In this episode we generally just have chat around some of the topics being raised around National Diabetes Week in Australia next month.

Diabetes Australia wants a future where diabetes can do no harm.

People living with diabetes should be able to access the life-saving technology they need to live well.

This year Diabetes Australia is shining a light on the impact of diabetes tech and what needs to be done to improve access.

We chat about the challenges and considerations around diabetes research funding, as well as funding diabetes technology for both children and adults. We discuss both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in relation to access to CGM, and just share some of our own thoughts, as well as some of the evidence around these topics.

Listen in and feel free to contact us via our socials or email below with any comments or feedback. We are always open to other’s experiences and thoughts.

There are some key considerations for pregnancy when you have Type 1 or 2 Diabetes. In Episode 23, Jaimee talks about the importance of aiming to achieve recommendations for glucose management to reduce some possible very serious complications to Mum &/or Bub during pregnancy. As someone living with Type 1 Diabetes, Jaimee understands how it feels to be told you should not fall pregnant until you get your HbA1c down to 6.5% or less! It can feel like an unachievable and unfair target. Listen in to hear why pregnancy planning is SO important for women with T1D & T2D. Jaimee also covers other considerations around medications, supplements and screenings which should be discussed with your diabetes team.

Warning ‼️ some content may be triggering and confronting in this episode.

The essentials are covered in this podcast as Part 1, with more to come in the future.

This is not individualised advice and you should always work with your diabetes team when making adjustments to your diabetes management.

In this episode Hayley is back. We talk about the very topical subject of weight loss/Type 2 Diabetes medications such as Ozempic, Mounjaro and Saxenda. We discuss our personal thoughts on the place of these meds both within the diabetes space and around their place in weight loss for health improvements. Should they be 'saved' for those with Type 2 Diabetes only? Is it 'cheating' to take these to help with weight loss? Listen in as we share our personal thoughts. These are just our personal experiences and thoughts. We do not intend on offending anyone in any way by any of our comments, and hope this is more thought provoking with considerations for anyone out there with interest in these medications. We would absolutely love to hear other people's experiences.

In Episode 19, Hayley shares her very recent experience after going on school camp with her youngest son who has T1D. She talks about the decision-making process of whether to go as a parent, the communication side of things and planning of camp with the school, as well as navigating all the extra activities and camp menu. Some very practical tips are shared in this episode. We also talk about the challenges with children not particularly wanting a parent on their camp. We chat about how they managed the insulin pump and CGM side of things, switching back to injections for a day due to water-based activities. Hayley reflects on the emotional side of this experience, and it certainly wasn’t her first, as her eldest son also has T1D. We hope this helps parents on their journey!

This is a quick one where Jaimee talks about the impacts of alcohol for those of us living with diabetes. Planning and knowledge is key to keeping safe if consuming alcohol when you have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. This has some tips for everyone, from the young ones to those of the more mature years 😊 I touch on some of the better choices of alcohol, how to reduce risks of the very dangerous hypo’s (low blood glucose levels) when drinking, the short-term and long-term considerations, planning & why glucagon injections may not work in the case of severe hypo. Why correction doses may be dangerous for those on insulin. Tips on how often you should check your glucose levels after drinking, and for how long after? Jaimee shares a bit about her personal (and silly) moments with alcohol when she was younger with T1D. This episode is basically a summary of the NDSS fact sheet on alcohol and diabetes (link below). THIS IS NOT INDIVIDUALISED ADVICE! Please check with your healthcare team before making any decisions or management changes to your diabetes.

Living Type 1 Diabetes for over 60 years is quite the achievement. In this episode, we have been fortunate enough to have a guest on who is willing to talk to us about everything from diagnosis 62 years ago, to diabetes management over the years until 2023. Lynn shares everything from school to work to camping with diabetes, when needles had to be boiled to sterilise them, glucose was tested purely via the urine, and carb counting was not heard of. We are so grateful to Lynn for coming on and sharing her diabetes in the raw experiences.

Please get in touch if you have any kind of diabetes and would like to share. We would love to have parents or family members on too.

This is for the parents of teens (or almost teens) of Type 1. Teenage years are hard enough with Type 1 Diabetes. The last thing we want to do is make it harder for our young people. Listen in as Jaimee & Hayley (mum of 2 boys with T1D) discuss the 9 points teenagers have told us they do or don't like hearing. The Behavioural Diabetes Institute in San Diego has put together these points, straight from the mouth of teens. This was a card put together to help teens & parents survive diabetes together. it does not that there is no need to follow all of these etiquette points, just give yourself a pat on the back if you are doing any of them! Hayley is doing amazing as her eldest hit the teens between recording & publishing this episode.

Hayley & Jaimee chat about the struggles diabetes research is having in regards to funding & how stigma may be influencing the $ coming in for more research. All forms of diabetes are increasing in Australia (& probably worldwide), yet the funding for research is going down. Why? What can be done? What should the research be focusing on? A cure? Improvements in quality of life? Improved treatment options?

We started this chat after a debate during National Diabetes Week in Australia from July 9, 2023. The Great Debate Series can be found at the link below:

He shares some very raw experiences of some 'close calls', and discusses things that motivated him to get his diabetes 'on track' in those young adult years. A continuation from Episode 5 with Martine after a shock diagnosis of T1D in her early 40's, Martine shares a bit about her journey. Not without some laughs & going off on a bit of tangent about how diabetes can impact on intimacy with your partner, Jaimee & Martine talk about how carb counting & learning more about diabetes can help enhance flexibility in life. A nice short & sweet episode as we talk a little about DAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating) which is a course Martine has just started to help her with her diabetes management. The Environmental Determinants of Islet Autoimmunity (ENDIA) Study aims to find the cause(s) of type 1 diabetes to inform ways to prevent it. A long-term study with some results shared by Kelly who is the ENDIA coordinator, 10 years in. The exciting news is… the study has also received funding to keep doing the essential research around T1D and some possible environmental causes. Finding links to the causes of islet cell autoimmunity may well hold the key to treatments and prevention in the future.

Jaimee’s eldest son  has been in this study since he was in the womb. The cord blood from pregnancy was even collected. This study is one of a kind! Listen in and please rate us on your fave podcast app… and share to help this information reach more people.

Type 1 Diabetes in childhood is HARD! What happens to glycaemic control through adolescence & young adulthood? Hayley & Jaimee talk about the evidence highlighting how diabetes management can become even more challenging through the teen & young adult years.

Does that first year after diagnosis impact on the future? In this episode, we use some evidence from the research to talk about our experiences and thoughts on the challenges of T1D from diagnosis, and through the younger years. We hope sharing some research & some personal experiences helps people feel less alone, & maybe even help prepare (as much as possible) for some of the possible hurdles.

Our second GDM personal journey shared. Hayley shares her experience with a diagnosis of gestational diabetes given at around 33 weeks when bloods were taken for other reasons. Little education & even less information around why her baby had low glucose levels at delivery leaves Hayley feeling confused. Diabetes took a back seat as other health complications took priority during pregnancy. Hayley shares this as she looks back & wonders if things could have been different if she was given more information & education. Would her baby of needed supplementary formula & multiple heal pricks? She kindly shares how she didn't truly understand the importance of diabetes management in pregnancy at the time.

Diabetes in pregnancy is an area we are very passionate about in the hope of helping women to feel more empowered, less guilty, & with the opportunity to make informed decisions.

Please get in touch via our social media accounts on Facebook or Instagram, or email diabetesintheraw@gmail.com if you would be willing to share your diabetes and pregnancy story. It may be Type 1, Type 2 or Gestational Diabetes. Diabetes in the Raw is all about helping others feel less alone, more informed, and more empowered.

Please share and rate our podcast to help us reach and help others. Thank you. Jaimee & Hayley.

Jaimee (CDE) briefly explains what GDM is & why we feel it is important to talk about this. From the risks during pregnancy, to things you have some control over to reduce risks, & how the diagnosis can impact your journey. Hayley will share her personal experience in the next episode & we will talk more about the emotional & psychological side of the journey. Unfortunately, a diagnosis of GDM can result in a lot of guilt, stress and an overall negative aspect to pregnancy, impacting on the enjoyment of this precious time. To help improve how women are treated at the time of diagnosis, during pregnancy, and after pregnancy, we hope women feel comfortable to share how their experience could be improved.

Diabetes language can impact on those living with diabetes as reported in Position Statements from Diabetes Australia (links below). Language can impact on relationships when offensive language is used, intentional or not. As a healthcare professional, it can be the difference between building rapport with someone living with diabetes, or not. In this episode, Hayley & Jaimee talk about some of their experiences with this over the years. Jaimee shares some experiences as a healthcare professional, and as someone living with T1D for over 25 years. Hayley shares some of her stories around being the mother of two young boys with T1D for many years. We aim to keep it light-hearted to create awareness, aiming for progression, not perfection as Diabetes Australia also states. We put up our hands to say, we are also not perfect at this.
