HI! I am Krysten Fielder. I am an Internationally Credentialed Mental Health Professional who specializes in Parenting and Family Recovery with a passion for guiding adolescents and young adults so the entire unit can not only launch but flourish. I am also a Professional Interventionist who will guide you to the right first step for you and your family.

Throughout my childhood I watched my father struggle with alcohol addiction. It wasn't until after battling my own addiction to alcohol for over a decade that I decided I didn't want the generational curse to continue. Not if I could help it that is. I was suffering from low self-worth, low self-esteem, as well as social anxiety.

It wasn't until I was looking down at my children while holding my millionth drink of the day that I realized I was doing everything I swore I wouldn't be and teaching them the same things I desperately wanted to get away from. I sought help and once I got sober everything changed.

I realized then that it was my passion to help families struggling with addiction and those still trying to break free from that merry-go-round of sorrow and grief.

Let me help you find yourself again and be the person you always dreamed to be. Bring that smile back to your face and the faces of those you love the most.

Life is worth living and you deserve to be on the path to being whole again.

Decluttering with Emotional Awareness: Embrace the Story Behind Each Object"- with Melanie Shenberger, Decluttering Coach.

Every object in our environment carries a story as to how you got it, why you keep it, and what it means. Some would label them as clutter or unnecessary or whatever, but you keep them because they make you happy.

When it comes to decluttering, many of us feel overwhelmed by the idea of having to throw away items that we may have collected over time. However, as a decluttering coach, I believe there is a much more meaningful approach to dealing with our physical environment – the key is to look at each object in our space and be present with the emotions that come with it. Every item holds a story behind it – from how it was initially acquired to why we still keep it and what purpose it serves in our lives.

When looking at our possessions through this lens, can help us identify which objects hold true value and should stay in our lives while letting go of things that no longer serve their purpose. This allows us to slowly create an environment that is clear and uncluttered, but still full of items that evoke positive sentiments or emotions within us.

Tricia is joined by guest Hollee Guthrie, founder and owner of Peacefull Living. Listen as they discuss inspiring stories of transformation.

___________________________________________________________________

Hello everybody. Welcome back to Mastering the Drop, A real view of recovery where we share, the psychological skillsets and tactics as well as the practical application thereof in your life so that you can begin living your life the way that you desire.

But we also come and share stories of hope. We also shared stories of success. And we really just try to bring that you are not alone feeling to any recovery journey, whether that's from chemical substances, whether that's from a process or a behavioral addiction, like people pleasing codependency over booking your calendar, the all in and all out of the diet, culture, whatever that looks like for you.

We try to come and. Useful tidbits of information and share genuine, authentic stories of how transformation can actually happen. My name if you didn't know, is Tricia Pardo. I'm the owner, creator and director of Turning Leafs Recovery Life and Wellness Coaching, and today I have one of my most precious special Coaches here with me, Hollee and I have had a long relationship, but Hollee is a coach here with us at Turning Leaves and she joined the team because, she's just really passionate about helping others who are struggling with, drugs and alcohol, but also low self-esteem. Lacking motivation and, really.

Fear of Failure or that, that fear of change. And she just has such an amazing way of helping people transform those situations in their life. Without further ado, Hollee does have an amazing story that, She can share with us a little bit about, of course, the best way to find out most about her is to just reach out and have a conversation.

But anyway, Hollee, welcome to the space. I know that, none of us really like to be like on the spot, but anyway, say hello. Tell everybody a little bit about. Hi. I am Molly. I live on Maui and I have been through the Turning Leaves program myself in a recovery from alcohol. I have believed in the program so much that I wanted to teach it to others and help others in their journey to recovery, whatever that means to them.

I have. Gone through it and been in it for about three years, I stick with it because it helps me stay on the base of recovery. Yeah, I, it again, it's been such a pleasure and such an honor to be part of your life. Like it's been a really long time since like I was your coach, honestly. Like we stay connected because we both eat, sleep, breathe this.

I think. You have such a connection with that fear of change and what that, what that kind of looks like. For somebody that is sitting in that, do you mind sharing a little bit about how that was for you at the beginning? Like that fear of like really making a change or move?

Yeah. I was afraid of losing friends was one of my biggest. Issues also, but just afraid. I felt like I couldn't do anything without it. Like I felt like I couldn't even water my yard or clean my house or . It was such a big part of my life that I felt that if there was that change, that those things would go away for me.

From what I've learned by being in the program is I enjoy them much more. And life has been much more filled with gratitude and love and light and motivation, honestly, where I thought that without the alcohol, that I wasn't able to have motivation and it moved me forward to being able, I relate to that.

That's all. I relate to that so deeply, , I thought, oh, I'll never be creative again. I'll never, I won't be any fun on vacation. , even, I was fearful of what it would do, for my intimacy level, even say with my spouse, right? Just all of it. I remember just being when you have something in your life for 30 years or better, right? I'm, I don't know your exact number, it was over 30 years for me that alcohol was part of my life. And, just like I remember crying, I just decided, I like planned my day. I knew what day I was gonna stop, right?

But I still remember crying that day like I was losing my best friend. And I don't know about you. And, just to lean into what you said, that fear of losing friendships, like of relationships changing I don't wanna blow smoke for anybody. It's gonna happen , right?

It's gonna happen. You keep some, you lose some, and some of them grow even stronger. And some of them just take a, a totally different take on a totally different shape or feel, whatever. Yeah. It is a big change. Did you experience some of that also?

Absolutely. I've also found that the more I've gotten into the program and stayed sober, the more I see the people around me. Engaging in it with me, where in the beginning I felt like I had to join the party and prove to myself that I needed to stay sober and I could do it with my friends and this and that.

And then as time went by and things passed, I was able to notice that they enjoyed being around me in that sense, like it was a little different for me that way that. People really just enjoyed seeing me in a light once they realized I was really gonna go into the light, I guess is, if you wanna say it like that, right?

I think, I was nervous about losing lots of people in my life and I think that they enjoy me better now than they see me and I've, yeah, definitely. Yeah, I think it, and I think it continues to get better, right? Yeah, absolutely. I'm what, 10 years now, right? 10 years. Eat, sleeping, breathing the turning leaves way, I guess if you get it, get down to it.

But my husband and I were just talking about it this weekend. He's if you are my only friend for the rest of my life, like I'm fulfilled and satisfied because you. I'm funnier. I'm quirkier. I'm sillier, I'm more playful. Whatever it is. Like it's just such a tremendous difference to, to be, living fully.

However, I will say that I know that the low self-esteem , can be one of our sticking points. It can be one of the things that takes us the longest. Yeah. To really, to really change. And yeah, I'm focusing on things that are, other than just putting down the booze, right? Because , that's just the first step in that, can be a little difficult.

Tricia is joined by guest Roberta Hughes, founder and owner of Peacefull Living. Listen as they discuss creating awareness around emotions.

___________________________________________________________________

Hello. Hello everybody. Welcome to Mastering the Drop, A real view of recovery where myself and my guests talk about all different, um, aspects of a life recovery journey. Um, this week I have to say, I'm, I'm, I feel especially grateful and as you can all see just even with the peaceful background, um, I have a very dear friend of mine, Roberta, here with me from Peacefull Living and, and it's just such a gift that she is here and, and we've been spending quite a bit of time together lately and, um, with the team and, and, and everything and, and she just has so many gifts to give. But I really love how everything that she teaches and, and brings to her practice, um, how it actually supports a lot of the cognitive and emotional work that we do at Turning Leaves.

Because her approach is also, you know, with that, with that thought process of helping you nurture your own self-awareness of, of cultivating that emotional intelligence. And, and, and you know, of course this the stress management that we all need, right? And I am, am. You know, I'm not quite about the fact that I love, you know, Pilates and meditation and my, you know, my spirituality is, is, you know, very, um, very special to me.

And, and I, I just love the, the work that she does and, and the meditations are so healing. Um, anyway, I, I haven't even introduced her yet completely. Roberta Hughes. Is, is the founder of Peacefull Living, where, you know, she does customized, um, classes. There's on demand. Um, you can do yoga, you can do Pilates, you can do meditation, and, and you can, you can do it all, you know, in, in one sitting and, and it's just such a wonderful.

Approach and, and just, uh, just the site itself is, is so peaceful and, and I just love the way that, you know, you've set up your practice, Roberta. So I'm gonna let you like, come in and say hello and introduce yourself Before I start with all of the wonderful questions I, I wanna ask you today,

So thank you Tricia, for the introduction and for having me here on your show.

We have been working on a few things together lately, and I recently had the opportunity to do a guided meditation for some of your coaches, and that was a true gift for the holidays. Not just for me, but I hope for them and for you as well. Um, as coaches, you guys give so much to helping people on their recovery journey that it's important to nourish and nurture yourselves along the way and not to forget to do that.

So, It's been a joy to be part of that support team for you and your coaches and to be here today to see what I can share to help your audience and your clients and the people who listen to your podcast for inspiration and hope and motivation on their recovery journey.

Thank you. It is, it's always so amazing to, to spend time with you and, and I'll tell you the feedback from, from our team meeting.

Um, when you came was all about you and, and, and all of the gratitude for, for having you come in and spend some time with them. They all felt so just blessed and, and gifted. When, when, um, when it was over and, and it's, so anyway, it was. It was, it was amazing. But, um, you know, something that, you know, you and I haven't talked about, so I've been dying to ask you this, um, is, you know, to to know really what, what drove you or what brought you to this place that you're in, like the work that you do, because it's such a gift.

You know, I, I always, I'm always really interested to know like what. What drove you to be here and, and then you know, what, you know, really cultivated that passion to, to, you know, take it even further and create this wonderful thing that you have.

Yeah. So I first became curious about yoga in college. I took my first yoga class.

As a one credit course in college, and prior to that movement had always been a part of my life, but it was more from the place of gymnastics and cheerleading and the performance of movement rather than, um, mindful movement and figuring out how movement affected your body. Not on the only on a physical level, but on an emotional and spiritual and mental level as well.

And I really felt the transformation right away. After I would finish a yoga class and walk out that door, I just felt different. I felt more at ease. I felt more at peace. I felt more focused and ready to go to my next class, and my friends could see it in me too. So that's really where the curiosity about yoga started and after college, I got married and was moving around every three years because my ex-husband was in the Air Force and. I was able to study at Santa Barbara Yoga Center, which is pretty close to where you live. . Yeah, that's where I did my 200 hour yoga teacher training. Um, when I was four months pregnant with my second son, I drove up and down the coast from Vandenberg Air Force Base to Santa Barbara over the course of two years and completed that 200 hour training.

And as I taught yoga, I could just see how it helped people, um, find that place of peace. And mostly I taught for fitness centers at Air Force Bases and then for big box gyms when we no longer lived on the Air Force base and. Over time, I kind of moved away from the yoga practice because I found that many people were looking more for movement as a way to achieve something, and that wasn't really how I taught yoga.

And during that time, I was introduced to Pilates. And for me, Pilates was more of the the thing that you could do to create movement patterns to. Changes in the physical body, and that felt better for me to teach in the fitness center, um, environment. But fast forward to 2018, I, I started missing my yoga practice again.

And missing that as being a teacher, and I really wanted to bring it back into my teaching. I would kind of weave it in with some of my Pilates clients, but I ended up opening this tiny boutique yoga center within a Pilate studio. It was only big enough for three students at a time, so it was more of a semi-private experience, and it was designed to feel like a relaxation room at the spa.

So it really was the place to come and restore and nourish yourself, not really to do something to yourself. And I opened the doors the October before Covid and had just started to see people in this little tiny studio and you know, start to offer yoga again. And then of course we know what happened in March of 2020, so I had to close the door and that's when I started all of my online and virtual content. And I'll kind of pause and let you ask a question because maybe you wanna go in a different direction.

I always have so much swimming through my head, right. Because you know, even when you started talking.

You know, uh, you know, your, your physical fitness, right? Like that, that period of your life before, you know, when you got into yoga and it was gymnastics and it was this, and it was that. And, um, I, I, I relate to that in a lot of ways.

This week on Mastering the Drop, join Tricia with Guest Julie Jones! Listen as Tricia and Julie discuss Intellectualizing a life change. When we experience changes in the outside world, they often bring about an internalization. The process of intellectualizing can be seen as one that helps us to understand our own life.

___________________________________________________________________

All right. Welcome back to Mastering the Drop. A real view of recovery. I am super jazz pumped right now because, you know, my, my, my really good friend Julie Jones is here with us today and, and she just always brings so much love, light energy, pizzaz to any space. So of course I've already like energized.

Um, and, and so, you know, we're just gonna kind of jump to the chase because we're ready to have this conversation , right? Um, because intellectualizing a life change or a recovery journey or, you know, whatever that life change is. It's a great conversation to have.......

My guest, Julie Jones, Welcome my friend. Welcome.

Well, thank you. I am super excited to be here. I've been looking forward to this, this conversation with you and I'm just so grateful to have you in my life. And yeah, so again, I appreciate the opportunity because you know, it's in these types of conversations that so much comes out that it supports and, you know, inspires other people to, you know, figure out their own journey.

Because everybody's journey is unique and everybody's journey, if you wanna say, is customized. Like nobody's gonna have the same journey ever cuz that's life.

So true. So true. When I know that, you know, you've had, you know, a lot of, a lot of journeys happening, right? Like some, like really cool, some, you know, some challenging, some whatever, right?

Like life change is big. Life change is big.

Well it is, and I don't know, I just recently posted, um, on all my social media, so on October 27th was a big day for me, and I call it my 10 and 10. So 10 years married, and that's been a journey in and of itself. Um, because of the fact that, um, my husband and I have had a lot of ups and downs in our relationship, but bottom line was that, you know, I, I love him so much that sometimes I was just willing to weather some things at my expense.

And then it was when I finally took a stand for myself and realizing, That I was no longer gonna tolerate some of the things that I tolerated. It's really shifted and changed a lot of different dynamics in, in our relationship as well. And then the other 10 came in. That I'm, you know, 10 months sober. So on December 27th of last year, so 20, you know, 20, 21.

I made the decision after examining my relationship with alcohol and I said, Okay, enough is enough. And I had thought about it a a lot as well. Like, you know, you talk about this, you know, intellectualization and I'm not always a think. Right. But at this particular moment, and this particular decision, I was. Because I had really started examining, um, you know, like the, the instances in my life where I was probably a little bit embarrassed by my behavior, and I realized a lot of it was alcohol related.

And then I also realized because of the struggles with my husband is that when, you know, he would drink, Then that would be like the trigger for me to drink and to drink even more. Like, it was like almost like, I'm gonna show you like, you know, Uhhuh, I can, you know, I can drink too. Right? And I, I also just recognized for myself that I really don't have a shutoff bells like I would say it's gonna be just, you know, one, one glass, right?

And it was one bottle and it wasn't every night, but it was quite a bit. And so I, I think about all the different times again, like in blacking out, getting sick, like, you know, those different kinds of things that, you know, really made me stop and think, is this the best, you know, best solution for my life? Yeah.

Yeah. I, I hear, wow, I hear that, right. Like the no, shut off. But also that intellectualization as to why we're drinking, right? Like when we're in it, we're in it, right?

Oh yeah, we can justify anything, right? Like, I mean, I. You know, like I used to justify that it was, you know, like my way to like, to relax, right?

Or I had a hard day, or you know, all the reasons that, you know, we give ourselves, I'm socializing it's happy hour. It's this, it's that, you know, I mean, think I remember because it was, um, Halloween last year and I'm known for throwing a huge Halloween party. and like I, I now look back and I, I recognize like a little bit of like my default and thinking.

This week Tricia welcomes new TLR coach, Anu Morgan! Listen as Tricia and Anu discuss the importance of placing healthy boundaries in a relationship.

___________________________________________________________________

Hello. Hello everybody. Welcome back to Mastering the Drop, A real view of recovery where, we just have amazing conversations with amazing people. This week, I'm super excited to bring in Anu who is new with us here at Turning Leaves, but definitely not a stranger to the coaching practice or industry.

And I could not be more honored that she has joined our team and the level of expertise that she brings with her is just, tremendous. I just get so excited every day. Anu, say hello.

Hello everyone. So nice to be here.

Thank. Thank you. I'm so excited to have this conversation today because you know, the holidays are challenging.

For so many reasons on so many different levels. And if you're listening to this as a replay, and it's January of 2023 or whatever, daytime or year, don't push, don't push, stop, continue listening because it's applicable all year long. But, but right now where we're sitting here, just ahead of, you know, Thanksgiving and you know, just really transitioning into this space where, you know, It's, you know, family, there's pressure to, you know, perform, to buy gifts, to cook the right meal, to, to show up to everything, for everybody to juggle and manage your, your, your professional life with all of the additional things.

But there's more to it. And, and I, I think that, you know, this is really important because there's a lot of people out there that are in relationship transition. Whether it is, you know, a relationship that has been struggling for some time that is still fighting to repair or a relationship that has dissolved recently and is in that separation, um, space and, and that whole newness of.

You know, what is this gonna look like? Especially when there's kids and, and, and you know, who gets who, when, where, and how do we, you know, all the things, especially when there are long term relationships that are ending. Now you have that grieving of, you know, not being with the in-laws that you used to be with, or, uh, you know, having to meet new people if you're starting something new.

For the first time. There's so many different layers. I mean, I know I have clients right now that are in it, right? Like, they're like, oh, I've been single for a couple of years. Like, I don't know, is the holidays the right time to invite, you know, to introduce somebody new Or is this the right time to start dating somebody new?

All the questions, and I see your wheels spinning because I know you have many of the answers.

So many different dynamics going on, for sure. Yes. And everybody brings their own story into it and their own complexities into it. And then it's the merging of the two that makes it very complicated, . And so that's what I see all the time.

You know, people are bringing their baggage so to speak, and their unhealed traumas and all of that complicates it.

Mm, I like that you said that about the baggage, right? I don't know anybody that listens all the time has seen me do the, the bag, the bag maneuver, right? Like this bag of things. And, and, and I see this with people all the time also, right?

Like they, they just pull something out of their, you know, their. Bag of past experiences and they're just slinging at all the new things that could be new and fresh and beautiful. But I'm gonna attach this to there because it's what I know, right? It's what you know, it's what I've experienced before and now you know, this poor, unknowing individual is like stuck with your ex from three times ago's, you know, bad act , right?

So, you know, you can't build something new with living in the, in the past. Right. So it really helps to make people aware or they have to be aware of what they're bringing to the table. Yeah. And the holidays makes it just so difficult with so many people in the mix family and everybody has something to say.

And the, the new person or the old person has something to say, the family has something to say, so you have to clear out the clutter and figure out where you stand before any of that gets convoluted by all the noise.

In this week's special episode, Tricia welcomes back Jenny Dilts. Tune in to hear about how Jenny began her journey as a Grieving Coach.

___________________________________________________________________

Hello. Hello everybody. Welcome back to this week's Mastering the Drop, A real view of recovery where we talk about all kinds of recovery needs, right? There's of course the traditional, the space where everybody's head goes to. Um, for those folks that are struggling, that are down the. Um, not functioning in their daily lives that really, you know, could use some help removing chemical substances from their life.

But then there are so many other journeys that we have to take and, and today's topic is really, Special to me because I recently, um, have, have had to, you know, take this walk and, and so I'm really excited to, to welcome my, my guests today and, and invite you to experience her as well. Jenny Dilts is a grief a.

Coach. Mm-hmm. . Yes. A grief coach. I always wanna stick the word recovery in there. Um, she's a grief coach who, who really specializes in accompanying people, um, on their journey to con, to convert their grief into, uh, a space of growth. , but she does it in a way that that really matches where each client is and, and, and to do it in their own way, in the way that's gonna serve them.

And she does it without judgment, without expectation, and, and just the removal of despair is just amazing. So, you know. I don't, I don't wanna, you know, continue to try explaining exactly how you take people on this magical journey, Jenny. But, but you know, again, grief is a big thing. Right? And, and it's, it's broad.

It's not just when we lose a person. Yeah. It could be a lot of things. Um, so anyway, why don't you introduce yourself and, and tell people, you know, one, how, how, how did you come. To, to feel called into this space.

Sure. So, like Tricia said, my name is Jenny Dilts and I'm a grief coach. Um, I started really working in the grief space about six years ago when I volunteered to give a meal to a family whose husband and dad died suddenly.

Unlike most of people who work in the field of grief, I don't come with quote, personal experience with grief. Um, my introduction to grief was when I dropped this meal off to the family. So I, I delivered this meal to this family. I thought it was gonna be a five minute visit.

It turned into a three hour life changing experience for me, really. And this is really where I found my calling, um, both as like a life mission calling. This is what I'm supposed to be doing, as well as an internal calling of passion and excitement, even. To support people in their grief.

I don't mean to interrupt because I, but I'm so extremely fascinated, um, and intrigued about, you know, what that what that first meeting looked like, like three hours.

The people you didn't know, like, what did, what happened inside of that?

Like I said, I was expecting a five minute meal drop off. I had all five of my kids with me. We were gonna just drop off the meal and go to the park. Um, well, mom invited us in and I sat down on their couch and she started talking and I listened. I listened, like everything depended on that. Because probably it did, it did for me.

Um, often she apologized for recounting the details of trying to save her husband. Mm-hmm. , she apologized for the graphicness of what she was sharing. None of that bothered me. I didn't, I wasn't like phased by her tears. I wasn't phased by the grief, the trauma. I was there. I was there focused on her and her experience.

How amazing.

It was. Incredible.

Cause I know, I know that, you know, we're often at a loss for words. We don't know what to say. We don't know. How to be, and we know that there isn't anything we can do really. Mm-hmm. that, that can change the situation. And I think as, as beings, most beings right. Want to help fix things.

Mm-hmm. , So how, how interesting that you were, were able to be so connected.

That's part of that is my default nature. I'm a listener. I observe things. I'm not usually one to initiate the conversation, but I can listen. I can be present. That's one of my superpowers, and that's what I discovered that day is that I have a calming presence.

And people feel safe opening up with their deepest pain, their greatest vulnerability, their hardest and most painful grief.

In this Special Episode, Tricia is joined by Matt Gardiner, of the Beyond Recovery Podcast. Listen as he shares his story and journey in Recovery.

___________________________________________________________________

Hello. Hello everybody. Welcome back to Mastering the Drop, A real view of recovery where we either have a very in depth conversation about skill sets and tactics that you can use, um, to be successful in your own life transformation journey. Or we have the amazing opportunity to hear. Other beloved people inside of our communities, um, that, that have amazing stories of transformation, of, of growth.

And, and are now stepping into helping others and nurturing those relationships and those recovery journeys as they are fitting for each person as they arrive. Anyway, , But that was, that was a mouthful. Today my special guest is, is very near and dear to me. We, um, are, are absolutely in a space of cultivating a great unified.

You know, relationship in, in this space of helping people move from recovery and beyond, right. To, to play on the, the words that I see there behind you. Um, but, but you know, I've been on Matt's show and Matt and I have had many conversations and now Matt is here to share with you all what I know to be his journey and, and the impact that it's had in his life because it is just an important message for everybody to hear. But Matt, I'm gonna let you introduce yourself because you do so much better at, at telling people who you are, what you do, um, and why you came here to share your story.

Awesome. Tricia, thank you so much for having me on.

And You're right. I loved your introduction. Uh, you know, absolutely, like I, it was absolutely one of my favorite guests that being you on, on my show. Uh, Beyond Recovery, as you mentioned, just fantastic. It was one of those hour long conversations that seemingly was 10 or 15 minutes. It really felt like we could have branched off into like a mini series of different topics.

So, you know, I, I really appreciated. You, uh, coming on the show and then of course, me, uh, having the opportunity to come and tell my story on your show. It's just fantastic. So thank you.

Absolutely. Absolutely. Um, you know, I know we all have a beginning, a middle, and a where we are now because it, there's never really an ending, I don't think.

Um, And, and I know that we all hope that even after our lives end, we leave a legacy behind that still will continue to impact people's lives. But you know, um, obviously we can get to that ending stuff later. Share with me how you, where did it all start, right? Like what did it look like, feel like for you when you got to this space of.

You know, I got something's gotta change .

Yeah, for sure. Thanks. Thanks for that, that that set up there. I will start, I'm gonna go back to, I wanna say it was about the five year old version of me. So five year old Matt. Uh, my dad was, was and is, uh, a big drinker and it was, um, my uncle Paul on my mom's side.

And I just remember whenever they would get together, they'd be in the other room and things would just start getting me louder and louder. And I was very curious by that because it was louder in what seemed to be a fun way. I, It wasn't like they were arguing or anything. I then I kept kind of wandering over to that room.

I'm like, What? The music's getting turned up. They're yelling at each other even though it's like two. Yeah. Even though it's like 2:00 PM So I'm curious. Right. I'm a curious little guy. I'm still very curious. And I walked in there and they were like, Hey Matt, Matt, come over here for a second. Right. And then it's like, you hand me the beer.

I do like the, the little sip of the beer. Yeah, that's so gross. How can you drink that? And they start laughing, right? So that's like my first exposure to it, just being like, okay, something is about what's going on in that room and what they're doing and what they're drinking. So that got in my, my head pretty early, right?

So it wasn't like I was, you know, slamming beers at five. But I definitely had an exposure to. What that all meant, relate to that. Yeah, for sure. Sure. So, uh, that's, that's where it started. And just obviously the, uh, the ancestral part of it. So my dad, heavy drinker, my dad's dad, same thing. Very uh, lengthy lineage as far as we know, like the great grandfather and everybody on that side of the family.

Big drinkers, Irish background, very stoic. Anytime I look back at like old photos of them, they're very like, you know, resting the RBF or Yeah, resting bitch face. Just kinda, everybody's just so like you, you know what I mean? So like there was definitely a lot of that on my dad's side, my mom's side, more so like with my Uncle Paul, as I mentioned.

Definitely had some on that side. So definitely, you know, on both sides there was elements of that. But specifically on my dad's side, so you know, my parents divorced when I was 13 and I had a fairly sheltered upbringing up until that point. My mom was a stay at home mom and I felt very betrayed, uh, by this idea that, you know, I had this like wonderful family upbringing and.

To me, when I was 13, I was old enough to realize, like I'd been lied to, like it was, I, I felt deceived. My parents, I, I was very in both of them and heading into high school, like where I'm from is, uh, Prince George, British Columbia, Canada. It's about 70,000 people. So when I went to high school, it was grade eight through 12.

So, I hadn't really hit a growth spurt or anything until I was about grade 10. So I was a very small kid, shy to begin with everything. All this, like Stu, you know, this, my whole family system had been uprooted, so I didn't really have a comfort zone, you know, I didn't really have a, a sanctuary, so to speak.

The house had, uh, had very much changed the dynamic. My family had very much changed, so, yeah, and then I was, I got bullied a bit. I was just, I, I was showing up to, to school and this small kid that's not talking to anybody. So I was like a prime target for bullying. So I was definitely exposed to that pretty early on.

Um, you know, and then so fast forward a couple years into high school, I got into music. I had been doing sports, but I felt that was very emotional during my, the sporting events. I had a hard time I could practice, like in practice. It was all good when we were just having fun. But when the pressure was on of competition, I got very emotional.

So, uh, Whether that had anything to do with the divorce and everything else too. I just, I was an emotional kid. Right. So I found with music though, as soon as I pivoted into that, two things happened. First off, I found a way to be able to express myself in a more abstract way, you know what I mean? Like songwriting and even playing guitar.

I could process these emotions that I was really having a hardtime in my environment. But the, the guitar and my songwriting became very important for my, um, you know, dealing with or coping with different things that were happening in my life at the time, the divorce, the bullying, et cetera, and gave me a place to go. All of a sudden I had like musician friends, so I had a group that were like my group, you know?

Uh, but having said that, you know, uh, if you know anything about. You know, rock and roll music. Of course, that's synonymous with the rock and roll lifestyle, which I started glamorizing, uh, you know, pretty early on. So by the time I was 16, that's when I really got into, uh, drinking, uh, every other weekend.

Right. And getting into marijuana use and, and, uh, reading like Led Zeppelin. Biographies and learning how cool it is to do drugs and drinking and tear apart a hotel room. Like that's, this is what the life for me, right? I'm an angry teenager. This works out perfectly. Plus being a child of the nineties, you know, a lot of that music was pretty angry.

Looking back on it, I have a hard time listening to it now. You know, like Rage Against the Machine, uh, was great for 18 year old Matt, who was really angry at everything. But I'm, you know, I'm not really there anymore. So, aside from nostalgia, Tend to steer away from a lot of that music. Um, so that was where it all started, right?

That whole teenager thing with all that sort of stuff going on, the bullying, the not feeling like I belonged, right? Um, I found that the drinking, uh, uh, brought me out of my shell and I was like, really tapped into the, the true version of me, right? I'm no longer shy. I can go talk to girls now. Right? This, these types of things.

That was, that's what got in my head. Um, so yeah, fast forward into my early twenties, uh, I moved out on my own and that's when the drinking, I started crossing a lot of boundaries and that's when there was something in my head going, uh, okay, you're, you're saying this, that you're gonna do this, but then.

Just either ignoring it or pushing it aside.

.....

"I walked in there and they were like, Hey Matt, Matt, come over here for a second.

But I definitely had an exposure to." - Matt Gardiner

This week Necole Hines joins Tricia again on Mastering the Drop as a Special Guest! Listen as Necole shares her own life recovery journey with us after a freak car accident.

___________________________________________________________________

Hello. Hello everyone. Welcome back to Mastering the Drop, A Real View of Recovery where my guests come on to share personal stories, um, about their own journey. In, in a life recovery fashion. Um, and, and you know, we don't all have the same story. We are all unique individual beings, and we all have a different version of what, of how the word recovery serves us.

And, and that can be a very broad range, but I think it is so important that we, we see. That recovery isn't just that piece of I need to remove this, something from my life and, and recover from that, because that's generally speaking a very narrow perspective. There are so many things that we need to heal and recover from, whether that be traumatic experiences or death, um, or.

You know, trauma. Oh, I said trauma already. But anyway, there are so many things that we need to recover from and they, they aren't all catastrophic and some are anyway. You know, Necole is not a stranger to this space. She's been here. She's, you know, she's talked a little bit about her story and she's shared all about her love and passion for what she does.

But today, she's here to share with, About her life recovery journey and what that looked like for her. Um, and, and this is of course, all in the efforts of us to just continue to spread the words of hope to others. That, that there is, you know, that there is, um, life outside of struggle. Hi Necole. Welcome back.

Hello. Hello. Thank you so much for having me. Um, I am happy to be back and to just share and, um, hope you're well.

Oh, awesome. Awesome. Well, I obviously know a lot of your story because I've known you now for, gosh, over a year.

Yea, that's wild. That's true. Yeah, Yeah, yeah.

Cause we met at the beginning of the pandemic.

We did. We did.

Which means it's been closer to three. Oh my gosh.

Insane in the membrane when you think about it, but yes, that would be correct.

Well, so I know so much about your story, so I don't wanna shortchange it by, by jumping in in the wrong spot. Yeah. Um, but absolutely want you to start from your own place of comfort, but, um, it, I think it is just so inspiring

Oh, so well, yeah. Um, for me, the, I would say that the main. Catalyst in my journey of like just dealing with a recovery of sorts. Uh, was a car accident that I had and the accident was, I think now it's like a little over eight years now. So, you know, eight years ago, I mean, physically I was in such a different place.

Um, it was, uh, one of those freak accidents that, uh, you could have with a car accident. Wasn't much that I could do to evade it. It was. A car going in the oncoming direction. Flew over a meridian, hit me head on at 95 kilometers. I think the officers at the scene said that he flew 120 feet, his car caught on fire and was on Twitter.

It was a big deal, right? And so, wow. And that took place, I should preface on a Sunday morning before 9:00 AM It was only myself and that person on the road. And the way that this road was situation situated was it was, um, like two-way roadway with a meridian in the middle. But then on my right side was like a back bike path running path.

And then the. So when the car flew over, like there wasn't really anywhere that you could kind of go. I just kind of saw it happening and I was like, This is happening. It felt like it was a movie cuz everything kinda, I was gonna say that sounds like it would've been just so surreal, but surreal. That's exactly what it was.

What? Yeah, that's ex Yeah, yeah, exactly. All of those things. Yeah. So, uh, uh, I'm thankful that the injuries that I faced was what they call soft tissue injuries. But, um, I should also preface that soft tissue injuries will last with you for a very long time. Don't let it get it twisted. My friends, even though, you know, I didn't have broken bones and all of that, I had bruising.

I had like a nose bleed at the beginning and all that stuff. Soft tissue injuries does take a while, so when it, You know, one of the first things that I'm gonna have to deal with friends is pain, because that is one of the major things that I felt. You know, the day of, and then of course, you know, every day thereafter.

And imagine that emotionally also, right? Like I get it there. They're, and I, and I have these visions when I'm driving in certain spaces and. It drives me crazy because it's actually kind of a source of anxiety for me. Mm-hmm. . But it's when you know there isn't an escape path.

So I would imagine that there was a lot of emotional struggle, um, you know, watching it happen. Absolutely. Having nowhere to go. Absolutely. And then, and then experiencing. And then going to the hospital and, and you know, that whole process.

Yeah. And, and on top of that whole process, I love how you, you in included that emotional aspect of things is that for me, we both went to the same hospital.

So, yeah, and so we were both in the hallway at the same time, so it was just a lot of emotions when you see the person that has now put you in this situation. Like we were literally in the same bay.

.....

Join Tricia and Guest Moyra Gorski this Wednesday as they discuss stress, coping and improving our strategies & methods for self-soothing!

___________________________________________________________________

Hello. Hello everybody. Welcome back to Mastering the Drop, A real view of recovery where every week I have a wonderful special guest come in and have a, an amazing conversation with me about. The different in various ways that we recover from whatever it is that's holding us hostage and keeping us from really experiencing the life that we so desire to be living.

Um, and also sometimes they share their stories. But today I have my very special guest, Moyra Gorski, and, and we are gonna be talking. All about, Hmm. Who, the stressors of the season, uh, coping, effective, self soothing, but really, you know, just leaning in and putting ourselves in a position of first place.

And, and really looking at what we are doing for self care, especially for a recovery journey. But first I wanna invite Mora to say hello and introduce herself and tell you a little bit about herself. Hi, Moyra.

Hi. Hi. Thank you for having me. Such a thrill. It's always, always wonderful to have a conversation with you.

Um, so thank you for having me here. Uh, my name is Moyra Gorski. I am a retired nurse, um, entrepreneur and podcaster. Um, I have been, uh, branded together with, um, a natural wellness company for the last 22 years. So I help people live healthy lives, um, and I also mentor emerging entrepreneurs to have their own online wellness

business. And during this journey of entrepreneurship in life, I also, um, well, we're gonna talk about, you know, has gone, have gone through a tremendous amount of stress and had to learn how to cope with that and in the midst of life. Um, in college I recovered from an eating disorder and my daughter has been on a seven year journey of her own, where I stand by her side and cheer her on.

Um, but because of that, Started a podcast to share stories of hope in recovery, um, and my journey through watching a loved one. On their, um, on their recovery path. And so I do, uh, host that podcast to have for two and a half years. And just really my message to everybody is that, you know, we can live abundant, happy lives.

Um, if we have a smile and a little bit of juggling, um, we can just, again, live those, live a good, um, abundant life. So really thrilled to be here, um, to just have a, another conversation with you about this.

I know when, when we get on a roll, we get on a roll and I promise y'all we're gonna, we're gonna try, try to keep it to, you know, a, a nice condensed space.

But man, sometimes we get in there and it's good and it's meaty. But, you know, right now, and we were talking a little bit beforehand about this, you know, the, the funny phenomena of the holiday season, um, and how, you know, Right now we're sitting in that space where it's like, Oh, we're, you know, we're going into the holiday season.

And, and I always kind of chuckle because, you know, that that holiday season looks like, you know, uh, starting with Halloween and then, and then you go to, you know, Thanksgiving and then, and then you have, you know, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day. And then, you know, if, if you know you're listening and, and you do Hanukkah, then of course, you know, you've got an, you know, an extra week in there.

But we're really looking at, you know, very isolated days, right? very isolated days at best a week. Right? And, and we, we truly get so immersed and so engolfed. And so, you know, overtaken by these things, right? So, I mean, I, I just, I'm in awe, like social media, you know, just all the things in, in every area of my life.

Like September, people were already rolling out Halloween and, and here we are, you know, Yesterday was, um, the ninth of October, depending on what day, but you're listening to this, um, you know, I was at Home Depot and, and they were playing Christmas carols and had all the Christmas stuff out and a very small section for Halloween, like it had already been pilford over.

And, and I'm like, Wait, you know, like, what's going on here? You know? And then so I was thinking about it and. As, as social beings, you know, we tend to lean into this holiday season and we get really stressed out. So I was thinking about it and really we get down to it. We have, you know, these spaces, but I was trying to think of a month where I don't hear from somebody that there is something going on, right?

That that is an ' I will, when or if' situation about improving their lifestyle, about reducing their stressors, about, you know, getting into a life recovery journey of some sort. Or just, you know, in, in regular conversation isn't feeling overwhelmed about something. Because if you look at it, we have New Year's in January, then there's Valentine's Day.

Um, March. There's St. Patrick's Day. Then April we have I Easter and we have tax season, you know. Then in May we have Mother's Day. You know, and, and then, um, June, there's Father's Day, then there's Summer, and then there's the 4th of July, and somewhere in there there's Memorial Day. And, and then we get into, you know, back to school season.

And then there's um, uh, Labor Day, and then we're, here we are again. It's up. There is just something all the time, that is an added either stressor or excuse to put down our healthy behaviors, and an effective lifestyle, if you will. Right? We give up for the weekends, we give it up for the summer.

We, you know, whatever it is, there's always 'A something' and so, I don't, I don't experience that in my life because I just don't operate that way. I, you know, I kind of take things in stride. Uh, you know, the week at a glance, I guess, if you will, like today we're recording, um, on what is a holiday. Um, and I didn't even realize it was a holiday.

I don't even know which holiday it is.

Yeah. Columbus Day. It is columbus day

Columbus Day. Right. And, and so again, there's just always something and we complain about the stressors, but then our coping doesn't, doesn't mirror or look like something that says, I want my life to feel better, look better, be more calm and relaxed.

.....

"I think it's that what I talk about so much is that choice that we make. We can say, Well that's great. I'm looking forward to seeing my kids at Christmas time.

Or oh my gosh, I then I'm gonna have six people in the house and I have to cook and I have to clean, and then I have to meal prep and I have to, you know, it's like those choices that we make" - Moyra Gorski

This week, join Tricia as she listens to Special Guest Allison Hammond share her journey through alcohol addiction and into recovery! Buckle up for this one! You aren't going to want to miss out on this transformative story!

_____________________________________________________________________

Hello. Hello everybody. Welcome back to Mastering the Drop, A Real View of Recovery. This is going to be, Well, I just, I just like to say this. These are some of my favorite interviews because they are, Not necessarily, um, on something specific that we need to learn, but we get so much enrichment from them, and that's because I have some amazing friends and connections and, and people inside of this, this whole recovery world that is so vast that, that are kind enough and generous enough to, to enter into this space.

And, and share their journeys, their stories, whatever that might look like, however long or short or whatever it is, um, come in and share it with us. And, and to me it's such a blessing because it, it normalizes it for so many people. So today, We have again, Allison Hammond. She is back. We've heard from her before, but today, she's gonna share with us more about her personal side of this, but just to reintroduce you to her; Dr.

Allison Hammond has a dancer's heart. And loves to help people actually choreograph their life inside their community through graphic facilitation of people centered planning. And it is such an amazing, beautiful thing. And she will tell us, um, later on, you know, how her recovery journey actually carried her or brought her into the beautiful work that she does. But for now, we're just gonna say hello to Allison. Hi. Welcome back. Thank you so much for coming and being open to share your recovery journey because so many people keep it tight to the vest. And, you know, I, I think, I don't know, we all know there's, there's those people that are, you know, are real loud.

And out, out loud, I should say, about their journeys. And then there are some, so many that, that just don't, don't really know how to share their voice to help another. So anyway, I thank you so much for being here.

Thank you so much Tricia.

So how long have you been on this thing called a A recovery journey?

Well, the recovery journey really started about three and a half years ago. Um, when I, um, well, do you want me to start from the beginning? My whole journey?

Yes, go for it. Let's, let's hear about that.

Yeah. Because the, actually my recovery's part, the shortest part of my journey, but the best part, um, and I have found that with my other, some of my friends that I have shared my story with, it's been very important because they too, were struggling and, um, didn't, didn't want to admit it or were afraid.

And when they hear my story as you. It normalized it or it take, took, takes away some of the stigma, I think because the way I presented myself in the world when I was drinking was very few people knew how much I drank. So anyway, um, I do like to start my story by saying that alcohol, cuz that's, that's my addiction, that's my disease.

Um, alcohol's a family member, um, when I was a little girlin the 60's, my grandfather used to give my sister and I cocktails starting about when I was probably around eight years old because they were gonna teach me how to drink. And so looking back on it, now that I've explored more in my journey with alcohol, I realize that.

I liked it and it wasn't because I got attention, it wasn't because I felt like I was a big girl. I just liked the feeling. And as I look back over my journey, there were times when I had, um, alcohol, like in high school and back then the drinking age was 18. So somebody's older sibling always. Was buying US wine or something.

And I really liked it. And if I look back over it, I, I drank probably more than my friends, but I didn't know that. I thought everybody else.....

In college I would take those little quizzes in magazines too, cuz I was thinking maybe I've got a problem.

But the way I would answer the questions, I mean, I knew how to answer the questions. I wasn't an alcoholic. So , um, moving forward then I, um, I got married and my husband and I were trying to have children. And so during those years I really did not drink that much because I was aware that, um, I wanted to be pregnant.

I, I was very aware of how the effects of alcohol on during a pregnancy, et cetera, so I didn't, and. But my husband and I, we had, we did, we've got our beautiful son. It took us five years to have him, and then we were trying to have another baby and that didn't work. And when my son was about four, looking back, I really fell off a cliff.

My husband traveled a lot and so I was home. Um, I did have a job, but I was home with my son and in the evenings, um, I just would, he, I'd put him to bed and I would just drink and. But then that started getting earlier ear earlier in the day. And one time my husband came home and I'm passed out in the middle of the living room floor.

And my son, who was six, is just wandering around and who knows how long I had been passed out. And so at that point I did take a hiatus from drinking and I didn't drink very much for about three years. . Um, again, looking back, I was just not drinking. Um, I wouldn't say that I was, was recovered. I just was choosing not to drink.

.....

"I Facebook messaged her and said, Will you please meet with me? I have a problem. And she. Well, first of all, she said, Are you drunk now? I said, Yes. Are you safe? Yes. And she said, I want you to meet me at this meeting tomorrow. And so I did. And the relief I felt when I finally reached out for help from other people was un-believable" - Allison Hammond

In this episode, Tricia is joined by guest, Grieving Coach, Jenny Dilts. Jenny shares some insight and wisdom on the importance of the grieving process and finding gratitude within it.

___________________________________________________________________

Hello. Hello everybody. Welcome back to Mastering the Drop, A real view of recovery where we don't just talk about the standard soci societal view of what addiction and recovery are. We talk about all of life recovery. This week is absolutely no exception. In fact, this this week, um, is probably one of the most prevalent spaces where we find that people need to have a life recovery journey.

In fact, I know many of you who are listening, you're listening for that very reason because we had the conversation about, Wow, you need to hear what my guest has to say in this episode. And, and so you know that that situation is grief and we grieve so many things. We grieve the loss of loved ones. We grieve the loss of relationships.

We grieve having to change our relationship with food and alcohol. , we grieve, you know, just the changing, ever changing thing called life and how things morph. What we don't know and what we most of us don't do is when we grieve, find that space of gratitude to add in. In fact, most people look at me and they're like, What the heck?

Gratitude. How am I supposed to find gratitude in this space? Don't you know I'm hurting here? Like I'm struggling. Like I, there's nothing to be grateful for. So, Instead of listening to me who's not an expert on grief , um, but, but an expert on finding gratitude. I, you know, I wanted to bring Jenny in here, um, to, to share with us on a deeper level.

She's been here before, but I wanted her to come and share with us exactly what we need to know about how, how grief and gratitude can coexist, Right? So with, with no further ado, everybody, this is Jenny.

Um, and, and she, I'm gonna, Jenny, I'm gonna let you introduce yourself because it's just easier that way I don't have to mutilate anything. Um, but, uh, Jenny, introduce yourself. Thank you again so much for coming back to share more of your wisdom with us. I loved hearing your story the last time, but wow.

We're so ready for your wisdom.

Thank you so much for having me on again. It's such a pleasure. Um, I'm Jenny Dilts and I'm the founder of Grieving Coach. I'm also the host of the podcast, "Share Your Story, Exploring Humanity, One Heart at a Time". And I stand as a lighthouse for grief. Um, I help people convert grief into growth in whatever way that looks like for them.

One of my biggest passions is helping people find their own way to grieve in their own time, in their own way that's unique to them because all of us are unique. . And so I do this through educating, supporting, and inspiring people in the field of grief.

That is so amazing. That is so amazing. And I, I think my favorite part of what you just said is that we are all unique.

And, and so, you know, I've seen so many people trying to go in order of the book, right? Like mm-hmm. the different stages, and they try to force themselves to go into order, right? Like, I should be at this stage and I'm, I'm at this stage, and then I thought I was at this stage and now I'm at this stage. And they, they, they try so hard to do their grieving process perfect.

Um, and, and that perfection that they're striving for in their grieving process. Is based on somebody else's you know, version. And the part that they're not hearing is that you are unique and how you are experiencing this grief is going to be unique to you. Absolutely. And, and that it, it's not gonna go in any specific order and, and it may ebb and flow and it, and it may bounce around and you may be in one stage more than once.

In fact, I think the last time we chatted, we, you know, we were talking about how it doesn't necessarily end mm-hmm. , it just changes. Mm-hmm. . Um, so, so let's talk about that because I know everybody's dying to hear. So we'll just cut to the. Right. Um, and so to speak, right. But gratitude in a, in a state of grieving, like how, how does that, how does that, in its simplest form, how does that translate?

So if you're not at that stage of gratitude, that's. It's okay to be in the very raw, painful, dark place of grief that's actually very healthy. If we, and I'm, I'm going to preface this with, if we jump to that gratitude stage too quickly, we rob ourselves of the opportunity to really grow from our grief to really experience it.

.....

"That's the key, facing it. Facing it every single day because when we feel the pain, when we experience the pain, That's when the growth and the healing occurs." - Jenny Dilts

Join Tricia in this special episode of Mastering the Drop with Special Guest Tom Tenney, CEO and Founder of 12th Step. Listen as Tom shares his bit of his journey into recovery and what 12th step is all about!

_____________________________________________________________________

Hello, hello everybody. Welcome back to Mastering the Drop, A Real View of Recovery. This is one of my very favorite special episodes where we actually get to hear and experience. Real life stories of real people making real change and making a big difference in our, I'm, I'm gonna just say community, I guess, if you will, because it's, it's more than just a community because it's profession, it's, it's livelihood.

it's Personal relationships, it's all kinds of things, but you know, so in this community of, of people who are passionate about life recovery, whatever that journey may look like, I just love when we get to actually have these wonderful, organic conversations and, and record them. For, for everybody else to actually get to hear because without technology today, we would not get to hear so much that really enriches our life, that really helps us feel valid, uh, valued worthy.

Um, and, and so I just love doing these special, these special, um, spotlights on people that I know that I value and that I just really am impressed by. So anyway, without further ado, my, my guest today, and I hope I say this correctly, is Tom Tenney. And got it. Right. Right. Um, Tom is the CEO of an organization called 12th Step.

And 12th Step Fosters healthy connections and hope for, for those who are in, in difficult moments of addiction recovery, in treatment through the creation of care package services, that is in alignment with each person's treatment goals. Anyway, it's super awesome. Can't wait for you to hear about it.

However, I'm gonna make you wait a little bit because my favorite part is, is hearing how Tom even got this space to, to come up with and create something that I think is probably one of the most beautiful things for that assertive continuum of care process in addiction treatment. So Tom, I'm gonna welcome you here.

Say hello. Introduce yourself, but tell us, how do you even get into this journey? I know you have a recovery story and I've heard it, and we just want everybody else to experience you as well.

Well, thank you, Tricia. It's a pleasure to be on here today and share my story and a little bit about why I do the things.

I do, um, I've learned in my life that, uh, there's really two days that are important in our lives. One is the day we're born, and two is the day we find out why. And, um, you know, I finally got to that point, uh, gosh, it was, you know, 38 years after being born, they started figuring out why I was born and what I'm supposed to be doing.

My story is, is not unlike, um, a large majority of us who, who suffer addiction. Um, I don't have a grandiose story where I, you know, had these adventures or these horrible, horrible things. Um, I'm like a lot of us, I, I started my addiction after a major surgery. Um, when I was 20 years old, I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease.

And I had to have a major stomach surgery. And while I was in the hospital, um, I was introduced to Dilaudid. And truth is, I didn't wanna leave , I didn't wanna leave the hospital. Um, because I became instantly in, uh, enthralled with that. Um, I grew up a very strong Christian young man, and after I left the hospital, they did prescribe me with, um, Vicodin, and that was the, the second best thing to Dilaudid.

Um, and so I, you know, I, I did, as a lot of people do, um, I suffered a lot of pain, so I felt absolutely justified in asking the doctor for continued prescriptions. And, um, the pain didn't subside for, uh, quite a while. Um, it took about six months for the doctor to finally say, Tom, um, yeah, you really don't, you don't need this anymore.

So I did go through, um, you know, detox and, and withdrawal, um, where you're, you know, at night having cold sweats, and your wife wanting to know like, what's going on. Um, And so my story is very similar to a lot of people, um, who are currently suffering addiction. And that's, that's my basic story about how, uh, you know, I understood what addiction is like.

.....

"The truth is, uh, treatment and recovery is not an individual thing. It's a family thing. It's something that everyone needs in that process." - Tom Tenney

Join Tricia and her guest Jacqueline Wales in this episode of Mastering the Drop! Listen along as they share How to Treat Yourself and Others Better! Learn the importance of improving self-esteem and bringing esteem to your relationships.

___________________________________________________________________

Hello everybody. Welcome back to another episode of Mastering the Drop, A real view of recovery, and I have to say. That I am in a different type of recovery space this morning. As we, as we step into our conversation and our topic for the day, I'm in a space of recovery, um, after a very invigorating, inspiring, and purposeful weekend filled with being with hundreds of people in recovery, but also

people that are in service to people in recovery. So I was in the presence of therapists, treatment facilities, doctors, uh, psychiatrist, psychologists, educators, and we were all there together to ensure that we were staying at the top of our game, in in our delivery to services for society, regardless of what level of severity of addiction you may be struggling with.

Right. Because there are different levels of severity from. You know, the, the high severity where we need to actually be removed from our environment and, and be helped at a much deeper level, but to those levels of severity where we're just having, you know, problems in our relationship with alcohol. We don't, you know, it's not, it's not derailing our life, but, you know, it could be alcohol, could be food, it could be, you know, people pleasing or overbooking your calendar, but that's a level of severity that might be considered low, severity, but still needing of service. Anyway, so I was with all of these folks and so today I'm in a recovery space from that, right, like that calm down space, which has made it super important for me to focus right on our topic for today. And I thought, Wow, how amazing and uncanny that we're talking about treat yourself and others better.

And, and, and it, you know, my very first thing I did was look. How do I need to treat myself today and what do I need to do? But anyway, before that, you know, it, it's, it's nothing short of a miracle that, that my guest, Ms. Jacqueline Wales, is here with me today because she also is very in tune with, giving to ourselves, giving of ourselves to others and how that balance really has a special way that it needs to operate and function. Anyway, I'm gonna let Miss Jacqueline Whales introduce herself so that she can tell you all of the wonderful things about herself before we dive in.

All right, Tricia, thank you so much and I'm glad we're in recovery mode today because I think every day is is of a recovery of some nature.

So I'm all for that. So I'm Jacqueline Wales and I am the author of 'The Fearless Factor' and 'The Fearless Factor At Work', I have spent over 40 years understanding and exploring the issues that come with being fearful and what it does to you in terms of your behaviors, your thinking, and the quality of life that you create because of it.

And so I'm all about helping individuals to overcome their fears. To understand how they can truly step into the fullness of who they are and really bring their full potential to the world. And recently, I created an online program called Transformational Strategies for Success. Which really does look at who are you, where do you wanna go, and most importantly, what is it that's getting in the way?

And that's all of that limited thinking. The negative stuff, the ways in which we criticize ourselves, the attitudes that we have, all of that stuff that is absolutely aligned with the. Fear, which primarily is an emotion and one that has absolutely no validity because it's based on the stories we tell ourselves, and many of the ways in which we treat ourselves and don't treat ourselves is a result of that negative thinking and fearful thinking about what we think we are or who we think we are and what we think we're capable.

So I'm happy to be having this conversation today about how do we treat ourselves and how do you treat others, because clearly the old adage of, you know, how you treat yourself is how or how you treat other people is how you wanna be treated is absolutely right on. So let's give that some air time today.

Yeah, absolutely. Wow. Thank you. I mean, it's always just such a pleasure to, to just hear you even talk about the work that you do, even in your description of it. It's, it's useful, it's beneficial, it's helpful, and it is so great. And, and you know, I think. You know, as I step into that, that space that says, you know, I'm in, I'm in a, you know, I'm gonna recover today from, you know, the last three days.

That doesn't mean I'm gonna sit down and, and do nothing right. But I am gonna treat myself with loving kindness. Um, and it, and it starts with, you know, a slower pace, right? More, more thought. And more space into that, that, that space for thought before going into action. So, you know, um, you know, just really allowing time to, you know, let that knee jerk instant gratification.

Um, pull to always be in motion, letting that go, right? Like we feel like we always have to be in motion. And so for me, um, you know, when I, when I'm doing things like being productive, I feel just as productive being still and, handwriting out a plan, right? Like just handwriting out anything that might be swir swirling around in my mind.

.....

"So you have to be able to say some clear boundaries on what works for you, because again, if you're thinking about taking good care of you, which is when you use the word treat yourself, this is not just a partial gift that you give yourself. This is not something that comes in a box. This is really all about how do I wish to be respected?" - Jacqueline Wales

Hello. Again, everybody. Thank you so much for joining us for another episode of Mastering The Drop, A Real View of Recovery. These are my favorite interviews and, and those are the ones where we actually just get to hear other people's stories, other people's journeys and where they started, how they got here.

All of the things, and today is no exception to that. Um, I've been watching these ladies for some time on social media and, and I'm so blessed and so thankful that they have chosen to join me. Um, and I'm going to let them each inter introduce themselves, but we have Mary and Chelsea here with us today and they've started something super amazing.

And very revolutionary, I believe. Um, and I'm quite envious of them, but we're gonna save that for a little bit later. Um, anyway, who wants to go first?

I'll go first!

Chelsey, Yay! Okay, everybody. This is Chelsey and I just want you to listen and lean in and hear a little bit of her story because it's just so powerful.

Hello everyone. I'm Chelsey. I'm 26 years old and I am the co-owner of sober. Um, I started drinking when I was about 16 years old drank heavily for eight years. Got myself in just every amount of trouble you could ever imagine. I had two DWIs by the time I was 23 and when I was sitting in jail, I just knew that.

My luck had ran out and that I needed to stop. Otherwise I was gonna get in more trouble and it, this just wasn't the life that I wanted to lead. So I got sober the day after my 24th birthday on November 25th, 2019. And yeah, it was, it's been an incredible journey. My first year. I just pretty much practiced, you know, not drinking and.

Yeah, that's kind of how MJ and I got rekindled. Um, we started working together again and yeah. That's a bit about me!

Wow! Well, and I think, you know, that's, I can relate, I had also two DUIs by the time I was 23. Unfortunately for me, it just taught me how not to drink and drive because I didn't actually give up alcohol until I was 43.

I spent a lot of time trying to figure it out, how to keep it in my life. Mm-hmm so definitely my hat is off to you because, well, I know now and you know, now that well life can look a whole lot easier. yeah. When, when you have a clear mind, Right before we get rolling. Cuz I know me, I can get, you know, into a big old conversation pretty quick like, um, Mary, tell us a little bit about you.

My name is Mary. Um, I am 30 years old. I am also co-owner of Sober Sallys. I have been in the se I've been a bartender in the service industry for nine plus years now. Um, I. Struggled with drug and alcohol abuse since I was about 16 as well. And again, spent a little bit of time figuring out how I can incorporate it in my life rather than just ixnaying it out.

Um, a lot of my sobriety, um, is in the choice to be sober or alcohol free, um, goes to Chelsea. Uh, we worked together at one point in life when we were both heavily using separated for a while, came back together and she was truly an inspiration and a reason why I decided to make that choice.

.....

"It could be just the bonfire or it could be your best friend's 29th birthday, you know, like getting out in a social and public setting when newly becoming sober. Probably is one of the hardest things, because you have to learn to say no. And in, you know, depending on where you are telling them your story, if you feel comfortable and, or not." - Chelsey Noack

"Even just our personal friends and family know, you know, something we preach is sober, not boring. I still wanna be invited. Yeah. I still wanna come. We might not, oh, maybe not come, but I definitely still wanna invite." - Mary Jackson

Hello, everybody. Welcome back to mastering the drop a real view of recovery. Today, we are going to be talking about something that is very unique. Um, well, in theory, it's very unique, but as a concept, as a practice, as a way, We do things. It is, it is a very unique practice to Turning Leaves. And so I I'm really excited to, to have a conversation about it today.

And I'm very excited to be having Allison here with me today to have the conversation, cuz it is always so fun when somebody, you know, is willing to come in and, and share about their journey and their experiences, whether they've worked with me or not worked with me in the past, just so that we can have a genuine, authentic, transparent conversation for others on a journey to hear.

And, and, and with this particular topic, it really illuminates for people that, that our recovery journeys get to belong to us. And they get to look, feel, be however we want them to be, need them to be aspire for them to be. And, and so hopefully if y'all are listening really well and taking, maybe even taking some notes, you know, you might get some ideas of some things that you can do.

To get you in a little bit more of a forward moving momentum. Anyway, Allison, welcome. Thank you so much for being here,

Thank you so much. I really appreciate it. Appreciate the opportunity to talk about this topic.

Oh, great. Well, before we get started, because I know you, but you know, others, maybe don't have, haven't had the opportunity to meet you just yet.

Can you, can you. Introduce yourself. Sure. Tell us what you want us to know about you before we start our fun conversation.

Sure. So I'm Allison Hammond. Um, I live in Kalamazoo, Michigan, which Michigan is shaped like a mitten. So I live right here and, um, I actually am. I was thinking about this when Tricia asked me, so my background actually is in dance and in a roundabout way, I ended up being a facilitator, a graphic facilitator, meaning I take graphic notes while people are facilitating.

And what I've been thinking about lately, when people ask me that is that. Dance is learning choreography. So I'm really good at choreographing people to help them make plans for the future. And, um, I, yeah, I met Tricia through, um, a networking group and we hit it off and we found out that we have a lot in common and she invited me to have this conversation.

And so here I am,

The work you do is so fascinating. I can't even tell you guys it's so fascinating. Um, and, and we all get to. Our space, right? We all get to our space through a journey, which I cannot wait for our next episode for everybody to listen to. But we'll tell, talk about that a little bit more in a little bit but, um, you know, we all get here in a certain way.

And, and I know that I have a very solid list of, of go to skill sets and tactics. That I utilized that I rely on still today, 10 years in, or almost 10 years, everybody. Uh, I tend to shift my years really early and I'm super early this year. Anyway, um, going on 10 years, you know, now I've been using these same skill sets and tactics in all areas of my life and their, you know, psychological skill sets and tactics.

That, that I've converted to serve me. I add edit, delete, change, shift, morph them to fit whatever situation, category of life. Topic, whatever it might be, I've figured out how to do that so that I can incorporate them into my life instead of trying to fit my life into somebody else's method or modality.

Right. And I think that's a, a place where people get kind of stuck. Right. They get stuck. They, they look, you know, they go to the Tony Robbs and I love Tony Robbins. He's he's, he's a pretty cool dude, but, but I like to use him as a, as a visualization, right. We go to this big event and, and we're sitting in this room with hundreds of people and, and maybe, you know, we go through this whole thing and we're all feeling great.

Rah RA. . But then we, we look at the results and we see that maybe five people, 10 people got the results that they went there for and the rest are like, how come, how come it's not happening that way for me. And what I found in the 10 years of observing and working with people is that they they're more focused on the method and the modality and the, the.

Oh, gosh, what do I wanna say? The, the nuts and bolts of it, I guess, instead of how can this serve me in my life? It's how can I, and you know, most people come at it as, how can I be more like this other person? How can I do like everybody else is doing, because I want what everybody else is doing. So there's this big comparison competition, yada yada, instead of, Hey, let me incorporate this stuff.

For me for me, cuz we're unique beings. And that's where I came up with the added delete because it, everything needed to be shifted, tweaked or adjusted to fit me. Right. I'm I'm guessing that you had, you know, some, some tactics, um, or ways of being, doing things that along the way, um, you found served you.

I do. And I think it's so interesting. You brought up that example, um, of Tony Robbins, because I just was on a webinar where I got some great, great tips from, um, this person about speaking and, uh, public speaking. And I came away with it with some good tips. But I also, I guess, part of it's my age, , you know, I realize I can take what I want from it and leave the other behind.

And so, and as I was watching all the other people get really fired up, you know, they were, I'm assuming many of them were younger than I. And so maybe that's the first time they heard some of this, but I've been public speaking most of my life. I'm very comfortable public speaking, but I did learn some tips about how to organize, um, some of my speaking.

I guess, um, when I got your notes about, you know, um, add, edit and delete, I started thinking about what are some things, um, now that I've been in recovery, which is a new phase in my life. And so one of the things that I've learned is what we talk about that I've really added to my life is that notion of pausing and reflecting.

Instead of the automatic responses I may have had in my life. And so that pause has become really important to me because as I've gone through, um, my recovery journey, you know, new things pop up all the time that are behaviors that I realize now were habits. They came out of my past experiences. They came because that's all I knew to do.

Welcome back to Mastering the Drop!

This week's episode, we welcome guest, Necole Hines, founder and owner of 'Faded Living'. Listen in as Tricia and Necole explore communicating with elegance and sharing Necole's knowledge of plant based medicine!

___________________________________________________________________

Well, hello, everybody. Welcome back to Mastering the Drop, A Real View of Recovery um, this week's topic is a very. Awesome topic. Um, you know, it's, it's really about, you know, stepping into ourselves and, and the, and, and acknowledging the journey that, that takes us there or got us there. And, and it helps us really celebrate ourselves, um, at, at a.

At a level or in a fashion that we would probably not normally mm-hmm anyway, I can't wait for you guys to join us in this conversation. I have a very special friend of mine, a long time friend. We haven't been in the same space for some time, but. But Necole and I met some time ago, I'd say early on in the pandemic.

Yes. Um, one of those first relationships of, Hey, this is really cool. Like we're all out here getting to know each other and Necole's with 'Faded Living', but I'm gonna let her introduce herself, Necole, hello!

Hi. Hi. How are you doing? Oh my goodness. Thank you so much for having me today.

Oh, it's my pleasure.

Yay. I'm happy to be here. Um, hi everyone. I will, you know, give you a little quick spiel about who I am. I am Necole Hines. I live out in Vancouver, BC, Canada, and I founded a company called Faded Living. Basically when I first started this company, it was to normalize the use of cannabis. But as I have progressed with this company, I have also started to get into herbal, um, education and really starting to study all the other different herbs. Cannabis I consider herb as well because I cook with it. That's a lot of the education that I teach, but, um, I also have been gardening this summer. And so learning about the benefits of other herbs, I kind of am including cannabis in the, um, mix of things and teaching people how you can incorporate herbs into your daily life to help with wellness and bringing balance to your days.

So, um, that's pretty much, um, what I've been trying to do with the company and I've done it in a few different ways. Uh, I offer workshops mainly, uh, through food because that's one of the great ways to kind of, uh, teach people how to. Infuse herbs into their lives with, um, um, especially in ways that can reduce sugar intake, because I find that, uh, in a lot of infusions that are out on the market, there is a high sugar intake, um, you know, uh, input when it comes to some of the, um, pastries, etc., right?

And so I teach people how to create infusions, to make savory dishes so that the sugar intake is low. If not completely. Nonexistent. And you realize that you can add it to your day, whether it's like creating an infused salad dressing, either using one, um, uh, lavender or time or cannabis. Um, and, uh, you know, you can really kind of add it throughout your day.

So that's one of the ways that I, um, have. Uh, spread the message through my company. And another way that I've done it is through a podcast. So I do have a podcast called 'Faded Living & Friends' where I've chatted with a, uh, a diverse group of people in the cannabis space from all various backgrounds.

Uh, Really spanning the globe. I've had some guests from the UK, the US, Canada, basically kind of sharing, um, what they do in the space and how they're connected to the plant, etc. So those are the two main ways that I've been able to share, um, how you can incorporate plants and herbs to your life.

Well, I love it and Necole as you know, and, and, and for those that don't know it, they will be getting to, to know more about, about it, but I'm super passionate about, you know, the, the, how we fuel our body and what we use and what we put in and the effectiveness of it.

And knowing, knowing how to hear what our body is telling it, us that it needs, because it's not something that you're gonna find. You know, some fad diet or routine. Um, although, you know, that may work for some people, it, it doesn't work, you know, completely, um, the efficacy of it varies from individual to individual and, and we all have to know our own tweaks, but all of us benefit from reducing and, or removing refined sugars from our life.

And, and there are so many different things that we can use instead of. Right, right. Instead of in place of that, that are so much more beneficial.

Catch this week's episode of Mastering the Drop with our guest Dr. Melissa Balizan! Listen in as we discuss what emotional intelligence is and how vital it is for our everyday life!

______________________________________________________

Hello. Hello everybody. Welcome back to Mastering the Drop, A Real View of Recovery.. Excuse me, while I get comfortable. Um, today is one of my favorite topics. Um, I know I say that all the time, but having this conversation with my very wonderful esteemed guest, Dr. Melissa makes it even more interesting and intriguing, but, you know, Emotional intelligence being our topic of conversation is something that a lot of people overlook or think that they have slash possess only, hmm. They really don't have a complete, um, a completeness with it. They, and a lot of that's because there's not a complete understanding of what really creates emotional intelligence for people. So gaining. This knowledge and creating a, a space where we can improve, grow, change, shift, morphe of our personal confidence inside of this is, is super important.

So before I bring miss, miss Melissa in here with us, um, I thought, well, gosh, let's, let's define. Emotional intelligence for everybody just so that they get like the short version. Right? So emotional intelligence is the ability to monitor one's own and other people's emotions ha to discriminate between different emotions and label them appropriately and to use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior.

So we're talking impulse control, we're talking. Um, distress tolerance, emotion, regulation, um, just this really deep self-awareness again, this, so the self-regulation social skills, empathy and motivation. So there's, there's a lot that goes into this and it's an amazing, it's an amazing journey. So anyway, Dr.

Melissa, welcome. Welcome.

Thank you having you here. Thank you. I'm so glad to be back, Tricia.

Thanks! Um, you know, I know we had, you know, little chat before we started, but, you know, I know I could talk for hours about my journey and cultivating, you know, the emotional intelligence to the level I'm at now, you know, 10 years into this awesome lifestyle that I've created for myself, but, but you know what people like to hear from other people so, you know, I wanted, I wanted you to share, you know, your personal and professional journey with, with, um, emotional intelligence and how it serves you in your personal life and your professional life.

Sure. So for me, emotional intelligence has been a key part of my life for a very long time, probably even before it was, let's say discovered even it's been out there, but you know, somebody writes a book about it and then, oh, everybody talks about it. Um, so emotional intelligence as. When I started the workforce, um, you know, outside of babysitting let's, let's, let's qualify that

So, because I did start doing that young, and even that actually played a role with when you're taking care of those kiddos. Um, but when I started the workforce, when I was 16 years old, um, going in and going into that workforce and being able to, to understand who I am, and being able to understand who my employer is and my clients are at the time or the, the patrons that are coming in.

Um, when, when you walk in or you're talking to somebody and, and this, I, I go all the way back to there because. Now, um, cell phones were around, but not quite as popular as today, but I wanna use the illustration because somebody comes in to you. So I worked in a service industry. I still work in a service industry.

It was just a different, different, just different line of service. Um, but somebody comes in and is talking to you and you are. Talking to them or you're not paying attention to them. So, um, okay. So I was a receptionist, so I, I was sat down. They came in and asked me questions. Now, if I started looking down and doing this, whether they're talking to me that doesn't prove that I'm paying very close attention to my emotional intelligence, their, their emotional intelligence, because I'm ignoring them.

That's what they're thinking. I may be listening. But no I'm ignoring them. And let's fast forward to the cell phone age. Your best friend is talking to you and she's telling you this story about her child and all of this, these great things, or she's asking you a question about how, you know, you've already been there or done that.

And she wants to know, and you sit there and you're like, okay, tell me. And then you're like, right, you're not paying any attention to her. And she feels like you're not listening. You might be listening, but you're not actively listening. And this is all part of emotional intelligence. And I, I bring that story from way back into, in the current, because in my line of work, I didn't learn quite early enough on because I wasn't always.

Eye contact to start with because I was paying attention, but I could multitask and do a couple of things, but the emotional intelligence in the room was not perceived that way. And so I learned at a very young age to actively listen, when somebody's talking to you, if you need to look something up. Then you wait for them to finish and then you go look it up.

So we fast forward to where I'm at professionally. Now as a doctor or pharmacy people give me things. So I may be, I may have to take notes as I'm going through their, um, their assessment or they're talking to me, my ears perk up when somebody just talks and I can hear them in the, in the, or in a room.

And I hear medications or something, they'll say a certain medication or a certain disease state. And my ears are like popped up. But I'm talking to somebody here. So I need to give my full attention here. And that is the emotional intelligence of paying attention to knowing that I need to focus. And when I'm talking to Tricia, she's gonna feel that I hear her and that I see her.

and if I don't be distracted, then I'm actually gonna probably get more outta that conversation than me trying to listen over here to this, or listen over here to that. So when you're, when I'm doing professional interviews with, with my clients, I'm listening to them, I'm paying attention. I might draw a few notes down, but I'm not gonna do any major things.

I jot those notes down to maybe help me ask further question. Because that's where we need to go, but I'm paying actively attention, actively listening. So that's a key, that's a huge key piece. And I wanna say that if you, haven't learned to put your cell phone down, when you're talking to your spouse or your children or your best friend, then that's step number one.

Start with that.

Yes. Wow. I love that.

.....

In this week's episode of Mastering the Drop Tricia welcomes Human Biologist and Healthy Lifestyle Strategist, Jessica Brothers. Listen along as Jessica shares her journey in discovering the importance of living in the NOW and how self validation has changed her life.

Hello, everybody. Welcome. Welcome to mastering the drop a real view of recovery. I am so excited for today. Um, I know I say it all the time, but the topic is important. Especially in a life recovery journey, but my kids, I just have to say, I have a really new friend here with me today that I'm super excited about you all getting to witness us learn about each other.

Mm-hmm out loud and publicly. Um, but Jessica Brothers has done nothing, but intrigue me inspire me and, and just, you know, Really warm my soul, that there are just more people out there that are super passionate about people living the way that they desire. Anyway, I'm gonna let Jessica introduce herself.

Go really quick.

Absolutely. Thank you. First off, Tricia I feel that the same way. It's always a pleasure meeting someone in the same space as passionate about what they're doing as, as I feel I am. So thank you for having me. My name is Jessica Brothers. I am a human biologist. Yes. Uh, I'll explain what that means.

Um, you know, I help people get what they want. I'm an expert. Board certified expert health strategist. So I go inside the body, um, you know, symptoms of depression, anxiety, how we feel, stress PTSD, ADHD, ADD um, ex uh, You know, lack of sleep. All of those things are symptoms because something is off inside our body.

And that's what I do. I map out the inside of our body and support it by using the raw materials that our body needs so that we can feel really, really great, which is how we're supposed to feel. So that's a little bit about what I.

Oh, my God. So amazing. So amazing. And, and for the listeners that listen frequently, they all know I'm super passionate about what we put in and, and, and the deep work that we do in, in really investigating what we put in, but also the emotional purposes we assign to the things that we put in.

And, um, you know, I just find, you know, so many people. Even, even those that, that feel like, oh God, I'm super healthy. You know, they often they're just eating things out of order, um, or too much of something or too little of something. And, and, and it just really reeks havoc. Um, when we know, like, I don't know, most people, we know we need protein in the morning and if we're not getting protein in the morning and we're everything we eat in the morning, Is healthy, but converts to sugar.

It, yeah, we're gonna crash at noon. Right. Anyway, you know, so there's just so many layers and levels to our relationship with our fuel, the fuel that our body needs, that I just love. And I can't wait for all of the exciting things that we're gonna get to, to do together and, and looking at from the inside out, but also mind, body spirit,

for sure.

And looking at how people can actually, you know, change all of. But, you know, I think, you know, our topic today is, is super important when it comes to just even that, right. Like our bodies and what they need and the fuel, but, you know, and that's personal validation and, and it's something that, you know, people don't think of doing, or think they're doing it correctly, or, you know, You know, just no, you know, it's not at all my style.

I'm not gonna, you know, shoot my own horn for doing anyway. Everybody's got their reasons for not doing personal validation. However, what happens is we go on these life improvement journeys, right. I don't know whoever you are, whatever it is, whether it's my program, a self-help book or, um, a whatever, right?

Like some sort of a personal. Life improvement journey, a dietary practice, a fitness routine or whatever it is. We, we just, we go through the motions. We do the reading, we listen to whatever it is. We gain the information and we do it. We get the results and then we just go on with life. And what happens is if we don't validate.

Bring bring light to acknowledge ourselves for what's going well and why, why it's working or why it feels good or why it's right. Or whatever it is. If we don't give ourselves the acknowledgement, we're not conditioning it as a new way of being. And, and so we have to, we have to validate ourselves and, and that requires gaining some clarity, but.

But, you know, if we have needs wants, dreams, desires, aspirations, whatever, we have to validate those also, you know, like why, you know, it's okay, but why do we need them? What do we hope to gain from them? Where do we hope for it to take us? And, and, and, and then along that road, continue to validate ourself.

Yeah. You know, like be your own best cheerleader. Anyway, I know that you can identify. So if I was to ask you. To, and I know you're fine with being open and vulnerable and transparency, authentic and genuinely

.....

I will say it was a big missing piece for me, working hard, helping people. Was something just, it was, it was in me since I was a little girl. I, I, I had this voice in me that I, I was going to help people and, and really just have a message for people. But what happened along the way I, I was showing up I was creating programs, but what was happened along the way is I felt empty.

I felt unvalued. I felt low self-esteem. I felt kind of invisible, but A., a lot that came from my childhood into, you know, my adulthood and B I wasn't recognizing myself. So all of those things that I was conditioned when I was younger were showing up, once again, it didn't matter how many people I was helping or what education I had.

I would always come down on myself and I didn't feel valued. I didn't feel worthy. I didn't feel like I was an expert at what I was doing because I wasn't recognizing myself. And I remember being on the call with one of my, my earliest coaches and I was having like a down day and he said to me, Jessica, why are you so down?

You, you always have so much energy what's going on with you today. How can I help you today? And I said, I, I just don't feel motivated today. You know, I'm usually go, go, go, go, go. And today, like, I just feel like I just want to like lay in bed. I just want to like, just think.. And, and I don't know what's wrong with me.

I kept saying like, I don't know what's wrong with me. And he said, why do you think something is wrong with you? I said, because I don't have my energy. I don't have my, my tasks. I'm not accomplishing that. I'm not in the go, go go. And he listened to me for a while. And he said, I have one thing for you to to think about.

And that is an eagle, an eagle flies and sore. And they're so beautiful in everything they do. If an eagle doesn't perch, stop and perch and think about their next move, they're gonna fall outta the sky. So maybe you are that eagle that's perching right now. Instead of you coming down on yourself for feeling lazy or feeling like you're not accomplishing your task list, maybe it is your voice saying.

I've accomplished all of this, recognize it. Stop and smell the flowers, Jessica, and see it. How far you've come, appreciate yourself in everything you've done to this day and, and soak that in. And what is your next move? It's okay to take time and perch. And that day forward. I, I have goosebumps right now.

I know, right?

It, it, it gave me a whole new perspective. I'm like, oh my gosh, I don't ever stop and smell the flowers. Ever sit in the, now in the power of the now. And it really opened my eyes to start doing that. When I felt like my, when I felt like that feeling coming on again, I, I should slow down or like, I didn't feel like doing anything.

It was just, there's two sides to every coin. Maybe it's not that I didn't feel like doing anything. I'm not meant to do anything right now, but think, and appreciate and enjoy this moment. And that was a huge pivotal point for me Tricia because it, it did, it changed. It changed everything for me. I, I think it's, it looks like from your reaction that you had something very similar

well, I, I have something very similar in my journey, a hundred percent.

.....

In this special episode of Mastering the Drop, Tricia sits down with Nathan Smiddy as he shares his story of recovery and how it led him into his work. Nate spends time in communities to educate others and distribute Narcan (Naloxone). This is an episode you won't want to miss! Tune in!

Hello, everybody. Thank you so much for coming back and being here to, to witness, to listen, to, to absorb, to embrace, to just be present with us here for another episode of mastering the drop, a real view of recovery, you know, that these episodes are super special to me. I love. To hear other people's stories.

I love to learn from them, grow from them and, and gain whatever I can from how other people are actively participating in a recovery lifestyle. Um, so, you know, today's no different I am, and I'm super blessed to have my new friend Nate here with me who is super passionate about harm reduction and being an activist inside of his own community.

But I'm gonna let him tell you about that, Nate. Welcome.

Hi, thank you. Thank you for having me.

Absolutely. Absolutely. You know, I think probably best is to maybe tell, tell everybody a little bit about you and your story and your journey so that it maybe makes a little bit more sense of how you transitioned into your passion.

Yeah. Um, so I started using substances around. I was a junior in high school. And, um, for the most part, you know, there, there was never any real, like, real sign of any, of any issue, you know? If you, if someone was looking from the outside in, it was just a teenager just doing what teenagers do and, experimenting and partying and drinking beer and you know, nothing out of the ordinary that the vast majority of us do.

Right. And, and even before that, uh, just a backtrack, a little. Probably the first time that I ever endeavored in something like that, like to take the pain away or to, you know, um, I self harmed when I was, when I was younger. Um, so I did do that. So that, that, that was honestly more of a, a red flag than the, the drinking, honestly.

Um, And then I would say when I was a teenager before the drinking, like, um, I would, I would play a lot of video, like a lot of video games, you know what I mean? Just like it was, it was, it was like escapism, you know what I mean? It was escapism in a sense. And, uh, and, but, so I started drinking when I was 15 or 15, 16 junior year and then senior year or so.

Um, I started smoking marijuana. Okay. And the thing about me smoking marijuana was that I hated smoking marijuana, but when I wasn't smoking marijuana, I was thinking about the next time I could smoke marijuana because in my head I was like, well, this time it would be different. And, um, I was like, I won't get this paranoid or this or that.

Marijuana makes me extremely paranoid. There's very few strains that...

Yeah, me too!

Yeah, it, yeah. It's oh, I think people are watching me. The cops are out there. It just, it just makes me so paranoid and, but I would still smoke it, you know, I'd be like, I would smoke it and be like, well, this is kind of horrible, but whatever.

And, and then the next day I'd be like, well, I know I'm gonna get paranoid, but I'm still gonna smoke it. And it's, uh, and that's something to look at there. You know, I didn't even enjoy it, but it like changed how I felt, you know, and I kept doing it. And. And so towards the end of senior year, I started selling drugs.

I learned the hustle, the game, whatever you wanna call it, I seen how profitable it was. And, um, I got accepted into East Tennessee State University. Um, and I was gonna go with my friend and, but I realized that I was probably going to flunk outta school and just party. So I decided not to go and I stayed home.

I. Got a job at a gas station and I sold drugs full time and worked that job at the gas station. And, um, and previously to that, my, my, um, relationship with, with, with drugs was, um, in school or even, even after even, you know, like before, like, uh, even during like the summer. After I graduated high school, I was drinking every day and smoking marijuana every day.

But once I really got involved in selling drugs, like the, the, my drug use and, and stuff, it kind of went down because I was so focused on making money and it was very profitable, you know, it's a very, very profitable endeavor. And, um, I real, I would smoke like a half a joint at night and that was it. And, um, a few months went.

And, um, I tried, uh, oxycodone for the first time and my, I can remember being there and almost my first thought after I snorted the oxycodone was, um, I need to feel like this every day for the rest of my life. That was my immediate thought. And I'm pretty there's, there's not a lot of, there's not a lot of, of.

Studies behind it, but there has been a case study or maybe a peer reviewed study, but there's a study that says, like, that can happen with substance use. Like you can become, I can't think of like the term for it, but there's a, there's a term where you can like, become instantly addicted. So to speak, like in like it flips the switch, you know?

And, uh, that's what happened. Like I used opioids every day after that my drug use, uh, just snowballed. I was. Oxys and Xanax and cocaine, some meth use in there, um, was just running a muck. Um, and I overdosed the first time when I was 19. And then, um, a few years later I overdosed and, and then after, I mean, and so it was like in and out of treatment.

Um, a few times. And, um, but finally, what, what led me to get clean, um, was I had re I had relapsed and I was using marijuana again. and, um, I thought I could microdose marijuana, CBD. And it was like such a minute dose of marijuana. I was like, I'm gonna be good. Like there's no way. I just lost it. Uh, I was having like four anxiety attacks a day, five anxiety attacks a day.

Wow. I like, I never went to the doctor, but I'm pretty sure I was developing a agoraphobia because it took everything I had to leave the house. Like, and then when I left the house, I was so paranoid, so scared, like looking over my shoulder and just like, oh, just like everything bad is gonna happen. Like every bad thought you could think of.

I was thinking it. And, uh, and so I wanted to kill myself. My plan was to run out in front of the Amtrak in Carlsbad village, if anybody's ever been to Carlsbad village, you know, that the Amtrak absolutely flies through there. And so it would just be like an immediate, immediate death. And, um, and so, but I didn't, my friend asked me one night that I was living with, are you okay?

And I told him what happened and went through this process. And then I, you know, and I got clean and sober and I stayed clean and sober ever since.

That's awesome. So it, I always love to hear those stories and, and, and I hope anybody that's listening, don't get me wrong because I've worked in every level of addiction treatment and I see value validity and worth in every level of addiction treatment.

.....

"Why is there no Naloxone in this sober living? You know what I mean? That's what motivated me because I didn't want anybody to ever have my experience or my family's experience. Because there is no need for them to have to have it with the information that's out there and the availability of, of Naloxone." - Nate Smiddy

In this episode of Mastering the Drop, Tricia sits down with guest Jim Rachels, from Addicts Anonymous, as they discuss the importance of finding your WHY!

Hey everybody. Welcome back to Mastering the Drop A Real View of Recovery. This week. I have a very special friend here with me. I've actually been on his show. Um, and, and, and we've done, you know, we've collaborated on some work together. Again, something very near and dear and special to me.

But anyway, this is Jim he's with Addicts Anonymous and they have so many amazing things on their website. So many things that they are doing that are, uh, Just, I don't know, just totally rad. I have to be honest. It's just totally rad. You guys really wanna check it out. Of course, as always in the comments or in the description below, you're gonna see exactly how you could connect with Jim, but you're also gonna have access to his website, but Jim, just take, I don't know, just take a couple minutes to say hello to all of the listeners before we jump into our topic.

I think that'd be great. Maybe just introduce yourself.

Hello. I am Jim with addicts anonymous. I hope everyone's doing well today. Thank you for having me. First of all, I really do appreciate, and the kind words you just said. Um, but yeah, I guess just a little bit about the group. Is that what you're looking for?

Yeah. Yeah. Tell us about the group.

Yeah. So about the group we started last year, actually July 25th will be our one year anniversary. Um, we do a number of things. I want to be a resource for people that are in diction and they're in recovery, whatever, whatever stage they're at. So we do have our own set of 10 steps.

And what differs us from the other programs is we kind of more focus on your inner strength and your inner courage and tapping into that reservoir of strength that I believe all of us have. And. You can use my steps with either a religious approach in mind or a non-religious approach, cuz it doesn't mention the words God or higher power.

That's up to you to incorporate that. If you'd like or you just go straight for what we have written and you don't use a God aspect. So I, I wrote the steps for both in mind, religious and non-religious people. And I found that's the best middle way that I was able to come up with. We also do other things like a virtual sponsorship program.

So, if anybody's ever looking for a sponsor, you know, like Tricia said, she'll put up my information in the comments, you can reach out to me and I can place you with a number of sponsors, whether you're a man or a woman, we have different sponsors available. Um, and we also do our podcast, as Tricia mentioned.

And each week I like to give addicts a voice. I interview an addict about their life story of addiction & recovery. And we, once again, just give them a platform to tell their story. It's kind of like a speaker meeting. Me asking some questions along the way, and it's a pretty good, um, platform, but that's some of the stuff we're doing.

And another thing I could say is if you go onto our website, there is a lot of literature available. That's another thing we're doing. We do have a lot of free literature. Um, so you could check that out. There's also plenty of resources on the page and we do have a book coming out that should be in the beginning of September 'Addicts Anonymous', the book where, uh, I write about a number of different sections as far.

Different topics. And then second half of the book is people's stories. So it's gonna be a pretty cool book, I think.

......

"I want to get better and be okay. And in order to be okay, I have to treat myself the way I wanna be treated the way I would even treat others. You know, it's just, I guess one of the big things also is giving myself respect." ~ Jim Rachels

In this episode of Mastering the Drop, Tricia sits down with guest Beth Hinderaker as they discuss the importance of Active Listening when it comes to our own body and mind!

Hello. Hello everybody. Welcome back to mastering the drop a real view of recovery this week. I am so excited. We are having a, an amazing conversation today about active listening and taking inquiry to all new Heights. But before I introduce you to our, our amazing guest and the unique things she is bringing to the table, I want to.

Prompt you to, to look back to live free and transform and, and think about. All of those times, we talked about active listening. What it really is, the power of inquiry and how we utilize it and how the art of pause really fosters that so that we can be responding versus reacting and all of that amazing work we have done on becoming truly assertive people.

Now, again, remember assertiveness is open, honest, genuine, authentic, and transparent communication. And I thought that that would be extremely important for us to have in our head space because a lot of us are working on, um, our passive aggressive impulse, knee jerk, reactivity. As, as a life improvement journey.

And, and so the conversation we're about to have and listen into is, is truly transformational. It, it is truly transformative because my special guest, Ms. Beth Hinderaker.

Beth has been hugely involved in health and wellness at the immunity level and, and works on reverse aging our cells. She's been doing this for like 30 years. It's it's just. It's just mind blowing. I've been so impressed with getting to know her that I was like, oh, you gotta come on and share. Um, so you know, I'm gonna let Beth introduce herself, tell you a little bit more about herself before we dive into our conversation

Beth, please, please introduce yourself.

Oh, thank you so much for having me as a guest. I'm just honored to have met you. I feel like I met a sister from another mother when we met. We have so much in common and such a passion for helping people live transformatively to their highest potential. And I really am passionate about.

Being available service to others in your community, your family, wherever you serve, you need to have optimal health to do so, because if you are just surviving, you are not thriving. And so my journey comes out of a journey of, you know, chronic state of disease for most of my life, and then coming into optimal health later in life.

And I see that everywhere. I look, I see that. And so I'm just really passionate about helping people. It's called cenegenics reverse aging, your cells. And so. The heart of that is really good blood circulation. It's just that simple. And so that's what I specialize in helping people achieve. And once you've achieved that, you'd be surprised how the rest of the body comes into alignment with all of your systems working appropriately so that everything's open and clear and taking your food and nutrition in and getting rid of the waste.

And your brain fog is gone. Your thought process is optimal and you can just function at a much higher level when you're thriving.

Oh, yes. And I, I can, you know, totally attest to that. Um, a lot of people, you know, may know my journey, but I've been on a journey of removing prescription medications from my life.

Um, and it's been about a. Not quite a year, completely free from them, but being in a space of, wow, do I feel amazing? now of course, totally different than, than, you know, what you're talking about, but it is still in that. I gotta listen to my body. I need to be actively listening to what my vessel has to say.

Right. Because if we. A bunch of garbage in, we certainly can't expect for it to function at, I don't know, race, car capacity. And, you know, and I always talk about, you know, the fuel that we put in because that's my forte, right. Our dietary practice and our relationship with food and exercise or movement.

Um, and so if we're putting, you know, latex paint in the gas tank, You know, it's just not gonna work out real well. And, and, and so, but, you know, I I've been, you know, poking around and learning things also along the way. And one of the things that was, uh, introduced to me some months back that I hadn't really tried or given much thought to was this dry brushing to me, it sounded miserable.

Um, but I did try that while I was on my trip recently. Um, and, and I found it to be. I don't know. I liked it. I don't know yet if, you know, if it like did anything for me, but you know, there there's,

If you stay consistent over time, you'll be addicted to it.

Right. Well, because, and I'm thinking that this maybe ties into something that is, you know, one of those key things we were talking about, which is the importance of optimal blood flow.

At the smallest level.

Well, you know, when I first was learning about it, I was shocked that I hadn't learned it before, because I've been deeply involved with health and wellness for as many years as I have that we have 65,000 miles of blood vessels in our body from the tiniest to the largest.

So when we think of the largest, we think of, if you have a blockage in an artery, they cut it. Fix it, sew it back shut,, right? We can see those. We can work on those, but 99% of our blood has to flow through the tiniest vessels in order to feed our organs. And those vessels are so tiny. You can put 200 of them inside one human hair.

So I know pretty darn smaller. They're called size four micron. And to put that in perspective, our red blood cells are size seven micron. Almost double the size of that smallest special. So they have to squish down to fit through. And it's not just a matter of squishing down and fitting in. They have to move along the pathway to reach the end point, which is your organs, all of those little tiny vessels wrap around and support and feed all of your organs.

.....

"It's almost like you take a big sigh of relief, because now you're freed to actually make those good choices in all of the areas congruently." ~ Beth Hinderaker

About Beth:

Beth has been deeply involved in health and wellness at the immune level and reverse aging your cells for 30 years. Our bodies were designed to heal themselves given the right tools paired with making the right decisions. She is passionate about serving both Practitioners and Clients personally, helping them implement restoring, regenerating, repairing, and protecting your vascular network within their practice and their homes.

In Today’s episode, Tricia gives you a real view of Recovery!

Well, hello, welcome back to Mastering the Drop! A Real View of Recovery this week is definitely a unique week. I don't generally pop in here by myself. I usually have an amazing guest or an esteemed story to share with you. But this week I felt it very important. I felt very drawn. To, to share a lot of things that, well, let's be honest.

Y'all don't know and see what goes on behind the scenes. And what's really happening on all the different layers that are, that are going on here at Turning Leaves. So I thought I would just take a moment and, and share. A lot of the things that fill my soul that I do outside of sharing, uh, recovery, life skills, um, psychological skill sets and tactics and, and all of that.

Right. And, and on top of that, the work that I do with folks, one on one and individually in their lives. um, There's there's a different layer to this and there's a, you know, a whole different area to Turning Leaves that a lot of folks are unaware of. And, and that is a space for aspiring coaches.

It's a space for people that are. Very drawn or feel being that, that being called to the life and recovery coaches' realm. Can actually engage, um, with me as an instructor, as a trainer, as a mentor, as a supervisor, can engage with me and actually work towards creating their own practice, their own business going forward so that they also can fulfill what they feel is their life purpose.

So, yes. Um, you may. You may see here periodically me introduce a new coach. You may see or hear them here in this space on Mastering the Drop! A Real View of Recovery. You may, um, have actually had a conversation with me and I may have said, oh my gosh, you know, I would love to work with you, but I feel like this coach is gonna be a better fit for, for what your, what your needs and desires are.

So there's a lot of different things we have, um, International teen motivation specialists. We have, um, uh, coaches that specialize in harm reduction. We have coaches that specialize in, in anxiety that anxiety that comes with with different levels of, of addiction and, and attachments. Um, so, you know, There's already a very strong crew, if you will, um, of coaches here at Turning Leaves, but here's the really exciting part is it doesn't just stop there and it, and there's a very formal way of doing this.

Meet Your Host!

In this special episode of Mastering the Drop, Tricia sits down with Katherine Polychron as she shares her journey into recovery. This is an episode you won't want to miss as she dives deep into this conversation, sharing how she came out on the other side with now 8 years sober!

Hello. Hello everybody. Welcome to you. Mastering the drop a real view of recovery. I am really excited about this week, because this is something, this is something brand new that that we're doing. Um, and in that. It's really the same, because we're going to be sharing our, you know, sharing a journey, but, but we're actually going to allow my wonderful guest to really just share her story and, and talk about what it looked like and felt like for her moving through versus talking about, you know, the.

You know, all the action packed stuff that we're generally focused on, but you know, in that there'll still be pieces of that, but this is just awesome because I'm, you know, it's just very seldom that somebody comes on and is gonna, you know, openly share about their recovery journey. And, and so I'm just really excited for you all to, to meet my new friend.

Um, and, and so I'm just gonna go right with it and, and introduce you. Um, this is Katherine Polychron. And I'm going to let her start by, by sharing, you know, where she is today. But then we're gonna go back to the beginning.

Thank you, Tricia. I'm very honored to be here. Um, nervous as well. Um, I think I've shared with you.

Um, I've kind of lived behind a world of, um, anonymity for a while. So, um, having started, uh, coaching and sharing my story and my Instagram page, um, it was time to open up, so I'm really honored to be here. Um, currently

I'm grateful. Thank you.

Well me as well. Thank you. Um, I will be nine years sober, um, eight years sober , um, in August.

And, um, I'm about a year under that, um, uh, in eating disorders. So eight years in alcohol, um, and I am happier and healthier than I have ever been. And , you know, you can play a role of not feeling very confident in those shoes for many years. Even though your history shows that you are, walking a line of recovery, but taking it a step further to help other people . I needed to get to that point, to be able to share my story along with some other life, life things. But, I finally hit that stage, where I am very comfortable and confident in my recovery. And, uh, you know, know it's work every day, but, I'm to a point now where. While I'm nervous to share it's it's time, because I do know that in my early recovery hearing stories like mine, and hearing other people share their, their struggles, to then fast forward to where they were, Thriving.

It really helped me see that there was hope. And so that's sort of, you know, what my, my motive is and, and hope for.

I love that. And, you know, as, as many of us find in our journeys, you know, our, our stories are very similar. My listeners are no strangers to, you know, my, my traumas that started at the age of four and, and how I, you know, moved into.

This relationship with alcohol at 12, but truly developed, you know, eating disorders as well. And, and then disordered eatings and food addiction. And, you know, my, my longest term recovery is from eating disorders and I'm at Ooh. 26 years.

.....

"You know, you're sinking in the abyss and you just don't know how to get out. And if you do get out of it, It's a turning point. It's like somebody placed a yield sign in your life to help you switch gears and move forward." Katherine Polychron

In Today’s episode we welcome guest Clare Healy. Listen in as Tricia and Clare discuss Communication and your Stance.

Hello. Hello everybody. Welcome back to Mastering the Drop A Real View of Recovery. My name is Tricia Parido and today we have a very special guest, her name is Claire. She's near and dear to me, she is new to Turning Leaves, but not new to the industry and definitely not new to helping people.

Clare has a master's in applied psychology in coaching and in positive psychology. Her specific focus is super amazing because it's one that isn't necessarily thought of, and I love that she brings this piece to the practice. Because it's all about helping people who suffer and struggle with anxiety and who are really determined to find life recovery in that. Especially when they're sprinkling in chemical substances such as alcohol, marijuana, etc; to help alleviate that. And I just think it is such a special space that she fills.

Hi Clare!

Hello everyone. Hello Tricia. I'm Clare.

Thank you for being here. Tell me first, a little bit about this passion you have with, um, with people that are battling with anxiety. I, I mean, I'm one. I had generalized anxiety disorder with panic for a really long time. And it was, it was probably one of my longest journeys of life recovery. Tell me a little bit about this, this passion that you have for, for helping people.

Well, I have struggled with anxiety my entire life, but didn't really realize I was. So since I was young, just, I thought it was a normal way. How everyone behave. Everyone thought everyone dealt with this and it wasn't until.

Later in my master's degree when I was going through and having my own sessions and going to therapy and really diving into my own life that I realized that not everyone thinks like me and what I'm going through is actually anxiety. And I started looking into it and working on it and realizing that I was self-medicating with alcohol and with marijuana, because it would help calm my brain down and help me.

Think like one or two thoughts at a time, instead of completely going mental with maybe 15 thoughts at the same time, I can think so like of so many different things like me having a conversation with someone while thinking about this or that, or some other thing as well, and it just kind of starts gearing up and spiraling and realizing how I've been coping with it and thinking that it's just a normal way of life.

And, um, going through therapy and then also when the pandemic hit and when my anxiety skyrocketed to an almost unbearable level where I couldn't function and I couldn't make decisions, couldn't do anything would just shut down and just stay in my room or anything like that. So I'm realizing how many people actually deal with this as well.

Maybe don't realize they're dealing with it or know they are. But are coping with it in ways that aren't healthy and I've been there. I've been doing that and I'm pulling myself out of that and getting my own journey started and I've come a long way. And I'm very impressed with myself and how far I have come, but I'm not the only one.

And I wanna help other people to live to their fullest potential and not be held back by anxiety and the different substances that. Caused you to be held back.

Hello. Hello everybody. Welcome back to mastering the drop, a real view of recovery, where myself, my guests and the other coaches at TLR come here to talk about real conversations and topics on how we recover from just about anything and everything that life throws in our direction. Such a divine intervention when today was the day that today's topic was her topic for her to come in and chat with us. Because right now we're transitioning, we're transitioning into a concrete foundation.

That's going to allow us to effectively invite people, our, and, and, and our environment around us. Follow our lead in how we want to experience living. Because we get to choose. Anyway.
