The value of scrap catalytic converters has gone down because the values of rhodium and palladium have also decreased. Despite this, there is still a lot of volume available. However, some suppliers are holding onto their scrap, waiting for PGM prices to go up. This, combined with fewer available supplies and bidding wars there have been challenges for some businesses in Q4 of 2022.
Bidding Wars:
"If you are getting every deal, you are paying too much"
Bidding auctions for catalytic converters often attract a large number of bidders due to the high demand for these components. The bidding process can be competitive, and buyers need to keep track of the current bidding prices to ensure they are not outbid. Bidding auctions may also perpetuate the unequal distribution of resources in the market, with larger companies having more leverage to win auctions and secure the necessary components. This can create a cycle where smaller businesses struggle to compete, leading to a concentration of resources in the hands of a few larger companies.
Catalytic Converter Market Looking Ahead:
Looking into 2023 there is optimism for catalytic converter sales. As demand for precious metals goes up on the OEM side with automotive manufacturing the market will grow.
A lot of hybrids are entering the market that will increase the supply of catalytic converters in the upcoming years.

Spark plugs are a necessary component of the internal combustion engine, which is found in the majority of traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. Spark plugs generate an electric spark that ignites the fuel in the engine's cylinder, causing the engine to start.
If the internal combustion engine is phased out, spark plugs will most likely no longer be used in vehicles. However, it is difficult to predict how the transportation landscape will evolve in the future, and spark plugs may continue to be used in some capacity even if internal combustion engines become less common.
Diesel engines can be found in a variety of applications, ranging from personal transportation and commercial vehicles to heavy machinery and manufacturing. When purchasing diesel converters, there is an astounding range of sizes, configurations, and precious metal contents to be aware of.
Every modern diesel vehicle contains diesel oxidation catalysts. They are usually the first part to encounter the toxic gases released by the engine. The diesel oxidation catalyst's function is to convert carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide and decompose unspent fuel. Although it is the smallest unit in the catalytic converter, it is the most valuable because it contains palladium and platinum, which gives it a high recycling value.
Diesel catalytic converters do not contain the precious metal rhodium. Rhodium is the precious metal that catalyzes the reduction reaction in a three-way converter, which converts NOx into nitrogen gas and oxygen. Rhodium, however, cannot efficiently reduce NOx gases in a diesel converter due to the high oxygen content of diesel exhaust. As a result, rhodium is not present in #diesel converters.

Sandy has faced numerous market challenges over the last 30 years. One challenge is the presence of people who do not operate legally in this industry. While this is a professional industry, there are many companies that compete but do not pay taxes, overhead, or other legal business expenses.
ARA develops their own standards, ensuring that resources are available to the industry so that every business understands their responsibilities. The ARA University is an educational resource for those in our industry, making it a direct benefit to all auto recyclers. The ARA ensures that our industry's businesses operate responsibly in their communities.

Howard Nusbaum, administrator of the National Salvage Vehicle Reporting Program, discusses the steps needed to combat catalytic converter theft. From the difficulties of labeling catalytic converters to innovative labeling methods that could revolutionize the converter marketplace and reduce theft.
Millions of catalytic converters are on the road. Converters are stolen because they contain valuable precious metals such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium. They are not labeled, there is no central database, and there is little to do on the manufacturing side. To make matters worse, the laws have struggled to zero in on this issue, particularly in the B2B sector, allowing for cash payments, which are impossible to track, and lax reporting.
There is no centralized reporting database. Certain types of catalytic converters are covered by insurance. Unfortunately, most insurance companies lack an internal process for categorizing these claims in order to produce accurate data for a consensus data report. StateFarm, on the other hand, was an early adopter of this tactic. StateFarm reported that 23K claims were filed with them in 6 months. Naturally, not every State Farm customer has reported a claim, so the following is a conservative estimate. There are approximately 23,700 repair requests. This equates to $2100 per converter. The insured must also pay a $500 deductible, bringing the total to around $2,600 on average per converter.
For a full year you can estimate around 47K claims just filed with StateFarm which only accounts for 15.9% of the property casualty market. Approximately $1.5 billion in a single year, assuming other insurance companies reported comparable figures.

At the moment, we are at a heightened state of instability on the electric grid. The #flex alerts have begun, and they are charging up to 3x the current rate for their electric bill. Most Californians were asked to conserve energy during certain hours.
California intends to phase out gasoline-powered vehicles. State regulators recently approved a policy that will prohibit the sale of new gas cars in California, the country's largest auto market, by 2035. But how much can our electric grid actually handle given the current state?
According to a recent J.D. Power survey, the limited availability and dependability of charging stations is a major deterrent to purchasing electric vehicles. The government recognizes this and has set aside $7.5 billion to expand infrastructure and build more charging stations. Even with improved infrastructure, the electrical grid remains the most significant challenge.
Assuming a significant increase in the number of EVs operating by most California residents over the next 30 years, it is unclear how much the already fragile and vulnerable electric grid can withstand.
Why is there a price difference between price guides for catalytic converters? Although most companies, such as Noble6, provide sophisticated pricing solutions for scrap catalytic converters, there will be differences between each guide. There could be several reasons for this.
One reason for this is that the catalytic converter associated with a particular part number may have been sampled at a different stage of its life. For example, if a catalytic converter with over 100,000 miles is analyzed, the value will almost certainly be less than the same catalytic converter scrapped at 30,000 miles due to variations in precious metal loading. The part number will be the same from guide to guide, but the value associated with it may vary slightly.
As a buyer of these catalytic converters we are looking for the average value associated with each catalytic converter for our price guide to offer the best and most reliable pricing.

Much work remains to be done to combat catalytic converter theft. The good news is that some people are working to pass legislation that will raise awareness of the problem and, hopefully, put us on the right track to resolving it. Unfortunately, this is only the beginning of a much larger problem.
Inputting a VIN number on a catalytic converter may not deter most thieves, putting car owners at risk of thousands of dollars in repair costs. We see it as a starting point. A base plate that was difficult to remove without the proper tools would do a much better job than adding a VIN number that the thief would most likely notice after they destroyed the property.
Furthermore, it appears that the punishment is not severe enough for the vast majority of petty criminals. Under current law, theft is considered grand theft if the value of the stolen property exceeds $950 and is punishable as a misdemeanor or felony. This means that law enforcement is unlikely to investigate theft of less than $1,000, and if they do, prosecutors are likely to dismiss the case.
