Remembering Officer Tara O'Sullivan
You never want to lose an officer; it's honestly the worst-case scenario. Early in my career, we lost one of our own. It was one of the hardest days I've ever experienced and a stark reality of this job that every 911 dispatcher has to understand. This week’s episode falls on the anniversary of Officer Tara O'Sullivan's passing, and I felt compelled to remember her.
Tara served with bravery, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to her community. Her sacrifice is a profound reminder of the dangers our law enforcement officers face every day to keep us safe. Tara's vibrant spirit and passion for helping others left an indelible mark on everyone she met. Her legacy of service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Conferences hold a unique charm, particularly those focused on emergency dispatchers. Our profession remains largely unfamiliar to many, yet a few times a year, hundreds of individuals eagerly travel by car or plane, driven by the sole purpose of connecting and learning from those who have faced challenging calls, gained valuable insights, discovered innovative approaches to age-old tasks, and are eager to share their knowledge with those on the front lines.
Recently, I had the privilege of participating in the second annual Be The Difference conference held in Knoxville, TN. This event, hosted by the Denise Amberlee Foundation and in collaboration with The Healthy Dispatcher, stands out as a poignant example of a tragic story evolving into an inspirational mission. I am genuinely grateful for the opportunity to attend, be a vendor, and play a role in this transformative gathering.
A special acknowledgment goes to the Denise Amberlee Foundation for consistently setting the standard in dispatcher training. The extended sessions, comprehensive workbooks provided to attendees, and the impactful supersessions collectively create an environment dedicated to education and making a real difference. It's heartening to see organizations like the Denise Amberlee Foundation leading the way in elevating the training standards for dispatchers.

In this week's episode of Let’s Talk Dispatch, we're joined by an incredible guest who has made a remarkable transition from a 16-year career as a dispatcher to an exciting role as California P.O.S.T.'s Public Safety Dispatch Program Manager.
For those of you unfamiliar with P.O.S.T., it stands for Peace Officer Standards and Training, a vital institution established in 1959 by the California Legislature to set and maintain the highest standards for law enforcement. In 1968, the very first 911 call set the stage for the indispensable role of dispatchers, leading to their inclusion under the P.O.S.T. umbrella.
Our guest, Jennifer, shares her inspiring journey and experiences. You won't believe that when she began her career, her agency didn't even have a CAD (Computer-Aided Dispatch) system, and during thunderstorms, they had to use pencils to switch between systems to avoid electrical shocks. Jennifer's story is both fascinating and eye-opening.
Join us as we dive deep into Jennifer's incredible journey, learn about the fascinating world of public safety dispatch, and explore how innovation has transformed the field. You won't want to miss this enlightening and engaging conversation.

Last week Michigan State University was another institution added to the list of schools that have experienced a shooting.
As a youth, I vividly remember the columbine school shooting and how it felt so foreign; now, school shootings are something children are trained to react to.
As an adult and now a dispatcher, I have sat through active shooter training, been prepped on my department’s procedures, and taken phone calls reporting potential threats.
The dispatcher who handled the incident said it best, she was doing her job, the job she is trained to do, is prepared for, and hopes will never have to utilize the training.
February 13th, 2023, was a day like any other until it wasn’t.
Dispatchers are trained to respond in a crisis, and yet in some states are not considered first responders. This needs to change because the world needs more dispatchers.
