I lived in Master Hugh's family about seven years. During this time, I succeeded in learning to read and write. In accomplishing this, I was compelled to resort to various stratagems....

My new mistress proved to be all she appeared when I first met her at the door,—a woman of the kindest heart and finest feelings. She had never had a slave under her control previously to myself, and prior to her marriage she had been dependent upon her own industry for a living. She was by trade a weaver; and by constant application to her business, she had been in a good degree preserved from the blighting and dehumanizing effects of slavery. I was utterly astonished at her goodness. I ....

Fellow-Citizens—Pardon me, and allow me to ask, why am I called upon to speak here to-day? What have I, or those I represent, to do with your national independence? Are the great principles of political freedom and of natural justice, embodied in that Declaration of Independence, extended to us? and am I, therefore, called upon to bring our humble offering to the national altar, and to confess the benefits, and express devout gratitude for the blessings, resulting from your independence to us?

"As to my own treatment while I lived on Colonel Lloyd's plantation, it was very similar to that of the other slave children. I was not old enough to work in the field, and there being little else than field work to do, I had a great deal of leisure time. The most I had to do was to drive up the cows at evening, keep the fowls out of the garden,...READ MORE: https://searchblackandeducation.com/stories/2019/11/7/chapter-5-narrative-of-the-life-of-frederick-douglass

Mr. Hopkins remained but a short time in the office of overseer. Why his career was so short, I do not know, but suppose he lacked the necessary severity to suit Colonel Lloyd. Mr. Hopkins was succeeded by Mr. Austin Gore, a man possessing, in an eminent degree, all those traits of character indispensable to what is called a first-rate overseer. Mr. Gore had served Colonel Lloyd, in the capacity of overseer, upon one of the out-farms, and had shown himself worthy of the high station of overseer upon the home or Great House Farm.
Mr. Gore was proud, ambitious, and persevering. He was artful, cruel, and obdurate. He was just the man for such a place,....READ MORE BELOW

NOTE: Colonel Lloyd was from one of the richest families in Maryland, he was a former governor of the state of Maryland and held offices in the United State Congress (U.S. Representative and U.S. Senator). Think of this as you read through or listen to Frederick Douglass' experiences on this man's land.
Colonel Lloyd kept a large and finely cultivated garden, which afforded almost constant employment for four men, besides the chief gardener, (Mr. M'Durmond.) This garden was probably the greatest attraction of the place. During the summer months, people came from far and near—from Baltimore, Easton, and Annapolis—to see it. It abounded in fruits of almost every description, from the hardy apple of the north to the delicate orange of the south. This garden was not the least source of trouble on the plantation. Its excellent fruit was quite a temptation to the hungry swarms of boys....READ MORE BELOW:

My master's family consisted of two sons, Andrew and Richard; one daughter, Lucretia, and her husband, Captain Thomas Auld. They lived in one house, upon the home plantation of Colonel Edward Lloyd. My master was Colonel Lloyd's clerk and superintendent. He was what might be called the overseer of the overseers. I spent two years of childhood on this plantation in my old master's family. It was here that I witnessed the bloody transaction recorded in the first chapter; and as I received my first...

I was born in Tuckahoe, near Hillsborough, and about twelve miles from Easton, in Talbot county, Maryland. I have no accurate knowledge of my age, never having seen any authentic record containing it. By far the larger part of the slaves know as little of their ages as horses know of theirs, and it is the wish of most masters within my knowledge to keep their slaves thus ignorant. I do not remember to have ever met a slave who could tell of his birthday. They seldom come nearer to it than planting-time, harvest-time, cherry-time, spring-time, or fall-time. A want of information concerning my own was a source of unhappiness to me even during childhood. The white children could tell their ages. I could not tell why I ought to be deprived of the same privilege. I was not allowed to make any inquiries of my master concerning it.

If there were a few words that could sum up Mrs. Fanny Jackson-Coppin they would be, “excellence in education.” Mrs. Jackson-Coppin spent decades as an educator and as a principal, at a time when women, especially women of color, weren’t given many opportunities to lead. She stepped into leadership roles and was rarely challenged due to the remarkable commitment and professionalism she displayed. Fanny Jackson-Coppin had a philosophy about education that encouraged young people not to wait for someone to do things for them,
“I am always sorry to hear that such and such a person is going to school to be educated. This is a great mistake. If the person is to get the benefit of what we call education, he must educate himself, under the direction of the teacher.” Read more at:

A Massacre and American Uprising: Wilmington, NC 1898
The day after the election in Wilmington, a mass meeting was called on November 9, 1898. Some of the same people, who had planned an overthrow of the local government were in the meeting. You see, sometime later it was uncovered that local men planned, all along, to overthrow the city’s government and to rid the city of Republican and Negro rule. So many of the events that took place were both planned and spontaneous—which fed right into the hands of those who actively wanted to overthrow the government. The meeting on November 9th would be the next step in the events that unfolded. READ MORE: https://searchblackandeducation.com/stories/2020/11/7/a-massacre-and-american-uprising-wilmington-nc-part-3

Once the supporters of white supremacy in New Hanover County (Wilmington, NC) gained the desired victories on election day, November 8, 1898, they were not finished. There were other offices in the city they wanted such as mayor of the city, chief of police and aldermen—even though those positions were not on the ballot or up for change. In 1898 many African-American voters were, of course, Republican at that time, as this was the party of Lincoln—the party that supported the Emancipation Proclamation and needed reforms during Reconstruction. All voters were, of course male, and most white conservatives in the South were in the Democratic Party. The idea of white supremacy also rested,...read more HERE: https://searchblackandeducation.com/stories/2020/10/29/a-massacre-and-american-uprising-wilmington-nc-1898

Ida B. Wells: In the creation of this healthier public sentiment, the Afro-American can do for himself what no one else can do for him. The world looks on with wonder that we have conceded so much and remain law-abiding under such great outrage and provocation.
To Northern capital and Afro-American labor the South owes its rehabilitation. If labor is withdrawn capital will.... https://searchblackandeducation.com/stories/2020/10/2/self-help-her-words-of-wisdom

Sally was only fourteen. Her mother, Elizabeth Hemings, was the daughter of a Captain of an English trading vessel and an enslaved woman from Africa. Elizabeth, like her daughter Sally would be, was forced to be a sex slave, literally, by the man who owned her and her children, John Wayles. She had at least twelve children, many of whom, including herself, were given to Thomas Jefferson and his wife, Martha, when John Wayles died. Martha, Thomas Jefferson’s wife, was the daughter of John Wayles and it was her father who took Elizabeth Hemings as his personal sex slave. This means that Sally Hemings and Martha Jefferson were sisters.

I suppose it is a truth too well attested to you, to need a proof here, that we are a race of Beings who have long laboured under the abuse and censure of the world, that we have long been looked upon with an eye of contempt, and that we have long been considered rather as brutish than human, and Scarcely capable of mental endowments.
Sir I hope I may Safely admit, in consequence of that report which hath reached me, that you are a man far less inflexible in Sentiments of this nature, than many others, that you are measurably friendly and well disposed toward us, and that you are willing and ready to Lend your aid and assistance to our relief from those many distresses and numerous calamities to which we are reduced.

Biddy Mason was born, enslaved, in Hancock, Georgia in 1818. Her owner, Robert Smith, later moved to Mississippi where he became acquainted with the Mormon religion. The mid-1800s were a tumultuous time in American politics and 1850 was an important year, in many ways.
Unbeknownst to Biddy Mason, decisions being made about California and Utah were about to have a significant impact on her life.

Percy Julian was born on April 11, 1899 in Montgomery, Alabama.
His parents sent him to school in Montgomery, AL, but there were no educational opportunities for black people beyond a certain grade in Montgomery. While in school, however, Percy was encouraged to go to DePauw University (which is in Greencastle, Indiana) to continue his studies.
