How should Christians respond when following Jesus brings opposition?

In Luke 22:39-53 we are shown the passion of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane, the week before His crucifixion. The question for us to answer is, how’s our passion? Are we just a casual bystander as the events of life are played out before us? Do we sit idly by and watch others make a difference for the Kingdom of God? Is there a Gethsemane in our Christian experience or do we choose the easy way? God’s way leads through the garden of Gethsemane - the good news is, victory is on the other side.

As a church, we’ve been walking through the Gospel of Luke for a long time now, understanding that Luke was telling the story of Jesus’ life and teachings, death and resurrection, after spending time interviewing eyewitnesses and researching the facts. We’ve arrived at Luke 20, which talks about the last week before Jesus’ crucifixion. Today we are looking at an interesting, potentially difficult scripture passage from Luke 19, The Parable of the Ten Minas. As Jesus is approaching Jerusalem, there is a great expectation that he will complete the arrival of the Kingdom of God and that everything will change immediately. When a blind man called out to Jesus for healing with nothing but his faith, he was given sight. Faith is a journey, not a guilt trip. Sometimes it feels like understanding a complex math equation. What comes to your mind when someone mentions God? Does it make you nervous? Does it make you smile? Does it make you angry? There are a great many ideas out there about God’s existence and how we ought to relate to Him.

If the sins of the world is what has placed Jesus to death on the cross - his defeat of death is not just a defeat of death, but of sin—its power, its implications and its consequences are all defeated. In today's world, we're a bit unclear about what love really means. It's like that messy junk drawer at home where you toss everything you don't know what to do with. Because we've overused the word "love" so much, it has lost its punch and impact in our culture. When we talk about God's love, especially in the coming of Jesus during Advent, it doesn't quite have that wow factor anymore.

So, this Christmas Eve, let's dig into the real deal of love – not the weak, surface-level stuff. It's not the same love you have for a tasty smoked brisket, even though that's good. This Christmas, let's focus on a genuine love that's there for all of us with the arrival of Jesus.

As Jesus was preparing to face the cross, He told His disciples in John 14:27: "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."The dictionary defines peace as "a state of mental or physical quiet or tranquility" or "the absence or cessation of war." Also as "a state of reconciliation after strife or enmity." Jesus gives us the third of these: "A state of reconciliation after strife or enmity." He also gives a new definition of peace that is not included in the dictionary definition, "rest for the soul." It is only Christ who can speak peace to your heart. Only Christ can bring us peace. This world is being shaken by spiritual forces that have men's hearts failing them for fear, but in Christ there is peace.

**In many cases today the church has become a place where like-minded people come together to take care of their own. I**n today's sermon, we are going to see that people are looking for a sign or proof of who Jesus is when the evidence has been right in front of them. To give you some context to our story, Jesus had just cast a demon out of a man who was mute. And some of the people who were witnesses didn’t want to accept Jesus as the Messiah, the chosen one. They are looking for any way to reject Jesus. So they tested him by asking for a sign from heaven. Let this truth sink in today. Your acceptance or rejection of Jesus does not change who He is. It changes what He can do in your life. In our story Jesus is going to explain a sign to them that should be compelling for their belief.

If you have been with us previously, you’ll remember that in verses 1-4, Jesus taught a pattern of prayer for His followers called The Lord’s Prayer. Who’s your neighbour? Is it the person who lives in close proximity to you? Is it someone who lives in your neighbourhood or on your block? Is it someone with whom you can identify? Someone who thinks as you do; or who believes as you do?
Today we will look at one of Jesus’ most famous parables as we
continue our journey through the Gospel of Luke. It is the Parable of the Good
Samaritan and it is found in Luke 10:25-37.

We’re going to be looking at Luke chapter 10: 1-24 today, and what we get to experience is a narrative story about some of the followers of Jesus taking the mission and the message of Jesus personally.

We’re continuing in our series on Luke and we’re now at the end of Luke 9. Jesus has been speaking lately about His coming sacrifice – which is about four months down the road. Often, people look at this event as something that Jesus got caught up in and just could not avoid. But it wasn’t that way at all. As we look at the testimony of the four gospel writers, we see revealed to us a carefully thought out plan by Jesus to carry out all that the Father had given Him to do.

**Today we look at Luke 9:46-50. Previously Jesus is established as a divine miracle worker who is actually the long-awaited Messiah or deliver of the people of Israel. He is introducing a new Kingdom, different than the one they presently live in, and there are glimpses that it is different than everyone had expected.

Today we are looking at Luke 9:37-43. This story is a blatant statement – we cannot deal with the evil that exists in the world by our own powers. Sometimes we place our hope in educational systems, corrections, intervention programs, advocacy groups and more - all of which have their appropriate place and role in society – but all fall short. The world experiences evil, the Christian faith is pretty upfront about it – but it also presents a solution that the rest of the world and its systems do not – Jesus.

This week we continue our series on the book of Luke in which we ask; Who is Jesus? God not only wants you to experience his glory he wants you to reflect it to those around you. Don’t spend your time camped out in past experiences, past prayer times, past youth camps. Allow those moments to catapult you into the next season God has for you. Don’t turn methodology into meth-idolatry. Jesus is always wanting to move you forward to a closer relationship with Him and a greater partnership in sharing his message with those around you.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been talking about the subject of Lordship; of what it truly means to be a follower of Jesus Christ, looking at Jesus’ own words on the subject.

**This week we are asking "Who is Jesus?"

When you choose to follow Jesus, you are putting your faith and allegiance in the God who has the power to miraculously change your life - and the one who loves you more than you can ever imagine. This same God shares that He will walk beside us, encourage us, restore us, and empower us through the Holy Spirit and through the local church. He doesn't leave us to walk through this life on our own.**

God can do more through your surrender than he can in your control. So, here’s the question for you, are you being faithful with what God has given you? What is God asking you to do? What is it that you have? It may not look like much but until you offer it to Jesus He cannot use it, He cannot multiply and bless it. What talent, what time, what commitment, what act of service, what financial commitment is God calling you to bring to him today? Jesus is not asking you to multiply what you have. He will do the work, he will bless it. What He is looking for are people who are willing to have the miracle occur through them.

Today we’re going to pick back up our series on the Gospel of Luke, which we’ve entitled “Investigating Jesus.” The reason that we chose that title is because of what the author, Luke, said, as he began this Gospel. Beginning in chapter 1 and verse 1 he wrote, “Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.” – Luke 1:1-4

In case you might have missed the first parts of this series, you need to know that Luke was researching and writing this while the eyewitnesses to the events were still alive and still available. As you see as you read this Gospel, Luke was a stickler for detail and, as he said, he researched carefully. Why? “So that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.”

"For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit." 1 Peter 3:18

As Jesus is traveling along the road towards Jerusalem the people would throw their cloaks and palm branches on the road, as today we would lay out a red carpet for royalty. They began to shout “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord” - a Psalm written hundreds of years previous, but that pointed ahead to the coming of the Messiah.

Today as you listen, you may need to be reminded. It's not your work that frees you; it’s the power of Jesus. And it's not your work after you are freed that is required. Instead you are invited to sit at the feet of Jesus. The very place God will mold your heart.

What storm do you need to invite Jesus into right now? You don’t have to try and make it through in your own strength. Jesus is in the midst of the waves and He is with you.

Today, we want to present to you one of Jesus’ most radical teachings: family. Christianity is constitutively communal. We’re called to follow Jesus individually and in community because how we relate to one another is as important as how we relate to God as Jesus taught us in Matthew 22:36-40. Community is God’s ‘school of love’ where we become spiritually formed, learning to become more like Jesus as we worship, fellowship, serve each other, and serve our world; all things we cannot do alone.

Consider carefully how you listen, because how you listen will be
evident in how you live. Let him restore and grow in you. And may that shine
brightly into a world that is filled with so much darkness.

We are Clearview Community Church, one church in four locations in the township, and surrounding area, of Clearview, Ontario. We exist to see people become fully devoted followers of Jesus.

Are you tending to the garden of your life? What is the state of the soil of your heart? Are you hard-hearted? Do you have distracting weeds? Or are you ready to produce a harvest? For Jesus, the heart of the matter is the matter of the heart. He is inviting you to give Him yours.

Don’t believe the lie that you are too far gone to be accepted by God. In fact, maybe your circumstance is helping you to see how much you need God. If this is you, we want you to reach out. We're here to walk with you in your journey to discover that Jesus is worth following with everything in your being and that He is relentlessly kind.

How do we handle unmet expectations? How do we navigate our doubts? Know that even in our disappointments, and disillusionments, the Lord is at work and is building His Kingdom. May we consider how we will see Him at work today.

God is with you. God’s presence, the same presence that indwelled Jesus, is with you. God’s presence that was in Capernaum and healed the servant is with you now. Jesus heals simply by word because He is God, He has authority. You may not see Jesus physically but He is with you through the Holy Spirit. He just has to say the
word. Put your trust in Him.

What is the foundation of your life? We all build our lives on something. Jesus is inviting you to build your life on a solid foundation: life with God.

In your life and mine we will come up against obstacles that are simply too great to overcome. What do we do in those moments? The answer to that question defines us in many ways. What do we do when the rubber meets the road and it’s no longer about pretense and appearance; it’s about what we truly believe?

Seeking Jesus in our annual Week of Prayer is a cherished opportunity to begin a new year. God rewards those who diligently seek Him. Those who are hungry and thirsty for the life God gives, find it in Jesus; He is Living Water.

For those who are followers of Jesus: Our prayer is that we would be a reminder our great hope and promise. As Christians we live in a tension of 'already and not yet'. We look back at Jesus triumph over our enemies of Satan, sin and death and know He has the victory. But we also know there is coming a day when He will establish himself as King. In the meantime, How are we living in light of Jesus return?

Isaiah 7:14, centuries before Jesus arrived as a baby said, “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.”

God does what He promises - and the promise is true for the world and for you. God is with us - make room for Jesus.

This Christmas we celebrate peace because peace is a gift from God; a gift of wholeness, and of shalom-relationship between us and God. It is given through the
life, death, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ.

At the end of the day, the question always come back to this: what will we do with
what God has done for us? The Christmas Story leaves us with two options; acceptance or rejection. Is there room in our hearts for the Lord or we will shut the door to Him and miss out on the joy of life with God? What will we choose? What about you?

The Gospel of Jesus is the good news of a transformed life. The truthof Jesus is made effective and alive when we practice the wayof Jesus - and that is what Jesus is doing - forming a new kind of people - transformed by love so that they can overflow in love.

Who is 'blessed'? Jesus has His own take on reality, the 'good life', and who God deems as blessed - it is as subversive in His day as it is in ours. The challenge for us today is whether or not we choose to believe Christ's narrative about reality over any other. Life with God is the good life - truth we must accept and live out daily.

Luke records Jesus' next move. Who does Jesus think He is? He is the rightful King - and now He's calling to Himself a new kind of people - new creations - people whos hearts are made new - who prevail over evil with love not violence or coercion.

The twelve. These men, chosen by Jesus, would be near Him always, watching, listening, conforming to Jesus and His love. These same twelve go on to change the world - in Jesus' name.

Following Jesus is, firstly, about having our hearts right with God and,
secondly, maintaining good relationships with people. It doesn’t matter what
you profess, what dogma you espouse or what church you may have voting
privileges in. Do you love God and is that reflected in how you live your life
and how you treat others? Do you walk daily in a growing relationship with God?

Do you have a sweet spirit that causes others to want to be around you? Do you forgive? Do you have compassion on those in need? Do you love your neighbor as yourself and treat them the way you want to be treated? Do you put the needs of others ahead of your own? Do you look for mercy or justice when someone has done you wrong? Do you love? Good questions.

What is God doing in your life today that doesn’t fit the old way of doing things? What has Jesus come to heal in your life? To transform in your life? What is he calling you to leave behind? What vulnerability has God decided that today…today is the day that we deal with that?

In this short story of Jesus in Luke 5 we find that those who were uninvited to the world, are invited to the very table of Jesus; the very table of God. It's a message that is as subversive then as it is today. God has invited all. Who will accept?

Throughout Jesus’ ministry, He tried to bring this perspective to the people to who He ministered. Yes, He did heal people; and yes, He fed people. He did that because He cared, He alleviated suffering wherever He went because He genuinely loved people. He still does. His true followers do as well. But what He wants all of us to clearly understand is that this… is all temporary. What is truly important is the heart, because when God created humanity He breathed into our nostrils the breath of life and we became living souls. He made us for eternity.

Instead of living in, Fear, Resentment, Hurt, Revenge, Bitterness, Anxiety — Will you give God thanks today? What's your routine for gratitude?

May we never forget, that though there is much gain in life with God, there is always a cost in a life lived for God. What are you sacrificing? What are you giving? What are you doing for God and for others?

And herein lies the power of the church; a church that truly follows Christ is
the presence of the light of the world living in us. The Church, is still the hope of the world.

Because we can draw near to God through Christ, we can now also draw near to each other in sincerity of heart. Christianity is constitutively communal and it is the means by which God transforms us into people of love. However uncomfortable 'community' may be at times, it will always bring us more life than we can give to it.

Some things in the Christian walk are uncomfortable. The heart of being a follower of Jesus requires us to step out of our comfort into the uncomfortable at times. True change can only happen when you are willing to be challenged to grow rather than affirmed where you are.

Jesus has the authority over darkness - His Kingdom directly confronts the kingdom of darkness and Jesus is victor.

How did Jesus understand the presence of evil in the world, what was His response to it, and what does is it say about Him?

It is not enough for us to say that Jesus is a Saviour, or even the Saviour. With Mary, the mother of Jesus Himself, we must say, “My spirit has rejoiced in God my Saviour”.

This is always the question that we should arrive at when we hear the Word of God – what difference does it make to me? Jesus raised up disciples to follow in His footsteps, and those disciples raised up disciples to follow them as they followed Christ and on and on it goes until finally it is passed down to us. We inherit this legacy – this call of God to impact the world for good; to love the unlovable; to embrace the untouchable; to comfort those who mourn; to feed the hungry; bind up the broken; to shine a light in the darkness. That is the call; the question today is, will we respond?

The great temptations that face our lives also faced Jesus. Where every human being has failed, Jesus has been victorious giving credit to the claim He is Lord. In this passage Luke records the temptations of Jesus in the wilderness and his ability to persevere over the satan; the enemy of our soul.

Jesus, the Son of God, has also the title 'Son of Man'. Jesus comes from a lineage, from a people group, who has a history with the God of the bible and He also comes from God the Father. This is a profound mystery and a gracious gift; that God would enter our world, and submit Himself to every part of it.

This is the legacy we inherit; the life that we’re called to imitate. In Ephesians 5:1-2 Paul writes, “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”
We have the example of Christ - the example of love - to walk towards in becoming people of love.

Luke continues the story of the God of Israel who comes to live among His people. This is the world Jesus grows up in and subjects Himself to.

"Jesus is _________." How do you finish this sentence? How have you come to your conclusions? What sources do you rely on? Let's continue to 'Investigate Jesus' together.

A.W. Tozer said, "What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” What we think about God will shape our destiny because we become that which we worship. Who is God to you today?

What would it mean for your if God showed up in front of you today? What would it mean for you if God showed up as a baby? What it meant for those Jesus arrived to is found in Luke chapters one and two and their response is joy and hope - a Saviour has come, and His name is Jesus.

This is the song of an old man who just had a miracle happen in his life. All of Zechariah’s disappointments were met with the hope of God sending our rescuer. What comes out of hope is a song; what's inside of us will come out.

God gave us the law in the Old Testament to demonstrate to us that we are all sinners. No matter how much we try we cannot lift ourselves out of our sad predicament. Here, in the prophecy of the birth of John we see God calling us to repentance – to change – to acknowledge that we need Him. And finally, in Christ’s life, death, and resurrection is revealed the Gospel. Through Him there is hope for all of us.

In this passage we encounter the joy of Mary and the her joy comes in the form of a song. Mary's was a joy that compelled her to lift her voice in a song of praise. Praise is an appropriate response from each of us who have received the grace, mercy and forgiveness of God.

At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”

Luke 1:39-45

Mary is willing to let go of her comfort, her security, her identity, her reputation, her marriage, and she doesn’t blink, “I’m the servant of the Lord, whatever he would have from me.” Mary should not be our object of faith, but she should be an example of faith. Every man and woman should aspire to have faith like Mary’s, to love God, to trust God, and to serve Jesus like she did.

"A longing fulfilled is a tree of life." - Proverbs 13:12
Luke begins his account of Jesus with the story of two characters who have been waiting faithfully for the promise of God. Luke records their longings being fulfilled by a faithful God; both for a son of their own, and for the promise of the 'Son of Man'.

In this new series, we walk through the account of the Good News according to Luke. Each week we will study and expound on Luke's writings about Jesus the Christ. Join us as we lean into what it means to be found by Jesus; belonging to His community, in a world where His Kingdom has been inaugurated. This is Good News indeed.

Phillip Brooks said, "Let every man and woman count himself immortal. Let him catch the revelation of Jesus in his resurrection. Let him say not merely, 'Christ is risen,' but 'I shall rise.'"

Death where is your sting? Where is your victory? Thanks be to God, we have victory through Jesus Christ our Lord.

He is risen!

Do this in remembrance, proclaiming the Lord's death until He comes again.

We will be partaking in the Lord's Supper to remember Good Friday - please have your emblems (bread and juice/wine).

The Way of Jesus, coupled with the Truth of Jesus, will lead to the Life of Jesus and it is through Jesus we have access to God the Father. To quote the author of John. "Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent." Jesus is Life Eternal.

"Apart from Me, you can do nothing" - Jesus.

Jesus didn't just come into this world to make bad people good. He came to make dead people alive. Without God our spirits remain dead and are still bound from entering the Kingdom of God. With God we can 'bear much fruit' and lasting fruit, from a life that is rooted in Love.

Each of us have wandered away from God and followed our own paths. The result is separation from God because of sin. But Jesus has come to bring us back to God; to bring the wandering sheep home. Walk through the Door and into the fold of God. Go to Jesus.

Jesus made the claim that He is the Light of the world. Not "a" light - He is "the" light. Without Jesus we are left in the darkness but with Jesus we have the light of life and have illumination to guide us. This is good news for those who find themselves wanting to escape the darkness. For others, this is not good news. The same light that guides is the same light that exposes. Some love the darkness and others love the light. Jesus is calling you today; "Come to the Light"

"This is my body broken for you" - Jesus. The sustenance for souls will never be fulfilled by the empty promises of the world; upward mobility, power plays, humanism and hedonism. Instead, it is fueled, sustained, and strengthened by a relationship with Love. Jesus is the Bread of the Good Life.

Have you ever asked, "What is God like?". A.W. Tozer said, "What comes to mind when you think about God is the more important thin about you". God helps us understand who He is by giving us His name. God has a name. He is "I AM" and He is Jesus.

As for this church, this one church in four locations we call Clearview Community Church, it’s not luck, or the breaks that have helped us have a good year - it’s the fact that our God has been faithful. Aren’t you glad that the church doesn’t belong to us, or the pastor, or the Board, or to the denomination. Jesus said in Matt. 16:18 “I will build My Church.”

Our vision guides us to our destination. So, let's talk about where we're headed and let's get there together.

Do we exemplify 'love' the way Jesus would intend us to? This is the challenge: to receive freely, and then freely give. What is your aim? What is your goal in life? Where does loving like Jesus fit into all of it?

This body of believers is nothing if not a group of people who know what it means to be forgiven, cleansed and set free. We’re people just like you. Some have been forgiven of more than you will have to be forgiven of, some less, but we’re all just people, saved by grace. We want to love you because Christ loved us. That is our message to our community. That’s why we do what we do.

"But for the the grace of God, there go I." - Everyone is someone for whom Christ died. The Church is the only organization in the world that should exist for its 'non members'. We belong. You belong.

Clearview Community Church exists to see people become fully devoted followers of Jesus. This means that we include/exclude methods to help us reach our great commission. In this message Pastor Clayton introduces 'What's the point?' and the 'Why we do'.

How can we help but worship a God who allows us to come to him in such a
poverty stricken way, as ourselves, honest and humble. This is what the church
ought to look like.

Psalm 24 invites each of us to declare to our own heart, to the sticky door that we don’t want to open – “Open up in the name of the King!”

Pastor Clayton leads us to pray with the confidence of God's character. When we know our God, we will know ourselves, and we will live accordingly.

Pastor Zac opens our annual Week of Prayer by walking us through Psalm 24:1.
"The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it;"

Why Pray? God’s heart has always been, and will always be, for people. But God has chosen to use human instrumentality to that end. He’s chosen to use you and me. We’re the latter day version of that motley crew of individuals who followed Jesus around. They had been called out of checkered pasts, out of their lower to middle class lives and been challenged to become “fishers of men.” They were called to be partners with Jesus in His plan to change the world.

Pastor Jason teaches on the essential basics of prayer. "And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests." Ephesians 6:18

Imagine the life you're dreaming of. Maybe not so much about what you can get or accomplish but about who you will become. Who will you become? Who are you becoming? What do you need to do this year, and today, to take another step closer?
