Have you ever considered why Jesus chose specific locations for pivotal moments in His ministry? The geographical settings of scripture aren't random—they're intentional and packed with meaning that often escapes modern readers.
In this illuminating episode, we journey to Caesarea Philippi, where Jesus posed His famous question: "Who do you say that I am?" But this wasn't just any location. Standing at the base of Mount Hermon, Jesus and His disciples were positioned at what ancient people considered the literal entrance to Hades—a dark, pagan worship site dedicated to the god Pan. It was believed to be unholy ground where fallen angels had descended according to Jewish tradition, and no devout Jew would typically venture there.
We explore the profound significance of Jesus deliberately taking His disciples to this spiritually charged location to declare "on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it." Rather than making this statement in the safety of familiar territory, Jesus walked directly to what was considered evil's front door to announce His mission and authority. This wasn't just bold—it was revolutionary, directly challenging darkness on its own turf.
The historical context transforms our understanding of familiar passages. From the controversial interpretation of Peter as "the rock" to the connection between this location and the transfiguration that followed, every detail takes on richer meaning when we understand the geography and history behind the text. Jesus wasn't afraid of spiritually dark places—He confronted them directly, demonstrating that no power could stand against Him.
Take a deeper dive with us into this fascinating intersection of geography, history, and faith. Understanding the context behind Jesus' words helps us grasp the full power of His message and mission in ways that simply reading the text cannot provide. Subscribe to our podcast and join us as we continue to uncover the hidden dimensions of scripture that bring God's Word to life.

The question reverberates through Christian history: Why would a sinless Savior need baptism? Mitchell tackles this profound theological mystery with clarity and depth in this illuminating episode of the Pure Faith Podcast.
Diving into the baptism of Jesus recorded in Matthew 3:13-17, Mitchell unpacks three compelling reasons behind this pivotal moment. First, it marked the official launch of Jesus's public ministry at age 30, when Jewish tradition allowed him to formally take on disciples as a rabbi. While Jesus had been discussing Scripture since childhood (as seen during his temple visit at age 12), this moment represented his official step into public teaching.
Second, this sacred moment created the divine stage for the Holy Spirit's descent and God's thunderous proclamation: "This is my Son, with whom I am well pleased." This heavenly endorsement announced Jesus's identity to all present—and perhaps even alerted dark forces to the Messiah's arrival, though they couldn't comprehend how his eventual death would fulfill God's redemptive plan.
Most poignantly, Jesus's baptism demonstrated his willingness to identify with sinners despite his own sinlessness. This wasn't about elevating humanity to his level but about Jesus descending to ours—the first step in his journey toward taking on our sin at Calvary. Mitchell brilliantly connects this to baptism's consistent biblical meaning of death, burial, and resurrection, tracing this pattern through Noah's flood, the Red Sea crossing, and the Jordan River.
Mitchell closes with powerful personal insights, sharing his own adult baptism story despite being baptized as an infant, and urging believers not to delay baptism until they've "cleaned up their lives." The message resonates with both new and seasoned believers: just as Jesus began his ministry with baptism, so should we begin our faith journey—not after achieving perfection, but precisely because we need the transformative power baptism represents.

Mitchell's fascinating exploration of "Bethany across the Jordan" takes listeners on a geographical detective journey through the Holy Land to uncover where Jesus' baptism truly occurred. What begins with four simple words from Scripture opens up a world of historical investigation that challenges conventional wisdom about this pivotal moment in Christian history.
By carefully analyzing the timeline in John's Gospel, Mitchell presents compelling evidence for a northern baptism site near the Sea of Galilee. The rapid succession of events—Jesus returning from temptation, gathering disciples, and attending a wedding in Cana "on the third day"—makes a southern location geographically implausible. A person simply couldn't travel 80+ miles on foot while gathering followers in such a short timespan.
The northern theory gains additional significance when connected to other key moments in Jesus' ministry. This region near Mount Hermon is where Jesus later proclaimed his identity at "the gates of Hades" in Caesarea Philippi and was transfigured before his disciples—both featuring divine declarations of Jesus as God's Son, mirroring what occurred at his baptism.
Mitchell's approach exemplifies thoughtful biblical scholarship that considers practical realities while remaining faithful to the text. He reminds us that figures like John the Baptist weren't stationary but traveled extensively in their ministry, opening up new possibilities for understanding these sacred locations.
Whether you're a dedicated Bible scholar or simply curious about historical Christianity, this episode will transform how you read familiar passages and inspire you to look beyond conventional interpretations to discover deeper meaning in Scripture.

Ever struggle with understanding Old Testament prophecies? You're not alone. In this groundbreaking episode, we unpack the historical context behind one of the Bible's most profound prophetic passages - Isaiah 52:13-53:12.
The complexity of Isaiah's writings often leaves modern readers confused, but there's a fascinating story behind his prophecies that spans nearly 200 years of ancient history. We explore how Isaiah, writing around 740 BC, accurately foretold events he would never live to see - from the Assyrian conquest of Israel's Northern Kingdom to the Babylonian exile and eventual return of the Jewish people.
What makes Isaiah particularly challenging? His poetic language, rich metaphors, and the way historical events unfold across centuries rather than days. We break down the divided kingdoms of Israel and Judea, explain the different approaches to exile taken by ancient empires, and unravel the mysterious imagery of Israel as a tree - chopped down, scorched, yet containing a holy seed that would someday sprout.
The "suffering servant" passages of Isaiah represent some of the most significant prophetic texts in the Bible, debated by scholars and treasured by believers. Are these descriptions referring to the nation of Israel, the exiled remnant, or pointing forward to the Messiah? We set the stage for our next episode where we'll examine this profound text in detail.
Whether you're a seasoned Bible student or just beginning to explore Scripture, this episode provides essential context that transforms Isaiah from a confusing collection of ancient poetry into a cohesive revelation of God's redemptive plan. Join us as we prepare to discover how ancient prophecies speak with remarkable relevance to our lives today.

Have you ever felt abandoned by God? That desperate feeling when prayers seem to hit the ceiling, when divine silence is deafening? You're not alone – and surprisingly, you're in the company of both King David and Jesus himself.
In this thought-provoking episode, we dive deep into Psalm 22, unpacking one of scripture's most raw expressions of spiritual anguish that transforms into triumphant praise. Beginning with the haunting words Jesus quoted on the cross – "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" – we explore how this ancient lament captures the universal human experience of feeling forsaken during our darkest moments.
What makes this psalm extraordinary is its dramatic pivot from despair to deliverance. We examine how Jesus intentionally referenced this psalm during crucifixion, not just expressing abandonment but invoking a text that ultimately ends in victory and worldwide worship. This wasn't coincidental – it was a divine message about the pattern of faith: genuine lament followed by genuine praise.
Whether you're currently walking through your own spiritual desert or supporting someone who is, this episode offers both comfort and challenge. God doesn't demand we hide our pain behind religious platitudes. Like David, we can pour out our honest feelings while trusting that our story, like Psalm 22, won't end in abandonment but in answered prayer and renewed praise. Subscribe, share, and join the conversation about finding hope in our most forsaken moments.

When a random encounter with my nail tech stirred memories of my sister's legacy, it was a reminder that our lives are threaded with connections that can emerge in the most unexpected moments. This episode begins with the story of how a t-shirt from a cancer fundraiser became a catalyst for an emotional conversation about the disease that affects so many. It's a blend of personal revelations and community that weaves through our discussion, offering a poignant start to a conversation that also finds room for lighter moments, like Mitchell's hilarious garlic-induced car misadventure.
Venturing back through ancient texts, we then grapple with the enigmatic Melchizedek, an extraordinary figure who appears in the narrative of Abraham. His dual role as king and priest sets a precedent that challenges traditional views and paves the way for a major theological shift. The narrative explores Melchizedek's authority and respect, drawing out the comparisons that the author of Hebrews makes with Jesus. This exploration isn't just about history; it's an invitation to see the threads that connect our past beliefs with the foundations of modern faith.
The crux of our conversation rests on the striking parallels between Jesus and Melchizedek, both of whom hold the titles of king and high priest in a lineage that defies convention. As we examine the scriptural evidence and unravel the implications of Jesus's priesthood in the order of Melchizedek, we're not just recounting facts—we're engaging in a dialogue that invites reflection on the timeless nature of faith. It's a deep dive into the heart of spiritual kingship, where ancient narratives meet contemporary belief, and where every listener is welcomed into a story that spans millennia.

Join the celebration as we kick off with a birthday bang for my nephew Zeke and dive into the day-to-day adventures at my brother Mitchell's home, where the energy defies the sugar-free menu. When the kids aren't buzzing around, we're chasing after our potty-training pup, Sir Wyatt, whose antics are as unpredictable as the weather. Between the joyful chaos of introducing the furry new member to the children and bracing for their whirlwind visit to my place, we'll exchange stories and laughs that capture the essence of family life and the unexpected joys (and trials!) of parenting and pets.
Shifting to a more reflective note, we'll unpack the profound nature of faith and its role in deepening our connection with the divine. As a father, Mitchell has come to see the parallels between the unconditional trust of a child and our spiritual journey with God. Through stories and insights, we'll consider how living a life anchored in faith is not just about seeking God's pleasure, but about building a relationship of trust and recognition of His work in our lives. We'll explore the cycle of belief, the pursuit of knowledge, and how each step we take towards understanding strengthens that sacred bond, guiding us ever closer to the divine presence that walks with us.

As we reminisce about the playful monikers from our childhood, 'Itchy' and 'Scratchy,' Mitchell and I, Michele, invite you to join us for an episode where laughter intertwines with life's deeper challenges. When we face the storm clouds of uncertainty, like Mitchell's recent health victory against cancer set against the backdrop of his military career's unpredictability, we find resilience in positivity. We're opening up about how our family deals with the mundane yet frustrating common cold and how the shifting seasons mirror our own life changes, bringing both hardships and unexpected relief.
Venture with us into the ancient times as we reflect on Enoch's extraordinary exit from this world—a tale of a man who never tasted death but instead journeyed directly into the embrace of the heavens. What does it mean to "walk with God"? Together, we ponder this enigmatic phrase, considering the power of faith that the scriptures tell us pleases the Creator. The exploration doesn't end there; we unravel the connection between faith and divinity, inspired by the Epistle to the Hebrews, and share insights that we hope will resonate with your spiritual path.
To cap off this episode, we shift our focus to the Biblical hall of faith in Hebrews 11, where flawed individuals with unshakeable trust in the divine take center stage. Here, we reveal the true essence of faith—not as blind optimism but as a firm reliance on God's promises. Drawing parallels with our own imperfections and life's unpredictable moments, we extend an invite for you to engage with us, and to keep the conversation going beyond this podcast. You know that feeling when you're setting up a massive tent for a wedding, and you can't help but recall that time you accidentally shaved your head during a deployment in Kuwait? Yeah, us too. Join us as we navigate the chaos of preparing for Olivia and Owen's upcoming nuptials while indulging in a bit of nostalgia. From our boys causing mischief at church to musing over our grandpas' hair and the impending baldness of our own kids, we've got some fun stories to share.
Ever been pulled over by the police and thought about the concepts of mercy and grace? We're taking a deep dive into these profound terms and how they intertwine in our everyday lives. Using our personal experiences with law enforcement, we're unpacking the differences and nuances between mercy, the forgiveness of wrongs when you don't deserve it, and grace, a gift given alongside that forgiveness. But we don't leave it there. We further explore how love, as defined in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, aids us in showing mercy, and the role of forgiveness as highlighted in Matthew 6:14-15.
This episode isn't just about weddings and law enforcement encounters, it's about living in a state of joy and mercy. Guided by the parable of the unforgiving servant in Matthew 18:23-35, we underscore the importance of forgiveness and mercy in our lives as Christians. We encourage you to join our discussion, live in a state of joy and mercy, and help us spread the good news of Jesus Christ. We promise you an engaging and insightful conversation, filled with humor, anecdotes, and a fresh perspective on age-old teachings. Tune in, and let's share this journey together.

Imagine journeying through the riveting theories of creationism, unraveling the mysteries of the heavens and the earth. That's exactly what we do in this fascinating episode. We scrutinize the Biblical narrative of Genesis 1, diving deep into both young and old earth creationist theories. From ancient beliefs of a domed world to the days of creation, we unfold the events as they are described in the sacred text. We then move onto a spirited debate comparing the interpretation of a six-day creation against a universe billions of years old.
On a lighter note, we realize that the universe's origins might seem far removed from our daily living. As we explore further, we discuss that believing in a particular creationist theory isn't a prerequisite for salvation. We wrap up the episode by bringing a dash of humor, pondering the potential perks of discussing women. So, tune in to this episode as we peel back the layers of creation theories and offer a fresh take on these age-old beliefs.

In this engaging conversation, we voyage beyond the surface of the young earth creationist theory—a topic that has ignited heated debates. Triggered by a debate between Ken Hamm and Bill Nye the Science Guy, my curiosity led me down a rabbit hole of exploration into this theory. By dissecting the three fundamental distinctions between young and old earth creationists we're delving into a wealth of thought-provoking content. We promise an enchanting rollercoaster ride of information, potent viewpoints, and vigorous discussions, no matter where you stand on this spectrum.
Taking a leap further into the subject, we illuminate on the discrepancies between young and old earth creationists, with 'Extinct or Alive' serving as a fascinating case study. The debate takes a thrilling turn when we discuss Mitchell's personal stance and background. As an equilibrist who views the glass as perfectly filled—neither half full nor half empty—I invite everyone to join in this intriguing discourse, regardless of your beliefs. Prepare for a journey through time, beliefs, and understanding as we unravel this contentious debate.

Welcome to an enlightening exploration on the concept of meekness. The Pure Faith Podcast brings you a riveting discussion on how this biblical principle shapes our relationship with God and with people around us. We dissect the significance of 'being poor in spirit' and mourning - the intellectual and emotional counterparts of faith. We also share a heartfelt reflection on the life of Olivia, Michele's dearest daughter whose journey towards marriage is a story worth listening to.
Let's uncover the profound understanding of meekness as per scripture - seeing the bigger picture and placing trust in the Lord above worldly success. We'll use biblical examples like Titus 3:1-7 - a compelling passage on being submissive, obedient, and gentle while shunning quarrels. You'll discover how Jesus skillfully navigated authority with humility and meekness, alongside other compelling examples like Daniel and his three friends resisting Nebuchadnezzar's law. This episode is a journey you wouldn't want to miss - an opportunity to deepen your faith and enrich your understanding of biblical principles.

Ever found yourself pondering the intricate connection between our emotional and intellectual response to faith? That's exactly what we're unpacking in our latest chat. Clustered around the proverbial kitchen table, we send out warm wishes to Caitlin and Remington, soon to tie the knot, and tumble down memory lane, reliving those childhood summers spent cherry picking. We also share some snippets from our week, including Daniel's intriguing conversation, Zeke's podcast endeavors, and a particularly gripping debate over two-color cheese.
We then transition to the meatier part of our dialogue, dissecting the concept of mourning in relation to the poor in spirit. How does this tie into the emotional and intellectual aspects of faith? We turn to John 20:29 and Isaiah 61:1-3 for an insightful peek into the biblical definition of faith and the liberating sensation of freeing those poor in spirit from the shackles of sin. The journey doesn't stop there. We delve deeper, exploring the symbolic layers hidden in Isaiah's ashes, which represent the ancient posture of mourning and the inner turmoil of grief.
As we approach the end, we contemplate the beautiful transformation from ashes to a headdress, oil of gladness, and a garment of praise. This change symbolizes joy, happiness, and thankfulness, hallmarks of the freedom and liberty offered through Christ. It's a stunning culmination that ties the intellectual and emotional aspects of faith together, providing a comprehensive definition of religion. As we wrap up, we express our sincere gratitude to you, our listeners, and invite you to join us in this meaningful discourse. Shoot us your thoughts, questions, or feedback, and remember to keep the faith. Have a blessed day!

Are you ready to get up close and personal with the Beatitudes? Your hosts, Michele and Mitchell, will guide you on this enlightening journey, beginning with the third verse. We'll lend some clarity to the language and pacing of these verses, offering tips to enhance your understanding. We'll also share some personal stories from our recent church league volleyball game and a fun-filled 4th of July celebration. In it all, we stress the importance of giving your all in everything you do, a value that we've learned on the volleyball court.
Moving on, we challenge the concept of finding happiness through material possessions, proposing instead an intimate relationship with Jesus. We delve into what it means to be 'poor in spirit' and how it can bring you closer to Jesus, opening the gates of the kingdom of heaven. We weave through the Beatitudes' use of present and future tenses, revealing its crucial impact on our relationship with Jesus. And for a little spark, we passionately debate the meaning of "happy are those who mourn" and its link to joy. We'll wrap up the episode discussing the joy and power of sharing the good news of Jesus Christ and the beauty of experiencing a close relationship with Him. In this episode we finish the detour that we started in our last episode by covering Luke 4:40-44 before covering the parallel story of the calling of the first disciples in Luke 5:1-11. We then get back into Matthew where we begin our verse by verse breakdown of Matthew 4:18-22. Some interesting topics of discussion include who the gospel writers were actually writing to and how that influenced their writing; what it was actually like for a disciple looking for a Rabbi; and the things Simon had to put up with as a disciple of Jesus. We hope you enjoy.

In this episode we start into a new section which is Matthew 4:18-22 which is where Jesus calls His first disciples. We discuss who these disciples were and how three out of the four would make up Jesus’ inner circle. We then start a journey into looking at Luke’s version of this same calling, but in our normal fashion, that requires some clarification of background via a slight detour. By detour I mean that we cover the chronology of Jesus’ ministry from Matthew 4:17 through 4:18. This takes us through Luke 4:31-39 before we ran out of time. As always, we hope you find this enjoyable, entertaining and educational.

We once again take a good look at the difference between the Galilean and Judean Jews of that time, the true reason that Judas greeted Jesus with a kiss and the truth about the verdict brought down on Jesus.

In this episode we finally finish up the temptation story. We talk about how Jesus defeated the devil in this battle but how it's not the end of the war. That led us into a discussion on the devil, what he may or may not have known about Jesus' mission and then compared the Apostle's view of Jesus to the devil's view. We then discussed the idea of angels "ministering" to Jesus, what that may have consisted of and the health condition of Jesus. We then recapped by reading Matthew 3:13-4:11 and by looking at some notes and points that never made it into our notes.

That then led us to look as Exodus 17:1-7 before tying all three back together. We also made it through verse eight where we discussed mountains, kingdoms and glory.
