The war in Ukraine is entering its third year, and as a result of Russian aggression, some 500 000 refugees have fled to the Czech Republic alone. Listen to the story of two of them. Eliška Prchlíková interviewed architect Anna and primary school student Anna-Maria.What brought them to the Czech Republic? What was their life like before the war? How did they experience the beginning of the Russian invasion? How did they manage to master Czech? What do they miss the most?
Poland’s economic growth accelerated rapidly after EU accession. In 2018, Polish GDP per capita was 81% higher than in 2003. The country’s economy is one of the fastest growing in the EU. In the next 15 years, it could become one of the world 20 biggest economies, being a part of the G20. It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a society in possession of democracy must be in want of a common understanding of reality. European democracies are under stress. Economic hardship, a seemingly crumbling global order and technology racing far ahead of regulation are just some of the challenges that their citizens and leaders have to face. Solutions need to be the product of wide-ranging and honest conversations, but in order to have those, the conversing parties need to see the world in a fundamentally similar way. Vladimír Handl is Research Fellow at the Institute of International Relations in Prague. He also works as a part-time lecturer at the Institute of International Studies at the Faculty of Social Studies of the Charles University, Prague. A candidate of History (1990) from Moscow State Institute of International Relations, he was a research fellow at the Institute of German Studies (University of Birmingham) in 1996–2000/2002–03, and was a visiting fellow at a number of German research institutions (Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Auswärtige Politik, Helmut Schmidt Universität der Bundeswehr in Hamburg among others). His main research interests are German foreign, security, and European policy, Czech–German relations, Czech foreign and security policy, and transition of the communist parties in Central Europe.
