44% of knee pain has its origin elsewhere.Do you know anyone with knee pain? It feels like there are so many people who just kind of program themselves for it. It’s ‘part of getting old’ for them. So of course, the body listens.

We already know that even when there’s actual, mechanical damage, knee pain is not the guaranteed result. And we also know that even when there is pain, it can be managed and improved with many holistic techniques, so surgery or injections are far from the only solution. And of course, sometimes the knees are not even the cause of knee pain…

Ron Clinton is a physiotherapist with 35 years of experience and an authority on all things knees and spine. He helps people identify and deal with the root causes of their pain and often resolves even the most difficult cases without the need for surgery.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • Why being diagnosed with osteoarthritis is not an automatic sentence to a life of pain.
  • Why it’s so important to examine a person holistically and not just focus on the joint that hurts.
  • How spine issues become knee issues, and how to approach that.
  • Hands-on work: The questions you can ask yourself to quickly figure out what might be causing your pain.

“There are very trusted brands whose supplements are very mediocre, to say the least.”If you had asked me a decade ago what I thought about supplements, I’d probably say that they’re unnecessary, because a well-planned diet should provide you with pretty much everything that you need (with perhaps one or two exceptions). I now understand that my thinking was at least a bit idealistic, if not totally wrong. Yes – a perfect diet should provide you with pretty much everything you need. But a perfect diet does not exist. And my own thinking about supplements has changed a lot over the years.

One thing that hasn’t changed is my belief that you should be able to do your own research and understand what you’re taking, and why.

But it can be hard to know where to start and who to trust in the supplement industry.

Jerry Sever is the Chief Operating Officer at Complement, a supplement brand that evolved primarily to fulfill the needs of people on plant-centric diets, where he’s responsible for research, development and production of new products. He also happens to be my husband, so I know first-hand how much work they put into developing quality supplements, and also into being transparent with their customers.

This episode is not about promoting their products, though. Knowing what kind of insights Jerry can offer, we dove deep into things that most people don’t know about the supplement industry, but which can definitely help you make better choices.

Here’s what you’ll learn in this interview:

  • What to look for when choosing a brand of supplements
  • What are some of the essential quality procedures they should follow (and disclose)
  • Whether organic supplements are always better than regular
  • What are some of the things you should look for (and avoid) when checking labels
  • What are some of the things that aren't as scary as they seem

You may lose parts of your physical body – but you are still you.Many/most people build their identity around their bodies. That is normal and natural – the body is the physical YOU. But what if you have an accident where the end result means that you lose a limb or two or three? Who are you then? Please know that you may lose parts of your physical body – but you are still you. This is a hard lesson for most people to even think about, even though we have come a long way in normalizing disability and amputees. And speaking of things that are hard to think about – how about dying?

Dr. Bruce (BJ) Miller has vast experience with both. As a triple amputee since age 19, he’s lived through the positive changes in society, worked with other amputees, and knows how important it is to navigate through everything that losing limbs brings, both mentally, emotionally and physically. And as a palliative care physician, he’s witnessed thousands of people face their death, and he’s one of the leading voices in reframing our discourse and views of dying.

In this deep, vitally important talk, you’ll discover:

  • Ways you can manage ‘phantom pains and sensations’ in body parts that are no longer functioning or you have lost.
  • How to face everyday struggle and turn it around.
  • Why pity will cause you problems, but empathy will empower you.
  • How to cope with different kinds of loss so that you can still live your life to the fullest.

Balance is always important. Especially when healing.

To keep things flowing smoothly it’s important to have balance. Focusing more on one thing and forgetting or ignoring others creates a situation that is not harmonious – and this can cost you greatly further down the road.

Balancing energies has been a big area of focus in Eastern medicines for thousands of years. It’s something that isn’t really talked about in our evidence-based Western medicine, but is crucial in, for example, Traditional Chinese Medicine. And when we speak of balance, this also applies to how we combine and use the techniques each of these approaches offers.

This is an interesting and important point that Dr. Felicia Yu, an integrative medicine physician with a specialty in traditional Chinese medicine and culinary medicine, brings up in this talk – that Western and Eastern medicine can be viewed as the Yang and the Yin, which also means that knowing when to use one approach, and when to look to the other is essential.

In this interview, you’ll discover:

  • What are the blind spots of Western medicine and how Eastern medicine can complement your healing.
  • How yin and yang energy affect your recovery.
  • Different modalities that can help you resolve chronic and acute pain.
  • Hands-on work: 4 acupressure points to keep your energy flowing.

We need to be our own best cheerleader.Sure, we all have down moments and sometimes it’s hard to do that. But constantly only relying on others to tell you what to do, how to think, where to go, what to choose, how to do things, can leave you in confusion, fear, and disappointment. I truly believe that each and every one of us already possesses all the answers that we need in any kind of situation and with any kind of challenge. The problem is that many forget how to listen to that tiny voice within, or can’t hear it because they fill their minds with external stuff from social media, TV, newspapers, magazines – and to hear it, it’s necessary to have some quiet time.

Because we all have the capacity to heal – but we need to get in touch with it.

And through my own healing journey and through working with other injured people, I’ve developed my Mindful Injury Recovery Method, but I’ve also learned that to apply it in the best way, you have to ask the right questions.

These are things that I ask people when working with them one on one, but you should definitely be asking them yourself whenever you’re faced with an injury, even if it seems something unimportant.

In this solo episode with yours truly, Dr. Maya Novak, you’ll discover:

  • What is your inner healing power and how to release it.
  • About Dr. Maya’s unique approach to healing and why it works so well.
  • What is The Mindful Injury Recovery Method and how to use it to your advantage.
  • The 5 questions to explore that will help you turn things around fast.

Whatever happened to you, you shouldn’t be diminishing your own experience, or downtalking your trauma.Broken ankle, broken back, a tendon tear, those are all very general descriptions of what happens to us, but as with anything, the details are what matters.

Comparing one injury to another and then doubting yourself if you’re healing well since someone else is progressing so fast is just not a good thing to do. Comparison can cut your motivation, put your mind into a negative place, let you ride that nasty emotional roller-coaster for too long, and it can affect your healing as well.

But what to do if you find yourself comparing yourself with others? There are ways that pretty much any experience can be turned into a growth opportunity, and this goes double for injuries.

Dr. James Gordon is an expert in using mind-body medicine to heal depression, anxiety, and psychological trauma, published author, and creator of programs of mind-body healing for physicians, medical students, and other health professionals. And in this really important talk, we explore how you can always find things to be grateful for, and things that will positively affect your mental state, and in turn, your physical health.

In this amazing episode, you’ll discover:

  • Why the overwhelming feelings you are experiencing right now might not be caused by injury-related trauma.
  • How comparison can negatively affect your recovery and what to do instead.
  • What makes an attitude of gratitude one of the many small important steps you need to be taking right now.
  • Hands-on work: deep breathing calming exercise.

Can you really heal with just the power of thoughts? The answer probably depends on how you approach this. If you just think very hard about healing, it probably won’t do much for you (and if you’re focused on your injury, it might even make things worse). But there is definitely power in your thoughts to change your health and your life. We’ve known it for a long time, and science is now slowly catching up to this.

That’s why I like hosting people who can take this subject, which so many still think is just pseudoscience, and very clearly explain all the evidence we already possess that our thoughts do have a direct effect on our bodies. And Dr. Dawson Church, energy psychology expert, best-selling author, and founder of the National Institute for Integrative Healthcare is a great guest to do just that.

In this interesting interview, you’ll discover:

  • How your thoughts affect your physical body and recovery.
  • Easy steps for learning energy healing and how to use it on yourself.
  • How your genes affect your healing and how to turn on those that positively affect your recovery.
  • Hands-on work: tapping session for creating a positive shift in your mind and body.

Nothing happens without intention.

It was summer 2010, a couple of months before I met my husband, when I was enjoying a long weekend with a bunch of friends on a sailboat on the Adriatic Sea. One of them was reading a book with what I though a weird title: ‘Ask and It Is Given’. Even though it was weird I was intrigued, got the book upon returning home, dove into it, started implementing what I discovered and at the end of summer met the love of my life; even though I had to say that I gave up on love all together after so many heartbreaks and difficult relationships.

What does this have to do with this interview? The book is about the Law of Attraction and manifesting, and manifesting is the intention that brings results. Not in the sense that you make something happen just by sitting around and wishing for it to be true. It’s that belief that moves you, and the world around you, in ways that we’re still just learning how to understand.

Lana Shlafer is a mindset coach and law of attraction expert who works with people who have reached an upper limit with what they believe they can create in life, and continuously helps them go beyond those limits. In this talk with her, we explore not just how she does that, but also what brought her to it (from investment banking, of all possible past careers), and the obstacles she overcame along the way.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • How the right questions get you unstuck in your recovery and life.
  • What to do when you start thinking worst-case scenario thoughts and how to snap out of them.
  • How to empower yourself to break the upper limit you created for yourself.
  • What to do to put yourself into healing vibration.

Tapping should probably be in everyone’s recovery toolbox.

If there’s one thing that I’ve heard from injured women and men countless times it’s this: “I’m so frustrated with this!” Whether with lack of progress or not progressing quickly enough, people around them not understanding them, or just being plain angry and frustrated with themselves for getting into this situation. It’s normal to experience a rainbow of emotions on a daily basis, the problem begins when we’re bathing in the negative emotions day in and day out. It can start affecting not only just our mood but our health and healing as well.

Tapping can really help you out – and it’s probably one of those tools that is great to have in your recovery toolbox. It’s one of those techniques that can be learned quickly by anyone and used almost anywhere, to address almost any kind of issue. And while it seems really simple, it’s actually based on the knowledge behind acupuncture, which has been around for thousands of years.

In this interview, Brad Yates, the internationally renown Emotional Freedom Techniques expert and best-selling author whose YouTube videos have been viewed millions of times, returns for another talk on the principles behind tapping and ways that you can use it to make healing easier.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • How the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) works for clearing your limiting beliefs.
  • Why self-sabotage is a learned process and how you can turn this around with tapping.
  • What are habitual negative emotions and how you can deal with them.
  • Hands-on work: tapping session for releasing lingering fear.

Fasting can be really helpful when done right... and really bad for you when done wrong. It must have been in my very late teens or early 20s when I did my first fast. It lasted 3 days and as many people would confirm, the first 36 hours are the worst. And then – things got easy, or easier. After three days I kind of had to force myself to start eating again because I completely lost my appetite. If I could go back to that time I’d do things differently, but wise decisions usually come with life experiences.

Fasting is a useful tool, but it is one of those that really needs proper guidance and supervision. And rest!

With my first fast there were some mistakes that I made but resting wasn’t one of them. This is something that I’ve seen people do so many, too many times. They just stop eating for a period of time without any other changes. Without eliminating the stress or just keeping it very low, without skipping their workouts, without taking it easy.

Dr. Alan Goldhamer, Director of the True NorthHealth Cente is board-certified in fasting supervision and has 40+ years of experience with guiding people through fasting and helping them adjust their diet and lifestyle to truly maximize the health benefits. If you’ve ever wondered how fasting can help your body and healing, this conversation is a great resource.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • Why and how what you eat affects your body’s ability to heal.
  • When water-only fasting could be appropriate for you – and when it’s definitely not.
  • How ketosis and keto diet affect your ability to heal.
  • What intermittent fasting is and how it can benefit you and your body.

We all remember 2020, don’t we?

How could we forget days that turned into weeks that turned into months and then into years of fear, confusion, anger, mistrust, and doubts. Some people coped better, other people not so well. That situation forced all of us to sit with our feelings, thoughts, and loneliness.

To say that it was difficult is an understatement. While I was observing this craziness I couldn’t help but say quite a few times: “All people around the world are experiencing very similar things that injured people go through every day.”

When you injure yourself – especially if we talk about serious injuries – your life changes from one day to another. You cannot do things you love to do, you cannot move freely, and you’re not suffering just physically but psychologically as well. These are challenging times.

But even when people are forced to be still, they still don’t like looking inside themselves, and it’s because it can be a messy place. But it’s also the place where most answers and most healing comes from. So even if it’s messy, it can be so worth it. It really helps having some sort of guidance and this can come in a form of another person, or it can be a higher power, or even simple faith. Actually, what works best for many people is a mix of all three.

That guidance can be another person, or it can be a higher power, or even simple faith. Or a mix of all three – which is what this interview with Abby Wynne, a healer who blends shamanism, psychotherapy, and energy healing, is all about.

In this healing talk, you’ll discover:

  • What shamanism is and how it can help you on this recovery journey.
  • Which techniques to use to help your body heal effortlessly.
  • What is the difference between sadness and depression and how knowing this can change everything for you.
  • How to address your emotional healing when you experience injury or trauma, particularly if you are feeling sad and/or depressed.

What if we all carry some anxiety? What if this is something that all humans have in common with the only difference that the source and level, and the way we deal with it, is different? Yes, some of us are more resilient, and some of us are less – but unexpected life events like injuries can throw anyone off balance, and if you’re not used to listening to your anxiety, it can get a lot worse in such situations. And the sad part is that is can end up very strongly affecting your life.

So to nip problems in the bud is a better way, but even those events that seem unmanageable can be resolved.

Dr. Friedemann Schaub, the award-winning author of The Fear and Anxiety Solution, views it as something that needs to be tackled on all levels, but especially by going into the buried roots that we might be less aware of. With thousands of success stories from people he has helped, this discussion gives a truly great insight into how anxiety is formed and stored, and how we can address it.

In this interview, you’ll discover:

  • Why physical trauma and traumatic experience overthrow people so badly and how you can help yourself.
  • How fear and anxiety interfere with your healing, but also how anxiety can be a helper and how to make it work for you.
  • What are the subconscious root causes of negative emotions.
  • Hands-on work: guided meditation to help you release fear and anxiety.

It’s really hard to go wrong by eating more plants.

No matter what kind of nutrition research you look into, there’s one thing that most if not all researchers agree on: the more your diet includes whole foods and plants, the better it is for your health and healing.

I can agree that my own recovery was definitely a lot better because of the food I was eating. And truth be told, my doctor and physiotherapist couldn’t believe how little swelling I had, and my diet definitely played a big role in this. But even if you’re not injured, plants can provide the kind of nutrition that’s hard to get from other sources.

In this talk with Olympic skier and registered holistic nutritionist, Julia Murray, we focused heavily on the hows and whys of plant-based food for healing. While Julia herself discovered this only after ending her professional career due to injuries, what she accomplished afterwards probably wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for her knowledge of proper nutrition.

In this interview, you’ll discover:

  • What kind of role diet and nutrition play in your recovery.
  • How gut microbiome affects inflammation and what you can do to minimize its effects.
  • Which supplements can be beneficial to take while you are recovering from an injury.
  • What is the downside of rushing the recovery and what to do instead.

You have a healer inside.

I truly believe that each of us knows exactly what we need in order to heal when we get sick or end up with any kind of physical trauma. The problem is that people are either led to believe this is not the case or they overcomplicate things and then they become their own biggest obstacle.

We all have an incredible healing potential and there’s a powerful healer within each of us.

It’s definitely important to get external help such as getting surgery, or a splint when necessary, but the real process of healing starts after that stabilization when you need to look within and connect with the part of you that already knows how to do – how to heal.

That, in a nutshell, is the message of Dr. Sue Morter, the founder of the Morter Institute for BioEnergetics. Coming from a family of energy healers, Sue was destined to carry on this work that blends her clinical background and new discoveries of quantum healing with the ancient knowledge of yogic breathing, meditation, and energy work.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • The different modalities of energy medicine, and how to make the most of them in your healing.
  • Practical exercises that you can do now to slow your mind down and work with your body from top to bottom to make it the healing center it is designed to be.
  • How to ‘work’ with your body during injury and illness for incredible results.
  • Hands-on work: creating a healing energy flow session.

We often think healing trauma that’s buried deep is hard – but it doesn’t need to be.

Sometime in 2011, I had my first experience with hypnotherapy. I was positive that the therapist would hypnotize me to the point of me being kind of unconscious and then after everything was done I’d be cured and I definitely wouldn’t be able to remember anything. How wrong I was. And it was only a couple of years ago, when I was studying to become a clinical hypnotherapist that I realized how that therapist didn’t really prepare me for the session and what is actually happening during the time when a person is in hypnosis.

I really like the potential of hypnotherapy because the subconscious mind is so powerful and it can help you tremendously when healing any kind of trauma, injuries included. And because there always are deeper levels to discover and heal, if you’re willing to look for them.

Danna Pycher realized that after a car accident that led to her having to relearn how to walk, but also left her unsure of everything she had been sure of up until that point. So she turned inwards to heal, and in the process discovered hypnotherapy, which drew her so much that she’s now a hypnotherapist herself, as well as a motivational speaker whose TEDx talk has been viewed nearly 3 million times.

In this interview, you’ll discover:

  • Why and how any shock to your body needs to be processed and resolved for best recovery outcome.
  • What you absolutely need to look into when dealing with pain.
  • Which feeling you need to be experiencing the most for you to be able to heal with ease.
  • Hands-on work: a rapid healing technique for dissipating discomfort.

Healing from within means looking at the whole picture. That doesn’t mean that healing with external help can’t do the same – but it often misses things, and looks at symptoms and specific body parts or organs, rather than the whole body-mind-spirit being that we are. So the best healing with external help will actually mean helping you get to the point where you can heal from within.

That’s what Elena Bensonoff, the founder of Wholistic, Inc. does for her clients. Equipped with the knowledge she first gained when healing her own chronic issues, she now blends conventional medicine with holistic techniques to guide them to true and complete healing.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • What energy healing is and why it’s crucial to your recovery.
  • The true connection between thoughts, emotions and the physical body, and how these affect your healing.
  • About the importance of taking control and self-responsibility in your healing.
  • Why having a healthy gut is so important for the recovery and how to balance your microbiome.

We would be in a lot of trouble without pain.

Say that again?Yes, even though this might seem impossible, it’s true. In its acute form, pain can keep us from harm, teach us what (not) to do, and slow us down when we need to heal.

But on the other hand, chronic pain is a completely different thing, and it’s really linked more to our brain than it is to any actual damage in the physical body.

Dr. David Hanscom arrived at these conclusions in a really interesting way – as a spine surgeon, who realized that the procedures he was performing actually have an incredibly low success rate, and at the same time, that his approach to work was actually causing considerable adverse reactions in his own body. His approach now is very different from what he used to be doing – and also a lot more effective.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • How your brain chemistry contributes to feelings of chronic pain.
  • Why anxiety is primarily not a psychological issue and how you can resolve it.
  • A simple three-step solution to help you become free from chronic pain.
  • What is active meditation and how it will help you resolve persistent pain.

Injury recovery can be even more painful if you’re an active person or athlete. It’s true that no matter the level of activity, every person who is injured suffers. This is because it’s not only our physical body that gets affected but our emotional and mental ones as well.

And when it comes to athletes (or just very active people), sometimes we might think “They’re fine,” right? Because they already know how to deal with difficult situations, for example when hitting a ceiling with their progress or how to find motivation to keep going.

Even though this might be true to a degree, and it might help a bit, in my experience any type of injury gets us unprepared and even though we think we knew how to get through this, there are nuances that we just didn’t expect.

So, yes, perhaps your body might be in better shape overall, but when you get hurt, being unable to move like you’re used to can lead to mental and emotional suffering. Period. And on the other hand, pushing too hard so you can get back to your active lifestyle can turn out to not be so beneficial.

Heidi Armstrong, the founder of Injured Athlete’s Toolbox, was drawn into injury recovery coaching the same way I was – through her own injury, and the realization that there are better ways of supporting injured people than what she herself received, especially when it comes to the mind-body connection and creating the best possible conditions for healing.

In this interview, you’ll discover:

  • How to choose the right team of health practitioners to support your recovery.
  • What to do to start engaging your parasympathetic nervous system to help you heal better and faster.
  • How your negative emotions affect your recovery and what to do to change them.
  • Why ‘taking it easy’ during recovery can be stressful, especially for active people, and how to address the underlying reasons.

Even when the source of pain seems obvious, it might not be.When figuring out the physical reasons for pain in the body, it’s easy to fall into the trap of viewing the affected body part separately from the rest. But sometimes, the source can be quite far away – an injured foot, ankle, or even toe can lead to issues with the hips, lower back, and all the way up to the neck and head. And that one is simpler to figure out.

In this second conversation with Erica Meloe, a board-certified physiotherapist and author of the book Why Do I Hurt?, we talk about the sources of pain, ways we can discover them, and way to treat them so they don’t return.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • Why the traditional approach to physical recovery is often not enough for great recovery.
  • How to find the root cause of pain – many times not what you think it is.
  • What to do to avoid compensation so that you don’t experience other physical problems after your injury.
  • How different emotions are connected to different body parts and how this affects your healing.

Perfectionism can be painful. We all have an incredible healing potential – the problem is that we very often forget about it. Sometimes that is because we give our power away and just wait for others to tell us what we need to do or not to do, and other times it’s because we get so caught up in our emotional and mental turmoil that it’s hard for us to remember this.

When we’re too hard on ourselves and expect too much of the body (especially if the body was hurt or isn’t working as it should), it can create energy blockages that can lead to slower healing and more pain.

That’s just one of the things covered in this talk with Amy B. Scher, an energy therapist whose book How to Heal Yourself When No One Else Canhas been translated into 13 languages. Energy healing involves truly figuring out the deep reasons behind injuries and pain, and in this discussion, we go deep into this process.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • What is one of the first things that you need to look into when there is really slow healing, or if there is no healing after an injury.
  • How other traumatic experiences affect healing from an injury.
  • Why the healing process is so often frustrating and what to do about it.
  • Hands-on work: a powerful sweep technique that will change your healing journey.

Pain is often optional.

You just have to know how to treat it.

Eileen Kopsaftis, a manual therapist who focuses strongly on pain, has made multiple appearances on The Mindful Injury Recovery Talks – there are two other discussions for you to check (Episode 2 and Episode 31). In this interview, we went into detail about things that we can address with proper physical therapy and lifestyle adjustments so we can avoid pain medication, or potentially life-altering procedures or addictions.

In this interview, you’ll discover:

  • How the right physical therapy can save you weeks, months, or years of suffering.
  • Which meds can cause more pain and which painkillers might not be as effective as we hope they are.
  • How to reduce inflammation and pain naturally.
  • What to do when you’ve already ‘tried everything’ without much success.

When it comes to food, it’s nutrients, not calories that really count.

‘Calories in – calories out’ is the motto of most fitness enthusiasts and those who want to lose weight. But there are things that are way more important than only calories – the nutrients. And not just the ‘macros’ popularized by gym culture, you know, carbs, protein, and fat – it’s micronutrients that matter.

When we talk about health and healing it’s important that we focus on those (as well as getting enough calories in so that the body can recover). Because remember, healing an injury, especially a difficult one is not the time for any diets.

Dr. Joel Fuhrman has been at the forefront of the nutritarian approach to eating for decades - and besides being a six-times NYT best-selling author, he’s advised professional and Olympic athletes, lectured to athletic trainers, and world-class athletes about maximizing performance in preventing injury.

In this detailed talk about eating for true health and ‘play-span’, you’ll discover:

  • In what ways the diet differs for people who are injured in those who are not.
  • How to make a dietary plan for your recovery.
  • What to do when you’re diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis after a fracture.
  • What combination works really well for the patients who suffer from fibromyalgia.
  • How to avoid tendon pain and complications by taking care of diet.

Just like your physical or emotional body, your relationship can also suffer as a result of injury.

We like to zoom in on so many things, right? When there’s an injury, doctors zoom in and focus just on that one specific part that is injured and most people play along. When a person is experiencing anxiety after an accident, they zoom in and convince themselves that their anxiety is only a result of their accident. When there’s pain, they zoom in on the injury as well.

But this life is a complex thing and understanding the big picture is important.

And in the same way, we cannot only zoom in and focus on that one specific injured body part, ignoring the whole person, we cannot zoom in and focus just on the individual in this situation because their loved ones are involved as well, and the relationships can suffer, too. It’s actually very common, and it has a lot to do with our levels of openness, intimacy, and how connected we are with ourselves – and our sexual energy.

In this no-subject-barred talk with Claudia Omland, who is a love and sex coach helping women create their dream relationships, we explore how sexual energy can feed into most of the things we do, including healing. (Please note that this one is definitely for mature audiences only.)

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • What does sexual energy have to do with healing from physical injuries.
  • How closing yourself can slow down your healing and how to change this.
  • How you can tap into your sexual energy and use it for healing.
  • Why is working on receiving (help, for example) and being open so important for incredible healing.

One thing is absolutely true – and that is that you’re a unique human being.

And even though we’re all in one way or another aware of this, we still allow in a way to be crammed into a cookie cutter approach when we’re faced with injuries or chronic pain (or pain that just appears ‘out of nowhere’).

Mags Clark-Smith is a pain relief movement specialist, author and university lecturer with a diverse background that spans from psychology and non-verbal communication, to theater and dance. With her approach to treating pain through movement (and focusing on the uniqueness of each person), she has a number of seemingly miraculous healing stories she can share, and also a very important message.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • Why your pain is not just in your head and how to resolve it.
  • What to do when you experience unexplained pain and doctors can’t help you.
  • How our belief system affects the level of pain we experience.
  • What steps you need to take to resolve pain.

Physiotherapy, if done wrong, can hurt you. There are people who love physical manipulations done by physiotherapists and chiropractors and believe this is the way to go, and there are those who prefer to avoid it because cracking and popping is just not their thing. I’m in the latter group – mostly because of the things that I’ve learned over decades.

There are some methods, especially things like osteopathic and chiropractic manipulations that can cause severe damage.

I’ve been aware of this for a long time, so I’m glad that I could sit down with Tom Ockler to really dive into the details of this topic that can literally save lives. Tom is an internationally recognized physical therapist, teacher, and author who’s been running his practice for over 20 years, and uses a neuromuscular approach, which means he’s never resorting to manipulation.

In this interview, which is essential for understanding physical therapy, you’ll discover:

  • How a non-traditional approach to physical therapy can help you heal better.
  • About trigger points and why they so often cause problems later on after an injury.
  • What to do when the pain doesn’t want to go away.
  • Hands-on work: tapping session for reducing/eliminating stubborn pain.

‘Dying’ is probably the absolute worst-case scenario of any health issue. There are those people who believe that nothing happens after death, because it’s the end, and then there are those who believe that we either go to heaven or hell, or some other form of afterlife. Who’s right and what is the truth for each and every one of us is something we’ll only know when we experience it.

But no matter what we believe, there are many individuals who died and returned back to life – who had a near-death experience.

This is what happened to Cheri Aimée who faced death not just once, but twice – and the second time, she actually flat-lined for 90 minutes before returning to life.

She had to relearn not just how to live, but how to walk, but what she discovered along the way was a power that each of us actually has within us, and which can lift you from pretty much any depth, if you can tap into it.

In this very interesting talk with Cheri, you’ll discover:

  • How to go from ‘it’s probably impossible for me…’ to ‘yes, it can absolutely happen’.
  • Why doctors couldn’t believe her incredible progress and how you can apply this approach to incredible healing as well.
  • What lessons might be behind our accidents.
  • How her near-death experience can help you on this healing journey.

Depending on who you listen to, almost any food can either heal you or make you worse.Food and nutrition might be the most confusing topic of all. There’s so much different information available that it’s very easy to just throw your arms up in the air and go, “I give up. I really don’t know who to believe.” I understand this because sometimes it seems impossible to figure out the facts with so many conflicting views and so much conflicting research on the topic of nutrition.

But for millions of people worldwide, Dr. Michael Greger does just that with his Nutrition Facts website where he presents the newest research and addresses controversies in a light-hearted, easy-to-understand way, but always supported with solid data.

He’s also a New York Times best-selling author, an internationally recognized speaker on nutrition, food safety, and public health issues.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • How to prevent or heal osteoarthitis with the help of specific foods.
  • How to prevent blood clots after surgery or when you’re bedridden.
  • About the most common supplement that doctors prescribe – but can actually be harmful.

If everything has its frequency, is there a frequency for healing different parts of the body? The way we perceive our reality is as if every object or person is a solid thing. How could it not be? If it weren’t we wouldn’t be able to tear a piece of paper, or cut down a tree and even injuries wouldn’t be possible, right? But when we start breaking down the tissues, cells, the cells’ organelles, and we get down to atoms and subatomic matter we realize that most of the space is empty and that energy and frequency is what drives everything. So no wonder that sound can actually heal.

You might be familiar with different states of consciousness (alpha, beta, delta, theta) and how they can be stimulated with binaural beats. But what Dr. Jeffrey Thompson does is a few steps beyond.

He’s the founder and director of the Center for Neuroacoustic Research in Carlsbad, California, and the creator of Bio-Tuning modality, with which he can actually discover the frequency of your own body and use it to target any of its systems to promote healing.

In this talk with Dr. Jeffrey, you’ll discover:

  • How sounds can not only help you heal physically, but also emotionally and mentally.
  • Which sounds are the best for which type of injury / healing.
  • How to fall asleep easily even if you have trouble doing that after an injury/accident.
  • What to do to speed up the healing process.

Tapping feels like one of those things that shouldn’t work, but do.Of course, a lot of the things that are covered on this podcast fall in that category. But I remember first learning about it and not being quite sure how or why this would work. But it does, and it can be an invaluable tool when you’re healing.

Imagine every doctor you see telling you, “We can’t help you. You’ll never get better.” I remember lying in the hospital back in 2012 when I received my diagnosis and prognosis. Neither of these two looked promising and by the words of my doctors I should have said goodbye to the life I had known thus far.

Brain injuries are scary for most people.

And the sad part is that they are often undiagnosed and unrecognized so more people (not just the injured ones but their families as well) suffer for way longer.

Every injury is challenging in its own way. I know that many people have the tendency to compare their physical traumas or downtalk them and say “Well, I shouldn’t be complaining since so and so has it worse.” There will always be someone who has it worse but that doesn’t mean that your trauma doesn’t matter or that you don’t matter. You do!

I love talking with people who have all sorts of injuries because it helps me understand their challenges better, which also makes practicing compassion and understanding way easier.

Still, people wonder – if the brain is broken, are you still you? And even if you believe in the power of the mind-body connection, how does it work if your mind might not be working as it should?

Nathalie Kelly faced all these questions after suffering a brain injury in a sailing accident. But as a hypnotherapist, she knew that the brain is capable of growth and healing, and realized that she could make herself better – she just needed to find the right approach. After engineering her own miraculous recovery, she now helps other people overcome brain injuries, and this interview is truly important for understanding them better.

In this amazing talk, you’ll discover:

  • Why recovering from a traumatic brain injury can be possible, despite a prognosis that may say otherwise.
  • What is a heart-body connection and why it’s important in helping with recovery.
  • What kind of role your emotions play in healing and how they can help you bounce forward in life.

Anxiety is not necessarily fear.Over the years, talking with hundreds of injured people around the world – one thing became very clear to me. A lot of injured women and men who are experiencing anxiety that started after they sustained their injury are sure that their recent physical trauma is the cause of this.

In my experience, for a majority of people that’s not the case because anxiety is the result of previous, different kinds of trauma, that just weren’t dealt with.

This is just one of the reasons why I wanted to talk about this topic with Amy B Scher, an energy therapist, expert in mind, body, spirit healing, and published author who’s been featured on CNN, The Washington Post, CBS, Cosmopolitan, and more. Her down-to-earth approach is a combination of all the things she had to learn to heal herself from, in her own words, every imaginable condition under the sun. She’s now using those learnings to help her clients find the missing pieces that are causing their physical and emotional problems.

In this interview, you’ll discover:

  • The difference between fear and anxiety and why people usually confuse them.
  • What is the true source of anxiety you might be experiencing right now.
  • How little tweaks help with your emotional and physical health during recovery and which ones work the best.

What’s better – knowing what to do, or knowing what not to do?

I’m still amazed when I hear stories from people whose doctors don’t even prescribe physiotherapy after an injury, because when it comes to recovery, there’s an enormous amount of value in knowing what to do – and also knowing what to avoid doing.

Of course, physiotherapy goes beyond that, especially when you’re working with a good therapist. In this talk with Erica Meloe, a board-certified physiotherapist and author of the book Why Do I Hurt? (and, in a past career, a Wall Street trader), we dive into all of the things that help you get the most out of physical therapy.

You’ll discover:

  • How to distinguish between good pain and bad pain during recovery.
  • The 3 important questions to ask when choosing the right physiotherapist for your injury.
  • How integrating imagery and mindfulness with physiotherapy can help you regain movement and eliminate pain.

Popping pills isn’t always a bad thing.

I’m a huge fan of getting your nutrients from whole food. But there are many reasons why that isn’t always ideal; the quality of food you can get (which can vary depending on location, time of year, etc.), the diversity, and of course, your body’s needs, which can vary based on your own makeup and conditions such as injuries. So nutritional supplements are often a valuable tool for maintaining (or regaining) your health.

But the question remains - which supplements and how to choose them? That is the topic of this talk with Dr. Pamela Fergusson, a registered dietician with a Ph.D. in nutrition who’s been helping people change their lives for over 20 years.

You’ll discover:

  • Which nutrients your body especially needs during injury recovery.
  • Getting the nutrients with food vs supplements (you might be surprised with this one).
  • Which supplements are necessary after an injury.
  • How foods that you eat can contribute to inflammation and consequently to pain and swelling and how to change that.

We often have a tendency to view the body as an opponent.

Or we even hate it when we think it’s preventing us from doing the things we want to be doing. And especially if we’re used to moving and enjoying what the body can do. So there can be a lot of frustration and anger after an injury, when all of that gets taken away – and that, too, even if sometimes difficult to understand at first, is an opportunity to grow.

Janine Shepherd went from being an athlete on her way to the Olympics, to being a paraplegic and bed-bound for 6 months after an accident. But she leaned into the adversity and didn’t just relearn how to walk – she learned to fly planes as well.

I was very excited to talk to her, not only because she has so much to offer but also because I watched a movie that was based on her story, called Never Tell Me Never, and her TED talk has been viewed more than 2 million times.

Don’t be surprised if you end up bookmarking this conversation to instil courage and motivation that can help you thrive in the face of adversity.

In this conversation on facing struggles, you’ll discover:

  • Where to find motivation and determination to keep on going even though things are rough.
  • Her 3 biggest lessons and how they can help you as well.
  • What tools and techniques to use for getting through the dark moments that any injury recovery journey has.
  • Why knowing how to stop and rest can be just as valuable as knowing how to keep going.

Looking very simplistically, your brain has only one job, and that is to keep you alive.Fear, as much as we don’t enjoy it, performs that function as well. It helps us remove ourselves from dangerous situations or not put ourselves into danger in the first place. But often (especially in our modern world) being afraid, or feeling anxious or depressed has nothing to do with dangerous situations. And in these instances, when we’re going through something difficult, it’s so important that we surround ourselves with people who understand us, support us, and can guide us through the jungle of the scary and unknown.

Arianna Gray is one of those people and I’m so glad that our paths crossed in 2016 when we met at a conference in Phoenix, Arizona. I’ve learned a lot from her and I’m sure you’ll discover things that you can implement in your life when you listen to this episode.

With over 20 years of work as a clinical hypnotherapist and mental health professional in addiction treatments, hospices, and family therapy, the life experience that she can share would be vast even before you add in her own personal lessons and the way she walks her talk, which is why I’m very happy we got to have this conversation.

In this wisdom-packed episode, you’ll discover:

  • What to do so that sadness after an injury doesn’t become depression and if it does, how to resolve it.
  • How to quickly pull yourself out of an anxiety attack.
  • Why taking advantage of this experience is so important for living a happy life.
  • Why pain is not the same as suffering.

Pain is something that way too many people are resigned to live with.

Or at best, live with while treating it with not very effective methods like anti-inflammatory drugs.

Most information that you can find on osteoarthritis says it can't be reversed because cartilage cannot regrow and thicken, and the treatment involves taking medication to help relieve the symptoms. This is the conventional medical view. I thought that was true as well but then probably five, six years ago I first came across information and research that showed it’s the opposite – that cartilage can thicken and can improve, it’s just that the process is usually slow.

Great news for those who suffer with this condition, isn’t it? Or those who tremble in fear that it might happen to them because of their injury. But what if there’s also a way to prevent it?

Eileen Kopsaftis has been practising physiotherapy for over 30 years, so she knows all about it – but her specialty is manual techniques that correct biomechanical imbalances in the body, alongside lifestyle changes that have been shown to improve conditions such as arthritis.

In this episode, where she joins me again, you’ll discover:

  • How to distinguish between good pain and bad pain during recovery.
  • What the new research on osteoarthritis shows and why you can potentially completely avoid it.
  • How cells in your body influence your perception of pain mentally and physically.
  • Why a mainstream approach to resolving chronic pain doesn’t work.

It takes courage and confidence to trust your intuition when it’s telling you to quit a career you spent years building. And it takes wisdom to know what that inner voice is trying to tell you when it’s time to heal so you can choose the right path.

Sometimes, it’s the simple things that are the hardest. And also most effective. For many of us, that split second, when we sustained our injuries, changed everything. But change, even though we many times prefer not to experience it, is not always bad. Sometimes we discover things, get into practices, and start listening to ourselves better because of that moment. And it’s true that the simple things that are the hardest are also most effective.Love and gratitude, as simple as they sound, are often so hard to practice, especially when things aren’t going right. But they make everything better – including recovery, whether it’s from physical injuries, sickness, or any other kind of trauma.

In this conversation with Koya Webb, love, gratitude, and connection (with the spirit, with others, and with your own self) are front and center, just the way they are in her work. The saying ‘Let food be thy medicine’ may be old... but it’s also true. One of the most common statements that many doctors say to their patients is “Your diet doesn’t play a role in this,” or “No, you don’t have to change your diet because of your condition.”Nutrition plays a huge role in healing and food played a significant role in my own recovery from my ankle fracture as well. Fighting pain away may not work, but thinking it away might. We’re always fighting so many things, aren’t we? We fight climate change, we fight diseases, and naturally we fight pain as well. But this is one of the reasons why so many people struggle for so long with it. Because fighting doesn’t work and pain is not something you need to conquer. But that’s exactly how most people approach it, even though there are better ways...

A lot of healing modalities not completely aligned with conventional medicine are often labeled as placebo. But when you think about it, the placebo effect – getting better and feeling less pain just because you believe this should happen – can actually be incredibly powerful.

That’s just one of the topics we touched on with Dr. Bahram Jam, the founder and director of Advanced Physical Therapy Education Institute, who’s also a pain educator with a doctorate in physical therapy.

And I can tell you that his passion is contagious. When you’re in the company of a person who loves their work it’s hard not to feel it. This is something I vividly remember from the conversation with Dr. Bahram Jam, where we covered the good, the bad, and the ugly things about pain.

In this amazing interview, you’ll discover:

  • How to distinguish between good pain and bad pain during recovery.
  • When should you be worried about nerve pain.
  • How a normally suggested protocol of RICE (rest-ice-compression-elevation) can harm your progress.
  • And also, why Dr. Bahram Jam wears different socks, and how this, too, relates to pain

Your body is always, always observing what’s happening in your mind. You can fool others but you cannot fool yourself or your body. Your mind affects your physical body and your body is always, always observing what’s happening in your mind. And it’s not just visualization that can greatly improve any recovery. At a more basic level, every thought you have can affect your physical body in either a positive, or, unfortunately, negative way. And that’s especially important when healing injuries or disease states.

Dr. Martin Rossman has been practicing medicine for over 50 years, and he’s been using acupuncture in his approach for just as long (in other words, almost since before the American Medical Association began to understand its benefits).

But it’s not just acupuncture – his approach relies heavily on mind-body healing, and guiding it through imagery.

In this interview, you'll discover:

  • What is neuroplasticity and why does it matter when it comes to your healing.
  • How your thoughts become molecules that then affect your body in a negative or positive way?
  • What imagery is and how to use it in your healing process.
  • How to change your perception so that you can heal in the most amazing way.

Kindness. It’s true that most people are much better at being kind to others than they are at being kind to themselves.Sometimes we think that we’re kind to ourselves, but when things get hard, or we don’t do something right, or we gain a bit of weight, when we stand in front of the mirror or sitting with our thoughts, we perhaps notice that we’re kind but only to a degree. Sometimes it’s hard to put what we know we should be doing into practice. And to go even a step further, when dealing with physical trauma (or mental/emotional, for that matter), we so often put ourselves into a sort of fight mode, where we’re actually treating the body (or mind) as an enemy to be beaten into submission.

Of course, even without that, trauma gets stored in the body. But with this approach, it becomes even harder to resolve it.

Cheri Clampett is the founder and director of the Therapeutic Yoga Training Program. For her, it was yoga that brought her back into a place of healing where you work with the body and mind, not against them, and she has been sharing these healing tools with others for over 25 years.

In this interview, you’ll discover:

  • Different techniques that help with healing.
  • How to soften around pain to reduce it tremendously without pain medication.
  • How to help your body through the power of your mind.
  • Hands-on work: meditation session for easily reducing (chronic) pain.

Your mind (conscious and subconscious) controls your actions. What if it controls your healing, too?At any moment during the day, you probably have dozens of subconscious processes that are running as much as 95% of your actions. But what if that goes even deeper than your actions? Your beliefs and your subconscious programming don’t just affect the way you act, but also the way you heal (or stay sick or in pain).

And Dr. Bruce Lipton is probably one of the best-known authorities on this connection.

He turned from stem cell biology to epigenetics when he realized that our genes don’t actually control our destiny. Bruce is a pioneer in bridging science and spirit, explaining things in a way that’s easy to understand for anyone, and his best-selling book, The Biology of Belief, is regarded as one of the leading voices of the new biology. And this interview goes deep into how he views the connection between our thoughts and our body, and what it means for your ability to heal.

In this interview, you’ll discover:

  • All about the power of your conscious and subconscious mind versus genetic factors in relation to your health and recovery.
  • What kind of roles your beliefs play in your healing efforts.
  • How body’s natural chemicals that either promote or hinder your progress are produced and released in your body.
  • How to create a recovered future for yourself even if you were programmed differently in your past.

Different types of vibration can be healing, but they can also be detrimental to your health. If you saw a device with a note attached that read: “Using this can (among other things) cause irreversible back pain, disc rupture and/or detached retina,” would you use it?

Probably not! And you’d make a very wise decision. However, countless people use such devices every single day without knowing how harmful they can be.

That’s why I think it’s very important to listen to the interview that I did with Dr. Clinton Rubin, who is the most cited researcher in the area of vibration therapy. He’s a SUNY Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Director of the Center for Biotechnology at Stony Brook University, and, in his own words, very opinionated when it comes to vibrations, and what helps and what not.

You’ll not only discover what to avoid, but also how your bones are formed and why, as we age, we can have more problems with bones (e.g. osteoporosis), muscles, and how come that it’s easier to gain more fat as years go by.

In this incredible interview, you’ll discover:

  • What exactly leads to bone loss and osteoporosis as we age.
  • The kind of vibration that is bad for your body (and which devices use it) – and the kind that is really, really good.
  • Why exercise is really, truly important, throughout your entire life.
  • How Dr. Rubin’s research led to an FDA-approved device that can increase bone density.

There were times, many years ago, when I didn’t completely understand why some injured people struggle and others don’t. I was wondering why sometimes the healing process feels like torture and other times as something that is completely doable. I became really curious how to help people by understanding the state they were in in those moments.

So throughout my years as a healing coach, as I tuned in and listened to countless women and men with physical trauma, I began identifying behavioral patterns that held people back in their healing process.

Based on these observations I created my model, The Mindful Injury Recovery Design. It helps you understand where you are in your healing journey and also what you need to do to arrive at your destination – it’s kind of a clear map of how to get from pain and suffering at point A to abundance and complete recovery at point Z.

My model consists of 4 spaces/rooms and in today’s episode, I explain in detail the characteristics of each space and in what kind of state – mental/emotional/physical – people are in when they’re in each of these spaces. This model has shown to be very helpful not just for individuals, but also medical professionals who want to understand their patients/clients better so that they can help them enhance their healing.

For most people, the go-to method for dealing with pain is taking pain medication. There’s nothing wrong with this approach and sometimes it’s very necessary to take some kind of medicine to ease the suffering.

I mean, I’m still very grateful for the morphine that I got after my ankle surgery where they put 2 screws into my talus bone back in 2012.

However, pain can be treated with many different approaches and before we automatically reach for painkillers it might be a good idea to consider other options as well.

In today’s episode, I talk to Dr. David Schechter, a family practice and sports medicine doctor who’s one of the pioneers in researching the Mind-Body Syndrome in medicine.

We go pretty deep into the process of how the brain and our psyche create not just our perception of pain, but pain itself and the research behind it. And because Dr. Dave is also the author of the Mind-Body Workbook, we also look at the ways that this knowledge can be used to treat the kind of pain that is likely to be neuroplastic (which is most chronic pain).

Today I’m sharing another vulnerable episode with you.

At the end of March, I did my first Short and Vulnerable episode. If you tuned into that lucky number 13, you’ll remember how anxious I was about publishing it.

It’s never easy to ‘offer’ my heart on a plate for the whole world to see it with the awareness that it can be crushed. My heart was pounding so fast and loud when pressing that publish button.

I thought “This could be one and done, or at least many months will pass before I do something similar.”

Well… not really.

A part of me really needed to speak to you openly and vulnerably about happiness. Why I am exploring it here and now, what inspired me to open my heart completely again, and how our childhood experiences can actually make us unhappy even though we might not be aware of it.

So this episode (or any future Short and Vulnerable with Dr. Maya – This Too is Healing) is here to offer you a different kind of perspective, give you some aha moments, and encourage you to connect the dots in your life so that healing can continue for you, too.

You have to change from the inside out to see the results that you desire.
Many years ago, I came across a type of workout that gave me really fast results in a short period of time.

It was in 2009 when I found Zuzka Light on YouTube (this platform was barely 4 years old and very few people even knew about HIIT.)

And although my own training and ways of movement changed a lot over time (I still do HIIT from time to time, though), I kept track of her as she also grew to become a published author, a movement and mobility specialist, RTT therapist, and I’m happy to be sharing her knowledge on this episode.

In our interview, we covered a lot, including her own personal story of how she finally got rid of chronic pain. After years of dealing with this condition, she was pain-free within a month when applying a different kind of approach to healing.

And as you’ll discover, we touched on everything from movement and motivation, to hypnosis, RTT, the power of the mind over the physical body, and the importance of imagination in adjusting your identity from believing you are someone living in pain, to enjoying your body again.

Have you ever come across something so simple and so effective that you couldn’t believe it?

That’s what happened to me many years ago when a friend suggested EMDR to help me deal with some of my past trauma. I tried it and it was mind-boggling to me. It was simple and yet whenever I played with it, I experienced a shift in how I perceived my reality.

That’s why I couldn’t wait to share this episode with you today!

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is one of those surprising methods. Can you really get better just by moving your eyes around?

I spoke with Dr. Esly Carvalho, a published author, clinical psychologist and practitioner of the EMDR technique who runs TraumaClinic and spends a lot of her time training other EMDR practitioners.

As you’ll discover, this technique gives a jump start to the brain so that it can process and heal traumatic experiences in no time at all.

So this episode is about how EMDR really works, how it can be applied to healing trauma (from physical injuries or other traumatic events), how you heal the brain, and the many inner parts of you, and why those inner parts often know what’s best for you, even if you may not be aware of it.

I’m positive you’ll also enjoy the technique in the hands-on part of the interview that she guides us through. 😊

We can support the physical body in different ways.

I often talk about and guide my clients through the jungle of emotional and mental turmoil that comes with physical trauma. Together we release emotional blockages, deal with unhelpful thoughts, install empowering beliefs, etc.

Even though this is my calling and something that I’m really good at, I never disregard the physical things that we can do in order to help the body.

So in this week’s episode, we look into a few different remedies. You’ll discover how they can help your bone health, relieve pain, speed up healing, and so much more.

They are not magic pills, of course, because those don’t exist, but things I’ve researched and used myself as well.

It’s a fact that different cultures deal with trauma differently.

How do you deal with it?

A lot of people in the Western world try to run away from suffering that was caused by any kind of traumatic experience - accidents and injuries included. We try to forget, we put a brave face on, but good-intentional sentences from people around us such as “Just hang in there,” or “It’s gonna get better,” don’t really help, don’t they?

But perhaps instead of running away from this or acting as if it doesn’t affect us, there’s a better way to deal with any kind of trauma - and that is moving towards suffering in order to process it.

We so often hear that music can heal. Dr. Tamara Turner knows all about it. As a medical/psychological anthropologist and ethnomusicologist, she’s spent over a decade researching how music is used for healing, particularly in North Africa.

This week’s conversation goes deep into the healing power of music for physical, emotional, psychological, and generational trauma – as well as ways to tune into your own body better. We also discuss why music may not be a universal language in the way people usually think and why she, as a Westerner, was so often told "Ma truhish" which means, "Don't let your mind travel."

Enjoy!

Sometimes we can only learn through pain.

That’s what my husband Jerry says sometimes when looking back on all the injuries he sustained over his lifetime. There were a lot of ankle and knee sprains, as well as more serious injuries such as broken back and collarbone.

Today his body is as if almost nothing ever happened, which in a part is due to his optimistic outlook on life, and in part to the things I taught him (his words). Although between you and me – a lot of the times he didn’t listen :), which goes back to the beginning of this message: pain can be a good teacher as well.

So this episode is a bit different – I sat down with him, the person who has watched me create the Mindful Injury Recovery Method from zero, and bit by bit this rubbed off on him as well.

This was a great opportunity to talk about how he approached his recoveries, and how his thinking about injuries and healing has evolved, which should be especially useful for anyone who, like Jerry, is naturally inclined to skepticism when it comes to methods which may go beyond the established medical approach.

Today you’ll discover how he overcame his skepticism and this can help you, your loved ones, or your patients/clients.

Mindful movement is very healing for the body, mind, and soul.

Yoga has been in my life for about 2 decades. Although truth be told, for a large part of this time I wasn’t actively practicing it because I just didn’t ‘feel it’.

In my more than two-year recovery process after my rock-climbing accident, I was doing quite a lot of ‘hot yoga’ and it was really helpful (besides all the other ankle exercises that I was doing) in getting back the flexibility and mobility of my ankle. Then we lost touch again.

But in the last 2 years, I found my way back to the mat and started connecting with my body differently. It gently guides me to be more mindful and more present, which is so important for any kind of healing.

Yoga is very often advised as a gentle form of exercise post-injury. But with all the different forms of yoga available to choose from, how do you know what will work best for your situation?

In this episode, I sit down with Carina Raisman, yoga therapist and the founder of Re:Source Yoga Therapy, who switched from health sciences to becoming a yoga teacher, and now approaches it in a therapeutic way.

We dove into this topic of healing with the help of yoga, using it for therapy based on each individual’s needs, but also so much more about our conditioned responses to stress, our ability to adapt, and how to support all the interconnected internal systems of the body with a holistic approach.

This episode is different! When I was wrapping up the last few things yesterday for the episode to be ready and to be published today, I was still debating with myself if I should do it or not.

This week I didn’t have (the planned) episode ready, because I got sick 10 days ago and I was feeling terrible for most of last week with fever, coughing, sneezing, and all the goodies that come with whatever I had.

So while I was lying in bed, I was contemplating on what to do with episode 13. It was almost half ready, but my brain and my body were halfway fried. I was thinking of skipping it altogether but it didn’t feel right since I promised you (and myself for that matter) that new episodes of The Mindful Injury Recovery Talks would be available to you every week.

I could push through the ‘pain’ (as I did in the past), put my needs second, and just do something for my audience, and this didn’t sit well with me, either. You see, I’m a big believer of walking the talk. So how could I teach my clients and share how important it is to put yourself first, especially when healing any kind of physical trauma, if when the time comes, I put myself second?

I had some things on my mind and in my heart that I wanted to share, so I took the mic and recorded an unscripted and also very vulnerable episode that I was afraid to publish because I had so many excuses and reasons come up, and most of them were wrapped in fear.

Fear? The only way to conquer it is to go through it. That’s why I pushed that ‘publish’ button.

  1. If you’re looking for a regular episode, something that you’ve been getting for the last (almost) three months then this one is probably not for you.
  2. But if you want to get to know me better, discover how I take care of myself, and how I deal with my own demons, then go ahead – tune in >> I’m sure this will give you many (unedited) insights.

I value you because I value myself first.

To your healing journey and vulnerable moments when you feel seen and heard – because that’s what you deserve.

Any traumas that you experienced and old emotions that you didn’t process in a healthy way and let go of suppress the immune system, and the full healing capability of the body.

In an ideal world, we would learn how to process any adversity in a healthy manner in our childhood. That would equip us for life and the journey would be easier. Unfortunately, most of us were raised by parents who had their own wounds and now as adults, it’s on us to help ourselves live better.

This week I invited Amy B Scher to join me on The Mindful Injury Recovery Talks. She’s an energy therapist and the bestselling and award-winning author of 4 books, which have been translated into 16 languages.

We’ve done a few interviews together before and every time we talk, I learn something new from her. There’s so much alignment between what we do, and she has such a wealth of knowledge when it comes to energy therapy and mind-body healing, that I am always grateful for another opportunity to chat with her.

This time, we dove into decoding the language your body uses to talk to you, the importance of patience (and simple things), and how to deal with all the emotions that can accompany a healing process. Yes, she’ll also teach you her shortcut to emotional release and better healing in the hands-on work part of the conversation.

Enjoy!

When it comes to healing any kind of physical trauma we don’t really need a plan for that specific injury, what we need is a plan that works for ANY kind of injury.

The challenge that people very often have with this suggestion is that they are coming from the point of view that different kinds of injuries need different kinds of approaches and specialists. And it is true in a way. Knee surgery is way better performed by an orthopedic surgeon than a cardiac surgeon, right?

But because we’re so caught up in this thinking that we need a specific specialist for a specific physical trauma, it blinds us when it comes to the whole healing journey.

This episode will help you understand why we need to zoom out and look at the big picture, plus what you/your body really needs when healing an injury.

When it comes to pain (whether acute or chronic) perception matters greatly.

What you learned about it during your life and how those neural pathways were established give an insight into how we experience pain.

David Butler is a world-renown expert on the topic of pain, so don’t be surprised if your physiotherapist, osteopath, chiropractic, or any other medical professional nods when you mention his name.

If you’ve ever wondered about the exact steps that are needed to access the brain’s capacity for neuroplasticity and the pathways that cause or reduce pain (or how those pathways are formed) – he definitely knows the answers. And during our conversation he will also guide you through a self-reflection technique to explore how the words and language you use are affecting your pain.

This talk is a combination of the things that David learned through years of work and research, and practical steps that you can take to change your own response to pain. It was originally recorded for the 2020 Mindful Injury Recovery World Summit, but David and I both agreed that it provides incredible value, and so it’s being re-released as part of Mindful Injury Recovery Talks.

Currently there’s a (big) gap between allopathic medicine and what is needed in the world of healing physical trauma.

We are more than just a bunch of cells and in the same way, as we need to take care of our body, we do need to take care of our mind and soul.

Elena Bensonoff is a pioneer in the field of functional, regenerative, and quantum medicine, and she’s been sharing her gift of healing for over 20 years.

The health care professionals that I speak with very often come to the solutions that go beyond just the conventional medical approach because they at some point suffered with ‘uncurable’ conditions and were not happy with the offered solution of “Here, take these pills for the rest of your life.”

As you’ll discover in this episode, Elena not only healed severe asthma but also hip and back pain that she struggled with especially during her pregnancies.

There are techniques and procedures that will make a huge change in your healing journey once you decide to approach your recovery in a holistic way. This is the main topic of this week’s episode.

The way we live and perceive life is very much connected to how we see health and healing.

You’ll probably agree that materialism is (still) at the core of our culture – something shiny on the outside that we keep searching for, working for, waiting for, striving for.

So it’s actually no wonder that our current medical system is designed around the idea that all the answers we need are outside of us.

But luckily this is shifting and one of the amazing researchers and doctors who is helping move us in this direction is Dr. Helané Wahbeh. She is a naturopathic physician, the Director of Research at the Institute of Noetic Sciences and a professor at the Department of Neurology at Oregon Health & Science University.

I really resonate so much with her research and what she teaches and practices – that we have the ability to tap into the body’s innate wisdom to improve our healing. Whether it’s PTSD or injury-related trauma, this talk is absolutely essential for learning how to calm the mind and the nervous system, and tune in, and listen, and heal.

It takes real mastery to develop effective and simple solutions to complex problems like chronic pain.

That’s why I enjoyed sitting down with Les Aria, PhD so much – he’s worked with over 50.000 patients through the course of his career, and the way he explains the pain process and recovery is at the same time incredibly deep, and so easy to understand, as well as implement.

In our age of growing opioid crisis, and conventional medicine that often still tries to fix human bodies like they were machines, the kind of mind-body interventions that Les teaches are absolutely necessary for moving us forward.

Les is a pain psychologist who specializes in treating psychophysiological disorders, persistent pain, functional neurological disorders, and medically unexplained problems.

In episode 7, we dive deep into mastering the skills to calm the nervous system down, how to create pain recovery habits, the 3 Ns of neuroplasticity, and how to train your brain into pain recovery in 90 seconds.

Did you know there’s a form of self-acupuncture that you can do at home? In fact, you can try it as you’re listening to this episode.

There’s a life force flowing throughout your body and it’s known to many cultures and religious traditions. In Chinese medicine it is called ‘qi’ (chi), in Japan ‘ki,’ and in India, ‘prana’.

This life energy is transported in your body through meridians which are energy channels.

Modern science and Western medicine denied the existence of these BUT in recent years, science finally caught up. Meridians do exist in the body and have now been “discovered” through CT imaging, X-rays, and the study of human anatomy.

Of course, traditional medicine has been using this knowledge for thousands of years, and one of the best known methods of manipulating the energy flowing through meridians is acupuncture. But there’s a similar form that’s also getting more and more recognized, although not so many people understand the similarites – emotional freedom technique, or tapping.

Brad Yates is an emotional freedom techniques expert and he helps people release any blocked energy with tapping or emotional freedom technique. He has over 1000 videos on his YouTube channel and is well-known in the field of EFT.

In today’s episode, we talk about the emotional distress that comes along with injuries, how this affects recovery, and how you can simply help yourself when healing any physical trauma.

There’s a lot of controversy when it comes to detox. Our bodies are equipped with organs that take care of this process (liver, kidneys, lungs…) but is this truly enough in the environment that we live in and the food and drink we put into our bodies?

I sat down with Angel Evans who is a detox specialist and we talked about all things related to detox. We went even further and discussed not only physical detox, but mental and emotional detox as well.

As you might know, everything is connected and you have more than just one body - your physical body is accompanied by your emotional, mental, and spiritual bodies.

Angel will be the first one to tell you ‘I understand suffering and confusion’ because in her own words, before she healed her multiple sclerosis that she had for 20 years, agonizing neurological pain, and depression, she did everything wrong.

Today’s episode is a holistic view of detox and this conversation might be at times triggering for some, and eye-opening for others.
