No one ever told me living a life of faith would be easy--but they also never told me it would be this...complex either. I bet you can relate. Hi, my name is Shinia, and what I desire to create here is a safe place for us to be honest about the challenges we face as believers. A place where we can share where we've gotten it wrong, and how to get it right. A judgment-free zone for those who are tired of "playing church" and are ready to dig deep into the Word and learn God's truth for themselves. This is a place to grow. Remember: we can't reap what we don't sow. Welcome to Rooted. Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/shinia-lambert/support

It’s not the existence of God that you’re questioning. You believe in Him. It’s not the presence of your calling—you know you have a gift. What you don’t believe in—is yourself. Is it possible that you have not seen the results, progress or growth that you desire, because you believe what God has to say about Him, just not what God has to say about you?

Hey friend, I had to disrupt the Assassins series to share with you an urgent word from the Lord. If you are unsure of where you stand with God, or have been compromising your faith for comfort, out of fear, or double-mindedness, now is the time to repent and respond to God's call. We are about to enter an age of deception and delusion that is so powerful, that truth will be extremely difficult to identify. It is time to lay aside childish ways and idolatrous practices and return to our first love. I pray this message reaches those for whom it is intended. How you think about yourself, God, others, and your circumstances affects everything. This is something we can and must learn how to control--especially if our attitude leads us to procrastinate or drag our feet when it comes to executing on the things God has called us to do. One of the most common misconceptions among Christians is that if we are operating in God's will that we won't have to go to war. Nothing could be further from the truth. You are a soldier. There are three needs that every person has—it doesn’t matter what you look like, where you come from, what you’ve been through, or where you’re going—everyone needs three things: 1. Love 2. Significance and Security. And because we all share those same needs, you would think we could all acknowledge not only that they exist but also agree to show grace, empathy and compassion to one another as we try to navigate relationships and this crazy world that we live in. So many of the problems we experience are rooted in the fact that we don’t know what we need. And we often confuse what we need with what we want. Add on top of that poor communication, ineffective boundaries, and hurtful experiences, and you have the perfect stop for conflict. Tonight, we are going to talk about those three needs, how those unmet needs tend to show up when we aren’t mindful of how we are showing up, and then in part 2 we’ll talk about how we can reclaim our authority over these legitimate needs and stop trying to meet them illegitimately.

Welcome back to our Fight Club Series where we are discussing conflict resolution. The foundation of this series comes from Proverbs 18:19 where we learned that offense can lead to conflict, and unresolved conflict can lead to ruined relationships. At Rooted we are all about teaching you practical ways to live life well, and you can’t get relationships right without learning how to address offense. If your goal in your relationships, whether professional, platonic, or personal is to not fight. You’re setting yourself up for an emotional knock-out. While we don’t encourage conflict, we do understand that as flawed human beings, we’re not going to always agree—so wisdom says “let’s have a plan, a standard operating procedure if you will, on how we resolve to handle conflict”. And that’s what this series is all about. Giving you practical tools to self assess, evaluate, recalibrate, and construct boundaries that help your relationships get off the struggle bus. Relationships are work but they don’t have to be hard.
Tonight, we are going to take things one step further and talk about the roles we can play in conflict. Are we the aggressor or are we the avoider? Both contribute to creating and continuing conflict. Once we can identify the role we are playing, we will find ar more success in coming to a resolution. So stick around for this episode called: Role Play: Animal Kingdom.
It’ll make more sense as we get into, grab your notebooks, devices, bibles, pens, whatever you need to engage completely, and we’ll be right back.

Welcome back to our Fight Club series. Tonight, we are having a very raw conversation about how hard it is to advocate for yourself in a world that tells you that to love others means you have to come last. Because we were not created to deny our own needs, desires, calling, purpose, etc., when we do just that, over time the denial begins to breed division, resentment and bitterness internally and within our relationships. A huge part of conflict resolution, which is what this series is all about is being able to identify those root causes and triggers that lead to conflict and offense in the first place.
I don’t know if there is an arrow that shoots right at the heart of offense more than the denial of our needs. We’re going to talk about it tonight on Main Character Energy.

If you’ve been tuning in to our recent episodes then you know we’ve started a new series this month called Fight Club. The first two episodes titled Oh You Mad Parts 1 and 2, address three critical questions we have to ask ourselves if we are going to learn how to handle offense and conflict well. This whole series is centered around conflict resolution. It’s beyond our call to forgive, which don’t get me wrong, is important, but we’re learning how to be proactive, instead of reactive when it comes to one of our most important resources, and that’s relationships.
The third question that I posed last time, was this, when considered potential offense and patterns, have I expressed my expectations and set clear and enforceable boundaries?
In response to that, tonight I want to talk about three types of boundaries, with whom we should be setting boundaries, and what you can likely expect from others as you start to establish and implement your new boundaries.
Let’s get started on tonight’s episode: Basic Bs: where we are going to break down basics of boundary setting – and how you can finally do it with confidence and without the guilt!

Welcome back, last week we started our new series on conflict resolution called Fight Club, and our first episode was Oh You Mad Part 1.
In that episode we talked about three questions we must ask if we are going to learn how to resolve potential offenses that can lead to conflict.
All three questions are posted on my Instagram at shinia_lambert, if you are like me and are a visual person.
So the first question we ask is: 1. Is this thought/statement/accusation true or is there a reasonable alternative thought?
The second question we ask ourselves is: Is this an isolated incident or is this indicative of a pattern of behavior?
Our third question, the one we are going to cover tonight is: Have I expressed my expectations and set clear and enforceable boundaries?
If we desire to create and cultivate relationships that can handle conflict, these are questions we must ask ourselves, and when it comes to setting boundaries, there is a right and wrong way to do it—and only one of those gets us the results we’re after. Let’s talk more about it tonight on Oh You Mad? How to Handle Offense Part 2.

One thing I know for sure is that regardless of how emotionally intelligent you are, how prepared you try to be, how peaceably to try to project, you are going to face conflict. The one thing that you can resolve right now is to accept that fact—and know that conflict doesn’t have to always be a bad thing. Conflict is a warning signal for your relationships—that indicate something is going on, something needs to be addressed, and my job is help you cultivate the tools to confront conflict—but not just to confront but come to resolutions that serve you and your relationships well. This is going to take work. It will include self-awareness, social awareness, social management, and self-management in order to produce the results you want to see.
You don’t have to be afraid of the fight—not when you have the tools to win, every single time.
Let explain what I mean, starting in the series Fight Club, tonight’s episode is called, Oh You Mad?
Get your Bible, your notebook, and a pen, I’ll meet you back here in a second, and we’ll get started!

Last week we delved into the propensity of our heart to make idols out of our desires, if we failed to guard it. We discussed filters or gates that affect what enters into our hearts and ultimately what comes out. As Proverbs 27:19 says as water reflects the face so the heart reflects the person. What’s in your heart is who you are—and make no mistake what’s in our heart will come out.
Tonight, we’re going to continue this talk about boundaries and discuss how the enemy loves to use temptation to get us to overstep the boundaries God puts in place to protect us. As we lay out three common boundaries that are often overstepped, we’ll go a step further by identifying the lies we are tempted to believe, and truth needed to overcome them, and how to practically break the idols of our heart.

I want to propose to you that if you are not seeing the results that you want, or you are seeing progress but not enjoying the process, that a tool you may be missing in your arsenal is boundary setting. Boundaries allow us to draw a line in the sand and manage expectations for ourselves and others. Welcome back—so last week we talked about how all of us will experience dark nights of the soul – or trips to the lion’s den. And while allof us will spend some time in the den—we know that as people who are intentional about their relationship with God, possess a growth mindset, and operate in emotional and relational intelligence, we can be prepared for the den, and protected and preserved while we are in it. The additional factor—the difference maker in this scenario that we also have to consider, is the role that God’s favor plays in these scenarios. Tonight, we are going to talk about it on Kingdom Agenda: The Favor of God.

As believers, or people in generally who just seek to be wise and make good decisions, we often equate those efforts to a 'get out of suffering free'card. Where we think because we have been diligent, and intentional, and made good choices, that this automatically means we won’t experience pain, suffering, disappointment, or loss—all of which are a part of being alive and as a human being. Being a good steward of our time, talents and resources, honoring God in our choices, and seeking to serve people are all things we should be doing—they matter to God, to others, and to us—however with that being said, we would be deceiving ourselves if we thought that meant we’d never face hardship, or challenges, or suffering—if we thought we’d never, as Daniels find ourselves in a lion’s den. So, while being a Daniel doesn’t prevent you from having to go to the den, it can prepare you for it and preserve and protect you in it.
So tonight I want to talk about what living like a Daniel looks like.
Remember, everyone is going to go the Den, but you can be someone who makes it out.

In tonight's episode we talk about how to take faith beyond the first step. Don't get me wrong, taking that first step is hard, and often it's one we have to take alone. But we must be prepared for the place called the "messy middle" -- where we have come so far from where we began, and yet still have a way to go. Who or what do you depend on, when the distractions, circumstances, and challenges of life, start to stir? When are the winds and the waves begin thrashing and crashing -- threatening to take you out? There's only one who is undeniably and reliably dependent--and his name is Jesus. Join me tonight as we talk about faith beyond the first step.

Now if I’m honest then I have to say that I’m partial to every episode that I record. Each and every one has a special meaning to me, Ibelieve it carries an on time message that I hope encourages and challenges the listener (including myself) every single time. But there’s something about thefaith talk that, especially in this season, that is superior for me. It’s a chicken salad. From 81st deli. Superior. If you know you know.
I am consistently in awe of the way that God will break down and bust through barriers, absolutely anything that keeps us from knowing him, seeing him, and him confirming and affirming that he knows and sees us.
That’s what tonight’s episode is about. It’s about the knowing. But in how we perceive others and our circumstances, and the way God perceives, sees, and knows us.
Its aspirational, it’s inspirational, but most of all, I hope you find that it’s transformational.

In Galatians Chapter 4, Paul expresses a deep concern that not only are the Galatians being influenced by those who are intentionally seeking to enslave them, but that the believers appear more than willing to return to patterns, behaviors, and principles that were fruitless and faithless. Today, we can be tempted to reduce our relationship with Christ to rules and regulations. But Christ didn't just die to set us free from sin, but also to set us free from a mindset that forces us to try to earn favor with God. We then went on to discuss the first three of six ways we can stay rooted in our faith. They included reflecting, realigning, and rejecting.
I promised that tonight we would talk about why Paul chose to use Abraham as an example of faith, and also about the difference between miracles and our attempts to manufacture our own blessings.
If you’ve ever felt the need to HELP God or HURRY him along, this is an episode you can’t afford to miss.

Hope deferred makes the heart sick. Have you ever wanted something so bad for so long that the reality of having it seems impossible at this point? Have you ever believed God for something wholeheartedly and then could feel, as the more time passed, your confidence slipping away? Have you ever resolved that God’s truth was your standard and then found it difficult to stand on His Word? If so, you’re not alone. God making a promise and receiving the promise are totally different things—if you know you know. It’s not a question of His character—He’s good. He’s faithful. And he will do it. But the space of time between what he said and when he’ll do it—oh the places your mind will go! Tonight, we are going to talk about how to start and finish with faith. Join me on What You Trying to Do? Part 1.
Get your bibles, get your notebooks, lets go.

It’s often easy to judge those who struggle to believe God is who the Bible says that He is. But if we were honest with ourselves, even the most seasoned believer, has at time faced circumstances, that even if for just a second, made you wonder, “Ummm Jesus, are you there?” False teaching can lead us astray, and so can bad theology, but no one is talking about how life can wear down our resolve, and cause us to question if God is real—and if He is, why are these things happening? Do you remember Gideon, threshing wheat in the winepress? If not, go listen to that episode, it’s good! But Gideon said to the "If the Lord is with us, why has all this happened? And where are all his wonders that our fathers told us about?". Great question Gideon. Great question. Let’s talk about it tonight on 'Are You The One'?

In an article titled “7 Key Challenges for 21st Century Christianity” the author writes that the 4 key challenge is: Those who intentionally create conflict and discord in the Christian community need to be confronted”. That is exactly what the Apostle Paul does in the first chapter of his letter to the Galatians – Paul writes the early church to warn them against the dangers of false teaching—especially at the hands of those who came intentionally to cause disruption and division.
Todays’ church needs to be just as vigilant.
Eugene Peterson points out, “Our spiritual communities are as susceptible to disease as our physical bodies. But it is easier to detect whatever is wrong in our stomachs and lungs than in our worship and witness. As much as we need physicians for our bodies, we have even greater need for diagnosticians and healers of the spirit.
It is our spiritual responsibility that we filter the information and influence that we receive to make sure it aligns with the truth of God’s Word. False teaching is running rampant, tonight we dig into biblical history to explore the dangers of false teaching and gain wisdom on how to 1) know we belong to God, and 2) better discern what is true and what isn’t. Join me on tonight’s episode: All in the Family.

In what is thought to be his first letter, Paul writes to the church of Galatia, addressing the issue of false teaching—primarily this argument that you can obtain victory through sole human effort. This is an important lesson for us modern day hustlers—the ones who strive and grind, with the mindset that all we need to do is…well more. Work harder. Faster. And we will get better. The problem is that within this mindset lies a lot of truth. Sowing and reaping. You get out what you put in. Hard work does pay off. The problem is we aren’t just looking for human results. We want supernatural, quantum leaps, into our calling and purpose—we want transformed lives. And that will never be accomplished by being “good” enough. That is God Work. That’s what the Holy Spirit does. And every time we fall into the trap of thinking that we can do it on our own—whatever it is—we set ourselves up to not only spin our wheels in exhaustion, but fall prey to pride—and you know what happens then—a fall. But that doesn’t have to be us. As we start tonight’s study of Galatians, we are going to explore the authenticity of a real relationship with Jesus and the confidence that comes from this closeness, which equips us to reject false teaching and embrace truth! If you’re ready to go to the next level it begins with a sure foundation. So what’s your relationship status? You don’t want to miss this one.

Last week we began our new study into the New Testament. Because the Apostle is a primary contributor to the text, we thought it imperative that we take some time to understand who Paul was, and his conversion from the person we are first introduced to in the book of Acts, to the passionate preacher we come to know as Paul. This is an introduction that really is better served in Scripture. Lets just get into it in tonight’s episode: Paul: Persecutor to Apostle.

As we begin this new year, I feel an overwhelming desire—a nudging, if you will to walk through the New Testament with you. I don’t know where you might find yourself this first week of January 2023—maybe you’re inspired and motivated to accomplish some goals, maybe you’re in an in-between place where you don’t have any specific plans, but you do desire to see some growth, or maybe you’re on the verge of isolation—you feel dull and disengaged and don’t feel any sense of desire to do much but make it through another day. Hey, making it, counts. So, I hope you do. I mean that.
The Holy Spirit is definitely doing something in this season. That sounds so generic and bland and rote. But I’d be lying if I said I completely understood. There has been a clear outpouring of his spirit, I’m seeing so many people desiring to know God, and to have a real relationship with him, to release themselves from religious and spiritual trauma, who are seeking healing and as a result want to love and serve other people. I’m seeing people racing to social media platforms and eager to share their testimonies and transformations. I also feel a heaviness that sometimes feels overwhelming when I hear of the increased suicide rates, divorces, economic downturns, political agendas, racially motivated offenses, kidnappings, trafficking, abuse, ongoing injustice. It can feel like A LOT. In the midst of all of this—the good and the bad—everyday life is still happening, and there is a way you can do it well. So, to start this year off I want to dig into the NT with you. I want to talk about how we can the truth and beauty from the gospel—that Jesus Christ is the son of God, that he died for our sins, that we can received him and the gift of salvation and submit to his authority in our lives—and as a result also apply His wisdom to our lives in realistic, relatable and practical ways that lead to an inwardly and outwardly obvious lifestyle change.
Yes.
It can be done.
Yes.
We are going to do it.
This is just the beginning.
You ready?
Let’s start 2023 off right.

In the winter there are certain animals that hibernate. Hibernation is a way that animals deal with the harshness of winter. They find a safe place and they stay there until the dangers of winter pass. Hibernating animals are so still, and disengaged, --they barely breathe, their body temperature drops, and those who happened upon them would think them dead. What those observers don’t know is that the hibernation isn’t just a decision to detach—it’s a survival mechanism. One that was prepped for—the hard work has already been done…this rest…this slowing down season, allows energy to be conserved, and to prevent the animal from feeling the harshness of this bitter season.
Seasons of our lives will vary. Who we are, how we cope, where we find ourselves, and how we got there will also vary. In some season, you will thrive, in some you will survive, and in others you’ll be grateful to exist. There is no shame attached to how you find yourself approaching the end of this year. Because the end of a calendar year does not define where you are in this season. So maybe for you, you don’t feel strong. You don’t want to engage. You don’t have the desire to push. Maybe you’re in a hibernation stage of this season—a place and a time where you buckle down, limit contact with the outside world, find refuge with your Father, reflect, mediate on His promises, and conserve your energy---in doing so you avoid the harshness of a hard season.
I’m with you.

In this series we’ve been talking Endgame—the final stage of a game (for us, the final stage of the year). We unearthed five powerful truths that we could glean from the first two episodes, which include:
Here are some truths we’ve taken from our series so far
It’s time to come out of hiding—you have no business threshing wheat in a winepress. The world needs you and your gifts.
Go in the strength you do have—do what you can with what you have for now. God is sending you.
Take on the mind of Christ—start to see yourself the way God sees you; because He is with you, you are exactly who you need to be to do exactly what he’s called you to do.
Do it scared. –It’s okay to be scared. Do it anyway.
And last but not least.
Tonight, we are going to meet Gideon on the pages of Scripture once again, as God teaches him how to weed out and discern the perfect team to accomplish, his calling. Have you ever known what God called you to do, assembled the team you thought you needed to have, only to find out that God could do more with less? No? Oh well you’re in for a treat.

Last week we started talking Endgame—our determination to finish the year strong with a game plan, a final move, a huge push. In doing so we discussed one of the mindsets that can jeopardize our ability to do just that—hiding. Hiding ourselves and hiding our gifts. Imposter syndrome, feeling inadequate or ill equipped is something everyone deals with at some point in time, especially if you’re called to a vision, a mission, a plan, a purpose, a calling that is bigger than you. And if any of those things came from the mouth of God, then yes friend, it’s bigger than you. It’s supposed to be that way. Tonight, we’re going to continue this conversation with God and Gideon—what do we do when we don’t think we have what it takes? What if we don’t feel like the mighty warrior that God says we are? How do we finish strong, when we barely know how to start? Let’s talk about it—Wheat in the Winepress-Stop Hiding Part 2 begins now.

When we refer to 'endgame', we mean the final stage of a game. Now your life is nothing to play with, that's for sure, and I doubt this is your final stage, but we ARE at the END of a year. At the beginning of 2022 we talked about intentionality--understanding that acceleration doesn’t happen by accident (if you haven’ t listened to that episode, I highly recommend you pause and do that now). As we wrap up this year, you’re going to be tempted to ease up. To hold off. To wait and see what happens. Let me tell you.
Nothing.
Nothing happens if you don’t go.
It’s go time baby.
It’s endgame.
So in this series, we’re going to start tackling the ways we may be getting in our own way. Starting with hiding.—Hiding ourselves. And hiding our gift.

Can you believe that we are approaching the last month of 2022? As cliché as it sounds, I can’t help but mention that this year has FLOWN by. This is a great opportunity for us to not only close out the Unconventional Gratitude series, but also to gear ourselves up to finish this year STRONG. Look now is not the time to get complacent. With only a few weeks left in the year, we can be tempted to push our goals off to January 1st. But nothing magical happens on that date. Whatever you could accomplish then, you can accomplish now. Tonight, we are going to talk about why it's important to be grateful for holy confrontations. Want to know why they’re so impactful and have the ability to launch you forward like never before? Welcome back to a third installment in our unconventional gratitude series. The theme has been to find things that are not obvious on their face that we can still be grateful for. This means when have to really think about it before we choose to express gratitude. Each of these things so far have required some spiritual maturity... the ability to understand that while they always don’t feel good at the time, they can produce marvelous results—we’re talking about transformation. Now if you’re new here at Rooted then you should know that here we aim to bridge this gap between God’s Word and our reality—through real talk about real issues, encouraging practical application to produce supernatural results. Our very first episode, was Acceleration Doesn’t Happen by Accident; by acceleration we mean development, elevation, -- we mean growth. Growth doesn’t happen by accident. In fact, not only does growth not happen by accident, but it also rarely happens in the open. Well, you might be asking, then where does we grow? Good question, and we’re going to answer tonight, on Grateful for the Gap.

If you’ve ever lived in a big city then you know traffic, delays, detours, they’re all pretty common. Usually traffic is the result of a lot of people trying to go the same route at the same time. It’s nobody’s fault, it’s just an unfortunate syncing of schedules, too few available lanes, and high likelihood that someone is going to crash. Life is a lot like those busy highways. Many of us have a roadmap -- goals and dreams, aspirations and plans for what we think is the best version of our lives. None of us intentionally plan to get lost, blow a tire, or run out of gas. Nevertheless, we often find ourselves at a proverbial pitstop, wondering what in the world am I supposed to do now? Even those most confident and well-navigated will still find ourselves surprised by the unexpected traffic stops of life—deadlocks, accidents, pile ups. In an attempt to help us avoid those things for which we may not be prepared, God in his infinite wisdom, can cause a delay or construct a detour. How we handle those delays and detours affects everything that comes next. Have you ever felt held up by unnecessary traffic, doing your best to get to your destination, praying desperately that you won’t’ be forced to wait any longer, only to be met with a delay or detour—I’ve been there. Let’s talk about it on tonight’s episode: The Long Way Around.

One of the hardest aspects of prayer is that when you pray, you have to trust that God has heard you, and that He will grant your request. We refrain, as believers, from treating God like our own personal genie in a bottle, at least we try to. But we’d be lying if we said that we didn’t want what we’ve so passionately prayed for—especially when we believe He’s the only one that can do make it happen. In 1 Samuel we learn about a young woman named Hannah who mastered the art of transparent prayer and who received the very thing she requested of God. What was Hannah’s secret and how can we confidently approach God with the same heart of expectancy? We’ll talk about it tonight on For What? The Purpose Behind Your Prayer.

In card games, the trump card is the winning card. For example, if you play a trump card during a game of Spades, it means that you take the whole trick - in other words, you'll pick up every card on the table. Any card game in which one card or suit ranks the highest has a trump card, and that card is the one that wins the hand.
I don’t know about you, but sometimes I definitely feel like I’m playing the game of life. And one thing I’ve learned is that no matter what’s on the table, I’ve always got a trump card in my hand. No matter the circumstances, challenges, or the feelings I may be experiencing, at the end of the day I know I win. How? Because obedience is my trump card. And when I play it, I take everything on the table. Want to know how? Stay tuned for this episode: The Trump Card.

As a former family law attorney, there was one lesson that I learned very quickly. People don’t play when it comes to their money or their kids. Tonight, on our last episode of Honor & Anger, we are going to be talking about the touchy subject of co-parenting. In this series we’ve dissected Ephesians 6:1-4, where we acknowledged two main truths: children should obey and honor their parents and parents should make that easy to do. The subject becomes a little more complex when we talk about what parenting looks like in both married couples and amongst single parents. How do parents get on the same page about parenting styles, goals, approaches. Are there differences between how duties and obligations are distributed between mom and dad, or custodial and non-custodial parent. Are there things we need to adjust? Are there things we are willing to admit the other parent just plain does better? And what happens when as parents, we just can’t agree on what to do?
Tonight, we’re taking a little bit of a different approach, I’ve invited three trusted friends to discuss their experiences in co-parenting. I’ll introduce them to you a little later. But I want you to be encouraged by knowing that what always has been doesn’t always have to be—so if your coparenting relationship with your spouse or with your child’s other parent is not ideal or effective, just know with effort it can better.
Let’s get started.

Generational Trauma. The words themselves evoke a feeling of discomfort. I get it. Who wants to think or talk about the past, especially if it wasn’t pleasant? But as Carl Jung, a Swiss psychologist once said, “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” We have been created with a calling and purpose, especially as parents, and we cannot allow a pattern of thought or behavior to overwhelm our future. Our children and future generations are depending on it.
If this is the first episode in the Honor & Anger series that you’re listening to, I hope this doesn’t scare you away! But we couldn’t have a series on how to be effective parents if we didn’t address how our pasts may be affecting HOW we parent. Remember this series hinges on Ephesians 6:1-4, where our children are called to obey and honor us, and we are encouraged to make that easy to do. Unaddressed and unresolved trauma can make both of those tasks more difficult than they need to be. Let’s wrestle with this on tonight’s episode, Honor and Anger Part V, Generational Trauma.

Here at Rooted, we focus on practical application of God’s Word to our lives—believing that in doing so we can be transformed into not only who God created us to be but who we truly desire to be. I don’t know about you, but a real-life area where most people admittedly need help is with parenting. God cares about us as parents and He especially cares about HOW we parent. This series Honor and Anger addresses the roles we play and the roles our children play in a relationship that ought to mirror our relationship with God—one where the children pay honor and respect, and the parent makes it easy to do. If you’re unsure what I mean by that, you’ll find our first episode in this series extremely helpful! Two days ago, I scrolled through my timeline on Facebook looking at all the wonderful pictures of children heading back to school (I live in Texas by the way, so school began for us on August 15th). I imagined the nerves of the little ones who were starting school for the first time, or the excitement of the ones heading into their senior year of high school. I thought about the parents who may share some of the same nerves or excitement but who also be experiencing the heavy weight of expectation. Parenting is not a game for the weak. As we seek to parent in a way that is loving and effective, trying to balance discipline with reward can be challenging. Instilling respect versus fear. Encouraging versus molding. Loving versus enabling. It’s A LOT friend. A lot. In this coming series Honor and Anger we’re going to discuss practical tips for parenting that will leave our children enriched and our relationships stronger. So why Honor and Anger? The title is inspired by our series scripture Ephesians 6:1-4. God’s word commands that our children honor us…but it also commands that we not stir up anger in them. There’s a lot to discuss between the first command and the second. If you’re a parent desiring to be more effective or someone who desires to one day be a parent, this series is for you. Honor & Anger begins tonight. Let’s get started.

If you’ve ever struggled with in the areas of unmet desire, dissatisfaction, or being discontent, this episode is for you.

As we reach the mid-year mark, now is a great time to assess and evaluate our progress as it relates to the goals we set at the beginning of the year. I want to propose to you that if you are not seeing the results that you want, or you are seeing progress but not enjoying the process, that a tool you may be missing in your arsenal is boundary setting. Boundaries allow us to draw a line in the sand and manage expectations for ourselves and others. Boundaries aren't just about saying 'no', they are about freeing you up to say 'yes' to the things that are most important to you in this season. Join us tonight as we discuss boundary setting the King's way! Let's go!

As we close this Trauma series, we wrap it up with a discussion about Racial Trauma. What is it? Where did it come from? And what are we expected to do about it? We'll discuss terms like white privilege, equity vs. equality, and critical race theory. But remember, none of what we discuss can leave Christ out. What does He say about loving one another? What does being a believer have to do with racism? And does the church play a role in furthering racism both within and outside of the body? Lord please help us. Let's finish this series out friends.

I know! I know! This week was supposed to be about racial trauma. Don't worry, we're not going to forget. But the Lord impressed upon my heart to dig a little deeper with church trauma, specifically false teaching and the effects it has on unbelievers and believers alike. This is a tough one guys because it confronts not only those who are deliberately leading others astray, but our personal responsibility to know God's Word, prioritize Him over our own desires, and to make adjustments when we are not in alignment with truth. Yeah, it stings. Just know this applies to me just as much as everyone tuning in. Growth is often uncomfortable. But we're too hungry not to eat, right? Right. Let's go.

Churches are imperfect because they are made up of imperfect people. That’s fair. But we can’t dismiss that churches ought to be places where certain abuses do not and should not occur; and when those in positions of power deliberately use their positions to lure and abuse those who are seeking refuge in Christ—trauma results. Going further we also recognize that not all trauma is the result of outright abuse, some is the result of poor teaching, intentionally or unintentionally, leading to confusion and misapplication. This saying is true: What most people believe about the Bible isn’t what the Bible says—it's what someone else told them the Bible says. Is God in control? If so, why do bad things happen to good people? How do we know the Bible can be trusted? Isn’t Christianity a white man’s religion forced onto slaves to coerce submission? Tonight we are going to explore the trauma that comes from the most unexpected place—the church. This one is personal. Stay tuned.

Have we let culture completely destroy the purpose and beauty of romantic relationships? If you’ve spent any time on any social media platform you’ll find that men and women are more often pitted against one another than encouraged to love one another. From the late Kevin Samuels, to relationship advice that’s rooted in everything but the Word of God, we're constantly berated and inundated with a negative picture of commitment and monogamy. Who and what the world says makes for a great mate, tends to lean more towards shallow standards, empty promises, and heavy baggage. Tonight we’re going to discuss relational trauma: narcissism, independence and how to heal a broken heart. Stay tuned I don't think you want to miss this one.

We always talk about how resilient children are. But should they have to be? Yes, we want them to bounce back from friendships ending, or a scratched knee, or the loss of a big game, but neglect, emotional abuse, physical abuse, rejection, abandonment? Those aren’t things we should expect a child to just bounce back from. And yet, many of us have convinced ourselves that we’ve done that very thing. Join me tonight as we address childhood trauma and seven key steps to healing and reclaiming your life.

Have you ever heard the phrase “snake in the grass”? It's often used to describe a treacherous or deceitful person. What makes a snake in the grass so dangerous is that its often hidden and seemingly harmless. That alone could preach a whole sermon. Many of us have been bitten by the betrayal of a loved one or a crippling disaster. And what made it so devastating? We never saw it coming. So what do you when the unexpected happens? How do you recover when the venom (what they left behind) is worse than the bite? Let’s talk about it on tonight’s episode “Shake it Off”.

Welcome to Part 2 of You So Crazy, our brief but thorough dive into the discussion of mental health and the stigma it carries in Christian culture. Last week we discussed breaking down those initial barriers that make talking about mental health uncomfortable-we talked about being free to admit that everyone wants to be happy and with as little effort as possible, that it's not a sin to desire a life filled with circumstances that induce happiness, nor is it prideful for you to want to be seen and affirmed. While I believe the church does a lot of things right and that we’d be lost without it, I can also admit we’ve got some work to do. What you love, you assess, and improve. So, let’s go...the assessment continues…Stay tuned.

When I was a child I can remember sneaking and watching Martin Lawrence’s stand up comedy show You So Crazy! He is and has always been one of my favorite comediennes. Whether in his stand up or on his namesake television show, the phrase “You so Crazy” would normally follow some joke or funny act, and with a little slap on the shoulder, someone, usually a woman, would say…you so crazy. That’s where the title of this episode comes from. But I’d be lying if I said this subject was a joking matter. Mental health and the stigma it carries in Christian culture has been a point of contention amongst believers and unbelievers alike. I will say I think the church is doing better at having these conversations, but it still remains a questions as to why is this even a thing? Why are we so befuddled that people are dealing with situations that cause, or are exacerbated mental health challenges? How can you turn on a television, or even look outside and not be reminded of the fallen world we live in? Yeah, people are going through things, people need help, people need to be seen. This is a time for the church to step up, share and live what God has promised and delivered—a peace that surpasses all understanding. Join me as we dig into this topic and try to gain some footing…You So Crazy! begins now.

For where there is a lack of awareness there can be no improvement. Introduction: Last week we literally dug into what it means to tear ourselves down. We discussed how we use comparison, pride, misconceptions about love and a lack of faith to beat ourselves up. I can’t wait to get to that part. I’m all about a redemption story. It’s the hope for me. Join me on today’s episode: The Rebuild.

Now if you’ve ever spent a handful of Sundays in church or Bible study, you’ve probably heard some reference to giftedness—the idea that God has placed within each of us a special gift, talent, or ability that He designed us to use to serve others and to give him glory. Well, it’s not just an idea, the Bible confirms it. If you’ve never been "churched", then you’ve still heard of this concept, except maybe it was referred to as purpose or your life’s calling, or "what in the world were you put on this earth to do"? We’re going to discuss what giftedness means and what are we expected to do with it. This is for my dreamers, entrepreneurs, creators, change makers, purpose pushers and those that know in their hearts they have something of value to contribute to the world. How do we know who we are committing our time, energy and lives to? And is there a way to find out before it’s too late? I believe there is. If you grew up in church or were ever a part of a singles ministry, you’re probably thinking when it comes to relationships in the Christian context, that you've heard it all before. While I’m not going to gas you up like this is all revolutionary—I am confident that if you dig in and apply these principles, you will transform how you view, initiate, and engage in relationships, and that alone has to the power to change your life. Dating is designed to be an information gathering process by which you can determine if someone is a suitable mate for you. And when done correctly and maturely, it allows you to get to know people on a deeper level while also managing expectations, clearly communicating needs, and parting ways if necessary, without offense. Today we’re going to dive into this idea of being equally yoked—where did it come from? What does it mean? And what are the consequences of failing to apply this wise principle to our lives?
