You need kids to generate ideas but nothing creative or interesting is happening. Sometimes the best way to move forward is to go backwards. Thinking of the worst outcomes or negative brainstorming could be one starting point to spark creativity. Thinking of negative outcomes could be easier to do instead of generating positive ideas. The next step is trying to understand why these ideas are negatives and solve them.

Teachers are wondering how to get engagement and design lessons while conducting class online. One quick way to get engagement online is to make your lesson a story. Use cartoon frames to create the story that is focused on the purpose of your lesson. Then ask the students to guess the end of the story and draw it. They can also create a new story using the cartoon template. Or they can create a drawing and label it with your learning goals.

Many teachers struggle to help students generate non-robotic ideas. One simple tool to help could be to use the plus, minus, multiply, divide tool to generate ideas. Creativity doesn’t have to be completely wild out of this world ideas. It could be as simple as looking at something in a different aspect. Teachers need to keep the purpose and the focus clear and keep the lesson moving.

Collaboration and group work continue to be promoted in schools as a goal. We should not do group work for the sake of group work; we need to be clear about the purpose, goal and outcomes.
Design thinking requires group work because idea generation works well when more minds are on a task. Students also need the opportunity to practice soft skills such as listening skills, accountability, empathy, and peer-learning. The ideal size for a group depends also depends on the task or project goals and outcomes.

Teachers want kids engaged in project work. A hook activity to start the project provides an insightful kick off that drives the whole project cycle. A hook activity gives a scenario kids can relate to easily. Kids do the task in the usual way. We flip the task and try again. Then kids need to reflect on the problem and how to solve it. This usually creates the motivation to finish the project.
