Transform Your Weekends with CBT: Unlocking the Power of Habits

Welcome to today’s daily podcast where we'll dive into the world of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT, and explore how it can help us create calmer weekends by changing our habits.

Weekends are a precious time for relaxation, rejuvenation, and doing things that bring us joy.

However, sometimes we find ourselves falling into unproductive or unhealthy habits, leaving us feeling unfulfilled. But fear not, because CBT can provide us with the tools to transform our weekends for the better!

CBT teaches us that our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours are all interconnected.

By changing one aspect, we can create a ripple effect that positively impacts the others. So, let's explore how we can apply CBT principles to our weekends and create lasting, positive changes.

Step 1: Identifying Unhelpful Weekend Habits

First, let's take a moment to identify any unhelpful habits that may be holding us back from fully enjoying our weekends. It could be over drinking, overindulging in unhealthy foods, or even procrastinating on tasks that could bring us closer to our goals. What are some habits you'd like to change?

By recognising these unhelpful habits, we take the first step toward positive change. Now, let's move on to the next step."

Step 2: Challenging Negative Thoughts

Negative thoughts often contribute to our unhelpful habits. They can hold us back, making us believe change is impossible. But with CBT, we can challenge and reframe these negative thoughts to create new possibilities.

Remember, we have the power to replace negative thoughts with more positive and empowering ones. This shift in mindset can help us build healthier habits during our weekends.

Step 3: Taking Action and Building New Weekend Habits

Now comes the exciting part—taking action and building new, positive habits! Start by setting achievable goals for your weekends. Break them down into smaller, manageable steps that align with your values and desires.

Remember, change takes time and effort, but it's worth it. Be patient with yourself and embrace the journey. Each small step you take brings you closer to a weekend filled with joy, fulfillment, and personal growth.

If you would like to speak to me about how to start change using CBT here is the link to talk to me https://calendly.com/deirdrecoyne/letstalk

Progressive Muscle Relaxation is a two-step process. It begins with tensing particular muscle groups and ends with releasing the tension and noticing how your muscles feel when you relax them.

It is used to help lower overall tension, stress levels, and anxiety.

Here’s how you do it.

Start with a muscle group, maybe your feet or hands.

Take a slow, deep breath and squeeze the muscles as hard as you can for about 5 seconds. You may shake a little.

Then exhale as you release the tension.

IMPORTANT! Be sure to focus on and notice the difference between the tension and relaxation.

Then move onto the next muscle group. If starting at your feet, move up to your legs and tense each muscle group, then release. Continue moving up your body to the top of your head.

I hope this is helpful and relaxing, if you would like to talk to me further about your health goals I am offering a 30 minutes wellness audit, here is the link to book in one of the three spots available this week.Ā

3 Steps to Reframing Anxiety

What does Reframing mean?

When I talk of reframing I looked at the definition which is ā€˜redefining a problem as a challenge’.

When it comes to reframing our anxiety here are three steps which I hope are helpful.

  1. Seeing Anxiety as not all bad. Perhaps a different way to look at anxiety could be as an emotion that we need and can help us.

We need anxiety to protect us from danger, it helps us to work out what is important to us and it gives us the motivation to action on what is important.

  1. You are not your anxiety, I often hear clients say ā€˜I am anxious all the time’ or ā€˜I have always been anxious’, if we reframe this to ā€˜I am experiencing anxiety’ it may help us to look at the message this emotion is presenting to us and also that it is an experience like another emotion such as excitement or happiness.

  2. We know that reframing our brains to think differently is possible at any age, scientists previously thought that once childhood was over we would think the same way for the rest of our days but thanks to image technology of the brain we can see new pathways are formed in any generation. For example images were taken of taxi drivers beginning ā€˜the knowledge’ and another image when completed showing new pathways in the brain.

In summary, when we look to manage anxiety we can exercise thinking differently to help us.

If anxiety or thoughts of I’m not perfect or at the right stage are stopping you from either helping you making a change or helping someone else why not harness that into action,

Thank you for your support to me on these daily resources and videos it really helps me to know there is value and that it helps.

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Today we are talking about how we might create our own luckĀ  and I am sharing 12 ways to create your own luck.

But is Luck something that just happens or is there another way to think about it?

Usually there's a lot of hard work, preparation and thinking that meant we were in the right place at the right time and in the right frame of mind to grab that lucky opportunity —and act. Or as Shonda Rhimes says:

'I am not lucky. You know what I am? I am smart, I am talented, I take advantage of the opportunities that come my way and I work really, really hard. '

We all have areas of negativity in our lives.

Maybe it's a job causing us stress, a neighbour that causes friction, or an over-packed schedule.

Whatever the case may be, these areas of negativity can have a profound impact on our mental and emotional health. That's why it's essential to identify these areas and devise a plan to remedy them into something more positive.

One way to do this is to acknowledge the
areas of negativity in your life. This seems like a simple step, but it's
imperative.

Acknowledging that something is negative doesn't mean you're powerless to change it. It simply means that you're aware of the problem and are willing to work on finding a solution.

Once you've acknowledged the negativity
in your life, it's time to start devising a plan to improve things. This will
require some introspection and self-reflection. But ultimately, it's up to you
to decide what steps to take to turn these negative areas into positive ones.

By taking the time to identify the
negative areas in our lives and coming up with a plan to fix them, we can make
significant strides in achieving our goals and a happier, healthier life.

Today in Daily Cognitive Behavioural Coaching and Therapy skills we are looking at Cognitive and Behavioural Tips to Sleep Better

What would you do if other people's opinions didn't hold you back, asking ourselves who's opinion really matters to us and who might be our largest critic.

If anxiety or thoughts of I’m not perfect or at the right stage are stopping you from either helping you making a change or helping someone else why not harness that into action,

Thank you for your support to me on these daily resources and videos it really helps me to know there is value and that it helps.

If you would like to speak to me about how changing thoughts and behaviours can help you to feel and look better why not book a call. Here is the link

Sleep is critical for our overall health and well-being, yet many of us struggle to get a good night's rest. If you're looking for ways to sleep better, a few tools can help.

A White Noise Machine: White noise is a type of background noise that is uniform in pitch and volume. This makes it less likely to disrupt sleep than other types of noise. In addition, the machine can help to mask disruptive noises so that you can stay asleep through the night.

A Weighted Blanket: The weight of the blanket provides gentle pressure that has a soothing effect, much like a massage. Weighted blankets are often used to help people with anxiety, insomnia, or those that suffer from other sleep disturbances. The deep pressure stimulation provided by the blanket can help lower cortisol levels, the stress hormone.

An Eye Mask: Whether it's the street lamp outside your bedroom window or the sun peeking through the blinds, external light can make it difficult to sleep soundly. An eye mask can help to block out this light and create a dark, peaceful environment that is conducive to sleep.

Using one or more of these tools, you can create an environment conducive to sleep and start getting the rest you need.

Despite our best intentions, healthy eating can often feel like more of a chore than a pleasure.

Especially at this time of year, it can be hard to find the time to prepare nutrient-rich meals from scratch. However, you can take a few simple shortcuts to get to that healthy lifestyle without taking up more time that you don't have. Here's how to sneak in more healthy living via simple shortcuts to get you on track faster.

Cook simple foods
in a small batch

The problem with meal preparation
recipes is that while you and your family may love that meal the first night,
it wears out its welcome on your table the rest of the week. Instead of making
a giant portion that will wind up going to waste, cook foods in a simple way.
Whatever you prepare, keep it simple so you can repurpose it in different ways
throughout the week. Do this with vegetables and grains, and you'll save on
preparing dinner during the week while still eating healthy.

Keep your cupboard and freezer ready

You can make anything when you have a
stash of reliable ingredients handy. Canned beans, lentils, frozen meats, rice,
canned tuna, and all sorts of kitchen staples.
Don't forget your seasonings -- herbs add tons of flavour and nutrition to keep
everything from being bland.

Throw in more
vegetables

Soups and salads are a great way to
boost vegetable intake. When you make either one, throw in more vegetables than
called for to boost nutrition. If you're using your oven to roast chicken,
throw in a tray of broccoli, brussels sprouts, or cauliflower to go along with
it. Any chance you have to put more vegetables on the table.

Take your own food When you're on the go, it helps to bring your own healthy foods with you. Sometimes, it may be the only way to get a solid meal, like while on a plane. But in other cases, like a long drive it can save you from eating fried drive-thru fare. Make your own sandwiches, pack some nuts, and bring fruit.

Know that it's OK to buy ready-made foods

Sometimes, you need to do what's best
for your sanity. If you are exhausted from your day, the best thing you can do
is pick up a ready-made meal. Grab a rotisserie chicken from the deli or supermarket. Get some hummus and cut-up veggies. Even ready-made wraps filled with veggies, fresh broth-based soups, and other meals are a huge helper on busy days, and they are far healthier than the alternative.

By following these simple little shortcuts, you can stick to healthy living even when time is tight.

Minding yourself – The Four Pillars

At this time of year it is likely that we all like to indulge but it can be worth checking in with the pillars of both emotional and physical health remembering toĀ

Eat Well – For at least some of the time eating the food that gives us the right mix of nutrients – protein, carbohydrates and fats for example.Ā

Move Well – Taking time to walk in nature or whichever exercise you like to do, it doesn’t have to be any in particular but a little each day can help.Ā

Think Well – Using some of the techniques above or maybe journalling, mindfulness or breathing techniques keeps our emotional health in check.

Do Well – Having a balance of activities that include work, rest and play supports both our physical and emotional health.

We all have areas of negativity in our lives. Stresses that can feel like there is little we can change.

These areas of negativity or stresses can have a profound effect on our overall well-being. They can drag us down and cause us to lose sight of our goals.

Is it possible to turn these areas of around? There is a reality to what challenges we are facing. There are some circumstances that maybe we can’t control. One of the questions maybe to ask ourselves is what can I control and what is outside of our control

But, maybe we can support our mental health and wellbeing by influencing that which we can.

The first step is to identify the source of the problem. Once you know what is causing the negative feelings, you can start to take steps to change the situation.

This might mean finding new ways to cope with stress. It might mean investing in our energy to cope by investing in our health. Are there any support mechanisms we could use in our network or community, a cup of tea with a friend, talking to a partner or maybe a colleague, line manager or family member. Talking to a therapist, coach or counsellor.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Techniques help us to check whether there is another way to think or take action that supports our stressful challenges.

We all have areas of negativity or stresses in our lives but as the great Epictetus said ā€˜It is not what happens to you but how you react to it that matters’.

At stressful times, we tend to be driven by our emotions and opinions, whichĀ  can then create a vicious cycle by fuelling each other.

Our emotions strengthen our opinions, which in turn, intensify our emotions.Ā

Asking ourselves is what I'm thinking a fact or my opinion can be helpful,Ā  realising that many thoughts are opinion rather than fact makes it less likely that we’ll be distressed by them, and more able to make wise and calm decisions about the best action to take.

Hope that is helpful Deirdre

In todays Daily CBT we look at the different types of thinking.

There are three kinds of automatic thoughts:Ā

Neutral thoughts – What shall I have for my dinner

Positive thoughts - I can do this

Negative thoughts – I can’t do thisĀ

Automatic negative thoughts (ANTs) are the ones that disturb us.

We can use the 4 cs technique to Catch, Check, Challenge and Change these.

The Four Steps of STOP

S – STOP

When you notice negative thoughts or anxiety creeping in, or you find yourself ruminating, stop what you’re doing. Imagine a red and white stop sign. Then …

T – Take a breath

Now, take a deep breath and (if you can) a physical step back. Taking a deep breath fills our lungs under our ribcage which in itself can reset the fight or flight response.Ā

O – Options

Once you have taken some deep breaths to gather yourself, it’s time to observe what your options are. There are a few things you’ll want to pay attention to here:

  • Your thoughts – What’s going through your mind right now? What are you telling yourself?
  • Your feelings – What emotions are you experiencing?
  • Your body – What physical sensations are you feeling? Where are these physical sensations?
  • Your behaviour – What are you reacting to? Where is your focus of attention? What are you doing right now?

Spend a little bit of time just observing these things. Don’t pass judgement on any of them, just notice that they are there.

P – PROCEED

Once you have observed your thoughts, feelings, emotions, behaviour and even physical sensations, you can then carry on – or proceed. You’ll have been more mindful of how you feel and may find that this changes what you doing going forward. Ā

In this episode we look at how we might shift our mindset, those of us with anxiety coming at us all the time have the opportunity to practice the skill of turning down our anxiety, in a way becoming more emotionally fit.Ā

We maybe familiar with the fight or flight response or the sympathetic nervous system but did you know that we have another part in our nervous system a destressing part called the parasympathetic nervous system. “The best way to activate the parasympathetic nervous system to calmness is to deep breathe.

Even in the midst of an anxiety provoking conversation or situation taking a deep breath works to activate the calmness within our nervous system

Helpful because with too much fight or flight response our prefrontal cortex shuts down and you need this because it is your decision maker to enhance your discussion skills.Ā“

Fear conditioning -Ā  example would be a previous frightening time remembered when brain trying to keep you safe.

“Joy conditioning on the other hand may not happen automatically however if we can consciously remember a joyful memory get really clear on the moment of laughter we know the more that we can strengthen the memory we can enjoy the emotions attached to it perhaps enjoying an inner smile as we remember in our day.

We can say that motivation is the driving force behind the actions and your general willingness to do something.

For example, you want some fresh air which drives you to go outside. Or you feel thirsty, which makes you reach out for a bottle of water.

Let's now say you have a goal to lose 10kg/22lbs or run half a marathon. You need more than just the desire to do this. It would help if you had something that causes you to act and start, which will keep you working even when you face obstacles.

So, this is where we need to trigger our motivation.

Join me tomorrow for our first step.
