Over the past several weeks, ten older women from across Nova Scotia, Canada have been sharing their thoughts about their identities as aging people, about their histories and sense of self, and about what matters to them.

In this, our final episode, you’ll hear some parting thoughts from Anne, Marilynn, Stephanie, Jan, Eva, Zoe, Janet, Colleen, Roberta and Susan. We took some time to talk about the mentors and teachers that helped shaped their sense of who they are today. And it seemed appropriate at the end of this podcast series to think about the end of life—which feels a lot closer now than it did 50 years ago.

You might be surprised to hear that the women in this podcast are pretty chill about it all.

The big takeaway, though: It ain’t over til it’s over.

In our last episode, we started getting into older women’s encounters with Second Wave Feminism. This week we continue the conversation with a focus on power and voice—two central concerns of feminist thinking.  As aging women, the literal sound of our voices can change as we get older—producing all sorts of unexpected sounds (so called “jitters” and “shimmers”) that can be unsettling. In this episode, you’ll hear how our literal voices may merge with out figurative voices to reveal the unique power contained in the voices of older women.

In our last episode, we heard about how the older women in this podcast think about their identities—touching on issues of both age and gender. In this episode, we consider how the gender norms women were exposed to in their youth got turned upside down by Second Wave Feminism.   We also talk about how, in their old age, these women currently understand their gender--  and the ways they may still be working past some early programming.

This week, ten older women from Nova Scotia, Canada continue to explore what it means to be aging women. We talk about the language that gets used to describe the experience of getting older.  You’ll hear about how the words we choose—or may have imposed on us— can be enmeshed with ageist thinking. You’ll also get to hear about how the many limiting beliefs surrounding the process of aging contrast with the ways these older women understand the experience themselves.

Despite their predominance within the aging population, older women remain marginalized in society and in academic research. This podcast, which is part of a doctoral thesis project, is designed to challenge that tendency. The relative invisibility of older women reflects, in many ways, some pretty deeply rooted ageist and sexist thinking.

Being an older woman myself, I was inspired to speak with others like me—who’ve had a fair bit of life experience and time to think about where we’ve been and where we’re going.

In this episode, you’ll get to meet the ten older women from across Nova Scotia, Canada, who are taking part in this podcast series: Anne, Marilynn, Stephanie, Jan, Eva, Zoe, Janet, Colleen, Roberta and Susan. They range in age from their late 60s into their 80s.

Over the next five episodes, you’ll get to hear how the personal and social histories of these women continue to shape their identities as human beings, as learners, and as members of community. You’ll gain some insight into why, despite popular discourses, older women should not be assumed to be whiling away their twilight years knitting or caring for grandchildren. (Although they do that, too).

I think of this podcast as a resounding affirmation that older women want to be heard and have a lot of important things to say.
