This is a podcast dedicated to walking through the books of the Bible that many have called boring, books like Leviticus, Numbers, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, the Psalms and many more! These books often get overlooked when pastors are searching for a new Sermon idea or topic and so we've developed this podcast to help pastors and students alike learn more about these incredibly rich texts that frankly don't have the page turning appeal we are used to reading. Join Noah Randolph, teaching pastor at Wayfarers Christian Church, as he explores these books one chapter at a time.
This week Noah discusses the dialogical (not didactical) aspects to Psalm 14. He works through the important message that God says back to this fool and how believing in God mattered to specifically for the Israelites living in poverty. Join Noah on this episode as we listen to what the Psalmist has to say about humans and belief in God.
This episode Noah breaks down Psalm 13 expressing some of his personal journey with this psalm as well as teaching on the importance of memory and the past as a way towards healing. He discusses the ways that the psalmist sees the Lord forgetting him and how the psalmist still remembers how God has been faithful as way to endure his sufferings. This episode we dive into a psalm which continues onward into Psalm 10. These two psalms were originally one psalm and only in the middle ages where they split apart. Today, Noah talks about the first section of this psalm, where a psalmist prays to God for justice on his enemies. Noah explains one of the hardest to translate words in the Hebrew Bible as we dive into Psalm 6. This episode we consider how to pray to God for mercy and forgiveness. This is the first psalm where the psalmist asks God for forgiveness and is an important song for seeing the relationship between God and humanity.

This is the final episode in the book of Romans! Thanks so much for your interest in this series and I hope it has opened up some new ways to read the book of Romans! Paul finishes this letter off with some well wishes to the various people in Roman as well as calling them to one final message of unity.
This is the final episode in our series through Deuteronomy! If you've made it this far, well done! Thank you so much for your time. Noah finishes up with some final thoughts on this chapter, explaining the significance of the ending as well as offering some personal anecdotes. Please enjoy this final chapter in the book of Deuteronomy.
Paul finishes his letter in a flourish of final thoughts on the unity he hopes the church of Rome accomplishes. He reminds them of the acceptance that Jesus has offered them and encourages them to have that same acceptance for each other. He then concludes with his plans for visiting the church before going to Spain, and offers them a blessing.
This episode Moses delivers his final blessing(s) on the people of Israel. This episode is a comparison between Moses's blessing and Jacob's blessing back in Genesis 49 so have your Bible handle for some flipping! This is the penultimate episode for the series in Deuteronomy, the last section focused on the words of Moses. We hope you enjoy!

This episode was a very hard one to make. Noah spends a lot of time on this first section of the passage because it has a very dark history with how the church has utilized it over the years. Noah shows the lines Paul draws and how he walks within those lines in this passage. Hopefully, it can offer a starting point to wrestle with some of these themes.
This episode Noah breaks down how Moses and Joshua finalize the Lord's commands for the people. Noah talks about the importance God places on Joshua and how the people of Israel are named from the very beginning to be a people that will disobey God and his covenant.
This episode Noah walks through the life of Christian as Paul hopes and encourages the Roman church to live out. Much of this episode focuses on Paul's hope for both Gentile and Jewish groups to get along and unite in the community. He focuses on pride and conceit along with sacrifice and humility. He finishes this section by showing how Paul sees the powerful goal of Christians is to become co-heirs with Christ. This episode we continue through laws that govern human society for ancient Israel. Laws about marriage, justice, cheating with money, paying your oxen for his work, all show up in this episode. The focus of this chapter is a bit more haphazard as the laws in these later chapters are more unified generally than specifically. However, there is still great content and loads to meditate on in this episode with each of these laws and as always we hope this brings you some peace.

This episode Noah unpacks the complicated relationship Paul sees between sin and the law. Death to the law brings about freedom from sin. And going back into sin brings slavery and death. This chapter Paul speaks to the power of sin in our lives. He talks about a part of ourselves called the "flesh" or sarx in the Greek, which causes the beginnings of our sin in the world. This is the power of sin actualized in our bodies and becomes the force of desire that creates cravings and lusts for things. He explains how commands given by the law only trigger this flesh to sin all the more and how the true way to freedom is in Christ.

This episode Noah works through chapter six and the flowing water symbolism of baptism which unites both a Jew and a Gentile under Jesus. He works through how Paul isn't arguing for grace that's cheap. You have to die to sin even as Jesus died to sin. The Romans being baptized was the start of that unification and they must continue it with the resurrection of life within their own hearts which leads to choosing the way of Jesus over the way of sin. This is a continuation of laws begun in chapter twenty one where Moses is giving several laws that are meant to handle more negative scenarios. This can be a triggering section of the book of Deuteronomy but it's also a section meant to handle a culture and time different than our own. This episode in the book of Romans we are looking at the story of Abraham in the Old Testament. Paul uses the story of Abraham to bring out the nature of the Jewish Old Testament faith in God's promise for the people of Israel. He then shows how that same faith is what Abraham had as an uncircumcised nomad. This then becomes his powerful conclusion: that the Gentile believers in Rome have that same faith when they believe in Jesus and thus they can call Abraham father as much as a Jew can call Abraham father. This means that the law from Genesis to Deuteronomy is fulfilled and not nullified because it's the faith of Abraham that becomes the faith of a Gentile and a Jew when they both believe in Jesus.
This episode we dive into a section of laws that deal with concessions that God has for the people living in the land of Canaan. He offers protections against people that could be mistreated when sins occurs in the land providing a helpful framework for understanding how God's love for all people works. This can be a harder section of the book to get through but it can still be life giving and as we work through these chapters the important thing to remember is how Jesus himself interpreted this section of Deuteronomy in a chapter soon to come! We'll save that reference for that chapter but we hope this episode brings you closer to God and Jesus as you continue to study his word.
In chapter three Paul addresses a few objections he foresees his listeners having. He continues his point from chapter two that being a Jew ultimately has no significance to the power of sin in the world, while also maintaining that being a Jew has a special significance to the honor and glory of God as well as a role in the upholding and treasuring of God's words. The story of Israel shows the faithfulness of God in a beautiful and powerful way.
Paul then works through how everyone has been overcome by sin, both Gentile and Jew, and the world needs the faithfulness of God to answer being enslaved to sin. He finishes this section by focusing on the redemption of Jesus and how both Gentiles and Jews have a new law of faith in their lives that has freed them from sin.
Paul then finishes the chapter by saying, even though both Gentile and Jew are unified under this new law of faith, that doesn't mean that the Old Testament law is nullified. In chapter four he will then discuss why. Stay tuned to find out why Paul sees the new law of faith as harmonious with the Old Testament law.
This episode Noah breaks down the hidden wisdom underneath this chapter's laws on war with other neighboring nations. This chapter has both hard and gentle policies that both allow us to wonder at the Old Testament's foresight and also challenge our own understandings of morality. The teachings in this chapter are part of the larger command for the Israelites to dispossess the areas surrounding the region of Canaan and how they were to handle treating other nations aside from the six nations mentioned in this passage. As always when talking about these sections of scripture it can be difficult but we really believe there is some hope and teaching in them still to be absorbed and processed. We hope this episode does so for you and that your day is filled with a peace from God.
This episode we dive into Paul's thoughts on the nature of the Jewish people's history. Paul saw how equally wicked his own people's history was in comparison to that of paganism and believed the hearts of the pagans could be closer to God than his own people. He calls attention to his own people's sins and shows that no one should feel they deserve special treatment from God. All have sinned, as he will say in the next chapter. This brings us to the precipice of a new thought that he will expound on more in chapter three. "What was the point of Israel then?" If Israel's goal was to save the rest of the world through the purifying of themselves, and becoming a light to the nations, but Jesus then became that for both them and the nations, what value do they still hold? Stay tuned for the next week's episode where Paul starts with just that question.
This episode we tackle more laws from the Old Testament story. This is a new section of the book of Deuteronomy where Moses turns to laws that govern the practices of people in relationship with other people. This will be a section that carries into chapter 25 of this book so come along for the next month and a half as we dive into the laws that governed ancient Israelite society!
Today we will be discussing cities of refuge, boundary markers, and witnesses at court cases.
Surprise! The Boring Bible Podcast will be walking through two books of the Bible to finish out season 2! These episodes on Romans will be labeled bonus episodes and will release every Friday whereas our normal episodes on Deuteronomy will release on Monday. The intent is to get you more of the Bible if you so desire but also you can still listen to the Deuteronomy episodes without fear of losing your place in the series! These episodes are meant to get a deep look into the heart of Paul in one of his most famous works. We hope this episode provides the context for the series as we journey through the book. This was a longer episode due to the nature of the setup as well as the nature of the content but it's well worth the listen. Not all the episodes will be this long but Noah is also taking his time to do each verse justice in this series as we work through Paul's rich text.

Romans was not written to show how to save people from death and damnation, but instead written to unify a church struggling between a Jewish gospel and a Gentile gospel.
Romans offers us a look at how important unity is to the gospel of Jesus
Paul's heart is for both Jew and Gentile to see how similar they really are to one another
How did God ask Moses's own family to live? Why did God seem to make their lives harder than the rest of the people? What is a way that we can live like the priests of Israel today? Noah works through this section as well as a section on occult practices in the Canaanite religious and the reasoning behind God's strict rules on the people listening to His own prophets. This episode works through personal devotion to God and security in him which we hope is beneficial to your life!

This episode we dive into the wonders of how kind the Old Testament law code was to those less fortunate. Noah speaks on the year of Jubilee and also the the freedom of debts and slaves every seven years. The fantastic way of living is sadly something that we never got to see lived out but it's a call in all our lives to take the wisdom of these passages and apply them in our own contexts. Be a year of Jubliee to others in whatever they are suffering from and give them the rest and release they need.

He's been a member of Wayfarers Church for awhile and has generously offered his time to talk about this chapter in the book of Deuteronomy. A few themes that make their way into John happen in this chapter as well as some call backs to the book of Exodus. As a reference note, Noah couldn't find the reference for a story in Exodus where the Israelite Elders and Moses have a meal with God during this recording, but the reference is in Exodus chapter 24. The banquet and meal is less emphasized but it's still a part of the sacrificial system that occurs in that chapter.

As an editors aside, Noah at one point discusses the alliance between Egypt and Cush, however he mistakenly uses the name Ethiopia when he meant to use the word Egypt. This can get a little confusing but he only makes the mistake twice before returning to the word Egypt but we figured it was best to point it out so you don't get too confused.

In this Episode Noah continues to work through a really rich passage of narrative and prophecy entangled with one another. He talks about the theme of water in the bible and the difference between good water and bad water. Also included in the episode is a brief explanation of Hebrew writing and how it can sometimes be confusing how the Hebrew writers communicated, as well as a portion dedicated to glory and heaviness and how those words are more similar in Hebrew than they are in English.

Today we return to the historical context surrounding Isaiah's world and Noah explains the different nations that surrounded the people of Judah: Aram, Israel, and Assyria. Have you ever been a part of a service that used Isaiah 6 to call you to do God's will? Did you ever hear a pastor inspire you with the words of Isaiah 6? Today Noah talks about the calling that God put on Isaiah and how it sometimes gets misrepresented in churches.
Noah also explains more on the concepts of fire and trees in Isaiah which he first began in Isaiah 4. He talks about how the purifying fire makes its way throughout the entire book of Isaiah as well as the idea of heaven and earth overlapping at the temple in Jerusalem.

This is a wonderful example of an Old Testament passage getting used throughout the New Testament and the reasons Jesus spoke in the ways he did. A lot of the focus of this episode is on the relationship between Jesus and Isaiah 5 so if you have a Bible and are reading along, prepare to do some flipping around.
This episode is also filled with a lot of imagery that needs a lot of explanation, particularly the concept of a vineyard and how it works its way throughout the Old Testament. The book of Song of Solomon makes an appearance as well as Ahab and Jezebel concerning Naboth's VIneyard in 1 Kings 21.

After last week's horror and judgement, this chapter is a refreshing turn. Isaiah once again turns to peace and renewal in his traditional poetic form. Noah breaks down a lot of these images and how these ideas make their way throughout Isaiah and the rest of the Bible. One of the most prominent themes to pay attention to is the branch of the Lord and how that represents a good king and nation. Psalm 1 is a great example of how trees and humans are more similar than one might think. Noah breaks down how that image works in this chapter.
Noah also walks through the idea of mercy on the remnant of Israel and how Isaiah uses the image of fire to represent the journey of Israel from wickedness to purity. It's helpful to keep track of these images so that as we continue through the book you can call them back up for reference.
Isaiah 3 is a vivid and horrific chapter filled with poetic descriptions of God's coming judgement. It is not a chapter to go into lightly. But it's also a great window into the cultural lives of the people living in Jerusalem at the time. A lot of specific reports about the character of the people in Jerusalem are mentioned and we get to read about how far these people have swerved from their own traditions and laws.
It is also important to note that here we find a unique demonstration in a religious text. This is a Jewish critique on its own religious practices, exposing the flaws and the double talk that these people were living out. And it goes without saying that the honesty in Isaiah 3 is very refreshing compared to religious and party alliances where nothing negative can be said against one's own community. Although it is also worth mentioning that Isaiah and his message were never loved till long after he died. Still, the fact that these words survived in a climate that was so aggressively hostile to them, shows how powerful and poetic these words really are.
Isaiah 2 is a short description of the turning that we'll experience in this book. While Isaiah 1 starts with the harsh disappointment that God has for the people of Judah, Isaiah 2 is a hopeful message of eventual reunion and reconciliation. These chapters are a mini table of contents for the rest of the book of Isaiah and it is helpful to keep these first two chapters in mind as we continue forward throughout the rest of the book.
Noah’s edit: I imply in this episode that Mt. Zion is the highest mountain in Jerusalem. In actuality, it’s one of the smaller mountains with the west mountain being far higher. Confusingly this West mountain is sometimes referred to as Mt. Zion today, but the East mountain is the place where the city of David rested.
Join us on this first episode where Noah begins our journey through the book of Isaiah. This book is a large book, clocking in at sixty-six chapters spanning the lifetime of four kings in Judah and Jerusalem. The wider scholarly consensus is that this book composes two primary authors, one being Isaiah himself, spanning chapters 1-39, and a second author, spanning chapters 40-66 (some even argue for a third author for chapters 55-66!). This second (and third) author is thought to be a scribe and follower of Isaiah, and witnessed many of Isaiah's earlier prophecies come true.
We'll unpack that more once we get to chapter 40 but for now, just know this book can have a bit of a back and forth style between mercy and judgement with the first 39 chapters primarily concerned with judgement and chapters 40-66 primarily concerned with mercy. But as you'll hear, even in judgement chapters God is still merciful, and that is one of the beautiful truths that you'll learn in the book of Isaiah.
Chapter 1 opens with the heart of God revealed for his people and Noah walks us through some of the historical setting that Isaiah is countering with a few thoughts of his own to finish.
