In this podcast, I interview three foreigners who reside in Chile to find out where they come from, how they arrived in this country and what their perspectives on Chilean society and the future of the country are.
John Bartlett is an English journalist covering Latin American politics from Santiago de Chile for The Guardian. In this episode, we talk about the origins of his interest in South America, his professional experiences in the continent, social unrest in the country, the highly polarised presidential elections, the media landscape in Chile and how foreign correspondents fit into it.
Rob Cartwright is an Australian actor living in the Maule Region countryside. In this episode, we discuss how he found his passion for acting, what led him to leave Australia to settle in Chile, his experiences in the country, change and social unrest and how Rob has managed to understand it, and we reminisce a bit about our experience working together in concerts for children organised by the Teatro Regional del Maule.
Michael Cooper is a US-born horn professor teaching at the Universidad de Talca, and former director of the School of Music at the same university. In this episode, Michael and I talk about Chilean society, his remarkable adaptation to a new culture, cultural differences between the US and Chile, social change and upheaval since the 2019 estallido social, the effect of social media in political polarisation and the decay of civil discourse, and what needs to change in Chile for people to be able to listen to each other.
