Have you ever been told at some point in your life that you are not good enough, smart enough, strong enough, rich enough or any reason really?! This podcast is meant to teach, motivate and inspire you to never lose sight of what your true passion is and to always believe that you are far more capable than you think.
Recording this episode was an honor for me personally. As a UCONN Alum and life long UCONN fan, it truly was a pleasure spending this podcast hearing from and learning from one of the true basketball minds. More importantly, as great as a coach and motivator Coach Calhoun was, he is even a better person as he truly cares for his players, staff and people overall. Sit back and enjoy as Coach Calhoun takes on his personal journey with us. Coach Jim Calhoun (born May 10, 1942) is a legendary Hall of Fame college basketball coach best known for building the University of Connecticut (UConn) men’s program into a national powerhouse. Over his 40-year collegiate head coaching career, he won 917 games and three NCAA Division I National Championships (1999, 2004, 2011). Early Life and Playing Career* Birthplace: Braintree, Massachusetts. * College Playing Career: Played at American International College (AIC) in Springfield, Massachusetts. He captained the Yellow Jackets and was an All-American, helping lead the team to their first NCAA Tournament berth in 1966. * Education: Graduated from AIC in 1968 with a degree in Sociology.
Head Coaching StintsNortheastern University (1972–1986) * Calhoun took over as head coach at Northeastern, establishing a strong foundation in New England. * He led the Huskies to five NCAA Tournament appearances and an overall record of 249–137, becoming the first coach in NCAA history to win at least 250 games at two different Division I schools.
University of Connecticut (1986–2012)* Calhoun took the helm at UConn on May 14, 1986, turning the program from a struggling regional team into a dominant national brand. * He won the 1988 NIT Championship before securing his first consensus National Coach of the Year honors in 1990. * He led UConn to three NCAA National Championships: + 1999: Captured the school’s first national title against Duke. + 2004: Won the program's second national championship with a talented roster featuring Emeka Okafor. + 2011: Secured his third national title with a young, guard-driven team led by Kemba Walker.
University of Saint Joseph (2018–2021)* After initially retiring from UConn in 2012, Calhoun returned to coaching in 2018 to launch the men's basketball program at the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford, Connecticut. * In just his third season, he led the Blue Jays to a conference championship and an NCAA Division III tournament berth before stepping down as head coach in 2021.
Legacy and Honors Calhoun was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005. * Known for his tough, demanding coaching style, he famously authored a book titled More Than a Game: How the UConn Dynasty Was Built on a Culture of Caring with sportswriter Dom Amore, detailing his deep relationships with his players. * He has also been the subject of documentaries detailing his program-building brilliance, such as Born to Lead*.

In this episode, Mikey Aytes and John Borruso, both retired police officers, now personal trainers with Anytime Fitness in Wesley Chapel, NC, talk about their two very different life paths that led them to the same result after their law enforcement careers ended, still helping and serving, but this time in the fitness industry. This episode is very different than our others shows but I am confident you will enjoy this show very much. Sit back, enjoy the show as Mikey and John take us along for the ride and share their life's story and why they continue to do what they both love to do!
Mikey is a certified personal trainer and a lifelong union county resident. He was also in the service, and overseas in the army for 6 years. After completing his time in the military, he started his law enforcement career of 26 years. His last assignment was as a resource officer at Weddington middle and high schools. Due to his prior line of work, fitness and nutrition have been extremely important to him. He is excited, passionate and committed to this new adventure, and looks forward to helping others be the best version of themselves. Say hello to Mikey when you see him!
John comes to us from New York City, where he served for over 2 decades with the NYPD, first as a Police Officer then as a Sergeant. As a 9/11 first responder, and as a first responder in general, he learned first hand the importance of physical fitness. It is his goal to help others reach their goals.

Meet Kammi Kurtz, an ER Travel Nurse, Nutrition Coach and Certified Personal Trainers. Kammi is one of the fitness and health industry's top leaders in helping many be the best versions of themselves physically, emotionally and spiritually. Kammi, shares her personal journey with her health struggles that ultimately changed what she knew best.
What impressed me the most about Kammi was that she did not let those obstacles change who she was. Instead, she took the challenge and turned it into a positive outcome to help others. Relying on her faith and with the help of others, Kammi started to her journey to reshape her path meant for her.
Here's a little more on Kammi:
Kammi is dedicated to helping others reach their full potential and who the Lord created them to be by taking care of their health and their bodies and growing through life. I grew up as an athlete and went through my health trials in high school that ultimately gave me the passion I have today when it comes to health, gut health, and health and wellness. Being a former soccer athlete, the Lord took me on a totally different path and I ended up running Division 1 Cross Country and Track & Field in college at Liberty University where I also got my nursing degree and now work as a travel nurse in the emergency department.
Because of what Kammi went through in high school and now being a nurse taking care of others, she does her best to lead by example and from the front when it comes to my own personal health and wellness journey. Kammi currently takes the “hybrid” training approach, which she has been doing for about 4 years since graduating college and has been her favorite style of training.
Kammi has also completed a full Ironman triathlon and hopes to do more in the future! Through her story, Kammi hopes someone can be encouraged that you are capable and made for so much more. Setbacks are always opportunities for growth and comebacks! If we just aim to get 1% better each day, you never know where we’ll end up.

At 20 years old, he was a Division 1 starting quarterback at the University of North Texas, when he suffered a career ending injury. He turned to hard core drugs to cope with disappointments of life. After graduation, he worked in the United States Congress, was a national fundraiser on a U.S. Presidential campaign and eventually trained to be a stock-broker for United Bank of Switzerland (UBS). One day at UBS, he was introduced to methamphetamines; he became instantly hooked—and the lives of so many innocent people would forever be changed by the choices he made in order to feed his insatiable meth habit.
After a fateful discussion during his incarceration with a seasoned convict, Damon had a spiritual awakening. He learned that, like a coffee bean changing with the application of heat and pressure, he was capable of changing the environment around him. Armed with a program of recovery, a renewed faith, and a miraculous second chance at life, Damon emerged from over seven years of prison a changed man. His story of redemption, grit and determination continues to inspire audiences today.
The Coffee Bean message has inspired thousands. Damon’s clients include such companies as Walmart, AIG, Chick-fil-A, Southwest Airlines, and sports teams like the Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Timberwolves, Clemson, Alabama and Georgia. The U.S. Army has even incorporated the #BeACoffeeBean mindset into their resilience training. Damon’s story has been featured both nationally and globally.
He is passionate about the Coffee Bean message and loves sharing how it changed his life and how it can change yours, too.
His Wall Street Journal bestselling book, The Locker Room: How Great Teams Heal Hurt, Overcome Adversity and Build Unity, is being optioned for film adaptation.
His children’s book, The Coffee Bean for Kids, is the genesis for Coffee Bean Clubs being started by students at schools all over America.
Today, Damon lives a life of recovery and service, sharing his story all over the world. Of all the hats Damon wears, however, the two most important to him are being a husband to Kendell and a stepfather to Clara.

Lisa is the Co-Founder and Owner of FIT House Davis. After almost a decade in marketing and public relations, Lisa followed her passion, took the leap and opened a full-service boutique fitness studio which employs 28+ people and offers a large variety of classes per week. Lisa spends her days managing the business alongside her partners, training her clients and teaching group fitness classes. Lisa truly loves what she does and often calls it "movement therapy." Helping folks get their body and their mind right.
Lisa believes in making Self-Care and Exercise a Priority — Lisa says "Prioritizing self-care is not a selfish act. It means you are being mindful of your own needs ,enabling you to better care for others. I am the mom of four children and I know that my early morning runs help me focus on daily tasks and the needs of my family. Without the release that happens when I exercise, I would be overly stressed, less patient and I would have less energy to give to the people who need me most. As a trainer, I encourage clients to write down acts that fill their cups up and do 1–2 of these daily. Whether it’s a run, massage, meditation or a walk with a friend, self-care is essential for overall well-being."

In the Game Fitness is committed to serving teenage girls through comprehensive, safe, skill specific athletic inspired training programs. The four pillars of In the Game FItness are: Mindset, Nutrition, Training, and Recovery. Founder Sarah Stack believes in providing a nurturing, supportive, and fun community for high school age girls who both play competitive sports, and those who just want to have a more active lifestyle. Sarah is a Certified Personal Trainer (ACE,) a Fitness Nutrition Specialist (ACE,) a Stretch and Flexibility Coach (NASM) and mom to a daughter (and son.)
In the Game Fitness was created to fill a void in the training options available to teenage girls, both those who play competitive sports and those who are simply interested in fitness. We've created a unique program that goes beyond physical training, and incorporates nutrition information and mindset work.
We are what we eat, and the link between how we fuel our bodies, and how our bodies perform is undeniable. Talking about nutrition to teen girls does not have to be tricky or taboo. It doesn't have to be a discussion about calories or fad diets either. Giving girls solid nutritional information about how what they eat impacts how they perform in sports and daily life isn't complicated, and they truly want to know this information!
Studies show that around the age of 14, many girls who have played sports their entire lives decide to quit their sport(s). There are many lifelong benefits for girls who continue to to play sports throughout adolescence, so the trend of quitting around 14 years old is disappointing. Many of the sited reasons why girls decide to abandon their athletic careers at such a young age are rooted in social concerns, body image issues, and a lack of professional role models. In the Game Fitness will address these concerns from the inside out with mindset work.
This three pronged approach to training: the physical, nutritional, and mental; will train the whole athlete to better prepare her to compete in her sport(s), to give her the confidence to be able to walk into any weight room and know exactly what to do with the equipment and how to maintain proper form, and will help prepare her for whatever her future holds.
