Today’s episode is a small lesson I’ve learned from a year of conversations about greatness. There are no shortcuts and if you’re going to pursue excellence you have to do it one brick at a time. Recently I’ve been laying a new floor, and it’s reminded me of the importance of focusing on one plank at a time, the floor is completed by doing one board at a time.

This last weekend I got to meet a childhood idol of mine, Jim Thome. It got me thinking about the power of heroes. We all have people we look up to growing up. Each person becomes an idol in our lives for various reasons, but they all impact our growth and development and how we choose to pursue things. Now as I am older, I hope to make an impact on someone’s life the way my idols have shaped mine. It’s interesting the power our heroes have on us. We never meet them in most cases, yet their lives impact ours in many ways. How would you feel meeting one of your idols? How would you feel knowing you were someone else’s idol? Keep pursuing greatness, but remember the greater you become, the more people will hope to be you one day.

After my conversation with Coach Tressel, a thought kept lingering in my mind. Why do leaders try to immediately impact change through barking orders? Coach Tressel mentionead his use of asking those around him what they’re thinking and what’s important to them. I love this idea. I think leaders should always take time learning their people and asking how they can help before trying to change everything all at once. There may be something they didn’t know needed attention that would otherwise go unfixed. Be patient as a leader.

As a coach, leader, teacher; we must make sure that we are prepared to help the people we work with succeed. I believe the best way to do that is to continue to practice the things we ask our students to do. Practicing what you coach keeps your skills sharp, puts you in a space to make adjustments to what you cue, and keeps the love of your craft alive. Keep working on yourself and then put that energy into those you work with.

March is full of excitement and craziness in the sports world. We watch as college basketball teams battle it out to see who’s the nation’s top team and enjoy upsets along the way. This year UCLA was the cinderella of the men’s tournament and their epic game against Gonzaga in the Final Four is one for the history books. After that incredible game a single thought ran through my mind and it’s one that says a lot about how we see the world. Did UCLA lose or did Gonzaga win? How you answer that question may indicate how you look at success and failure, or how your focus on outcome or process, listen to today’s episode for more insights.

I want to see more people develop the ability to use their voice. Through practice we can become better communicators and spread our message through our voice. It takes time to get comfortable with the sound of your voice, but it’s an important skill to develop because to lead we must speak. The real world requires communication and those who have the skills to communicate clearly will be at an advantage.

I’ve been reading a lot on competition, success vs failure, why some people rise to challenges and others fall. However, the other day I came across an interesting set of studies about the value of positive thinking and whether or not being always positive is the key to success. It might surprise you that having negative thoughts isn’t as bad as you may think, it all depends on how you use those thoughts. Tune in to find out more!

Building off of last week’s chalk talk, about doing the little things well, I dig into an area I’ve been focusing my attention on to improve. To be great you must do little things well, and focusing on my speech has been an area I’ve placed importance since starting this podcast. I believe that effective and clear communication makes the difference between delivering your message and missing the mark. What are you doing this week to improve? What little thing are you focused on?

They’ve both face adversity through their playing careers, but it has been in very different ways. Today we talk about growth through adversity, learning how to put the team first, and becoming a leader. This is a great interview about the growth we experience through the hard times we face. The other day I had a big interview set up, but I failed to properly communicate with the guest and it led to them having to take an appointment with other clients. This was a communication failure that I made. As with all failures we have a choice to blame others or take ownership for our mistakes and grow from them. I’m hoping that sharing my personal failures will help you understand that we all fail and we must learn from them or be doomed to repeat them.

Success and greatness is happening around us all the time, and that greatness is a gift. It shows us what’s possible, it motivates us to be better, it pushes and lifts us to be great ourselves. It’s time to start to appreciate greatness when it occurs and stop downplaying others success or rooting for people’s failures. I wish everyone great success this year, and I only hope that I can take something from their success to improve my own situation as well. A rising tide lifts all ships!

This episode was a request from one of our listeners who was wondering about pursuing PR’s (personal records). In this episode I discuss the value of PR’s, the importance of good goal setting and how if we do both well we find we continue to improve and chase new records at the same time. Don’t waste time on small minded goals that you can already achieve, it’s time to stretch yourself.

We only have so much energy we can expend before our minds and bodies crave rest. It is up to us to find different ways to recharge and recover from the work we put in each day chasing greatness. It is only once we find this balance that we can fully reach our potential as a person.

We are all a product of the failures in our life. We either choose to dwell on our shortcomings or grow from them. My goal is to erase the negative stigma of failure and to use it as a motivation for future success. In this episode we discuss why I believe failure is essential to success. How to take our failures and grow from them and also how each failure we face pushes us in a new direction.
