Dr. Kevin Cronin is a sonographer and lecturer at University College Dublin, where he leads the MSc Ultrasound programme. In 2023, he completed his PhD at UCD, which focused on using ultrasound to assess hamstring injuries in professional rugby players with Leinster Rugby. Kevin has published widely on hamstring injury and ultrasound in leading journals, exploring topics such as hamstring muscle architecture, the reliability of ultrasound imaging techniques, and novel approaches such as semi-automated image analysis. He has worked with elite athletes across rugby, Gaelic games, athletics, and professional football. Chris is the founder of the Diabetes Football Community, a project that provides guidance, support and advice about football for people with diabetes. He was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 1999 and has a special interest in using his own experiences to help others with the condition. Despite the complexities that come with a diabetes diagnosis, Chris became a Wales Futsal International in 2016. Mr Andy Williams is a knee surgeon who has worked with many professional athletes, including Premier League football players and Premiership rugby players. He completed his medical training at King’s College Hospital in London before completing orthopaedic training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, after which he undertook a fellowship in Australia where he gained some of his first experiences in sports-related surgery. His expertise now lies in sports-related knee injuries and knee ligament issues. He undertakes approximately 100 anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructions every year. 90% of his work is with professional athletes. Professor Christa Jansevan Rensburg interviewed by Eleanor Trezise

Professor Christa Janse van Rensburg is a Consultant Rheumatologist, experienced Sports Physician and the Head of the Section Sports Medicine at the University of Pretoria where she oversees the teaching of sport and exercise medicine doctors and conducts research. Notably, she was the team doctor for the South Africa National Olympic Team to the Athens 2004 Olympics and was the medical venue officer for the Loftus Stadium in South Africa during the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2009 and FIFA World Cup in 2010. She was recently appointed the Chair of the Medical Advisory Panel for World Netball. She has investigated the effects of travelling on athletes and in 2020 published a systematic review on this topic in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. She is also a project partner and supervisor of the Drake Football Study, a project which is tracking the mental and physical health of 170 footballers over a 10-year period.

Professor Aneil Malhotra is a consultant cardiologist and an expert in sports cardiology. He is the lead cardiologist for multiple elite sports teams including Manchester City, Leeds United and Burnley. He also works with Manchester United, the England national football teams and British Cycling. He studied medicine at the University of Cambridge and has also spent time at MIT and Harvard. He completed a PhD in inherited heart diseases and sports cardiology at St George’s, University of London and is now based in Manchester undertaking a large programme of work around the athlete’s heart at Manchester University and Manchester Metropolitan University. He has over one hundred peer-reviewed publications and has co-authored and contributed to books in cardiology and medicine.

Stephen ReidSteven began his playing career at Millwall FC before a move to the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers. Other consultancy roles includes Team GB male and female Basketball at the London 2012 Olympics, British Athletics at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and many other clubs including; Real Madrid, IFK Gothenburg, Manchester United FC, Manchester City FC, Liverpool FC, Tottenham Hotspur FC, Portsmouth FC, West Bromich Albion FC, and Worcestershire County Cricket Club.

His clinical experience with both elite and amateur level athletes has led to Carl developing his own unique style of integrating osteopathy and corrective exercise rehabilitation, encompassing bio-psychosocial, biomechanical, and functional rehabilitation for patient management and re-education. His unique areas of interest are spine, hip and groin rehabilitation pre and post surgery and specifically injury prevention. Carl lectures regularly at medical conferences both nationally and internationally on the subject of sports injury management and rehabilitation, and has designed and delivers his own CPD courses on Functional integrated approaches to managing the athlete.

DR AVINASH CHANDRAN Athlete Health Through the Lifespan – Insights from Epidemiological Perspectives on Women’s Soccer Athletes Dr Chandran joined the Datalys Center in January 2020 as the Director of the NCAA Injury Surveillance Program. Prior to joining the Datalys Center, Dr. Chandran was a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he concurrently worked within the Matthew-Gfeller Sport-Related TBI Research Center, the Center for Study of Retired Athletes, and the Injury Prevention Research Center. Dr. Chandran is a quantitative Epidemiologist, and his research interests are, broadly, in athlete health over the lifespan.

Dr Dan Martin is the Consultant Performance Nutritionist for Southampton FC’s First Team. Prior to joining Southampton, he worked with Huddersfield Town FC’s First Team. He also currently works with the Haas Formula 1 Team, The Professional Jockeys Association and the English Institute of Sport. He completed both his PhD in performance nutrition and behaviour change and post-doctoral research at Liverpool John Moores University, where he's now a research supervisor for PhD students alongside his applied roles.

RACHEL DAVIS, HEAD OF MEDICAL, HARROGATE TOWN FC

Rachel Davis has a BSc Degree in Sport and Exercise Therapy and an MSc in Physiotherapy from Leeds Beckett University. She started her career in non-league football working for Wakefield FC and Harrogate Railway FC before securing a position within the Leeds United FC Academy, working with the U9-U16.

Working with a first team was always her ambition so in 2014 she applied and was successful for the first team physiotherapy role at Harrogate Town AFC, who were then in the National League North. Alongside working part time with Harrogate she worked as a Physiotherapist at Henshaws College, doing hydrotherapy and rebound therapy for students with cerebral palsy and other physical and learning disabilities.

In 2017 Town turned full time and Rachel became Head Physiotherapist and Head of Medical for the club. Harrogate got promoted to the EFL in August 2020 during the COVID-19 Pandemic and becomes the only female Head Physiotherapist in the EFL.

Dr Jonny Gordon is as an Emergency Medicine Consultant in Glasgow and is the first team doctor to the men’s Scotland national football squad. He has also been the first team doctor at Celtic FC and was the Deputy Chief Medical Officer at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. In 2007 Jonny founded the company SportPromote to provide education and equipment to health care professionals involved with emergency situations in sport.
