What happens when you decide that your age, your circumstances, or other people’s expectations do not get to define what you are capable of?

In this inspiring episode, I sit down with Noleen Dube, a powerhouse in the corporate sector, a wife and mother of two adult children. In this episode, we talk all about how Noleen summited Mount Kilimanjaro at the age of 55.

Noleen’s story is about so much more than climbing a mountain. It is about the power of positive thinking, the importance of believing in yourself, and the courage to attempt something big, even when the goal feels daunting.

We talk about what it means to challenge your own limitations, the mindset required to keep going when things get difficult, and how the lessons we learn in one area of life can transform every other part of it.

As a Black African woman, a mother, and a leader in the corporate world, Noleen brings a unique perspective to the question: What might be possible if we stopped telling ourselves that we are too old, too busy, too inexperienced, or simply not capable?

Her journey to the summit of Kilimanjaro is a powerful reminder that sometimes the biggest obstacle is not the mountain in front of us, but the limits we have placed on ourselves.

This is a conversation about courage, resilience, positive thinking, ambition, and the power of believing that you can achieve big things.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Noleen’s journey to summiting Mount Kilimanjaro at 55
  • The mindset required to take on a major challenge
  • The power of positive thinking
  • Why believing in yourself matters
  • Challenging the limitations we place on ourselves
  • Balancing a demanding corporate career with motherhood
  • What it means to pursue big goals at any stage of life
  • The lessons the mountain taught her about resilience and perseverance
  • Why it is never too late to attempt something extraordinary

If you have ever had a dream but wondered whether you were too old, too busy, or not capable enough to pursue it, this episode is for you.

Noleen’s story is a reminder: the mountain may be difficult, but the first step is believing that you can climb it.

In this episode, we sit down with ultra-runner Donovan Shirley of Pirates Running Club in Johannesburg to discuss an extraordinary challenge that goes far beyond the finish line.

Donovan is no stranger to pushing the limits of human endurance. Having competed in the legendary Backyard Ultra format, he has built a reputation for resilience, grit, and perseverance. But his latest challenge is about something much bigger than running.

Ahead of the Comrades Marathon, Donovan will run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban before joining thousands of runners on the start line of Comrades to run the official race back to Pietermaritzburg. The challenge intentionally mirrors the journey many people face with their mental health: running "Down" to Durban before turning around and finding the strength to "Get Back Up."

This powerful campaign aims to raise awareness and funds for mental health organisations Matthew&ME and the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), while encouraging open and honest conversations about depression, anxiety, and the importance of seeking support.

Matthew&ME was founded in memory of 16-year-old Matthew, who tragically lost his battle with depression. The organisation works to raise awareness around teen suicide, create safe spaces for conversations about mental health, and support families navigating depression and loss. Their message is simple but vital: it's okay not to be okay, and it's okay to ask for help.

Throughout our conversation, Donovan shares:

  • His background in ultra-running and Backyard Ultras
  • Why did he choose mental health as the focus of this challenge
  • The symbolism behind running to Durban and then back again
  • The physical and mental demands of a back-to-back Comrades effort
  • The importance of community support and connection
  • His hopes for the impact this campaign can have across South Africa

This challenge is about more than miles. It's about resilience, hope, and reminding people that no matter how difficult the journey may seem, there is always a way forward.

Because sometimes the bravest thing we can do is keep moving.

We can do hard things.

To learn more about the campaign, support the fundraising effort, or find help for yourself or someone you know, please visit Matthew&ME and SADAG.

She is however a German born, South African raised furbaby mom, trail runner, parkrun Regional Ambassador (for Northern Gauteng, South Africa), a bookworm with a newly launched bookstore, a Payroll expert for over 20 countries, multilingual and as of last year a cancer survivor. All whilst loving her friends, husband and dogs as hard as she can."

In this episode, the guest is Michitaro Mizuno. Michitaro is a young Japanese ultra trail runner, podcast host, race director, and community builder in his own right. We talk about his 94 loops at Dead Cow Gully Backyard Ultra — that’s 94 hours of running, or 3 days and 22 hours, covering a total distance of 630.364 km.

Michitaro earned the nickname "Bagman" because he ran with a shopping bag for the entire race. And yes — in this episode, we answer the question: what was in the bag?

Michitaro is part of a thriving trail running community in Tanzawa, Kanagawa, Japan.

If you’re new to it, a Backyard Ultra — also called Last One Standing — is a type of ultramarathon where runners must complete a 6.706 km (4.167 mi) loop every hour. They have to start a new lap on the hour, every hour, and the race continues until only one person finishes a loop. (Wikipedia)

In this episode the featured guest is Tomokazu Ihara, Tomo is affectionately known as "Japanese Laz" the world over. Tomo is an accomplished ultrarunner who started running from a 5km challenge at work. Tomo is currently in a quest to complete 100 100-milers and he is at number 78 at the moment. He also completed the Grand Slam.

In trail running, the term “Grand Slam” typically refers to the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning™, a U.S.-based challenge that involves finishing four of five of the most prestigious 100-mile races in a single calendar year. These races are:

  • Western States 100 (California)
  • Vermont 100 (Vermont)
  • Leadville Trail 100 (Colorado)
  • Wasatch Front 100 (Utah)
  • Old Dominion 100 (Virginia)

In 2023 the Vermont 100 was cancelled and Tomo Ran the Devil’s Gulch 100 which was an acceptable replacement race. Tomo went above and beyond by completing five in 2023: Old Dominion 100, Western States 100, Devil’s Gulch 100 (in place of the Vermont 100), Leadville 100, and Wasatch Front 100.

In this episode, we talk about the Barkley Marathons 2025 — which is Tomo's 6th attempt. This year, only four people were able to complete two loops, including Tomo. ( with one 3 loop finisher - John Kelly)

We also talk about Tomo’s recent attempt at the grueling Oshigaichi FKT, a roughly 450 km (280 miles) run with over 30,000 meters of elevation gain around the mountainous border of Shiga Prefecture, Japan.

We also discuss the docuseries tracking Tomo's series Main Quest and Japanese trail running culture.

What happens when a doctor, shaped by the weight of a global pandemic, decides to cycle across an entire continent? After COVID, Sam — a Korean-British doctor — made a quiet promise to himself: he would ride across Africa. From the rolling landscapes of Kenya to the windswept Cape of Good Hope, his journey became more than a physical challenge — it became a pilgrimage of purpose and personal reckoning.

In this episode, Sam shares what pushed him to finally make the trip, the moments that tested him, and the deep clarity that came from life on the road. We also explore how his storytelling — both in this conversation and through his Instagram videos — offers an honest, unfiltered look at Africa: its beauty, its people, its complexity. This isn’t just a story about cycling — it’s about choosing movement when the world stood still, and what it means to truly see a place, not just pass through it.

Derin is an American ultra-runner living in Tokyo. After developing a world-class dad bod due to years of health negligence, he took up running in 2017 at age 38 to master a sport he’d always disdained. A former competitive swimmer and avid hiker, he rebuilt his fitness in true rookie fashion, learning hard lessons from successive mistakes. In 2024, he became the first foreign athlete ever selected to participate in the grueling 415km Trans Japan Alps Race (TJAR).

Brian is an American living in Japan, raised near the Sierra Nevadas. Coming from a unique lineage of mountaineers (father’s side) and donut artisans (mother’s side), he is currently combining these two genetic impulses by attempting to eat a Mister Donut on the summit of all 100 of Japan’s Famous Mountains. An accomplished ultra-runner, Brian enjoys spending long days in the mountains, embracing both the adventure and the challenge.

Both runners are passionate about pushing their limits and exploring Japan’s rugged landscapes, one summit (and one donut) at a time.

Shiori Statter is one of three women who ran the Tokyo Backyard Ultra this past November.Shiori managed to clock up an impressive 100km, meaning she ran the backyard loop for 15 hours. Shiori is also a professional in the fitness industry. Shiori also takes on challenges such as starting the New Year with a 100km run around her block!

" The backyard ultra or last one standing is a form of ultramarathon race where competitors must consecutively run the distance of 6.706 kilometres (4.167 mi) in less than one hour, which is a pace of 100 miles per 24 hours. The race is over when only one runner remains to complete a lap. This runner is marked as the winner and only finisher, with all other runners receiving a "DNF" (Did Not Finish). The runner who completes the second-most laps in a race is often referred to as the "assist", in the sense that their effort is ultimately what determines how long the race is allowed to continue--there is no predefined end length or time in a backyard ultra, as long as multiple runners can complete each loop within an hour." ~ source Wikipedia.

Brett Florens is a well-renowned photographer as well as an accomplished runner. Brett started running when he was in the Police during a 6-week training camp which kickstarted his fitness and weight loss. Brett enjoyed being fit so much that he used the momentum from that camp to stay fit. His running journey progressed from running 5k's 3 times a week to a half marathon and then a full marathon. Fast forward 30 years later and Brett has completed over 25 Comrades, 10 Two Oceans Ultra Marathons and over 120 marathons all over the world. Brett is also the Chairman of a local running phenomenon in Durban called Regents.

This episode is a "race report" from my perspective as a volunteer at the Tokyo Last Samurai Standing Backyard Ultra. The Runners ran for 70 hours - however, no one "won" the race, and the last two participants DNF'd on the 70th loop.
