Armand Carr from 102.9 KBLX hosts Listen Up Bay Area every Sunday morning along with Karlos Garibay, Producers of Community Affairs Shows for the Bonneville San Francisco Cluster. Listen Up Bay Area shines a light on non-profit organizations doing good in our neighborhood.
This week, Armand sits with Oakland Parks and Recreation Director and Assistant Director, Nicolas Williams and Dana Riley. Their program and its partners work to provide best in class, relevant and equitable programs and services, while meeting the specific needs of people and communities both at the neighborhood level and regionally throughout the City of Oakland. They achieve this mission through intentional engagement and by removing the barriers that prohibit equitable opportunities for all.

Armand learns more about the Laurel district Street Fair in Oakland from Co-Director, Candi Martinez Carthen and Executive and Artistic Director with Prescott Circus Theatre, David Hunt. The Laurel Street Fair World Music Festival is an admission free, all ages community fundraiser and celebration of art, cuisine, dance and music from around the globe. It is produced by a small and dedicated team of Oakland natives and Oakland residents who love the Laurel and care about creating positive events that bring the community together over and over. Funds raised from the festival go directly back into the Laurel District community; helping to provide public art projects, graffiti and trash removal, street-scape improvements, facade improvements and to help promote the many wonderful small businesses that make the Laurel District so special.
Prescott Circus Theatre works to promote the skills and self-confidence children need to thrive on stage and in life. Each year, they engage over 200 Oakland public school students through free after-school, weekend, and summer programs in partnership with Oakland schools, teaching circus artists, and other Bay Area organizations. Their programs include circus art training combined with healing centered and youth development practices.

This week Listen Up Bay Area puts a spotlight on the Stanford Cancer Institute (SIC), whose mission is to promote health equity and eliminate cancer health disparities in the Greater Bay Area. They partner with surrounding communities to promote cancer risk reduction, investigate the underlying causes of poor outcomes, and develop solutions to address them, with a particular emphasis on reaching minority and medically under-served populations.

Armand had the pleasure of speaking with friend of KBLX and Lend-A-Hand Founder & Executive Director, Dee Johnson. Their mission is to enhance the quality of impoverished children, youth, and families by offering resources not otherwise available including educational, cultural, social, and sporting activities as well as basic needs.
Lend A Hand Foundation is celebrating its 20th Year Anniversary of the Backpack Program. The program began in 1999 providing 200 backpacks with supplies in front of the Henry Robinson Multi-Service Center at the corner of 16th & Clay to now having provided over 85,000 backpacks with supplies.

This week, Armand talks over the phone Marlies Perez Project Director for the California Medication Assisted Treatment Expansion Project. The mission of the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) is to provide Californians with access to affordable, integrated, high-quality health care, including medical, dental, mental health, substance use treatment services and long-term care. Their vision is to preserve and improve the overall health and well-being of all Californians.
The California Medication Assisted Treatment Expansion Project is investing in opioid prevention, treatment, and recovery services statewide. DHCS has a media campaign, Choose Change California, to help people seek and receive treatment for opioid misuse.

This week, Armand sits down with Chef Joshua Hernandez and Teresa Goines, Founder and CEO of Old Skool Cafe in San Francisco.
Old Skool Cafe is a faith-based, violence prevention program that provides job training, employment, and a second chance at life by way of an evening jazz restaurant run by at-risk, formerly incarcerated, and foster care youth ages 16-22.They address root causes of youth violence, hopelessness, and poverty and provide a safe and supportive environment for youth to interact with strong positive adult mentors who help them regain their footing and build work and life skills.

When a parent has a child with a disability, they have a huge learning curve regarding systems of care, child's behavior, inclusion in the community, working with their school, community providers and resources, etc. PHP is there to provide the information, tools and support to the parent so they can advocate for and build a bright life for their kids.

Joseph Simmons, Founding CEO of SPEEDCO (St. Paul Economic Empowerment Development Corporation) a non-profit organization of the Greater St. Paul Church in the vicinity of Oakland’s Uptown district came in to talk about the organization which through it’s programs and initiatives are able to address many of the needs in our community by providing food, clothing, financial literacy classes, employment development, personal empowerment, and other services to its residents.
Dr. Hollis Pierce-Jenkins, Executive Director of Super Stars Literacy came in to talk about the amazing organization making a huge difference in the Bay Area. Super Stars Literacy is an Oakland based non-profit that partners with Title 1 schools in Oakland with a goal to have under-performing children reading at grade level by 3rd grade. Our AmeriCorps members run 3 after school programs per school each which contain about 16 students.

Armand sits with Sharon Cooper, sister of the late Sandra Bland who was found dead at a Texas jail cell. Sharon talks about the mission to raise awareness about racial discrimination against African American women by the justice system. Sharon also shares with Armand about the HBO documentary that has been screened across the country to shine light on her sister's story.
Karen Hanrahan, GLIDE President and CEO came in to talk about the non-profit GLIDE, a social justice movement, social service provider and spiritual community dedicated to strengthening communities and transforming lives. Located in San Francisco’s culturally vibrant but poverty-stricken Tenderloin neighborhood, GLIDE addresses the needs of, and advocates for, the most vulnerable and marginalized individuals and families among us. Building on the 50-year legacy of Co-Founders Rev. Cecil Williams and Janice Mirikitani, GLIDE challenges inequities and stands with the poor, people of color, LGBTQ persons, and others facing oppression, isolation and stigma, while offering a holistic, integrated model of programs and services to address the complex needs of the community.

Life Goes On (LGO) is about transformation. It's a philosophy and a lifestyle. LGO teaches wellness and recovery one may face from any hardships and challenges in life through positivity, knowledge and sport focusing on spinal-cord injuries, uplifting underserved youth and senseless gun-violence prevention.
Maiya Edgerly and Gayla Newsome came in to talk about Onyx Scholars, a program that prepares inner-city students for admission to the nation's HBCUs. 93% of our student cohort are first-time generation college students that come from low-income households. We serve students from the ages 16-21 years old, but we have monthly HBCU college readiness programming that all students and families can enjoy and participate in.

Bay Area BMXers is a new, one of its kind grass roots Non-Profit organization that targets at risk kids in urban communities that might not have a chance to participate in bike programs. The youth enjoy racing BMX bikes and fun community rides in the evenings and on weekend mornings. To help support healthy family bonding and kid BMX rides with parents Bay Area BMXers has a new campaign called Flood The Streets With Bikes to get bikes for kids and go into places no one will go.
The Success Center SF (SCSF) is a non-profit corporation founded in 1983 by Superior Court Judges who saw the need to improve the educational and vocational outcomes for the youth engaged with the juvenile justice system. Since then SCSF has grown to provide comprehensive workforce development and education services to youth and adults who face multiple barriers to career development.
Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Center prepares individuals for self-change based on transforming America to become a more perfect Union. The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., Oakland – Bay Area Chapter’s (NCBW-OBAC) mission is committed to providing programs that increase the participation of African American women in economic, civic, entrepreneurial, and human service arenas of their respective communities through education, scholarship, and collaboration.
Pets In Need is an organization with a mission to advance the no-kill movement, reduce pet homelessness, and find every dog and cat a loving home. Founded in 1965 as a “Lost Animal Registry” and became an adoption based rescue in 1968.
The mission of The Darryl Reed Foundation is to impact young people throughout the nation at-risk of experiencing community violence in the inner-cities. The foundation will support Darryl Reed in fulfilling the promise he made to President Obama upon being granted an executive clemency. Mr. Reed will utilize the misguided notoriety that have followed him throughout his 28 years of incarceration to help stop the senseless destruction of lives.

Budd MacKenzie, Founder of Trust In Education came in to talk about his organization Trust in Education, a grass-roots organization, providing educational, economic and health care assistance to villages in Afghanistan.
