Ever wondered how the resilience of the human neck could be the unsung hero in the battle against sports-related concussions and CTE? That's the revelation Mike Jolly brings to the table with the Iron Neck, a device designed with the well-being of athletes in mind. As a former UCLA football and wrestling enthusiast, Mike shares his compelling journey and the aha-moment that led to the invention that's shaking up strength training. We unravel the science behind neck strength as a critical factor for reducing concussion risk, challenging traditional perspectives on athletic preparation, and revealing how Mike's innovation is carving out space in gyms across the globe for a safer future in sports.

Navigating the intense world of youth sports, we take a sobering look at the long-term impact of underreported concussions and the cultural hurdles that keep young athletes from speaking up. It's a candid discussion, sprinkled with heartfelt anecdotes, that uncovers the widespread implications of head injuries beyond the professional arena. Learn how strengthening often-neglected muscle groups like the neck can offer an armor of protection, and why introducing this regimen is vital across all genders and sports disciplines. The conversation takes a turn towards the kinetic chain connecting neck and core strength, shedding light on societal issues like 'tech neck' and the importance of postural health in our tech-dominated world.

For anyone questioning the relevance of neck strength outside the realm of contact sports, the Iron Neck's story of skepticism to acclaim is a testament to its broader applications. From alleviating pain to improving mobility, Mike and I discuss how embracing a proactive approach to fitness can mitigate the health risks associated with sedentary lifestyles. Parents, coaches, and anyone with a stake in the sports community will find value in this episode, as we highlight the critical nature of protecting the brain and the role of neck strength in a holistic approach to athlete welfare. Join us for an episode that's not only about the mechanics of a groundbreaking device but also a deeper conversation about the future of sports safety and wellness.

http://athleticism.com

In early 1998, Justin Frandson read an article in the newspaper about one of the greatest pioneers of Sports Performance, Dean Brittenham at Scripps Clinic, La Jolla California, making athletes better athletes through the most creative approaches. The article raved about the track-based speed and power program with stretching, coordination drills, ambidexterity, balance, strength, and more. Justin visited the prestigious location, and started his passion and gifts of facilitating athletic development with athletes and teams of all ages and levels. The article spoke of high school athletes becoming D1 athletes and D1 athletes turning pro. Justin's past and current clientele list consists of many of the highest ranked professional athletes in the US.

The results are instant and tangible in every athlete, no matter their sport. The workouts take even the best athletes in the world out of their coordination comfort zone, to develop more neuroplasticity, in-turn developing more pathways from the brain to the body. This infinite flow consistently brings athletes and performers to their ideal Alpha brainwave state for superior performances. This nerve work and brain coordination entrainment to develop performance is the essence of ATHLETICISM.

In addition to Justin being blessed with an exceptional mentor who was one of the foremost pioneers in Sports Performance, Justin has the innate gifts of developing human performance and seeing things others don't. He has the gifts of intuition and healing to facilitate in optimizing nerve health for injury prevention, recovery, and performance. His sensory nerve treatments for vision and spatial awareness double as concussion protocol. He is known for facilitating getting sports concussions back faster than ever.

Welcome to a transformative session where we dive deep into the significance of honoring our commitments to ourselves. Here, you'll learn that true discipline doesn't emerge overnight; rather, it's a product of 10,000 commitments, consistently kept. As the old saying goes, "Rome wasn’t built in a day." Similarly, an unwavering sense of self-worth is constructed brick by brick, with every commitment we uphold.

Why is it crucial to keep the promises we make to ourselves? Each time you stick to a commitment, you send a clear message to your psyche: “I matter. I respect myself enough to follow through.” Over time, these repeated actions lay the foundation for genuine self-respect. Moreover, when you consistently make and maintain these personal commitments, you develop an internal sense of reliability. You become your own rock.

Our health is a primary area where these commitments manifest. Deciding to eat healthily, to exercise regularly, or even to maintain mental well-being might seem mundane on the surface. However, every time you follow through on such decisions, you reinforce the idea that you are worth the effort. Such actions not only boost your self-esteem but also cultivate an environment where well-being thrives.

Throughout this video, we’ll delve into practical strategies to help you:

  • Recognize and prioritize the commitments you make to yourself.
  • Understand the intrinsic link between personal commitments and self-confidence.
  • Cultivate habits that bolster your ability to follow through, even when the going gets tough.
  • Celebrate small victories, understanding that each fulfilled commitment is a step closer to unshakeable self-respect.

By the end of this session, you won’t just be equipped with theoretical knowledge. You'll possess actionable steps, ready to be implemented, ensuring that you consistently honor the promises you make to yourself. More importantly, you'll come to recognize the monumental shift that arises in self-perception when you become a person who follows through, consistently and unerringly.

In conclusion, respecting oneself isn't merely about positive affirmations or self-care routines. It's deeply rooted in the way we treat our personal commitments. Just as we wouldn't break promises made to loved ones, we must grant ourselves the same courtesy. After all, the relationship you have with yourself sets the tone for every other relationship in your life. So, as you journey with us through this video, remember: to truly respect yourself is to uphold each commitment, to see each promise through, and to build a life where discipline and self-confidence intertwine seamlessly.

Join us on this enlightening journey and discover the unparalleled power of commitments. Remember, the road to unshakeable self-confidence begins with a single promise kept to oneself. And from there, it's a journey of 10,000 more. Dive in and transform your relationship with yourself today.

Ever wondered how understanding your body can unlock your health potential? In an enlightening conversation with martial artist and former classmate Tom Richards, we explore the fascinating world of fascia, the connective tissue in our bodies. Tom shares his personal experience with Rolfing, manual therapy, his holistic approach to bodywork, and how this technique allowed him to overcome a hip injury. We delve into the role of fascia in maintaining our health, discussing myofascia and its contribution to the fascia continuum. Tom enlightens us about the strain patterns that can distort our fascia, likening it to a wetsuit that doesn’t quite fit.

The journey continues as we venture into the realm of proprioception and the profound role of breath in our wellbeing. Tom draws on centuries-old Eastern wisdom on breath and its validation through modern science. We assess the transformative potential of breath as a point of leverage in changing our state of being. From there, we examine how an overdeveloped neck can limit your breath and how understanding back breathing can help mitigate tension in the upper back. Our discussion also addresses how to appropriately confront shoulder impingement and maintain pelvic mobility.

We conclude our enlightening conversation by revisiting the concept of Rolfing, while also considering other holistic approaches to health and fitness. Tom elucidates how these techniques can address chronic injuries and advance overall health and wellbeing.

At the end of the episode, Barton discusses how with his coaching program, he emphasizes the value of integrating blood work, VO2 max testing, and DEXA scans for a comprehensive approach to anti-aging and strength enhancement. Barton can be reached for more info in the links below.

He enlisted in the Marine Corps upon graduating high school in 1989. After boot camp, he was stationed overseas in Iwakuni, Japan, where he worked out at the military base gym with veteran marines. Ricardo Jr.’s co-worker signed him up to compete in the Iwakuni Japan Marine Corps Based Bodybuilding Championships without his knowledge his second year overseas.

Ricardo Jr. continued to compete in a few small competitions in Japan, then was stationed in San Diego, California. The NPC held military shows, and he saw success in these events.

He competed against the best natural athletes globally with the ABA and had great success. He continued to compete with ABA and other federations to test his limits.

Philip Ricardo Jr. turned pro in 2003 with the PNBA. Since then, he’s competed as a natural bodybuilder for almost 20 years and has won professional titles in five different drug-free organizations.

Barton sits down with David to talk about his path as an athlete, father, and fitness instructor. David has completed 17 Ironman Triathlons including the World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. They have taught David about discipline, mindset, focusing on the "controllables" and much more. He is also 5 ½ years sober and so much of who he is and what he prioritized today comes from his sobriety and being the best father he can be for his two teenage kids.

Behind his exterior of muscles and a big smile, Austin local David Garza is just as compassionate at heart as he lets on.

As one of Austin’s most motivated fitness instructors, Garza gladly admits to spending time surfing Pinterest for motivating quotes to share with others. Referred to as the “Tony Robbins of spin” by some of his clients, Garza cherishes being able to make others feel special, whether that’s by playing someone’s favorite song during a class or sitting down with someone for coffee to help them tackle the obstacles in their way to a healthier lifestyle.

“I have been pretty blessed to have found this career, where I can use music and fitness and really talk in a deep way of how we are doing,” Garza says. “And, because I have gone through some ridiculously challenging things in my life, I am able to look at somebody and say ‘Hey man, I get it. Let’s try and figure out what’s going wrong, pinpoint it and see what we can do in a positive way to figure out what we need to get done to get you out of this funk.’”

When Garza came out of college, his lifestyle included smoking and drinking, and at one point, he even weighed close to 300 pounds. Coming up on four years of being sober, Garza says he can consider his past experiences struggling with nutrition and unhealthy habits as a blessing, because they make it easy for him to be able to discuss topics that can typically be hard to talk about.

“I get to share with a lot of people who are struggling, and I have been down that path, and I feel like I can truly relate to somebody struggling with lots of different things,” Garza says. “While I know there are a lot of challenges out there, I also know that you can overcome those challenges, because you want to be a little bit better than you were yesterday.”

Garza is heading to Nice, France in September to compete in another Ironman Triathlon World Championships.

To contact David, find him on Instagram @davidgarza1

He is currently teaching classes at HIT Athletic in North Central Au

Barton and Gabriel sit down to discuss the world of Opera, performance and Gabe's mindset of performing Internationally at the highest level. Highlights from this podcast include:
- Life lessons from his Voice Teacher Elizabeth Parham stating "that little voice in your head telling us we're not enough... that is the devil"
- How Gabe thinks about performing for thousands of people
- what type of things Gabe does to prepare himself for a big performance.
- how the voice works and how he's able to create such powerful sound and sing professionally.

Gabriel's Bio:
Multiple Grammy Award winning baritone Gabriel Manro has been called “a new kind of baritone: not lyric, not helden, not Kavalier, not Bariton-Martin — none of those. Rather, he’s a knock-down baritone.” --San Francisco Classical Voice. Indeed, Manro regularly sings dramatic baritone roles such as Don Carlo di Vargas (La forza del destino), Andrei Shchelkalov (Boris Godunov), and Tonio (I Pagliacci)

Opera News describes Manro as “Gifted with a striking, sinister baritone that remains strong, even and sonorous throughout the range, he tears into Verdi's music with a vengeance.” -- Opera News.
Mr. Manro made his professional operatic debut as Third Inmate in Jake Heggie's ground-breaking opera Dead Man Walking for Opera Pacific with Frederica von Stade. He went on to perform the role of Inquisitor in Opera Pacific's Candide. Mr. Manro has appeared in numerous contemporary and world-premiere operas and musicals:
As Muscovite Trader in John Corigliano’s The Ghosts of Versailles (Pentatone Music: Grammy--Best Opera Recording), as the Mousling in the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Alice in Wonderland by Unsuk Chin, the Computer in Los Angeles Opera’s The Fly by film composer Howard Shore (Lord of the Rings Trilogy); as The Chauffeur in Opera Santa Barbara’s Séance on a Wet Afternoon by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell); and as Angry Voter in Los Angeles Opera’s Il Postino (Sony Classical DVD). Manro created the role of President Lincoln in Golden Gate Opera's world-premiere Civil War Epic: Lincoln and Booth. Off-Broadway, Mr. Manro led the original cast of Center for Contemporary Opera’s production of Oration by Line Tjørnhøj. On television, Manro appeared as Joel Lynch and Father Jackson in the European premiere live telecast of William Mayer’s: A Death in the Family at the Hungarian National Theater and Opéra Grand D’Avignon which was voted “audience favorite” opera. Gabriel also played Jafar in Walt Disney Company’s original stage production of Aladdin.

Gabe's European operatic debut was as Doctor Bartolo (Il barbiere di Siviglia) with Corfu Opera in Greece. His extensive repertoire and engagements have also included the roles of Bluebeard (Bluebeard’s Castle), Count Almaviva, Bartolo, Antonio (Le nozze di Figaro), Guglielmo, Don Alfonso (Cosí fan tutte), Don Giovanni (Don Giovanni).
See Mr. Manro next as Osmund in the world-premiere stage production of Siegfried Wagner’s Rainulf and Adelasia during this summer’s Bayreuth Festival in Germany.

Barton and Lauren sit down to discuss how an athlete's mindset is pivotal to long term success and wellbeing for the athlete and person striving to compete. In this hour long interview, Barton and Lauren discuss how she realized there was such a need for a "Re-Imagined" Coaching concept to help these athletes stay healthy mentally, emotionally and physically while preparing for competition.

Follow Lauren on Instagram: https://instagram.com/mrslaurenammon

Check out her website: https://performancereimagined.com

About Lauren:
I started swimming when I was five because my mom says I had WAY too much energy and was asking for A LOT of snacks during my sisters’ swim meets. Since I was already there she signed me up for the team and well, as ‘they’ say, the rest is history.

I LOVED everything about swimming. From the laughter with my teammates to the hard sets to dancing at swim meets like an absolute fool listening to CDs on a discman (yes, I’m THAT old). It was my world, and I never wanted to leave.

For 17 years I had the privilege of calling myself an elite athlete, even making it to a D1 program on a full ride. While I was wildly successful by all counts - KY high school state champ, top 3 finisher in the Mid American Conference - there was a snag. I was a perfectionist whose expectations were so high, nothing less than PR was acceptable anytime I dove in the water.

I didn’t know how else to be. I was a driven go-getter who literally felt a constant pressure to perform at my peak every. single. time no matter if I was in the depths of hell with training or fully tapered. It was perfection or bust. It was PR or nothing. There was no middle ground.

I didn’t know how to get out of my own head! And while all of my coaches told me I was there (yes, thank you Captains Obvious) I was never told HOW to get out of it. Just to ‘figure it out’. I found my way out sometimes, but I always chalked it up to being a fluke. Not something I could consciously do if I worked at it.

So alas, when I was finally forced to retire in 2004, I left thinking, '“ugghhhhhh I could have been so much more had I just figured out how to get out of my own head.”

Fast forward to September 2021, the postponed 2020 Olympic Games. As I watched Simone Biles remove herself from competition and Katie Ledecky hide emotion after winning Gold but it not reflecting her best performance, I started to think about the mental well-being of athletes. Minutes later Michael Phelps said what I didn’t know I had been thinking for over 30 years. “Competing [at this level] is really overwhelming. We just want someone to talk to. We just want someone who listens and allows us to be vulnerable and doesn’t want to fix us.”

BOOM! There it was. It finally all made sense. I could take the experiences from swimming and combine them with education and training I received after it to give athletes what I never got - the HOW behind getting out of your own head. And thus Performance Reimagined was born - to support elite student-athletes like you to train your minds like you train your bodies.

Let's be 1% better each week by Forging a Powerful Athlete's Mindset

Clark and Barton sit down to talk swimming, preparation for big meets, how his parents influenced his success, and much more.

More on Clark Smith
Clark Smith is a 6’9″ freestyle and butterfly specialist and student-athlete at the University of Texas. Born April 17, 1995 in Atlanta, Ga., Smith had the ability to be a great swimmer within his genes – his parents, John and Tori, also swam for Texas and his mother was a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic Team. Smith came within .04 seconds of breaking the National High School record in the 100 butterfly, an event he was on the USA Swimming Junior National Team for.

University of Texas
2013-2014
In his freshman season Smith swam at the Big 12 Championships, placing fourth in the 500-yard freestyle, fourth in the 200-yard butterfly and sixth in the 100-yard butterfly.

The 500-yard free was Smith’s first event at NCAA’s, and he immediately made a statement. Smith qualified for the championship final first coming out of the preliminary heats. In the final, Smith took out the first 200 yards in 1:38.02, a quick 200-yard free time in itself, and he held on until Florida’s Dan Wallace took over the lead at the 350-yard mark. But it was Smith’s last 50 yards that pulled him away — he out-split Wallace 24.03 to 25.28 to win his first national championship.

Smith then took on the 200-yard free — he qualified for the semi-final, and finished 11th overall just 0.41 seconds behind the heat’s winer. On the same night Smith led off the 800-yard free relay for Texas that took 8th. For his final individual event of the meet Smith took on the 200-yard fly, an event that was largely expected to be won by Texas. Three Texas athletes qualified for the championship final in the 200-yard fly, including Smith. Texas went 1-2 in the event, but Smith unfortunately was disqualified for a one-hand touch in the championship final of the event.

2015-2016

At the Big 12 Championships Clark won the 1,650 in a new school and Big 12 record of 14:31.29. He also was a member of the Texas 800 yard freestyle relay that took gold and finished 4th in the 500 yard freestyle. At the NCAA meet, Clark didn’t enjoy the same success as his sophomore year. As the defending champion and top seed in the 500 yard freestyle, Clark didn’t manage to reach the finals, finishing 21st in the prelims. He was also the top seed in the mile but finished 12th in the prelims.

2016 Rio Olympic Games

In his first Olympic Games, Smith earned a gold medal for his heat swim in the 800 meter freestyle relay. He lead the team off with a 1:47.20 split. Smith, Jack Conger, Gunnar Bentz and Ryan Lotche combined in a time of 7:06.74 to put Team USA through to the final in second position.

2017 World Championships

On day one Smith missed out on the 400 meter freestyle final after finishing 12th in 3:47.12. Two days later was back in action in the 800 meter freestyle where he finished 10th in the heats in 7:51.83. In his final swim, Smith won a bronze medal. It came in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay where Smith swam in the heats to put Team USA through to the final in 7th. Blake Pieroni, Townley Haas, Jack Conger and Zane Grothe combined in the final to finish third behind Great Britain and Russia.

Former NFL safety Michael Griffin sits down with Barton to talk fatherhood, cupcakes, and his experience growing up playing High school, college, and pro football.
He takes the listener on his journey from Bowie High to the Univ. of Texas, and to the NFL. In this episode, Michael explains why aspiring athletes must get up early, do the work in the gym, and be determined to be the best on their team.

Mindset to Stay In the Game

Much of the attention is given to the physical aspect of football since it is a contact sport. However, Michael always thinks of his back against the wall, which is traced back to his high school days. He explains that when he is in that position, he can see the goal and how he can get to it. Michael then questions himself if his goal outweighs the barriers and everything else. He says that it is easy to make every excuse possible on why he could not do it. So what does this have to do with the physical aspect? Well, Michael has to know the difference between hurt and injured. An injury would mean not being able to play, and with that, it gives a window of opportunity to another player to take his spot. Therefore, Michael has developed a sense of durability with the mindset to push himself hard while securing his place in the team. Due to this way of thinking, he played with a dislocated shoulder twice. He learned to adapt quickly instead of getting off the field in order to keep his position as a safety of the team.

About Michael Griffin:

Two-time Pro-Bowler Michael Griffin’s stellar professional football career spanned ten seasons in the NFL, including stints with the Tennessee Titans, Minnesota Vikings, and the Carolina Panthers. Since retiring in 2018, Griffin’s focus has shifted to entrepreneurship, opening up a subsidiary bakery under the Gigi’s Cupcakes franchise outside of his hometown of Austin, Texas, with his life-long friends, fellow NFL standout Brian Orakpo and college classmate Bryan Hynson.

Griffin’s magnetic dexterity has served him well throughout the years as a football player, entrepreneur, and most recently, the star of a hit Microsoft commercial with his friend and former Titan teammate Brian Orakpo. Griffin resides in Austin, Texas, with his wife Shantel and their children.

Outline of the Episode:

[01:47] Lessons from sports applied in raising three kids

[07:54] Challenges that arise from communication outside the football field

[11:10] Factors that made Michael go back to Austin to raise his family

[19:21] Family dynamics: parenting strategies in creating a team within their children

[21:52] Humility goes a long way, whether in sports or fatherhood

[23:23] A competitive attitude made use in high school football

[32:48] Michael’s experience having a sports scholarship at the University of Texas

[41:30] The magic behind the team’s success, according to Michael

[45:02] How Michael handled the physical aspects of football and kept himself primed to play

[52:37] Football mindset used to put up the cupcake business

John Hansen has been a bodybuilder all of his life. Initially inspired to build a muscular physique after reading the superhero comic books he collected in his youth, John began weight training after seeing a picture of the martial arts superstar Bruce Lee. Lee looked like the closest thing John had ever seen to a superhero and he wanted to look just like him. After receiving a weight training set for Christmas at 12 years old, John started buying bodybuilding magazines to learn about what exercises he could do with the weights. Once he discovered the sport of bodybuilding, John knew what he wanted to do with his life. He set a goal for himself to win the Mr. Universe contest one day and appear in the bodybuilding magazines.

John began competing in bodybuilding competitions at the age of 16. After competing in ten teenage bodybuilding contests, John bulked up to 230 pounds at 21 years old. This was almost 100 pounds more than when he started training at 14 years old. John started competing in the open level competitions at 21 years old, eventually winning the 1986 NPC Illinois State and the 1986 NPC Mid-America contest. He also won the 1990 NPC Illinois Cup.

In 1991, John began competing in Natural Bodybuilding contests. He won the 1992 NPC Natural Illinois, the 1992 ABA Natural Mr.North America and then won the 1992 Natural Mr. Universe, a title he always wanted to win since he began bodybuilding at 14 years old. John went on to win the Natural Mr. Universe again in 1996 and he won the Masters Natural Mr. Universe in 2012. John was also the first winner of the Natural Mr. Olympia contest held in Greece in 1998.

John began writing his own training and nutrition column for Iron Man Magazine in March, 2000 and continued his column up to 2014. In 2005, John wrote his first book “Natural Bodybuilding” published by Human Kinetics. He released a series of training DVD’s in 2006.John began promoting natural bodybuilding competitions in 2007 in Chicago, eventually promoting 15 contests total.

John has been a big fan of bodybuilding since he started following the sport in 1977. He attended the Mr. Olympia contest in Columbus,Ohio in 1977-1979, 1981 and 1986. He also saw the first Arnold Classic contest in 1989. John loves the classic bodybuilding competitions from the 1970’s and ’80’s and is a big admirer of all the champion bodybuilders from that era. Backstory about Barton:Barton lives in Austin, TX with his wife Valerie and their 8 year old son, Jack. Barton's been a personal trainer for 15 years. Barton and his family love outdoor hikes, traveling, and living a healthy lifestyle. His background in the arts, sports, and working in Africa all inform his unique perspective.

Barton hung up his basketball shoes after high school and decided to pursue music; specifically vocal performance. He never sang at Davis High School, but when he arrived in San Diego, CA for college, he went for it! Barton sang in operas like "Marriage of Figaro" and "La Boheme," took acting classes, and performed a solo concert to receive his BA in Music. Before graduation, he spent a year in Aix-en-Provence studying French and traveling Europe and North Africa. Barton's two trips to Morocco instilled in him a curiosity and profound respect for the diverse cultures of West Africa. Once back in the US, he applied for the Peace Corps so he cohttps://www.instagram.com/bartonguybryan/uld travel back to Africa and immerse himself in the culture and learn about their way of life. Barton spent two years in Diadjibine, a small village of 2,500 people in Southern Mauritania, West Africa. As a Peace Corp volunteer, he taught English, helped build water pumps, and started a solar-powered computer center. The time in Mauritania shaped Barton's mindset on the importance of community, teamwork, leadership, and supporting hard-working people who don't have the resources Americans have at their fingertips.

After Peace Corps, Barton moved to New York City to pursue singing and acting. He was accepted into the Maggie Flanigan Studio and spent two years studying Meisner technique and writing a one man show about what he learned as a Peace Corps in West Africa. His show opened up new doors for him and he performed it around the country. On one of his trips, he traveled to Austin, TX where he met Valerie. Barton moved to Austin after graduating from the Acting Studio and four months later, they were married.

When Barton moved to Austin in 2007, he became a personal trainer. concurrently, Barton created a voluntourism company taking people to East and West Africa to do volunteer work and enjoying Safaris. He was introduced to Camp Gladiator in 2012 and his love for performing and passion for fitness made Camp Gladiator a perfect fit. He sold his tour company and went all in to his new role with Camp Gladiator.

The Mindset Forge Podcast is Barton's newest passion. Barton hopes the podcast will help people find the tools and inspiration to go after the things in life that matter most to them. He deliberately chooses guests from a variety of athletic and artistic backgrounds to help listeners gain multiple perspective of how they show up big for performance and how we can too.

A Sport Psychologist applies this wealth of knowledge when working with the athlete, teams, coaches, and parents and covers numerous skills which can be developed in order to improve or achieve optimal athletic performance. A Sport Psychologist is an individual who has earned a doctoral degree in Psychology, has completed an internship and post-doctoral training and passed the national examination to be a Licensed Psychologist. As a Sport Psychologist, I help nationally ranked junior athletes all the way to Olympic and professional athletes from every association. Working with these athletes we seek to improve mental toughness, personal motivation, goal-setting, and emotion management to attain their greatest athletic abilities as well as life skills in order to be a better person today and after they conclude their athletic career.

Brendan Hansen is a three time gold medalist Swimmer who showed up at the University of Texas at 18 years old and wrote “Man on a Mission” on tape and placed it on his gym locker. Why was he a man on a mission? He had just lost in the two events at the Olympic trials and was not going to represent the USA at the Olympics in 2000. That failure motivated him not just as a freshman at Texas but for the next four years. In the four years between 2000 - 2004, he would become the fastest breaststroker in the world and break the world record in the 100m and 200m events.

In this interview, Mindset Forge host Barton and Brendan discuss how failures can be so motivating, how when he was surrounded by elite swimmers at the University of Texas it brought the best out of him and how we can do that in our own lives to bring the best out of ourselves. And finally, he talks about how the culture of a great team can be the secret sauce that helps everyone level up to their maximum potential because of peer to peer accountability.

Established Mindset

From childhood, the concept of failure was already known to Brendan. He got used to failure quickly because he hung out with his brother’s friends, who are three years older than he is. His parents would describe his mindset as very much like the underdog. So when Brendan got into swimming, he quickly pushed his capabilities to the limit. He had an excellent developmental coach who was there to make every failure a learning opportunity. Whenever Brendan does something wrong, his coach would pull him to the side and tell him how to do it correctly. Having this foundation of mindset was what made Brendan ready to take head-on whatever challenge there is. Being told that he is going to fail his way to success was perceived positively rather than negatively. It was perceived as a way to grow from the experience, and that helps Brendan understand how to tweak moving forward.

Jeremy was an early adopter of CrossFit back in 2005 and began his journey as a coach and CrossFit Games competitor from 2007 - 2015 and an individual and on a team. He is married with three kids and he and his sister own CrossFit Central in Austin, TX.

In 2005 Jeremy was introduced to the sport of CrossFit his good friend and Marine, Lance Cantu. Immediately, he knew he had discovered the path he had been seeking since he first started training. This was not just a game he was going to play, but something he was going take part in that would effect positive change on a large scale. Naturally he dove in head first.

Motivated by results, Jeremy felt the best way to learn was through action. Action, hard work, dedication, and discipline were the tools he utilized to take $500 and build a million dollar garage gym facility, CrossFit Central, in less than three years. He built from the ground up. In 2005 Jeremy along with his sister Carey started by running boot camps in parks all around Austin. He worked from his one bedroom apartment day in and day out blogging, emailing and programming; strong relationships sprouted out of his emphasis on the importance of being heavily involved in the Austin fitness community. Jeremy laid the foundation for his future by hiring a strong team; coupling his drive with people who were passionate about CrossFit and dedicated to the company’s vision.

In this Solo-cast episode, Barton talks about how we have to consider the body as well as the mind when striving for our goals.  Willing ourselves toward a goal with the best of intentions will only take us so far and we must understand that the body has to be prepped properly to be able to do what we ask when the time comes.

Barton discussed mistakes he's made and how he is still reminded that a strong mindset will only take us so far.  We must do the little things to energize the body and promote healthy recovery if we expect our bodies to achieve the level of success we are striving for with our goal.

Barton and Luke sit down to discuss how Luke learned to be a key asset to the Los Angeles Lakers during his nine years wearing the purple and gold. Before he retired, Luke was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers where he made his mark being a positive force on and off the court for their franchise. Luke also recounts how his dad's two years with the Boston Celtics (85-87) helped shape his understanding of winning basketball.

Early Life:
The son of Susie Walton (Guth) and former UCLA star and NBA Hall-of-Famer Bill Walton, Luke was born in San Diego, California. He was named after his father's close friend and former teammate Maurice Lucas. He has three brothers: Adam, Nathan, and Chris. Walton attended Univ. of San Diego High School, graduating in 1998.

College Career:
Luke Walton played basketball at the Univ. of Arizona under coach Lute Olsen. His best year statistically was as a junior, when he averaged 15.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 1.6 steals and 0.6 blocks per game. He played all four years and graduated with a degree in family studies and human development. He was selected as a 2nd team all-American his senior year.
Los Angeles Lakers (2003–2012)Walton was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2003 NBA Draft with the second pick of the second round (32nd overall). Walton was a favorite of Lakers fans during his nine-year stint as a selfless, hard-working reserve player.

In 2006-07, Walton had his best year in the NBA. He scored a career-high 25 points against th Atlanta Hawks on December 8, 2006. For the season he posted career-high per-game averages in minutes, field goal percentage, steals, blocks, rebounds, assists and points as the Lakers starting small forward. Following the season, on July 12, 2007, Walton was signed by the Lakers to a 6-year, $30 million contract.
Golden State Warriors (2014–2016) In 2014, Walton became an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors with Steve Kerr. Said Walton, "We are gonna run parts of the triangle offense, and I know that thing front and back." The Warriors won the 2015 NBA Finals after they defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers in six games to give Walton his third NBA championship and first as an assistant coach.

During training camp in October 2015, Walton was appointed as the Warriors interim head coach when Steve Kerr took an indefinite leave of absence to rehabilitate his back that had been bothering him after the NBA Finals. Walton made his coaching debut in the season opener on October 27 in a 111–95 win over the New Orleans Pelicans. Three games later, he presided over the third-largest margin of victory in franchise history when the Warriors defeated the Memphis Grizzlies, 119–69, which was also the largest margin in the league since 1991. The Warriors set a new NBA record by winning their first four games by a total margin of 100 points. With a win over the Lakers on November 24, he guided the Warriors to a 16th consecutive victory to start the season, a new NBA record.

Walton was named the NBA Western Conference Coach of the Month for games played in October and November, after guiding Golden State to a 19–0 start.

In 2016, Luke became the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers and would go on to coach LeBron James in 2018-2019). Luke Currently lives with his family in Sacramento, California.

Jason and Barton discuss how to be coachable and develop a mindset of learning to be a great teammate and specialist. Lessons on how practicing creates the confidence to keep shooting even when we miss. That goes for basketball and in life.

Jason Alan Kapono (born February 4, 1981) is an American former professional basketball player. He was the first NBA player to lead the league in three point field goal percentage in two consecutive seasons, and he also won the Three Point Contest twice (2007, 2008). He won an NBA Championship with the Miami Heat in 2006.

Kapono played for the UCLA Bruins. He was the first player in the school's history to earn first-team All-Pac 10 honors for four years and was also the first UCLA player to lead the team in scoring four straight years. Kapono began his NBA career with the Cleveland Cavaliers, who drafted him in the second round of the 2003 NBA Draft. He later played in the NBA for the Charlotte Bobcats, Miami, Toronto Raptors,Philadelphia 76ers, and the LA Lakers.

Cleveland Cavaliers (2003–2004)

Kapono only played 41 games and started 3 in his first NBA season, although he led the team in three-point field goal percent at 47.7%. He averaged 3.5 PPG for his rookie campaign. He became an efficient 3pt shooter but was also good from the free-throw line, shooting 83% from the stripe. The Cavaliers finished the season 37–45 and missed the playoffs.

After his rookie season with Cleveland, he was selected by the Charlotte Bobcats in the 2004 expansion draft, where he increased his scoring average from 3.5 to 8.5 points per game. He also made the first block in Bobcats history. Kapono also increased his assist and rebound average this season, although his total FG% including 3pt% slightly declined. This was the Bobcats first ever season and the team was very young and had potential, although they were also inexperienced. The Bobcats finished the season with an 18–64 record and Kapono was a free agent.

Miami Heat (2005–2007)

Instead, he was signed as a free agent by the Miami Heat where he was part of the 2006 NBA championship team. His scoring took a toll as he had a lesser role on this elite team. His scoring average dropped down to 4.1 for the season, and he only played 51 games in the season. But he won his first and only championship with the Heat. In the 06-07 Season, Kapono's points-per-game average and minutes played significantly increased, and he led the league in 3-point percentage with 51%,, which is close to the all-time single-season three-point percentage record held by Kyle Korver (.536), and is the fourth best percentage in league season history. He averaged a career high in scoring, minutes, and rebounding. Kapono also won the Three Point Contest in the 2007 all star Weekend three-point shoot-out competition by defeating Dirk Novitski and Gilbert Areanas in the final round with a score of 24 points which tied Mark Price's record for most points in a final round of the three-point contest. The 2006–2007 season is greatly considered to be the greatest season of his career due to his accomplishments and statistics.

In this episode, Jeff and Barton discuss how he overcame so many obstacles to make the NFL and why he wrote the book "Tackle Life Head On". Through his stories of never giving up on his dream of becoming a professional football player, we learn how his mindset helped him overcome asthma, foot issues, and more to make it to the NFL. In the second part of the interview, Jeff talks about how the nineteen concussions over his professional career took their toll on his brain and has left him disabled.

Jeffrey Matthew Ogden (born February 22, 1975) is a former American football wide receiver, kickoff and punt returner in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins, and Baltimore Ravens. He played college football at Eastern Washington University.
Dallas Cowboys

Jeff Ogden was signed as an un-drafted free agent by the Dallas Cowboys after the 1998 NFL Draft. He had some notable preseason performances, but never developed into a consistent wide receiver. In the regular season, he usually was the team's fifth receiver and played mostly on special teams, making 10 tackles (tied for sixth on the team). In 1999, he returned 12 kickoffs for a 21-yard average and made five special teams tackles.

In 2000, he was allocated to the Berlin Thunder of NFL Europe, where he ranked fifth in the league with 44 receptions for 635 yards, despite missing the last two games with a sprained right foot. He also had 7 touchdowns, while helping the team finish with the league's best record (7-3) and winning World Bowl 2000. He returned to the Cowboys with a sprained foot and later injured the left one, which caused him to miss most of training camp. On August 22, he was traded to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a seventh round draft choice, which the team later used to select Peter Hunter.

Miami Dolphins[

In 2000, he reunited with offensive coordinator Chan Galley, who was his head coach with the Dallas Cowboys and also found a niche as a returner. Against the Green Bay Packers, he returned a punt for an 81-yard touchdown, the third-longest punt return in team history. He also finished the season with a league leading and franchise single-season record 17-yard punt return average. In 2001, his 11.8-yard punt return average ranked eighth in the NFL.

He left as the Dolphins' all-time team leader in punt return average (13.7-yard) and third all-time in punt return yards (700 yards).

Baltimore Ravens

On September 10, 2002, he was signed by the Baltimore Ravens to play on special teams. He appeared in 3 games and was declared inactive in 10, while sharing punt return duties. He wasn't re-signed at the end of the season.

Ogden's most productive season as a wide receiver was in 1999, when he caught 12 passes for 144 yards in 10 games. He caught his only touchdown reception in 2001. He ended his professional career playing in 67 games, registering 28 receptions for 304 yards and one touchdown.

Mark Zupan's mental toughness and a competitive drive to be his best self helped his overcome a broken neck and end up being the best quad rugby player in the world in 2008. Grit is the word that best defines the journey of Mark Zupan. An eighteen year old collegiate soccer player who played hard and partied harder got throw from a truck and ended up waking up in a ditch hanging on to his life by a branch. His paralyzing neck injury forced him to start his life over and literally learn everything over again: how to eat, pee, and get around in a chair. He recounts how he was surrounded by great friends, loving parents who helped him overcome the rehabilitation process. And it was his mental toughness kept him fighting for the opportunity to get his life back. And then he found Quad-Rugby. His world changed when he had a competitive outlet for his will to be his best. Mark's live is all about pushing the limits and in doing so, he led the USA Men's Quad-Rugby team to win a bronze medal in 2004 and Gold in 2008 in Beijing, China.

About Mark Zupan:
After his accident, Zupan graduated from Georgia Tech, became a two-time quad rugby national champion, the 2004 quad rugby player of the year. He was a member of the bronze medal-winning U.S. team at the 2004 Paralympic Games and the gold medal-winning team at the 2008 Games. He is a resident of Dripping Springs, TX.

When asked if he would "turn back the clock on that day", Zupan answered "No, I don't think so. My injury has led me to opportunities and experiences and friendships I would never have had before. And it has taught me about myself. In some ways, it's the best thing that ever happened to me."

After a soccer game on October 14, 1993, Zupan got drunk with teammates at a bar and then crawled into the back of friend Chris Igoe's truck to sleep. Some time later Igoe left the bar unaware that Zupan was asleep in the back. Driving drunk, Igoe spun out and Zupan was thrown from the pickup bed, over a fence, and into a canal, where he held onto a branch for 14 hours until being discovered by a passerby.[1] He went into hypothermia and became paralyzed as a result of the accident. Zupan has incomplete quadriplegia and is able to walk for short distances with crutches.[2]

He was also in the movie Jackass II in a skit called "Lake Jump", where his wheelchair was rigged up with carbon monoxide tanks and pushed off a ramp by Chris Pontius. Before taking off, the tanks triggered, launching him off of the ramp and into the lake.

About Murderball:

Murderball is a 2005 American documentary film about athletes who are physically disabled who play wheelchair rugby. It centers on the rivalry between the Canadian and U.S Teams leading up to the 2004 Paralympic Games.

Barton speaks on how to create lasting habits, surrounding yourself with positive, high-performing people who can help you level up, and his thoughts on the first 12 months of the Mindset Forge Podcast. 27 episodes in, Barton also talks about the future of the podcast and challenges the listener to implement ONE new habit the right way.

Backstory about Barton:Barton lives in Austin, TX with his wife Valerie and their 7 year old son, Jack. Barton's been a personal trainer for 13 years.

Once back in the US, he applied for the Peace Corps so he could travel back to Africa and immerse himself in the culture and learn about their way of life.

Sarah "Sparks" Malone discusses training people to be the best versions of themselves and how she helps people move past fear to find purpose, drive, and energy to live their best, healthiest life. She also tells her method of using her struggles as kindling to her mission and passion – to get people to love fitness.

Tailored Program

Everyone is different. There is no cookie-cutter program when it comes to fitness, so it differs for each. As a coach, Sarah’s job is to make sure that the program her clients are following is only enough for them. Her goal is to make people fall in love with fitness. The rationale behind this is that when people implement fitness in their daily lives, they discover so much about themselves and become more of who they are created to be. Sarah explains that fitness goes beyond the physical aspect; it is also a science of associating positive emotions with what they do. Having the right program makes or breaks a person’s outlook towards fitness. If they are given something more than they can handle, they tend to look at fitness in a bad light. This ultimately does not reach the goal of having people fall in love with fitness. Longevity is also important too. The purpose of fitness, after all, is to live the highest quality of life as long as possible.

About Sarah Sparks Malone:

Sarah Malone is a NASM certified personal trainer, nutrition coach & group instructor who goes beyond fitness techniques and dives into the important mindset and emotional patterns that drive us to either succeed or fail in our health & fitness pursuits.

She has developed her training and nutrition methods from the National Academy of Sports Medicine and uses the processes taught by Tony Robbins, Ed Mylett, Brendan Burchard, and many more to dive into the core of what creates the habits and patterns in our life.

Bodybuilding takes discipline and focus on maintaining physique. Rosada competes in the bikini division, and it is all about symmetry; the shape of the body matters. The muscle tone should be defined, and in this division, they do certain poses: front, side, and back. These poses are where the symmetry is zoned in, and the muscle mass up top needs to be symmetrical to the muscle mass at the bottom. As for most physical competitions, participants are categorized according to age, height, and weight. To maintain her physique, Rosada sticks to her routine. Diet is an essential element in bodybuilding, so she spends time and energy in the kitchen preparing her meals as much as she spends time training in the gym. She says that balance plays a significant role in her day-to-day routine. Rosada is strict in counting her calorie intake to keep her weight at a level needed for her competition. Cardio training also depends on her physique, so she has to make adjustments from time to time. It takes commitment to become a bodybuilder. Rosada is one of the many who are more than just the muscle.

Bethany Shadburne explains why she stopped gymnastics and eventually shifted her focus to being an elite CrossFit athlete. In this episode, she shares her journey, and the lessons learned being an athlete going to that level. She also provides nuggets on simple, truthful reasons to stay healthy and effective in sports.

A Combination of Existing Exercises

People often get confused when Bethany mentions CrossFit. She is always mistaken for a bodybuilder or a weightlifter. CrossFit is a combination of exercises that are already existing. It involves lifting barbells, running, swimming, gymnastic movements, and bodyweight movements. Bethany did every activity in the past before she started CrossFit, except the barbell, as she was an athlete, too. She also explains that CrossFit has different levels. At the professional level, they work out for six to seven hours per day. It is divided into parts. First is the monostructural work for cardio which is swimming. The second is the strength portion that is going to the gym to do weightlifting. The third part is the skill portion that comprises gymnastics, pushups, handstands, and other basic exercises. Lastly, there is the accessory portion which is a little bit of bodybuilding. CrossFit is an all-around sport designed for every part of the body, and it depends on what level the person can handle.

About Bethany Shadburne:

Bethany Shadburne is a top women’s CrossFit competitor who placed 9th (individual) at the 2019 CrossFit Games, her best performance. Shadburne also finished 16th in 2018 and 22nd in 2017, so she’s no stranger to the sport.

But before she was a CrossFit athlete, Shadburne was involved in gymnastics, bodybuilding, triathlons, and other similar activities. Then, in 2015, she found her love in CrossFit by participating in local contests, and in 2016, things started to look promising for her. Then in 2017, she won two competitions, ended up top 20 in the world, and finished 22nd at the CrossFit Games.

Outline of the Episode:

[02:07] A general idea about the sport, CrossFit

[05:23] Bethany’s childhood back in Austin and how she got into gymnastics

[08:41] What it is like as a gymnast performing on the floor

Barton tells stories from his past as an Opera Singer, learning to "let go", and find his authentic voice. he asks the listener to think of times they too showed up big in important moments. Goal: How can we level up our performance in the things we seek to improve on by bringing our authentic self and finding joy.

Backstory about Barton:Barton lives in Austin, TX with his wife Valerie and their 7 year old son, Jack. Barton's been a personal trainer for 13 years.

Once back in the US, he applied for the Peace Corps so he could travel back to Africa and immerse himself in the culture and learn about their way of life.

10 year NFL safety Michael Griffin sits down with Barton to talk fatherhood, cupcakes, and his experience growing up playing football in Austin, TX.

Elite endurance athlete Chris Issendorf discusses the sport of ultra marathon canoe racing. Chris is among the best in the world when it comes to canoe racing. In this episode, he dives into his mindset as an endurance athlete before and during a race. He digs into how he carves up the 35 hour Missouri River 340 into little races to keep his edge.

About Ultra Marathon Canoe Racing

When it comes to canoe racing, endurance is everything. Chris explains that ultra marathon racing is a sport that lasts a minimum of eight to ten hours with some races lasting as many as hundred hours. A lot of training goes into building the mindset to keep going despite the pain and fatigue the body goes through. Chris gives Barton a description of what a typical canoe race looks like. Canoe racing can be anything from a single person to a six-man rig, using kayak paddles or double-blade canoe paddles. Some races start with the canoe on hand a quarter-mile away from the river and involve running, getting on the boat, and paddling. Some start on the water aboard the canoe. On average, a race can go for 35 to 40 hours nonstop for top teams, and the cutoff is at the 100th hour. Most people do not know that participants pack their food with them, and it takes strategy of when to take breaks in between. The sport is of the rigorous type that is not for the faint-hearted, but Chris is motivated despite the arduous work.

About Chris Issendorf:Born in New Jersey, Chris has always sought out tough challenges. As a young man, he worked on a fishing boat and learning the grueling skill of deep sea fishing, working long hours and pushing through days without sleep. He now lives in Dripping Springs, TX with his wife Shannon and his two children. His wife and oldest son Kyle both compete in ultra marathon canoe racing and Chris has a goal to race with his son in the Texas Water Safari in 2022. Chris runs a smal business installing brick pavers and chooses to live in the hill country outside of Austin). In his off-season, he runs trail races and recently in 2020 Chris won the Cactus Rose 50 mile Ultra Marathon with a time of 8:24:00, more than 30 min fast than the next competitor. He is not on social media by choice (sorry listeners!)

Outline of the Episode:

[01:47] A background of ultra marathon canoe racing

[06:45] The race that earned Chris first place and a record time

[13:16] How to stay focused and win a race that spans for hours and even days

[19:52] Take the lead, trust the preparation, and not make a mistake that will derail the finish

[24:15] Developed mind game to keep the body at the right spot

[29:00] Bathroom breaks in the middle of a race

[32:44] Preparation for the AuSable River Canoe Marathon amidst COVID-19

[36:52] Why Chris puts himself into a rigorous sport such as canoe racing

[45:09] Chris’ feeling when he and his partner crossed the finished line of the MR340 race

Adam and Barton chat about the similarities between performing arts and sports performance. Adam is a professional opera singer, having performed principal tenor roles. In this episode, he shares his mindset strategies around showing up before a performance which can also be applied to sports.

Surrounded by MusicAdam never imagined himself performing onstage, but his love for music speaks for itself. Having been exposed to operatic and classical music in his childhood years was the spark that later on lit his flame. Adam witnessed performances that blew his mind. Then, in high school, his friend forced him to audition for a jazz choir, and he got in. Adam majored in journalism in college, but his teachers were the ones that pushed him to shift to voice. All these influences mattered to Adam as he needed that extra push to reach his goal. His passion was already on full display, and all he needed to do was to look in the mirror to realize it.

Opera and SportsPerforming onstage may look different from playing sports, but Adam says these two are similar. Physical conditioning is the same context for both, only differing on how these are carried out depending on where the training is focused. There are also similarities when it comes to mindset. One example is to be prepared for any mistakes. When unavoidable circumstances affect performance, a singer knows how to adjust and improvise. That is the same as a player changing strategy to increase winning chances. Like sports, singers also do warm-ups. The concept is all the same, and execution is the only thing that distinguishes one from the other.

About Adam Flowers:Adam has performed principal tenor roles in opera houses throughout North America, Hawaii, and Japan. In July 2006, he completed a five-year artist-in-residency for Opera San Jose, performing over 32 roles. He has performed with the San Francisco Opera Chorus, San Francisco Symphony Chorus and is currently the tenor section leader at San Francisco’s St. Ignatius Church Choir. He is a teaching artist for Pacific Actors & Singers Workshop, the San Francisco Opera Guild’s Book To Bravo, and Opera A La Carte educational programs with students in the 5th-12th grades. Finally, Adam has written feature articles for San Francisco Opera’s production programs and the SF Opera Board of Directors quarterly newsletter Behind the Curtain.

Outline of the Episode:

[01:57] Adam’s discovery of singing

[09:58] How artistic and technical aspects in a performance matter

[13:10] The analogy of an operatic performance to sports performance

[18:09] Preparations and mindset before an opening night

[20:56] Teachers behind Adam’s success in his operatic career

[28:38] The moment when Adam had to figure out something mid-performance

[33:22] Advice from Adam’s friend that changed his mindset around performance

Mindful Performance Coach Taylor Brown explains how powerful the mind is at shaping athletic training, performance, and handling one's negative inner thoughts. Taylor is the founder and director of EnduroMind, a high-performance coaching program. In this episode, Taylor goes over his career as a rower and how he coaches Olympians on the mindset of performance. He also explains how to understand the stress and anxiety of the moment and have acceptance around it.

The Mind-Body Gap“Push to the limit” is a common phrase often used in training. But what happens when the mind tells what the body is not? Taylor explains that this is what he calls the “Mind-Body Gap.” When at a high-level effort, the mind will convince you that you have reached 100 percent when in reality, the body is only around 80 percent of its physiological limit. The gap lies in the 20 percent you can physically give. Therefore, understanding the body’s signals is a must to work with the body and not in opposition to it. Taylor expounds that when dealing with this gap, he asks himself whether he is physically capable of continuing despite the discomfort at the moment. Invariably, his answer is usually yes. He used his team’s race against Harvard as an example, where he gave his all at the last 30 seconds despite the fatigue.

About Taylor Brown:After a decade in high-performance sport, Taylor knows what holds many athletes back from realizing their true potential, and it’s not talent or intelligence. It is one’s relationship to their inner experiences like thoughts, emotions, and beliefs. Taylor seeks to empower athletes and coaches through building mindful awareness, acceptance, and aligning their actions with their values.

Taylor is a Certified Professional Coach and is trained in Mindful Sport Performance Enhancement. Taylor also produces a podcast, Mindful Sport Performance Podcast, with Drs. Keith Kaufman and Tim Pineau.

Taylor holds a B.A. in Psychology from Brown University, where he competed on the men’s D1 rowing team, placing top three nationally. Taylor earned an M.S. in Kinesiology @ UT - Austin.

Episode Outline:[02:49] The big moment from Taylor’s rowing career where team came together
[07:58] What happened in the last 30 seconds of Taylor’s rowing team going against Harvard
[10:46] Mind-Body Gap: when the mind thinks you are at peak level, but the body is not
[14:48] Taylor’s approach in coaching and the preparation mindset around it

3x Gold medalist Brendan Hansen digs in with host Barton about looking at the silver lining of failure. Brendan’s mindset of failure has been honed since he started swimming with the help of the coaches he had. Because of this, it became the fire that drove his desire to be the best. In this episode, Brendan shares why every failure is an opportunity to learn.

Failure Mentality

The summer before Brendan went to the University of Texas, he participated in the 2000 Olympic Trials. Landing first or second place would mean qualifying to the US Olympic Swimming Team. Brendan was confident and felt as if he was the number one breaststroker in the world. It was his first opportunity to swim at the international level. Unfortunately, despite doing everything right as his coach intended him to, Brendan failed to make it to the Olympic team. He finished third place in the 100m and 200m breaststroke. He brought that experience when he walked into the University of Texas and took to heart his mindset of failing his way to success. Brendan believes that surrounding himself with better people than him pushes up the intensity to excel. He had nine Olympians with him on the university team. It was a good thing for Brendan because seeing his college roommate win an Olympic gold medal also pushed him to succeed.

Episode Outline :

[01:40] Early moments of failure in Brendan’s career that honed his desire to be the best
