The Nurses Supporting Nurses (NSN) Shift Support Podcast is here to help you get ready for your next shift! Publishing 3 episodes a week, each episode 20 minutes or less, for you to listen to on your school or work commute. Hosted by Megan Weaver Culbertson- a Registered Nurse and nurse mentor. Megan facilitates a weekly support group for nurses and CNAs and produces other resources to help with their mental health and wellness. In the podcast we will discuss self care, nursing/healthcare, mental health, and more!
Before working in the hospital and home care, I was a LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) working in a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) on their rehab unit. My time in Long Term Care made me have so much respect and appreciation for all the staff- from nurses to CNAs to housekeepers! I learned so much from the amazing nurses I worked with and it helped make me into the nurse I am today. This episode I'm sharing what a typical day looked like along with the good and the bad of long term care.

Today we are discussing the history of pre-hospital medicine and how it came to be. The Freedom House Ambulance Service was the first formal paramedic program and Emergency Medical Services in the United States. Staffed by Black men and women from Pittsburgh's poorest neighborhood, these paramedics paved the way to save countless lives.
My apologies for the occasional background noise in the episode. I'm trying out a new mic and I need to work on the background noise cancelation (or maybe not record around my dog, lol)

CW: SuicideJune is Men's Mental Health Month and today we are discussing this very important topic! Thanks to society, culture, and more- men may have a hard time seeking mental health treatment, expressing emotions, etc. One of the ways to lead to better mental healthcare for men is by having the hard conversations and creating safe and open spaces for me to share their experiences.

On today's episode- I am sending alllll the love and appreciation to the backbone of healthcare- the CNAs! Sharing stories and my appreciation for how amazing CNAs have been throughout my nursing career.
In the second part of the episode- I am sharing my thoughts and personal experience with a question I hear all the time- should I be a CNA before I become a nurse? While I don't believe anything is black and white- I do have a pretty strong opinion on this and I will share why!
As always, if you are a CNA, nursing student or nurse looking for support and mentorship- send me a DM on Instagram or via the website! I would love to chat and see how I can support you!

The NSN Support group is a complimentary peer to peer support group open to any nurse, nursing student or CNA. This group allows for a safe space among peers to share your struggle and triumphs, debrief from a hard shift or the continuous trauma of being in the healthcare field, and form bonds and a community with people who understand. In this episode we discuss what being in the group is like and the various benefits to being in a peer support group.

It's that time of year- our timelines will be full of end of the year reflections and highlight reels. This can be really fun or really sad. If you had a year where you felt like you just survived, it can be hard to see these post and have these conversations. Today I'm sharing my own experience with this and my thoughts on the end of the year highlight reel.

In August I started a job doing Medicaid assessments in patients homes. I love the opportunity to see patients 1:1 and the ability to go to them. It also has allowed me to understand the patients I cared for in the hospital in a new way. Every week, I'm learning the immense privilege many of us live with and the extreme barriers patients are facing to basic care. Join me in this episode as I share my experience visiting patients in their homes.

Thanksgiving is this week in the US- and unfortunately- many of us work in a 24/7 facility/job. Meaning we have to work the holiday. It's disappointing and sad to not be with our family, but there are ways to make working the holidays a little brighter!
If you work the holiday- THANK YOU!
