Dr Elena - That Therapist Chick: Recent Episodes

Elena Sherwood

You've done some very hard work, yet find yourself unable to relish the life you've worked so hard to build. This, unfortunately is the case for many of us. Why? It's because being alive and FEELING alive are two vastly different things, and intangibles get in the way. They don't have to. My goal in all I do, is to help you fall madly in love with how your life FEELS.

A quick conversation about being in survival mode, which can easily become an important mental health issue. It's a state of mind that's busy, where you're mentally in the past, worried about the future and not in the present, with overthinking about feeling SAFE. It can lead to loneliness, feeling isolated, and may come with depression symptoms.

Tips for dealing include:

1) Allow yourself to feel the feelings. Find the environment you need to do this, perhaps with a loved one or a health professional.

2) Use it to connect with others feeling the same way, and if you can't find a way out of it then use it to serve mankind.

3) Remember you are not alone.

If you're changing, I'm proud of you.

Don't let the uncomfortable scary, because sometimes the only thing that REALLY changes in our lives, is how we FEEL in it.

Humans are messy.

As we spend time handling, decluttering or avoiding it, let's keep in mind what REALLY matters. Please make sure you aren't editing yourself out of your own life.

Can self-love be quantified? Well, in this episode I suggest a quick tool that may, in fact, do just that. By observing ourselves, we get a better picture of how much (or little) there is of it in our daily lives. Enjoy!

We carry so much, without knowing we carry so much. We don't want to.

A good part of the time, what we carry is grief; unchecked, unnamed, and unacknowledged. We overlook that we can grieve things that will never be. It could be a life-plan, an estranged family member, all the things we deserve but won't be ours.

When we think about the usual grief of mourning the loss of a loved one, here are a few things to keep in mind. If grief comes at a time when we have no choice but to "park" it, we may fall into a long-term pattern of doing just that. That, prolonged, weighs us down.

My wish for you is that you acknowledge that you are at times grieving, and let it flow. Deal. Process. That is how we get to the other side of living our lives fully.

The first thing we need to remember is that other people's reactions or over-reactions are exactly that: other people's. Let's keep in mind what's ours to fix, and what is NOT. The question to ask ourselves would be, what drives us to make other people okay? Why do we feel the need to right every wrong? Why do we take on what belongs to others?

It's our responsibility to soothe ourselves.

When we take on that job for others, we are stopping them from learning to do this themselves.

We are to be kind and respectful, but let's keep in my where others end and where we begin, and vice versa.

We don't need concrete evidence of childhood trauma (alcoholism, physical abuse) to prove childhood neglect. Never doubt how you feel; if you have intense feelings, use those as your starting point for deep work. How we feel inside, especially about how we see ourselves can be changed.
