These 5 mistakes stop people from reaching a Band 7. Can you see any of these in your writing?

Not paraphrasing the task statementRephrase the task question in your own words to demonstrate that you’ve understood it. Using synonyms and changing the sentence structure helps. For example, if the task says, “Some people believe that too much money is spent on protecting animals and their habitats. To what extent do you agree?” you could paraphrase it as “Many argue that wildlife protection is too costly”.

Not answering all parts of the questionThe task often has multiple parts—make sure you address each one clearly. If you miss a part, you’ll lose marks for Task Response. For example, if the question asks about both the advantages and disadvantages of a topic, make sure you discuss both. Ignoring one part could cost you points.

Not starting every paragraph with a topic sentenceA topic sentence sets the tone for the paragraph and keeps it focused. Without it, your writing may lack direction. For example, if your paragraph is about the benefits of exercise, your topic sentence could be: “One major advantage of regular exercise is its positive impact on physical health.” This makes it clear what the paragraph will focus on.
4.Listing too many ideas, but not developing themInstead of throwing out a bunch of ideas without much detail, practice in writing about two key points per paragraph, and back them up with explanations and examples. This adds depth to your argument.
- Writing paragraphs that are too long or too shortSome students write huge paragraphs because they try to cram in too much information without breaking it up. Others just randomly divide their essay into very short ones because they don’t understand the purpose of paragraphing. Find a balance – each paragraph should focus on one main point with enough detail to explain it clearly.

Every IELTS success story has something special about it, from personal dedication to smart study strategies. Today I would like you to meet my student Sara and learn about her inspiring journey. Balancing a demanding job and a new baby, Sara didn’t just take on the IELTS – she nailed it, scoring an impressive Overall Band 8.
Getting to Know SaraSara was up against it from the start, balancing her career with caring for a 4-month-old. But her strategic approach to studying for the IELTS really paid off.
Here’s How She Did ItListening 8.5: At work, Sara’s day-to-day involves chatting with people from all over, which really tuned her ear into different accents—a big plus for the IELTS listening test. She also hammered out practice tests from our High Scorer’s Choice Set 1 book. Her motto? “Practice makes progress”, and it certainly rang true, helping her ace the listening section.
Reading 8.0: Sara was all about soaking up as many tips as she could from other test-takers (posted on IELTS-Blog.com) and diving deep into practice with loads of Cambridge test books. She tackled a ton of Academic reading too, even though she was preparing for General Training IELTS. When you prepare for a harder test, you do really well in an easier one!
Writing 7.0: Writing was a tough nut to crack for Sara, but she didn’t shy away from it. Two key things that made a big difference were learning from our teachers’ feedback and using vocab + sentence structures from sample essays. As a result, Sara pulled off a score she once thought was just a dream!
Speaking 8.0: Limited time meant Sara couldn’t practice with cue cards as much as she’d have liked. Yet, she nailed the speaking part by giving solid answers that showed off her conversation skills.

When she decided to take IELTS, she wasn’t sure how to prepare and found IELTS-Blog.com by searching “how to study for IELTS”. Despite a pause in studying for personal reasons, Rim persevered. She took the test and scored a Band 7 overall, with an impressive Band 8 in Listening.
Reflecting on her experience, Rim thought about what might have been if she had been able to continue her studies. But at the same time she was proud of her performance, knowing she had made the most of her situation.
Rim has some encouraging words for anyone else feeling unsure about taking the IELTS: “For anyone feeling intimidated by the IELTS, or doubting their abilities, I say just go for it. Don’t underestimate yourself or what you have in mind. Our potential can really surprise us.”

You probably remember Alan as one of the IELTS Results competition winners. We celebrated their success earlier this month, and Alan took the first place in the General Training group.
Alan lives in India and speaks Hindi as his first language. He came across IELTS-Blog.com and subscribed to our daily emails in January this year. When he took the test, he scored Band 8.0, and decided to take part in our monthly IELTS results competition. As a winner, Alan was invited to share his experience, and he wanted to give back and help everyone still studying for the test. Here is what Alan told us about his IELTS preparation, and how you can do well in the test:
“My English proficiency before starting the preparation was at a moderate level, I would say.
With the initial practice assessments I took, I was around Band 7-8 in Listening and Reading, Band 5-6 in Writing, and an estimate of Band 6 in Speaking (based on feedback I received). My weaknesses were writing and speaking, so I concentrated my 2 months of prep on those more than the other sections. I dedicated around an hour a day to preparation.
Some general tips that I found helpful:
– Practice consistently: fix a time in the day (I fixed a time after work to study).
– Book the test in advance when you feel like you are moderately ready. This gives a deadline and a reason to study. Dragging out the preparation might reduce your motivation and confidence.
– Go through the free materials provided when registering for the exam.
– Read the IELTS-blog daily emails
– Focus on your weaknesses
– Do not underestimate the difficulty of the exam. One of my friends (who has better English proficiency than me) ignored the writing letter/essay structure and got Band 6 in the test.
– Take mock tests for Reading and Listening online on websites like IELTS-Blog.com to familiarise yourself with the computer-based interface.
– Keep the IELTS assessment criteria in mind while doing tasks
– Track your Listening and Reading practice scores

We’ve been talking about shopping, and now, in the third part of the test, I would like to ask you a few more questions related to this.
- Who do you think spends more time shopping, younger or older people, and why?
Well, I believe younger people spend more time shopping than older generations. This is likely due to their need for the latest trends and styles, as well as the appeal of new technology and gadgets. Younger generations are more likely to be swayed by targeted advertisements that promote specific products and services, rather than relying on word-of-mouth recommendations from friends or family members. They may also be more willing to take risks and buy items they haven’t seen before, whereas older generations may prefer tried and trusted products or items that come highly recommended by others.
- Do you think advertisements have advantages for consumers?
I think that advertising can be a beneficial tool for customers, as it provides them with an opportunity to learn about new products and services, that they might otherwise have been unaware of. This allows them to make informed decisions when choosing what best suits their needs and budget. Advertising can also help people save money by informing them about discounts, sales or coupons available from particular retailers.
- Do advertisements have advantages for companies?
I am convinced that companies benefit greatly from advertising campaigns because these can help with brand recognition and increase sales amongst their target audience by spreading awareness of their company’s product. Advertising can also help build loyalty among existing customers by reinforcing the positive aspects of the company’s brand identity. This is achieved by repetition of logos, slogans or catchphrases across multiple mediums such as TV ads or radio commercials.
- What makes an advertisement effective?
It seems to me that a good advertisement should be able to capture its target audience’s attention quickly, yet remain memorable enough for them to recall later on when making purchasing decisions. Things like catchy jingles, engaging visuals or humorous dialogue, help to achieve this effect. In addition to this, effective advertising should provide clear messages regarding how the product works, or how it can help solve problems faced by its target audience.
- How much do you think advertisements can be trusted?
The trustworthiness of an advertisement depends largely on its source. If we are talking about sponsored content created by reputable companies, then there is usually no reason why we can’t trust what is being shared within the ad. However, if we are discussing unauthorised ads placed across websites or mobile apps, then there is more uncertainty surrounding what information is being presented. These types of ads could contain misleading claims about products or services offered, which could result in consumers being taken advantage of financially.
- Do you think advertisements should be regulated more strictly?
I would say it makes sense, in order to protect consumers against false claims which could mislead individuals into thinking certain products or services will deliver results which aren’t actually possible in reality. This is particularly important when dealing with health-related goods, where exaggerated promises made concerning weight loss diets and such, could convince vulnerable individuals to invest unnecessarily into something that won’t fulfill its intended purpose.

My dream is to buy a custom-made electric guitar in the future. It’s an expensive purchase and I have been saving up for quite a while. It would have a sleek, curved body made of mahogany wood with a sunburst finish. The hardware of the guitar would be gold-plated, and it would be equipped with two humbucker pickups that offer an incredibly versatile tone range. I plan to buy this guitar within the next year or two, as I feel that having my own customised instrument would help me to take my musical ambitions to the next level.
Music and playing an instrument is something that runs in my family. Some of my earliest memories are of my dad playing his acoustic guitar while we all sang as a family. And while I do enjoy strumming on a simple acoustic guitar, the moment I first picked up an electric guitar and heard its distinct sound, I knew I wanted to explore its unique sound further. Since then, I have been dedicated to improving my skills and expanding my knowledge of different genres and techniques.
Having my own custom-made electric guitar would provide me with an opportunity to really express myself creatively on the instrument, as well as refine my technical abilities by testing out new sounds and improvisational ideas. I know that this guitar would become a keepsake for me even long after my musical journey has ended. It would be a reminder of the drive and passion that pushed me towards achieving something special, and I would love to pass it on to my children one day.

Write about the following topic:
In some cities, the numbers of tourists seem to be overwhelming. Why is this happening? What are the effects of this on individuals and society?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.
You should write at least 250 words.
Sample Band 9 Essay
With the rise of cheaper airlines and with technology and affluence allowing people to travel more easily, tourism is an industry that has experienced a significant increase. This caused the numbers of tourists in some popular cities to become greater than desirable and created some effects on both individuals and society.
People feed on the positive experiences of others, and vivid images on social media, shared by happy holiday-makers, attract more and more visitors to iconic cities. This creates a snowball effect where increasing numbers of people cause an even bigger influx of tourism by sharing their experiences online. Affordable airfares and modern websites that make finding accommodation easier also play a significant role in making certain cities extremely attractive to tourists.
One positive effect of this phenomenon for both individuals and society is that it is an indicator that people are travelling to different countries. Travel is a great way to broaden the mind and develop more understanding and acceptance of other cultures and beliefs. Individuals will become more tolerant and society should be more integrated and peaceful. Another positive effect is that jobs and businesses are created and supported by the tourism industry, thus generating taxes to help support government infrastructures.
There are negative effects though, especially for the residents of the cities with high numbers of tourists. It is well known that excessive tourism dilutes the authentic culture of the destination, the prices go up and the quality of products and services goes down. The historic centres of too many popular cities now seem to only feature the same chain stores and services, and food tends to become more internationalised rather than offering the authentic food of the country and region. The centres of very busy tourist towns become overly geared towards providing accommodation for rent, whether it is hotels, hostels or private apartments. This reduces the amount of housing for locals, as well as driving up rental and purchase prices.
To sum up, tourism has many positive effects, but when the numbers of tourists get so high, it can spoil the authenticity of a destination, which is negative for local and visiting individuals and society as a whole.

We’ve been talking about noisy places, and now, in the third part of the test, I would like to ask you a few more questions related to this.
- Is noise pollution an issue where you live?
Yes, noise pollution is certainly an issue for me. In the city centre, in particular, there are always many cars driving around, and the sound of their horns can be heard even late into the night. These noises make it difficult to sleep or concentrate.
- What do you think are the main causes of noise pollution in our cities?
I think that would have to be transportation. Cars, buses, trains and planes all create a lot of noise, which can disrupt people’s daily lives and affect their overall mental well-being. Also, construction work is another thing that contributes to the noise pollution, because the sound of drilling or sawing materials for building projects can be extremely loud and disruptive.
- Can noise pollution affect people’s health? In what way?
Yes, noise pollution can definitely have adverse effects on people’s health because it causes both physical and psychological distress. It has been linked with higher blood pressure levels and it can also lead to greater levels of stress and anxiety, because it’s hard to focus or relax when there is constant noise from transport or construction sites.
- How do you think noise pollution affects wildlife?
Noise pollution makes it more difficult for animals to hunt or find food sources, as well as mating becomes a problem. This means that certain animal species may suffer a decline in population. There are also animals that rely on hearing to get around, such as whales and dolphins, and underwater noise pollution from ships interferes with their ability to navigate.
- Do you think governments should regulate noise levels in public places more strictly?
Yes, I think they should take better care of the well-being of residents living there. If the government enforces stricter regulations on how loud businesses and transportation operators can allow their machines and vehicles to be, then we can improve conditions drastically for those living nearby.
- What can businesses do to reduce their contribution to noise pollution?
Businesses have many options when it comes to cutting down their noise pollution emissions. Some strategies can include improving insulation around machinery used so that sound waves will not reach far, and also educating staff about how to best keep general sound levels down when working (especially after hours).
- What role do you think technology can play in reducing noise pollution in big cities?
Technology has a significant role in reducing noise pollution in metropolitan areas. For example, recent developments have made it simpler to find substitutes for traditional power generation methods, such as electric vehicles which are much quieter than petrol or diesel-powered ones.

Describe a noisy place you have been to. You should say

Well, I actually have been to a very noisy place recently! I went to a concert at the city park. I’d heard about the upcoming performance from friends, and we were all really excited to go, so I got us tickets as soon as they were available. Everyone was looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere of one of the city’s iconic venues.
We were expecting an amazing night, but it was so much more than that! The place was crowded with people who couldn’t wait to see the show. As soon as the opening act started performing, it got incredibly loud! The bass was shaking the entire place down, and there were thousands of people screaming and singing along! It was a truly unique experience, one that I’ll never forget.
The noise level reached its peak when the headliner came on stage; you could feel the energy in the air! The screams and cheers of excitement seemed endless as everyone sang along to every song! It was definitely a fun atmosphere, although it was also quite overwhelming at times, especially because of how loud it was.
Overall, it was an incredible experience. Despite feeling slightly overpowered by all of the noise, I enjoyed every moment of it! It’s something that will definitely stay with me forever.

- Do you like wearing t-shirts?
Yes, I love to wear them! They’re so comfortable and versatile. For example, they can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion.
- How often do you wear t-shirts?
I tend to wear them every day after work. They are the most comfortable thing to wear after having to wear professional clothes at work.
- What kind of t-shirts do you wear for different occasions?
When I’m going out with friends, I usually opt for tees that make a bold statement about who I am, and what I believe in, such as political or social justice messages, or slogans that represent my identity and values. When I’m casually lounging around the house, my favorite t-shirt choice is something cosy and oversized.
- Have you ever bought a t-shirt as a souvenir from a place you visited?
Yes! Whenever I go on vacation, buying a unique souvenir t-shirt has become one of my go-to activities, because it’s such a fun way to bring something back from my travels, as a reminder of the good times.
- What do you think of t-shirts with slogans or messages on them?
I think they’re really great for making bold statements about what matters most to us personally and politically. Plus there are some really creative slogans and designs out there!
- Do you think t-shirts are comfortable to wear?
Definitely yes! Cotton is a great fabric, because it makes for such breathable comfort no matter what season it is. Also, there are so many styles and fits now, that pretty much anybody can find something that suits their own preferences.

It really depends on what look and feel I’m going for, and also on the weather and occasion… but generally speaking I’d say short sleeved, since those give me more flexibility.

Nowadays in many countries, young people don’t communicate with older people as much as they used to. Why is this happening? How could this situation be improved?
Sample Band 8 Essay
In this day and age, a large number of nations are grappling with the phenomenon that younger generations no longer communicate as frequently with their elders as they used to. There are various reasons why this situation has arisen and several solutions can be implemented in order to improve it.
Firstly, one of the main factors causing this communication gap between young people and older generations is the ever-increasing technology usage among young generations. Many young people spend their time on devices like computers, smartphones or tablets, which provide them with platforms for social interaction without real-life physical contact or communication with other people. Older people, on the other hand, prefer the old-fashioned ways to communicate, which means there are fewer opportunities for contact between the generations.
Another possible reason behind the lack of communication among members of different age groups is the cultural values that have been instilled throughout history; for instance, in many countries, children are taught from an early age to respect and obey their elders without questioning them. As a result, when younger generations become adults, they may find it difficult to have meaningful conversations with older people where opinions can be freely shared and discussed.
In order to improve this situation several steps can be taken. For example, schools can incorporate classes focusing on inter-generational dialogue so that students could learn how to communicate effectively across all ages by discussing topics such as politics or culture in a respectful manner. Additionally, families could encourage younger members of the family to spend more time talking with their grandparents and uncles/aunts, either in person or on the phone, instead of just spending their free time online. This could help create stronger bonds between different generations within a family.
To sum up, it is clear that raising awareness about this issue is key, since it carries significant implications for our society’s future development if left unresolved. Thus, everyone should take action towards promoting inter-generational dialogues so that our young and old can learn from each other’s experiences and create better connections within our societies moving forward.

For some test takers this is a very familiar situation: you’ve taken the IELTS exam, the results are out, everything is what you hoped for… except for that one pesky little score, that’s just half a band lower than you need. Argh… now what?!
If that’s your experience and you’re in Australia, IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR for short) has just become a solution to that problem.
All you need to do is log into your IELTS profile, view your results, choose the skill you wish to retake and book your new test date.
If you’re not in Australia and IELTS One Skill Retake isn’t yet available in your country, this information is still useful, so read on. IELTS has just started the roll-out of this new option, using Australia as their testing ground. When IELTS One Skill Retake comes to your country, it will likely work the same as in Australia, so it’s worth knowing how it can help you and what it can do for you, for when you get access to it.
Where is IELTS One Skill Retake available now?IELTS One Skill Retake is now available at IDP Melbourne, IDP Sydney, IDP Brisbane, IDP Adelaide, IDP Perth and IDP Cairns. The roll-out is in full swing and soon the option will be offered in many other test centres across Australia.
What will my IELTS One Skill Retake result look like?After completing the IELTS One Skill Retake you will receive an IELTS certificate that will include the 3 unchanged scores from your previous full test and your new score from the One Skill Retake test. The date on the Test Report Form (TRF for short) will be the original date of your full test.
Important! Your previous TRF remains valid, and in case your score in the One Skill Retake is lower than the original one in your full test, you can still use the original TRF if it helps.
Is IELTS One Skill Retake acceptable for immigration and further study?For immigration purposes some visa subclasses accept the IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) and some don’t, so make sure to check the list of visa subclasses where OSR is allowed here.
For further study there are no known issues, because you will receive a new IELTS certificate including the unchanged scores from your previous test and your new score from the skill you took again.
What are the limitations of IELTS One Skill Retake?1. You must have taken the IELTS test on computer, at a test centre that offers One Skill Retake.
At present IELTS One Skill Retake is only available to people who took their full IELTS test on computer and it’s not available to people who took the paper-based test. So if you are planning to go for IELTS One Skill Retake in case your score is lower than you need, book your full test on computer AND make sure your test centre offers IELTS One Skill Retake, to be eligible to retake just one skill later.
2. You need to apply for IELTS One Skill Retake within 60 days of your original, full test.
This shouldn’t generally be a problem, because for computer-delivered tests the results are available 3-5 days after your test, which leaves plenty of time for you to book your IELTS One Skill Retake.
3. You can only retake one skill for each full IELTS test that you’ve sat.
So, for example, if you took the IELTS test and you’re unhappy with your scores in Writing and Speaking, you can retake either the Writing or the Speaking as a single skill, but not both. If you need to change scores in 2 skills, the only way is to take the test again.
What if I have 2 skills where I need to raise my score?Theoretically, you could apply for EOR (Enquiry On Results, also known as remarking) first, for both of the problematic skills, and see if one of your scores goes up as a result of that, then apply for IELTS One Skill Retake for the other score. According to IELTS.org, EOR takes anywhere between 2 and 21 days, and if you do receive the result of your EOR application within that time frame, that gives you up to 5 weeks to book your One Skill Retake. While in theory this might work, in reality, if there are delays with your EOR, you may run out of time to apply for your One Skill Retake.

There is a new way to take IELTS: it is called IELTS online and you take the test from the privacy of your home. At the moment you can only take an Academic IELTS test online (not General Training), and your IELTS certificate isn’t acceptable for immigration purposes.
Many people are curious about this convenient option, but also a little bit cautious because it is very new. It is only human to fear the unknown, and the best antidote is to get some information – which is why we have interviewed a student who took IELTS online very recently.
Francesco took IELTS online from his home in Italy, and here is what he said about his experience:
Before taking the test, Francesco downloaded a special software that locks your computer down to the IELTS test and doesn’t let you visit any other websites. It shuts down all the processes running in the background on your computer.
Before the test started, Francesco showed his passport to the proctor who took some time to verify the document. Who is a proctor? It is an IELTS invigilator who monitors your Listening, Reading, and Writing tests online.
The check-in process is very thorough as the proctor asks you to show every single angle of the room. Also, they don’t want you to move your head nor your lips when you read (and they interrupt you during the exam if you are doing so).
Once the identification process is over and the test begins, you don’t see the proctor anymore, but if they think there is something wrong with the way you behave (you are moving your lips, etc), they will block you and then you will see their face as they talk to you.
To take a bathroom break, you need to get the proctor’s attention by raising your hand and waiting until they respond to you. You can’t leave your desk without their permission. Only one 5-minute bathroom break is allowed and you must take it between test sections (after the Listening test and before the Reading test, or after the Reading test and before the Writing test). When you come back from the break, you need to go through the whole check in process again, grab your laptop and do another 360 degree check of the room (ceiling and floor included).
The order of the sub-tests is Listening, Reading and Writing. Each sub-test has a fixed duration, and the software takes you through them automatically, so you don’t need to do anything to go from Listening to Reading or from Reading to Writing. It is important to know that you can only change your answers while you’re in the same sub-test. For example, if the Listening test has finished and you were taken to the Reading test, you won’t be able to go back and change your Listening answers. The Speaking test is usually taken a day or two before the other 3 sections and you do it via a video call with the examiner.
Francesco’s first impression of the Listening test was that it seemed easier than the practice tests he did previously. Instead of filling in the blanks with his own words, there were alternatives presented that he could choose from. However, they didn’t spell two personal names on the recording so he couldn’t grasp them. He wasn’t allowed to use scratch paper in the Listening test to take notes, but it was possible to type notes on screen. You just need to right click on any part of the text, and then you’ll be able to type notes.
In the Speaking test, in Parts 1 and 3 the examiner asked the questions on a video call. In Part 2 they showed a cue card on the screen and then gave Francesco 1 minute to think and write down notes on the IELTS software. Francesco liked the attitude of the examiner who asked follow-up questions based on his responses, so that was really nice.

More and more people today are drinking sugar-based drinks. Why is this happening? What measures can be taken to reverse this trend?
Sample Band 8 Essay
An alarming number of people today consume sugar-based drinks, whether it is in the form of soda, energy drinks or fruit drinks. Often consumers are lured by their widespread availability and convenience, however, marketing campaigns also play a role, targeting young people and giving them the perception that sugary drinks are not as unhealthy as they actually are.
The availability of these types of drinks has greatly increased over time. They can now be found in almost any store or restaurant, which makes them easily accessible to almost anyone. The fact that they are often cheaper than alternatives, such as water or freshly squeezed juice, makes them an especially attractive option for those on a budget. Marketing campaigns for sugary beverages have been quite successful in creating positive associations attached to these products through advertisements on TV and billboards. This encourages people to consider them fun rather than unhealthy and normalises them within society.
Luckily, reversing the rise in popularity of sugary drinks is still possible, if we act now and attack the problem from different angles. One of the very first steps should be educating people on the health risks associated with high sugar intake so that they can make better-informed decisions when selecting what type of beverage they consume. Companies should also be held accountable by law for their misleading marketing campaigns aimed at children and teenagers who are more likely to believe the false claims about their products’ health benefits without fully understanding what’s being sold to them. Schools, colleges and universities, and any institutions catering for young people, should consider banning sugary drinks and replacing them with refreshing alternatives without added sugar.
Overall, it is important that we recognise the potential health risks posed by consuming too much sugar from soft drinks and take actionable steps towards reversing this trend in order to ensure our long-term wellbeing. Through greater education, government regulation, and increased corporate responsibility we can ensure that more people understand why reducing their intake of sugary beverages is important while still allowing them to access enjoyable yet healthier options.

Many people try to achieve a work-life balance but fail. Why is this happening? What can be done to help people overcome this problem?
Sample Band 8 Essay
Many people strive to achieve a work-life balance, but often find themselves failing despite their best efforts. This is not surprising, as balancing work and life commitments can be extremely difficult due to both having their unique stressors.
One of the major reasons why so many people struggle to achieve harmony between their personal and professional lives is that now it is easier than ever for people to stay connected outside of regular work hours. This has led to an expectation that employees should always be available, and they risk being seen as unreliable or uncommitted if they are not. A knock-on effect of longer working hours is that little time is left for leisure activities such as socialising or engaging in hobbies or sports, which help reduce stress levels and improve overall well-being. This type of pressure and lack of free time can lead to feelings of burnout, with no respite from life’s pressures, resulting in chronic fatigue and diminished motivation over time.
Helping those struggling to find a suitable work-life balance will require joint efforts of managers and employees. Workers, for instance, need to recognise the importance of taking regular breaks throughout the day and getting enough sleep each night, while employers should consider being more flexible when it comes to allowing staff to work remotely and offering paid vacation days. This will give employees space, both mentally and physically, enabling them to better manage their commitments without overextending themselves.
In conclusion, achieving a successful work-life balance is something that many cannot quite reach due to external pressures from employers and a lack of downtime. However, these issues can be overcome, if we create realistic boundaries between our professional lives and personal goals, and make conscious decisions about how we want to spend our time.

Hi everyone, this is Simone. Today is the last day of 2022, which means I have one last thing to do, before I can go on and celebrate the New Year. It’s been a tradition for many years now, for me to take a look back, see what I’ve accomplished this year, and think about everything I’d love to do in the New Year.

- Is there a difference between old and young people’s lifestyle?
When you think – really think – about it, the main difference is that older people have more time to do what they enjoy, but they usually don’t have as much energy to do these activities. And most elderly people end up living a quiet life with a gentle daily routine. On the other hand, youngsters usually have to follow a strict routine set by their parents or by their school, and they have very little time to pursue activities that they actually enjoy. It’s a very interesting paradox.
- What kind of lifestyle do younger people prefer?
I think the youth of the current generation mostly interact online and a lot of their time is spent on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. This means they have a sedentary lifestyle with very little physical activity. When we were young, we spent all day outside and our moms had to beg us to come inside. Unfortunately, these days the exact opposite is true, and we have to plead with our teenagers to spend some time outside in the sun.
- Do younger and older people choose to live in the same places?
This is something that I haven’t given much thought to, but I would have to say that older people tend to live in places that are less crowded and more laid back. Young people always want to be in the middle of the action, and they choose places that are much livelier and more exciting.
- Why do older people prefer to live in quiet places?
As I said before, I think that older people prefer to have a more peaceful lifestyle and because of this most of them move away from the hustle and bustle of city life and settle in the suburbs.
- Why do younger people prefer big cities to the countryside?
Young people often live in busier areas like the city, and I think this has a lot to do with the fact that cities have more work opportunities, they don’t have to commute as much and such places usually have a vibrant nightlife, which is appealing to the younger working generation.
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of living in a big city?
Well, having access to better facilities like healthcare and education is a major plus point, and to add to that it is often easier to find good employment opportunities in a large city than it is in a small town. This is mainly because big-name brands and companies usually operate in cities. However, due to these advantages, many people flock to the city in search of a better life and this leads to overcrowding and traffic congestion. It can sometimes take hours just to travel a few kilometres because of this.

Answer
When I think of a good city to live, I think Islamabad; it has won my heart with its beauty and its kind-hearted people. Islamabad is located in the heart of Pakistan, and it is the capital city of Pakistan. I grew up in South Africa, and the only knowledge I had about Pakistan and Islamabad was the negative image created by the media. Many years later, I travelled to the city with my family and found that this place was nothing like what I had seen on TV.
Each street is lined with trees, and there are parks and greenery everywhere. Sometimes we just drive around the city and marvel at all the beautiful trees and flowers. Apart from this, the city is a first-world city and you can find basically everything you would in any western country. There are fast food outlets like McDonald’s, large shopping malls and big-name international brands that operate here.
But the thing that amazes me the most about this place is that it is super clean, and this is mostly because the residents take pride in their city and homes, and so they take care of their surroundings.
Another feature is that it is perfect for tourists, it has everything a modern city can have, plus it’s very green and the cost of living is highly affordable. You could live like a king here even earning the minimum wage of most first-world countries.

In many workplaces online communication has overtaken face to face meetings. Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?
Sample Band 8 Essay
In today’s ever-increasingly digital world, online communication has become the norm for many workplaces. While this development offers numerous advantages for companies such as greater flexibility and efficiency, it also brings with it certain disadvantages like miscommunication, which must be weighed against its benefits.
One of the primary advantages of online communication is that it makes it easier for teams to stay in touch without having to physically convene. This is especially beneficial when individuals or groups are dispersed across vast distances. Reduced travel costs, as well as time saved from not having to travel to and from meetings, also represent meaningful savings for businesses. Additionally, online communication platforms often have a range of features designed to make collaboration more efficient, such as providing an easy way to share documents and other materials with remote team members. To illustrate, digital resources can be sent quickly and securely via email or other software services like Dropbox or Google Drive.
There is a potential drawback associated with relying too heavily on online communication at work, as the lack of physical proximity between members of a team can often lead to misunderstandings due to a loss of context or nonverbal cues that would otherwise be present during face-to-face meetings. However, in my opinion, issues of this nature can be solved by using written language more carefully to avoid any confusion or miscommunication among colleagues.
In conclusion, when online communication tools are used properly, they undoubtedly provide companies with greater flexibility in how their teams collaborate without sacrificing clarity of communication, quality or efficiency.

- Where do you live at the moment?
Right now, I live in a tiny one-bedroom apartment in the heart of the city. It’s quite cramped for space, but the view from the balcony is phenomenal since you can see the entire city from it.
- Who do you live with, and why?
I live alone, mostly because my apartment is too small to have a roommate, and also, I am a bit of an introvert and prefer to have my own space where I can relax and recharge after work.
- Do you like snacks?
Yes, I do. I think most people like snacks, they just prefer different types of snacks. In my case, I love snacking on peanuts and raisins, especially while I am watching a TV show or a movie.
- What time of the day do you prefer to have snacks and why?
I usually have a snack in the afternoon on most weekdays. This is because I often get swamped at work and don’t have time for a proper lunch break, so I grab whatever I can find to give me a boost. This could be anything from a bar of chocolate to crisps.
- Do you think snacking is a healthy habit?
In my case it is definitely not healthy at all. That’s because it ruins my appetite before dinner and then I end up snacking again late at night. You could say it messes up my internal cues. What’s worse is that most of the snacks I eat are processed foods that are either full of sugar or added salt. They are not worth the extra calories, but I just can’t seem to shake this unhealthy habit.
- What were your favourite snacks as a child?
As a kid I just loved marshmallows, and my dad would usually buy me a bunch when he came home from work. My sister and I would make a cheat version of Smores with them in the microwave and they were just divine!
- If you had a child, what snacks would you give him/her?
I would like to think that I would offer my child healthier alternatives like roasted nuts, dried fruit, and flavoured yoghurt as snacks. However, I think every kid deserves the occasional candy bar every now and then.

Even though experts believe that walking is a great way to improve one’s health, very few people walk nowadays. Why aren’t people walking? What can be done to encourage them to walk more?
Sample Band 8 Essay
The benefits of walking are numerous, and experts recommend it as a good way to keep healthy and fit. Despite this, the number of people who walk on a daily basis is on the decline. The reasons for this are manifold, but there are also several solutions that may help people walk more.
Lack of time is the most common reason people cite for not engaging in any form of physical activity. These days most people have hectic schedules that involve juggling their work and home responsibilities. As a result, they are often too exhausted or pressed for time and therefore opt for faster and more comfortable forms of transport, such as cars, bikes or public transport. Another major reason for the reduced number of pedestrians on the roads is a lack of safety. Most full-time workers are not free to walk during the day, and will skip it in the evenings or early morning hours, if they do not feel safe enough to do so.
Fortunately, there are quite a few solutions to this issue. One is making walkers safe, which means the government should ensure that there are enough sidewalks and streetlights available in every suburb, so that pedestrians can walk or jog safely whenever time allows. Another useful option is to create special walking tracks and parks in neighbourhoods where people can get some much-needed exercise in the evenings. The added benefit of promoting the healthy lifestyle and walking in the community makes this solution even more attractive.
To conclude, the pressures of daily life and lack of safely while walking reduce the popularity of this healthy practice. Governments can reverse this trend by creating more green spaces for people to walk in and addressing their safety concerns.

This is a model answer for an Academic Writing Task 1 from the IELTS exam in the USA, shared recently. This response is likely to get Band 8 or 8.5 in IELTS.
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task
The charts below show the average hours worked last year by full time and part time employees in 3 countries. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Band 8.5 Model Answer
The bar charts show the average number of hours that full-time and part-time employees worked in the Netherlands, the UK and Greece in the previous year.
Overall, what immediately stands out is the fact that the number of hours worked by male and female workers was relatively equal for both types of work, and that full-time employees worked almost twice as much as part-time employees.
Taking a closer look at the numbers for full-time positions, the figures for both men and women ranged between 35 to 40 hours per week. Male workers in the UK were the only ones to exceed 40 hours a week. The figures for the Netherlands were the lowest for both genders, at around 35 hours weekly.
Moving on to part-time employment, the difference between the number of hours worked by men and women is more apparent in this chart. People from the Netherlands worked the fewest hours with men spending 10 hours, and women – roughly 15 hours per week at work. The UK had almost equal figures for both genders, around 17 hours a week, while the figures for Greece were slightly higher; the male workers there did around 20 hours per week and female – a touch above 20.

Speaking test
Part 1 (Interview)
1. Do you live in a house or an apartment?
I currently live in a cosy one-bedroom apartment in a high-rise building on the waterfront. It has an open-plan kitchen and a small living room. It’s a bit cramped, but we have managed to make good use of the small amount of space we have. As a matter of fact, my neighbourhood is quite pricey, so I consider myself lucky to have found some reasonably priced accommodation, even if space is tight.
2. Do you have a favourite room?
Well, technically it’s not really a room, but I have always loved spending time on our little enclosed patio. I am not one for fancy decorations, you could say that I am more of a minimalist by nature. So, this space can only fit a small table and chairs, and I also use it to grow a few herbs and some flowering plants.
3. Why is this room your favourite?
In the afternoons, the sun hits the balcony at just the right angle and it becomes the perfect place to unwind with a good book and a cup of tea. I have a few planters there, which makes this room special because it’s the closest I can get to nature in the city. I love the vibrant colours and calming scents of the flowers in spring. I guess it’s because it reminds me a lot of the garden in my childhood home.
4. Have you ever visited old buildings or monuments?
Yes, quite a few times. As a child, my family and I would often travel to different parts of the country to take a look at historical buildings or ancient ruins. More recently, we visited an ancient Buddhist monastery which is also a world heritage site, and it was quite enlightening.
5. Would you like to visit any old buildings/monuments in the future?
Yes, of course. I will continue our family tradition in the future, and it’s always been one of my dreams to visit the Great Pyramids of Giza. I am fascinated by ancient Egyptian history. As a kid, I would devour any book on the topic that I could get my hands on, and I always imagined what it would be like to see those majestic structures in real life.

In many countries, a lot of food is wasted. Why do people waste food? How can we reduce the amount of food waste?
Sample Band 8 Essay
Despite the fact that millions of people in the world go hungry every day, a surprisingly large amount of food gets wasted daily in certain parts of the world. In my opinion, the main reason for this is that people in the first-world countries tend to only buy food that is aesthetically pleasing, and fortunately, there are some ways to tackle this issue.
It is shockingly sad to know that large amounts of perfectly edible food in the form of fresh produce get sent to landfills, and the main reason for this is that these foods do not meet the standards of perfection set for fruits and vegetables by consumers and grocery stores. For example, veggies and fruit that are misshapen or have a few spots on them are still good enough to eat, yet they are often left on shelves to rot in favour of something that looks less damaged. In addition, a lot of customers confuse the ‘best by’ and ‘use by’ dates, thinking that foods that have passed their ‘best by’ dates are no longer fit to eat. Another major reason for food wastage is that people often overestimate the amount of produce they require on a weekly or monthly basis, and most of it ends up getting thrown out instead of being used.
There are many ways to reduce the amount of food being wasted, and I think one of the best ideas is to increase people’s awareness of just how much good food is disposed of, only because of our superficial biases as to how food should look. Raising the awareness of the staggering number of people that go hungry in third-world countries would make it harder to throw away an apple just because it is a little bruised. Also, teaching people how to better plan their monthly food requirements would help them not to overspend on food that they do not need; it would be great for the environment and their budget. The role of the government in this endeavour is indispensable as such task would be too great for any smaller organisation.
To conclude, the wasting food is a serious issue that merits increased awareness from both people and the leaders of the world. It is unacceptable to discard any food when there are so many people who are starving, and hopefully our joint effort can help improve the current situation.
