All About Grandparents

What is it about the job of being a grandparent that makes it so different from the job of being a parent?

Join Anne as she talks with two friends, Sally and Kathy, about their experiences, not only as grandparents, but also as parents watching their kids be parents. Anne has known them since their kids were toddlers-to-elementary-school ages, and, now, Sally’s son and one of Kathy’s daughters are parents themselves.

Join Anne and Elena as they talk about what it’s like when your parents grow older, and, you begin to function not only as their ‘parent’ (by making decisions for them, taking care of them), but also remain their child (in their eyes).

Tools:

  • Enjoy the time you have with them ….. it won’t last forever.
  • Let go of old hurts … be grateful for who they are, who you are, and the time you do have.
  • Be present …. When you are with them, when you are talking with them, be 100% present (way easier than 98% present!)
  • Be kind to yourself. Be sure to include yourself in the mix of your life with them. Don’t give yourself up!

Is it possible for two people with different opinions about so much to connect in ways that work not only for them, but also for the kids?

Join Anne & Chelsey.

"People get tangled up when they think they should be somebody that they're not. And they try really hard to be the parent they think they should be, rather than simply being the parent that they are."

Tools:

  • Don’t make yourself wrong. If you have a difficult encounter with the other parent/ other adults, allow yourself to move on. Shift from thinking you are wrong to you tried something and it didn’t work, so try something different. And of course, if you need to clean something up, do that, and move on...
