Walking the knife's edge between depth and brevity...
Today's guest is a master of the short story and professor at George Mason University. He's built a career in the trenches of the literary magazine world, where every word counts.
Our conversation digs deep into the art of the scene, with a ton of practical advice to keep readers turning pages no matter the length of your book.
Art Taylor is the Edgar Award-winning author of two collections: The Adventure of the Castle Thief and Other Expeditions and Indiscretions and The Boy Detective & The Summer of ’74 and Other Tales of Suspense. His debut book, On the Road with Del & Louise: A Novel in Stories, won the Agatha Award for Best First Novel. His short fiction has also won the Agatha, Anthony, Derringer, and Macavity Awards. Don't be a bunny. Avoid head hopping.
We're tackling one of Megan's biggest pet peeves this week; head hopping, or changing character point of view without a visual transition in between.
It happens when authors switch from the internal monologue or emotions of one character into another character, within the same scene, without a scene break or chapter break to identify the new point of view.
Tip #1: Know your point of view
Tip #2: Put yourself in the head of the character. Only write what that character can see or feel.

The journey of a writer is a blend of art and commerce, heart and head.
"Intuitive Editing is the process of taking the hard craft skills and melding it with creating the story that you're trying to create, not the one that some writing guru or dogma has suggested would be the right structure for you."
This week we're thrilled to have editor Tiffany Yates Martin on the show. She is strong believer there's a difference between editing and revising. Editing gives you the map for revising your story, while revising sculpts your novel into shape.
Tiffany Yates Martin has spent nearly thirty years as an editor in the publishing industry, working with major publishers and New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling and award-winning authors as well as indie and newer writers. She is the founder of FoxPrint Editorial (a Writer's Digest Top 100 Best Websites for Writers in 2023 and 2024) and author of Intuitive Editing: A Creative and Practical Guide to Revising Your Writing. She is a regular contributor to writers’ outlets like Writer’s Digest, Jane Friedman, and Writer Unboxed, and a frequent presenter and keynote speaker for writers’ organizations around the country. Under her pen name, Phoebe Fox, she is the author of six novels.

In this week's quick tips, we're taking a deep dive into the info dump.
What's that, you ask?
An info dump happens with the author writes everything they know about a character, setting, or their worldbuilding into a single stretch of prose. It's really common, especially for newer writers who feel like they need to explain everything for the reader.
TL:DR - You don't.
But how can you avoid it?
Tip #1: Beware the prologue. Readers don't care about the world until they care about the characters, which is why many will skip the prologue anyway. If you're going to write one, keep it short, sweet, and in the action.
Tip #2: We like the broken glass metaphor. Imagine you write it all down on a single pane of glass, then drop the glass. Pick up the pieces and insert the shards of information only where necessary.

Ever struggled to write dialogue that sounds natural and captures the essence of your characters?
This week's quick tips will help you overcome that challenge.
Tip #1: Listen to people talk in real life. Hang out in different locations with people from different walks of life. They don't speak the same!
Tip #2: Don't overdo dialect. While you want your characters to be unique, you don't want them to sound like a stereotype, and you don't want to tire out your reader.
Bonus Tip #3: Avoid fillers. You don't need to write "well", "um", or other conversational fillers. Get straight to the point.

From a family band to scriptwriting to romance novels and teaching...
Ines Johnson joins us on the show this week to talk about understanding the market and finding your place in the trends. She's a master at finding patterns and applies that skill to the art of storytelling while meeting reader needs. Lucky for us, she's also a teacher at heart. This episode is a masterclass for writers at every stage.
Lover of fairytales, folklore, and mythology, Ines Johnson spends her days reimagining the stories of old in a modern world. She writes books where damsels cause the distress, princesses wield swords, and moms save the world.
Aside from being a writer, professional reader, and teacher, Ines is a very bad Buddhist. She sits in sangha each week, and while others are meditating and getting their zen on, she’s contemplating how to use the teachings to strengthen her plots and character motivations.
Discover how to strike the perfect balance between art and commerce, and learn why understanding your audience's desires is crucial to penning a story that resonates.

The new digital-first traditional publisher...
It's been awhile since we talked about the differences, pros and cons of traditional versus indie publishing.
As our tagline says, "We believe there's no single right way to produce, publish, or promote your writing, only what works for you!"
Which is why we're excited to have Stephanie Carey on the show. Steph is the Commissioning Editor at Joffe Books, one of the UK's leading independent publishers of commercial fiction, and they’re currently looking to expand further into the American thriller/suspense market.
We met Stephanie at the 20Books to 50K conference in Vegas last November, and really enjoyed our conversations. We always think it’s a good idea to learn about all of the publishing options, and Joffee has been on the cutting edge of the NEW digital-first traditional publishing space. Both indie and traditional authors will learn a lot from this one!
The indie publishing landscape can feel like untamed wilderness, but Stephanie reveals how Joffe provides a collaborative yet hands-on approach, giving authors the reins over editorial decisions and cover art. This blend of control and support could be the nurturing ground needed for authors to flourish long-term.
If pitching publishers is on your horizon, Stephanie has advice on how to query, what to do, and better yet, what NOT to do as you seek a contract.

What makes a reader experience? How do you build a sustainable author career?
We're thrilled to have Kevin Tumlinson back on the show this week to talk about what he's coined "The Artisan Age." If you follow the podcast you know that we interviewed Kevin for our first episode of 2024, but we felt like we didn't have time to cover all the issues we wanted to talk about, including the rise of the reader experience and decline of the rapid release model.
If you're a writer looking to build a long-term author career, this is truly a conversation you won't want to miss.
Kevin Tumlinson is an award-winning and bestselling author of hundreds of books crafted to thrill and inspire. He recently left the role of CEO for BookSweeps, and is now helping to inspire writers as the industry seems to be shifting from a rapid release model to what Kevin has coined “The Artisan Age.” Kevin is known as the Voice of Indie Publishing for his work in podcasts, conferences, public speaking, and consulting for authors. Every day he helps and encourages hundreds of thousands of will-be and established authors around the globe.

Do you use AI tools in your writing?
AI is the hot button topic of the modern creative industry. No matter your position, the genie is out of the bottle, the cat is out of the bag, and Pandora's box is open. So how do we, as authors, decide where we stand and what our personal positions will be?
This week, we're thrilled to have Cameron Sutter—founder of Plottr—on the show to talk about his software but also dive into the world of AI tools and use cases for authors. We debunk common AI misconceptions, clarify the difference between true AI and machine learning, and argue for the irreplaceable human touch in art.
Cameron Sutter is a YA sci-fi/fantasy author, software developer, and the inventor of Plottr – the popular visual planning software for books and stories of all kinds. He's also the writer behind Real Human Writers, a substack newsletter that strives to demystify AI and show writers how to use it for their benefit . . . and when not to use it at all.

Have you ever considered writing serialized fiction? What about releasing your novel chapter by chapter as you write it?
In this week's episode, author coach Kim Boo York joins us to talk about how she rediscovered her love of writing through fan-fiction, dealt with imposter syndrome and the internal critic telling her there wasn't an audience for her story, but ultimately found success with serialized fiction, particularly with the Ream platform.
(Spoiler: It's about striking a balance between creating suspense and maintaining a steady flow of content, much like the anticipation of a favorite TV show's new episode.) But it's not just about the craft; it's about the community. We delve into the strategies for building a devoted readership and the joy of sharing works-in-progress.
KimBoo York is a GenX elder-goth whose main life purpose is to provide a good life for her rescue mutt, Keely-Boo, who is perfect and beyond reproach in every way. She is also a librarian, former project manager, and a professional author who wears too many hats and crosses too many genres including romance, fantasy, and non-fiction. She is also the co-host of the popular podcast, Around the Writer's Table.

When we’re first learning to write fiction, most of us know broadly what genre we’re targeting. You might tell people you're working on a Fantasy, or Thriller, or Romance novel. That's a great starting point, but it's not specific enough once you're trying to publish and market that book.
There’s nuance to the niche sub-genres on the major ebook retailers. In this episode, we're giving you our best tips to research your specific sub-genre so you can give readers exactly what they want.
Tip #1: Leverage the Amazon genre tree
Tip #2: Understand the popular tropes
Tip #3: Read books in your genre that are comparable to your own. Read a lot of them.

Have you ever attended an in-person writing conference or summit?
This week's guest is not only a full-time writer and productivity guru, she's organizing the Author Alchemy Summit in Portland February 22-25!
Jessie Kwak is an author and business book ghostwriter living in Portland, Oregon. She is the organizer of the Author Alchemy Summit, as well as the author of a supernatural thriller, two series of space scoundrel sci-fi crime novels, and a handful of productivity books including From Chaos to Creativity and From Big Idea to Book.
The path from scribbling in notebooks to professional ghostwriting is no small feat. Jessie opens up about her strategies for productivity, including reserving her mornings for creative fiction and afternoons for client work. It's not just about finding time but protecting it fiercely.
Our discussion then shifts to the more personal side of writing—self-promotion and confronting impostor syndrome. We affirm the power of individual narratives, sharing touching stories of readers who have found solace in our work, and reminding all authors that their words can be a sanctuary for someone out there.
In our final segment, the spotlight turns to the Author Alchemy Summit and all the work that goes into planning and attending a writers' conference. From the event's conception to networking for the introverted author, we explore strategies for creating an engaging, memorable conference that can leave a lasting impression on attendees.

Too many external voices...
Today's guest, a former lawyer turned author and book coach, joins us in this week's interview to talk about her writing process. Mary's journey from courtrooms to the craft of storytelling is not only inspiring but also enlightening for writers navigating their own creative paths.
Mary Adkins is the author of the nationally recognized novels “When You Read This”, “Privilege”, and “Palm Beach”. She is also an online writing coach who helps aspiring and established authors write through resistance and finish their books by finding a creative process that works for them. As the founder of The Book Incubator—a 12-month program to write, revise, and pitch your novel or memoir—she helps aspiring authors finish their books with joy and clarity.
Mary's biggest roadblock came up in having too many early readers, and too much feedback. Rewrites and critique classes nearly stole the joy of the story. Together, we share our experiences with reader teams, discuss the effectiveness of tools like Book Funnel and ProWritingAid, and emphasize the importance of breaks to reignite our storytelling passion.
Which is why Mary developed the Book Incubator program, detailing how it supports authors from draft to publication. Plus, we spotlight some invaluable resources for writers seeking to carve out their unique identity.
So, whether you're a lawyer with a secret novel-writing ambition or a seasoned author in search of camaraderie and guidance, join us for a conversation that celebrates the quirks and quandaries of the writer's journey.

As we catapult into a fresh year, many of us grapple with a mounting stack of tasks and the elusive beast that is organization. Luckily, tools like StoryOrigin are here to help!
We're thrilled to have guest Evan Gow on the show. Evan is the indie developer of StoryOrigin, a marketing tool and community of authors that work together to find reviewers, build mailing lists, increase sales, and stay on top of deadlines.
Throughout our conversation, Evan draws enlightening parallels between software development and crafting a story, offering insight into how Story Origin's early features—like reader magnets and group promos—have become a lifeline for authors.
As we unpack the strategic decisions behind the platform's initial launch and its gradual evolution, we underscore how StoryOrigin serves as an all-in-one haven for authors at all stages. From building a robust mailing list, to designing an author website, and managing the myriad post-production tasks that often overwhelm indie authors, the software has helpful tools for just about every author.

Do you know the difference between strategy and tactics?
In this week's Quick Tip, we're talking about how we can simplify our strategy to focus on the most impactful activities that will move us toward our goals. To do that, we first have to understand the difference between the day-to-day tasks (tactics) and the overarching plan (strategy.)
Keep in mind, you don't have to start from scratch. That's why we reviewed the past year first. Refining past strategies for the upcoming year can be just as impactful, if not more so.

Clarity. It's such an ephemeral concept. Ever changing and just out of reach, and yet we need clarity to focus.

It's the final countdown! How are you doing with NaNoWriMo?
Whether or not you "win" this month, you've done something amazing. You've created something out of nothing and gotten words on the page. That's incredible.
Which is why...
Tip #1: Celebrate! Whether you wrote 50k or 20k, recognize your effort this month.
Tip #2: Take a break! Don't immediately jump into editing or publishing this book. Give yourself a little space to breathe and think. Then go back to it with fresh eyes in the new year.
If you've found these short "betweeniesodes" helpful, please email us and let us know! We're discussing new monthly themes to keep the tips rolling, like goal-setting and planning for the New Year in December, and editing strategies in January. We'd love your feedback!

Bold statement: indie publishing is a maturing industry.
A few weeks ago, The Author Wheel attended the 20Books to 50k conference in Las Vegas, and in this episode we're going to talk about our experiences.
Our biggest takeaway? There are dozens, possibly hundreds, of different strategies for author success. Moreover, the very definition of success depends on the author and what they're looking to get out of their writing. With nearly two thousand writers in attendance, we saw it all, and talked about most of it.
The landscape of publishing is changing once again. We highlight successful indie authors who have secured contracts, expanded their reach through film and audio book adaptations, and built impressive careers. Understanding your genre, treating your books as a catalog, focusing on your target audience, and building a growth mindset are critical.

Ever feel like the world conspires to distract you every time you sit down to write?
In this week's "betweeniesode," award-winning fantasy author Megan Haskell and USA Today bestselling mystery thriller author Greta Boris share their best hacks to shut down distractions and focus on your writing.
Tip #1: Use technology to your advantage. Try out apps like Freedom which shut down distracting websites and social media across your devices, setting "Do Not Disturb" on your phone, or Brain.FM for white noise.
Tip #2: Change location. If your household chores are calling your name or family keeps unintentionally interrupting you, try going to a coffee shop or library to get those precious words on the page.

Ready for a front seat on the roller coaster ride of the writing world?
Today's guest has pretty much done it all. From working in the theater, to writing Pakistani soap operas in New York, to moving to L.A. to pitch T.V. scripts, then transitioning to prose during the pandemic, there's barely a writing project that Lawrence hasn't tried.
He's applied that same can-do attitude to marketing. His number one question—which we can all learn from—is "can I make this fun for myself?" Don't fear failure. It can all be fixed in post.

Lawrence Allan is an award winning mystery writer of the Jimmy Cooper Mysteries. His debut novel BIG F@!KING DEAL was a Shamus Award Finalist. He holds an MFA in Playwrighting from the University of Texas at Austin and lives in Los Angeles.

Tired of the traditional 9 to 5 grind and yearn to ignite your creative spark?
You've heard today's guest before . . . on our intro! We're talking with our podcast producer, Jim Wilbourne about his journey into the writing and publishing world.
Fun fact: a lot of writers don't write full time. Arguably most. In fact, many "full-time authors" have multiple streams of income. Jim has taken his background in music into the author world to provide audio engineering and editing services for audiobooks and podcasts—like ours! This has allowed him to embrace his unique writing style and still fulfill his creative career dreams.
We talk about how he focuses on evergreen content that can be shared essentially forever, his multi-years' long email autoresponder, repackaging content into multiple media formats, and the power of niche-focused marketing.
Jim Wilbourne is a creative at heart. If he’s not writing a novel, he’s writing and recording a song, or once again trying to learn how to draw. When he’s not working on the next project, he spends his free time working on another project. He totally has a life. Jim lives in the deep south with his wife and son and doesn’t miss the snow at all.

Should you self-narrate your own book? Should an indie take a traditional deal?
This week, mystery author and podcast host, Pamela Fagan Hutchins, is taking us on a journey into her writing world. We talk about the art of narrating your own audiobooks and how to manage continuity across multiple book series. Plus, hear first-hand why she's a dedicated indie who's just secured a traditional publishing contract—and the challenges that came along with it.
Pamela Fagan Hutchins is a USA Today bestselling and Silver Falchion Best Mystery winning mystery/thriller/suspense author (and recovering attorney and investigator) who splits time between an off-the-grid lodge on the face of Wyoming's Bighorn Mountains and a rustic cabin on Maine’s Lake Mooselookmeguntic with her husband, kids and grandkids, rescue pets and sled dogs, and draft cross horses.

The first step in defining your strategy? Getting clarity.Clarity. What is it? How do we find it? Where do we even start?
In today's duo episode, we're once again talking about finding clarity in our lives. It's a topic that's been on our minds a lot, both personally and professionally. And honestly, it just might be the most difficult part of developing a productivity system that works.
Clarity breathes life into stale systems and provides the focus for our future plans. But to get there, we have to first dig through our past and honestly assess where we are today. It can be a rough road, emotional and fraught with hard truths, but without knowing where we are, we can't plot our path to the future we want to achieve.

In this week’s episode, we’re talking about the writing process. Specifically, we’re talking with screenwriter and novelist John Gaspard about the similarities between the movie-making process and the novelist’s journey. They have a lot in common! From pre-production story planning to writing productivity, then editing and distribution, it’s a complementary system. And lucky for us, John is willing to share some of his best “popcorn principles” with us.
John is author of the Eli Marks mystery series and the Como Lake Players mystery series. He also has four other stand-alone novels, including two greyhound inspired pastiches: The Greyhound of the Baskervilles and A Christmas Carl.
John has directed six low-budget features and has written multiple books on the subject of low-budget filmmaking. In addition, he wrote two books for novelists: The Popcorn Principles and More Popcorn Principles: The Sequel.
His most recent fiction book is a prequel to his Eli Marks series, “The Curious Mysteries of Eli Marks.” The Middle Grade book introduces us to thirteen-year-old Eli and explores how he came to the world of magic and magicians.

Overcoming depression and finding your purpose in writing books…Books provide an escape. I think most writers know and appreciate this, but sometimes we forget our books reach people on a fundamental level, giving them an experience they can’t find in the real world.
Today’s guest, Tonya Kappes, leans into a desire to help one reader each week, and in so doing, has found massive success reaching thousands of readers. With over 180 books published, she is an incredibly savvy author-preneur who never loses sight of her core purpose.
Amazon All Star Author Tonya Kappes has written more than 180 southern cozy mysteries, all of which have graced numerous bestseller lists, including USA Today and Woman’s World Book Club pick twice. Best known for stories charged with southern charm, emotion and humor and filled with flawed characters, her novels have garnered reader praise and glowing critical reviews. She lives with her husband in northern Kentucky. Now that her four boys have flown out of the nest, Tonya writes full-time in her camper!

What's your writing ritual? Do you have an accountability partner? This week's guest really does it all. Not only a fiction author, she's a multi-business owner, consultant, and savvy entrepreneur. She's found success by partnering with others to keep herself accountable, and keeping her creative fiction writing space separate from her business publishing space. It seems to be working!
Chelle Honiker is the publisher of Indie Author Magazine, bringing over two decades of executive operations and leadership experience to the indie publishing world. She's a grounded digital nomad currently hunkered down near her adult daughters in Texas, but it's said she could run a small country with just the contents of her ever-present backpack. She'd rather not put it to the test.
In early 2021, together with Alice Briggs, Chelle launched Indie Author Magazine, where writing means business. Their vision is to be the trusted industry leader for indie authors by providing unbiased, well-researched, and articulate content, in the most engaging format possible.

Perfectionism, time management, and saying "no" . . .This week we're talking with Maddie Margarita, a local author friend who is a community organizer for writers all over Southern California. She generously shares her time with different writing groups, sometimes at the expense of her own writing time.
Maddie Margarita writes mystery/romantic suspense. She is the host of Lit Up! OC --a popular monthly writer’s salon in Southern California, and the Southern California Writers Association HUMP DAY BOOK TOUR broadcast live on Facebook every Wednesday morning, available on YouTube @SCWAwritersonline. When not writing, or talking, Maddie serves on the Board of the Southern California Writer’s Association and as President of Sisters-in Crime Orange County. A teaching artist at the Muzeo Museum & Cultural Center in Anaheim, CA., her short stories can be found in IT’S ALL IN THE STORY CALIFORNIA and BLOOD FICTION, both anthologies of short fiction.
Maddie's biggest roadblock is managing her time and learning how to set goals and say "no," so we're digging into our strategies to help her find clarity for her work.

The cover's sole purpose is to attract readers . . .Once again, we're talking about how critical it is to understand your genre when you're trying to reach readers, and the cover is a part of that package! But sometimes, you need to lean into the experts.
We were thrilled to have Mariah Sinclair, "Queen of Cozy" Covers, on the show. She's an award-winning cover designer who has worked for advertising agencies as a designer and digital marketer serving Fortune 500 companies and the City of Los Angeles. Then she designed her first book cover in 2001. Now known as the “Queen of Cozy,” Mariah has designed over 1500 book covers with her clients regularly dominating the top of the cozy mystery charts on Amazon.

The care and feeding of editors. This week Megan and Greta talk with Lynne Pearson, an enthusiastic editor. We discuss how to find and choose the right editor for your project and how to prepare your work for them.
Whether our books are traditionally published or indie published, we pay for editing. We pay cash or we pay with our time. Lynne gives us great tips on how to get the most out of that process.
Question of the week: Do you have a nightmare editing experience? Tell us about it. Let's chat on the Facebook page @AuthorWheel.

Self-Assessment, Clarity, and Finding Balance...We're wrapping up season two this week and discussing all of our takeaways from the interviews we've had this year. Without realizing it, this season seemed to revolve around the theme of finding clarity. Which is why we're so confident our free 7 Days to Your Author Brand email mini-course will help almost any author. We walk through the steps we took to develop an author mission statement and tagline. It gave us a vision of what we wanted to write and why, and we think it will help you do that too.

What goes into making an audiobook? This week we had a great conversation with Mary Castillo, a writer and audiobook narrator. Mary got started as a narrator with her own books, loved the process, and decided to dig in and learn the biz.
The conversation is both informative—especially if you're thinking about doing audiobooks one day—and inspirational. Mary stepped out, took a risk, and it paid off.
Mary Castillo is an audiobook narrator and author of romantic comedy and the Dori O. Paranormal Mystery series. Lost in the Light was nominated for the Daphne du Maurier Award in Paranormal Mystery and the winner of the Orange County Chapter of RWA’s Book Cover contest.

Using the Enneagram to Reclaim Your Author Career...This week we're continuing our ongoing conversation about the internal journey of building a sustainable author career that fits your life and your personality. This time, we're going deep into the Enneagram with Claire Taylor, author of Reclaim Your Author Career.
Claire is a comedy and mystery writer and a fiction strategist through her company, FFS Media. She helps authors create stories and align their careers using the Enneagram framework. Her mission is to help creatives avoid industry burnout and build sustainable careers.
In this interview, we talk about how to determine your Enneagram type, how to emphasize your natural gifts without turning your life into content, how to connect with your story theme, and much, much more.

Knowing Yourself, Finding What Works, and Building a Writing Network...This week we're talking about the journey. If you want a career as an author, then writing a book and having it published isn't really the goal. It's building a sustainable practice that fits your life and your personality.
To discover that process requires a lot of self-reflection and experimentation, as well as a supportive group of peers around you.
That's why, this week, we're thrilled to have Karen Walker on the show.
Karen Sue Walker writes and publishes the Bridal Shop Cozy Mysteries and Haunted Tearoom Cozy Mysteries. She's also the author of the Arrow Investigations Action-Adventure Mysteries.
In the last few years, she went through the testing process and was diagnosed with autism. For her, this was an awakening. She has been able to better understand herself, and create systems in which she can be the most productive.
She has also taken it on herself to network with other writers and create a community of support. Writing in long, binge sprints, Karen went from writing one book every few years to writing four a year.
And she tells us all just how she did it.

External validation, internal fulfillment, and satisfying your soul . . .How do you define success? Is it financial? Is it lifestyle? Is it accolades?
This seems to be a hot topic lately, and keeps coming up in our interviews and conversations, so we decided to tackle the issue head on in this duo episode. We've each developed goals and strategies to move our writing careers forward, but what does "success" actually look like?
Success is different for everyone, and right now we're on opposite sides of the spectrum despite having the same Enneagram personality type. Listen in as we get vulnerable on air!

Tropes are everywhere, trusting your instincts, and avoiding formulaic writing...This week we're talking with Jennifer Hilt about finding and trusting her own writing voice over multiple genres. Through her years of writing, she came to realize that tropes are not just clichés or story building blocks, they're actually relationships. Readers want something familiar with a surprising twist, and understanding tropes and how to use them can help you satisfy your fans.
Jennifer Hilt is a USA Today Bestselling author with more than 24 romances published across four pen names. She is the author of The Trope Thesaurus and Horror Trope Thesaurus. Her latest book, The Trope Thesaurus Romance has a Kickstarter campaign until 2/26.

Fulfilling Your Artistic Sensibilities, Being Ready for Opportunity, and Finding Your Critique Tribe...
In this episode, we interviewed speculative fiction author Michael H. Payne, who has spent most of his 30+ year career writing stories about talking animals. He came up through the trenches of traditional publishing, but stuck to his creative dreams and found success with short stories in an anthology with Neal Shusterman. The anthology launched to the New York Times Bestsellers list at number 8!
Michael H. Payne's novels have been published by Tor Books, Sofawolf Press, and his own "Hey, Your Nose is On Fire" Industries. His short stories have appeared in Asimov's Science Fiction magazine, the Sword & Sorceress anthologies, and numerous small-press zines and websites, and he hosts a two-hour radio program every Sunday afternoon from 4 till 6 on KUCI, 88.9FM, in Irvine, CA.

Defining character voice, writing for stress relief, and finding your own path . . .We were thrilled to have Jeff Elkins, the Dialogue Doctor, join us on this week's show! We talked about everything from coming from a non-writing background and how hard it was to admit we were writers, to developing character through their dialogue, and the fact that readers want something familiar with a twist.
Jeff is the author of 10 novels, an ongoing vella, and over 100 short stories. He trains authors in how to improve their dialogue through his podcast and coaching as the Dialogue Doctor.

The 4 C's of Indie Publishing, writing as a team sport, and framing your story boat to make sure it will float . . .This week on the podcast, Megan and Greta were thrilled to speak with Matty Dalrymple of the Indy Author podcast!
Matty Dalrymple is the author of the Lizzy Ballard Thrillers, the Ann Kinnear Suspense Novels, and the Ann Kinnear Suspense Shorts. Matty also podcasts, writes, speaks, and consults on the writing craft and the publishing voyage as The Indy Author. She has written books on the business of short fiction and podcasting for authors, and her articles have appeared in Writer’s Digest magazine.
Matty spent her early writing career nurturing a strong sounding board for both the craft of writing fiction, and the business of indie publishing. When she had to throw away a lot of words to fix a story, she developed her own framework to craft her story as she goes, speeding up her writing and minimizing rewrites.

As we begin the new year, we thought it would be a good time to talk about setting a strategy for 2023. Although we don't really believe in new year's resolutions, we do believe that the changing of the year can be a good time to reevaluate your goals and your motivations for being a writer.

Trading services, copyediting, and putting your best foot forward . . .Today, Greta and Megan have a conversation with prolific action thriller writer and editor, Steven Moore.
Englishman Steven's innate love of travel and a degree in anthropology and archaeology informed his action thriller fiction novels. Steven has lived on five continents and visited almost sixty countries, and sets most of his novels in places he has either lived or spent an extended period of time. When not on the road with his writer wife Leslie, Norwich in the UK is home, which they share with their rescue cats Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald and their rescue puppy Charles Dickens.
Steven has written and co-written 27 books and has copyedited over 100 books in the last three-ish years. He gives us his best advice on how to find and choose an editor, as well as what writers should do to prepare their manuscript before sending it off to their editor.

Obstinate characters, poor motivation, and plot setup . . .
In this duo episode, we're talking about characters. In particular, how do we handle unruly, obstinate, problematic characters who don't follow your author rules!
Sometimes it all comes down to understanding their motivations and personality. Other times, it's all about staying flexible in the moment and being a good character parent: not too strict, not too lenient.
Our favorite tool we use to help create our characters is the Enneagram Personality type. Check it out at EnneagramInstitute.com.

Banish brain fog, defeat writers' block, and write more words.
Greta and Megan go back a long way with today's guest, Roland Denzel. The message of his upcoming book for writers, The Author Brain, is both necessary and inspirational.
Roland Denzel is a health and fitness author who grew up overweight and sedentary before turning his life around. He caught the health and wellness bug at 35, lost 110 pounds, and has kept it off since 2003. Roland then became a nutritionist, a restorative exercise specialist, a coach, and has now authored over 10 books.
In addition to being a full-time coach and author, Roland has over 30 years in the printing and publishing industry. He created IndestructibleAuthor.com to help authors just like himself be more productive and write more books, all while staying healthy, happy, and sane.

Working with a small press, creating pop-up conferences, and giving yourself grace . . .
These are just some of the topics we tackled with Jodi Thompson.
Jodi Thompson has been writing for as long as she can remember, but her real talent lies in assisting others with their dreams. After spending some time as a freelance book manager and publicist, she founded a small, traditional publishing house, Fawkes Press. She also dabbles in cozy mysteries as Moira Bates. Earlier this year, she started Terrible Advice: Author Edition as guidance for writers in all stages.
In this episode, Megan and Greta talk with Jodi about traditional publishing and the benefits of a small press as opposed to one of the big guys. She shares her experience with creating pop-up conferences and why she's created her new YouTube channel. Last, we share our difficulties with perfectionism and giving ourselves enough grace and patience to work through the 10,000 hours needed for mastery.

Screenwriting, Putting in the Work, and Worldbuilding . . .Whether you write science-fiction and fantasy, thrillers, or contemporary women's fiction you have to develop a world for your characters to live in. Luckily, today's expert has the text to help.
M. D. Presley loves to talk all things worldbuilding with a narrative focus. A screenwriter and fantasy novelist, he's studied fantasy worldbuilding from Tolkien's early lectures through Jemisin's masterclass, which he's compiled in his nonfiction series Forging Fantasy Realms. And once a week he likes to demonstrate worldbuilding techniques, tricks, and tips by building a new world on the fly over at his YouTube channel.
Also, he once fit three bags of Skittles into his mouth. It's all been downhill since.
