The word Bible, like the New Testamen comes from Koinē Greek, the same language used to write the New Testament Bible. The Greek, τὰ βιβλία, means "the books." The Bible is not a single book but a collection of books and the origins of these books are not totally clear. The books of the Bible were written and copied by hand, initially on papyrus scrolls. Papyrus paper comes from papyrus reeds, which are tall, skinny green plants that look like large flower stems with crazy hairstyles. Papyrus paper did not last very long so no original writings of the Bible survive, and the oldest existing scrolls are copies that were written hundreds of years after the books of the Bible were first written.

In Japanese folklore and fairy tales, an oni is a kind of demon, org, ogre or troll. They are sometimes fun little weirdos, but often terrible blood-thirsty body-butchers and cannibals. Sometimes they are huge and have big horns. They are different bright colors, sometimes red, blue, or yellow and they often wear loincloths made of tiger skins. They have magical powers. But most of the time they’ll just bop you on the head with their big fat clubs.

When Kipling began writing fiction, he wrote furiously. In 1888, when he was twenty-three years old, he published six collections of short stories, containing 41 stories. At twenty-six years old, Kipling married and went on honeymoon with his wife to America where they lived in a small cottage together and had their first baby. It was here, at this cottage, that Kipling began the novel, The Jungle Book, which nearly one-hundred years later was made into an animated movie by the Disney Company. This was the last movie Walt Disney was able to work on before he passed away in 1966.

Rudyard Kipling was born on 30 December 1865 in Bombay, India. Kipling and his sister grew up with their Indian babysitter, learning Indian songs and fairy tales. Everything changed when they were moved back to England to attend a boarding school. This boarding school was absolutely horrible. Kipling described as a place of cruelty and neglect. When he was sixteen years old, Kipling was finally able to return to India and became an assistant editor for a local newspaper. While writing for the newspaper, back in India where he’d longed to be for a decade, Kipling became inspired to begin writing his fiction.

The Just So Stories are origin stories about how animals got their claws or humps or teeth or spots. Kipling wrote these stories for his daughter Josephine and called them “Just So Stories” because he had to read them to her “just so,” that is, just as Jospehine was used to, or she would complain.
