What happens when you stop asking "Can I?" and start asking "What else can I do?"

In this episode, I'm joined by Avery Fiordaliso, founder of Iron Life Coaching, whose journey from self-proclaimed non-athlete to Ironman coach is really a story about identity, confidence, and believing you're capable of more than you once imagined.

But this conversation isn't just about endurance sports.

It's about leaving a successful corporate career to build something of your own, redefining success beyond titles and salaries, and creating a business that supports the life you actually want to live.

We also talk about the difference between work-life balance and work-life integration, why consistency matters more than perfection, and the mindset shifts that help you keep moving forward—whether you're training for a race or building a business.

People often tell me I'm "so organized." But after wrapping up another busy swim team season, I found myself thinking... maybe organization isn't the real reason I've been able to stay consistent with my podcast, newsletter, clients, and even a six-year Peloton streak.

In this episode, I'm sharing why I think we confuse outcomes with personality, the difference between discipline and sustainability, and how simple systems help me build a business that keeps going—even when life gets busy. If you've ever felt like you're carrying your business around in your head, this one's for you. 🫶

What happens when the career path you originally planned no longer fits the life you actually want?

In this episode, I’m joined by Jamie Hass, whose journey has taken her from corporate marketing, to co-owning a childcare center for 13 years, to building a virtual coaching business designed to support women in the realities of everyday life.

This conversation felt like such a grounded reminder that sustainable businesses aren’t built through hustle alone.

Jamie shares what she learned transitioning from a brick-and-mortar business into the online space, including:

  • Why systems matter more than motivation
  • The mental load that comes with “wearing all the hats”
  • How perfectionism can quietly keep you stuck
  • What it actually looks like to make progress in busy seasons of life
  • Why small, consistent action beats overwhelming plans every time

We also talk about balancing motherhood and business, navigating summer without losing momentum completely, and building a business that actually fits your real life—not just the version that looks good online.

If you’ve been feeling busy all day but somehow still not moving forward, this episode is for you.

As summer gets underway, I've been asking myself a different question: not "What needs to get done?" but "What can stop depending on me?"

In this episode, I'm sharing the hidden costs of being the person who remembers everything in your business. We'll talk about the financial leaks that happen when things fall through the cracks, the mental load of carrying it all, and why your business shouldn't take up space that belongs to the life you're trying to build.

Plus, I'll share one simple example of how a small system can free up more mental space this summer.

What looks like a “perfect” business on the outside is rarely accidental.

In this episode, I’m joined by Brooke Kromer, a luxury real estate agent based in 30A, Florida, who works with athletes, high-net-worth buyers, and investors to help them find not just a property—but a lifestyle.

Brooke shares her unconventional path from growing up in the NFL world to sports reporting, and how a pivot during COVID led her to build a thriving real estate business in one of the most sought-after beach markets in the country.

We talk about:

  • How she turned lifelong exposure into a strategic advantage
  • What high-end clients actually need (beyond just a home)
  • The difference between selling real estate and guiding investments
  • How she’s built a team with complementary strengths instead of duplication
  • What it really looks like to create a high-touch, personalized client experience

If you’ve ever felt like other people “just found their thing,” this episode is a reminder that most successful businesses are built by connecting the dots over time.

This one took me a while to process.

A few months ago, I ran my first-ever half marathon: the Disney Princess Half Marathon. And while I expected the experience to be about running, I realized pretty quickly it was actually about something much bigger.

Trust.

Trusting yourself before certainty exists.
Trusting the ordinary reps.
Trusting that consistency matters even when progress feels invisible.
Trusting that you can keep showing up before you fully know how things will turn out.

In this episode, I’m sharing the real behind-the-scenes of training for and completing the race — from injuries and superstition, to awkward Main Street moments, to realizing the finish line felt a lot less cinematic than I expected.

This isn’t really an episode about running.

It’s a reflection on business ownership, consistency, identity, motherhood, courage, and learning to trust yourself a little more every time you try something hard.

I think that lesson is going to stay with me a lot longer than the medal.

What does it take to build something parents trust—and kids actually love?

In this episode, I’m joined by Andrea Barbalich, Editorial Director of The Week Junior, a weekly news magazine designed to help kids ages 8–14 understand what’s happening in the world in a way that’s thoughtful, engaging, and age-appropriate.

Andrea shares the behind-the-scenes story of launching The Week Junior in the U.S. in March 2020—right as the world shut down—and what it took to build a brand from the ground up in the middle of uncertainty (and plenty of skepticism about print). From hand-selecting her team to establishing the editorial voice and rhythm of a weekly 32-page publication, she walks through the real decisions that shaped the magazine from day one.

We also talk about the responsibility of covering complex, often difficult news topics for children, and how her team approaches that work with care—focusing on clarity, balance, and trust. That trust, built with both kids and parents, has been a key part of the magazine’s growth and impact.

This conversation goes beyond publishing. It’s about intentionality, leadership, and what it looks like to build something that truly makes a difference—something that sparks curiosity, builds confidence, and stays with people long after they experience it.

👯‍♀️ Special Guests: Sammy & Gracie (my twin daughters)

🗓️ Recorded after Take Your Kids to Work Day 2026

This has quietly become one of my favorite episodes to record every year.

My daughters—11-year-old identical twins—have been on the podcast a few times now, and each year the conversation shifts a little as they get older, more independent, and more aware of what’s going on around them.

They’ve grown up watching me leave my corporate job and build this business from home. In past years, they’ve “come to work” with me—but this year, they went to work with their dad instead.

So we recorded these conversations separately, and I asked them almost all the same questions.

What came out of it was equal parts funny, honest, and surprisingly insightful.

There’s a lot we talk about on this podcast—systems, strategy, making your business easier to carry—but this episode is a good reminder that sometimes the simplest perspectives are the ones that stick.

You’ve had this happen before.

A potential client says yes.
You send the quote, contract, or invoice…

And then things go quiet.

Suddenly the questions start creeping in:

Did they change their mind?
Did they forget?
Should I follow up?

This moment is incredibly common in service-based businesses — and it’s where a lot of deals quietly stall.

In this episode, I'm walking through the "follow-up gap" — that space between someone saying “yes” and actually completing the next step — and why it often has less to do with interest and more to do with timing, attention, and how we communicate.

If you’ve ever hesitated to follow up because you didn’t want to seem pushy, this episode will shift how you think about it.

Free Workshop: Build a Smarter Document Reminder Strategy in 17hats

Design well-timed email and text reminders that feel personal — even though they’re automated.

Running a business comes with a mental load that most people don’t talk about.

Not the big projects or strategic decisions — but the constant background tracking:

  • Who still needs a follow-up.
  • Which invoice hasn’t been paid.
  • Whether someone signed their contract yet.
  • Remembering when a client said they’d “get back to you.”

None of these tasks take long individually, but together they create a quiet mental load that can make running a business feel heavier than it needs to.

So many solopreneurs assume the solution is hiring help — when often the real opportunity is creating better support through systems.

🎧 Listen now to learn how small changes behind the scenes can make your business feel lighter — and a little closer to the fairytale you hoped it would be.

Episode 144: Start at the Front Door: A Spring Reset for Your Business

Spring cleaning isn’t about crisis.

It’s about circulation.

In this episode, I’m sharing a behind-the-scenes look at recording during a literal New Jersey blizzard, the decluttering session that unexpectedly boosted my energy, and a confession: I procrastinated this episode harder than I’d like to admit.

Because here’s the truth — dust is just deferred decisions.

And that buildup? It happens in our businesses too.

If things are “technically working,” it’s easy to tolerate small inefficiencies… until the mental load starts to feel heavier than it needs to.

So instead of overhauling everything, we’re starting at the front door.

I’ll walk you through a simple, tactical place to begin your seasonal edit: your lead management process. What happens when someone fills out your contact form? Are they guessing what’s next? Or are you professional by design?

You don’t need a brand-new business.

You need to breathe inside the one you built.

You don’t always get the full five-year blueprint in business.

Sometimes you get a clear season.
Sometimes you get a quiet one.
And sometimes you hit a speed bump and think… okay, now what?

This 10-minute solo episode is a grounded reframe for those moments.

Not a checklist.
Not a dramatic pivot.
Just a steadier way to think about uncertainty, slow seasons, and the in-between chapters of building a sustainable business.

If you’ve ever felt tempted to overhaul everything because things felt unclear — this is the episode to come back to.

Tune in for a practical mindset shift on choosing direction over certainty, using planning containers (like a 12-week sprint or seasonal strategy), and why long-term business growth requires calm leadership instead of panic decisions.

And if you’re curious about the Marketing Planning Reset I mentioned in the episode, you can join the waitlist here.

Whether you’re in a clear season or a quieter one, this episode is one to bookmark for the next time you can’t see the whole staircase.

February is the season of love — and this year, I want you to turn some of that attention toward your business. ❤️

In this episode, we’re talking about what it really looks like to love your business long-term — not the honeymoon phase, not the Instagram highlight-reel version, but the kind of relationship that actually lasts.

Because most business owners don’t fall out of love with their work.

As your business grows, the logistics grow too. Emails, invoices, scheduling, follow-ups… all the things that quietly take up space and energy. And when there’s no room left, the work you love gets buried.

In this episode, I’ll walk you through:

  • Why losing excitement doesn’t mean you chose the wrong business
  • How the “honeymoon phase” shows up in both relationships and business
  • Why quick fixes (and shiny features) aren’t always the answer
  • How intentional design creates room for your spark to shine again
  • Why awareness is the most important first step before changing anything

I’m also sharing what I’ve been working on behind the scenes this year — refining my offers, rethinking support, and why system audits have become a non-negotiable starting point in my work with clients.

If you’re using 17hats or Flodesk and your business feels heavier than it should, a simple audit might be the clarity you need. No pressure. No commitment. Just a clear look at what’s working, what’s draining you, and what’s possible.

👉 Book a free consult (your coffee date) to see if an audit is a good next step.

The modern fairytale isn’t about loving every moment.
It’s about building a business you don’t want to leave. 🫶

Running a business can feel a lot like working on a puzzle.

You’ve got pieces everywhere — ideas, tools, workflows, client needs — and you know they’re supposed to fit together… but sometimes the picture just doesn’t feel complete.

With National Puzzle Day coming up, I’m leaning into one of my favorite metaphors and breaking down how puzzles and business are surprisingly similar — especially for solopreneurs navigating the messy middle of growth.

In this episode, I’m sharing:

  • Why January can feel overwhelming (even when nothing is “wrong”)
  • A simple PUZZLE framework to help you figure out what’s missing
  • Three different ways people naturally approach building a business
  • Why support systems don’t replace your thinking — they protect your progress
  • How to stop feeling scattered and start placing the right next piece

If your business feels heavy, incomplete, or just slightly off right now, this episode will help you zoom out, get grounded, and move forward with more clarity.

This is a special bonus episode of Build Your Own Fairytale, recorded live, in real life, while I was in Nashville with two of my favorite fellow systems strategists and business friends.

What started as a casual “let’s finally get together in person” trip quickly turned into something much bigger — real conversations, honest pushback, whiteboard brainstorming, and one brand-new business idea that went from thought to action in under 24 hours.

If you listened to the previous episode about consistency and being stuck in no man’s land, this conversation is the natural next chapter.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • How three “competitors” became genuine business besties
  • Why being in the room together still matters (even in an online world)
  • What actually helps ideas move out of no man’s land and into momentum
  • And what happens when smart women give each other honest, supportive pushback

You’ll also hear how this Nashville trip sparked early conversations around creating intentional space for business owners — part strategy, part systems, part breathing room — and why we’re inviting listeners into that conversation from the very beginning.

If you’ve ever felt stuck between knowing what you want to do and actually doing it, this episode is for you.

What if the hardest part of building a business isn’t the beginning… or the end — but the middle?

In this episode, I’m sharing a powerful lesson that hit me in the middle of a long, sweaty run while training for my upcoming half marathon. My instructor introduced the concept of No Man’s Land — the point in a long run where you’re too far from the start to feel excited, but too far from the finish to see the payoff.

And honestly? It felt exactly like solopreneurship.

We talk about:

  • Why the “messy middle” is where so many business owners get stuck
  • The mindset shifts that help you keep going when motivation dips
  • Why discomfort doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong — it often means you’re growing
  • How working smarter (not harder) becomes essential as your business grows
  • The systems that help reduce mental load and create breathing room again

And to kick off the new year, I’m excited to be partnering with 17hats on a giveaway designed to support solopreneurs in this exact season. One winner will receive a one-year 17hats membership (open to new and existing users), plus a 60-minute 1:1 session with me to help you figure out the best place to start.
Enter here.

✨ Because the messy middle shouldn’t be the thing that stops you from building your fairytale.

Author and entrepreneur Charity Alyse shares the heartwarming story behind Austen’s Shelf, her tiny bookshop on wheels — a Jane Austen–inspired mobile bookstore bringing literary magic to communities across New Jersey.

After a health scare reminded her that “someday” isn’t guaranteed, Charity decided to stop waiting and start building. Within weeks, she and her husband transformed a simple trailer into a charming, book-filled escape — complete with wallpaper, shelves, and the warmth of Jane Austen’s parlor.

In this episode, Charity shares ALL the details of learning how to run a bookstore — budgeting, inventory, and the steep logistics of transporting and setting up hundreds of books. She also shares the lessons she’s learned about knowing your audience, building community, and staying calm when everything goes sideways (including losing the keys to her bookshop on launch day).

Her story is a beautiful reminder that courage, curiosity, and persistence can turn even life’s scariest moments into something extraordinary — and that sometimes, the fairytale begins when you stop waiting for “someday.”

We don’t talk enough about the simple stuff in business — like saying thank you, acknowledging a message, or showing basic respect and professionalism. But today, I’m calling it out.

In this episode, I’m diving into why modern business etiquette still matters — and how it can actually become a quiet superpower in your brand. I’m sharing a few real-life moments that sparked this conversation (including my swim team group texts and a frustrating Instacart experience) and unpacking how small gestures build trust, credibility, and connection with clients.

And here's the good news: you don’t have to manually remember it all. You can (and should!) automate thoughtful touches with tools like 17hats so that simple courtesies don’t fall through the cracks when life or business gets busy.

✨ Topics covered:

  • The role of etiquette in the digital business world
  • Why the “little things” can make a big brand impact
  • How systems can support better follow-through and client experience
  • Personal stories that prove why this matters more than ever
  • A gentle reminder: none of us get it perfect — and that’s OK

Adulting can be hard. So when someone tells you to take a few minutes for yourself, your first reaction may be something like, “Who has time for that?!”

School psychologist, author and podcast host Jonna Watson is about to make the case that we can’t afford NOT to make time for some play.

As a working mom, Jonna realized she had become disconnected and felt depleted. So to celebrate her 40th birthday, she challenged herself (and friends) to spend just five minutes a day reconnecting with her inner child (think of any activity that you used to enjoy as a child but seldom do today because life is just too busy).

With this simple practice, Jonna discovered she was able to be fully present more often and make space to experience the joy and delight in life. AND this new habit also led her to start her own podcast, Five Minute Inner Child, publish two children’s books and start a local accountability group. Sounds like she found the secret formula for expanding time and energy - just by making time for play.
