situations, the better. To start, give it a try when you're feeling anywhere from content to full-on joy because those are usually emotions we enjoy sitting in, and you're strengthening the same mental muscles needed to notice when you're feeling unpleasant: anywhere from frustrated to highly agitated or deep down.

Have questions on emotional intelligence and mindset that you want to have answered in future episodes? Let us know, and we'll be sure to include them.

"Guys are notorious for, myself included, for... you don't want to be the one - ' I don't want to call this guy 'cause if he doesn't pick up, what am I going to say? Do I leave a message? Do I leave a text message?' But you got to get over it. You got to take the step and say I'm gonna be the one."

We're diving straight into the power and necessity of male friendships. This goes so under the radar, and at the growing rate of depression in men, male relationships are essential in creating a unique and vital sense of connection and belonging.

I could've gone to an "expert in the field." Instead, I chose to go to an expert in experience. Graeme Watson is a guy's guy who is also the husband of my dear friend Kelli Watson (if her name looks familiar, it's because, as co-founder and CEO of Scriptor Publishing, she has been a repeat guest on the series.)

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Graeme shares his culturally diverse experiences of male friendships and how they've shaped him into who he is today.
  • Through shared stories, we're reminded that initial impressions are not always as simple as they first seem.
  • We discuss the distinct role of male friendships in creating a fulfilling life.
  • Graeme also shares how to navigate the often tricky waters of reaching out, especially when you need support the most.

"I've been doing this work for thirty years, and every person I've worked with, if you ask them what the thoughts that go through their heads, it's all about the same and boils down to some form of 'I suck.'"

Josh Pais is a film and television actor who has starred in shows such as Ray Donovan, Younger, Maniac, and the feature films Joker, Motherless Brooklyn, The Station Agent, and Spoiler Alert. Josh can next be seen starring in Netflix's A Man in Full opposite Jeff Daniels. In addition to a thriving acting career, Josh founded the breakthrough high-performance training program, Committed Impulse. Yes, in part to help you stop thinking that you suck and instead move your attention to your body to support you in giving honest and genuine performances, whether on a stage in front of hundreds or thousands, pitching to a dream client, or presenting in a boardroom.

Sow to Speak asked Josh to hop in the closet to discuss how Committed Impulse's revolutionary approach helps us move from our mind's "mental hijack" to the present and magic of our body. Josh shares how Committed Impulse came to be, how his childhood set him up perfectly to bring this all to life, and his one superpower that significantly impacts the program and its participants. The CI technique transcends industries by offering an enlivening, incredibly effective, and fun invitation to explore how we bring forth authentic and captivating work when we create from being in our body instead of in our mind. Every. Single. Time. Who doesn't want more of that?

Happy New Year!

January 1st.

This sweet little date has a lot riding on its shoulders.

There's A LOT of pressure for one day to carry and for you too. And if you're honest, the weight carried with this date oftentimes comes from outside yourself.

So, whether you are in love with the idea of resolutions, highly intimidated by them, or in total repulsion of them, one way to keep yourself in check is to realign with your core values. You may be saying, "Been there, done that," or starting to snooze. Great - that's a sure sign that you've never reconnected with your values in the Sow to Speak way.

Listen in as I kick off 2023 with a solo episode to share a process to help you reconnect with yourself so you can take more intentional action to jump-start your year.

My tech-challenge is inhibiting me from attaching the core values pdf here so feel free to email me (with the subject line: "Core Values Exercise" to have the core value exercise sent directly to you: kristy@sowtospeak.com

Meet Bernie.

Bernie Freytag is a bona fide creative. He is a writer, an illustrator, a wanderer, and a ponderer. Lucky us, Bernie is on the show to discuss his latest book, The Curious Reality in Imagination. This is Bernie's second book, following his debut Find Wonder in the Ordinary. In our conversation, Bernie shares his love of creativity while inviting us all to find ways to be open to the possibilities around us and beyond. Bernie is the poster child for what happens when you're open to receiving the creative messages that the Universe is always whispering to us.

The Curious Reality in Imagination is a walk on the wild side of what can happen if you allow yourself to say "Yes." It's a nudge, reminding us that the practice and surprise of "paying attention" are always available to us, and when we listen magic happens.

"The Universe can give us brief glimpses into its imagination. We can see this in the beauty of nature, and we can also see it within special moments in each day, through what people categorize as coincidences or serendipities. It’s my belief that when we open up our own imagination, we can synch up with the Universe, and find some sort of flow state. A place common within creativity, though I believe we have the potential to see it in the reality of every single day."

Meet Gary.

Gary Bagley was one of my first bosses out of college and set the bar very high for others to follow his leadership grace, care, and passion. Currently, Gary is an executive coach, educator, strategist, and keynote speaker. At the time of our conversation, Gary was the executive director of New York Cares, the largest volunteer non-profit organization serving the five boroughs of New York City. Gary and I sit down to discuss how giving can immediately alleviate the feeling of hopelessness and replace it with not just renewed hope in humanity and the world but also a necessary sense of agency within our own lives to be a part of the change we want to see in our communities and on a global level.

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Volunteering's powerful impact not only on each individual or population served but also on its immediate community.
  • How volunteering is a reciprocal gift to both the receiver and the giver.
  • The NY Cares initiatives and their impact on the New York City community before and during the pandemic.
  • How a previous career in the arts has significantly informed the work, Gary does now.
  • The inherent larger effect that volunteering has on all of us by enhancing our sense of interconnectedness, humanity, and deep empathy.

Meet Jackie.

Jackie Michel is the author of "Hooray for Parenting" and the owner and director of J. Michel Associates, a company that offers coaching, counseling, and consulting. Sow to Speak asked Jackie to hop back in the closet to dive deeper into the topic of parenting. So much of what Jackie shares comes back to cultivating a strong relationship and connection with ourselves first.

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Teaching our kids genuine gratitude (while relearning it ourselves)
  • Being a parent who practices true presence over presents
  • The power of story to foster a deep connection between the ones we love

A little more about Jackie and her book, "Hooray for Parenting!": Realizing the importance of the skills and training available to leaders and managers, Jackie believed parents deserved similar insights and wisdom relative to parenting, and it should be available in an easily accessible format. With her extensive experience working both as a psychotherapist and an executive coach with people and kids from every walk of life, she has integrated up-to-date information with her transformational learning approach in the online course created for parents, "Mastering the Art of Raising Great Kids."

Now in her new book, "Hooray for Parenting, Your Guide to Raising Great Kids," Jackie likens the parenting journey to looking into a crystal. No matter what facet one focuses on, all the others are reflected. Those multiple reflections or themes and prerequisites for creative masterful parenting include love, learning, listening, patience, practice, using the power of limits, the power of mistakes, courage, and trust.

Meet Rachel.

Rachel Daughtry is the Director of Agency Relations at The Compassion Coalition, based in Central NY. She is the third guest in our Heart-Centered Leadership series.

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Rachel discusses how The Compassion Coalition came to be (yes, it's scalable!)
  • How they're creating major contributions and change in our community and beyond
  • The necessity to be a heart-centered leader during this time
  • How The Compassion Coalition is collaborating with (the other two guests in the mini-series) Chobani and The Center (formerly known as The Refugee Center of Utica).

The Compassion Coalition is an entrepreneurial-based, innovative nonprofit that focuses on community-based giving, meeting needs as they arise. This means their giving is different from year to year, as the needs of the community change. Compassion Coalition Inc. is funded by their grocery store, Bargain Grocery, which allows them to be self-sustaining, and allows their giving to be fluid. This means that as a non-profit, they do not rely on any government grants or ongoing funding for any operational costs.

This allows them to meet needs that would otherwise not be met in our community by other nonprofits, schools, or emergency food pantries due to strict grant regulations. Compassion Coalition has created its own funding source, allowing for sustainability while also bringing the creation of food accessibility and equality to a food desert.

Rachel has been working in the not-for-profit sector for ten plus years and has a passion for seeing community collaboration to bring positive change. Working for the last 7 years in the field of substance abuse and mental health therapy before joining the team at Compassion Coalition. Rachel holds a Bachelors's degree from Utica College. When not coming up with new creative ways to serve our community, she keeps busy keeping up with her three sons.

Yay for Grandmas!

COCKTAIL RECIPES (source: www.inspiredtaste.net)

GRANDMA DOT's adult beverage of choice: SLOE GIN FIZZ

Recipe PREP 5mins TOTAL 5mins

A sloe gin fizz is refreshing and delightfully balances sweet against tart. It begins with Sloe Gin, then we add fresh lemon, a little sugar, and club soda. Makes 1 drink

YOU WILL NEED 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) sloe gin 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) gin 1 to 1 1/2 ounce (2 to 3 tablespoons) fresh lemon juice 1 teaspoon simple syrup or 1 to 2 teaspoons sugar 2 ounces (1/4 cup) club soda Lemon slice for serving Ice

DIRECTIONS Add sloe gin, regular gin, 1/2 ounce of lemon juice, and simple syrup (or sugar) to a cocktail shaker filled halfway with ice. Shake vigorously until chilled. Taste then adjust with additional lemon or simple syrup/sugar. Shake. Strain cocktail into a glass filled with ice, then top with club soda and garnish with a lemon wedge.

MIMI's adult beverage of choice: OLD-FASHIONED Seriously Good Old Fashioned

Recipe PREP 5mins TOTAL 5mins With just three main ingredients, it’s simple to make, and there are lots of options for adding your own spin. Most commonly, bourbon or rye whiskey is used. That doesn’t mean to say that there aren’t other options. Gin, brandy, and rum all work really well. We particularly love switching the whiskey for a dark, aged rum. Makes 1 Drink

YOU WILL NEED 1 to 2 teaspoons simple syrup; see our tips for making simple syrup 3 dashes bitters, Angostura is great and readily available 2 ounces mid-range bourbon or rye whiskey One 2-inch piece of orange peel, optional 1 to 2 maraschino cherries, optional

Meet Peter.

Peter kicks off our three-part mini-series on heart-centered leadership.

At the time of our conversation in October 2020, Peter was the President and COO of Chobani. Peter is now the CEO of Impossible Foods.

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Peter shares how Chobani was born from a heart-centered place and how they've sustained and strengthened that foundational core value for over a dozen years.
  • He also discusses the impact Chobani is making on our world through their initiatives that lend to Chobani's natural humanity-first collaborative nature.
  • Peter shares how Chobani's ongoing collaborations with Utica's non-profits, The Center (formally the Refugee Center), and The Compassion Coalition is a natural fit and once again shows how when people come together to do good, it's inevitability good for business and the communities they serve.

Peter shows us that the past few years have been like a long walk home to who we truly are: heart-centered humans. In the end, we learn that through a greater perspective, we're all able to rehumanize ourselves by focusing on what's in front of us and how by strengthening our communities, we're all making the entire world a better place to be.

Meet Angela.

Sow to Speak asked Anglea Lussier to share her insight and four-step process to uncover your authentic voice. We talk about honing your intuition, trusting yourself, and the decisive act of slowing down before doing or saying anything. Most of all, Angela reminds us once again that it's always an inside job.

Angela Lussier is an award-winning professional speaker, six-time author, two-time TEDx presenter, and entrepreneur. After starting a career consulting business in 2009 with no marketing budget, Angela decided to offer free workshops to become known in her field. In her first year of business, she gave hundreds of presentations, published her first book, spoke at TEDx, and started to receive calls from corporations and conferences asking her how much she charged to speak. This launched her into a speaking career she never expected to have.  Today, Angela is the founder of the Speaker Sisterhood, one of Boston's Best Speakers and she hosts Claim the Stage, a public speaking podcast for women. Her motto: Stop waiting. Start creating.

“People, especially parents, need to think through what it is that’s driving them, and when they understand that, they also understand more about their children.” - Jackie Michel

Jackie Michel is a parenting coach and the author of Hooray for Parenting. Jackie is exactly the type of human you'd want to be giving our parenting advice: wise, humble, thoughtful, and kind. I've read (and re-read) Hooray for Parenting (links below) and love everything that Jackie offers. It's like a good friend is sitting with you supporting you all along the long and winding parenting road. Jackie now also offers a workbook that is the perfect complement to the book itself. At the end of the day, what Jackie offers is that the more you do the work to show up and understand yourself, the better you'll be able to show up and understand your kids.

In this episode, Jackie and I discuss how to parent from a place of honesty, connection, and trust. Listen in as Jackie, and I dish on the neuroscience behind development, growth mindset, gratitude practices, self-esteem, boundaries, and raising teens. Whew! This is a special episode because there's A LOT to cover. I broke it into three sections to remind you to pause and reflect on each section before moving through to the next.

Section 1: Focus on mindfulness and neuroscience on development (Resources highlighted: Dr. Daniel Siegl and Goldie Hawn's book 10 Mindful Minutes )

Section 2: Self-esteem, the importance of modeling for our kids, and Carol Dweck's fixed and growth mindset

Section 3: Gratitude, setting boundaries, and raising teens

Our hope is that you find it incredibly beneficial in deepening your relationship with your kids and yourself.

"Great people do things before they're ready."

One of my all-time favorite quotes by Amy Poehler is the perfect way to introduce musician and artist, Keren Vita as the next guest in Sow to Speak's closet series.

How often do we say no out of fear? When's the last time you shifted your focus to the process of whatever you were working on instead of being overwhelmed by the finished product? Keren and I dish on all things creativity, namely her undertaking (undertaking? overtaking? who's to say) of the downtown Utica Adirondack Bank building art project. We also hit on why saying a big, fat "YES!" to what scares you the most is sometimes the fastest track to overcoming your fear. Our hope is that you leave our conversation to take a chance on whatever you've wanted to do, but have let fear hold you back. If anything, Keren shows us all how the power of watching someone face their fear and go for it inspires us all to do the same.

Most notably Keren had a solo (sold out!) art show at the historic Stanley Theatre. Next up, she'll be the focused artist of the month at Gerber's Tavern with all exhibited pieces available for purchase.

Our original conversation aired: August 25, 2020

You can find it at Sow to Speak's YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSgapdNnW9Q&t=1091

Meet Pete.

Pete Blanchfield is the CEO of StoneRidge Hydro, a company that invests in run-of-river hydroelectric dams to restore, rebuild and return a reliable, long-term renewable power resource to local communities.

Pete is very knowledgeable about finance and business and shares the lessons he's learned along the way to help you in your own career.

Long before the Great Resignation, Pete and I had a conversation about when to stay and when to go. Although Pete and I were specifically speaking to entrepreneurs, Pete's tips transcend to the often daunting career choices as a whole. His tips are as relevant today as they were when our conversation first aired on the video series two years ago.

You may be an entrepreneur or start-up at the crossroads of that age-old question, "do I stay or do I go?" Do I carry on or cut the cord? You may be thinking, when do I say when? Pete offers clear and doable advice on checking in with yourself before making any decisions. Pete also hits upon strategies and examples to best pivot your business. Most importantly, he offers his perspective on how he chooses to communicate to understand and enhance his empathy and self-awareness.

I hope this helps shed some light on which direction is best for you. Please share with anyone you feel may benefit.

Meet Kaysie.

"Find a group of people who challenge and inspire you, spend a lot of time with them, and it will change your life." – Amy Poehler

No better quote can embody Sow to Speak's next guest. We've had a lot of fantastic local guests in the closet and since we're all about inclusivity in the 315, we're venturing all the way to Austin, TX, to have our second Closet Crasher, Kaysie Seitz Brown, Associate Professor of Dance at Texas State University, as well as one of my best friends for twenty years, highlight the art of collaboration.

Kaysie I first met nearly twenty years ago as creatives. Doing what else? Living in New York City, waiting tables and bartending at the cajun neighborhood hot spot, ACME. It was an instant friendship of kindred spirits continuing to inspire each of our creative endeavors to this day. Kaysie and I gab on how 🥳 COLLABORATION 🥳 is the bedrock everywhere from the restaurant and stage floor to the classroom and boardroom. We build off of each other, sharing doable and transferable creative exercises that you can use with your team no matter the size. All being brought home with Kaysie shining a light on the dancer within us all.

Meet Carol Ann.

Carol Ann D'Accurzio has been a high school English teacher for over twenty years. She also is the mother of three, two teenagers and one tween. So, suffice to say, Carol Ann KNOWS teenagers. Our conversation originally centered around tips on how you could harmoniously co-exist with teens in the house during COVID and beyond. Fast forward two years later, and I hope you'll see, as I did, that what Carol Ann shares are life lessons and strategies no matter what adversity we inevitably face in life. A few of the gems are ways to step back and allow leadership skills to rise up within our kids in the home and the importance of how small acts of support for colleagues go a long way.

"We all hear how students need us, but we need them too."

We hope you enjoy our conversation.
