Once- upon- a- time, in the mid 1800’s in New York City, a man named Mr. Henry Bergh was angry and heartbroken to see men abusing horses, shooting pigeons, poisoning cats and dogs. He decided the laws needed to be changed to protect animals. He became famous - though many people hated him and many admired him. Why? He created The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.But then … a woman named Etta Wheeler wrote him a letter asking for his help. She discovered a little girl who was being beaten, locked in the closet, starved by a woman who pretended to be her mother. Mr. Bergh was so angry that he took the pretend mother to court and she was found guilty of child abuse and sent to prison. The little girl - Mary Ellen Wilson was adopted by a wonderful family thanks to Mr. Bergh and Mrs. Wheeler.
