The guest for this episode is Professor Elanor Huntington, Executive Director for Digital, National Facilities & Collections at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation - CSIRO, Australia's national science agency.
We discuss the challenges of attracting a diverse cohort to take up STEM careers, and the need to focus on lateral career moves and life moves, as well as early interventions.
The recommendation is that the focus should not only be on filling the pipeline with new STEM talent, but also on finding ways to get back those who have already left the field. There are reviews already underway, and many people with ideas, but that the Australian government needs to carefully consider which interventions will have the greatest impact.
We also touch on the role of science communication and Australia's open science policies in advancing scientific research and the need for systemic interventions to address societal challenges such as climate change and the aging population. CSIRO Publishing is already committed to open access publishing and aims to make its content as widely available as possible.
CSIRO's 'missions' program is given as an example of a quantifiable, impactful approach to addressing these challenges.
Overall, this conversation highlights the challenges and opportunities facing STEM and science communication in Australia, and the need for systemic interventions to address these challenges.

The guest for this week’s INSPIRING STEM PODCAST episode, is Dr Alex Freeman. Alex is the Executive Director of the Winton Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication, a role she took up in 2016. She previously spent 16 years working for the BBC, primarily as a producer and director for BBC Science.

Last year, Cambridge University Press (CUP) announced the launch of a new concept in journals publishing – Research Directions. It’s stated that the approach would "speed discovery by fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing between subject communities" as well as provide "opportunities to publish research from areas not well served by traditional, discipline-specific journals".

Pharmaceutical companies, which fund approximately half of all biomedical research, are now leaders in the publication and disclosure of research. However, access to much company-funded research is still restricted by journal paywalls. Therefore, with open science continuing to rise in prominence and adoption by science funders and researchers, how can pharmaceutical companies play their part?

Our current definition of Open Science emphasizes collaboration and transparency for research and research-related publications and data. Making science truly “open” will see information about discoveries become freely available, under terms that enable re-use, redistribution and reproduction.
So, with Open Science continuing to rise in prominence and adoption by science funders and researchers, can we demonstrate the real-world impact?
