The first superpower is x-ray vision! We see a lot more than we appear to.

The second superpower is the ability to break through walls. People with ADHD are able to push through challenges and hurdles that come across their path with ease.

The third superpower is the ability to duplicate. We are exceptional at unexpected changes and turnarounds.

This episode is split into two parts. I recommend listening to part 1 before this episode. Part 1 This week I want you to meet Jackie, Sam, and Will. Jackie represents the silent suicide risks. She deals with cutting and a variety of other harmful coping mechanisms. She is truly an example of the iceberg analogy. Very little of the iceberg is picking up about the water, but the amount of things that Jack is struggling with on the surface would be shocking. Sam, on the other hand, has a very different approach. He’s an example of a boy that cries suicide. It was his go-to statement when he received any sort of constructive feedback or was made to look foolish in front of his classmates. But was there anything to these statements? We will discuss this further later on. Part 2 The last student is Will. Will is an example of a student with an official diagnosis of emotional disturbance. Will represents the student who has already attempted or had a thorough plan, and what life looks like for them after such an instances. The closing topic is about depression among educators. Learn 3 ways to help get out of a depression cycle. All student’s names have been changed to protect their privacy if mentioned in my podcast.

In this episode I seek to address this issue with my odd perspective.

Step #1 Present the disability in comparison to a physical disability.

Step #2 Reminding them that the world is changing.

Step #3 Reminding them that the school system at large is based on unfairness.

I would remind you that you are legally obligated to provide these accommodations. Which means enforcing these accommodations even if it means going against the will of one of your co-teachers. Tell them that they doesn't have to like it, but it's the way it is. Obviously you can say it way nicer, but don't forget your role as an advocate.

I want to start out by painting a picture. Imagine you are given a choice between a $2 candy bar and a mystery box. What would you choose?

There are a lot of things to consider. By knowing the type and the price of the candy bar, you have the benefit of knowing exactly what you're getting. But maybe this isn't your go to candy bar, and the Mystery Box provides you with a perk that the candy bar will never give you; the chance that inside this box could be absolutely anything.

- What is Gamification?

- Why the box works

- Tips on how to introduce the box to your classroom.

My life as an absolute nightmare:

- The thought process behind the monster boy.

- The thing I wanted most.

- What I was dealing with.

My Leveled Behavior System is called Lift Off! It’s what I call it to fit my class theme, which is space. It’s an amalgamation of bits and pieces of different behavior systems.

How it works:

- There are three levels, each with a different, predefined list of consequences.

- Error Codes are received for breaking predetermined expectations.

- 3 codes Before students move down a level.

- Students can move down multiple levels in one day, but they cannot move up a single level until they have a full day of earning less than three codes.

- it requires complete consistency.

Why it works:

- Kids don’t argue with consistent expectations.

- Extending the consequences to the next day helps the kids to stop and think.

- It is not subjective.
