September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month - making this conversation especially timely! It’s our first encore episode! For back-to-school season, we’re re-airing an episode from last year where Jana Mastrogiovanni (Student Education program manager) joins the podcast to share more about our online educational platform. For National Cancer Survivors Month, we’re spotlighting another amazing survivorship program - the LIVESTRONG® program at the YMCA. Mary Jo Kester, with the YMCA of the Inland Northwest, shares what inspired her to first get involved with the program, how groups at the Y gave her strength to get through her own breast cancer diagnosis, how to join, the power of community in healing, and stories of individuals who have gone through the program. We’re kicking off National Cancer Survivors Month with an impactful episode and a great way for YOU to get involved! Lauren is joined by Tami Nesting who is an acute lymphoblastic leukemia survivor, and Sara Rose Hansen who is the NMDP (formerly Be the Match) member recruitment coordinator for the northwest U.S. Tami shares what her experience was like getting a bone marrow transplant and how truly life-saving these donations are. Sara Rose shares more about NMDP, what the donation process is like, how to submit a sample, and what to expect if you receive that life-changing call that you’re a match! We are covering the many nuances to caregiving - particularly within the context of a partnership or marriage. In this episode, Lauren is joined by Sabrina Ortolano, who has been a caregiver to her wife, Cyndi for the past 10 years. Cyndi was diagnosed with a rare form of Medulloblastoma in 2014, completely shifting their world and altering their relationship. April is Testicular Cancer Awareness Month! In this episode, Lauren is joined by Connor O’Leary, Chief Mission Officer at the Testicular Cancer Foundation. Have you ever heard of naturopathic medicine? In this episode, Lauren has the opportunity to chat with Dr. Suzanne McMurry, ND, FABNO, who is a Naturopathic Doctor and Integrative Oncology Specialist based in Washington State (www.naturopathiccancertreatment.com). She shares a bit about the history of naturopathy, what inspired her to specialize in this line of work, and how naturopathic medicine can be integrated into a treatment plan. Dr. McMurry then breaks down (and debunks) some commonly held nutrition misconceptions and fads, foods/chemicals to avoid, how to create a nutritionally balanced meal, daily recommended amounts for each macronutrient and the importance of low glycemic foods for balancing energy levels. November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month! Lauren starts off the episode by talking about lung cancer rates, the leading risk factor (we’re looking at you, tobacco products…), the importance of screening, and how to find out if you’re eligible for a low-dose CT scan. Lauren is then joined by Cancer Pathways’ intern and UW public health student, Laura, to chat about why people use these products. They talk about how nicotine is highly addictive –impacting the brain and body, the long-term health effects of tobacco use, what makes e-cigarettes and vaping harmful, the toxic marketing practices of Big Tobacco, why it’s so hard to quit, and how we use models and frameworks to understand different health behaviors - like tobacco use.

One partnership is with the Community Cancer Fund, whose mission is to fundraise for organizations and nonprofits that serve the cancer patient community in the Inland Northwest. For this year's Cancer Unwrapped essay writing contest, we received submissions from all 50 states, over 900 high schools, and got a total of 1,112 essays! The winners came from 19 states, with 13 writing about a loved one’s diagnosis and 7 writing about their own personal diagnosis. For this episode, Lauren got to share a conversation with one of the winners, Bree. Bree talks about her grief experience, how the five stages of grief are more like ‘a tornado’, connecting with her mom in her final year, and the solidarity she’s found with other children who have lost a parent to cancer. She then reads her essay ‘Enter the Tornado’ for listeners to hear (minute 13:30). Bree is such an amazing and inspiring person – this episode is a must listen!

World AIDS Day takes place each year on December 1st to unite people in the fight against HIV, show support for people living with HIV and AIDS, and to commemorate those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses. In this episode, Lauren clarifies the difference between HIV and AIDS and discusses a few common misconceptions about the condition that can lead to stigma. Lauren is then joined by Glenn Rockowitz to discuss the organization he started to bring comedy and humor into the homes of people diagnosed with AIDS and cancer in the ‘90’s. November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month and tobacco use is the leading cause of lung cancer and lung cancer deaths. Cancer Pathways created Project C.H.A.M.P to understand and assess knowledge and awareness about HPV and the HPV vaccine in rural communities in Washington State. In our second September episode, Lauren talks to Roger Moore all about hypnosis and how it can be used as a tool for healing our mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Roger shares what hypnosis is and what it is not, how it can be used by people who are living with cancer (or other chronic conditions) to restructure and reshape negative self-talk, and combat feelings of anxiety, depression, and pain.
