The threat of sin within and among those who make up the Bride of Christ has existed since the beginning, and the danger of wolves is something we are warned about throughout the Bible. In fact, after three years of strengthening the Ephesian Church through the faithful preaching and teaching of Gods Word, Paul warned: Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things to draw away the disciples after them (Acts 20:28-30). Years after Paul had left Ephesus, Timothy served as their pastor and in his final letter before Paul was executed by Rome, he warned Timothy of difficult days aheaddays I believe we find ourselves in today:But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, slanderers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness although they have denied its power; avoid such people as these. For among them are those who slip into households and captivate weak women weighed down with sins, led on by various impulses, always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. (2 Tim. 3:17) The threat we face is also individual and internal! The desires of your own sinful flesh are the most immediate and present threat you face! We are warned: Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world (1 John 2:1516). This is why Paul pleaded with the Ephesian Christians to be diligent is how they lived and walked: Be careful how you walk, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil (Eph. 5:15-16).Although there are wolves who sneak in from the outside and there are real dangers from within, Paul wants us to understand the nature of those threats in Ephesians 6:10-13,Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist on the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. (Eph. 6:1013)The very real dangers we face as followers of Jesus includes wolves from the outside and our flesh and sin from within; however, our struggle is cosmic, and it is with the realm of the demonic! My hope and plan for the weeks to come is to not only help you appreciate just how real our struggle is, but to offer you practical ways you can remain strong, stand against the schemes of the devil, and resist the spiritual forces of darkness by standing firm in your faith as a Christian. We are at War!Today, I want to turn our attention to Ephesians 6:10, but before I do, you need to understand that if you are a Christian, you are engaged in a cosmic war! It is a war that Paul categorizes as a struggle. The Greek word Paul uses for struggle is palē (ά) which is a word used to describe what is involved in close hand-to-hand combat. In close hand-to-hand combat, you have no choice, for you must chose to fight against the one who wants to harm you, or you must surrender to slavery or even death. Before you were a Christian, you were, dead in your offenses and sins... (Eph. 2:1); according to Ephesians 2:2-3, you behaved and acted as one in agreement with the one who commands and orders the demonic realm against God and His creation: Among them we too all previously lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath (v. 3).Jesus said, I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it (Matt. 16:18). Out of Gods rich mercy, great love, and all-sufficient grace, you were rescued, ransomed, and redeemed through the cross of Christ. If you are a Christian, it is because God made you alive with Christ (Eph. 2:5). Through Jesus, God rescued you from your sin and Satan and according to Ephesians 2:6-7, He raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the boundless riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. What we learn from the first three chapters in Ephesians is that the battle over our souls has been decisively and categorically won by Jesus! However, the prince of the power of the air, the rulers, the powers, the world forces of darkness and the spiritual forces of wickedness want to do whatever they can to take you out by any means necessary! Martyn Lloyd-Jones rightly said, There is no grosser or greater misrepresentation of the Christian message than that which depicts it as offering us a life of ease with no battle and no struggle at all.... The first thing we must realize is that the Christian life is a warfare, that we are strangers in an alien land, that we are in the enemys territory.[1] According to Paul, this is a warfare that we are in, it is a warfare we have to engage, it is a warfare that is ongoing, and it is a warfare with demonic cosmic forces that are determined to fight until the very end. However, our strength to fight comes from a power that is not our own!Our War Requires Us to Be on High Alert In order to fight and to engage the spiritual war we find ourselves in, we must be alert, and we must be strong! The very first word is, Finally. After all that he has written about what it means to be a Christian and what it means to be the Church of Jesus Christ that have been filled with doctrinal exhortations, firm warnings, and great encouragements, the apostle saved what we read in Ephesians 6:10-18 for last not because it is least important but because of the great threat that faces Christs Church! The word finally is Pauls bugle call for the Christians to assemble for action! As Sam Storms observed in his book on spiritual warfare: There is never a truce or ceasefire. Satan takes no holidays. He observes no Sabbath rest. There may be times of greater or lesser intensity, but never a time to relax or let down your spiritual guard.[2]Notice where Ephesians 6:10 is placed! It is strategically and intentionally placed just after the section in Ephesians where Paul explains what a Christ-centered marriage looks like, how Christlikeness ought to be displayed in parent and child relationships, and how we can be Christ-like through our work. It was through the institution of marriage, one of the great gifts of God, that Satan attacked for the purpose of destroying the relationship Adam and Eve were created to enjoy with God and each other and how their sin affected their children and how they managed the earth through work. When Eve was tempted by the serpent while Adam stood and watched, their struggle was not only with flesh and blood, but with the demonic cosmic forces of evil! When Cain murdered Abel, his struggle was not only with flesh and blood, but with the demonic cosmic forces of evil, and it has been that way ever since! Do not miss how it was that the demonic cosmic forces of evil attacked Adam and his family. Satan did not tempt Adam and Eve while they were on high alert and actively engaged in the work of God, he tempted them while they were both idol and their spiritual senses were dull. When Cain decided to murder Abel, he increasingly became insensitive to the things that pleased God until he finally caved to the sin that God warned was lurking at the door of his heart, and instead of mastering it, he gave into his sin and murdered his younger brother (see Gen. 4:1-8). We will talk about this more when we look at verse 11 and how it is we can stand against the devils schemes, but for now I will say that you cannot expect to walk with wisdom or in a manor worthy of your calling as a born again follower of Jesus if you are not on high alert and ready for the kind of hand-to-hand combat that is always before you Christian! You may not be able to see the devil or his demonic hoards with your physical eyes, but as John Stott once wrote: Beneath the surface, an unseen spiritual battle is raging[3]Our War-Time Strength is From Gods MightNow, notice the urgency in the apostles language! First a command: Be strong (v. 10), then stand firm (v. 11), resist (v. 13a), stand firm (v. 13b), and then another command: Stand firm (v. 14). But how are we to be strong, how are we to stand firm, how are we to resist? We are to do it in the power of the God who raised Jesus from the grave! The Greek word Paul uses for strong is the same word he uses in Ephesians 1:19.[4] The point is that the source of our power does not come from within, but from an infinitely greater power source! Remember Pauls prayer for the Christian at the beginning of his epistle: I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the boundless greatness of His power toward us who believe. Then Paul uses the same language in Ephesians 1:19-20 that he uses in 6:10, consider the apostles carefully chosen words in 1:19-20 again: These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places... Our power comes from His might and nowhere else! It doesnt come from our talents, it doesnt come from our skills, it doesnt come from our education, and it doesnt come from how many verses of the Bible we fill our brains with; all those things are good, but they are not the place from where we draw our power! We have got to get this straight in our churches and especially at Meadowbrooke! We have seen several pastors fall recently, three of the men that come to mind have had such a profound impact upon my life such as Ravi Zacharias, Tony Evens, and just this week... Steven Lawson! I have the books these men have written on my bookshelves, I have listened to scores of their sermons, and their ministries have ended due to sexual sin! For five years Steven Lawson preached in his church and at huge conferences while maintaining an affair with a woman a third of his age. There have been many Christian song writers and worship leaders who have either renounced their faith in the name of deconstruction and we have sung their songs with the impression that they were motivated by God. It is possible to have a demonized or even a wolf in sheeps clothing lead in our worship services and assume his motivations are pure when instead they are predatory. Oh how easy it is to trust in skill, and charm, and beauty, through what we see and feel and assume the power is from God when it is not from Him. How easy it is to become idol while our spiritual senses dull to the onslaught of the demonic! In Ephesians we are told repeatedly where it is that our source of power must come from if we are going to, walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called (4:1). Notice where it is that Christ is seated in Ephesians 1:21-23; He is seated, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and made Him head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all (Eph. 1:21-23). Do you know what that means? What it means is that He has conquered the rulers, powers, the world forces of this darkness, and the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places! They are all under the heel of His omnipotent foot! All the might you will ever need to be strong, to stand firm, and to resist in the evil day is in Jesus. However, if you are not abiding in Jesus, if you are not pursuing Jesus, if He is not to your life and breath, then you will grow dull in your spiritual senses! If Gods word is not the truth you are putting into your spiritual veins, if you are feeding your mind and soul more of what this world wants you to consume, if you are more interested in playing than you are in preparing to stand before Jesus... then you are easy prey for the enemy to devour! If you are a Christian, you have been chosen by God to be holy and blameless in Jesus (1:4-6). If you are a Christian, you have been redeemed through the blood of the Lamb of God for another city God has for you (1:7-12). If you are a Christian, you have been sealed by Gods Holy Spirit and have all of the Holy Spirit you will ever need to live in the kind of divine power to stand firm against the devil and his schemes (1:13-14). How much of your heart does the Father have? How much of your allegiance does the Son have? How much of your life does the Holy Spirit have? What changes can you make to be more alert and to stand in the strength of almighty God? Permit me to make some recommendations:Cut back on the time you spend on social media or what have on your watch list, and read your Bible more...Instead of being consumed by secular music, listen more to praise music during the week. Music is in our DNA, and it is something we will enjoy throughout eternity, so start filling your mind and heart with praise now.Pray! If you are not used to praying, start by praying the Lords Prayer (Matt. 6:9-13; Luke 11:2-4). If you only pray a few minutes out of day, add another five minutes to your prayer time. If you do not have a time scheduled to pray, find a time in the day and spend 5,10,15, 30 minutes, or more in prayerful conversation with God.Finally, remember that your strength is not in your ability, skills, or talents when it comes to what God wants to do in your world. Our strength must come from Gods might! Maybe instead of rushing for a solution to fix whatever is the biggest problem you are facing in your life, you should do what we read in Psalm 46:10-11,Stop striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted on the earth. The Lord of armies is with us; The God of Jacob is our stronghold.[1] Martyn Lloyd-Jones, The Christian Warfare: An Exposition of Ephesians 6:10-13, (Grand Rapids, MI: BakerBooks; 1976), p. 21.[2] Sam Storms, Understanding Spiritual Warfare (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Reflective; 2021), p. 290.[3] Tony Merida, Exalting Jesus in Ephesians (Nashville, TN: Holman Reference, 2014), 175.[4] In Ephesians 1:19, Paul uses dynamis (power); in 6:10, he uses endynamoō (strong). Both words are from the same root. Patrick Sookhdeo, his wife Rosemarie, and two members of the United Kingdom board of trustees—Caroline Kerslake and Prasad Phillips—were suspended from leadership until an independent investigation can be completed.
While the U.S. affiliate and fundraising arm of Barnabas Aid, also known as Barnabas Fund, has a different CEO than the U.K. affiliate, the Sookhdeos, Kerslake, and Phillips are all listed as board members of Barnabas Aid in the U.S.A.

What happened??
Warren:
Following whistleblower complaints earlier this year, some members of the board began raising questions about the management of the charity and charity funds.
The statement Barnabas Aid said it appears the Sookhdeos were among those who failed to comply with the internal policies and created a “toxic work environment” that undermined the staff’s feeling that they could voice their concerns.
“In addition, we have also identified significant payments made to the founders (and to others close to them—including some Board Members/Trustees) which cannot be readily explained.
Ample opportunity has been provided to the founders to explain those transactions but sadly they have refused to cooperate,” the Barnabas Aid statement added.

After discussing various interpretations of the End Times, this series will continue in a basic premillennial understanding of eschatology. The central event - or series of events - to this interpretation of the End Times is the Tribulation, a 7 year period of hardship and judgement on the Earth that precedes the physical return of Christ. Just a reminder to hold your End Times theology loosely. We are living before these events and so there is an incredibly wide range of acceptable, orthodox positions one can hold. This episode opens with a tribute to Ravi Zacharias, who had recently died in late Spring 2020. This means that I had to add an addendum to my tribute, as much of the legacy of Ravi has been tarnished by revelations of his sexual predatory behavior. Do you really want to know what's in the Ark of God?
Welcome to the Daily Devo. I am Vince Miller.
This week, we are reading 1 Samuel 6. I've titled this chapter "From Confusion to Clarity."
In chapter 6, the Ark of God returns. The priests offer a sacrifice upon the return, but they make a fatal mistake:
And he struck some of the men of Beth-shemesh, because they looked upon the ark of the Lord. He struck seventy men of them, and the people mourned because the Lord had struck the people with a great blow. — 1 Samuel 6:19
One Quick Peek We're curious beings, aren't we?
I've been curious since my teens. I remember taking things apart to understand how they worked. But as I've grown older and wiser, I've learned there are lines and limits to curiosity. Sometimes curiosity pays off positively; other times, it brings severe consequences.
In our relationship with God, it's good to be curious about Him and His will in our lives. Yet, we must tread carefully when our curiosity leads to selfish thoughts, attitudes, or actions. God sets boundaries that shouldn't be crossed. When we defy these boundaries, we distance ourselves from Him and face the consequences.
Why Do The Priests Peek? Here's the big question: Why did these 70 priests of God dare to peek into the Ark? They knew better—they were explicitly instructed never to touch, open, or even look inside it. That's basic priestly training.
Their curiosity may have stemmed from eagerness to see if the Philistines took anything from the Ark, or perhaps it was their first chance to see it outside the Tabernacle. Whatever the reason, their disobedience cost them their lives.
What Was In The Box? So, are you curious? Do you want to know what was in the Ark of God? I know you do. According to Hebrews 9:4, the Ark contained three objects:
They represented the rule, protection, and provision of God.
Hard Lessons for Men of The Cloth God's boundaries apply to all. His justice doesn't spare insiders who defy His will. Recent events involving prominent spiritual leaders prove this point. For example, consider James McDonald, Ravi Zacharias, Bill Hybels, and the latest, Tony Evans.
For some, this is heartbreaking, but it is simply a strong reminder.
Curiosity within God's will is safe and beneficial, but beyond it lies danger.
So be curious, but don't be tempted to step outside the will of God.
#CuriosityAndConsequences, #GodsBoundaries, #WisdomInObedience
Ask This: 1. How can we maintain a healthy balance between curiosity and obedience in our daily walk with God? 2. Reflecting on times when curiosity led to positive outcomes versus negative consequences, how can we apply lessons from the priests' mistakes to our own lives today?
Do This: Be appropriately curious.
Pray This: Father, help me discern between healthy curiosity that seeks Your will and selfish curiosity that leads astray. Guide me to honor Your boundaries, knowing Your wisdom protects and guides me always. Amen.
Play This: Every Direction.

In this episode, Mike sits down with Matthew Mittelberg, an apologist currently with Apologetics, Inc. Matthew brings a unique perspective to the conversation, having formerly worked at Ravi Zacharias International Ministries and grown up as the son of noted author and apologist Mark Mittelberg. With close family ties to Lee Strobel, whom he affectionately refers to as "Uncle Lee," Matthew's upbringing was deeply rooted in a community that not only believed in the truths of Christianity but also emphasized the importance of conveying these truths through both words and actions. The discussion centers on the crucial role of an embodied faith in effectively reaching and impacting the next generation.Mike and Matthew explore how living out one's faith authentically can inspire and engage young people in a way arguments alone cannot. However, they also delve into how apologetics, the discipline of defending Christianity through systematic argumentation and discourse, can be a vital tool in this process. By providing clear, rational reasons for faith and demonstrating its relevance in everyday life, Matthew argues that apologetics can equip individuals to communicate their beliefs more effectively and foster a more profound spiritual engagement among youth. This episode offers practical insights and strategies for anyone looking to use apologetics to nurture and sustain faith in a skeptical and often indifferent world. Day 165
Today’s Reading: Galatians 3
The letter to the Galatians is a call back to reintroducing the simplicity of the gospel message. It’s so simple that the formula has not been changed for five thousand years. And Galatians 3 tells us something epic and answers a question I have been asked many times: how did the Old Testament people become believers or Christians?
How did those in Genesis through Malachi have a relationship with God?
This may surprise you, but there’s no better New Testament letter to answer this than the book of Galatians. Paul says this:
Even so Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness. Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham. The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “All the nations will be blessed in you.” So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer. (Galatians 3:6-9)
These words are incredible. Paul associates so many New Testament salvation words with Abraham: Abraham believed; reckoned to him as righteous; God preached the gospel to Abraham; and finally called the believer.
Wow! This sounds like a Christian from the book of Acts not someone from 2000 BC, from the book of Genesis. Abraham the believer is a great name for the Old Testament patriarch.
How did an Old Testament person become a Christian? Simple. The same way we do. They were called upon to believe God—just as the book of Romans tells us that belief in God makes us righteous, or reckoned.
I love that word. Reckoned is a word Paul uses for the result of belief. The word means to impute. To make it even simpler, it is to put into an account. It’s like watching a spy movie and the characters are electronically sending huge sums of money to a Cayman Island account. This is what happens to those who believe in God: God sends righteousness to your account. Righteousness is not from stringing together a bunch of obedient successes and good days in being a Christian. Righteousness is imputed, reckoned, sent to our account, like to a Cayman Island offshore account. It’s something huge . . . righteousness.
All because we do one thing: believe in God.
That’s the gospel of the New Testament and that was the gospel of the Old Testament, which Abraham had preached to him.
Jonathan Whitefield was preaching to coal miners in England, and he asked a man, “What do you believe?”
“Well, I believe the same as the church,” the man said.
“And what does the church believe?”
“Well, they believe the same as me.”
Seeing he was getting nowhere, Whitefield said, “And what is it that you both believe?”
“Well, I suppose the same thing.”
That’s elusive belief. The question we should ask is, what did Abraham believe? I think Hebrews 11:6 tells us: “Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.” The writer of Hebrews says that we must believe that He is. That means Abraham believed all that God disclosed about Himself. That God is exactly who He said He is.
Why is that important?
First, it’s not making up things about God’s character but believing what He reveals. And for Abraham, it started with “God is one, not many,” like the polytheistic cultures he was surrounded by. Abraham did what Martin Luther King Jr. expressed: “Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”
Apologist Ravi Zacharias said: “We have a right to believe whatever we want, but not everything we believe is right.” As time progressed all the way to the book of Galatians, it still holds true that we must believe that He is. God has shown us a lot more. He has shown more of Himself through His Son Jesus. Belief is based on God disclosing Himself, revealing Himself, and the pinnacle of God’s self-revelation is in the Episode: https://260journey.com/how-did-the-old-testament-people-become-christians/

We've been through this before. So many times. Is there anything left to learn, or are we just unwilling to learn it? Perhaps a recent study holds the answers.
Mike Pilavachi is the latest 'celebrity Christian' whos eministry has been tainted by scandal. In Part 2 of Beer Christianity's look at our icons with cracked halos, we ask why, with all the information we have gained over decades of scandal, we never seem to be able to prevent good ministries from hiding bad behaviours or protecting bad people.
One possible answer is out desire to shirk moral responsibility in favour of loyalty and obedience to a strong leader. Another is a little more complex and we examine it in a little detail in this episode.
The NGO Halo Effect tracks how moral superiority, moral justification and moral naivity in the third sector can lead to good organisations doing bad things. If we apply it loosely to churches, religious movements and para-church organisations from charities to events, we start to recognise a lot of ways in which the Mike Pilavachi, Ravi Zacharias and other Christian celebrity falls from grace may have gone on for so long.
As a lens for understandign the larger issue, we hear again from Matty Fearon of Mission Catalyst magazine, who shares his recommendations for avoiding future cover-ups, and we hear from Bible Society's Mark Woods on why we're unlikely to learn a damn thing. Spoilers: we kinda love kings. For some stupid reason.
But we maintain it's worth the Church and the ecosystem around it tryng to get better. It would be good for our witness and good for the world. Most importantly, it could prevent further harm being done in and by our communities.
Here's a link to the fascinating study, How Moral Goodness Drives Unethical Behavior: Empirical Evidence for the NGO Halo Effect that we quote at length. Jonty thinks recognising its findings and applying them to our cherished institutions could be a game changer in catching and stopping toxicity sooner.

Jonty's novel, Incredulous Moshoeshoe and the Lightning Bird, is not available in all good bookshops, but if you bought it and left a review that would probably make that more likely.
We don't really want to preach at you, but some people like to know what we believe. It's this: Jesus Christ is the Son of God and came to teach us a better way to be while reconciling us to God and each other in a way we could never do without Him. He also changed water into wine. Nice.

Mike Pilavachi has resigned from Soul Survivor and once again we are having that conversation. Why do beloved Christian leaders fall? And why do the people around themso often protect and enable their failings?
In this episode, we don't disect the ongoing Pilavachi investigation or jump to hasty condemnation, nor do we jump to his defence. Instead, we discuss what the limits of forgiveness might be, what cultural and structural factors might contribute to ongoing problematic behaviour and why some leaders become brands that are 'too big to fall' - until they do.
We also hear from people in the orbit of a previous and more upsetting scandal: that of Ravi Zacharias. Thanks to Matty Fearon of Mission Catalyst magazine and Johan Erasmus of Dialoog church for their contributions.
ALSO. We are acutely aware that on a podcast about a phenomenon mostly involving abuse of power by men, all our guests are men. This si a function of a few things, including: the people we know who are close to these events are also men - a reflection of church hiring perhaps; at least one woman we hoped to hear from decided to brief her husband to talk to us instead. We hope that the input from our listeners (who all appeared to be women this week) and the fact that we have one cis woman and one gender-curious on the host team makes up for that a little.

Day 123
Today’s Reading: Romans 6
There is probably not a better chapter in the New Testament that deals with the relationship between Christians and sin than Romans 6. That relationship is—there is no relationship. You have victory because sin is no longer in charge. There’s a new King on the throne of your heart.
C. H. Spurgeon was right when he said, “Sin murdered Christ; will you be a friend to it? Sin pierced the heart of the Incarnate God; can you love it?” We can’t be a friend to sin. We have a new friend and our new friend is now our King:
Do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace. (Romans 6:12-14)
“Do not let sin reign in your mortal body” (verse 12). The word "reign" is a word for a king or royal who is in charge of a nation and has the throne. Paul is saying that when you get saved, sin is dethroned from the throne of your heart. Now King Jesus sits as the sole authority and He has no rivals. There may be fighters, but no rivals. There may be a coup here and there, but no one ultimately defeats this new King.
Sin may be present and sin may fight, but sin will never again be king of your heart. Just because sin fights doesn’t mean it is in charge. Always remember that!
Our sin leaves us in a knot, and we need God’s help to unties it. That’s what happens at salvation. He unravels sin and gives us new life. He undoes the knot of sin. Yet humanity tries to redefine the very thing for which Christ died and set us free.
• Man calls it an accident; God calls it an abomination. • Man calls it a blunder; God calls it blindness. • Man calls it a defect; God calls it a disease. • Man calls it a chance; God calls it a choice. • Man calls it an error; God calls it an enmity. • Man calls it a fascination; God calls it a fatality. • Man calls it an infirmity; God calls it iniquity. • Man calls it a luxury; God calls it leprosy. • Man calls it liberty; God calls it lawlessness. • Man calls it a trifle; God calls it a tragedy. • Man calls it a mistake; God calls it madness. • Man calls it a weakness; God calls it willfulness.
Paul goes on to say in verse 13: “Do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.” This verse is important for our understanding of the new King in our hearts. Paul tells us three important things:
We surrender to a person. We do not surrender to an idea, a denomination, a church, Protestantism, or Catholicism. The Bible says, “present yourselves to God.” No church can fight off sin like King Jesus.
We surrender for a purpose. Paul said, “as instruments” not as ornaments. The purpose in our surrender, it leads to something—righteousness. What are the instruments? The members of our bodies. We surrender our minds, our hands, our creativity, our eyes—all to the King.
We surrender at a price. Don’t miss the part that says “as those alive from the dead.” There is something costly here. Jesus paid the price for our resurrection. As Ravi Zacharias said:
“Jesus Christ did not come to make bad people good, but to make dead people alive.” We were dead and King Jesus gave us new life. Something sin never did. Listen to what R. C. Sproul reminds us about sin: “I have committed many sins in my life. Not one of my sins has ever made me happy.”
Our new King brings joy to us and tells us sin is not in charge anymore. The Message translation captures the concept of sin being rendered powerless when Jesus comes into our lives particularly well:
You must not give sin a vote in the way you conduct your liv Episode: https://260journey.com/theres-a-new-king-on-the-throne/

Today, Pastor Dickie explains that atheism cannot provide answers for the meaning of life. I point out that it's actually way easier for an atheist to find meaning in their life than it is for a Christian.

Message Date: Sunday, May 28, 2023
Scripture: 1 John 2:15-29
Speaker: Mike Mileski
The death of Tim Keller last week gave us pause to reflect on a life well-lived for Jesus, and why it seems like the exception these days. Why are there so many false teachers? Where do they come from? What are the small compromises one must make along the way to become a false teacher, a counterfeit, an 'antichrist' later in life? Could it happen to us?
In this message we considered four temptations that every Christian faces in the course of his/her faith: The temptation to love the world, the temptation to quit when things become difficult, the temptation to 'improve' the Gospel, and the temptation to be seen as important. To the degree that we're prepared for these, we'll be able to fight back, persevere, and be saved.
This is John's promise: those who persevere will stand before Jesus "confident and unashamed."

Show Notes
Josh Parikh is an old friend of ours having contributed to our Discussion Groups over many years as a Christian Apologist who has always thought deeply about the issues and maintained intellectual integrity. He has been on a journey, especially having engaged with Biblical scholarship. This has overlapped with his time at Oxford University and continued since graduating. Like many, he has remained a Christian and has moved in a ‘progressive’ direction. Josh recently gave a talk “A Tumultuous Period in Apologetics?” to the “Unbelievable Christian and Skeptic Discussion Group” in London, and we were eager to have him share that material on the show. Josh sees a crisis not just in the scandals such as with Ravi Zacharias but at a root conflict between the aims of apologetics in conservative Christianity and the commitments involved in genuine scholarship.
We had so much to talk about that we will need 2 shows to benefit fully from Josh’s wisdom.

Does there come a point where we stop listening to preachers? The recent revelations about Billy Graham lead to a conversation about 'imperfect heroes'--like Martin Luther King, Jr.--and teachers whose hidden lives undermine their ministry, like Ravi Zacharias and Karl Barth. Then, should children be able to choose their gender?, and Brian and Aubrey pack a theoretical time capsule from 2023 for their grandchildren.

Day 64Today’s Reading: Luke 20Not everyone who asks you a question wants an answer or wants the truth. Listen to one of the most profound questions ever asked. It was a question someone asked of Jesus, and the one who asked it never stopped to hear the answer: “Pilate said to Him, ‘What is truth?’ And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews . . .” (John 18:38).Pilate asked the question and did not even give the One who is called “the truth” a moment to answer. I don’t know if he was really interested. Many times people ask questions, not for the answer, but to see what side you have taken. Their question is for exposure not for truth. In today’s reading, that is what Jesus faced three times. The religious were asking questions not to know the answer but to see what “side” He was on.Today in this hostile culture we are in, we face the same thing in our workplaces, college campuses, even the local coffee shops. Maybe we can take a page out of Jesus’ book, from His methods of dialoguing in a hostile environment.Let’s look at two of the three situations. Notice what was asked and then notice how Jesus responded:On one of the days while He was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders confronted Him, and they spoke, saying to Him, “Tell us by what authority You are doing these things, or who is the one who gave You this authority?” Jesus answered and said to them, “I will also ask you a question, and you tell Me: Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?” (Luke 20:1-4)They watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, in order that they might catch Him in some statement, so that they could deliver Him to the rule and the authority of the governor. They questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach correctly, and you are not partial to any, but teach the way of God in truth. Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” But He detected their trickery and said to them, “Show Me a denarius. Whose likeness and inscription does it have?” (Luke 20:20-24) Jesus did the same thing with every ill-intentioned question. Remember, none of these religious people were asking Jesus to hear the answer but to discover what side He was on. Or as apologist Ravi Zacharias explains that every question comes with an assumption. That is why C. S. Lewis said, “Nothing is so self-defeating than a question that has not been fully understood.”Let’s take a page from Jesus. What did He do in each situation? Jesus asked questions to the questioner. He questioned the question. Many ask questions but never have been questioned themselves.I have seen preachers on television being asked these kinds of questions—from hosts on the Today show to Oprah to reporters on CNN and Fox News. Every time they are asked a question as Jesus was, they answer it and get in trouble. Instead of doing what Jesus did, some of these pastors wrongly assessed that these people wanted an answer, which wasn’t true. They wanted to know their side, so the attack could commence.Answer the question when people want an answer. Question the question when people want to fight.Jesus would not let them catch Him, but His questions put them on the defensive. One of the most explosive questions Christians are asked today: What is your view of same-sex marriage? Let’s take a page from Jesus: What question can we ask in return that would turn the tables?Maybe something like this: Do you believe in God? Do you think this is something important enough that He has something to say about it? Would you believe in God even if He contradicts what you think? So where would you find out what God thinks?Someone said, “Most people dismiss the Bible not because it contradicts itself but because it contradicts them.”The next time someone asks you a question, take a page out of Jesus’ playbook and ask a question in return. GUEST: PASTOR TRAVIS ALLEN, Grace Church (Greeley, CO)Julie Roys calls herself a Christian investigative reporter, focusing on abuse and corruption within the Evangelical church. Hailing from Chicago, her reporting has led to prominent pastors and Christian leaders like James MacDonald, Bill Hybels, Ravi Zacharias, and Mark Driscoll being discredited and removed. For the past several years, she has set her sights on John MacArthur, one of the most respected pastors of the last half century. MacArthur has pastored Grace Community Church in Los Angeles for 54 years and oversees a ministry of worldwide influence including, The Master’s Seminary, The Master’s University, and Grace to You, a daily radio program. In column after column, Roys has accused Grace Community Church and John MacArthur of protecting male abusers of women in the church and shaming the women they allegedly abused. These are serious allegations. The recurring thread in her accusations is that MacArthur’s complementarianism—the biblical doctrine based on 1 Corinthians 11:3; 14:33-34, Ephesians 5:22-24, 1 Timothy 2:12, 1 Peter 3:1-7, Colossians 3:18-19, and other passages that God has prescribed men only to be pastors and elders in the church and hold headship in the home—has led to abuse of women and excessive discipline of children.Last week in Part 1 we looked into who Julie Roys is and what her beliefs are. We also examined two of the prominent counseling cases at Grace Community Church she has highlighted as proving abuse. This week in Part 2, Pastor Travis Allen will join us. He currently pastors Grace Church in Greeley, CO but was formerly an elder at Grace Community Church and the managing director of Grace to You. He was at the church when the David and Eileen Gray counseling case took place.Travis will discuss a recent Christianity Today article that featured an interview with the one elder out of 37 at Grace Community Church who sided with Julie Roys. Travis will also explain how these attacks on MacArthur are a battle in a larger war.To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/693/29 Episode: https://www.oneplace.com/ministries/the-christian-worldview/listen/how-julie-roys-attempted-takedown-of-john-macarthur-is-a-battle-in-a-larger-war-part-2-1040915.html

« I Used to Think » a été réalisé avec Melo. MAPPA has become one of the biggest powerhouses in the modern anime landscape, growing rapidly from a studio founded for creative freedom to a corporate site for large franchises. Ionatan and Ravi discuss the studio's varied productions as well as its reputation for tight schedules, egregiously low pay for animators, and a culture of overwork that is, unfortunately, representative of the state of the anime industry today. Then, they pick their top five MAPPA anime, from battle shounen like 'Chainsaw Man' and 'Jujutsu Kaisen' to shoujo and josei adaptations like 'Banana Fish' and 'Kids on the Slope.'

The BJP on Tuesday lashed out at Rahul Gandhi for his criticism of the state of democracy in India and the RSS from Britain, claiming it is its clear conviction that he is completely in the grip of "Maoist thought process through his minions" and also "anarchist elements". Addressing a press conference, former Union minister and BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad also expressed his party's disapproval of Gandhi "misusing the forum of British parliament" to spread shameful lies and unfounded claims, and said there needed to be a "proper rebuttal". He accused the Congress leader of shaming India's democracy, polity, Parliament, judicial system and strategic security from a foreign land. Gandhi told British parliamentarians in London on Monday that functioning microphones in the Lok Sabha are often silenced against the Opposition. During an event organised by veteran Indian-origin Opposition Labour Party MP Virendra Sharma within the House of Commons complex, he said opposition parties in India are often not allowed to debate issues in Parliament. Prasad said Gandhi has forgotten all parliamentary norms, political propriety and "democratic shame" by criticising Indian from abroad. The BJP leader also accused Gandhi of seeking the intervention of Europe and the US in India and said he has gone against the consensus in India against any interference in its internal affairs by foreign powers. Prasad sought reactions from Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and his predecessor Sonia Gandhi on Rahul Gandhi's "utterly irresponsible" statements and whether the opposition party disowns them or not. The BJP leader also slammed Rahul Gandhi for his condemnation of the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh), claiming that the Hindutva organisation has been serving the society and the nation. I’m pleased to announce that I’m introducing a new podcast and starting a YouTube channel. I’m calling it “Newcomer” — like this newsletter.
What can I say? It’s a good name.
The show kicks off tomorrow with an interview with LinkedIn co-founder and Greylock partner Reid Hoffman.
Hoffman just stepped off OpenAI’s board of directors. We talk about that decision, AI sentience, the PayPal mafia, cloud compute spending, Joe Biden’s presidency, and much more. I think you’ll enjoy the episode.
For the new show, I’ve got interviews lined up with investor and former top Tesla and Lyft executive Jon McNeill and with Lightspeed Venture Partners founder and managing director Ravi Mhatre.
I’m also going to publish some of the conversations from the Cerebral Valley AI Summit on the podcast feed and YouTube channel.
In that vein, I’m happy to announce that Clem Delangue, the CEO of Hugging Face, and Amjad Masad, the CEO of Replit, are scheduled to sit down with me together at the Cerebral Valley AI Summit on March 30. (Founders and CEOs can still apply this week to attend the one-day conference in Hayes Valley. We’ve been overwhelmed with investor interest to attend.)
Newcomer, the weekly podcast, will post on Tuesdays. I’ll send it to newsletter subscribers and publish it to Apple podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube. Email me with guest ideas.
I’ll publish summaries of the episodes here in the newsletter. Over time, I might add bonus sections for paying Newcomer subscribers.
With this podcast, I’m going solo, interviewing top investors and founders. I’m bringing my sensibility as someone who understands the inside-story of Silicon Valley but who is happy to poke and prod as to why the tech world operates like it does.
I want to thank automated security and compliance platform Vanta for being the launch sponsor for the Newcomer podcast. You may remember Vanta CEO Christina Cacioppo from her appearance on the second episode of my old podcast Dead Cat. She’s been an early believer in my audio efforts! Excited to have Vanta on board.
If you’re interested in sponsoring the podcast, reach out.
For fans of my old podcast Dead Cat, give the new podcast a try. It will be arriving via the same podcast feed. The Newcomer podcast shouldn’t be so much a revolution as an evolution. Yes, my former co-host Tom Dotan is off skewering Marc Benioff for the Wall Street Journal. I’m on my own. It will give me more time to ask the hard questions and listen to the guests’ replies. I’m going to try to talk about the media less and the business of tech more. But it will be the same probing podcast that you’ve come to love.
To get new episodes, subscribe to this newsletter, sign up to receive the podcast on Apple, and subscribe to the Newcomer YouTube channel. I’d definitely appreciate some positive reviews as I get this thing going. Like, comment, subscribe, and all that.
See you in your feeds tomorrow!

Sara talks to storytelling coach and consultant, Ravi Rajani, in this week’s episode of Prospecting on Purpose. In addition to reviewing Ravi’s least favorite Disney character, the two discuss the power of story when it comes to effective selling. Storytelling isn’t just customer success stories, it is inspiring stories to get a prospect to take action.
The two spend their time discussing the vital components required for successful story-selling and the framework to craft specific stories using Ravi’s ACORN checklist. Additionally, they discuss ways to elevate ourselves in the eyes of our customer by embracing our own stories.
It’s a fun episode and reminds us that we’re sales professionals, and we’re storytellers.

Two months in to the most far-right government in Israel’s history, Palestinians are seeing their rights evaporate while the media - both Israeli and international - underplay the Palestinian plight.

On our radar:
Nearly a month after the earthquake that killed more than 50,000 people across Turkey and Syria, the clampdown continues on critical reporting and anything else the Turkish government deems problematic. Producer Meenakshi Ravi reports on how extensive the crackdown has been.
Pakistani journalism in crisis:
The Pakistani government is facing trouble on multiple fronts - political, economic, and on security. For the country’s media, things have come to a state where the incentives not to do the journalistic job are often greater than the motivators to actually do it.

In an epilogue to our Off Season Chats, we bring a very special roundtable discussion that we led as part of our first collaboration with Rasabodhi Arts Foundation for its 2023 festival EVAM. We co-hosted a panel discussion with six brilliant classical dancers from around the world. Our in-depth conversation was recorded on January 30, and it covers a wide range of topics especially relevant for Indian classical dance in the diaspora, including communities and dance spaces, sustainability and funding, as well as opportunities and hopes for building a new dance future.
We’ve edited the conversation for length and clarity, but you can watch the entire conversation on Rasabodhi Arts Foundation's Facebook page. You can also find our interview with Rasabodhi founder Keerthana Ravi on episode 1 of Off Season Chats. EVAM 2023 will be available for viewing through March 7 - you can purchase your tickets on Tikkl.

Deconstruction is on the rise throughout Christianity in our day; people who have started to pick apart beliefs they once held or a relationship with Christ they seemingly once had and now claim to not be Christians anymore. As believers, we need to know how to kindly, compassionately, and thoughtfully answer these questions not only for their souls but for our own as well.
In part two of this three-part series, Peter and Aaron respond to and discuss Rhett McLaughlin's video Rhett’s Spiritual Deconstruction. Rhett, and his co-host Link, are the very popular media personalities behind Good Mythical Morning and Ear Biscuits. Both claim to be former Christians who have deconstructed and walked away from their faith.
This week, Peter and Aaron discuss:

In this episode the pastors respond to the report that was recently released, detailing the investigation into reports of sexual abuse by the late apologist Ravi Zacharias. How should Christians respond to this news? What should pastors and other Christian leaders do to avoid falling into similar sins? These are some of the questions addressed in this podcast.Below are a couple of other helpful resources on this sad topic:Ravi Zacharias and the Judgment of GodEvaluating Our Responses to the Ravi Zacharias Scandal

In February of 2012, I began a blog sharing personal stories of my experience at an abusive church my family had left. I did this after discovering that the negative reviews I had posted about this church on Google Reviews had been removed.
Within weeks after starting the blog, my former pastor and church (Chuck O’Neal and Beaverton Grace Bible Church) sued me and four other former members, including my adult daughter, for defamation. Their lawsuit asked for $500,000 in damages. My story went viral, beginning with this news report.
Since winning the lawsuit in July 26, 2012, I have continued to blog about spiritual abuse, how to recover from it, and note disturbing practices in churches/organizations, some of which can lead people to question their faith or even abandon their faith. Although now closed for commenting, the original blog can still be found here.
Many have asked if my whole story in one place. My story has been written as memories and experiences come to mind, so it is interspersed throughout the blog, but here is a blog post with a compilation of articles where you may find important parts of my story.
If you are interested in reading the details of the lawsuit and commentary, Brad Sargent compiled the whole story, related news articles, interviews, analysis of the case in the BGBC Archive. It was a very large undertaking (over 300 hours of work) and I’m so appreciative of Brad’s work in this as he and I believe my story is representative of so many others. We hope others can learn from our experience. Brad, too, is a spiritual abuse survivor and has been studying spiritual abuse systems for a few decades. He has a wealth of knowledge and I owe him the deepest gratitude.
Another part of my story is connected with the Christian Homeschool Movement – which includes ideologies and practices such as: full-quiver, courtship, Patriarchy, stay-at-home daughters, modesty/purity teachings (the church/pastor who sued me also was connected with the Homeschool Movement). As a long-time homeschooling mother (23+ yrs), I have seen how some of these practices, especially the ones that devalue/depersonalize women and girls, have caused great harm, physically, emotionally, financially, and spiritually. We have a big problem with abuse in our Christian churches groups, and this needs to change.
Additionally, I have worked as an investigative blogger covering high-profile cases such as breaking the clergy sexual misconduct cases of Ravi Zacharias and Tullian Tchividjian (grandson of Billy Graham). I worked full-time on the blog at least 40-60 hours a week from 2012, even while going back to school to get my Bachelor’s in Cyber Security. Since 2020, I started working full-time in cyber security and have taken a break from blogging, but have continued to be active on Twitter and also do interviews and speak on topics related to abuse in church.
A very sad and difficult part of my story is that the spiritual abuse I incurred was not just at church. It was also in my home under the guise of Patriarchy. I made the very difficult decision to divorce my husband of nearly 35 years last year (2020). Part of my advocacy work is encouraging and providing safe places for women to get the support they need if they are in a destructive marriage.
If you have suffered spiritual abuse, my heart really goes out to you. The recovery process is deeply personal and heart wrenching. After the media got hold of my story, I was inundated with hundreds of e-mails, and it took me several months to respond to all of them. I discovered that many self-proclaimed atheists were also victims of spiritual abuse. This breaks my heart and shows how damaging spiritual abuse really is.
If you would like help along the way, feel free to hang out on the blog. There are some amazing people (regular readers) and my co-blogger, Kathi, who understand and will encourage you. Feel free to jump in at any time on any blog post, regardless of the topic.
This place is for you!

The Conquering Truth
Most people might be shocked that we would even think to ask the question, but then again most people don’t actually know that much about him. In this episode, we take a look at the life of Martin Luther King Jr as a professing Christian. We look at his writings and teachings, and we compare them with the teachings of scripture and we look at his life as an expression of those beliefs. We also talk about how you deal with someone who said some good things, but who also is not who they present themselves to the world. We talk about how our idealization of men and women is dangerous and how easy it is to create idols that we have real trouble walking away from.

Do you squirm every time you listen to a reading from one of St. Paul’s letters calling women to be submissive to their husbands or to remain silent in church? In this episode of the Gloria Purvis Podcast, Gloria digs into the sticky “household codes” that St. Paul outlines in the New Testament with historian Beth Allison Barr, author of the bestselling book, The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth.
Gloria and Beth discuss the Christian Evangelical concept of complementarianism, which is distinguished from the Catholic notion of complimentarity found most especially in Pope John Paul II’s writings. While both terms speak to the differences between the sexes and posits these features as complimentary to one another, complementarianism reinforces a hierarchy of male headship and female submission that “ is simply historic patriarchy,” according to Barr.
One of the many dangers of a theology that centers men is evident in the sexual abuse crisis, where, “the emphasis is on protecting the male leaders instead of protecting the people they harm,” says Beth, and that “the sexual abuse coverup, which went on for decades, was concentrated in churches that lean towards more complementarian understandings.”
There’s also a connection between patriarchy and racism. Gloria notes Jordan Peterson’s “open hostility toward diversity, equity and inclusion” and Beth adds, “Once you buy into a theory of oppression, it is much easier to buy into other theories of oppression. Once you accept the idea that there is something innate about the way some people are born, that makes them able to hold leadership in a way that other people cannot, it makes it much more easy for you to argue even further that not only does it have to do with sex, but maybe it also has to do with skin color.”

Title: Pure and UndefiledText: James 1:26-27FCF: We often struggle with the place of works in our salvation.Prop: True religion that is blameless before God lives out the law of liberty, so we must live out the law of liberty. Scripture Intro:[Slide 1] Turn in your bible to James chapter 1. After a long holiday season with several special messages, special Sundays, Special services – it is nice to get back to a normal worship service. And part of that is settling back into our normal book study. Every book in the bible seems extraordinarily relevant to us though we are several years from them being written. James seems to be especially relevant though. Many are in times of trial right now. They do need encouragement and they do need care. But counseling them to count it as joy must be part of that counsel. It may not be all of it. In fact, it probably shouldn’t be all of it. But if you never edify a believer to count their trial as joy in the midst of it – you are failing them in a big way. Set the word of God loose and see what He will do with it! To a certain degree of design we left James at exactly the time we should have. That may seem odd to say since we stopped before concluding chapter 1. However, what is said in the remaining two verses will serve both to remind us of what we spoke of last, and to push us on toward what James will say in the rest of the letter. Let me briefly summarize all that we’ve seen in chapter 1 thus far. James, the half-brother of Jesus, only converted after his brother was raised from the dead, now leads the church in Jerusalem. Nevertheless, through persecution many Jewish believers have fled to various parts of the Roman empire, where they are looked at with suspicion and even oppressed because they live so much differently than the pagans around them. Then they hear a message that gives them some sense of false peace. Justification is by faith alone without any works. Therefore, we can live however we want as long as we believe. The error of this teaching is borne from those who twisted Paul’s teaching. So, James has his hands full when he writes to these scattered Jews. But what does he say? Where would he even begin to correct AND encourage them? Consider it as pure joy when you encounter trials of all kinds. Because God is using those to perfect your faith. He is making you into someone who lacks nothing. What follows is a list of things they may (and being close to them James probably knew they did) lack. Do you lack wisdom? Wisdom to know God and be what God desires? Then ask God for it. Do you lack God’s perspective? Perspective on what? Well… Do you view wealth and status in this world as something important? Well, this is not how God sees the world. Do you view God’s character in suspicion as though he is the one tempting you? Remember that God is good and never tempts anyone. When you are drawn away, you are drawn away by your own lusts. In the midst of a trial do you see God as a good giver that is unfortunately not always able to help you? Stop! For God is only a giver of good gifts to His people which chief among them is His sovereign plan to give free grace to you and birth you out of death and darkness into light and life. And most recently – James addresses a particularly malicious lack of Godly perspective. And it is the perspective we often have… of ourselves. We often consider ourselves more highly than we should. To this James says – be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger. Listening means not only to listen to others, but to God also by hearing and doing the gospel. And that brings us to today. I am in James 1. I’ll begin reading in verse 22 just to pick up some context. I am reading from the NET which you can follow in the pew bible starting on page 1360 or in whatever version you prefer. Transition:There is much to see here today. Let’s dive in! I.) True religion that is blameless before God lives out the law of liberty, so we must control our speech.a. [Slide 2] 26 – If someone thinks he is religious i. James parallels his previous discussion about the person who was a hearer only and not also a doer of the Word. ii. In fact, this is more than a parallel, this is an application. iii. Before he spoke in illustrative and in theoretical senses. He discussed how such a person is like a someone who sees his disheveled appearance in a mirror and walks away forgetting what he sees. But a person who keeps looking into the gospel will never forget and will be blessed in his obedience. iv. Well now James seeks to sharpen the stick as it were. v. You see they might have had a chance to wiggle free of James’ point from the previous section. vi. His audience may have escaped conviction by simply saying – well I know I am a sinner and God is working on me. I am not a hearer only! vii. But now James pounces. He has us right where he wants us, right where the Spirit of God has led him to attack a true deficiency in our faith. viii. And he begins by posing a hypothetical. ix. If someone – anyone - thinks he is religious. x. This doesn’t mean what many mean when they say that person is “religious” or they have “religion.” xi. Typically this is spoken by a non believing non religiously affiliated person to refer to pretty much everyone who is affiliated with a religion in almost any way. xii. What James means by “religious” is a person who is pious. A person who is devout. A person who is holy. xiii. Now it is important to note that James does not say if a person is religious… he says if a person thinks, is convinced, considers, or believes himself to be pious, devout or holy. xiv. He is not speaking of reality but of perception. xv. If this person perceives themselves in this way…b. [Slide 3] Yet does not bridle his tongue i. This person who perceives himself to be and has even convinced himself that he is holy is also one who does not control his tongue. ii. Even in English the idiom is clear – his tongue is like a horse with no bit in its mouth and no reins to guide it. It is used to say all manner of ungodly things. iii. This is not the first and it will not be the last time that James calls attention to the wild nature of our tongue and our need to control it. Indeed, throughout the letter, the control of our tongue remains a sure proof of our genuine faith. iv. And so, we have a person who truly believes himself to be holy but he is unable to control what he says. He speaks flippantly, abusively, deceptively, impatiently, arrogantly, ungratefully and/or unwholesomely – yet still believes himself to be pious, devout, righteous and holy. v. If such a person exists, what is true of that person?c. [Slide 4] And so deceives his heart i. The original language draws a difficult connection between this clause and the rest of the text. ii. But it seems that the NET and other translations point out the obvious conclusion especially as you compare this to verse 22. iii. A person who is a hearer and not a doer deceives themselves. Similarly, a person who thinks he is a holy person but cannot control his tongue is essentially a hearer only and therefore has deceived himself. iv. The significance of James using the term heart here rather than simply saying “himself” as he did before, could be significant. v. If this person truly believes that they are holy and yet cannot control what they say – they have deceived their heart… which is the very essence of their being. vi. Such a person is, perhaps, more lost than before they confessed Christ. They are, perhaps, farther away from true holiness than those who live in blatant sin. vii. Such was the state of the Pharisees who thought they were pious yet ignored justice and mercy. They were incensed when Christ said that prostitutes and thieves were closer to the kingdom than they were. viii. Yet James points out a similar picture here. It is truly a tragic man who is convinced he is holy and cannot bridle his tongue. It is tragic because he is delusional. ix. What is the only assessment we can make of a man who cannot control his tongue but has deceived himself to believe he is truly holy?d. [Slide 5] His religion is futile. i. Notice that James does not say – he has no religion. ii. James says his religion – his piety, his devotion, his holiness – is worthless.e. [Slide 6] Passage Truth: Although it is unspoken so far, the lesson in doctrine that James is teaching in these two verses is already obvious. He is defining true religion. What does it mean to be pious? What does it look like to be devout? What is a case study in true holiness? What does it mean to have humbly welcomed the gospel? What does it mean to be a doer and not a hearer only? James begins very simply by stating that they are not pious or devout because they believe they are pious or devout. Perceiving themselves to be a doer of the gospel does not make it so. They must live out the gospel in order to truly have a religion that is not worthless.f. Passage Application: So, his audience must move beyond their simple belief that they are a partaker of the gospel and move to actually living it. Specifically, by controlling their tongue.g. [Slide 7] Broader Biblical Truth: But do the Scriptures as a whole teach this? Do we find this in the rest of the bible? My friends there are countless examples of people who thought they were God’s child and it was not so. The entire Old Testament is full of Israelites who thought they were God’s chosen people and safe from His retribution for their sins. The Apostle Paul – A Jew – says that not all Israel is Israel. But today we’ve replaced the blood of Abraham with a list of truths we’ve decided to believe. And once we decide to believe them we simply need to be assured that we are safe and secure from God’s wrath. Men and women everywhere in this country live life like they always have but because they decided something when they were 5 years old at a VBS – they have convinced themselves they are going to heaven. James says that a character flaw as simple as a potty mouth can prove your decision to believe was worthless. h. Broader Biblical Application: What about the application here? Do we find it in the rest of the scriptures? We could go back to verse 19 where James said to be slow to speak. We could go to Psalm 34:13 where it says to make sure you don’t speak evil words or deceptive speech. Or psalm 39:1 where the psalmist says he will watch what he says and make sure he does not sin with his tongue. Or Psalm 141:3 where the psalmist begs YAHWEH to place a guard on his mouth. Or we could go to the gospels where The Lord Jesus said in His teaching that out of the heart the mouth speaks. My friends, if you are truly devout, truly pious, if you possess true religion that is blameless before God, you will beg like the psalmist for YAHWEH to put a guard on your mouth and protect the opening of your lips. CBC, we sin so much with our tongues. Not just crude words or vulgar jokes either. We disrespect, we cut, we impatiently chide, we grumble, we complain, we gossip, we stir up, we backbite, we brag, presume, and we blaspheme. My friends our tongues are a powder keg. We must keep it under lock and key lest a spark find its fuse and blow us to smithereens. We cannot possibly claim to be pious if our lips can never seem to stop spewing unholy sewage. Transition:[Slide 8] We saw a worthless, useless and fake religion in a person who thinks they are truly pious yet they cannot control their tongue. But this doesn’t answer the question of what a true and blameless religion would be. What would it look like to truly be devout? To be pious? To be holy? James begins that discussion in verse 27. II.) True religion that is blameless before God lives out the law of liberty, so we must help the desperate.a. [Slide 9] 27 – Pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this: i. James transitions to a contrasting kind of religion. ii. He begins with two adjectives. iii. Not a worthless religion but one that is pure and undefiled. iv. These two adjectives are so similar in their meaning that to try to find some meaningful point of difference would probably be a fool’s errand. v. This is no doubt a poetic or stylistic way of emphasizing and highlighting the difference in the two religions he has brought up. vi. This second religion is pure and undefiled. It is spotless. It is blameless. vii. Some preachers, taking the word “pure” to mean complete, have mistakenly assigned all of piety and holiness to these two specific components listed in verse 27. viii. But interpreting them together as spotless or blameless – we see that what follows in this verse are two specific examples of pure and undefiled religion not the sum total of it. ix. And notice - that this religion is blameless before The Holy God. x. Some translations have “before our God and Father” but the NET nails James’ meaning when it says God THE Father. xi. If God the Father, the Ancient of Days, He who sits on the throne of heaven, He who dwells in inapproachable light, He who is the Great I Am – if He determines this religion is blameless – then my friends, it is truly blameless. xii. So what is this religion that is blameless before Him?b. [Slide 10] To care for orphans and widows in their misfortune i. These two kinds of people are connected with the word “and” meaning we should probably not be focusing on their differences but rather on their similarity. ii. Just as “pure and undefiled” and “God and Father” were emphasizing the sameness rather than the difference – so here we are not looking at widows and orphans for their unique needs but rather for widows and orphans for their shared need. iii. And what is that need? iv. Their misfortune. v. Even if you knew nothing of the cultural context of this book you would know that widows and orphans had a unique need in that they were afflicted. They were oppressed. They were pushed down in their society. vi. In the 1st century Roman world there wasn’t a lot an orphan or widow could do to escape their situation. Widows could be left penniless and unable to earn a living for themselves. Orphans could be left with no benefactor to raise and educate them. vii. James’ point to his audience is simply this – living out the gospel, being a doer of the Word, having a truly blameless holiness, is considering the least, the helpless, the outcast, the oppressed – and doing what with them? viii. Caring. Feeding, clothing, healing, helping. The term here used is to visit or to meet. ix. Blameless holiness meets the needs of those who are unable to help themselves.c. [Slide 11] Passage Truth: James’ truth endures through the passage. And it is all the clearer. True and blameless religion before God lives out the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ. It looks into and obeys the law of liberty.d. Passage Application: And for his audience one specific way to live out the law of liberty is to care for those who are unable help themselves.e. [Slide 12] Broader Biblical Truth: Perhaps you were not satisfied that the scriptures speak often about people who think they are God’s people when they aren’t. What of Judas? What of Demas? What of Simon the Sorcerer? What of Alexander and Hymenaeus? What of those Peter spoke about who have known the way of righteousness only to turn back from it? What of Rob Bell, Josh Harris, Rhett and Link, Ravi Zacharias, and countless others without prominent names or followers. They have made a confession, made a decision, believed that Jesus is the Son of God who died for their sins and rose again the third day… but have walked away either by denying the faith or by living unholy lifestyles? Can this kind of faith, religion, piety… can it save them? No. They will join many in the last day who will say – I have done many wonderous things in your name Lord. And the Lord will say depart from me worker of lawlessness. I never knew you. It is important that we know Christ. But it is infinitely more important that He know us.f. Broader Biblical Application: But CBC… my friends. Hear me. All the names I listed before are those who are very obviously in possession of a religion that is worthless. But before we sit so high on our horse. Before we convince ourselves of better things. Do you help those who cannot help themselves? I’m not even talking about money, although that would be one application. Do you personally meet with and care for those who are voiceless, oppressed or afflicted? As we have studied the Old Testament in Foundations and even most recently in our study of Hosea and the Northern Kingdom… one of the main reasons that God is judging them is because… they oppressed widows and orphans. They did not alleviate their misfortune, they added to it. In Psalm 68 the psalmist calls the Lord a Father to the fatherless and an advocate for widows. In Isaiah God tells Israel to give the oppressed a reason to celebrate and to take up the cause of the orphan and defend the rights of the widow. Are we helping those who truly cannot help themselves? Transition:[Slide 13] But this is only one application of blameless holiness. James has one more before he gets to chapter 2. III.) True religion that is blameless before God lives out the law of liberty, so we must guard ourselves against the world.a. [Slide 14] And to keep oneself unstained by the world i. This second point is so very important in this context. ii. For many use this verse to defend some kind of social gospel where God’s people’s only concern is righting the wrongs in society. iii. But righting social wrongs cannot be the end of the discussion when we speak of blameless holiness. Truly it is a noble work and one near to the heart of Yahweh. But it is not the end. It wasn’t the end of what God desired for the Israelites and it is not the end of what God desires of His church. iv. Do you see how humility is emphasized throughout this passage? v. Blameless holiness is caring for the desperate. The ones Scrooge at the beginning of A Christmas Carol, would have said should “hurry up and die to decrease the surplus population.” vi. This is what living out the gospel looks like when pointed at the desperate – those in the humblest of states. vii. But when pointed at ourselves… what does living out the gospel look like? viii. It assumes that we are in constant danger of being defiled by the world in which we live. ix. The arrogant and prideful think they are always right. They defend their actions even when it is clear they are wrong. They justify themselves and find reason to be excused from fulfilling the law of God. And a less obvious expression of pride would be to live as if you could crawl through the soot without staining your pure white robes. x. Living out the gospel is not just caring for the desperate. It is recognizing how desperate we all are in that when we gaze into the wonderful law of liberty, we see that we are highly susceptible to being stained by all that surrounds us. xi. Seeing this through the lens of the gospel, we take great pains to keep, to protect, to guard ourselves from ungodly thoughts, words, philosophies, teachings, and practices. xii. We don’t just want to escape the judgment of the world… we don’t even want to walk into the kingdom smelling like it. xiii. That is what it means to obey the gospel. That is what it is to be a doer and not a hearer only. xiv. This is blameless holiness… to fight to keep ourselves from succumbing to the influence of a world that hates God. Our Father.b. [Slide 15] Passage Truth: Again, James’ point is inescapable. True religion that is blameless is one that lives out the law of liberty.c. Passage Application: And specifically for his audience, that means they must protect themselves from the world’s influence. d. [Slide 16] Broader Biblical Truth: If you do not yet accept and believe that good works must accompany faith if the faith is real – then at this point there is nothing I can say to change your mind. You are arguing with God… not me. I’ll let Him deal with you.e. Broader Biblical Application: But CBC, we must be so very careful with this proof of true holiness that is blameless. We must be so very careful. I don’t want to open up a huge discussion on Christian liberty. Nor do I want to be the arbiter of your family’s personal convictions. But here is what I know… it is very easy to set something in front of our eyes, in our ears, holding our hands, taking our time, taking our energy, taking our money, that is so infused, so saturated by the world and its ways that it drips with the sludge of hell. And we can watch and listen and touch and do and give and pay for all of this without getting stained. But my friends… James says to keep… to protect ourselves from being stained by the world. Do you walk about this life expecting that sludge to grow arms so it can get its filthy fingers on your white pure robes? Or do you sit on your couch and watch your TV passively unaware of – not just the obvious sex, drugs, and ungodly behavior – but are you unaware of the ideologies, philosophies, and values that are bombarding your defenses? Are your shields even up? Or are you so exhausted from a day of work that you have no energy left to protect yourself? If you walk through this life claiming to have blameless religion before God but are not walking circumspectly as if around every corner something from hell is out to get you… then you are a fool. And you are going to fall. Conclusion:[Slide 17] My friends… true religion that is blameless before God is this… You control what you say. You humbly help those who cannot help themselves. You walk circumspectly in the world. If you don’t have these… you have not received the gospel of Jesus Christ. If you do have these… but you realize, and probably have for some time that they have laxed and must be rekindled… then let today be the day you repent of idleness. Guard your words. Be careful what you say. Speak the words of life. Encourage, Edify, rebuke, correct, instruct, give thanks, praise the Lord! But let all manner of wicked speech be removed from you. Let not a single idle word pass through your lips. Certainly, this does not mean we must speak only the scripture or only that which is overtly biblical. But prattling on endlessly about things that won’t be in the Kingdom of God makes just as worthless of a religion as gossip, backbiting, slandering, or lying. Control your tongue. As a teacher I have grown accustomed to talking a lot. I take that teaching heart and wax eloquent often. One of the many lessons Eric Beauman has taught me… is to talk less. Choose my words more carefully. And speak only when necessary. I fail his advice often. But His advice is truly sound for it is found in the pages of James. Control your tongue Christian. And that includes the tongue at your fingertips too. Help those who cannot help themselves. Our nation has made a mockery of poverty. Many who are truly capable of helping themselves are allowed to do nothing and yet eat. The apostle Paul says that if a man does not work, he shall not eat. Yet there are those who truly are oppressed and afflicted. They are unable to claw their way out of whatever situation they are in. They are caught in an endless loop and are doomed to never get ahead. It is those whom we must help. We must be the voice of the voiceless. We must defend the rights of the oppressed. We must help those who are unable to help themselves. If I could be so bold… one class of people that I believe God would certainly have in this category… are the unborn. I can think of no other people group in this nation that are oppressed more with simultaneously less of a voice than the unborn. I would go so far even to say that if you fight to keep this people group oppressed and afflicted, regardless of your reasons… there is no way you can have a true religion that is blameless before God. You have deceived your heart. Let me be clear on this matter in that I do not see it as a political issue. Whether it is legal or illegal in this culture to kill unborn children is not abundantly relevant to what I am saying today. Certainly, defending their cause would include fighting for it to be illegal to kill them – but even if tomorrow it was illegal to kill the unborn, our fight would only just be beginning! Why? Because mothers would still go into alleys and murder their unwanted children. If we fight for the cause of the voiceless our fight doesn’t end when it is illegal to oppress them. It ends when they are no longer oppressed. And friends that only truly ends, when they are released from their spiritual father… Satan. Finally, we must walk circumspectly. My friends the devil prowls this world seeking his next victim. And although we who are truly God’s children have nothing to fear from him… the reason we have nothing to fear is because God’s true children when they read what James says here, to protect themselves from being stained by the world… THEY LISTEN TO HIM! True believers bow to the Word of God. How long can you play with the sludge before you get a black spot on your white robes? Psalm 101:3 says “I will set no worthless thing before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me.” Perhaps this verse should rest on top of our computers or phones or TVs. True religion that is blameless before God lives out the law of liberty. We love God and the things of God which means we obey God. What kind of religion do you have before God? A worthless one or a blameless one?

28 Odpovedal im: Človek nepriateľ to urobil. Opýtali sa sluhovia: Či teda chceš, aby sme ho šli povytŕhať? 29 On odpovedal: Nie!
– – Prečo spolu až do žatvy? Lebo navzájom na seba vplývajú. Lebo zmena je možná. – – Keď dnes ďakujeme Pánu Bohu za prežitý rok, ďakujeme nielen za stretnutia s dobrom, ale aj so zlom. Uvedomujeme si, ako blízo vedľa seba rastie dobro a zlo, ako na seba vplývame. Myslíme si, že z kúkoľa nebude pšenica, ani z vlka baranina… No prišiel náš Pán, Ježiš Kristus, a povedal: A bude! Veď preto som prišiel! Ibaže to niečo stojí: musí rásť oboje spolu – dobro aj zlo. Zažijete síce veľa utrpenia, ale koniec je úžasný. V deň žatvy zistíte, že niet čo viazať a hádzať do ohňa. Že to nie je možné? No potom by nemal šancu nikto z nás. Nehovorme len o tom, koľko zla je vo svete, ale hovorme radšej (a to hodne nahlas) aj o tom, že Ježiš je medzi nami – v nás. A o rok uvidíme ten rozdiel! Nielen okolo nás, ale aj v nás. Zmena je možná! Ježiš je zmena! Pozýva nás k spolupráci, aby sme o rok neboli zahanbení.
Modlitba: Pane náš, daj nám silu žiť obidvom spolu! Amen.

Warren Smith and Natasha Smith
On today’s special year-end program, Natasha and I will countdown the Top 10 stories of 2022.
That’s right. We’ll start with #10, and work our way to #1.
But before we get started, here are a few things you should know.
The first thing I’ll say is that we have organized this list by the number of page views it got on our site. That doesn’t necessarily mean they are the most important stories of the year. But I have a high degree of trust in our readers, and I think that all the stories on this list are important for one reason or another.
I also want to mention that we published nearly a thousand stories this year, and our website got about two-and-a-half million page views. We had nearly 500 stories that got at least a thousand page views. But the stories on this list are at the next level. Every story that I’m going to mention today got at least 10,000 page views during the year, and our #1 story got more than 20,000 page views.
We’ll be posting the Top 25 stories of the year today at the MinistryWatch website. That list includes stories about Rick Warren, Jerry Falwell Jr., Hillsong, and Ravi Zacharias International Ministries. Important stories that got a lot of attention in 2022.
Also, I’d like to point out that the diversity of stories on this list – longer thought pieces, lists curated from our database, and breaking news – are perhaps the best representation I could share of both the diversity of stories we do here at MinistryWatch – and of your tastes as readers and listeners.
And that takes me to this bit of what I hope you will forgive, and this some shameless self-promotion as we approach year-end.
We couldn’t bring you the stories we’ve talked about today without your help. We take no money from the ministries we cover. We don’t accept advertising. We don’t have one of those frustrating paywalls. Our content is completely free.
It’s free, but it’s not cheap. And December is the most important month of the year for our fundraising efforts. So if you are thinking about a year-end gift to MinistryWatch – why wait until December 31. You can take some of the drama out of the process by making a donation today.
Just go to www.MinistryWatch.com and hit the donate tab at the top of the page. It will take only a minute, and your gift will have a significant impact on the work we do here.
The producers for today’s program are Rich Roszel and Jeff McIntosh. We get database and other technical support from Stephen DuBarry, Emily Kern, Rod Pitzer, and Casey Sudduth. Writers whose stories made this special year-end list include: contributed to today’s program include Bob Smietana, Phil Cooke, Barry Bowen, and Kim Roberts – all of whom had one story on this list. Izaiáš 35,1-10
1 Radovať sa bude púšť i suchý kraj, jasať bude step a kvitnúť, ako narcis bude prekvitať a jasať bude, hej, jasať a plesať. 2 Dostane slávu Libanonu, nádheru Karmelu a Šárónu. Oni uvidia slávu Hospodinovu, velebu nášho Boha. 3 Posilnite ochabnuté ruky, upevnite klesajúce kolená! 4 Povedzte zdeseným srdciam: Buďte silní, nebojte sa! Ajhľa, váš Boh! Príde pomsta, Božia odplata. On sám príde a zachráni vás. Dosiahnu rozkoš a radosť a zmizne žiaľ i vzdychanie.
Veľká zmena. Robíte si plány do budúcnosti? Keď si plánujeme zmeny, boli by sme radi, keby to boli zmeny k lepšiemu. Prorok Izaiáš to nielen sľubuje, On to oznamuje! Verme tomu, že sa to tak stane! Boh už neraz Svoje sľuby splnil. Určite splní aj tento!
Modlitba: Bože, ďakujeme Ti, že pripravuješ nebo! Odpusť, že si to málo vážime! Prosíme Ťa, daj nám myseľ Kristovu, aby sme chápali, čo dobré čaká Tvoje deti a daj nám túžbu žiť podľa Teba! Amen.

Exposure of sexual exploitation in the Christian community has filled the headlines. From the scandal of priests in the global Catholic Church to the Southern Baptist Convention, Jim Baker, Eric Tuininga, Eddie Long and Ravi Zacharias to less covered accusations and exploitations across many denominations and independent ministries the pattern of abuse by people in power and within power structures across church denominations or affiliations is undeniable.
We can no longer allow the cover up of abuse of people, power, and biblical distortion. We can no longer afford to allow communities of faith to be incubators of abuse and sexual exploitation. We can no longer allow this plague to proliferate in the name of protection the institution of the church, pastors, cheap grace and false doctrine. Communities of faith need to be places where people can find hope, peace, safety, honesty, open communication and reconciliation. They also need be places where perpetrators cannot, and will not, find acceptance or refuge for their depravities.

Julie Roys has been described as a gossipmonger, an apostate and a liar. Such labels would cut most Christians deep, but not Roys. The 57-year-old Chicago-based journalist wears unfounded criticism as “a badge of honour” – she even has a mug printed with some of the more acerbic remarks she has received. For the last four years, Roys has been reporting on the egregious crimes committed in the Church, including the sexual abuse of apologist Ravi Zacharias, the mismanagement and abuse at Willow Creek Community Church and bullying within the Acts 29 church-planting network. It’s the “inter-connected web” of million-dollar Christian ministries that protect the members of their tribe and exploit their relationship with donors and the media, which Roys says is harming the Church’s witness in America – and she’s determined to expose it. Tesnou bránou - biblické zamyslenia na každý deň
Izaiáš 26,1-6
1 V ten deň budú spievať v Judsku túto pieseň: Máme mocné mesto; Boh postavil na ochranu hradby a val. 2 Otvorte brány, nech vojde spravodlivý ľud, ktorý zachováva vernosť. 3 Toho, kto je pevnej mysle, zachovávaš v dokonalom pokoji, lebo v Teba dúfa. 4 Dúfajte v Hospodina na večné veky, lebo Hospodin, Pán, je Skala vekov, 5 pretože znížil tých, čo bývali vysoko; vyvýšené mesto ponížil, ponížil ho až po zem, zrazil ho do prachu. 6 Noha ho pošliape; nohy biednych a kroky núdznych.
Pozývaj nás k spravodlivosti a ku spáse a rozjasni nad nami Svoju tvár! Amen.

TW: In this episode, we are discussing a very sensitive topic, in the nature of abuse. Please join us on the next episode if this topic is too heavy for you.
As someone who has grown up in various church settings, I have observed this insidious culture of cover up when it came to matters of abvse, especially when responding appropriately may have saved several lives. Sometimes it seems like we are more concerned about showing “grace” to the perpetrators of these acts than protecting their victims.
What are your thoughts on the Church's response to abuse?
Why in some instances are the perpetrators more protected than
victims? Especially when the damage is done by a leader?
Can any changes be made?

Abuse in the church is hard to understand ourselves, much less to explain to our kids. But we need to have these conversations.
CHRISTIAN PARENT/CRAZY WORLD focusses on topics that can build our kid’s faith or tear it down. This is most certainly one of those dangerous topics that can tear down their faith as they get older, causing them to leave the church and Christianity altogether.
Why does this happen?
In this episode, Catherine looks at an underlying root cause, and then she points us towards we want and need to offer to our kids—that is hope and healing.

Should we be talking about what happened? Or should we ignore these examples to avoid tarnishing the Church's reputation? That is what we will look at in this episode.

Dr. Frank Turek
Is Christianity GOOD? Many people in our culture today seem to care less about whether or not Christianity is true, and more about the morality of what it teaches. They say the Bible promotes racism, slavery, sexism, and other forms of social injustice. But are any of those statements true?
In his new book, More Than a White Man’s Religion, speaker and global apologist Abdu Murray challenges the pervasive myth that Christianity is an oppressive Western religion and shows believers (and skeptics!) that the gospel message is actually THE SOURCE for the cherished Western ideals of racial and gender equality.
Frank and Abdu discuss women in the church, slavery, racism, and how the Bible passages cited by skeptics can only be understood properly when examined in their context (not in memes). When they are, we see that the Bible champions that ALL people are made in God’s Image, and the skeptic’s charges are false. Abdu also shares how his experience working with RZIM (Ravi Zacharias International Ministries) impacted the content of his book and the importance of looking to Jesus as the (one and only) perfect example of how to treat others–especially when Christians fail to live up to our own ideals.

Faith in Focus
There is no doubt that Ravi Zacharias contributed a great deal to the Body of Christ in his preaching, writing, and defense of the faith. Many came to Christ through his ministry. However, since his death, there have been many sexual and serious allegations made against him. Does this mean that he wasn't really saved? Can Christians sin like this?
John MacArthur shares his thoughts on the Ravi issue and this episode is a response to what he has to say.

On today’s program, one of evangelicalism’s most prominent leaders, Ted Haggard, his hit new lows. We’ll have the latest. And the American Bible Society latest president lasted less than 90 days. The organization has had five presidents in the past 10 years. We’ve got news of the latest changes at this two-century old ministry. We begin today with the latest chapter in the story of Ravi Zacharias International Ministries. Last week, Lighten Group, announced it was shutting down. Lighten Group is a new ministry started by Sarah Davis, former CEO of Ravi Zacharias International Ministries (RZIM) and daughter of late Christian apologist Ravi Zacharias. Lighten Group, whose team is comprised of former RZIM employees, was founded in the fall of 2021 and was supported by RZIM funding. It is not clear what has happened to the millions of dollars in assets owned by RZIM when the organization imploded in the aftermath of a sex abuse scandal.
Before we go, a reminder: if you made a donation to MinistryWatch during the month of September, we’ll send you a copy of my book “Restoring All Things.” It’s a book that I co-wrote with The Colson Center’s John Stonestreet.
The producers for today’s program are Rich Roszel and Jeff McIntosh. We get database and other technical support from Cathy Goddard, Stephen DuBarry, Emily Kern, Rod Pitzer, and Casey Sudduth. Writers who contributed to today’s program include Emily Miller, Todd Nettleton, Anne Stych, Audrey Jackson, Alejandra Molina, Bob Smietana, Jesse T. Jackson, Jessica Etturalde, and Steve Rabey. Romanos 8:31-32TOMARLE LA PALABRA A DIOS.

Peter Wehner is a contributing editor at The Atlantic and contributing writer to the New York Times which is where he wrote a column in January of 2016 that he would not be voting for Donald Trump under any circumstances. Pete is also the author of The Death of Politics: How to Heal Our Frayed Republic After Trump. Earlier in his career, Pete worked in the Reagan and George H.W. Bush Administrations. In the George W. Bush White House, Pete was deputy director of speechwriting before becoming director of the Office of Strategic Initiatives. Additionally, he was involved in President Bush’s 2004 re-election campaign as well as Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign.
Pete and Corey talked about the virtue of grace; the catastrophic effect that the failures of leaders such as Ravi Zacharias and others have had on the church; the marriage of American Christianity with Christian nationalism; what it means to be a "theoretical pessimist but an operational optimist"; how we can fight against the influence of those who can't be reached by reality while persuading those who can; and more broadly how to have healthier encounters among folks who disagree.

The Runaway Eve Book Club is once again in session. We're continuing our deep dive into the infamous "I Kissed Dating Goodbye", written by Evangelical darling of the 90s Joshua Harris. Yes, he's since renounced the book. Yes, he's since "apologized". But, as they say... "there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known". (It's the Bible. The Bible says that.) So we're taking Josh to task and discussing the ways he upheld and solidified the damaging and dangerous beliefs inherent to Christian dating and courtship, and holding him accountable for the ways this book has reverberated through many of our lives.
In this episode, I mention Ravi Zacharias. While I'm hesitant to send you to Christianity Today legitimately, the most comprehensive overview of who he was and what he did can be found here. Massive content warning for themes of rape, sexual assault, abuse of power, etc.
If you want to read along with "I Kissed Dating Goodbye", I would suggest using Daddy G to search for a free pdf copy, which is what I did. If you must purchase the book, please at least look for an indie bookstore to patronize. :)
If you like what you hear, don't forget to rate and review on your preferred listening platform! Join the community on Instagram at @runaway_eve. I'm always open to topic suggestions, ideas, and any other ways you want to collaborate.

Happy July, everyone! Today on the podcast, we’re introducing you to Gbemileke! Gbemileke is from Nigeria and she shares a lot about the Nigerian culture, Jollof Rice, and what it was like for her to grow up in Nigeria. Her father worked at a university, so she shares about growing up around the university’s culture.
In this podcast, she addresses how her dad’s abusive actions towards her family caused her mom to take the kids and leave. She talks about how moving away from the university affected her and her family, how depression set in, how she would go to a Mosque on Fridays and church on Sundays, her experience with faith deconstruction, and how all of that influences her today.

The daily radio broadcast of CARM.org. Open calls, questions, and discussion with Guest host Matt Slick LIVE in the studio. Topics include:
Is Satan currently in hell? What do you think about the theory of masonic influence on our government? I hear some preachers who never say "the Holy Spirit" but always just "Holy Spirit" is that concerning? Can Christians perform exorcisms? Is someone like Ravi Zacharias and his issues, in heaven now? My church is wanting to put in their constitution that they will only use the 1908 KJV. What should I do? Is it ok to go to a thrift store that's affiliated with the SDA? How do you answer the abortion argument regarding the life of the mother?
