In 2021, after Vertical Sleeve Gastric surgery (VSG), Jovanna (a co-founder of BH&SC) started to experience hair loss and dry, itchy skin a few weeks after her VSG. She found that no products she tried were able to stop her hair loss and relieve her severe dry, itchy skin and her post-op vitamins were extremely difficult to swallow and upset her stomach. Through research with Lynn (a co-founder of BH&SC), a Navy Veteran and Registered Nurse with 20+ years of experience in healthcare, they discovered that the symptoms Jovanna experienced are extremely common after weight loss surgery (WLS) and for people with other health issues that affect their protein metabolism. Eventually, Jovanna expressed her frustration to a family member who recommended use of essential oils to fight skin irritation and promote healthy hair growth. Because of the positive results she experienced using various essential oils, Jovanna and Lynn understood that use of essential oils could benefit others who were preparing for or had experienced WLS. It was their desire to help others and serve this specific community that inspired them to create Bariatric Hair & Skin Care. Our goal at Bariatric Hair & Skin Care is to provide our clients with high quality, eco- friendly, effective products and to provide a supportive forum for our clients to share information and resources related to successfully navigating side effects of WLS.

People ask me if I did research before having bariatric surgery. I did not. Listening to stories of other people's journey didn't seem like a good idea to me. So, I took the advice of my doctor about which surgery I should have and kept going. When it comes to making a decision about having weight loss surgery or not no amount of research will help you. You have two choices. Make the choice that's best for you.

This is the final part of my conversation with Amber Boyd, licensed therapist about Bariatric mindset.

___

Amber Boyd is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, practicing since 2011, supporting clients who are battling issues of anxiety, depression, work/life balance, setting and maintaining boundaries, and identifying multigenerational layers of trauma. After having VSG bariatric surgery on June 17th, 2021, she shifted her work to also support bariatric patients as she noticed a disparity in support around mental, emotional, social, and environmental well-being. Amber created a journal/workbook: "Preparing For Your Bariatric Journey" (available on Amazon) and a 5-Week 1:1 Program to support pre-op bariatric patients with the biopsychosocial aspect of their well-being to prepare for surgery (also entitled Preparing For Your Bariatric Journey 1:1 Experience). Amber is also a podcast host (Moments of Authenticity) and it is available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Google Podcasts!

How comfortable are you naked? I'm not comfortable. I've come to the realization that just like I wasn't comfortable being in the nude prior to bariatric surgery, i'm even more uncomfortable after WLS. How do you accept where you are now without judging yourself.

In this episode, I'm playing my raw reaction to the news from my pulmonologist after being told I had to stay on the CPAP machine for another year. I finally convince him to see me in 6 months but there's not guarantee that I'll be able to get off this machine. I posted my video on TikTok and my bari fam was so supportive and encouraging and they really helped me process this news.

In the episode Zipporah talks about how difficult it can be just to get up and get started. Sometime overthinking prevents this so you have to learn to just put your feet on the floor without thinking and start moving.

It didn't dawn on me that a lot of people who had bariatric surgery struggle with their mental health. Depression, anxiety and binge eating disorder are the biggest factors. That's why building a bariatric community is so important to me. Looking good, being healthy and mental health are all important for long term success.

My dad died when I was 5 month's pregnant with my first child. At my father's funeral, I stood in front of hundreds of people and shared stories of my 6'4, 300 plus pounds father that laid lifeless in the casket next to me. He never met any of my children. They never got to see his face or experience him as pop-pop. They only know of him through stories I share with them. My dad took 32 years to die. It was a slow and painful death that I wouldn't wish on my worse enemy.

The money we wasted trying to adjust to our almost 800 pounds combined bodies was very annoying. We knew we were big but nothing clicked to make us say, "okay today's the day when we're going to get up." Instead, we just kept making adjustments to accommodate our fatness.
