The conversation moves into when it's actually worth speaking up against a bad strategy, how to know if a battle is worth fighting, and what it means to pick your moments without becoming the problem child in the room. Ben and Syya also get into the personal wins that come from standing your ground, even when you lose, and why the real goal isn't a win for you but a win that lifts everyone around you.

"I'm so busy" has become the automatic answer to "how are you doing?" But busy doing what? Ben and Syya dig into the difference between looking productive and actually moving the needle, from inside sales reps dialing the weather just to hit call quotas, to the CRM data-entry spiral that eats hours and closes zero deals.

They talk about why the metrics you choose determine the behavior you get, why copying "what Google does" isn't a strategy, and why busy work is often really a sign of weak systems and unclear priorities, not a personal failing. If your team (or you) feels constantly in motion but never ahead, this one's for you.

Every company has a mission statement. Most forget it exists five minutes after it's laminated and hung on the wall. Ben and Syya break down why values, not mission statements, are what actually run a business: how you hire, how you fire, who you serve, and what you're willing to fight for.

They dig into why Disney's culture has held up for decades, why McDonald's is losing the nostalgia that built the brand, and why "don't be evil" means nothing without action behind it. Then they turn to the harder question every company is facing right now: as AI reshapes jobs, will your organization actually live up to the values it claims, or just chase margins while pretending otherwise.

Takeaways:

  • The essential principle we have discerned is that individuals constitute the pivotal variable in both business and life.
  • People possess an innate capacity to astound us, manifesting in both commendable and less favorable manners.
  • A company's foundational value system is paramount, eclipsing the superficiality of a mission statement.
  • Organizations must prioritize the cultivation of a genuine culture that aligns with their articulated values.
  • In fostering an enduring organization, it is imperative to define our core values and adhere to them consistently.
  • Companies that neglect their foundational values risk commoditization and losing their distinctive identity in the market.

"But the fool on the hill

Sees the sun going down

And the eyes in his head

See the world spinning round" - The Beatles, "Fool On The Hill"

Ok, the meaning of the song is literally the opposite of The Peter Principle, so if you have a better song that can articulate it, we'd appreciate it!

So let's talk about why management consistently move people into roles that do not suit their strengths.

GnawOnThis:

  • What is it costing you not to train/coach your people?
  • Who are your unhappiest employees and what is causing them to be that way?
  • If you could change one process or procedure and make everyone’s lives better in your office, what would it be and why haven’t you done it?

"Workin' 9 to 5, what a way to make a livin'

Barely gettin' by, it's all takin' and no givin' "

  • Dolly Parton, "9 To 5"

Ok, so the majority of the population do not work these hours anymore and that's the point of our chat. There's talk of the Four Day Work Week as a future trend and it boils down to this: Is that a good idea in the long term?

GnawOnThis with us:

  • Can you do your job within 4 days vs. 5 days?
  • If you have the option to work on your own time as long as you finish the tasks, would you take that option?
  • What would it take for employers to convince them that a 4 day work week is better or worse for employees?

"Will we sit on our hands, do nothing about it?

Or will we leave this world better than we found it?

  • Maren Morris, "Better Than We Found it"

International competitions have an amazing way to bring people together to root for our respective home teams and for a small moment in time, differences are put aside so we can celebrate wins and commiserate painful losses. Through all this, certain groups are gracious in victory as well in defeat.

This week, Ben and Syya look at why there is a collective appreciation for how Japanese fans and the teams clean up after games without fanfare. What is it that drives people to "do the right thing" and act on behalf of the greater good. Can it happen elsewhere or is it uniquely Japanese?

Gnaw On This with us:

  • Can a culture of group integrity happen elsewhere in the world or is it uniquely Japanese?
  • How can we apply group success/failure within our own teams and companies?
  • What does it take to play hard during the game, but when it ends, shake it off?

At what point do creators cross the line from being an expert to a pundit when special interests are involved? We hear from so many experts in social media, but how many are really proven with their knowledge? Syya's stance is that too many experts are becoming unbelievable once bias is evident. Does this discredit pundits? Three questions for you to GNAW ON: Are you a pundit or an expert?  In other words are you adding value or merely noise?       How are you perceived by those you wish to influence? Have you asked them and listened without judgement? What could you talk on for an hour without notes comfortably and explain to people at any level?
