Real Talk is a podcast presented by Reformed Perspective focused on having meaningful and honest conversations with subject experts about the various challenges and issues facing the Reformed church community. Hosted by Lucas Holtvluwer and Tyler Vanderwoude, Real Talk aims to inform your discussions and inspire you to have challenging but important conversations with fellow Christians in the spirit of brotherly love.
Do you often find yourself thinking about what you should or shouldn’t do on Sunday? Stuck in this loop of either legalism or self-justification? Thankfully, God’s Word regarding the Lord’s Day and Sabbath provides clear direction. Joining Lucas to unpack this topic, is once again, Rev. Peter Holtvlüwer, who recently authored Foundations a new devotional on Genesis 1-3.
Like many issues of our day such as marriage and identity, the Sabbath is rooted in creation and has massive implications for how we are to live. Listen as we discuss the biblical understanding of the Sabbath, Sunday, and the gift of rest. And of course how it all applies to the nitty-gritty of life. We get into all sorts of questions (many of which were submitted by listeners)!
We hope you enjoy today’s episode, and encourage you to pick up a copy of Foundations to learn more about how the beginning matters for today.

Would you risk your life to share the Gospel? It’s a question few of us are called to ask but for missionaries, it is a reality they face.
Joining us to explore the topic of World Missions is Pastor James Folkerts who with his family spent many years on the mission field and knows what it means to count the cost. We discuss his story, the barriers missionaries face and why overseas missions still matter even though the nations have come to us.
We hope this episode encourages you to think about what it means to send, to go and to pray for the Gospel to reach every tribe, tongue and nation.

Family worship is one of the most neglected practices in the Christian home today. What is family worship, and how is it different from simply reading the Bible or praying before/after a meal?
In this episode, pastor and author Dr. Brian Najapfour joins us to discuss the biblical foundation for family worship, why it matters, and why worshipping together as a family is a grateful response to all Christ has done for us.
Whether you're just getting started or looking to strengthen an existing family rhythm, this conversation will encourage you to intentionally make your home a place where the Lord is worshipped. Get the Family Worship Bible Guide here! And to learn more on family leadership, check out Ep. 151 with Dr. Joel Beeke.

Most men would say they would die for their wives and children. But will they live for them?
In this episode, we're joined by author and theologian Dr. Joel Beeke to discuss what biblical headship actually looks like. In a culture where leadership is often misunderstood, avoided, or distorted, we explore God's calling for men to lead their families with humility, conviction, and Christ-like love.
From the frame work of prophet, priest and king, we chat about holy habits, marriage, discipline, and family leadership. This conversation offers both practical wisdom and gospel hope for husbands and fathers.

What does true generosity actually look like? Have we reduced giving to percentages and leftovers, while missing the heart behind it all? In this episode, we’re joined by Rev. Henk Van der Woerd to discuss the biblical role of deacons, the ministry of mercy, and how generosity reflects the very character of God. From church leadership to stewardship and practical care, this conversation challenges the way we think about money, service, and the life of the church.

What do we do with guilt? Is conviction something to fear—or could it actually be one of the ways God lovingly draws us back to Himself?
In part two of this conversation with Pastor Matt King, we talk honestly about sin, confession, repentance, and the difference between shame and guilt. We unpack why guilt, when understood rightly, isn’t meant to crush us, but can be a gift of God’s kindness that leads us back into relationship with Him.
We also explore what it means when we don’t feel convicted, the importance of confession in the Christian life, “gospel gaps” between what we believe and how we live, and how the Church is meant to walk with one another through sin with both truth and grace.

Shame can be one of the most powerful forces shaping our lives and most of the time, we don’t even realize it.
In this episode, we go back to Genesis 3 to see where shame begins, then unpack how it still works today, distorting our thoughts, and changing how we see God, ourselves and others.
But shame doesn’t get the final word. Joined again by fan favorite,
Pastor Matt King We talk about how Jesus steps directly into our shame, takes it on Himself, and what it actually looks like to start “shaming shame.”
Stay tuned for part 2 of this conversation on guilt, conviction and confession of sin… you won’t want to miss it.

Mission drift is real and whether we realize it or not, it can happen to even the best of organizations and people.
In this episode, we’re joined by Peter Greer, author of the book Mission Drift, to talk about how drift happens and how to avoid it. Even with the best intentions, it’s easy to lose focus over time—and often, you don’t realize it until you’re already off course.
Through real examples, we unpack the subtle warning signs of mission drift, the influence of culture, and how leadership decisions, people, and priorities can quietly shift your direction.
This conversation is about staying intentional—whether you’re leading something or simply trying to stay grounded in what matters most. To learn more, be sure to pick up a copy of Mission Drift.

We are all called to minister to others and the most meaningful ministry often happens quietly, in the small acts we often overlook. Joining us for this conversation is CRTS Professor and the author of The Ministry of Small Things, Dr. Reuben Bredenhof. We discuss the temptation to do big things, how we can cultivate a ministry of small things and the effects this kind of work has both on the one who receives and the one who gives.

Everyone’s busy. Packed schedules, constant pressure, always something next. But the real question is—are you actually doing what matters?
In this episode, we talk about what it means to redeem your productivity—not by cramming more into your day, but by stewarding your time with purpose. If you’re someone who prides yourself on being busy, this might challenge you.
Joined by blogger and author of Do More Better, Tim Challies, we walk through principles of how to be productive and enjoy true rest in a way that stewards all of life for the glory of God and the good of others. You don’t want to miss it.

Backsliding: Are We Presuming on God’s Grace?
Are we drifting in our faith without even realizing it? In this episode, Dr. Mark Jones joins us to tackle the quiet danger of backsliding—what it is, why it happens even in churchgoers, and how complacency can creep into our spiritual lives. From the subtle signs like pride, prayerlessness, and neglect of Scripture, to modern distractions and the love of the world.
This episode dives into what real growth, perseverance, and daily repentance look like, offering both conviction and hope as listeners are challenged to examine their hearts and run to the grace of Christ.

Can the reality of Hell actually be comforting and how should it inform the way we live and share the Gospel?
In this part two in our series on eternity, Tyler and Dr. Will den Hollander discuss what hell is and how it displays the character of God. They also get into some quite emotional questions such as can God send a child to hell? How bad is it? And why doesn’t God just create the elect?
This episode will challenge your thinking, confront your assumptions, and show how the reality of hell comforts and soberly convicts us in our love for the lost.

Is conflict always bad? And do Christians always have to forgive? In this episode of Real Talk, we take an honest look at conflict and forgiveness—two realities every Christian faces because every Christian is in relationships.
We’re joined by Dr. Tim Lane, biblical counselor and author of Relationships, to explore what distinguishes godly conflict from ungodly conflict, what real forgiveness actually looks like, and how the gospel shapes our relationships—both personally and in the church.
Conflict doesn’t have to destroy relationships. And forgiveness is more than just words.

It is with both heavy and grateful hearts that we release this episode in loving memory of Rev. William den Hollander—a faithful pastor, preacher, and dear friend of Real Talk.
Our guest for today, Dr. Will den Hollander, is Rev. den Hollander’s son. With his blessing, we chose to release this episode as originally scheduled. In God’s kind providence, this conversation on heaven arrives at a moment when the comfort of our eternal home feels especially near and deeply needed.
Together, we explore questions many Christians wrestle with: What happens when we die? What is heaven? And what will the New Earth be like? We discuss the intermediate state, the spiritual realm, and why meditating on heaven matters for how we live today.
We pray this episode would encourage and comfort you, grounding your heart in the certain hope of heaven and stirring in you deeper delight in Christ—now and forever.

2025 was a big year for us. On top of building a new studio, we have worked hard to refine our purpose and identity to ensure that we are actually cultivating real talk that serves our community.
In this episode we are joined by Mark and Jon, our friends from Reformed Perspective, to discuss the influence of someone who created no shortage of discussion: Charlie Kirk. We discuss his desire to know the truth and his boldness to witness that truth to the world in the way our Saviour did.
As we move into 2026, we are committed to keep having Real Talk and we ask you to help us with this. Give us your feedback and, ideas and call us out if we didn’t ask the hard questions. We hope these conversations are a starting point for you to have your own real talk with those in your community.

Although recorded in July, Krystal and her husband, Jeremy, supported us in still releasing this episode as they seek to honour their daughter’s life by bringing to light the injustices they faced in her care. It’s one thing to have "real talk", but it’s another to actually apply it to life. It has been a while since we last got together so we thought it was time to do a special round-up recapping how these last six months of episodes have impacted our lives. Using the theme from the well-known book Just Do Something by Kevin DeYoung we chat about how we are all called to do something and how Real Talk has been helping us do this. We hope the same is true for you! If you haven’t yet, be sure to read Just Do Something. It is well worth your time!

If you love BBC’s Planet Earth but dislike how God the Creator is never mentioned, this episode is for you! Joining Tyler and Jon for this conversation on creation and evolution is Dr. Gordon Wilson, the Senior Fellow of Natural History at New Saint Andrews College. He has created the nature documentary The Riot and The Dance and has done extensive work in defending creationism by dismantling the claims of both evolutionary theory and theistic evolution. Using his book, Darwin’s Sandcastle we talk about how Christians, especially students going off to secular university can be confident in the truth claims of the Bible and not be afraid to tackle the theories of the day with kindness and grace. We hope this episode informs and inspires you to love God’s good creation and rest in his sovereign power over all the earth.

We back at it with another Real Talk Round Up. Reformed Perspective's editor, Jon Dykstra join us for this one to recap and discuss the last few episodes. We also discuss the cultural moment we find ourselves in and how to evangelize to those around us. Jon also shares some great book/biography recommendations and we've listed them here:
"A reason to read biographies is to see, and be encouraged by what God has done in other people’s lives. And then be challenged to consider, if He could use them, what could He do with you, if only you trusted Him to keep hold of you? You can find longer reviews of each book by clicking on their title." - J. Dykstra.

As mentioned, If you have a voracious reader in your house, and they’ve already worked their way through Tolkien’s the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, and Lewis’ Narnia, what’s next? Well, Jon Dykstra had on offer a top 10 list of fantasy books that, while not all explicitly Christian, do seem to come from a Christian worldview.
9 .Wings of Dawn by Sigmund Brouwer - Thomas is a young boy seeking to win back his castle by using the technologies that might seem like magic in England, but which were in use at that time elsewhere in the world (like gunpowder, or kites).
Warlord of Nin - Stephen Lawhead - well written sword and knights story set in another realm. Lawhead had some clear Christian undertones to this earlier stories that get lost in this later book, so go with early Lawhead.
Urchin of the Riding Stars by M. L McAllister - squirrels with swords. Need I say more?
The Rise and Fall of Mount Majestic by Jennifer Trafton - a fun romp, with all sorts of inventive ingredients including:
• Piles of poison-tongued jumping turtles
• A castle built on top of a mountain that rises and falls once each day. • A tyrant twelve-year-old pepper-hoarding king
5 Brave Ollie Possum by Ethan Nicolle - the author is one of the guys behind Babylon Bee. A kid who is scared of everything can’t get his parents to believe him that there is something on the roof outside his window. But he’s right. Kind of a terrifying premise, but the comic hijinks soon take over, with the scared boy getting turned into a possum, a creature that faints whenever it is scared.
Dawn of Wonder by Jonathan Renshaw - a nephew made me and most of our church read it. And no one has regretted doing so. Only downside is that book 2 has been more than 5 years in the waiting.
The Green Ember by S.D. Smith - rabbits with swords. ’Nuff said.
Bark of the bog owl by Jonathon Rogers - loosely and hilariously riffing off the story of David and Saul. But in the American South, if it had castles. It’s been described as a Mark Twain crossed with C.S. Lewis.
On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness by Andrew Peterson - sat on shelf how can person so go at music really also be good at writing too? What are the odds? But this is fantastic, rating right up there with Lewis and Tolkien. Three children contending with the Fangs of Dang, Lizard Creatures that have conquered the land of Skree, and their ruler Gnag the nameless.

We sat down with Chris deBoer, an elder from the Canadian Reformed Church (CanRef) of Carman East. He recently attended the CanRef General Synod as a delegate, so we thought it would be good to get a summary of the hot-button topics that were discussed. He also gives a bit of background on the workings of Synod and how it is made up. We know this might be more of 'niche' episode of but even if you’re not part of the CanRef church, it might be helpful to get an idea of the topics being discussed within the federation and see how it relates to your own. Let us know your thoughts!

We've made it to episode 50 and this may just be our most important episode yet. Two documentary filmmakers, Jake Valk and John-Michael Bout were kind enough to come on the podcast to share their stories and about the amazing teaching documentary they're working on. Into The Light is a teaching documentary that walks through the fundamentals of change from bondage to sexual sin to freedom in Christ. This is a hard topic and yet may be one of the most relevant struggles facing our communities.
We sincerely ask you to support this important project, first by praying, and then by going to www.givesendgo.com/IntoTheLight and giving what you can. We're so excited for both these brothers and to see the change this film may bring for so many, by God's grace.

In this episode we tackled the topic of freedom: What does it mean, where does it come from, and how to we maintain it? Mike has been doing a series on freedom on his own podcast, One Christian Thinks, and so we had him back in the studio to break down his research for us. For those of you who are sick of talking about c*vid, fear not, we did not dwell on that topic too much this episode. However, for those of you still interested in the topic, the principles discussed do certainly apply to our current governmental situation. As always, please send in your feedback as we are do for a feedback episode in the near future!

Hey folks! In this episode, we had on Jonathon Van Maren, a Canadian columnist, author, speaker, podcaster, and activist. We had quite the wide-ranging discussion, covering many things including our current media culture, the pitfalls of social and alternative media, conspiracy theories, the persistent problem of porn, pro-life politics and more! Jonathon did a great job breaking down our current culture and we found the discussion to be very enjoyable and enlightening. Let us know what you think of it!

This is a big one folks! We interviewed Pastor Aaron Rock from Harvest Bible Church in Windsor, ON, who has taken a clear public stance in favour of reopening churches. We went through at least 10 different objections to his stance and had him explain his rationale on each point. We hope that this episode will be helpful for the many Christians, especially those in leadership positions, who are wrestling with this issue and how their local church should respond to it.
We look forward to hearing from many of you as we're sure at least a few of you have some opinions on covid that you'd like to share with us ;).

In this episode, we sat down with Dr. Art Witten, a self-described Church Order enthusiast, who has a deep understanding of the history and content of the Church Order held by the Canadian Reformed Churches (and by extension, similar versions held by other Reformed denominations). We talked about the history of the Church Order, where it came from, why it matters, how the Canadian Reformed version compares to other denominations versions, and then dove into some specific articles that deal with topics like the calling to office (Art. 3), guarding the pulpit (Art. 15), and Psalms & Hymns (Art. 55).
We both really enjoyed this episode and learned a lot more about about this important and influential document - we hope that your experience is similar!

You DO NOT want to miss this one folks!
In this episode, we talk with Mariia Alekseevskaia, who is originally from Russia and now lives in Ottawa, about her doctoral thesis paper that examines the Canadian Reformed Churches; specifically how their educational institutions (in Ontario) prepare their graduates for life in a pluralistic and diverse society.
We dove deep into Mariia's groundbreaking and fascinating work which was the result of 64 interviews with various people from both inside and outside the Canadian Reformed Federation over a seven year period. She explained both the strengths and the weaknesses she sees in the Federation and also revealed the conclusions she drew after her lengthy period of study. We can't give everything away in the description however so you'll have to tune in to get all the specifics!
As always, but especially after this episode, we'd love to hear your thoughts on Mariia's work. What did you agree with? What did you disagree with? Suggestions for future avenues of study related to the Reformed church community? We can't wait to hear them all!

Rhonda Wiersma joins us for some real talk about the important topic of mental health as we enter this holiday season. We spoke about the attitudes and stigma related to mental health both within and outside the church. We tried to understand how Biblical and Christian counseling differ in their approaches and how we can get involved as counsellors to those struggling in our own lives.
Here are a couple references Rhonda made in this episode:

Welcome to Part 2 of the Christmas Bonus Episode! If you haven’t already listened to the first part, I would suggest checking that out as it helps to frame our discussion in part two.
In this episode, we spend a lot of time discussing why Christians who share the same fundamental beliefs can disagree so strongly on various issues and why that can actually be a good thing! Let us know what you make of our analysis - none of us are trained psychologists so please let us know if we got anything wrong.
At the end of the show, we get into freedom of speech and argue over whether the American Dream (and by extension the Canadian Dream) is a Christian idea or not.
Hopefully you find this episode to be enjoyable, at least mildly informative! Looking forward to hearing all of your thoughts.

This podcast ended up going super long so we divided it into two parts (part two drops tomorrow) to make it easier to consume. In the first half we talk about racism, BLM, and how current cultural movements are impacted by ideologies like Marxism, Neo-Marxism and Critical Race Theory.
This is a bit of an experimental episode where you get to hear a little more from us as hosts. In this episode, we keep it pretty broad but the hope is to do a deep dive into more specific cultural issues every few months with Mike based on the feedback you all provide. Please let us know if this is something you would enjoy listening to!

This episode is a special one, featuring interviews with two different pastors who've worked in vastly different contexts. Rev Hendrik Versteeg served as missionary in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea for many years. Rev. Bruce Parnell has served as a pastor in a mission plant church in Stillwater, Oklahoma for many years as well. We talked with them about their different mission experiences in the jungles of PNG and the Bible Belt of America and in particular asked them about their music traditions in their respective congregations. We hope this episode is informative for all who listen and can further aide our discussions around Psalms, Hymns, and music within our churches.
