This week I’m joined by outgoing IAFE CEO, Marla Calico. After nearly 5 decades serving our fair industry in various capacities, Marla retires effective December 31, 2024.

Robert Nash is an accomplished entertainer, prop designer and actor. He also the creator of The Living Zultar fortune machine. Yes, that make him a direct competitor to my company’s Conjurer Fortune Machine. We talk about the origin story of his fortune machine as well as our highs and lows of performing a unique character. This week I’m at the Hillsborough County Fair in Florida. I got to hang out with Danny & Lindsay Grant for a bit before the fair opened. The two entertainers bring the Cowboy Circus and Cowgirl Circus to fairs across the midwest and mid-Atlantic regions of America. The show creates incredible memories for the kids and has been dubbed, “The World’s Smallest Rodeo.” On the show we talked about Lindsay’s transition into the fair industry, how the two met and the influence of podcasts & social media in culture.

Tasha is one of those young professionals who is an asset in every way to our industry. Spunky, quirky and never afraid to try a new idea out, Tasha’s absolutely fearless attitude has helped set numerous records at the Clay County Fair while taking home numerous awards for her efforts.

Cheryl Flood knows she’s one of the lucky ones. As executive director of the Florida State Fair, she is one of the few fair managers who actually had a fair back in 2020 just prior to the Covid pandemic being declared. While her 2020 fair was a success, she did not escape the pandemic unscathed. As the vaccine began to be distributed the decision had to be made to delay the 2021 Florida State Fair by several months. We talk about that decision and more on today’s episode.

Angela Miller has been the fair manager for the Roosevelt County Fair in Culbertson, Montana for 9 years. At first glance the fair doesn’t seem like your traditional county fair. There’s no carnival and entertainment consists of events such as a corn hole tournaments. But when you look deep, you realize the Roosevelt County Fair is about as traditional of an “Americana” county fair as you can get.
Today we welcome Jeannine Domeyer from the Delaware County Fair in Manchester, Iowa. Jeannine has been involved in the fair industry for 16 years. After cancelling in 2020 her community rallied around the fair to help raise money and support the fair. Her leadership and the hard work from her team helped successfully navigate the pandemic. She’s now looking forward to opening the gates in 2021.

In April of 2001, Chad Hymas disregarded the hydraulic fluid warning light on his tractor. That decision lead to a 2,000lb hay bale crashing down on him, breaking his neck and leaving him a quadriplegic. His story will inspire you.
Greg Chiecko is the president of OABA. The group represents over 2,500 service members including 200 carnival companies.. We talk about OABA’s advocacy for their membership and how the industry is responding to Covid.
Dale Belair is a Canadian event producer. In 2020 he started an event called FoodTruckWars.ca. The event brings food truck vendors together in communities across Canada. In 2021, Belair is hoping to take that event to the international border of the USA & Canada. Will Covid let that happen? Only time will tell.
Our industry is made up of many people. From fair management to entertainers and concessionaires to carnival operators. One group we haven’t spoken to yet is our fair guests themselves. There are people across our nation who are loyal to our events, attending every year and in some cases, every single day of the fair. Today we speak to one of those people. Judy Wilder was named Ultimate Fair Goer at the Erie County Fair in 2018.
David Feimster is the owner/operator of Hot Dog Pig Racing out of New Jersey. His show features those little racing piggies as well as hot dog racing dachshunds. Yes, racing Weiner dogs!
Kathleen O’Leary has been with Wisconsin State Fair Park for over two decades. She became the CEO in 2016 and was excited for the future of the Wisconsins State Fair. She never could’ve imagined what 2020 would have in store for her and the State Fair Park. We talk about pandemic response, the future of our industry and her role as a strong female leader in the Milwaukee area.
Debbie Powers and her husband, Corky are the owners of Powers Great American Midways, a carnival company based out of New York that runs the east coast of the United States. While they managed to sneak in a few events in 2020 like most ride operators faced what seemed to be endless cancellations. As we move further into 2021 Debbie is continually optimistic that fairs will be able to reopen later this year. We talked carnival life, H2B Visas, the pandemic and living a positive life.
Super excited to have Dan West on the show today. Dan was formerly the manager of the Manatee County Fair in Florida before leaving that position to take the job as executive director of the Florida Federation of Fairs. Florida is the first state in the country to begin having fairs in 2021. It’s no exaggeration to say almost every other fair in the nation is watching Florida closely. It was late fall of 2003. The Democratic primary for the 2004 election was about to get underway. The camera crews were in place. The reporters ready. The stage was set.
In January, Sara and I had time to catch up with Bob & Kathy Duck of the Great American Duck Race. I took a minute to sit down and interview Bob and found out how he built a post-military career around duck racing. Yes. Duck racing. Originally published March 23, 2018.
In February I spoke at my alma mater, Eastern New Mexico University. During the Q&A I had an exchange with a university staff member. I told him exactly why I, as an alumnus, had never given a penny in support of the university and how they could take that information and multiply their alumni and endowment support by 3x or more over the next 5-10 years.
In context, this was directed toward universities. Realistically it can absolutely apply to your business or brand as well. Enjoy!
