Throughout this series, we’ve strived to shine a light on critical aspects of the ongoing quest for greater accessibility and inclusion, for all. We’ve done so by featuring the insights and experiences of some truly incredible guests. From internationally recognized disability rights advocate Judith Heumann’s historical perspective of the movement’s hardscrabble beginnings launching demonstration after demonstration in the streets to civil rights attorney Arlene Mayerson’s relentless struggle to ensure equality across the web—we’ve confronted the many challenges head-on, and hopefully, have helped inspire listeners along the way.

In this episode, The InclusionHub Podcast’s host and Accessibility Evangelist at leading accessibility testing platform Fable, Sam Proulx, continues this important conversation by revisiting several core themes of the series, along with vital insights from past guests, to look ahead to what the future may hold for digital accessibility and inclusion, for all.

In this extraordinary episode of The InclusionHub Podcast, host Sam Proulx resets the table, so to speak, returning to several critical yet rarely articulated insights shared by guests of our inaugural drop, and re-evaluating where we are as a society in the collective quest toward true digital accessibility and inclusion, for all.

Among those: that the web is broken—hijacked by powerful corporate interests, marred by sheer carelessness, and now a tortured victim of what Sam describes as “flat-out greed.” All this has created a lucrative cottage industry that’s most recently enriching itself off an ongoing mass scramble by businesses to comply with critical laws passed to help rectify such disparities.

Listeners have heard from this episode’s incredible guests before—in our very first drop “Accessibility by Default.” Expanding their discussion about the history and current state of the web into the ADA, WCAG, and consequently flawed but necessary ways businesses and organizations can help improve digital accessibility and inclusivity, are Jutta Treviranus and Laura Kalbag.

When you take into account the various obstacles the disability community has had to face, it's quite remarkable what they've been able to accomplish, including in the years preceding the Americans with Disabilities Act and similar expansions of rights in other parts of the world.

One person in particular navigated this disturbingly unequal and discriminatory terrain and emerged from it as an accomplished computer programmer, father, and husband. His name is Rej Proulx and he’s Sam’s father. Both men are blind.

Sam and Rej sat down together for a raw and intimate conversation about what that experience was like for Rej. It’s the type of conversation that every child and parent hopes to share one day as the former matures and the latter is able to come to grips with a life filled with challenges, sacrifices, regrets, and accomplishments. In their household, fighting for accessibility and inclusion is a family affair.

We’re honored to bring this special conversation to you now, in October, which is recognized as National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) in the United States, and DEAM globally. Given the length of their chat, we decided to break up this episode into two parts, so look out for Part II’s release later this month.

Throughout our series, our host Sam Proulx and our many extraordinary guests have stressed this critical requirement. From Judith Heumann sharing her experiences spearheading many of the key disability rights protests of the ‘60s and ‘70s to Jennifer Keelan-Chaffins recounting her pivotal participation in the Capitol Crawl to help force the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), “Nothing About Us Without Us” has remained at their core.

In this extraordinary episode of The InclusionHub Podcast, we delve even deeper into its meaning and ongoing application in the fight for a fully accessible web. We’re honored, once again, to have truly incredible guests sharing their personal and collective experiences with us, toward this end.

In Episode 4 of The InclusionHub Podcast, you’ll hear from more luminaries about the origins of the ADA and its impact, plus how the law relates to the online world. It’s indisputable that the ADA has been instrumental in improving the physical world for people with disabilities—meaning it has worked largely as intended—but how the ADA is adapted for digital spaces is a much more difficult question to answer.

To do that, we enlisted the help of two highly knowledgeable guests: Arlene Mayerson, a civil rights lawyer, founding director of the nonprofit Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund, and one of the architects of the ADA; and Timothy Elder, principal attorney at the TRE Legal Practice, which specializes in digital accessibility litigation.

In the first two episodes of The InclusionHub Podcast, our host Sam Proulx and his extraordinary guests have taken listeners through the history of the disability rights movement, from the landmark protests of the 1960s and ‘70s to the ongoing battle for digital accessibility and inclusion being waged across the web today.

And we’ll get into much finer details about The Americans with Disabilities Act in the next episode of our series, but first we wanted to highlight the efforts and life of one of the most quintessential figures responsible for compelling the ADA’s enactment: Jennifer Keelan-Chaffins.

Born with cerebral palsy, she began her life of activism at just 6 years old, and will forever be associated with her selfless and infinitely inspiring participation in one of the disability rights movement’s most crucial demonstrations, known as The Capitol Crawl—whereby she and dozens of others abandoned their wheelchairs and walking aids and climbed the 84 steps of the U.S. Capitol to force its passage.

We hear at length from Jennifer, who remains a personal hero to Sam and countless others across the globe.

In the inaugural episode of The InclusionHub Podcast, we took you on a journey through the early days of the internet, which many people hoped would revolutionize disability rights and make it easy for people to enjoy the benefits of operating inside this burgeoning virtual world.

In this episode, we return to where it all began: the birth of the diverse, passionate, vibrant, and expansive disability rights movement. Through the eyes of one of the most famous disability and civil rights leaders in the world—Judith Heumann—you’ll learn how such basic liberties were never guaranteed, and that their expansion to those with disabilities was only achieved after people took the fight to the streets and halls of power.

Welcome to the inaugural episode of The InclusionHub Podcast.

InclusionHub launched in December 2020 with the express purpose of building an online community to help make the digital world a more accessible and inclusive place. We’re under no illusion that dramatically changing the infrastructure and design of the digital world will be easy, but we’re committed to doing our part to ensure anyone, regardless of disability or socioeconomic status, has easy access to the greater online ecosystem.

What Is The InclusionHub Podcast?

Today, on the 32nd anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) being signed into law, we’re launching The InclusionHub Podcast to help contextualize the issue of digital accessibility and advocate for a more inclusive web.

The series—with episodes released biweekly—will take you through the journey of the disability rights struggle, help people understand the enormous impact of the landmark legislation, and hopefully inspire more people to join us in the pursuit of living in a world in which accessibility is the default for any new technology, software, or web-based platform.

Throughout this podcast series, you’ll hear from luminaries from the disability rights movement and people making it their life’s work to ensure full web accessibility.

This first episode doesn’t disappoint. Guests include:

Jutta Treviranus, director of the Inclusive Design Research Center at Toronto’s OCAD University. Treviranus is a global expert on inclusive design, whose research has been used to inform everything from government policy to an international treaty on disability rights. She is quite literally one of the foremost experts on web accessibility.

Mike Hess, the founder of the nonprofit Blind Institute of Technology, which helps to advance the careers of professionals with disabilities.

Laura Kalbag, co-founder of the nonprofit Small Technology Foundation and author of the book ‘Accessibility for Everyone.’
