The problem with rich is that it’s a moving target. The closer you get to reaching it, the further out of reach it gets. It just keeps moving, no matter now much you have. Yet our culture continues to tempt us to make that the goal of our lives. The normal approach to money has us always on the chase for more, for a target we can never hit, and a satisfaction we will never find. Over and over again, scripture addresses this tension head on, and gives us a better way to live, with a different goal in mind.

For many of us, this past year has felt really long, but at some point it will seem like just a short memory of life. That’s the way time works. And now, we’re looking at normal approaching, getting back to being able to fill our calendars up with all kinds of stuff. And that's where the stress and tension is found. There never seems to be enough time. The good news is that we have the power to change things, and to model a better way to use the time we've been given, as we discover joy, peace, and purpose in our time.

We're all happy 2020 has come to an end. 2021 promises a hopeful return to normal, but normal wasn't working for so many people. Normal people struggle to find the time for everything in life, normal people can't figure out where their money went, and normal relationships require little and provide less.
The truth is that God doesn't want us to be normal; God wants us to be weird, a good weird, the kinda weird that causes people to look over the fence and wonder what is going on in our lives. Instead of the disorganized mess that normal brings, God's promise is a life that brings real joy, real peace, and real purpose.

The events of January 6, 2021 left many of us shaken as we watched a violent mob of insurrectionists attack the places, systems, and norms that we value deeply as Americans. It was a scene that will go down in history as one of the ugliest moments in our history. As a follower of Jesus, we should be dismayed to see crosses and "Jesus Saves" signs amidst the chaos: profane uses of the name, beliefs, and symbols of our faith. What we saw displayed was not the way of Jesus.
But that disconnect should also be a reminder to all of us that we represent Jesus, and how we live should be point the way to Jesus. In this week's sermon, we look at the story of the Magi that followed the light of a star to Jesus, and the metaphor that star is for our lives as we share the hope of Jesus with our family, neighborhood, and world.

Have you ever tried to bargain with God? If you’ve experienced grief, which all of us have, you’ve experienced this stage of the grieving process. We shouldn’t avoid it, but is there something we can learn from it? Rather than telling people experiencing grief to ignore it, Jesus encouraged them to experience it fully. He encouraged those to embrace their grief and fully feel it, even to be blessed by it. This was a significant shift in the time of Jesus, as much as it is today and it's something that we need to embrace in this new reality we face.

When normal people go through abnormal events, they tend to act abnormally. Rather than ignore that, we need to learn from it. Instead of ignoring your emotions, particularly your anger, you need to bring it to God. You need to lay it at his feet and ask him to meet you at that moment, trusting in his mercy, grace, love. If you do, that moment will shift from a place of fear and uncertainty to a holy moment of life and healing.

People who can't seem to get suffering to line up with their understanding of God, tempt us to ignore the pain, numb it, or view it as wrong. On March 1, following our Making Change series, we announced a season of generosity called 7/30/90, a challenge to those who call Southeast home to lean into the spiritual guardrail of tithing.
Our budget is built on anticipated income. Historically, that income has not allowed us to take a serious look at the future home of Southeast.
The 7/30/90 Challenge changed all of that!
The incredible support and faithfulness of this church family has rewritten the narrative, and we’re ready to begin a new story as we journey ahead together.
During this season, tithes and offerings came in above our anticipated income. We look at every dollar giving above our budgeted need during the 7/30/90 Challenge as confirmation to dream about the permanent home of Southeast in our community.
During this worship service, we celebrated the mission and vision of Southeast and how, even in a challenging season of life and uncertainty, we’re able to dream big as a church family and our future together!

Nobody was outside the tomb, counting down to the resurrection. They were mourning death, experiencing grief, and wrestling with fear. None of them expected to find life, celebration, and hope, but as the sun began to break through the darkness, as night became day, that's exactly what they experienced. This experience led to worship and doubt. Yes, doubt. And in that doubt, a lesson for all of us.
