Madeline also revealed that financial infidelity, often referred to as financial adultery, has become the #1 prevailing issue in escalating divorce rates. She revealed that many of her female clients are caught in the crossfire of being named on all debts but not on the assets represented by those loans. Madeline speaks of the increasing number of female clients she works with who find themselves in critical credit card debt due to trying to make a career in multi-level marketing (MLM), network marketing, or associate marketing. Research reveals that around 5% of all women in these industries actually make money, the rest often fall out of the industry or into crimpling debt. NINA SIMONS is Co-founder and Chief Relationship Officer at Bioneers and leads its Everywoman’s Leadership program. Throughout her career spanning the nonprofit, social entrepreneurship, corporate, and philanthropic sectors, Nina has worked with nearly a thousand diverse women leaders across disciplines, race, class, age and orientation to create conditions for mutual learning, trust and leadership development. She co-edited Moonrise: The Power of Women Leading from the Heart, and authored Nature, Culture, and the Sacred: A Woman Listens for Leadership—released as a second edition in 2022 with an accompanying discussion guide and embodied practices. I recently had the gift of sitting with author, speaker and social justice advocate, Nina Simons. Starting with how one of the patriarchy’s primary tactics for maintaining dominant control is to prevent women from discovering their full potential as leaders provided a rich and potent conversation. The patriarchy, justifiably, fears that when women come together in relationships built on trust, they have the power to develop each other’s leadership skills profoundly and rapidly. As Nina and I discussed, women are moving past the time of letting the patriarchy’s fear become their limitation. As Nina shared from her years of study, a primary contributor to the hyper- masculinization in which we have been living starting with The Burning Times. 300 years of persecution of women has left deep-seated epigenetic trauma that still effects all people of our current generations. As the listener will hear, Nina is unwavering in her hearts knowing that as women break free from the labels that have been bequeathed to them, we will all become the powerful

Nancy Hollander is an internationally recognized US criminal defense lawyer. She is also an Associate Tenant at London’s Doughty Street Chambers and Of Counsel to the Geneva firm of Savolainen Avocats. Ms. Hollander has been admitted to practice in the US Supreme Court, and federal, state, and military courts. She is also on the list of counsel for the ICC as well as the DOJ Pool of Qualified Civilian Defense Counsel for Military Commissions. For more than four decades, Ms. Hollander’s practice has largely been devoted to representing individuals and organizations accused of crimes, including those involving national security issues, in trial and on appeal. She was lead appellate counsel for Chelsea Manning and she won Ms. Manning’s release in 2017 when President Obama commuted her sentence from 35 years to seven years. Ms. Hollander has also represented two prisoners at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, and in 2016, she won the release of one of them – Mohamedou Ould Slahi – who had been incarcerated for 14 years without charge. His story is chronicled in his New York Times bestselling book, Guantanamo Diary, which Ms. Hollander helped facilitate and publish, and in a feature film, The Mauritanian, where she was played by Oscar-winning actress, Jodie Foster. In addition to her criminal defense practice, Ms. Hollander has been counseled in civil cases, forfeitures, and administrative hearings, and she has argued and won a historic case involving religious freedom in the US Supreme Court. Ms. Hollander has also served as a consultant to the defense in international cases. She has created and taught in hundreds of trial practice programs in the US, internationally in Russia, Sweden, the UK, Portugal, Switzerland, and France for lawyers practicing in international criminal tribunals. She has also written extensively and conducted more than 200 seminars and presentations around the globe on various subjects, including the securing of evidence in international cases, forfeiture, illegal search and seizure, expert witnesses, defense of child abuse cases, ethics, evidence, and trial practice. In 1992-93, Ms. Hollander was the first woman president of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Ms. Hollander has also received many professional awards. Bio Patrice D’Amato has spent 38 years as a practicing nurse in both clinical and academic settings with a focus on adult medical surgical, critical care, gerontology, and women’s health. After practicing as a women’s health nurse practitioner in abortion care more than 20 years ago, she left clinical practice to teach nursing at the university level. An award-winning educator, Patrice has served as a university course director for a top- ranked school of nursing. She also serves as a project director for an international health organization dedicated to providing education opportunities in developing countries. Patrice’s passion for nursing started early in childhood as she saw the deep pride and satisfaction her mom and grandmother derived from the early era of professional nursing. She feels fortunate to have been able to delve into a variety of specialties to witness and support people through birth, death, and everything in between. Patrice’s love of both science and spirituality, and how they intersect in the natural world, has guided her to teach and mentor students for many years. She also immensely enjoys a good laugh from her fondness of the world’s quirks and reminders not to take herself or anyone else too seriously.
Born in New York, Patrice now lives in Maryland. In her free time, she volunteers as a hospice singer and teaches conversational English in Spanish-speaking countries such as Spain and Peru. She is an avid Zumba enthusiast, hiker, and lover of historical fiction.

From her experiences of having emergency room staff regularly calling to ask for assistance and tutelage on how to treat a patient in their hospital, due to the lack of training while in medical school, to the awareness that abortion is no safer in blue states than red states, her depth and breadth of experience sheds new light on the experience. Bio Patrice D’Amato has spent 38 years as a practicing nurse in both clinical and academic settings with a focus on adult medical-surgical, critical care, gerontology, and women’s health. After practicing as a women’s health nurse practitioner in abortion care more than 20 years ago, she left clinical practice to teach nursing at the university level. An award-winning educator, Patrice has served as a university course director for a top- ranked school of nursing. She also serves as a project director for an international health organization dedicated to providing education opportunities in developing countries. Patrice’s passion for nursing started early in childhood as she saw the deep pride and satisfaction her mom and grandmother derived from the early era of professional nursing. She feels fortunate to have been able to delve into a variety of specialties to witness and support people through birth, death, and everything in between. Patrice’s love of both science and spirituality, and how they intersect in the natural world, has guided her to teach and mentor students for many years. She also immensely enjoys a good laugh from her fondness of the world’s quirks and reminders not to take herself or anyone else too seriously.

Bio
I have been so fortunate to work in politics, in parliaments, and with politicians around
the globe for 14 years. I have entered some incredible democratic spaces at pivotal
moments in history, and I have observed the human impact of the political experience
amongst individuals charged with navigating it for all our sake. I started out being
interested in how democratic practices within the national parliament of South Africa
would be re-shaped at the end of apartheid, which was the focus of my PhD. The
majority of those entering the new parliament in 1994 had no experience of democracy
from the inside, and I was fascinated to realise that a person's experience of
democracy, which in this instance was one of exclusion, shapes their actions
irrespective of their current reality and experiences. Since then I have worked
internationally with politicians around the globe and I have come to realisation that all
politicians know their feelings do not matter, and should not matter, to the content of
their policy decisions. Yet, they still have them, and those feelings still play a role in
shaping the form democracy takes, and this form shapes political leadership culture.
Consequently, we may contemplate creating AI politicians to override this, but until this
happens I intend to spend the rest of my life helping us all to understand the reality of
how it feels to deliver democracy, with the ultimate aim of improving the quality of
democratic processes and innovating democratic institutions.

Being a woman of European decent, I always look forward to and value the opportunity to speak with women who are leaders in DE&I for the chance to discover more of my own unconscious bias that was trained from birth. The privilege of having Dr. Sacha Joseph-Mathews as a guest was a powerful experience in this direction. Her wisdom about how common it is to overlook the oppressions of those around us served to heighted my own awareness of oppressive nuances I might have previously overlooked. Dr. Sacha Joseph-Mathews is the Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and a Marketing Professor in the Eberhardt School of Business at the University of the Pacific. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications from the University of the West Indies, Mona campus, a Masters of Science degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management, and a PhD in Business Administration with a specialization in marketing. She obtained both her Masters and PhD degrees from Florida State University. Professor Joseph-Mathews has been working and teaching in undergraduate, graduate and executive education for over 10 years.
Dr. Joseph-Mathews has taught classes in the United States, the Caribbean Asia and Africa in international marketing, international business, marketing management, services marketing, advertising and promotions, hospitality and services management, entrepreneurial marketing, customer service, diversity management and event planning. She has presented and published articles in tourism, marketing, advertising, ethical consumption, diversity and inclusion, green consumerism, supply chain management and international trade. As a professor Dr. Mathews has been actively involved in community outreach which has led her to work with social entrepreneurs across the world teaching them marketing fundamentals. She is particularly passionate about working with female social entrepreneurs.
In addition to being an academic, Professor Joseph-Mathews has worked as a researcher and DEI consultant for many non-profit and for-profit organizations, across the globe. These organizations including the State of Florida, Ashoka Arab World, FLIP Uganda, Unreasonable Institute, The Lodi Police Department, San Joaquin Sheriffs, Unreasonable East Africa, Bay Area Rapid Transit, Metro LA, Access Transit, Lodi Unified School District, Arthur Lok Jack School of Graduate Studies, the University of the West Indies and the Florida Chamber of Commerce. Her work as a DEI consultant has led her to do DEI strategic planning with boards, train senior managers and C suite executives and facilitate listening tours and unconscious bias workshops with large and small organizations alike.

A fierce warrior for women’s rights, bodily autonomy, and naming women in the U.S. Constitution, the conversation with Karen Hinton is stimulating and informative. Best known for her role as press secretary to both former Housing Secretary Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, Karen has always been determined to “speak up not shut up” on issues that impact women. From discussing the Dobbs case that saw the Supreme Court overturning Roe v Wade, to her experiences with the issue of abortion, both directly personal and within her community, Karen shared her commitment to be instrumental in change and how we can all become change agents in our own communities and the country at large.
Biography
Mississippi native Karen Hinton is a nationally-recognized media professional in
Washington and New York. Best known for her role as press secretary to both former
Housing Secretary Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de
Blasio, Hinton played what Politico dubbed the “Helen of Troy role” in the clash between
Cuomo, now the former Governor of New York, and Mayor de Blasio. The New York
Times called the clash “one of America’s ugliest political feuds.”
Hinton cut her teeth as the press secretary for the first Black Congressman from
Mississippi since Reconstruction in 1986. The Democratic National Committee hired her
in 1989, serving a similar role for Ron Brown, who was the first Black Chairman of the
DNC and a key political strategist to elect Bill Clinton as President. In
1995, Hinton joined the Clinton Administration as press secretary for Cuomo at the U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development. During that time, President Clinton
began to face charges of womanizing (and worse). Hinton later relocated to New York
and became Mayor de Blasio’s press secretary. She found herself at the center of the
crossfire between longtime frenemies Cuomo and de Blasio, often becoming the subject
of news coverage herself.
Known for never ducking from a fight, Hinton was at the peak of her career when a
catastrophic brain injury from a freak accident confronted her with the battle of her life.
Emerging from a coma, and learning to walk and talk again, Hinton was determined to
“speak up not shut up” on issues involving women, men, and power in politics.

Each time I speak with Wendy Murphy I come away feeling educated, inspired, and informed about the continuing struggle for us, as women, to achieve full human status in the U.S. Constitution. Having the opportunity to hear about Mitzi’s amazing and courageous trek to Ukraine inspired and fascinated me on multiple levels. I got quite a chuckle out of the fact that although approved by the US government to travel as a war correspondent at age 70, NATO deemed her too old. Never one to be stopped, at 81 Mitzi accepted an invitation from General Nebytov of Kyiv Regional Police. Like everyone else, I’ve seen the reports, written and filmed, of the trials of Ukraine’s people, and yet hearing the perspective of a female, American war correspondent filled in so many blanks and has left me with a profoundly increased respect for the courage and tenacity of both Mitzi and the people of Ukraine.

Lesley recently found herself in a conversation that provided her a whole new level of awareness of workplace abuse that untold women, and some men, are experiencing daily. In this episode Aliza Shatzman courageously shares her story of abuse at the hands of a DC Superior Court Judge for whom she was clerking, right out of law school. Aliza shares the devastating results of this experience for which she had no recourse due to judicial immunity from accountability. Courageously, she ultimately picked herself up and is now the President and Co-Founder of The Legal Accountability Project. Her passion and mission is to change the rules of the game that sees women disproportionately facing harassment and retaliation during clerkships. Undeserved punishments that they either suffer in silence or find driving them from the legal profession. Aliza’s organization is providing a voice for the mistreated clerks--particularly, but not exclusively, women--who reach out every day to thank her for speaking out. They openly confess that they could never find the courage to speak publicly, all the while encouraging Aliza to keep going. Aliza Shatzman is the President and Co-Founder of The Legal Accountability Project, a nonprofit aimed at ensuring that as many law clerks as possible have positive clerkship experiences, while extending support and resources to those who do not.
Aliza earned her BA from Williams College and her JD from Washington University School of Law in St. Louis.
After law school, Aliza clerked in DC Superior Court during the 2019-2020 term. In March 2022, Aliza submitted written testimony for a House Judiciary subcommittee hearing about the lack of workplace protections in the federal judiciary, detailing her personal experience with gender discrimination, harassment, and retaliation by a former DC judge.
Aliza now writes and speaks regularly about judicial accountability. She has been published in numerous forums, including the UCLA Journal of Gender & Law, the NYU Journal of Legislation & Public Policy, Above the Law, Law360, Slate, Ms. Magazine, and Balls & Strikes.

Mississippi native Karen Hinton is a nationally-recognized media professional in Washington and New York. Best known for her role as press secretary to both former Housing Secretary Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, Hinton played what Politico dubbed the “Helen of Troy role” in the clash between Cuomo, now the former Governor of New York, and Mayor de Blasio. The New York Times called the clash “one of America’s ugliest political feuds.”
Hinton cut her teeth as the press secretary for the first Black Congressman from Mississippi since Reconstruction in 1986. The Democratic National Committee hired her in 1989, serving a similar role for Ron Brown, who was the first Black Chairman of the DNC and a key political strategist to elect Bill Clinton as President. In 1995, Hinton joined the Clinton Administration as press secretary for Cuomo at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. During that time, President Clinton began to face charges of womanizing (and worse). Hinton later relocated to New York and became Mayor de Blasio’s press secretary. She found herself at the center of the crossfire between longtime frenemies Cuomo and de Blasio, often becoming the subject of news coverage herself.
Known from never ducking from a fight, Hinton was at the peak of her career when a catastrophic brain injury from a freak accident confronted her with the battle of her life. Emerging from a coma, learning to walk and talk again, Hinton was determined to “speak up not shut up” on issues involving women, men and power in politics

Jane Bradley was raised on a sprawling, working ranch in New Mexico and empowered by her cowboy father to go places no woman of her time had ever gone. We’ve all heard the term Mindfulness as it has become front and center over the past few years. There are meditation groups, silence groups, yoga groups and untold others, all created to support the achievement of mindfulness. Then there are books, online trainings, social media gurus and more. Simultaneously it has become common to hear admonishments to stay out of the mind and be in the moment. It’s enough to drive one’s mind into an endless spin about what is and isn’t this thing called ‘mindfulness.’ I’ve come to the personal conclusion that it is whatever brings peace and balance. The means of getting there is far less relevant than the ‘emotional state’ of where we are in our own skin.

Betsy Gaines Quammen is a writer, historian and conservationist. She is the author of American Zion: Cliven Bundy, God, and Western Public Lands. She has a doctorate in Environmental History from Montana State University and Master's of Science in Environmental Studies. Over the years, she has studied various religious traditions, with particular attention to how cultures view landscape and wildlife. She worked for years on conservation projects in Bhutan, and throughout the western United States—first with the East African Wildlife Society in Kenya and later with various conservation groups in Montana, Idaho and Wyoming on grizzly bear conservation, ecosystem protection and grazing issues. The rural American West, pastoral communities of northern Mongolia, and the grasslands of East Africa have been her main areas of interest. Betsy lives in Bozeman, Montana with her husband, writer David Quammen, three huge dogs, an overweight cat, and a pretty big python named Boots. Including, the extraordinary events that allowed she and her ‘now’ husband to come to know each other, fall in love, and become the inspiration for one author’s romance novel.
Join Lesley as she follows Mary through her amazing retelling of events that would have crushed a lesser woman to become an inspiration to many. Mary shares some of the key mindsets that lifted her from a wheelchair, having been t-boned on her bicycle. The same mindsets that helped her to remain standing after losing her mother, 32yo son and 8yo niece over a short 10-month period. In 2019 Mary received her certification from Brené Brown to facilitate her Dare to Lead curriculum and is now gearing up to use this in supporting others to heal their own grief.
Mary L. Jury describes her life as a fairly eclectic, non-linear journey. She was a college athlete, single mom, entrepreneur and is now on the journey to coaching, (perhaps around grief) and facilitating Brené Brown’s Dare to Lead curriculum. In 2010, Mary was t-boned by a car while riding her bike. Thrown 40ft she landed on her head. Sustaining substantial injuries, Mary was in a wheelchair for 8 weeks. At that time, her current husband & she had only had 2 dates. Nevertheless, when he heard of the accident he went right to the hospital and visited regularly. The two got to know each other through Mary’s recovery. A romance novelist once used their story as inspiration for a book. They were married in January of 2012. On March 17, 2019, Mary’s mom passed away. 3 weeks later, her 32yo son, Ryan, died (4/12/19- her mother’s birthday) and on January 1, 2020, Mary’s 8yo niece died of cancer. She sold her Contract Furniture Business in January 2022 and looks forward to the next chapter.

Barbara was an early member of the Corrales Mainstreet Board and, during her six-year tenure, was instrumental in developing a firm footing for the government/community partnership. In 2008 she received a state Mainstreet award for Excellence in Fundraising. She also served on the Rio Rancho Regional Chamber of Commerce board for three years where one of her roles was liaison to the Corrales business community. One of her proudest accomplishments was organizing and leading a trade mission to Israel that was a jointly sponsored by ACI and the NM-Israel Business Exchange, where she was a board member. Barbara is a passionate supporter of business owners. She uses her experience to help business owners with property sales, purchases and leases, as well as helping owners reap the rewards of their investment in their businesses at the time of sale. When she is not working, she loves to travel and through her international work, she has acquired a “working knowledge” of French and Spanish and can make her way through a newspaper or a basic conversation. Chantal Bilodeau is a Montreal-born, New York-based playwright whose work focuses on the intersection of science, policy, art, and climate change. She founded the Arts & Climate Initiative over a decade ago and in her capacity as artistic director, has been instrumental in getting the theatre and educational communities, as well as audiences in the US and abroad, to engage in climate action through programming that includes live events, talks, publications, workshops, national and international convenings, and a worldwide distributed theatre festival. She has spoken about the power of live storytelling to move people toward climate action in conferences and at universities in the US, Canada, and Europe, and has contributed to several academic volumes, including International Climate Protection (Springer, 2019), and Extraordinary Partnership: How the Arts and Humanities Are Transforming America (Lever Press, 2020). She is the co-editor of an anthology of short plays about the climate crisis titled Lighting the Way (2020). Awards include the Woodward International Playwriting Prize as well as First Prize in the Earth Matters on Stage Ecodrama Festival and the Uprising National Playwriting Competition. Her work has been presented in a dozen countries around the world. She is currently writing a series of eight plays that look at the social and environmental changes taking place in the eight Arctic states. In 2019, she was named one of “8 Trailblazers Who Are Changing the Climate Conversation” by Audubon Magazine.

IN CELEBRATION OF WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH:
Lesley recently experienced the honor of sharing a conversation with Dr. Martha Burk who has lived and worked on the forefront of the struggle for women’s rights for the majority of her life. Dr. Burk guides the listeners on an edifying walk through the details, nuances and progressions of the legislative struggles that have been taken on behalf of women through the decades. Glancing back to 1871 when the 14th amendment was passed that claimed to give all person’s equal protection, she reminds the listener that ‘persons’ was exclusive to men. The conversation proceeds to 1920, 52 years later, when women finally got the vote. Dr. Burk drops in on the 1960’s when the Equal Rights Amendment was forming and the early 1970’s and the struggle for ratification. Finally, on to 2020, 149 years after men were given equal protection under the U. S. Constitution, the Equal Rights Amendment received the number of state ratifications necessary to give women equal protection under the U.S. Listeners will learn why this did not produce resolution to that protracted struggle. Through this journey Dr. Burk highlights the struggles that are yet ongoing and a deep understanding of those, once thought resolved, are back in the frame, and are a threat to all women, be they feminist or not.
Mitzi Perdue is the daughter of the co-founder and president of the Sheraton Hotel Chain, and she is also the widow of another business titan, Frank Perdue, the chicken guy who's products are now sold in more than 50 countries. In her early years she became one of only nine women who were rice farmers, and the only one who did it on her own versus inheriting a farm from a deceased husband. During those years she also became president of the oldest Farm Women’s Organization. In her 30’s Mitzi had an experience that inspired her to follow her lifelong dream of becoming a writer, publishing and being on radio. This led to her having her own television show that was syndicated to 72 stations. She is also a longstanding member of Business and Professional Women.

In this episode Dot Bekker joins Lesley to share the story of her journey of a lifetime. In late 2018 Dot left Europe after 21 years to drive home to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Taking a ferry from Barcelona to Morocco with her 20 year old Ford Transit she drove on her own through 18 African countries, 20000km over 8.5 months. Dot shares the journey through a part of the vast continent of Africa that she was not familiar with laughing that, “Ignorance got me a very long way.” Dot is passionate about Africa and lovingly paints a warm portrait of it’s people’s capacity for great humour, their openhearted waves to everyone they see, be them friend or stranger and their quickness to give aide. Something she learned of while driving through one particular country that had no fuel stations. Rescued by friendly strangers introduced her to she dubbed the tradition of ‘African Roadside Assistance.’ But there are also the trials that Dot speaks to. Her passion is to make strides toward Gender Equality through the education of girls and Entrepreneurship. In a country where 65% of the girls can’t go to high school due to the cost of both the school and the required uniforms, Dot is a committed voice and activist for rethink and reinventing education. Angela Legh grew up in San Francisco, CA. She had an alcoholic father and an angelic mother, who both had a profound impact on her life.
Her father taught her that the behaviors of others made her a powerless victim; her mother taught her to be loving to everyone; including those who hurt you.
Angela’s family home was destroyed by fire when she was six years old. She grew up to marry an emotionally abusive man; she stayed for 32 years because she had not yet developed the internal strength to leave.
Fire and water intruded on her life again with the 2017 Tubbs Wildfire in Northern California which reduced her home to ash. For the second time she almost drowned in the Atlantic off the coast of Portugal.
The return of these earlier losses forced Angela to examine everything about herself and her life.
Angela is now an author and self-development mentor. Her children's book series, The Bella Santini Chronicles, has received high praise and is known for helping children learn how to manage their emotions.

From the confining restrictions imposed by her Mormon upbringing to her newly found freedom, Lesley recently had the opportunity to sit with Wendi Kirby. With courage and transparency Wendi shares her emotional restrictive experience of being raised in an environment that denied her the right to her very thoughts, lest they disappoint God. This same restriction convinced her that she had no right to dream of being a concert pianist. Her sole choice being to teach children and be a good and faithful wife.
In 2008 Wendi was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. “I feel like being in the throat, it could be that "DNA expression" from repressing my voice...spending so many years keeping quiet and not speaking up for myself under fear or the belief that I "shouldn't", says Wendi. But his is not a sad story that Wendi shares. Rather one of grit, commitment to her own voice, and ultimate victory. It is a conversation, full of inspiration, about finding one’s own path to living fully and freely.
Wendi Kirby, NCTM has had a passion for piano that began at age five and due to her high-level classical training she began teaching at age fifteen. Later, with the birth of her two daughters, Wendi focused her attention on the benefits of music for young children and became a certified Kindermusik instructor. After thirty successful years, Wendi recently launched Minuet, her own program for newborn through five-year-old children.

Lesley recently spent a few hours with Dominique Roe-Sepowitz, MSW, Ph.D., a nationally recognized expert on human trafficking. Through WWSK, they are sharing some of that conversation as a means of spreading valuable insights. Join us as they discuss the enormous spread of trafficking in this country and the challenges faced by individuals like Dr. Roe-Sepowitz who are deep in the fight to create resolutions. Dr. Roe-Sepowitz also shares effective approaches for teaching our kids how to avoid becoming victims, along with access to the pamphlets she and her team created for educating parents and educators in easily identifying red flags.
In 2018, Dr. Roe-Sepowitz presented a TedX, Hidden in Plain Sight: Sex Trafficking Next Door. She is an Associate Professor at the Arizona State University School of Social Work and the founder and director of the ASU Office of Sex Trafficking Intervention Research. She leads initiatives working with partners including law enforcement, social service providers, and survivor support organizations. Dr. Roe-Sepowitz is the Clinical Director of Phoenix Starfish Place, a HUD funded supportive permanent housing program for sex trafficking women and their children. She is the Principal Investigator on a numerous state and federal grants and is a Co-Principal Investigator on a five-year National Science Foundation Grant exploring illicit networks that facilitate human trafficking. Dr. Roe-Sepowitz is on the editorial board of the Journal of Human Trafficking and has more than 35 peer review publications. Dr. Roe-Sepowitz was interviewed in the 2019 PBS Frontline documentary Sex Trafficking in America.

In conversation with Lesley, Angella shared her journey of balancing the sensibilities she developed as the product of two dynamically different cultures, her journey to independent personhood and the adventure of rising to be recognized as one of the world’s most respected female violinists. All of this leading her to Bozeman, Montana, where she is currently Associate Professor of Violin and Viola at Montana State University and where she was named both “Most Valuable Professor” and “Professor of the Month”. Angella starting playing at 6 yrs old, has performed in every state in the U.S., and over 30 countries. As a member of the Ahn Trio, she has played in the White House, the Jazz Dock in Prague, Buenos Aires’ Teatro Colon, Vienna’s Musikverein, New York's Lincoln Center, Leipzig's Gewandhaus, Beijing's Concert Hall, Istanbul's Aya Irini in Topkapi Palace, the iTunes Festival, and with her two sisters who form the Ahn Trio, on the TEDWomen stage. Angella also has an impressive discography with her trio. One of which won Germany’s prestigious ECHO Award. New York Newsday has called the trio “Classical revolutionaries.”

Have you ever dared to leap into the complete unknown to chase a dream?
This was the path of Jenna Ciralli, from the quiet prairies of Montana to NYC and back again. Lesley sat down with Jenna to discuss her life as an actress, writer. nominee for an Irene Ryan Award for her performance as Liz Morden in Timberlake Wertenberger's "Our Country's Good,” and founder of two NYC theater companies. Jenna credits this time with building her spine, teaching her how to produce her own work and build an artistic community.
In 2017 Jenna was a Webby Award Honoree for her YouTube film, "Casting Call | The Project" - a call to action for female-created content, which gained 2.4M views in its first 7 days. Jenna courageously intertwines her personal and acting lives to explore the power within the tension of our intrinsic opposites. This both fuels and informs her passion for giving women space and voice through film.
She shares her inspiring journey of learning to unapologetically balance the risks of jumping when both directions carry risk and each will have a cost. Something she met face-to-face when leaping from Montana to NYC.
Again, years later when she returned to Montana, and its blossoming film industry, fascinated with the great west. Jenna is a two-time Big Sky Grant recipient for two short films. "Willow Creek Road,” for which she was creator/lead actress and toured the film festival circuit. And the upcoming, “Homestead," which revisits the Western landscape through an interior feminine gaze.

Barbara Bentree joins Lesley to take WWSK listeners on a journey from rural Minnesota, into the heart of California’s music industry, and on to New Mexico as a budding film maker. Barbara Bentree is a multiple award-winning filmmaker and musician. She produced vocal music for "The New Mickey Mouse Club" television show for THE DISNEY CHANNEL. During her tenure she auditioned, cast and worked with Ryan Gosling, Justin Timberlake, Keri Russell, Britney Spears and Christina Aquilera to name a few.
Since coming to New Mexico, Barbara has developed her own original projects, all inspired by her desire to change the conversations about women, animals and the environment.
Barbara's feminist projects include her first film titled, "My Choice" which focuses on conversations among women who choose not to have children.
In partnership with Santa Fe NOW, Barbara created a series of intimate interviews with women about their abortion experiences titled, "Abortion Stories." This video was used to educate NM representatives during the past legislative session.
Barbara’s current film is the Feature documentary, "Dave Grusin: Not Enough Time".
Barbara is currently writing two original feminist stories to become books, podcasts and films. "Of Thee I Sing" and "Out Of Bounds". Both are rooted inBarbara's mission to help change the way young girls see and value themselves.
Pati Hernandez, Educator, Improvisationalist
“We all need rehabilitation,” is a belief that has guided Pati Hernandez’s life. Fearless curiosity about others has informed her clear understanding that “We cannot ignore our differences any more than we can ignore our privileges.” Joining Lesley, Pati discusses the value of diving into the muddiness and imperfection of life, and an examination of how we regularly contribute to the building of social walls. Ten years after living through the coup that took place in Chili when she was fourteen, Pati Hernandez flew to the US with a 1 way ticket and her backpack. Landing in New York’s Lower East Side, she worked with Latin American women in the areas of literacy and theater. Later taking her talents for what she calls “Serving the situation through art,” Pati worked with men in New Jersey’s largest correctional facility. Discovered by Dartmouth College’s Ivy Sweitzer, director of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Pati took her program to Dartmouth to create a program that introduced female college students with incarcerated women through improvisational theater. The documentary ‘It’s Criminal’ is based on this work.
As a multi-award winning filmmaker, with an education in Neuroscience and Microbiology and sixteen years in stem cell research in Sweden, Christi Cooper PhD has a passion for making the world a better, healthier place. Join Lesley as Christy leads her through the journey of discovering the world of climate change, and the youth who are leading the charge for a commitment to change, from the highest seats in, U.S. government, to include governments around the world. An Emmy-award winning cinematographer with a Ph.D. in Neuroscience and an MS in Microbiology, Christi communicates complex issues through storytelling and visual narrative to create human connection and impact around the most pressing issues of our time. She left a successful academic and research career in Europe to obtain an MFA in Science & Natural History Filmmaking. In 2011, Christi co-created Stories of TRUST: Calling for Climate Recovery, a 10-part documentary series featuring youth plaintiffs suing their state governments over climate change, with WITNESS, a social justice/human rights organization focused on using film for social change. She most recently directed and produced the feature documentary “YOUTH v GOV.” Christi is the inaugural SFFilm/Vulcan Productions Environmental Film Fellow and the first Jacob Burns Film Center Focus on Nature Artist-in-Resident.
On today’s podcast Lesley is joined by Kristy LaMariana as they discuss how essential it is that, as women, we connect with the power of our own sexuality. We are taught from a young age to relate, exclusively through our sexuality, be this through overt training or subtle messaging. Kristy speaks on how restrictive training around sexuality, has and is still having, a negative effect on women, which is overflowing onto men’s understanding of their own sexuality. She illustrates how we are living through a pandemic but we are also living through a porndemic. Through her beautifully judgment-free delivery Kristy shares understanding around the effects of our cultural perceptions of sexuality and how to move beyond these to develop a greater state of self-love and self-esteem.
Kristy Ross-LaMariana is a Sage Support~Mamapreneur & Holistic Guide~Founder/CEO, Author Born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1969 Kristy was raised in Northern Virginia (McLean) outside of Washington DC. She later ventured off to Virginia Wesleyan College, now University, receiving her bachelors of science in sociology with minors in psychology and art. This was followed by receiving her masters of science in Art Psychotherapy from the Eastern Virginia Medical School.
After graduating, she moved to New York where she spent time cultivating her medicine bag with the wisdom she gleaned from studying the MARI card test in Maine (a mandala assessment tool used in Art Therapy), Eriksonian clinical hypnotherapy with a teacher who studied personally with Milton Erickson, Yoga, Native American shamanism, life after life, death, dying, loss and grief. Kristy became a Reiki Master and a Non-Denominational Interfaith Minister while studying with teachers who were in on the ground level of The Course In Miracles.
Her earliest clients gave her the opportunity and honor to learn about porn/sex addiction and women’s rights and the importance of body mind soul care.
Kristy was later honored to study life after life with Dr. Raymond Moody (he coined the term the near-death experience [nde]). Kristy studied to become a Firewalk instructor, ultimately leading corporate firewalks.
She had four boys over nine years and as they got older her entrepreneurial spirit was inspired to write a book and invent a product specifically designed to support women in developing a healthy self-image in respect to their sexuality. Her book is titled “O’Wakening.” Her product is called O’flo and The O’Waken Foundation is her social/non-profit organization.
