Boasting About Helping The Needy

1. Jeremiah 9:23 This is what the LORD says:“Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches.”2. The God ManCHRIST JESUS

Christ Jesus, is the only person of the trinity, that took human form, and endured what we humans endure, so he’s the only person of the trinity that knows: Hunger, Thirst, Pain, Suffering, Death, …

Feelings of sadness, tearfulness, emptiness or hopelessness

Loss of interest or pleasure in most or all normal activities, such as sex, hobbies or sports

Insomnia or sleeping too much

Tiredness and lack of energy, so even small tasks take extra effort

Changes in appetite —

Anxiety, agitation or restlessness

Slowed thinking, speaking or body movements

Feelings of worthlessness or guilt, fixating on past failures or blaming yourself for things that aren't your responsibility

Trouble thinking, concentrating, making decisions and remembering things

For many people with depression, symptoms usually are severe enough to cause noticeable problems in day-to-day activities, such as work, school, social activities or relationships with others.

Other people may feel generally miserable or unhappy without knowing why.

Children and teens may show depression by being irritable or cranky rather than sad.

Encourage treatmentPeople with depression may not recognize or acknowledge that they're depressed.

They may not be aware of signs and symptoms of depression, so they may think their feelings are normal.

All too often, people feel ashamed about their depression and mistakenly believe they should be able to overcome it with willpower alone.

But depression seldom gets better without treatment and may get worse.

With the right treatment approach, the person you care about can get better.

Here's what you can do to help:

Talk to the person

about what you've noticed and why you're concerned.

Explain that depression is a medical condition,

not a personal flaw or weakness — and that it usually gets better with treatment.

Types of Love

C. S. Lewis identified four types of love in the Bible in the Greek.Though sources such as Psychology Today identify seven types of Greek words for love, we’ll focus on the four most commonly identified.Storge

Might also be called affection or familial love.This word isn’t actually used in the Bible, but the concept is there.Storge is based on familiarity.

A person will love their family regardless of whether they are people the person would be drawn to otherwise; family members often have nothing in common except familiarity and blood.Storge is a comfortable affection that can be taken for granted, but it can also be very powerful.Eros

Eros is romantic love. Eros also isn’t a word that appears in the Bible, though it plays a major role in a lot of Old Testament problems.

Eros encompasses sexual and romantic love and is the root word of the English “erotic.”Lovers are often completely preoccupied with one another, filled with eros.Eros is often associated with sexual desire and lust, but it can also be a good thing in a marriage relationship when accompanied by and bolstering with other kinds of love.

PhiliaPhilia is friendship love.This word is used in the Bible.As C. S. The names of God, and their meaningsThroughout the Bible, people have given many names to or for God.

Sometimes they were given in response to something God had done, other times they were to describe who he is.

Let's take a look at some of the most popular names of God.

Most familiar use Jehovah, a variant of Yahweh, which is translated into English as LORD.

These are also names ascribed to our Lord:

Jehovah Jireh: The LORD our provider (Genesis 22:14)

Jehovah Rapha: The LORD our Healer (Exodus 15:26)

Jehovah Nissi: The LORD our Banner (Exodus 17:15)

Jehovah Shalom: The LORD our Peace (Judges 6:24)

Jehovah Raah: The LORD our Shepherd (Psalms 23:1)

Jehovah Tsidkenu: The LORD our Righteousness (Jeremiah 23:6)

Jehovah Shammah: The LORD is Here (Ezekiel 48:35)

Abba Father:

For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” (Romans 8:15).

Adonai:

Adonai is a Hebrew word that translates as "Lord" of "Lord Master" from its derivation "sovereignty".

In 1 Samuel 24:8, when David has the chance to take the life of the King of Israel, Saul, who is trying to kill him, and he chooses to spare Saul, he emerges from a cave he has been hiding and calls Saul, “My lord,” its root form in the Hebrew similar to Adonai.

Alpha and Omega:

In the last book of the Bible, Jesus reveals himself as "the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End."

Present at the world's beginning, Jesus will also be present at its end, when he and his work are finally and fully revealed.

"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End." Revelation 22:13

Ancient of Days:

God is referenced as the "Ancient of Days" three times in the book of Daniel, chapter 7.

It was the venerable appearance of old age that was uppermost in the writer's mind.

"What Daniel sees is not the eternal God Himself, but an aged man, in whose dignified and impressive form God reveals Himself

El Roi:

"The God who sees me" - used by Hagar in Genesis 16.

Elohim:

Elohim is the Hebrew word for God that appears in the very first sentence of the Bible.

Genesis 1:1 says, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."

It literally says, "In the beginning Elohim, Elohim created the heaven and the earth."

The term "Elohim" means “supreme one” or “mighty one”

El Elyon:

El Elyon, God Might High, or sometimes LORD Most High is used through Scripture to refer to the LORD, Creator of heaven and earth.

Psalm 57:2 says, “I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.”

Jesus:

On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived (Luke 2:21)

Friend of Sinners:

The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’

But wisdom is proved right by her deeds (Matthew 11:19).

An Exegesis on who is King Melchizedek

Genesis 14:18-20- ( NIV)

18 Then Melchizedek, king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High,

19 and he blessed Abram, saying,“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,Creator of heaven and earth.

20 And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand.” Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

** Why would Abram give Tithes of everything he had to Melchizedek? Cica: 2144 B.C.

Let us begin to examine his NAME and what His name Means in the Hebrew:

Melchiz’edek: King of Righteousness, King of Salem, and Priest of the most high God, who met Abram in the valley of Shaveh, which is the King’s valley, brought out bread and wine, blessed him, and received tithes from Abram.

Why would Abram tithes to Melchizedek, of everything that Aram owned ?

Three Men Visit Abraham - Genesis: 18- 1-5 ( NIV )

18 The Lord appeared to Abraham near the large trees of Mamre.

Abraham was sitting at the entrance to his tent.

It was the hottest time of the day.

2 Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby.

So he quickly left the entrance to his tent to greet them.

He bowed low to the ground.

3 He said, “My lord, if you are pleased with me, don’t pass me by.

4 Let me get you some water.

Then all of you can wash your feet and rest under this tree.

The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind:

“You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”

What is the Order of Melchizedek:

it is explained to be “manner,” likeness in official dignity, a King and Priest.

The relationship between Melchizedek and Christ as type and antitype is made in the epistle to the Hebrews to consist in the following particulars:

Each was a Priest

Not of the Levitical Tribe

Superior to Abraham

Whos beginnings and endings are unknown

Who is not only a Priest but also a King of Righteousness and Peace

Now, let's get into the Word Of God
In today’s Bible Study, we are going to study about the: 12 Apostles

Let us begin by defining the Title of Apostle:

( The Greek Word for Apostle, is: apostolos, “person sent”)

Apostle

In the New Testament originally was, the official name of those twelve of the disciples whom Jesus chose to send forth first to preach the gospel and to be with him during the course of his ministry on earth.

The word also appears to have been used in a non-official sense to designate a much wider circle of Christian messengers and teachers See (2 Corinthians 8:23; Philemon 2:25)

It is only those who were officially designated apostles that we treat in the article.

Their names are given in (Matthew 10:2-4) and Christ's charge to them in the rest of the chapter.

The office and qualifications of an Apostle

(1) The original qualification of an apostle, as stated by St. Peter on the occasion of electing a successor to the traitor Judas, was that he should have been personally acquainted with the whole ministerial course of our Lord from his baptism by John till the day when he was taken up into heaven.

(2) They were chosen by Christ himself
(3) They had the power of working miracles.

(4) They were inspired. (John 16:13)
(5) Their world seems to have been pre-eminently that of founding the churches

and upholding them by supernatural power specially bestowed for that purpose.

(6) The office ceased, as a matter of course, with its first holders-all continuation of it, from the very condition of its existence (cf. (1 Corinthians 9:1)), being impossible.

Early history and training

The apostles were from the lower ranks of life, simple and uneducated; some of them were related to Jesus according to the flesh; some had previously been disciples of John the Baptist.

Our Lord chose them early in his public career.

They seem to have been all on an equality, both during and after the ministry of Christ on earth.

Early in our Lord's ministry he sent them out two and two to preach repentance and to perform miracles in his name Matt 10; Luke 9.

They accompanied him in his journey, saw his wonderful works, heard his discourses addressed to the people, and made inquiries of him on religious matters.

They recognized him as the Christ of God, (Matthew 16:16; Luke 9:20) and described to him supernatural power (Luke 9:54) but in the recognition of the spiritual teaching and mission of Christ they made very low progress, held back as they were by weakness of apprehension and by national prejudices.

Even at the removal of our Lord from the earth they were yet weak in their knowledge, (Luke 24:21; John 16:12) though he had for so long been carefully preparing and instructing them.

The Doctrine of Soteriology

LET'S DEFINE THE DOCTRINE OF SOTERIOLOGY

The biblical doctrine of salvation is technically called soteriology.

Understood actively, salvation is the total work of God in bringing men from the state of sin to the state of glory through Jesus Christ, the God-man.

In the former state men are spiritually dead and subject to divine wrath; in the latter, they are under God’s grace and experiencing eternal life.

Understood passively, salvation is the total present and future enjoyment by true believers in Christ, of God’s self-giving through His Son.Of the many Hebrew words used to signify salvation, yasa (to save, help in distress, rescue, deliver, set free) appears most frequently in the Old TestamentThe word salvation in Greek is “soteria” and derived from 'sozo' and 'soter' which means “savior.”Soteria simply means savior saves.In biblical terms, soteria is the act of the savior (God) that made provision for deliverance, restoration, preservation and salvation for mankind.The Meaning and Scope of SalvationEven a casual look at the world quickly reveals man’s condition in sin and the awful plight in which this fallen condition has left him.

Furthermore, it is a condition against which mankind is completely helpless when left to his own human resources.

In spite of all man’s expectations of a new society in which he is able to bring about peace and prosperity, the world remains shattered and torn by the ravages of sin locally, nationally, and internationally.

The Bible speaks, however, of God’s gracious plan to provide a solution to man’s problem.

We call it salvation or soteriology.

Dr. Charles Caldwell Ryrie writes:

Soteriology, the doctrine of salvation, must be the grandest theme in the Scriptures. It embraces all of time as well as eternity past and future.

It relates in one way or another to all of mankind, without exception.

It even has ramifications in the sphere of the angels. It is the theme of both the Old and New Testaments.

It is personal, national, and cosmic.

And it centers on the greatest Person, our Lord Jesus Christ.

Is there a God?

Then why did HE let our sons Die ?

On the days when I missed my son the most, I was desperate to find something to comfort me.

I spent hours searching for things to make me feel better: TV shows, music, food, shopping, reading, anything.When I searched for scriptures, I rarely found bible verses that helped my spouse and I as grieving parents.After a lot of reading and studying the word, I finally made a list of 10 scriptures that I wrote down and stuck in a mason jar.Written by Caroline ( no last name given ), lost her son on her 39th week of pregnancy Joshua.Zachary's StorySeveral years ago, there was a vibrant young child, that was playing, I believe in the streets, but it had rained severely, and this young child ended up acquiring an infection called “Ameba,” which one acquires when dirty water, is inhaled and the virus attacks, the Brain of the person.I have often wondered about cases such as these one, where families and friends are praying and placing all of their faith in God, and the loved one dies, and it appears that their prayers were in vain, or that our Lord failed them.

After years of studying the bible and searching God's heart for answers, I believe that Zachary and Joshua, and other(s) were called home by God, because they wouldn't have been the same person(s), if they would've survived.Therefore God, in His mercies, alleviates further suffering from all parties affected, by calling home the person involved, because the person will have immediate peace, and restoration, and so that their families, and loved ones, can begin the healing process, that only time can sooth.From what I've read Zachary and Joshua’s families are both Christians, and they put their faith in our Lord, so at some point, they will all be reunited with Zachary and Joshua, and be perpetually in the presence of our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus.Yes, I agree that the sting of death will take time to Heal, but as Christians, we can have peace knowing that our loved one’s, are with our lord in heaven, where there's no suffering anymore.Jesus says this to all grieving parent(s) this day!

Romans 8:35-39 (NIV)

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?

Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

36 As it is written:

“For your sake we face death all day long;

we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

In today’s Bible Study, we are going to study:

Amazing Grace

What do you think of when you hear the expression “God’s grace”?

Do you think of God’s “unmerited favor” toward us?

Does, “for by grace are you saved,” come to mind?

Grace impacts every aspect of God’s dealing with humanity.

We experience God's grace because God is gracious.

In Exodus 34:6:

When God is showing himself to Moses, we read "The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness."

Gracious is used here as an adjective describing God.

It is one of his attributes.

Gracious, the Hebrew word channun, in its verb form, means to be considerate, to show favor.

That God is gracious would mean that he is favorably inclined toward us.

That he wants to show favor to us.

To do what is best for us.

God is gracious.

Graciousness is not something that he puts on and takes off depending on the situation.

He is always gracious.

He does not decide to show us grace.

Rather it is just who he is.

Because he is gracious he demonstrates grace in everything he does.

Grace Definition: God’s ActionGrace is the Hebrew word chanan or the Greek word charis, meaning “the state of kindness and favor toward someone, often with a focus on a benefit given to the object.” (Strong’s Greek 5485).

Grace is what God does because he is gracious.

Every action of God toward us involves his grace.

His creation, his providence, his conviction of the sinner, his gift of salvation, his equipping of the saints, and the future he has prepared for us.

All of this is due to God's grace.

How Do Grace, Love, and Mercy Relate?It is impossible to adequately discuss God's grace without also mentioning love and mercy.

These three attributes are closely related. And it is common to see them used together.

“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved” (Ephesians 2:4-5).

Because of his love, God, who is rich in mercy, saved us by his grace.

Where does love end and mercy start?

Or mercy end and grace begin?

I don't believe you can really draw a line between them.

They are not really three different attributes.

All three are simply different ways that we as humans see God.

God's Grace in Justice and Holiness

There is another set of attributes for God that might seem at odds with grace.

God is just, righteous, and holy.

These reflect God as a judge who rewards good behavior and punishes bad.

The “wrath of God” is an expression commonly used in connection with these attributes.

It almost seems like there are two faces of God.

One is a merciful, loving, and gracious God who cares deeply for his creation.

The other face is of a God who is a demanding perfectionist who will punish anyone who steps out of line.

Qualifications of A Church DeaconThe Deacon must be a faithful servant and blameless example to the church he is appointed to serve.His qualifications and responsibilities have roots originating from the disputes within the early church but are necessary and relevant for the growth and administration of our church today.Today's roles and responsibilities of the church Deacon vary widely and have morphed to meet both the spiritual and managerial needs of our modern churches.

The Need for Deacons in the ChurchActs 6:1 gives us the origin of the need for Deacons:

"And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were being neglected in the daily ministration."

A need for service to the widows was growing, and the murmurings were rooted in the thought the Hebrew widows were being favored in their allotment from the church.

Deacons originated from conflicts in the early church as the number of believers was steadily growing.

The qualifications of the Deacons stated below, are vital to the administration of these responsibilities.

Qualifications of Deacons in the ChurchBiblical qualifications for the appointment of the deacon are specified in Acts 6:3 as "men of honest report, full of The Holy Ghost and wisdom."

These qualifications lend their importance to the ministering of the needs of widows and attending to the secular affairs of the church.

The Choosing of the Seven - Acts 6:1-7

"In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food.

So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables.

Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom.

We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”

This proposal pleased the whole group.

They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism.

They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.

So the word of God spread.

The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith."

Qualifications for Deacons - 1 Timothy 3:8-13

"Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain.

They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.

And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless.

Stephen the Archdeacon

Seven Chosen to Serve

Etymology on the Title of Deacon:

Greek word: Diakonos #1249 ( A servant )

The name Stephen is Greek, and chapter 6 of Acts of the Apostles tells us that he was a Hellenist (a foreign-born Jew who spoke Greek).

He lived in Jerusalem and had become a Christian.

Stephen, the First Deacon

The Hellenist converts, who probably formed a minority in the early Christian community, complained that the care of their elderly widows was neglected by the Hebrew-speaking majority.

The Apostles presented the matter to the congregation and, pleading the press of responsibilities, instructed it to select seven deacons for this community service.

They were chosen and ordained, and Stephen, who became the best known of the seven, was recognized as a man with special gifts as an evangelist.

He engaged in religious discussions among the adherents of synagogues of Diaspora Jews in the capital.

Growth in the number of Jewish converts, including “many of the priests,” provoked a reaction.

He was summoned before the Sanhedrin, the supreme rabbinic court in Jerusalem, and charged with speaking against “this holy place and the law.”

The charge is very general; the report of his defense before the Sanhedrin is the primary resource for learning what Stephen stood for.

Acts 6: 1-15 ( NKJV)

6 Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution.

2 Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables.

3 Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business;

4 but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”

5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch,

6 whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them.

7 Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith.

Stephen Accused of Blasphemy

8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among the people.

9 Then there arose some from what is called the Synagogue of the Freedmen (Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and those from Cilicia and Asia), disputing with Stephen.

10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke.

11 Then they secretly induced men to say, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.”

Philip the evangelist

Etymology of the name Phillip:

Being translated from the Greek

( Lover of Horses )

is first mentioned in the account of the dispute between the Hebrew and Hellenistic disciples in Acts 6.

He is one of the deacons appointed to supervise the daily distribution of food and alms, and so to remove all suspicion of partiality.

The persecution of which Saul was the leader must have stopped the "daily ministrations" of the Church.

The teachers who had been most prominent were compelled to take flight, and Philip was among them.

It is noticeable that the city of Samaria, is the first scene of his activity.

Acts 8. He is the precursor of St. Paul in his work, as Stephen had been in his teaching.

The Gospel is for everyone, regardless of race, nation, gender, or background (Acts 8:5).

The scene which brings Philip and Simon the sorcerer into contact with each other, ( Acts 8:9-13 ) which the magician has to acknowledge a power over nature greater than his own, is interesting.

This step is followed by another.

On the road from Jerusalem to Gaza he meets the Ethiopian eunuch. ( Acts 8:26 ).

The History that follows is interesting as one of the few records in the New Testament of the process of individual conversion.

A brief sentence tells us that Philip continued his work as a preacher at Azotus (Ashdod) and among the other cities that had formerly belonged to the Philistines, and, following the coast-line, came to Caesarea.

Then for a long period--not less than eighteen or nineteen years--we lose sight of him.

The last glimpse of him in the New Testament is in the account of St. Paul's journey to Jerusalem.

It is to his house as to one well known to them, that St. Paul and his companions turn for shelter.

He has four daughters, who possess the gift of prophetic utterance and who apparently give themselves to the work of teaching instead of entering on the life of home.

( Acts 21:8 Acts 21:9) He is visited by the prophets and elders of Jerusalem.

One tradition places the scene of his death at Hierapolis in Phrygia.

According to another, he died as bishop of Tralles.

The house in which he and-his daughters had lived was pointed out to travelers, in the time of Jerome.

Qualifications of a deacon

Prochorus is mentioned only once in the New Testament (Acts 6:5) where he is named as one of the seven who were to minister with their hands, thus freeing the apostles to preach.

Because Prochorus is a Greek name, it may be conjectured that he was a Hellenistic Jew who had taken up more or less permanent residence in Jerusalem.

As such, he would be a sympathetic arbiter in the dispute that had arisen between the Greek and Hebrew-speaking Christians.

He is described as being “full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom” (Acts 6:3).

Etymology on the name Nicanor

Nicanor, was one of the seven deacons, being the Fourth, of the list, and named next after Stephen and Philip, Procorus, ( Acts 6:5 )

Nicanor, is mentioned in the (Acts 6:5)

where he is named as, the fourth, of the seven, who were to look after the needs of the Greek - speaking widows in the church in Jerusalem.

Timon the Deacon

Etymology on the name Timon:

Being translated from the Greek: ( “Honorable” )

Acts: 6:1-6

Timon was one of the original seven men chosen by the church in Jerusalem and consecrated by the apostles to have oversight of a more equitable distribution of the daily rations.

Timon was no doubt a Hellenistic, i.e. a Greek -speaking Jew, to judge by the greek character of his name.

Timon, shared with his associates in office a favorable reputation and is described as Spirit-filled and wise. ( Acts 6:5)

Qualifications to become a Deacon:

Acts 6:1-7

The persons chosen to serve tables must be duly qualified.

They must be filled with gifts and graces of the Holy Ghost, necessary to rightly managing this trust;

Men of Truth

Men that hated Covetousness

All who are employed in the service of the church, ought to be commended to the Divine grace by the prayers of the church.

They blessed them in the name of the Lord.

The word and grace of God are greatly magnified, when those are wrought upon it, who were least likely.

It is believed that later on in Timon’s life

That he was chosen bishop of the city of Bosra in Syria, where he led many to Christianity.

He was thrown into a red-hot furnace and received the crown of martyrdom; apparently his preaching brought about the (ire) of the local governor, who martyred him with fire.

He is also commemorated on July 28.

PARMENAS THE DEACON

Etymology on the name Parmenas

par'-me-nas (Parmenas):

A Greek name, an abbreviated form of Parmenides.

Parmenas was one of "the seven" chosen by the people and appointed by the apostles to superintend the daily distribution to the Christian poor of Jerusalem (Acts 6:5).

Tradition states that he was martyred at Philippi, in the reign of Trajan, but his name does not appear again in Scripture.

Parmenas Ministry and Martyrdom

He is believed to have preached the gospel in Asia Minor. Parmenas suffered martyrdom in 98, under the persecution of Trajan.

Christian tradition identifies him as the Bishop of Soli. Some take this to be Soli, Cyprus, while others interpret it as Soli, Cilicia.

When the church was still confined to Jerusalem, he became a convert and being a man of honest report full of the Holy Ghost and of wisdom, he was chosen by the whole multitude of the disciples to be one of the first seven deacons, and was ordained by the apostles.

The Apostle Barnabas

We’re familiar with the 12 apostles of Jesus in the Bible, as well as with Saul, later renamed Paul and responsible for writing most of the books in the New Testament.

But there are other great men and women of faith also mentioned throughout Scripture, and one of them, Barnabas, was highly influential when it came to sharing the gospel.

But who was Barnabas in the Bible, and what can we learn from him?

Who Is Barnabas in the Bible?

Most of what we know about Barnabas comes from the Book of Acts, which details his ministry both alongside Paul and in general as he traveled throughout Judea and Asia Minor spreading the Good News to all who would hear.

According to the New International Encyclopedia of Bible Characters, Barnabas was a Levite from Cyprus who led not only Jews but many Gentiles to the Christian faith.

Acts 11:24 identifies Barnabas as “a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith” who brought “a great number of people … to the Lord” (NIV).

Barnabas’s travels and ministry for Jesus are described throughout Acts, as well as mentioned in Galatians, 1 Corinthians, and Colossians.

We first see his name mentioned in Acts 4:36-37, where it describes how “Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means ‘son of encouragement’), sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.”

Indeed, this penchant for encouragement, support, and generosity would stay with him.

When he saw how Paul—then still known as Saul—had become a fervent follower of Christ, Barnabas took the then-unknown disciple under his wing and introduced him to the other apostles in Jerusalem.

These other apostles were afraid because of Saul/Paul’s past actions, but Barnabas vouched for him, and because of this, the new convert “stayed with them and moved about freely in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord” (Acts 9:28).

Later passages detail how Barnabas was doing the work of God in Antioch but decided to find Paul so the two could work together for the faith (Acts 11:22-25).

The church grew steadily under their leader-partnership, both in size and finances.

While the two later disagreed over a ministry colleague and parted ways, their efforts for Jesus netted tremendous results and helped spread the faith far and wide.

What Is Barnabas’ Background?

As a Levite, Barnabas would have been raised a Jew, most likely wealthy, and schooled in Hebrew in religious foundational instruction.

References in the Bible indicate he was a respected figure— in Acts 14:12, Barnabas was referred to as “Zeus” while his companion, Paul, who did most of the speaking, was called “Hermes.”

To the Ancient Greeks, Zeus was the lead god, considered the god of sky and thunder and ruler of all other gods and goddesses on Mount Olympus, so the reference to Barnabas as Zeus would have been an acknowledgment of his leadership and authority, and possibly also his age and stature.

Easton, in his Bible dictionary, noted Barnabas was born of Jewish parents of the tribe of Levi and probably educated as a Pharisee in the school of Gamaliel.

And, of course, it was on Barnabas’s introduction that Paul was first welcomed into the Jewish Christian apostolic sphere in Jerusalem upon Paul’s conversion.

Miami Police Arrest Quotas Circa 1990s

As a retired Miami Police Officer, I had to file suit against the Miami Police Department.

To stop Racially Targeted Discriminatory Arrest Quotas, that specifically, targeted Elderly Black African – Americans

All city of Miami Public Parks are open Sunrise to Sundown, City of Miami Ordinance: Chapter 38-50

Armed with the power of this ordinance, the city of Miami’s South District Deputy Commander a Captain of Police, in concert with the stations Major of Police, created an Arrest Quota, to bolster their statistics, with the hopes of getting the Major of Police promoted to Chief of Police, and the Captain to Deputy Police Chief, and all of the Sergeants, and Lieutenants would all be either promoted or be given “ Cushy Jobs,” in return for their cooperation and by leading their Police Officer(s) to generate more arrest(s), Tickets, etc ...

Our Lieutenant(s) and Sergeant(s) on the afternoon and midnight shift were the main players, because as the ordinance reads, all City of Miami Parks close after Sunset.

We were told that we were going to clean all parks, because of the drug dealings and other nefarious dealings taking place inside these parks.

We were to go in Mass-Deployments, just in case there was a need for backup, we had enough officers on the scene, to address the issue.

We were also armed with our “ Police Transport Vehicle,” aka the “ Patty-Wagon,” so we can mass arrest and load up the Patty Wagon,
and have the Police Officer(s) that drove the patty wagon be able to take all of the prisoner(s) straight to Jail, in Mass quantities.

While we moved to a different City of Miami Park, in the affluent area
of the City of Miami, along Bayshore Drive, named David T. Kennedy park.

This park was concregated by a mostly upscale crowd, that were predominantly White and Hispanic, professionals.

So at David T. Kennedy Park, we wouldn’t haul off people to Jail- unless they had a Warrant for their arrest.

But if you didn't have a warrant for your Arrest, you were issued a “ Will Appear” Arrest form, and you would go to court and pay a fine, and that was the end of story.

Getting stopped by the Police

In my research, I have found that there are some Cities and states are starting to ban police from pulling drivers over for low-level traffic infractions as a way to reduce racial profiling.

Last week, the City of Philadelphia became the first major U.S. city to pass such legislation when it banned police from issuing a traffic stop based on the following infractions:

Driving with a broken taillight

Not wearing a seatbelt

Driving with minor damage to a bumper

Driving with a registration that has been expired for less than two months

Relocating a license plate to another visible part of the vehicle

Obstruction of view (such as an air freshener placed on the rearview mirror)

“Being pulled over by police is what I would like to call a cultural norm.

We would purchase our cars based on the likelihood of being pulled over or not pulled over.

The amount of people you’d drive with would be predicated on this idea of not wanting to be pulled over.”

The legislation will not go into effect for another three months, but it continues a trend followed by other states and municipalities.

In August, the City of Minneapolis proposed adopting similar measures as part of its August 2022 budget proposal, and the state of Virginia did something similar in March, when it decreed law enforcement could no longer stop drivers for a non-illuminated license plate, broken brake lights or tinted windows.

“Their job, as public servants, is to try and reduce crime so on occasion they’ll pull people over in a traffic stop to get some probable cause to search the car,” said Stacey Hervey, a criminal justice professor at Metro State University.

An analysis of 14 years of traffic stops in North Carolina, conducted by the University of South Carolina,shows Black drivers are 63% more likely to be pulled over than their white counterparts,

and Black drivers are 115% more likely to be searched during that stop, even though data shows contraband, like illegal guns or drugs, are found more often when a white driver is searched.

Another study of 95 million traffic stops by Stanford University over five years concluded: “police stops and search decisions suffer from persistent racial bias.”

“Our past and how we were raised really does impact what

we do, and I think the more we realize that as a society, and in police departments, the better off we’re all going to be, and the better off police officers are going to be,” said Hervey.

The Judgments;

Past, Present, and Future

Introduction

A great deal of confusion exists with respect to the subject of God’s judgments and particularly regarding the final judgment.

It is the purpose of this study to cover all the major judgments (past, present, and future) that we find in Scripture to help resolve this confusion.

For instance, many do not understand that instead of one final judgment, the Bible teaches that there are a series of five to seven future judgments (depending on how they are categorized) that differ in respect to time, purpose, subjects, and circumstances.

Understanding these various judgments will give insight into God’s program, but the goal here is not just information.

God wants Christians to understand the truth of the judgments to both comfort and motivate them to godly living.

He wants those who have not trusted in Christ to understand the judgments that, this might motivate them to trust in Christ as their personal Savior because He bore the judgment for their sin in their place.

The Christian will not face the final judgment because Christ was judged for us, but all believers will face a judgment called the Judgment Seat of Christ, the nature of which will be covered in the material to follow.

Sin always has its consequences and the Doctrine of the Judgments calls our attention to both the reality and nature of the consequences of sin.

The details of this will be developed in a summarized fashion in the material that follows.

Though one’s primary focus might be on the future judgments, this study will also cover the judgments of the past and the present because they are related and form a part of the total picture revealed in Scripture.

The Past Judgments

The Judgment of Satan and the Fallen Angels

Examining the Judicial Judgment:

All Are Under Sin

Galatians 3:22:

But the Scripture has shut up all men under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

Romans 3:19:

Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, that every mouth may be closed, and all the world may become accountable to God;

Romans 5:12-15:

Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned—

13 for until the Law sin was in the world; but sin is not imputed when there is no law.

14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.

15 But the free gift is not like the transgression.

For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.

All of mankind without distinction are under the curse of sin and judged as sinful and separated from God apart from the saving grace of God in Christ.

All fall short of the glory of God—the immoral, moral, and religious:

Rom. 1:18-32:

God’s Wrath Against Sinful Humanity

18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness,

19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.

20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.

22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools

23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.

25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones.

Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

The Judgment of Christ for the Sin of the World

This takes on two aspects:

(1) Christ’s judgment for sin, dying in the place of the sinner, bearing his sin and judgment on the cross as the sinner’s substitute.

Isaiah 53:4-6:

Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted.

5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.

6 All of us like sheep have gone astray,

2 Corinthians 5:21:

He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

1 Peter 2:24:

and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.

Romans 3:24-26:

being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;

25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed;

26 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

Sin requires a penalty, the penalty of death as God’s holy judgment on sin.

Jesus Christ, the sinless and perfect Son of God, the only one who could qualify as our substitute, died to satisfy the demands of God’s absolute holiness.

Sin calls for judgment and the cross of Jesus Christ became that place of judgment. It was there Christ paid the penalty for the sin of the world

1 John 2:2:

(2) Christ’s Judgment Unto Sin’s Reign; the Judgment of the Believer’s Sin Nature

John 1:29:

John Testifies About Jesus

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

Not only did Christ die for our sin as the Lamb of God, but He died to break the reign of sin in the lives of those who put their trust in Him as their Savior.

This means that, through co-identification with Christ in His death on the cross, the believer’s sin nature was also judged, crucified, with Christ in His death so that its power has been broken or neutralized.

Though the death of Christ does not obliterate the presence of the sin nature and though it is still a powerful enemy, the believer’s union with Christ in His death provides

Romans 7:15-24:

15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.

The Present Judgments

The Self-Judgment of the Believer

An interesting and important passage to this study is Acts 24:15-16 because in this passage Paul implicitly made reference to two judgments which are closely related.

The text reads:

Acts 24:15-16:

having a hope in God, which these men cherish themselves, that there shall certainly be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked. 16 In view of this, I also do my best to maintain always a blameless conscience both before God and before men.

The resurrection of the just mentioned in verse 15 will be followed by the Judgment Seat of Christ or the Bema, the place and time when believers will be examined for rewards or their loss.

Knowing and having the hope of the resurrection and all that this means to the Christian, the Apostle spoke of his commitment to maintain a clear conscience, one cleared by confession and the forsaking of all known sin:

1 John 1:9:

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Prov. 28:13:

Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper,
but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.

He wanted to walk blamelessly, to keep short accounts with God, and to stay in close communion with the Lord lest he should become disqualified for rewards at the Bema:

1 Cor 3:10-15:

10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care.

11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.

12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw,

13 their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.

14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward.

15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.

1 Cor 9:24-27:

The Need for Self-Discipline

24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.

25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.

26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air.

27 No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

The Discipline Judgments of God

As seen in the above section dealing with self-judgment, the New Testament clearly teaches us that one of the ministries of our heavenly Father is the ministry of loving discipline.

God’s discipline is patterned after the principles of Proverbs 13:24 which read:

“He who spares his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him diligently.”

Discipline is evidence of love.

So we read in Hebrews:

Hebrews 12:4-11

You have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin;

5 and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons, “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, Nor faint when you are reproved by Him;

6 For those whom the Lord loves He disciplines, And He scourges every son whom He receives.”

7 It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline?

8 But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.

9 Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live?

10 For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, that we may share His holiness.

11 All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.

From this passage in Hebrews and others like 1 Corinthians 11:27-32, God disciplines His children for the following reasons:

(1) To bring a wayward child who refuses to judge himself back into fellowship (1 Cor. 11:31-32; Ps. 32:3-5).

(2) It is part of the training process by which God’s children are brought into the experience of God’s holiness (Heb. 12:10).

(3) It is an expression and a proof of God’s love (Heb. 12:6, 8).

(4) It is designed to produce obedience and to protect them against untimely physical death (Heb. 12:9; Rom. 8:13; 1 Cor. 11:30).

(5) It yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness (Heb. 12:11).

Defining God’s Grace

Defining God's Grace The Gospel of Grace has been preached for ages in most churches where it is declared, “by the Grace of God” or “only the Grace of God”. “We are now under Grace not under the law”. But what is Grace? Grace is not getting what we deserve for our actions which we deserve. We were all destined to die in our sins from birth but Christ took that judgment and died on our behalf to shield us from taking the penalty which we duly deserved. Does it mean that by Christ’s death we have automatically escaped the death penalty? By all means no, after believing and accepting Christ’s sacrificial death through faith, we must take advantage of the Grace period to begin a new life in the likeness of Christ towards purity, righteousness and holiness by the help of the Holy Spirit. I have observed that many Christians see the event of Salvation that is accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as our personal saviour to be the end. It is not an end but a beginning of a new life in Christ. My article is to remind fellow believers that the period of Grace to build up our faith to Christlikeness has an expiration period after which comes the judgment. When we forget that the Grace of God expires, we falsely continue in our lives of sin or doing the same old things over and over again expecting that we would be covered by Grace. We tend to take advantage of the Grace of God and abuse it and do not work on our character of purity, holiness and righteousness looking more like Christ. Paul mentioned exactly what the purpose of Grace was in Romans 2: when he stated that it is supposed to lead us to repentance. “Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? 5 But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed. 6 He will render to each one according to his works: 7 to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; 8 but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. 9 There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, 10 but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. 11 For God shows no partiality.” Paul is entreating believers to take advantage of God’s Grace of Salvation to repent fully and wholly from our sinful ways and obey the truths of God that have been provided to us through our faith in Jesus. When we come to the faith of Christ, we are to seek all truths there is in the bible and hold onto it steadfastly with our lives. God’s Grace is his kindness and forbearance and patience that has delayed judgment to us so we can repent and turn to him. Loving God with all our hearts, mind, soul and strength and loving our neighbors as ourselves.

THE NAME(S) AND MEANING OF HELL

The Hebrew word is Sheol, which signifies the unseen state:

Isaiah 5:14; 14:9,15; 28:15-18; 57:9 to list a few.

The Greek word Gehena is translated “hell” in the following scriptures:

Matt. 5:22,29,30; 10:28; 18:9; 23:15,33; Mark 9:43;45,47; Luke 12:5; Jas.3:6.

The Greek text which signifies the unseen world, is found in the following Scriptures:

Matt.11:23; 16:18; Luke 10:15; 16:23; Acts 2:27,31; Rev. 1:18; 6:8; 20:13, 14.

THE ORIGINAL INHABITANTS OF HELL

(1) Hell was designed originally for Satan and his demons (Matthew 25:41; Revelation 20:10).

(2) Hell will also punish the sin of those who reject Christ (Matthew 13:41,50; Revelation 20:11-15; 21:8).

(3) Hell is conscious torment.

Matthew 13:50 “furnace of fire…weeping and gnashing of teeth”

Mark 9:48 “where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched”

Revelation 14:10 “he will be tormented with fire and brimstone”

(4) Hell is eternal and irreversible.

Revelation 14:11 “the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever and they have no rest day and night”

Revelation 20:14 “This is the second death, the lake of fire”

Revelation 20:15 “If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire”

THE CURRENT RESIDENTS OF HELL

Jude 6: The angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

Jude 7: Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of the eternal fire.

Mark 9:48: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

Rev.14:11: The smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever and they have no rest day or night.

Human Judgment of Others

Generally speaking, the principle is stated in Matthew 7:1-5.

Do not judge lest you be judged.

2 For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.

3 And why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?

4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and behold, the log is in your own eye?

5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own

eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.

We are not to judge others in the sense of condemning them or passing judgment on the opinions of others on doubtful matters as discussed in Romans 14.

Romans 14:1-5

Now accept the one who is weak in faith, but not for the purpose of passing judgment on his opinions.

2 One man has faith that he may eat all things, but he who is weak eats vegetables only.

3 Let not him who eats regard with contempt him who does not eat, and let not him who does not eat judge him who eats, for God has accepted him.

4 Who are you to judge the servant of another? To his own master he stands or falls; and stand he will, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

5 One man regards one day above another, another regards every day alike. Let each man be fully convinced in his own mind.

However, Scripture does call us to show what we might call critical discernment on certain matters.

For instance, Matthew 7 which tells us not to judge, is immediately followed with the command, “Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces” (Matt. 7:6).

How do we know who falls into the category of swine, those incapable of appreciating the truth, if we do not make certain judgments?

Furthermore, we are called upon to make judgments in the sense of evaluations when it comes to selecting elders and deacons, or in dealing with those who have fallen into sin:

1 Tim. 3:1-13

Tit. 1:9-16

Gal. 6:1-5

2 Thessa. 3:6-15).

1 Tim. 3:1-13:

3 Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task.

2 Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,

3 not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.

4 He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full respect.

5 (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?)

According to the American Psychiatric Association, their definition of Depression, is a follows:

The daily attacks from Satan our Adversary:

Satan or the Devil; his names both mean that he’s our adversary, that he is antithetical to everything for which Jesus Stands for ….his main purpose is to to keep you down, to make you feel ashamed of yourself, to condemn you, to place doubt daily in you, that you are worthless, that No-One loves you, that No-one is going to want to help you, that Jesus doesn’t love or acre about you ….

And his main mission is: To Keep You Away from Christ!

The Future Judgments

The Judgment of the Bema (The Judgment Seat of Christ)

The next prophetic event in God’s timetable will be the rapture or the catching up of the body of Christ, the church, as described in:

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18:

Believers Who Have Died

13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.

14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.

15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.

16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.

And so we will be with the Lord forever.

18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.

A number of things occur at this time.

There is the glorification of living believers in glorified bodies, the resurrection of those believers who have died in the Lord also in glorified bodies, and the translation of both to meet the Lord in the air.

This will be followed by their examination before the Judgment Seat of Christ.

This is not the final judgment mentioned in:

Revelation 20:11-15:

The Judgment of the Dead

11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them.

12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened.

Another book was opened, which is the book of life.

The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.

13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done.

14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire.

The lake of fire is the second death.

15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

This event is limited to only the unbelieving world.

Rather, the Judgment Seat of Christ is for the body of Christ, the church.

A similar judgment will occur for resurrected Old Testament and Tribulation saints, but probably not until after the Tribulation

Threefold Hallelujah Over Babylon’s Fall

After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude in heaven shouting:

Salvation and glory and power belong to our God,

for true and just are his judgments.

He has condemned the great prostitute

who corrupted the earth by her adulteries.

He has avenged on her the blood of his servants.”

3 And again they shouted:

“Hallelujah!

The smoke from her goes up for ever and ever.”

4 The twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God, who was seated on the throne.

And they cried:

“Amen, Hallelujah!”

5 Then a voice came from the throne, saying:

“Praise our God,

(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God’s holy people.)

“These are the true words of God.”

10 At this I fell at his feet to worship him.

But he said to me, “Don’t do that!

I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers and sisters who hold to the testimony of Jesus.

Worship God!

“ For it is the Spirit of prophecy who bears testimony to Jesus.”

The Heavenly Warrior Defeats the Beast

11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True.

With justice he judges and wages war.

The Judgment and Reward of

Resurrected Old Testament and Tribulation Saints

While many would place the resurrection and reward of Old Testament saints with that of the church at the rapture, a number of factors favor this at the conclusion of the tribulation at the same time as the resurrection and reward of tribulation saints mentioned in:

Revelation 20:4

4 I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge.

And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony about Jesus and because of the word of God.

They had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands.

They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

Daniel, who wrote concerning the termination of God’s program for Israel in chapter 9, places the resurrection of the righteous in Israel as occurring after “a time of distress such as never occurred ...”

Clearly this is the Tribulation,

Daniel’s Seventieth Week, or “the time of Jacob’s Distress” mentioned by:

Jer. 30:7

How awful that day will be!

No other will be like it.

It will be a time of trouble for Jacob, but he will be saved out of it.

Dan. 9:27

27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’

In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering.

And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.

Resurrection is viewed in Scripture as an event that terminates one program and initiates another, and one would not expect Israel’s resurrection could come until God had finished the seventy years decreed for His people, the Jews, according to

Daniel 9:24-27

24 “Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place.

25 “Know and understand this:

From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’

It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble.

26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing.

The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary.

The Judgment of Living Israel

The Time of This Judgment

The Scripture teaches that before Messiah can begin to reign, there must be a judgment to determine who will enter into Messiah’s kingdom since “they are not all Israel (spiritually regenerated believers who put their trust in Jesus Christ as their Messiah) who are Israel (physical descendants only)”

Rom. 9:6 (NIV)

God’s Sovereign Choice

6 It is not as though God’s word had failed.

For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel.

The rebels of unbelief must be removed so that only believing Israel will enter into the kingdom:

Ezek. 20:34-38 (NIV)

34 I will bring you from the nations and gather you from the countries where you have been scattered—with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm and with outpoured wrath.

35 I will bring you into the wilderness of the nations and there, face to face, I will execute judgment upon you.

36 As I judged your ancestors in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so I will judge you, declares the Sovereign Lord.

37 I will take note of you as you pass under my rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant.

38 I will purge you of those who revolt and rebel against me.

Although I will bring them out of the land where they are living, yet they will not enter the land of Israel.

Then you will know that I am the Lord.

Matthew 24-25 (NIV) set the chronology and thus the time.

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times

24 Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings.

2 “Do you see all these things?” he asked.

“Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”

3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately.

“Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

4 Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you.

5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many.

6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed.

Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.

7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.

There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.

8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.

9 “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.

10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other,

11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.

12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,

13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.

14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

Cancel Culture Yesterday and Today

What does it mean to cancel someone? To cancel someone is to stop supporting them or their work. This means no longer reading what they write, listening to or watching what they create, or enjoying what they produce. ( Merriam Webster Dictionary )

The Original Cancel Culture

The bible records two groups, that foster the beliefs and the social morey's of today’s cancel culture:

The Pharisees:

In Jesus’ day, the Pharisees were the most respected and influential group in Judaism.

Having originated about 135 B.C.,they were a committed fellowship of men, determined to follow in exact detail everything required in the Mosaic Law.

“Pharisees ” means

Pharisees : a religious party or school among the Jews at the time of Christ, so called from perishin , the Aramaic form of the Hebrew word perushim , "separated."

The chief sects among the Jews were the Pharisees, the Sadducees and the Essenes, who may be described respectively as the Formalists, the Freethinkers and the Puritans.

A knowledge of the opinions and practices of the Pharisees at the time of Christ is of great importance for entering deeply into the genius of the Christian religion. A cursory perusal of the Gospels is sufficient to show that Christ's teaching was in some respects thoroughly antagonistic to theirs.

He denounced them in the bitterest language; see (Matthew 15:7,8; 23:5,13,14,15,23; Mark 7:6; Luke 11:42-44) and compare (Mark 7:1-5; 11:29; 12:19,20; Luke 6:28,37-42)

To understand the Pharisees is by contrast an aid toward understanding the spirit of uncorrupted Christianity.

The fundamental principle all of the of the Pharisees, common to them with all orthodox modern Jews, is that by the side of the written law regarded as a summary of the principles and general laws of the Hebrew people there was on oral law to complete and to explain the written law, given to Moses on Mount Sinai and transmitted by him by word of mouth.

The first portion of the Talmud, called the Mishna or "second law," contains this oral law. It is a digest of the Jewish traditions and a compendium of the whole ritual law, and it came at length to be esteemed far above the sacred text.

While it was the aim of Jesus to call men to the law of God itself as the supreme guide of life, the Pharisees, upon the Pretense of maintaining it intact, multiplied minute precepts and distinctions to such an extent that the whole life of the Israelite was hemmed in and burdened on every side by instructions so numerous and trifling that the law was almost if not wholly lost sight of.

These "traditions" as they were called, had long been gradually accumulating.

Of the trifling character of these regulations innumerable instances are to be found in the Mishna.

Just as He judged the Jews still alive at the end of the Tribulation when Christ personally returns to earth, so He will also judge those Gentiles who remain:

The Sheep and the Goats

31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink,

43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

At the judgment of the Gentiles Christ will separate the sheep, representing the saved, from the goats, representing the lost , as we just studied in, Matt. 24:31-46.

Though salvation is by grace and through faith, the saved who come out of the Great Tribulation will be identified by their works in befriending their Jewish brothers.

In the universal anti-Semitism of the Great Tribulation one who befriends Jews will by this evidence manifest his salvation.

The Judgment of the Great White Throne - Part 1

Revelation 20:11-15 (NIV)

The Judgment of the Dead

11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it.

The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them.

12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened.

Another book was opened, which is the book of life.

The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.

13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done.

14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death.

15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

This vision of the Great White Throne describes the last and final judgment of history.

It is an awesome and solemn scene and one which should cause everyone to stop and think about the eternal implications of this future event.

For the non-Christian, the one who has never trusted in the person and work of Jesus Christ, it should cause him to want to search out the truth regarding Jesus Christ, to embrace Him in faith as the Savior from his sin and eternal doom.

For the Christian, the future reality of this event should cause deep concern because of the many (including some of our friends and relatives) who will face this throne of judgment because they never received the Savior by faith.

All who have scoffed at God, denied His being, rebelled at His rule, or rejected His sovereignty and in the process, also rejected His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ must at this time stand before this throne to be condemned to eternal judgment.

May the reality of this judgment cause us to carefully reflect on the serious consequences of this passage on a Christ-rejecting world.

The Time of This Judgment

Revelation 20:5:

5 (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.)

This is the first resurrection.

Revelation 11-15:

Friends these are too many chapters to include in our studies, but I encourage you to delve into these chapters, in your devotional time!

These aforementioned chapters, show this takes place after the conclusion of the millennium following the doom of Satan and the destruction of heaven and earth, but before the eternal state of the new heavens and earth of :

The Place of This Judgment

Heaven and earth are seen fleeing from the face of Him who sits on this throne:

Rev. 20:11 (NIV)

The Judgment of the Dead

11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it.

The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them.

In other words, they are destroyed, dissolved:

2 Pet. 3:7, 10-12 (NIV)

7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.

The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.

11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be?

You ought to live holy and godly lives

12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.

That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.

The point is the Great White Throne Judgment does not occur on earth or in heaven as we know it, but somewhere beyond, perhaps in extreme outer space.

This indication is also clear that it does occur in the new heavens and earth which are not created until after this event -

The Judgment of the Dead

11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them.

Rev. 21:1: (NIV)

A New Heaven and a New Earth

21 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,”[a] for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.

In other words, God has removed Satan and his demons, the False Prophet and the Beast, and is about to judge the rest of the unbelieving dead.

So, it is only fitting that He also judges the old earth and heavens that has been the arena of Satan’s activity and man’s sin and rebellion.

This evidently takes place after the resurrection of the unbelieving dead from the grave and Hades.

They are resurrected, gathered before the throne and actually behold the dissolution of heaven and earth as a foreboding preparation for their judgment.

The Scroll and the Lamb

3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it.

4 I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside.

5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed.

He is able to open the scroll and it's seven seals.”

6 Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders.

The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.

7 He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne.

8 And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb.

Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people.

9 And they sang a new song, saying:

“You are worthy to take the scroll

and to open its seals,

because you were slain,

and with your blood you purchased for God

persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.

You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God,

and they will reign on the earth.”

11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand.

The Battle Against Depression

According to the American Psychiatric Association, their definition of Depression, is a follows:

Depression symptoms can vary from mild to severe and can include:

Feeling sad or having a depressed mood
Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
Changes in appetite — weight loss or gain unrelated to dieting
Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much
Loss of energy or increased fatigue
Increase in purposeless physical activity (e.g., inability to sit still, pacing, handwringing) or slowed movements or speech (these actions must be severe enough to be observable by others)
Feeling worthless or guilty
Difficulty thinking, concentrating or making decisions
Thoughts of death or suicide

The Judgements Series - Part XV

The Books:

The identity of the books is not specifically revealed and we can only speculate from a comparison of other passages of Scripture and from the nature of these verses.

I believe we have two books here.

The first book opened will probably be the Scripture, the Word of God, which contains the revelation of God’s holy character, the moral law, the declaration of man’s sinfulness, and God’s plan of salvation through faith in Christ.

This book also reveals that even when men do not have the written Word, they have the law of God written in their hearts, and the revelation of God-consciousness in creation so that they are without excuse:

Rom. 2:14-16 (NIV)

14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law.

15 They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.)

16 This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.

Rom. 1:18-21 (NIV)

God’s Wrath Against Sinful Humanity

18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness,

19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.

Rom. 2:12 (NIV)

12 All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law.

Undoubtedly, then, the Scripture will be used to demonstrate the clearness of the plan of God and that man is without excuse.

John 12:48 (NIV): is very pertinent here:

He who rejects Me, and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day.

The second book will be the book of works or deeds.

Verses 13 and 14 state that the unbelieving dead will be judged according to their deeds (works).

John 12:13-14 (NIV)

Undoubtedly then, one book is the book of works which contains a record of every person’s deeds as a witness of the true nature of their spiritual condition.

“Deeds” is the Greek word, ergon, which refers to anything that is done, “a deed, action, or work.”

It is used of good deeds:

Matt. 26:10 (NIV)

10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them,

“Why are you bothering this woman?

She has done a beautiful thing to me.

Mark 14:6 (NIV)

6 “Leave her alone,” said Jesus.

“Why are you bothering her?

She has done a beautiful thing to me.

The Problem of the Futility of Man’s Works

Scripture also teaches us that no amount of human goodness or human works or human morality or religious activity can gain acceptance with God or get anyone into heaven.

The moral man, the religious man, and the immoral and non-religious are all in the same boat—they all fall short of the glory of God (God’s perfect righteousness).

After discussing the immoral man, the moral man, and the religious man in:

Romans 1:18 (NIV)

God’s Wrath Against Sinful Humanity

18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness,

Romans 3:8 (NIV)

8 Why not say—as some slanderously claim that we say—

“Let us do evil that good may result”?

Their condemnation is just!

the Apostle Paul declares “that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin,” that “there is none righteous, not even one,” and “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God”

Rom. 3:9-10 (NIV)

No One Is Righteous

9 What shall we conclude then?

Do we have any advantage?

Not at all!

For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin.

10 As it is written:

“There is no one righteous, not even one;

23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Added to this are the declarations of the following verses of Scripture:

Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV)

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

Titus 3:5-7 (NIV)

5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.

He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,

6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior,

7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.

Romans 4:1-5 (NIV)

Abraham Justified by Faith

4 What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, discovered in this matter?

2 If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about—but not before God.

3 What does Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”

4 Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift but as an obligation.

5 However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness.

No amount of human goodness is as good as God.

God is perfect righteousness.

An Introduction to the Gospel

As the Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep, Jesus said, “I have come that they (all mankind) may have life, and have it abundantly,” a life with meaning and purpose.

The Bible teaches us that God loves all people and wants to bring them into a harmonious relationship with Himself.

But man is separated from God by the problem of Sin. God has resolved that problem through the person of Jesus Christ.

The following is a short presentation of the good news of how God has provided that men might know Him and experience eternal life.

God’s Plan of Salvation

While 1 John 5:11 and 12 are written to Christians to give them assurance of their salvation based on the testimony of God’s Word, this passage also highlights the key issue in God’s plan of salvation as it is centered in the person of Jesus Christ.

1 John 5:11-12 (NIV)

11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

God’s Declaration to Man:

“And the witness is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son” (verse 11).

The Important Issue:

“He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life” (verse 12).

This passage also teaches:

that God has given us eternal life and this life is in His Son, Jesus Christ, and
that the way to possess eternal life is to possess God’s Son.

Two important questions must be asked and answered:

Why is possession of God’s Son necessary to have eternal life?

How can a person possess or have the Son of God?

The Problem of Man’s Separation From God According to:

Romans 5:8 (NIV)

8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

God demonstrated His love for us through the death of His Son.

Why did Christ have to die for us?

Because Scripture declares all men to be sinful.

We are all sinners.

“To sin” means to miss the mark.

The Bible declares, “we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory (the perfect holiness) of God.”

In other words, our sin separates us from God who is perfect holiness (righteousness and justice) and who must therefore judge sinful man:

23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

The Judgment or Punishment

Revelation 20:14 (NIV)

14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire.

The lake of fire is the second death.“Death” refers to the body now resurrected while “Hades” refers to the soul, the immaterial part of man.

Both body and soul are eternally separated from God in the eternal Lake of Fire, a very real, literal, and eternal place according the Scripture.

Let us take a tour of Hades and it’s inhabitants:

Luke 16:23 (NIV)

Hades is the place where the wicked dead reside and are punished.

In the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, the rich man experiences torment in Hades.

This is the intermediate state, for the bodily resurrection and the final judgment are still future.

Jesus' point is that Hades foreshadows the rich man's final judgment.

Similarly, Lazarus rests at Abraham's side, connoting the joyous abode of the righteous dead.

The inhabitants of Hades:

Jude 6 (NIV)

6 And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling-these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.

7 In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.

The “ Special Supernatural insects found in Hades;”

Mark 9:44(A)-48 (NIV)

[44 A]

45 And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off.

It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.

[46] [b]

47 And if your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,

48 where

“‘the worms that eat them do not die,

and the fire is not quenched.’[c]

It is so important to note the emphasis here.

The real issue is whether one’s name is in the Book of Life, not one’s deeds.

The deeds of the unbeliever are only examined to show that the person, no matter how much good they have done, falls short of God’s holy demands.

Paul shows us in Romans that all categories of people—the good, the bad, and the ugly—are really in the same boat and on their way to eternal separation from God.

Obviously, most see that the immoral person deserves the wrath of God, as the Apostle describes in:

Romans 1:18-32 (NIV)

The Judgement Series Part XX of XXI

The Judgment Seat (Bema) of Christ

The Doctrine of Rewards

One of the prominent doctrines of the New Testament is the Doctrine of Rewards and the Judgment Seat of Christ.

It is a doctrine often ignored or, when taught, it is misrepresented because of the term “judgment” that is used in translating the Greek text.

Commenting on this Samuel Hoyt writes:

Within the church today there exists considerable confusion and debate regarding the exact nature of the examination at the judgment seat of Christ.

The expression “the judgment seat of Christ” in the English Bible has tended to cause some to draw the wrong conclusion about the nature and purpose of this evaluation.

A common misconception which arises from this English translation is that God will mete out a just retribution for sins in the believer’s life, and some measure of retributive punishment for sins will result.

As it will be shown below, though it is tremendously serious with eternal ramifications, the judgment seat of Christ is not a place and time when the Lord will mete out punishment for sins committed by the child of God.

Rather, it is a place where rewards will be given or lost depending on how one has used his or her life for the Lord.

In: 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20 (NIV)

19 For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you?

20 Indeed, you are our glory and joy.

So, we see that based on the aforementioned scripture, that the Apostle Paul drew courage and was motivated by the fact of rewards at the return of the Lord for the church which he mentions in every chapter in this epistle and becomes the primary subject of 2 Thessalonians.

The Lord’s return and what this means not only to the world but to us individually is a very prominent subject of the New Testament.

It is significant that among the final words of Revelation, the last book of the Bible, we find these words of the Lord:

Rev. 22:12 (NIV)

Epilogue: Invitation and Warning

12 “Look, I am coming soon!

My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done.

While salvation is a gift, there are rewards given for faithfulness in the Christian life and loss of rewards for unfaithfulness.

Rewards become one of the great motives of the Christian’s life or should.

But we need to understand the nature of these rewards to understand the nature of the motivation.

God’s Solution for Man’s Problem

God is not only perfect holiness (whose holy character we can never attain on our own or by our works of righteousness) but He is also perfect love and full of grace and mercy.

Because of His love, grace and mercy He has not left us without hope and a solution.

Romans 5:8 (NIV)

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were sinners, Christ died for us.

This is the good news of the Bible, the message of the gospel.

It’s the message of the gift of God’s own Son who became man (the God-man), lived a sinless life, died on the cross for our sin, and was raised from the grave proving both the fact He is God’s Son and the value of His death for us as our substitute -

Rom. 1:4 (NIV)

4 and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead:

Jesus Christ our Lord

Rom. 4:25 (NIV)

25 He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.

2 Corinthians 5:21 (NIV)

21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

1 Peter 3:18 (NIV)

18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.

He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit.

The All-Important Question

How then do we receive God’s Son that we may have the eternal life God has promised us?

What becomes the issue for us today?

John 1:12 (NIV)

12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God

John 3:16-18 (NIV)

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

Because of what Jesus Christ accomplished for us on the cross, the Bible states that “He that has the Son has life” and we can receive the Son, Jesus Christ, as our Savior by personal faith, by trusting in the person of Christ and His death for our sins.

This means we must each come to God the same way—as a sinner who recognizes his sinfulness, repudiates any form of human works for salvation, and relies totally on Christ alone by faith alone for our salvation.

As a child of God, you are, however, a babe in Christ and you need to grow and be spiritually nourished and built up in the things of Christ.

The Judgements Series Part XXI of XXXI

The Meaning of the Judgment (Bema) Seat

Both Romans 14:10 and 2 Corinthians 5:9 speak of the

“judgment seat.”

Rom 14:10 (NIV)

You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister?

Or why do you treat them with contempt?

For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.

2 Cor 5:9 (NIV)

So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it.

This a translation of one Greek word, the word bema.

While bema is used in the gospels and Acts of the raised platform where a Roman magistrate or ruler sat to make decisions and pass sentence:

Matt. 27:19 (NIV)

While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.”

John 19:13 (NIV)

When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha).

It’s use in the epistles by Paul, because of his many allusions to the Greek athletic contests, is more in keeping with its original use among the Greeks.

This word was taken from Isthmian games where the contestants would compete for the prize under the careful scrutiny of judges who would make sure that every rule of the contest was obeyed:

2 Tim. 2:5 (NIV)

Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules.

The victor of a given event who participated according to the rules was led by the judge to the platform called the Bema.

There the laurel wreath was placed on his head as a symbol of victory:

1Cor. 9:24-25 (NIV)

The Need for Self-Discipline

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.

25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.

In all of these passages, “Paul was picturing the believer as a competitor in a spiritual contest.

As the victorious Grecian athlete appeared before the Bema to receive his perishable award, so the Christian will appear before Christ’s Bema to receive his imperishable award.

The Time of the Bema

This event will occur immediately following the rapture or resurrection of the church after it is caught up to be with the Lord in the air as described in:

1Thessalonians 4:13-18 (NIV)

Believers Who Have Died

13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.

14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.

15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.

16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.

18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.

Arguments in support of this view:

In Luke 14:12-14 (NIV)

12 Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid.

13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,

14 and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

reward is associated with the resurrection and the rapture is when the church is resurrected.

In Revelation 19:8 (NIV)

Fine linen, bright and clean,

was given her to wear.”

(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God’s holy people.)

when the Lord returns with His bride at the end of the tribulation, she is seen already rewarded.

Her reward is described as fine linen, the righteous acts of the saints undoubtedly the result of rewards.

As we also find in:

2 Timothy 4:8 (NIV)

8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

1 Corinthians 4:5 (NIV)

5 Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes.

He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart.

At that time each will receive their praise from God.

We Find that rewards are associated with “that day” and with the Lord’s coming.

Again, for the church this means the event of :

This is none other than the Lord Jesus who is even now examining our lives and will bring to light the true nature of our walk and works when we stand before Him at the Bema:

The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place.

He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, 2 who testifies to everything he saw—that is, the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes.

He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart.

At that time each will receive their praise from God.

God’s Children and Sin

the Apostle called this examining time the Bema of God while in

The Point: Jesus who is God is our examiner and rewarder.

The Purpose and Basis of the BemaThe purpose and the basis is the most critical issue of all and

brings us face to face with the practical aspects of the Bema.

Some crucial questions are:

Why are we brought before the Bema?

Is it only for rewards or their loss?

Will any punishment be meted out?

Will there be great sorrow?

What’s the basis on which the Bema is conducted?

The Present Consequences of Sin or Disobedience

While the following is not exhaustive, it demonstrates that sin in the life of a believer is not a small issue.

(1) Loss of Fellowship With the Lord.

Known sin in one’s life causes a loss of intimate fellowship with the Lord with the consequent loss of His joy and peace -

Ps. 32:3-4 (NIV)

When I kept silent,

my bones wasted away

through my groaning all day long.

For day and night

your hand was heavy on me;

my strength was sapped

as in the heat of summer

(2) Divine Discipline From the Lord Here in Time.

We should not think of discipline as punishment.

Discipline from God is the gracious work of a Father to train and develop His children.

Sometimes this comes in the form of various kinds of testing, trials, failure, and predicaments which He uses to correct us, to train us, and, if we have been going our own stubborn way, to increase our misery.

The goal, however, is always to bring us back to Him:

Heb. 12:5-11 (NIV)

5 And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,

“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,

and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,

6 because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,

and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”

7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children.

For what children are not disciplined by their father?

8 If you are not disciplined and everyone undergoes discipline then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it.

How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live!

10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.

11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

The Judgement Series Part XXV of XXXI

The Purpose of the Bema ?

It is not punitive.

It is not to judge believers for sin of any kind, confessed or unconfessed.

“Scripture teaches that for the believer God’s justice has already been fully and forever satisfied at the Cross in relation to the believer’s sins.

If God were to punish the believer judicially for his sins for which Christ has already rendered payment, He would be requiring two payments for sin and would therefore be unjust.

Such a concept (punishment for sin) erroneously disparages the all-sufficiency of Christ’s death on the cross.”

Christ paid the penalty for the believer’s pre- and post-conversion sins.

The believer will forfeit rewards which he could have received, but he will not be punished in the judicial sense of “paying” for his sins.

Scripture teaches that all sins, both confessed and unconfessed, have been forgiven and taken care of by the work of Christ on the Cross so the Christian will never face those sins again at the judgment.

The following verses demonstrate the basic principle of the complete and finished nature of Christ’s work:

Hebrews 10:14 (NIV)

For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.

Romans 5:19 (NIV)

For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.

Colossians 2:10 (NIV)

and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.These verses state the complete results or conclusion:

Hebrews 8:12 (NIV)

For I will forgive their wickedness

and will remember their sins no more.”

Hebrews 10:17-18 (NIV)

17 Then he adds:

“Their sins and lawless acts

I will remember no more.”

18 And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.

Isaiah 44:22 (NIV)

I have swept away your offenses like a cloud,

your sins like the morning mist.

Return to me,

for I have redeemed you.”

Psalm 103:12 (NIV)

as far as the east is from the west,

so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

Micah 7:19 (NIV)

You will again have compassion on us;

you will tread our sins underfoot

and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.

Isaiah 38:17 (NIV)

Surely it was for my benefit

that I suffered such anguish.

In your love you kept me

from the pit of destruction;

you have put all my sins

behind your back.

These verses show why we cannot come into judgment.

Because Christ has born our judgment by being made a curse in our place:

The Positive Aspects of the Bema

(1) To evaluate the quality of every believer’s work whether it is

good or bad, i.e., acceptable and thus worthy of rewards, or unacceptable, to be rejected and unworthy of rewards.

Actually an evaluation is going on every day by the Lord:

Rev. 2:1-7 (NIV)

To the Church in Ephesus

2 “To the angel of the church in Ephesus write:

These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands.

2 I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance.

I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false.

3 You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary.

4 Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.

5 Consider how far you have fallen!

Repent and do the things you did at first.

If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.

6 But you have this in your favor:

You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.

7 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

NICOLAITANS nĭk’ ə lā ə tənz (Νικολαιτής, -αί).

A term appearing in the Revelation (2:6, 15) describing members of Christian congregations who held a doctrine that the Lord hated.

Irenaeus said that they were followers of Nicolaus of Antioch, a proselyte who was among the seven men chosen to serve the Jerusalem congregation (Acts 6:5), who had forsaken true Christian doctrine; he said they lived in unrestrained indulgence (Against Heresies I; 26:3).

Hippolytus confirmed this by noting that Nicolaus left correct doctrine and had the habit of indifference as to what a man ate and as to how he lived (Refutation of Heresies 7:24).

The Apostolic Constitutions (6:8) described them as “shameless in uncleanness.”

Although Clement of Alexandria defended Nicolaus by insisting that his followers had misunderstood him, he observed that the Nicolaitans abandoned themselves to pleasures like goats in a life of shameless self-indulgence (The Miscellianes 2:20).

To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.

All sinful deeds, thoughts, and motives, as well as all good deeds done in the energy of the flesh will be judged.

The Negative Aspects of the Bema

There are a number of passages that refer to the negative aspects

of the Beam Which need to be mentioned and explained.

In these passages we read such things as “give account of himself,” “suffer loss,” “shrink away from Him in shame,” and “recompense for his deeds ... whether good or bad.”

Will believers experience shame, grief, remorse at the Bema?

If so, how do we reconcile this with passages like:

Revelation 7:17 (NASB 1995)

“God shall wipe away every tear from their eye,”

Revelation 21:4 (NASB 1995)

4 and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.” “and He shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there shall no longer be any death;

there shall no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away,”

Isaiah 65:17 (NASB 1995)

New Heavens and a New Earth

“For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth;

And the former things will not be remembered or come to mind.

“For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth;

And the former things shall not be remembered or come to mind”?

The negative effects involve the following:

The loss suffered in 1 Corinthians 3:15 (NASB 1995)

15 If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.

This verse refers to the loss of rewards, not salvation as the verse goes on to make clear.

Please note that the clause “he will suffer loss” would be better rendered “it (the reward) shall be forfeited.”

The disqualification mentioned in:

1 Corinthians 9:27 (NASB 1995)

but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.

Means disqualified from rewards, not loss of salvation.

This is clear from the context and the analogy to the Greek athletic games.

The “recompense” (NASB) or the “receive back” (KJV) of

2 Corinthians 5:10 (KJV)

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

The Judgement Series-Part XXVIII of XXXI

The Nature of the Rewards

What are they and how are they described in Scripture?

They are described in terms of generalities.

What we know about rewards is given in terms that are more general than specific.

These are:

The Promise of Crowns.

This seems to be used as a symbol of victory, authority, and responsibility.

The Promise of Heavenly Treasure

Matt. 6:20 (NASB 1995)

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal;

1 Pet. 1:4 (NASB 1995)

4 to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you,

These verses stress their eternal value and security.

The Promise of Accolades or Commendations

This is seen in those passages where a reward is administered in the form of something like “well done thou good and faithful servant ...”

Matt. 25:21 (NASB 1995)

His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’

Lk. 19:17 (NASB 1995)

17 And he said to him, ‘Well done, good slave, because you have been faithful in a very little thing, you are to be in authority over ten cities.’

1 Cor. 4:5 (NASB 1995 )

5 Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men’s hearts; and then each man’s praise will come to him from God.

The Promises to Overcomer's

These could refer to special blessings of rewards to those believers who overcome special trials and tests rather than a general promise to all believers:

Rev. 2:7 (NASB 1995)

7 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

To him who overcomes, I will grant to eat of the tree of life which is in the Paradise of God.’

Rev. 2:11 (NASB 1995)

11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

He who overcomes will not be hurt by the second death.’

Rev. 2:17 (NASB 1995)

17 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

To him who overcomes, to him I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it.’

Rev. 2:26 (NASB 1995)

26 He who overcomes, and he who keeps My deeds until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations;

The Judgement Series- Part XXIX of XXXI

The Crowns of the New Testament

The Words Used for Crowns

(1) Stephanos.

This was the victor’s crown, the wreath given to the victorious athlete before the judge at the Bema.

It is the word used of the crowns promised to believers for faithfulness in the Christian life.

(2) Diadem.

This was the royal crown, the crown of a king. It is used in the seven diadems of the Beast in Revelation 12:3 and 13:1.

But, to stress that Christ is King of Kings, this word is also used of the many diadems the Lord will wear at His return-

(Rev. 19:12).

The Principle.

The Lord Jesus is the victor, and our victory is really His victory

which is appropriated by faith.

Crowns are given as rewards for faithfulness to appropriate God’s grace and Christ’s victory in the Christian life.

They remind us of our responsibility to abide in the vine.

The Crowns and Their Significance

(1) The Crown of Thorns

(Matt. 27:29; Mk. 15:17; Jn. 19:2, 5).

Speaks of Christ’s work on the cross and stands for His victory over sin, Satan, and death.

(2) The Incorruptible Crown

(1 Cor. 9:25). Two things:

(a) This describes all the crowns.

It contrasts our crowns with the temporal and temporary treasure of this life.

(b) It is also a special crown given for faithfulness in running the race and exercising self-control in order to serve the Lord and finish the race.

(3) The Crown of Exultation or Rejoicing

(1 Thess. 2:19; Phil. 4:1).

This crown is a reward given for witnessing, follow-up, and ministry to others.

In one sense, the Thessalonians will be Paul’s crown, and the effect at the Bema and throughout eternity will be rejoicing or exultation over their presence in heaven.

But what did Paul mean by this?

In view of his use of “crown” (stephanos, the victor’s wreath) in other places, and the fact believers will cast their crowns before the Lord (Rev. 4:10), Paul may also have in mind a personal crown or reward that he will receive because of their presence at the return of the Lord.

Though, in this passage the Apostle does not say he would receive a crown, this is suggested, if not here certainly in other passages.

Though some of them were not living as they should, looking ahead and seeing them in glory brought joy and would bring great rejoicing.

(4) The Crown of Life

(Jam. 1:12; Rev. 2:10).

This crown is given for enduring testings (trials) and temptation.

The crown is not eternal life which is a gift through faith alone in Christ alone (Jn. 4:10; Rom. 3:24; 5:15-17; 6:23; Eph. 2:8), but a reward for enduring trials and overcoming temptation.

An Overview of the Tribulation

Definition of the Tribulation

Biblically, the word “tribulation” comes from the Greek word thlipsis which means “affliction, distress.”

In the Bible it is used:

In general of any kind of testing or affliction or distress which people experience throughout life, and especially of the church and her problems in this world:

John 16:33 (NIV)

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Rom. 2:9 (NIV)

9 There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile;

Rom. 5:3 (NIV)

3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;

Rom. 8:35 (NIV)

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?

Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

Rom. 12:12 (NIV)

12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

1 Thess. 1:6 (NIV)

6 You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit.

Rev. 1:9 (NIV)

John’s Vision of Christ

9 I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.

Rev. 2:9 (NIV)

9 I know your afflictions and your poverty—yet you are rich! I know about the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.

Rev. 2:10 (NIV)

10 Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.

But we find that there are several scriptures, that also uses it to describe a very special and future time of the tribulation that is to come upon the whole earth:

9 “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.

Matt. 24:21 (NIV)

21 For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again.

Matt. 24:29 (NIV)

29 “Immediately after the distress of those days

“‘the sun will be darkened,

and the moon will not give its light;

the stars will fall from the sky,

and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’

Prayer in the Bible is how believers of God talk to him. It’s how they make their praise and requests known.

The Scriptures are filled with beautiful examples of people crying out to God and asking for his strength, guidance, healing and more.

As a Christian, I can learn from the prayers in the Bible.

They can encourage me as I read answered prayers and give me hope that God truly does hear my prayers.

This leads to what the purpose of prayer is.

If we don’t understand the purpose of prayer in the Bible, how can we understand the purpose of prayer in our own life?

By understanding how prayer is used in the Bible, you can better understand why Christians pray and exactly what they pray for.

There is no God because I’m a Christian and I prayed for my Child’s life and Jesus let him die !

If there’s a God then why did HE let my son Die ?

Several years ago, there was a vibrant young child that was playing, I believe in the streets, but it had rained severely, and this young child ended up acquiring an infection called “Ameba,” which one acquires when dirty water is inhaled and the virus attacks the brain of the person.

I have often wondered about cases such as this one, where a family and friends are praying and placing all of their faith in God, and the loved one dies, and it appears that their prayers were in vain, or that our Lord failed them.

After years of studying the bible and searching God's heart for answers, I believe that God in His infinite mercies, called - Zachary, home because God knew, that Zachary, wouldn't have been the same person, vibrant child if he would’ve survived.

Therefore God, in His mercies, alleviates further suffering from all parties affected, by calling home the person involved, because the person will have immediate peace, and so that their family and loved ones, can begin the healing process, that only time can sooth.

From what I've read Zachary and his family are Christians, and put their faith in our Lord, so at some point, they will all be reunited with Zachary

and be perpetually in the presence of our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus.

Yes, I agree that the sting of death will never be taken away, but as Christians, we can have peace knowing that our loved one’s, are with our lord in heaven, where they suffer no more.

May our Lord Jesus Christ, Bless you and your grieving family and friends, but let us not forget what Jesus said...nothing can separate us from the love of Christ, not even death!

Hope this comforts anyone, who has lost a loved one and you may have believed that God doesn’t exist, or that He failed You and your family, in your time of need.

In today’s Bible Study, we are going to study:

The Doctrine of Prayer

Prayer is the act of asking God to do what he has already promised to do.

We do this through the power of the Spirit as adopted children through the Messiah Jesus.

We see this kind of interaction with God evidenced throughout the Bible as his people continue to ask him to follow through on his promises and bring about his kingdom and rule.

We can be confident that God will answer our prayer for his purposes because he has explicitly promised to bring his purposes to pass.

These include for God to glorify himself, for forgiveness, for our own knowledge of God, for godly wisdom, for the strength to obey, and for the gospel to spread.

Prayer is not defined explicitly anywhere in the Bible, but its basic meaning is to ask.

This is evident in, for example, the Lord’s Prayer (Matt. 6:9–13), where in response to a request to “teach us to pray!” from his disciples, Jesus gives them a framework for asking God to act by building his kingdom, promoting his reputation, and forgiving and sustaining them, his servants.

Their ‘asking,’ then, is to be shaped by God’s prior action—to put it simply, to pray is to ask God to do what he in his grace has already promised to do.

Prayer in the Bible is not a generic word for a vaguely spiritual activity but is firmly rooted in the nature and action of God.

John Calvin makes this point clear in his discussion of prayer in The Institutes of the Christian Religion (III.XX.1):

Just as faith is born from the gospel, so through it our hearts are trained to call upon God’s name [Rom. 10:14-17].

And this is precisely what [the apostle] had said a little before:

the Spirit of adoption, who seals the witness of the gospel in our hearts [Rom. 8:16] raises up our spirits to dare to show forth to God their desires, to stir up unspeakable groanings [Rom. 8:26], and confidently cry, “Abba! Father!” [Rom.8:15].

Theologically, then, God invites us through the gospel to participate in the life of the Trinity through union with Christ, which entails asking God the Father to do specific things for us on the basis of the fact that we now participate in Jesus’s sonship by adoption through faith, which is brought about by the power of the Spirit.

Matthew 7:7–11, with its repeated command to ask, makes this very clear—in particular in its closing assurance that “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”

This asking is shaped and controlled by the gospel—that is, what God has already committed to do for his people.

It is normally to be addressed to the Father through the Son in the power of the Spirit.

Prayer in the Old Testament

This understanding of prayer as asking God to do what he has promised is displayed in almost every part of the Old Testament.

From Genesis 4:26, when men “began to call on the name of Yahweh” (presumably to fulfill the promise of a rescuer in Gen. 3:15), onwards, the prayers of God’s people are essentially gospel-shaped, asking God to come through on his covenant promises.

Does the bible say we die ?

Death is the absence or withdrawal of breath and the life force that makes

movement, metabolism, and interrelation with others possible.

The Old Testament.The Nature of Death.

Life and death are totally under Yahweh's sovereignty.

God is the source of all life ( Psalm 36:9 ).

There are no organisms anywhere who have not received their life force from him: "In his hand is the life of every creature, and the breath of all mankind" ( Job 12:10 ).

The number of the days of our life is written in God's book before one of them comes to be ( Job 14:5 ; Psalm 139:16 ).

The Hebrew verb gawa, which means "expire, breathe one's last, " is used twenty-three times to describe death.

Psalm 104:29 says, "when you take away their breath, they die and return to the dust."

"If it were his intention and he withdrew his spirit and breath, all mankind would perish" ( Job 34:14-15 ).

In the Bible, death is more than the cessation of all physiological processes.

By divine command ( Psalm 90:3 ), the body returns to dust and the spirit goes back to God who gave it ( Gen 2:7 ; Eccl 12:7 ).

Those who die are said to be gathered to their people ( Gen 25:8 ; 35:29 ; 49:33).

This gathering is often seen as a reference to the central repository of the family tomb where eventually everyone's bones were thrown.

Abraham's people, however, were buried around Haran ( Genesis 24:4 Genesis 24:10 ).

Only he and Sarah were buried in Canaan ( Gen 23:19; 25:9 ).

Jacob is gathered to his people at death, but not buried until at least seven weeks later ( 49:33 ; Genesis 50:3 Genesis 50:10 ).

When Jacob says he is "going down" to Joseph ( Gen 37:35 ), he cannot be referring to a common burial since no one knew where Joseph's body was.

Deceased Samuel told Saul he and his sons would be with him the next day ( 1 Sam 28:19 ).

He could not have meant they would all be buried together the next day since Saul's headless body was buried in Jabesh Gilead some time after his death. ( 1 Samuel 31:9-11 ).

David said of his dead son, "I will go to him, but he will not return to me" ( 2 Sam 12:23 ).

Samuel was buried in his house at Ramah ( 1 Sam 25:1 ); but in 28:13, 15, he comes up from the earth to Saul at Endor protesting that he has been disturbed.

The intense emotional reaction of Saul and the medium, as well as their remarks about Samuel, indicate that they believed they had actually seen his departed spirit.

Had this been some sort of demonic delusion, the narrator would certainly have been obligated to call this to the attention of his audience.

It is difficult to avoid the fact that in the Old Testament people believed a person's physical remains were interred in one place, and that part of the person capable of consciousness and personality went to another location.

The gathering to one's people was an event taking place before burial at the time of death.

The Book of 1 Kings

This summary of the book of 1 Kings provides information about the title, author(s), date of writing, chronology, theme, theology, outline, a brief overview, and the chapters of the Book of 1 Kings.

Title 1 and 2 Kings (like 1 and 2 Samuel and 1 and 2 Chronicles) are actually one literary work, called in Hebrew tradition simply "Kings."

The division of this work into two books was introduced by the translators of the Septuagint (the pre-Christian Greek translation of the OT) and subsequently followed in the Latin Vulgate (c. a.d. 400) and most modern versions.

In 1448 the division into two sections also appeared in a Hebrew manuscript and was perpetuated in later printed editions of the Hebrew text.

Both the Septuagint and the Latin Vulgate further designated Samuel and Kings in a way that emphasized the relationship of these two works (Septuagint: First, Second, Third and Fourth Book of Kingdoms; Latin Vulgate: First, Second, Third and Fourth Kings).

Together Samuel and Kings relate the whole history of the monarchy, from its rise under the ministry of Samuel to its fall at the hands of the Babylonians.

The division between 1 and 2 Kings has been made at a somewhat arbitrary and yet appropriate place, shortly after the deaths of Ahab of the northern kingdom (22:37) and Jehoshaphat of the southern kingdom (22:50).

Placing the division at this point causes the account of the reign of Ahaziah of Israel to overlap the end of 1 Kings (22:51-53) and the beginning of 2 Kings (ch. 1).

The same is true of the narration of the ministry of Elijah, which for the most part appears in 1 Kings (chs. 17 - 19).

However, his final act of judgment and the passing of his cloak to Elisha at the moment of his ascension to heaven in a whirlwind are contained in 2 Kings 1:1 -- 2:17.

Author, Sources and Date There is little conclusive evidence as to the identity of the author of 1,2 Kings. Although Jewish tradition credits Jeremiah, few today accept this as likely.

Whoever the author was, it is clear that he was familiar with the book of Deuteronomy -- as were many of Israel's prophets.

It is also clear that he used a variety of sources in compiling his history of the monarchy.

The Book of 2nd Kings

Second Kings is actually the second half of a single book (1 and 2 Kings) that was divided into two parts, because it was too long to fit on one scroll.

Together the books continue the history of the nation that was begun in 1 and 2 Samuel. As in 1 Kings the history is told in a special way. The story moves back and forth between reports of the kings in Judah (the southern kingdom) and reports of the kings in Israel (the northern kingdom). That allows the reader to compare what was going on in the south with what was going on in the north. 2 KINGS WAS WRITTEN The destruction of Jerusalem in 586 B.C. was the major event that prompted the writing of 2 Kings. The smashing of the city walls, the burning of the temple, and the humiliation of the people resulted in a religious crisis among the survivors. God had promised to protect Judah and allow its kings to rule forever. But when Jerusalem was destroyed and the temple was burned, the line of rulers from David’s family line also came to an end Together, these events threatened to destroy the people’s trust in God, who seemed to have abandoned them. The history as recorded in 1 and 2 Kings was completed after the destruction of Jerusalem, so the books are a response to this event. Second Kings shows the people that their kings, and not God, had been unfaithful. God had been very patient with Israel and Judah, even after the people and their leaders disobeyed God and worshiped idols. Prophets were sent over and over to warn the people and their kings to stop worshiping other gods and turn back to him. Finally, the people were punished. The two kingdoms were destroyed, and the people were forced to live in foreign nations. Nathan’s promise to David that one of his descendants would always rule Israel (2 Sam 7) is repeated often in 1 and 2 Kings. This repeated promise was intended to encourage the people to have hope that one day in the future, Israel’s punishment would end, and they would once again be ruled by a king descended from David’s family. THE HISTORICAL ACCOUNT OF 2 KINGS Second Kings is presented as an historical account of three hundred years of Israel’s and Judah’s monarchy. But it is important to realize that the authors were also writing this history as an interpretation of the events that led to the destruction of the nation. As a result, these pages are also filled with an emphasis on traditional values, with frequent warnings against unfaithfulness, and with calls for obedience to God’s commandments. On several occasions the authors explain why certain events have taken place (2 Kgs 17.7-23) or whether or not a particular king was good or bad. Sometimes these explanations appear in the speeches or statements made by God, a king, or a prophet (1 Kgs 9.3-9; 11.11-13; 14.7-16; 2 Kgs 20.16-18; 22.15-20).

Iron Sharpens Iron

What Is the Meaning of “Iron Sharpens Iron” in Proverbs 27:17?

There is an interesting and perhaps convincing illustration of both friendship and accountability found in Proverbs 27:17, “Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another” (NASB).

In Old Testament times, one iron blade was used to sharpen another blade until both became more effective tools.

This visual aid of a common implement of work or war provides a practical model for many human relationships.

We can see the connections to life and in that, this verse and the principles it contains becomes quite useful and life related.

Iron Sharpens Iron: A Principle of Relationship

The concept of “iron sharpening iron” obviously implies at least two pieces of iron.

It would be impossible for one tool to become sharper without the presence of the other.

Left alone, both blades would be dull and quite useless.

This simple Proverb illustrates an important biblical principle.

God expects us to live and serve in a community of other believers (see Hebrews 10:25), and He desires for us to build loving and growing relationships with others (see 1 Thessalonians 2:8).

The process of helping someone else improve their effectiveness absolutely requires a positive relationship.

Earlier in this same chapter (Proverbs 6:4) it says, “Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but deceitful are the kisses of an enemy.”

We know this concept to be true.

It is much better to accept Godly advice or even constructive criticism from someone we know, someone we love, and someone we know that cares about us, than it is from a stranger or simple acquaintance.

We want to know that the person giving us the counsel has our best interest at heart.

Friends may indeed “wound” us at times, but we can understand and appreciate their genuine motives.

Conversely, the “kisses” from enemies fall flat and we can imagine their devious hypocrisy.

That’s why it is so important for each of us to build growing relationships with others in life.

We all need people who can help us rub off the hard edges and who honestly have our best interests in mind when they do it.

There are times when these sharpening conversations, even from loving friends, can come across as harsh, mean, or judgmental.

But it definitely helps to know that these people care and that they have a genuine interest in helping us improve.

Iron Sharpens Iron: A Principle of Accountability

“Iron sharpening iron” also requires a level of accountability – or a personal inclination to allow significant others look close enough into our lives so that they can see the specific weaknesses or problems areas.

Accountability is not just simply asking another believer what Bible verse they read this morning in their devotional time.

That’s too easy; and it almost assumes the recipient of the question would be dishonest in an attempt to take the pressure off the examination.

Exchanges like this often are seen as trite and superficial.

What Significance of the Resurrection of Christ ?

15 Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand.

2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.

3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance[a]: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,

4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

5 and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve.

The Resurrection of the Dead

Holy Saturday (April 16, 2022)

The Gospels are somewhat silent about what happened on Holy Saturday.

In fact, only Matthew gives explicit details about the day’s events:

Matthew 26:62-66 (NIV)

62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer?

What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?”

63 But Jesus remained silent.

The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God:

Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”

64 “You have said so,” Jesus replied.

“But I say to all of you:

From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said,

“He has spoken blasphemy!

Why do we need any more witnesses?

Look, now you have heard the blasphemy.

66 What do you think?”

“He is worthy of death,” they answered.

The details about the guard at the tomb are imperative when reflecting on the numerous alternative explanations for the empty tomb that have circulated for centuries.

Matthew’s account makes it plain that no one could have overtaken both the Roman guard and the stone that took several men to move in the first place.

What’s more, archaeology and Jewish history reveal that to enter a traditional tomb of that time, one had to stoop down and essentially crawl in—not walk in and out upright.

We know from the disciples’ that they likely remained in hiding, fearing punishment from the Romans or the Jewish elite.

Like anyone who buries a beloved friend, they would’ve been in a state of mourning, likely too shocked to go about their business.

The fact that it was the Sabbath meant that the rest of the community would’ve been somewhat quiet, even after the harrowing events of Friday.

Holy Saturday is also sometimes known as Easter Vigil.

Some churches will hold prayer vigils and light commemorative candles.

However, since Holy Saturday technically marks the end of Lent, certain churches take a more joyous approach with the celebratory ringing of bells.

At home, some will prepare for the next day’s Easter celebration.

66 So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.

Holy Friday - April 15 - ( Nisan 15 )

Good Friday

The Gospel writers create a stark contrast between Palm Sunday and Good Friday, between the crowds shouting “Hosanna!” and “Crucify him!”

After Judas betrays Jesus (identifying Him to Roman guards with a kiss), Jesus is quickly carted through one ordeal after another.

First, He is taken to the Jewish high priest, Caiaphas, who is joined by other elders and religious leaders:

Matthew 26:57, 59-60. (NIV)

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin

57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled.

59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death.

60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward.

It is here that Jesus is physically assaulted for the first time.

Matthew 26:67-68 (NIV)

67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him

68 and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?”

The Jewish leaders realize that their own laws prohibit them from killing Jesus themselves, so they hand Him over to the Roman governor.

Pontius Pilate tells the Jews that he “finds no fault in” Jesus

John 18:28-38. (NIV)

Jesus Before Pilate

28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor.

By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.

29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”

30 “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”

31 Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”

“But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected.

32 This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.

33 Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”

35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied.

“Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me.

What is it you have done?”

36 Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world.

If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders.

But now my kingdom is from another place.”

37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.

Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king.

In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth.

Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”

38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate.

With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.

Their rabid response sends him back inside to speak with Jesus once more, eventually relenting to Jesus’ death sentence.

Holy Thursday - April 14 - ( Nisan 14 )

We will be examining the 5 highlights of this day:

To some, Maundy Thursday may seem like an archaic, mysterious name.

Is it a noun?

An adjective?

What does it have to do with Jesus?

It turns out that maundy comes from the Latin mandatum, where we get the word “mandate” (a word much more familiar to us).

Many Christians reenact the Last Supper with a traditional seder meal similar to the one Jesus would have shared with His disciples;

in this scenario, the words of Jesus are uttered by the priest or pastor.

(Foods eaten can include a lamb shank bone, bitter herbs, and salted vegetables.)

This special service can also include a foot-washing ceremony.

Some churches (particularly Lutherans and Catholics) will choose to offer a Tenebrae service (Tenebrae means “Shadow”).

Here, the sanctuary’s candles or lights are gradually extinguished as clergy strip the altar of its linens.

This can be accompanied by a loud noise at the end, meant to encourage meditation on the sufferings of Christ.

Tenebrae may also start three days of special services, known as triduum.

Let us examine the scriptures related to Holy Thursday and related events ascribed to this day:

Peter and John, are sent to make preparation for the passover meal. - Luke 22:8 (NIV)

8Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.”

Holy Wednesday - April 13- ( Nisan 13)

Jesus’ popularity had reached an apex with His entry into Jerusalem (John 12:19), and the Jewish religious leaders ramped up their efforts to rid themselves of Him.

John 12:19 ( TEV )

Between (alleged) blasphemy, public miracles, and blatant attacks on the religious establishment, they had now compiled what they believed was sufficient reason to take action.

On Wednesday, plans were set in motion to capture Jesus—and kill Him.

In the words of Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year, “You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish” (John 11:49-53).

Later, Jesus is anointed by Mary at Bethany, with an expensive jar of perfume that Jesus later suggests is a preparation for His burial.

Understandably, Jewish leaders were angered at Jesus’ claim to be the Son of God and may have feared that they would lose power and authority if Jesus were to “come to power.”

Yet Jesus was very popular with many people, and his miracles were hard to explain away.

They needed to find and arrest him, but how?

Their question was answered when Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus’ disciples, approached them with an offer to hand over Jesus for 30 pieces of silver.

Judas’ possible motives have been debated throughout the centuries.

One thing is for certain:

his involvement meant the chief priests didn’t require any extended searches for Jesus the next evening.

This day is also sometimes referred to as Good Wednesday, or Great and Holy Wednesday, by Eastern Christian churches.

In the West, it's sometimes called Spy Wednesday.

In countries such as the Czech Republic, Wednesday is used to give homes a thorough cleaning in preparation for Easter Sunday.

The major event of Holy Wednesday is Judas’ decision to betray Jesus.

Although the betrayal doesn’t take place for another day, our knowledge of the impending act colors our reading of the Last Supper story, which we’ll encounter tomorrow.

Holy Tuesday - April 12 - ( Nisan 12 )

Gospel accounts suggest that on Tuesday, Jesus continued to publicize His message by teaching parables in the temple.

The parable of the tenants in particular (Matthew 21:33-44) depicts a dramatic and even violent reflection of Jesus’ eventual sacrifice—an assignment from His Heavenly Father.

Jesus also addresses the end times, the kingdom of God, the hypocrisy of those who claim to fear God, and what to expect when the Son of Man comes.

In each parable, He speaks with certainty and gravity.

Once again, Jesus’ authority to teach in such a way is questioned.

This time, the chief priests seek to arrest Jesus after sensing He is speaking against them (Matthew 21:45).

At this point, the crowd still reveres Jesus, so these plans are put on hold.

Each of these events is designed to show the reader that Jesus was the Son of God and that He knew it.

No one could accuse Jesus of being a humble teacher indignant at the thought of being worshiped.

Instead, Jesus invites this recognition of His deity-

(Matthew 24:25, Matthew 26:1).

Though not as highly celebrated as some of the other weekdays, the Catholic Church observes Holy Tuesday with relevant Scripture readings and hymns.

In Mexico and Spain, Tuesday marks another day of Semana Santa (“Holy Week”), in which schools and many businesses are closed to allow for an extended celebration.

Events recorded by scriptures on this day:

Posses the Temple and its precincts
Confounds and pronounces “ Woes,” upon His enemies; Whenever we read that Jesus says “ Woe,” to … it means that HE, has already judged that person(s) on the spot.
Leaves city; Olivet discourse on way back to Bethany
Finds “Fig,” withered; teaches on “Faith”
Judas bargains with the Sanhedrin to betray Jesus
Spends the night in Bethany.

Holy Monday (April 11, 2022)

Jesus had spent the evening of Palm Sunday out of the city, and upon return the next day, he taught in the temple of Jerusalem.

He shared parables that used simple imagery to explain the kingdom of God.

The Jewish leaders thought he was being blasphemous by doing so and questioned him (Matthew 21:23).

Later, as he walked through the temple, Jesus became angry that the holy place of worship had become a place for buying and selling—and taking advantage of the poor.

In his zeal, he overturned tables, enraging the vendors (Matthew 21:12-16).

Then he spent the evening with his friends Lazarus, Mary, and Martha (Matthew 21:17).

It is here, at the beginning of the week, that Jesus increases and intensifies His public messages.

The Gospels record the outrage of the leaders of the day, and we are meant to recognize that Jesus’ death on Good Friday will not be accidental or unexpected.

Instead, Jesus deliberately stirs up the anger of those who wish to kill Him because He fully understands His mission as a sacrifice for the sins of the world.

The magnitude of Jesus’ messages contrasts with His decision to reconnect with several close friends.

This was doubtless an encouragement to the three siblings in question and Jesus Himself as He processed what lay ahead of Him.

Jesus had declared Himself to be “the resurrection and the life” shortly before raising Lazarus from the dead—a clear foreshadowing of His own death and resurrection.

The Eastern Orthodox Church observes Holy Monday with Bible readings and special hymns recounting the day’s events.

12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there.

He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves.

13 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.”

14 The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them.

15 But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple courts, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they were indignant.

“‘From the lips of children and infants

you, Lord, have called forth your praise?”

Palm Sunday

What Is the Meaning of Palm Sunday and Why Celebrate it?

Perhaps your church has children wave palm branches down the aisles of the congregation.

Or maybe they use burn palm branches from year’s past to create crosses on foreheads during Ash Wednesday.

No matter what the case, many Christians celebrate a holy event known as Palm Sunday.

This event commemorates when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, right before his death.

Although the people cried “Save us, now” and greeted him with anxious expectation, by Friday, they would crucify him.

And a week after he enters Jerusalem, he resurrects.

In this article, we’ll explore what Palm Sunday means and why we celebrate it.

What Is the Meaning of Palm Sunday?

The various Gospels hold accounts of what happened on Palm Sunday. Let’s take a look at Matthew’s account.

Matthew 21:1-11:

“As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her.

Untie them and bring them to me.

If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”

This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”

The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them.

They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on.

A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.

The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!”

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

Hosanna, in Greek, is an exclamation of adoration or praise (Strong's Concordance #G5614). It is recorded only five times in six KJV New Testament verses (Matthew 21:9, 15, Mark 11:9 - 10, John 12:13)

Hosanna derives its origin and meaning from the Hebrew phrase translated as "save now" as is found in Psalm 118.

When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”

The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

Palm Sunday remembers when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, as foretold in a prophecy found in the Old Testament in Isaiah and Zechariah.

The cross highlights, in the most graphic possible manner, the humanity of Jesus. It cannot be overstated that Jesus was not half God and half man. Jesus was fully God and fully man, and though we have no problem speaking of the God qualities of Jesus, I am convinced that we struggle to wrap our minds around the humanity of our Lord. He was not even some superhuman species that was somehow immune to all the human ills like splinters, sore muscles, fatigue, skin rash, swimmers’ ear, and sunburn. In fact, Isaiah would say of the Suffering Servant, “Like a root out of parched ground; he has no stately form or majesty that we should look upon him, nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him” (Isaiah 53:2). Jesus was not some new and improved breed of man. He took on flesh like ours, and he suffered in the same ways as we do. It was essential that Christ take on human flesh to redeem all that had been lost. Anything less would fail to accomplish God’s purpose of redemption. God’s Creation The issue of Christ’s humanity is understood most fully only as it is traced back to the account of creation’s beginning in the garden. In Genesis 1 and 2, we are allowed a limited glimpse into the birth of God’s good world. The Creator spoke, and light dispelled darkness for the very first time. But this was just the beginning of our Maker’s masterpiece. He established time with the division of day and night and then separated the water from the land followed by the planting of the largest garden ever. Soon the vegetation sprouted forth fruit and the earth sprung to life. On the fifth day, as the Creator spoke and the vegetation was well established, the ocean waters began to churn with every imaginable fish and creature of the deep as overhead, newly created birds winged their way across the heavens. Then, as in a growing crescendo, the great beasts and livestock of the field began to run and roam, and as God looked on what he saw, he declared that it was good. This was not some fairy tale or ethereal fantasy land. This world was a real, physical world that could be experienced with all the human senses. This world was not restricted to the boundaries of earth alone but must be understood to include the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1). This beautiful world, in which the spiritual and earthly lived in harmony, was the place God had designed where the human drama would unfold. It is noteworthy that this created realm, which fully satisfies what the Creator himself had envisioned, is not called heaven. When God originally shaped the space in which he intended humanity to inhabit forever, it is our very own physical world where the birds fly high, the sea creatures swim deep, the animals run free, and the stars shine bright. For a time, it was paradise in every sense of the word, but the utopia was threatened by the very man entrusted to guard it

The Day Star

Let us examine the names of satan and what they mean in the original language: Satan: In Judaism, the word Satan is used as a verb. It does not refer to a person, rather it refers to temptation or difficulty to overcome. The Old Testament uses the name Beelzebub to speak of the god of Ekron. We do not see it being used as a name for Satan until the writings of the New Testament. Beelzebub, The Pharisees, and Jesus Christ In Matthew 12, the Pharisees accuse Jesus of casting out demons by the power of "Beelzebub, the prince of demons." Read the full exchange here: "Then a demon-oppressed man who was blind and mute was brought to him, and he healed him, so that the man spoke and saw. And all the people were amazed, and said, "Can this be the Son of David?" But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, "It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons." Knowing their thoughts, he said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand. And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you." (Matthew 12:22-28) What Does the Name Beelzebub Mean? Beelzebub means “lord of the flies.” In Hebrew and Jewish literature, the name is translated to mean “lord of dung” or “lord of filth.” Images of Beelzebub portray him as a fly or flying insect. Scholars have learned that the image of the fly as Beelzebub derives from either the thought that he is a sun god that brings the flies, or he is the god invoked to drive flies away from the sacrifice. We should also note that Beelzebub is the Greek form of the word Baal-zebub. There are strong connections to Baal worship in conjunction with the worship of Beelzebub. Baal was a Canaanite fertility god in the Old Testament. The term zebub means “exalted dwelling.” When we put those two terms together, we have the name prince of demons. What Does Beelzebub Do? In ancient religions, Beelzebub was associated with sacrifices. He was invoked to drive away the flies that always came as sacrifices were made and blood was shed. During the time of Jesus, Beelzebub becomes a prince of demons. The name becomes a reference to Satan and a distinct insult to Jesus.

In some cases, traffickers trick, defraud or physically force victims into providing commercial sex.

In others, victims are lied to, assaulted, threatened or manipulated into working under inhumane, illegal or otherwise unacceptable conditions.

It is a multi-billion dollar criminal industry that denies freedom to 24.9 million people around the world.

Who is Most Vulnerable?

Have an unstable living situation

Have previously experienced other forms of violence such as sexual abuse or domestic violence

Have run away or are involved in the juvenile justice or child welfare system

Are undocumented immigrants

Are facing poverty or economic need

Have a caregiver or family member who has a substance use issue

Are addicted to drugs or alcohol

How do traffickers control victims

Traffickers employ a variety of control tactics, the most common include physical and emotional abuse and threats, isolation from friends and family, and economic abuse. They make promises aimed at addressing the needs of their target in order to impose control. How Parents Can Support Their Transgender Teens

A new study shows that teens exploring their gender identity value simple acts of caring from their parents the most.

About the Author

When teenagers confide that they are transgender or uncertain about their gender identity, their parents may be unsure how to offer support.

To understand what types of family support transgender adolescents consider helpful, a Stanford research team asked 25 of them for their thoughts. The team also interviewed the teens’ parents.

The actions teens said they valued most were among the simplest, the researchers discovered. Their findings were published in March in the Journal of Adolescent Health.

Teens said they most appreciated having parents use their preferred name and pronoun, as well as knowing that their parents were emotionally available and listening to their concerns.

The teenagers usually rated their parents as more supportive than the parents rated themselves, said Tandy Aye, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics at Stanford Medicine and a pediatric endocrinologist at the Stanford Children’s Health Pediatric and Adolescent Gender Clinic. Aye is the senior author of the study.

“Even when parents are thinking that there is tension over gender identity, that parent-child relationship is still super important,” said Aye. She spoke with

Stanford Medicine News about her research.

Erin Digitale: Set the stage for this study. What was previously known about the value of family support for transgender children?

Tandy Aye: Kristina Olson, a researcher in Seattle, has studied how important family support is for young kids going through gender transition or who are gender-expansive, meaning their gender identity doesn’t fit neatly into traditional “boy” or “girl” categories.

If they have a supportive family from the beginning, children who are transgender and gender-expansive don’t experience higher rates of anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, or suicide compared with cisgender peers.

Without family support, all those mental health risks increase substantially.

And having a family use a child’s preferred name and pronoun has been shown to be protective.

ED: What was new about your approach?

TA: In our study, we were trying to classify the commonalities in families that were supportive. No one had really looked at both perspectives—of transgender teens and of their parents—to see what support looks like.

We used a combination of closed-ended survey questions and open-ended interviews to get information about what parents and teens were thinking, saying, and doing at pivotal times during the teenager’s gender journey.

We interviewed parents and adolescents separately; it was very important that we got their views independently.

Among those who seek care at our gender clinic, we meet all sorts of families, and as we were doing this study, we realized that there’s support and there’s acceptance, but they don’t always go hand in hand.

Hopefully, support leads to acceptance. We hope we can use what we discovered to help families who are not initially supportive learn how to support their teens.

Loss of interest or pleasure in most or all normal activities, such as sex, hobbies or sports

Insomnia or sleeping too much

Tiredness and lack of energy, so even small tasks take extra effort

Changes in appetite —

reduced appetite and weight loss or increased cravings for food and weight gain

Anxiety, agitation or restlessness

Slowed thinking, speaking or body movements

Feelings of worthlessness or guilt, fixating on past failures or blaming yourself for things that aren't your responsibility

There is an addiction in this society that affects thousands of people, yet the discussions about its use and abuse are often pushed aside and ignored out of shame and misunderstanding.

With our culture’s obsession with sex coming from all angles including television, advertisement, social media, and many other forms, it is no wonder why some people do become addicted to pornography.

Pornography accounts for over 40 million Americans as regular visitors to pornographic internet sites.

The following infographic details just how serious and ingrained the use of pornography is in our society and culture (source).

These numbers and accounts of usage really aren’t that different when it comes to an individual of faith.

As pornography is easily accessible, and the Internet of today makes it possible to have access to this material with just a few simple clicks either on one’s computer, tablet, and/or phone.

All it takes is an Internet search and one can find whatever pornography that they desire.

A person does not have to leave their home to access this material.

There is no more going to the adult store and having to make a purchase.

A person can see pornographic images and watch movies without having to leave their home.

They can even order this material online.

Granted, for some adults, looking at these images alone is not harmful or addictive, but those individuals are growing smaller in number.

Besides there are many other social, moral, and personally responsible reasons why one should refrain from utilizing pornography.

Although primarily, it is when a person cannot look away and their addiction begins to affect their relationships that there is definitely a problem with pornography.

If a person is trying to access porn at places that can have serious consequences such as at work, then this is a key sign there is a problem.

Like other addictions, when one is struggling with a compulsion and/or addiction to pornography, they usually cannot give it up on their own.

They almost always need the assistance of a professional counselor, group counseling, and a group of their peers to help give up this addiction, develop healthy relationships, and learn how to manage their lives without their compulsion to pornography usage.

One of the major struggles with pornography is that it creates the illusion that one’s intimate needs (of which sex is a part) can be met through the fantasy that is offered in whatever pornography one may be using.

In addition to being attracted to the physical images, people often become addicted to the fantasy.

There are so many different types of pornography that push the sexual boundaries so a person can find what they are looking for.

For some, part of the appeal is that the participants in pornography cannot say no.

They submit to every sexual demand that their partner has without protest.

An addict usually becomes so interested in the world of pornography that their intimate relationships suffer, sometimes to the extreme of erectile dysfunction.

Not to mention, one can spend an enormous amount of time and money on porn, for it is easy to purchase a large amount of pornography and the price is not always cheap.

Gradually, the idea of a children’s hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, where it would be the first fully integrated hospital in the South, took shape. Introduction into Eschatology

Eschatology is the field of Christian theology which concerns the study of last things.

It is the study of Christ’s future return, the resurrection, the rapture, the final judgment, the eternal blessedness of the redeemed with Christ, and the eternal punishment of the damned apart from his presence.

Upon these rudimentary points, there is considerable agreement, yet with regard to the particulars, there has been a wide diversity of thought among Christians from the very earliest centuries of the Church.

The various eschatologies promoted by theologians throughout history can be organized into three general systems: amillennialism, postmillennialism, and premillennialism.

Each term is distinguished by a prefix attached to the word “millennium,” which is a compound of two Latin terms, mille (thousand), and annus (year).1

The reason for this nomenclature is because, over time, each view began to be known by its interpretation of Revelation 20:1-10, particularly the timing of the return of Christ with reference to the period of 1,000 years mentioned therein.

Therefore, amillennialists expect no millennium

(The prefix –a means, “no”),

postmillennialists believe Christ returns after the millennium (the prefix –post, means “after”),

and premillennialists believe Christ returns before the millennium (the prefix –pre, means “before”).

Amillennialism Although amillennialists expect no millennial kingdom, this does not mean amillennialists deny a millennium entirely, as the terminology may seem to imply.

Anthony Hoekema provides a concise amillennial interpretation of Revelation 20:

Amillennialists interpret the millennium … as describing the present reign of the souls of deceased believers with Christ in heaven.

They understand the binding of Satan … as being in effect during the entire period between the first and second coming of Christ, though ending shortly before Christ’s return.

They teach that Christ will return after this heavenly reign.

Amillennialists believe we are presently living in the millennial kingdom, which is characterized by the simultaneous experiences of gospel victory and suffering for the gospel.

This obviously indicates amillennialists interpret “one thousand” figuratively.

The gospel is victorious because Satan is bound, rendering him incapable of preventing the spread of the gospel; yet he is not utterly powerless from persecuting the Church.

Just before the end, Satan will again be permitted to deceive the nations and persecution will increase dramatically.

Christians are awaiting the visible, bodily return of Christ, which brings an end to all their suffering.

The second coming occurs concurrently with the general resurrection and a public rapture of the Church, who immediately returns to earth with Christ.

Christ then judges the world, and finally ushers in the eternal state.

Important to the amillennialist understanding is the tension of “already/not yet.”

Christians presently live in the inaugurated kingdom, as Christ reigns from heaven; yet, they await the kingdom’s full realization, when Christ will reign on Earth eternally.

What Is the Meaning of “Iron Sharpens Iron” in Proverbs 27:17?

There is an interesting and perhaps convincing illustration of both friendship and accountability found in Proverbs 27:17, “Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another” (NASB).

In Old Testament times, one iron blade was used to sharpen another blade until both became more effective tools.

This visual aid of a common implement of work or war provides a practical model for many human relationships.

We can see the connections to life and in that, this verse and the principles it contains becomes quite useful and life related.

Iron Sharpens Iron: A Principle of Relationship

The concept of “iron sharpening iron” obviously implies at least two pieces of iron.

It would be impossible for one tool to become sharper without the presence of the other.

Left alone, both blades would be dull and quite useless.

This simple Proverb illustrates an important biblical principle.

God expects us to live and serve in a community of other believers (see Hebrews 10:25), and He desires for us to build loving and growing relationships with others (see 1 Thessalonians 2:8).

The process of helping someone else improve their effectiveness absolutely requires a positive relationship.

Earlier in this same chapter (Proverbs 6:4) it says, “Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but deceitful are the kisses of an enemy.”

We know this concept to be true.

We want to know that the person giving us the counsel has our best interest at heart. Friends may indeed “wound” us at times, but we can understand and appreciate their genuine motives.

Conversely, the “kisses” from enemies fall flat and we can imagine their devious hypocrisy.

That’s why it is so important for each of us to build growing relationships with others in life.

We all need people who can help us rub off the hard edges and who honestly have our best interests in mind when they do it.

There are times when these sharpening conversations, even from loving friends, can come across as harsh, mean, or judgmental.

But it definitely helps to know that these people care and that they have a genuine interest in helping us improve.

Iron Sharpens Iron: A Principle of Accountability

Accountability is not just simply asking another believer what Bible verse they read this morning in their devotional time.

That’s too easy; and it almost assumes the recipient of the question would be dishonest in an attempt to take the pressure off the examination.

The Pharisees:

In Jesus’ day, the Pharisees were the most respected and influential group in Judaism.

Having originated about 135 B.C.,they were a committed fellowship of men, determined to follow in exact detail everything required in the Mosaic Law.

“Pharisees ” means

Pharisees : a religious party or school among the Jews at the time of Christ, so called from perishin , the Aramaic form of the Hebrew word perushim , "separated."

The chief sects among the Jews were the Pharisees, the Sadducees and the Essenes, who may be described respectively as the Formalists, the Freethinkers and the Puritans.

He denounced them in the bitterest language; see (Matthew 15:7,8; 23:5,13,14,15,23; Mark 7:6; Luke 11:42-44) and compare (Mark 7:1-5; 11:29; 12:19,20; Luke 6:28,37-42)

To understand the Pharisees is by contrast an aid toward understanding the spirit of uncorrupted Christianity.

The fundamental principle all of the of the Pharisees, common to them with all orthodox modern Jews, is that by the side of the written law regarded as a summary of the principles and general laws of the Hebrew people there was on oral law to complete and to explain the written law, given to Moses on Mount Sinai and transmitted by him by word of mouth.

While it was the aim of Jesus to call men to the law of God itself as the supreme guide of life, the Pharisees, upon the Pretense of maintaining it intact, multiplied minute precepts and distinctions to such an extent that the whole life of the Israelite was hemmed in and burdened on every side by instructions so numerous and trifling that the law was almost if not wholly lost sight of.

These "traditions" as they were called, had long been gradually accumulating.

Of the trifling character of these regulations innumerable instances are to be found in the Mishna.

I have listed a few cases that reflect what happens when you allow the aforementioned emotions overtake you.

Soon after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, letters laced with anthrax began appearing in the U.S. mail.

Five Americans were killed and 17 were sickened in what became the worst biological attacks in U.S. history.

The ensuing investigation by the FBI and its partners—code-named “Amerithrax”—has been one of the largest and most complex in the history of law enforcement.

In August 2008, Department of Justice and FBI officials announced a breakthrough in the case and released documents and information showing that charges were about to be brought against Dr. Bruce Ivins, who took his own life before those charges could be filed.

On February 19, 2010, the Justice Department, the FBI, and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service formally concluded the investigation into the 2001 anthrax attacks and issued an Investigative Summary.

On February 26, 1993, at about 17 minutes past noon, a thunderous explosion rocked lower Manhattan.

The epicenter was the parking garage beneath the World Trade Center, where a massive eruption carved out a nearly 100-foot crater several stories deep and several more high.

Six people were killed almost instantly. Smoke and flames began filling the wound and streaming upward into the building.

Those who weren’t trapped were soon pouring out of the building—many panic-stricken and covered in soot.

More than a thousand people were hurt in some way, some badly, with crushed limbs.

Middle Eastern terrorism had arrived on American soil—with a bang.

As a small band of terrorists scurried away from the scene unnoticed, the FBI and its partners on the New York Joint Terrorism Task Force began staffing up a command center and preparing to send in a team to investigate.

Their instincts told them that this was terrorism—they’d been tracking Islamic fundamentalists in the city for months and, they’d later learn, were tantalizingly close to encountering the planners of this attack.

But hunches weren’t enough; what was needed was definitive proof.

They’d have it soon enough.

The massive investigation that followed—

led by the task force, with some 700 FBI agents worldwide ultimately joining in—

quickly uncovered a key bit of evidence.

In the rubble investigators uncovered a vehicle identification number on a piece of wreckage that seemed suspiciously obliterated.

A search of our crime records returned a match: the number belonged to a rented van reported stolen the day before the attack.

An Islamic fundamentalist named Mohammad Salameh had rented the vehicle, we learned, and on March 4, an FBI SWAT team arrested him as he tried in vain to get his $400 deposit back.

One clue led to another and we soon had in custody three more suspects—Nidal Ayyad, Mahmoud Abouhalima, and Ahmed Ajaj.
