Tess Connolly LCSW talks with Nellie Harden about 5 mindshifts when raising tweens and teens. They talk about being the family architect and the great transition when we shift from raising young children to tweens and teens. * Nellie introduces herself and tells us what she does now in her business and how she helps young women in the second half of childhood. * Nellie talks about her podcast and platform “The 6570 Family Project” which is how many days we have from our children being born to reaching 18yrs of age and how in this time we are setting the foundation of someone else’s life. * Nellie talks about the population that she works with now and how she serves them. * Nellie talks about how different all our children are and how we need to reach them all differently according to that specific child so you can build up those relationships and set the foundations for their childhood. * Tess and Nellie discuss “the great transition” as we move through a time where our children start to separate from us as parents. * Nellie talks about the team mentality and approaching things differently as you move through this transition together. * Tess and Nellie talk about our children having a sense of who they are and where they belong and that we need to help them not live outside in but help them live inside out. * Tess and Nellie talk about the importance of one and one time with each of your children and how we can use this time to check in with our children. Nellie talks about how she does that with her children and how it works for them. * Tess and Nellie talk about how we approach having this one on one time with our children if they havent been used to us doing it and how we move into having this time with them and connecting. * Tess and Nellie discuss the importance of having patience with our children and giving them time to open up within these conversations. * Nellie is most grateful for her insatiable want to learn which is at the root of everything that she has been able to do as a parent, person, teacher and member of society and the world.

Tess Connolly LCSW talks with Sarah McLaughlin LSW about creating inclusive communities which is a chapter in her book “Raising Humans with Hearts” * Tess gives an introduction to the topic and her experiences with building her own community when moving areas with her then 5yr old after her divorce. * Tess and Sarah talk about the importance of creating an inclusive community. * Tess and Sarah discuss how we can help develop inclusive communities within our own parenting journey. * Sarah talks about being aware of ourselves and how we were parented and what changes we might need to shift in our own parenting journey compared to what we experienced when we were growing up. * Tess talks about her experiences regarding her son and his experience of school and the diversity that he sees and how we learn a lot from our children and how fluid their view is now with regards to sexuality within their peer groups. * Sarah talks about groups that are available within our community called “Talking Circles” and these are groups that come into communities and talk about their earliest experiences about race. * Sarah talks about one of our biggest biases is that we don't see our own bias and that there are tests we can take via Harvard implicit association tests to see where we can see how biased we are and she also talks about a podcast that helps us to look at our own biases called “Nice white parents”. * Tess and Sarah talk about what we can do as parents to help shift and open up ourselves to becoming more inclusive so we can become a more credible model to our children. * Tess and Sarah talk about instances where conversations might come up with our children where they witness something that they question, for example homeless people in the street and how we have the conversation with our children about differences between people in our community. * Tess and Sarah talk about the importance of getting comfortable being uncomfortable and getting honest with yourself so you can be honest with your children. Looking at the fact that we are learning alongside our children. That we can tell our children that we didn’t have these conversations when we were younger within our families so they have an understanding of where we are coming from. * Sarah is most grateful for her stove in her house keeping her warm with the cold weather she is experiencing where she lives at the moment.

Tess Connolly LCSW talks about ‘Getting “back to basics" with our pandemic stress.’ She acknowledges all of our ongoing stress along with the ongoing changes we are experiencing in our families and some really simple ways to help manage during these times.
Tess shares with us some things that she is doing with her family to help deal with the stress of the pandemic.
She talks about taking a break from watching the news and taking time to be present and relax and care for yourself.
Making sure we take time to get ‘back to basics’ with things such as making sure we are getting sleep and eating healthy, drinking water and making sure we are taking time to do something fun and taking care of ourselves and our mental health.
Finally, practicing gratitude everyday and including your tween or teen in this practice.
Finally, Tess shares a poem from Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese Monk called “What seeds are you watering today?” Listen to this episode to hear his inspirational words.
During this episode we also learn about the masterclass that Tess has coming up in February, about the struggle we face with the use of devices and screen time with our tween and teens.

Tess Connolly LCSW talks about what we want for our children and how people always mention happiness when answering this question. Tess talks about this being an abstract state and that of course we want our children to be happy but what else do we want for our children apart from happiness?
Tess shares with us that sometimes we have to deal with situations that don't make us happy out in the real world and how she would like for our kids to be curious and go out into the world, away from their family of origin to find out who they are.
She talks about them having healthy coping strategies and emotional self-regulation for when times are tough.
Tess talks about the importance of healthy relationships and that this includes learning to be flexible, have good boundaries in relationships, and the ability to be vulnerable in trusted relationships. And her hope for our kids to know joy and the freedom in being their authentic selves.
Tess tells us WHY she does this work of parent coaching and that healthy relationships - particularly the relationship we have with our tweenagers is the model they will take out into the world.
She shares some effective ways we can model this behavior through our relationships we have with our children and friends and families.

Tess Connolly talks with Zach Gottlieb -Mental Health from a Teenage Boy Perspective
Zach’s story of how and why he began talking about mental health, breaking down barriers
Zach’s mom brought him up talking about feelings and he wants other people feeling comfortable talking about feelings too
Zach encourages us to not press our kids to talk, let your kids know that you’re there when they are ready to talk “I’m available to talk when you’re ready..”
Talk about your own feelings to model what you’d like from your teen
Asking more specific questions to teens rather than a general “how was your day?
Don’t have a big reaction when listening to your teen and not overreacting
Explain why you don't want your teen doing something so they understand better
Importance of us parents creating a space and being consistently calm to foster a conversation because they feel safe and they are getting “guidance than punishment”
Biggest struggles for teens right now; there’s more social pressure due to social media and there are positives and negatives with social media-hard for teens to have FOMO
He talks about his platform on IG@Talk with Zach and teens can anonymously ask him questions and then he answers the teens questions.
Even if it’s hard, we still need to talk about it
Males can talk about mental health and feelings too
Importance of parents modeling good mental health for their teens
He’s grateful for a parent that let him know feelings are ok and he can express them

Today we’re joined by host Tess Connolly’s parents, Rick and Martha. In 1976, these parents moved their five children, all under the age of ten, to the woods in New Hampshire with no electricity and no running water so they could find freedom, individuality, and live through their own values.
This experience instilled the values of cooperation, hard work, and connectedness and laid the foundation for who Tess is today. During this episode, Rick and Martha share how they prepared for this move, why they are grateful their family had this experience, and what happened that they didn’t expect.
