An informational podcast that explores the fascinating world of Eating Psychology, hosted by Counsellor and Coach; Cecily Bowditch. On this podcast we will take a deep dive into the complicated world of eating. You can expect to learn about how we have all been getting it so very wrong and how we can go about addressing these issues in order to improve our mental, physical and emotional health.
In this week’s episode I am going to discuss some of the reasons why you may be experiencing episodes of binge eating and then next week we will take a look at how you can start to move away from these exacerbating factors and start to make the binge eating episodes shorter, less frequent and eventually, hopefully non existent. As these podcast episodes are designed to be short and sweet, I’ve chosen to just focus on four factors that contribute towards binge eating today, however there are many many more potential things that may be affecting your personal relationship with food. I hope that by starting to discuss some of the common factors it can allow for more personal self awareness to grow and this may in turn enable you to develop more self awareness around your thoughts and behaviours.For more information about what I do, check out my website at;

I’m not sure that yo-yo dieting needs much of an introduction as a concept per se, it’s pretty self explanatory and chances are, if you’re partial to the odd diet then you will know exactly what I mean when I say ‘yo-yo dieting.’ There is a lot of commonly used language that can indicate a yo-yo dieting mentality, comments such as “I need to get back on the waggon” or “The diet starts tomorrow”, even things such as “I’m being good today” or “I’m having a day off but I’ll get back to it tomorrow.” What does this language have in common? Well, it all points towards an on or off mentality, in other words black and white thinking. This black and white thinking leaves no space for medium ground. You are either adhering to the rules that you have set for yourself, whether that’s a food rule, an exercise rule, or a bit of both, or you are throwing it all out of the window as you have decided that today, you are off the diet.

There are so many potentially contributing factors to unwanted eating behaviours such as; emotional eating, binge eating, overeating, food restriction and yo-yo dieting, and I think that often when people set out to try and unlearn these behaviours they miss addressing a key factor that is so often at play, and that is; a dysregulated nervous system.
I really think that you can do all of the amazing work in the world on areas such as; intuitive eating, behavioural change, core belief work, lifestyle changes and inner child work, but if you are still walking around with a dysregulated nervous system then you are more likely to struggle with compulsivity in times of stress and uncertainty, and it is this compulsivity that I believe prevents people from really moving forwards with their work on healing their relationship with food.

This week I would like to explore the very complicated conversation around weight loss in the context of unwanted eating behaviours. I want to start off by saying that this is a really tricky area because for many people who struggle with unwanted eating challenges such as; emotional eating, binge eating, overeating and chronic dieting, they will likely find that they have developed poor body image and this may or may not be connected to weight gain that has occurred as a result of the eating behaviours. The reason that I say this is so tricky is that for many of these eating behaviours they have actually occurred, at least partly because they have pursued weight loss, generally through a very restrictive diet or two.For more information about what I do, check out my website at;

When I think about all of the unwanted eating behaviours that people might come across and the best approaches for tackling them, there is one tool that I think is universally the most effective strategy, and that is the pursuit and practice of embodiment. Working towards becoming more embodied can be an incredibly effective tool for people who find themselves either; restricting food, yo-yo dieting, overeating, binge eating or emotional eating and it can be truly transformational for those people who have poor body image.For more information about what I do, check out my website at;

The concept of intuitive eating has been around for sometime now, but I have noticed that it is has really taken off over the last few years as an approach to fix unwanted and disordered eating behaviours such as binge eating and emotional eating, and so today I thought it might be useful to spend a little bit of time just looking at what the intuitive eating approach is.
