In this spotlight, Sac State sophomore wide receiver Jared Gipson sits down with football beat writer Jack Freeman to discuss his Montana catch fiasco, TikTok's rise to fame and finding balance in his busy life.
On today’s episode, hosts Jack Freeman and Isaac Streeter speak with new member of the Sac State football team Carson Conklin on what his recruitment process was like leading up to his decision and why he chose to be a hornet.

THE GRIND: Mark Campbell’s ascent to women’s basketball head coach at Sac State
In a special audio story version of The State Hornet Spotlight, staffer Jack Freeman talks to Sac State alumnus and former Hornets wide receiver Isiah Hennie about his eventful journey to make it in the professional football world.
Hennie, who recorded 139 catches for 1,523 yards and 11 touchdowns during four seasons with the Sac State football team from 2014 to 2018, has looked to the NFL, the AAF, the CFL and the newly reformed United States Football League (USFL) for a chance to prove he can make it in the big leagues.
While he has come close to signing a contract several times, he still waits to this day for his maiden opportunity. Listen to his story here:

Quadcast has returned after a two-year absence!
On this edition, staffer Laura de la Garza Garcia, newsletter editor Odin Rasco and opinion editor Kris Hall host a special “Quadcast” edition of State Hornet Spotlight where they interview Sac State students about their experiences and thoughts on dealing with two years of life under COVID-19 restrictions.

On this episode of State Hornet Spotlight, multimedia staffer Alexis Hunt sits down with Sacramento State student Maya Coleman and asks her about her personal experiences as a woman of color in today’s society.
Coleman shares her thoughts with the audience about the struggles women of color face and how these challenges have influenced her personally. Coleman urges listeners to hold each other accountable and to have uncomfortable conversations surrounding issues of race and gender in America.

Confidential campus advocate Laura sits down with State Hornet visuals editor Dominique Williams to discuss resources for Sacramento State students who have experienced sexual violence.
Laura, whose last name is withheld to protect confidentiality, works for WEAVE (When Everyone Acts Violence Ends) which is partnered with Sac State to provide students with free support.
She defines sexual violence, intimate partner violence and affirmative consent and tells the audience how to reach out for support if students have experienced past or present sexual assault.

During our Hornet Speaker Series last month, Pulitzer Prize-winning State Hornet alumnus reporter Russ Buettner appeared on our Twitch stream Oct. 21 to discuss how to manage and find sources for hard-hitting investigative stories, find a career in the modern journalistic landscape and earn and keep an audience’s respect and attention in today’s lightning-fast media cycle.
Buettner, a collaborator on multiple New York Times stories on President Donald Trump’s finances, taxes and debts, as well as the “Abused and Used” series chronicling mistreatment of developmentally disabled people living in New York group homes, also shared various stories of his time as a political investigative reporter.

The State Hornet hosted its first ever live Twitch event last week: the Hornet Speaker Series of virtual Q&A sessions.
Wesley Lowery, a Pulitzer Prize winner, author of “They Can't Kill Us All: Ferguson, Baltimore, and a New Era in America's Racial Justice Movement” and creator of The Washington Post’s “Fatal Force” project, spoke to Sacramento State journalism students Monday, Oct. 18. Lowery spoke about the role of a journalist in today’s world, how to find and build trust with sources and what journalists can do to increase media literacy and build a relationship with their audience.
